Now in the Locked on Celtics podcast, we just saw the best game yet from Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum. Locked on Celtics pot, home of the winning hey there. Welcome back to the show. Caffeinated kick, no sugar. It's party time. Order now, five hour energy.com or on Amazon. Boston Celtics get the win over the Golden State Warriors. Or what's left of the Golden State warriors for now. Later on we'll get to Robert Parish who was on the show earlier this week. He was in the house at TD Garden. Welcome back Kristaps Porzingis. We'll talk about the Celtics defensive strategy, but let's just dive into this game. The big overarching story is the Celtics got the best game yet from the Jays. Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum. It started with Jason Tatum playing really, really well. Early on he scored the first thing five points. He just looked great. And then Jalen Brown took over from there. In the first quarter it was Tatum hit 3 of 5 from 3, scored 9 points but Brown had 19. So Brown did everything right in the first quarter. Actually did everything right in this game. I thought he's. He's been playing extraordinarily well lately. And after the game, he explained they were staying home on the shooters. They're paying the shooters a lot of respect. They didn't want the. The warriors, because they're so shorthanded, especially are playing the numbers game. The way they're going to win is limit you from three and bomb away from three for on their side and try to beat you with math. And so they stayed home on shooters and they just encouraged Jalen to just attack and take over. This is the second time the Celtic, the Warriors and Celtics has been some version of. All right, Jalen, what do you got for us? And the first time was we're going to let him shoot. That was what, last season? Two. Two seasons ago. One last season and then early last season. Right. And then this time it's just like we're just going to stay home on the shooters. And you do it. You do what you got to do. And he drops 19 in the first quarter. So the overall combined night from Jalen and Jason is 56 combined points. They had 16 combined rebounds, seven assists. They had three steals combined. So it was for Jalen and Jason, I mean, obviously limited sample, but the best, absolute best we've seen them play at the same time. And it's a little scary. It should be a little scary for the league, right? That this is happening already. This is already. We're talking about Jason Tatum and Jaylen brown combining for 56. That's not supposed to be happening yet. And I know I've been saying this already. Maybe for those of you who are with me every day Monday through Friday, you every dayers, you might be sick of me saying this, but maybe not because it's Jason Tatum and he's back and he. How is he back? How is he doing this? Jalen has been phenomenal. He's expanding his game. I like that he scored 32 in this game and had a well rounded game. Efficient 11 for 20 overall, 1 of 4 from 3, but 9 of 9 from the line. He got on the offensive boards and grabbed a couple of those. He just did some of everything. I like that after 19 points in the first quarter, he didn't force it. He didn't go and say, oh, maybe I'm on. I'm. I'm, you know, on my way to a 50 piece or a 60 piece and try to force something or 80. But he just played within himself, gave the game what it needed is something Joe Mazzulla loves to say nowadays and is. Is really just playing his best basketball right now. And Jason, obviously, he's playing his best basketball because he's only played, what's this, six games now? I've lost count. But he keeps looking better and better. I'm not supposed to be talking about these guys combining for 56 yet. That was, that was something that maybe, maybe it happened at the end of April, maybe, maybe it happened in the playoffs. Possibly. To be talking about it now this early in the process, I, I don't know if you're going to get sick of it. I'm not going to get sick of it by saying, I just continue to be just amazed at the progress. But to watch these two kind of work off of one another, to see the shot falling for Jay, for Jason Tatum, but also the defense, also the passing, the play, the ball movement, it was great to see early on. Part of the reason why Jalen got going was Jason was attacking and drawing two and drawing three and. And he got him a couple of open looks and that's just something. They're going to get each other going. That's not fair. That's not fair for the rest of the league to have. Okay, well, Jaylen now has Jason Tatum to get him going. What? And Jason is going to have. Jaylen. Has Jaylen to get him going. So this is something that I didn't think I'd see until, honestly, the beginning of next season. So was great to see that the, the Jays were able to play this well this soon. Tatum 7 of 15 shooting, 5 of 11 from 3, 5 of 6 from the free throw line. That free throw. The. The free throws are going to be the thing that tell us that he's truly back. If he starts taking 6, 7, 8, 9, then you're. You're looking at. Oh, okay. Tatum. Tatum is. Is. Is getting closer to Jason Tatum again. Because if he's drawing the contact getting and ones that. That's going to be the, The Jason Tatum that's. That's like, oh, oh, he's. That guy's back now, and I can't. That might happen on Friday night, might happen on Sunday for all I know. I wouldn't expect it. I wouldn't have normally expected it, but here we are. The Celtics put up 120 points and part of that is bench production. Peyton Pritchard, 19 points. Great to see him. Excuse me. I'm getting all choked up over Peyton Pritchard shot being back 8 of 16, 3 of 7 from 3. He went through some struggles recently and, and you start hearing people like, oh, Jason comes back and Peyton starts struggling and excuse me, that might be some somewhat the case, but the, even if it was because Jason came back, that was never anything to worry about. I never even brought it up as a real talking point because the, you had to give it time to work. Jason. Jason. Getting up to full speed certainly is a priority for the Celtics, and there may have to be a little bit of shifting from the normal game plan to. Let's just, let's just make sure that Tatum is getting up to speed here. Maybe it's play calls, maybe it's distribution of the minutes when he plays, when he sits, but I, I, I honestly, I think that that might be an antiquated notion at this point. There's going to be some of it here and there, but the, the acclimation period, re, acclimation period. The, re entry into the Celtics rotation, the, the growing pains have, I think, started to, you're starting to get past those. So Pritchard is back hitting his shots. The, the, the chemistry with the Mishkeda looks good. Tatum and Keda have figured out a little bit of a, a little bit of a flow, so that's good. Shout out to Keda, who was in foul trouble. This wasn't exactly his most dominant game or anything like that, but, you know, 8.7 rebounds, three offensive rebounds. He did get a steal. The, the chemistry between him and Tatum is a good kind of sign of progression between these guys, and it shows how quickly how smart these guys are because of how quickly they're able to get everything in place, everything together. But Pritchard finding his shot and getting back up to speed is great. He was a plus 25. He led the team plus 25. So inside, outside, everything, he had everything working in this game. Luca Garza was great. 6 of 10 overall, 1 of 2 from 3. Why does it feel like he hit more than one three pointer in this game? He was really good and it was great to hear him talk about the, the way everybody kind of rallied around him after the Vucovic trade and said, hey, stay ready. We're going to need you. You've been great for us. We're going to need you again. And that's just a testament of what this team really is. I'll probably talk about that more in future podcasts, but it's just a testament. Why are they so ahead of the curve? Why are they exceeding expectations? Why did Steve Kerr before the game say, I'm blown away by these Celtics. It's because of this locker room and how good they are and how, how they just trust each other and respect one another. And that's what fuels guys like Luca Garza, who is a self starter, a self motivator. But this is, it's been great for him. He's, he said it. It's been great for him to hear these guys, how they rallied around him. And Here he is, 15 points, seven rebounds, four offensive rebounds, a great night, three steals. Him poking the ball away from Draymond Green posting up. That's incredible to see. So great night for the Jays. The best night for the Jays. Great contributions off the bench. Baylor Shireman was good. Just overall good stuff. The defensive game plan was let Draymond shoot. Let's get into more of the individual stuff and the, the, the game plan. We'll do that when we come back. Today's show is brought to you by Wayfair. It's spring. Well, it's not officially. That's all because of you, the everydayer, the person with me every Monday through Friday, bonus podcast. Make sure you got to be subscribed because it's not just five podcasts a week. You could be getting 7, 9, 10, 11 depending on how the week goes. There's tons and tons of content, so make sure you're subscribed. Thank you for checking in with me. I'm John Carales, by the way, beat writer covering the Celtics for Sports Illustrated Celtics on si. Been a beat writer here, covering the team for about 20 years. Been doing this podcast for 10. So been doing this for a long time. Welcome aboard. If you're new. Welcome back. If you've been around other individual players here that I thought had nice production, I talk about Baylor. Baylor's been able to do a little bit of everything and he, you know, gets that 24 and a half minutes even though he scores three points. You know, the three pointer that he hit was big. It was. That was the one after a steal. It was a kind of a crazy play. And he finished, he finished that. The three. You get the thumbs up from Derrick White. I love that he went in there and dove for a loose ball even with that fractured thumb. He's in there. You can see him grabbing at it. But he was in there doing his thing. So. So that was good. Who else? Sam Houser was okay, nothing special. Derrick White. Oh, Derrick White. That's the other guy that I needed to talk about. Derek White coming off of, by the way, a nice little appearance on the Tonight Show. Jimmy Fallon. That was good to see. Nice to see D. White getting some love there. 11.6 assists, three steals and a block. So four stocks for him. So not a ton of shots, but didn't need them, obviously. They won by 21 and they put up 120 points. But giving the game what it needs. Joe Missoula™ Joe Missoula the The beginning of the fourth quarter, the steals were. The defense was really what kind of held off the Warriors. And yeah, it's a shame that the foul kind of negated the play because he had that great move, that spin and finish. But anyway, he was. He was really good. Fourth quarter, Derrick White just. Whatever happens in the first three quarters, Fourth quarter, Derrick White is just a beast. And you now have the luxury of, ah, 11 points from Derrick White. That's okay. That's, I think, the net effect of Jason and Jalen being so good now that Derek having. Okay, eight shots. All right, no problem. Eight shots is fine because somebody else is stepping up. Peyton, you got. You know, Luca, th. Those guys are. Are doing. You know, when they're doing that thing, then Derek could just be like, you know, I'm just gonna dish it out. You know, that. That's fine. Or I'm gonna play defense. I'm gonna start the offense and just kind of space and occupy a defender and. And if somebody wants to hug up on me, then by all means, you guys go ahead and drive. So, you know, a nice little game from Derrick White. Defensively, the Celtics, it seemed like they were just gonna let Draymond shoot as often as he wanted. And when Draymond is. Well, Kristaps took 13 shots, then Draymond took 12. Draymond is your second leading shot taker. It's not good. That's not his job. And he was three of seven from three, which is. Is good. But the. The misses, the allowance. The. Go ahead, good take. Take whatever shots you want. Draymond, go for it. That just throws the. The offense for the warriors off. And they. They were missing so many guys. Obviously, no Curry. No. Who else do they have? No Jimmy Butler, obviously. The other Curry. Both Curries are out. No Al Horford, no Moses Moody. So there weren't a lot of options for the Warriors. The last thing you want to do is have Draymond turn into an assist machine. He did have five, but you don't want to have a seven, eight, nine assist night for. For Draymond. Just you. You end up getting killed. It was already bad enough to hear all the gushing over Pat Spencer and those guys and, you know, some of. Some of the contributions they were getting. You don't want Draymond to turn into a facilitator and making everybody better and taking away the opportunity to. To pull away. The Celtics got up by 26, and then they fell behind. They. They gave up most of it or some. A lot of it. They got down to, I Think the game got down to eight or six at one point, but they were never really, really in any trouble. And I, I just feel like they didn't have to overextend themselves. It was interesting at the beginning of the game that they started Jason Tatum on Kristaps Porzingis. That's a, you know, a great, a great play, a great decision because it allowed Namish Kada to roam and, you know, Nemi got a couple of, well, one block off of that, but a couple of challenges of shots off of that. So I thought that was a good defensive strategy. Oh, going back to Jason Tatum, now that I mentioned kp, I thought the, the drive that he had on Porzingis, which was, I want to say in the third quarter, maybe they, you know, the, the drive, I think he started driving right, crossover finish on the left hand side and you know, he taps KP on the butt and he goes out back to the bench and gives it like a whoo. You know what I mean? Like that kind of. I can't believe I just pulled that move off that. That's a great sign that that might have been the best move of the night just because it was Tatum and he got by kpop. Think about it. Jason has now driven past Wembanyama and past Christophs Porzingis. He's taking the tallest dudes in the league off the dribble and finishing. So that was, that was a great play. So good, good defensive strategy. Very, you know, very few options for the warriors. And Joe just kind of said we're not going to let those few options go too crazy on us. So they, they just did a good job defensively here. Let's talk about kp. Let's talk about Robert Parish because it's interesting, an interesting night with Robert Parrish in the house. We'll talk about that when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by zocdoc. Kristaps Porzingis was back. They did a nice video tribute. He said he wasn't gonna cry. He didn't cry, but you could tell he was feeling good, he was feeling happy. He's an emotional guy. Maybe he was fighting back the tears. It was good. You can even see Draymond Green looking at the video and like nodding, like pursing his lips going, okay, yeah, that was good. That was good. Nice video for him. Nice tribute for kp. He was only here for a couple of seasons, but it was in a very impactful couple of seasons and Celtics got what they needed. And he said before the game, you know, it's been a tough year. But he says he's healthy now. So whatever it was, I don't know. Steve Kerr said it wasn't whatever they said it was. And who knows? It's so mysterious. But whatever it was, it's gone now. Apparently KP feels fine. He's back, he's playing. He said he's, he's kind of like a renewed love for the game, which is great. That's what you, you need. And so it was good to see him out there for a while. It looked like, oh no, he might actually be having a revenge game here. But it was just a nice, it was nice to see him back. That moment with Tatum, him, KP with Baylor, Shireman kind of like squeezing his arm to be like, oh, you put some muscle on here. That was a nice, fun moment for him. And yeah, it was just good to see him back. It was also good to see Robert Parish in the house. Obviously, if you missed the Robert Parish interview, I got him on Sunday. So we talked to him on Sunday. It was a great conversation about his book, the Chief, a lot of non basketball talk because he's, he's. The whole point of the book is letting you in on the person that Robert Parrish is. But he was there. He talked to the media before the game. He was at the game, big standing ovation. He soaked it up. Really nice to see. He got to talk to Jason to. Yeah, Jason Tatum Jalen Brown said he didn't talk to him. I think Robert Parish might stick around this week. He's got. He's got book signings all week long. So there's one Thursday, I think Thursday one is in Nashua and the Friday one is in Wellesley. So Google that if you want to meet the chief and you're in Nashua and you're in Wellesley, you have an opportunity to do that. And I think he's going to be at the game this weekend, so Jalen's going to have a chance to meet him. Jason was touched. These are guys that could be back at some point. Although Jalen, Jalen was funny because after the game he said, you know, he was asked about being in Robert Parish's position. Robert Parish is 70. I think he's 71 now. So Jalen very clearly is not thinking that far along. He turns 30 before next season, so he's not really thinking about 40 plus years away. But side note, I can just speak as a person who's lived more than 40, more than 50 years. It goes by fast, Jalen. It goes by really fast, faster than you want it to. But the funniest thing is he said, you know, I want to say you never know what's going to happen, but I want to say that once I'm gone, you'll never see me again. And. Which is an interesting. He's such an interesting dude that, you know, the you'll never see me again bit. And, you know, Gary Washburn asked him, like, is it going to be. So it's. You think it's going to be fade to black after you retire? And he's like, yeah, you never know. But that's. Yeah, he just wants to disappear and never be back and never be back around Boston and all that. He just wants to go and. And it makes perfect sense for. For Jaylen, that's kind of seems like the type of person that he is. He's going to experience the world. He's going to be thankful for his time in Boston and he's gonna. He'll probably come back and visit the neighborhood unexpectedly from time to time, but I don't think he's going to be coming back to the arena. Then again, I say that now he's gonna. They're gonna retire his number. So he'll be back to retire his number. Like, that's definitely happening. Jaylen Brown's like, no one else is wearing the number seven, right? That Jason Tatum. No one else is wearing zero. So those that they're gonna have to be back for those moments, I think, Right. Jalen's gonna have to come back for that. But I don't know if he's gonna want to come back. He's gonna miss it, right? We all miss it. Everybody. Everybody who's played basketball misses it. You want to go back and soak up the love. You want to remember what it's like. You can't tell me that Jalen's just going to be, you know, off around the world and just. Okay, that there's never going to be another crowd of 19, 20,000 people standing up and cheering for you. You think you're just going to be okay with that? I don't know, man. That's. That's a. That's a hell of a drug, man. The adulation of a crowd. That's. You can say it now because you're in it. And I feel like I'm talking directly to Jalen, but not that he listens to this at all, but you can say it now because it's a grind, and you're going through everything and ups and downs of everything. But you retire in your 30s, you're 50, you're 60. You come around, you're going to be like, no, man, I. I miss. I miss the crowd. I miss the love. And you'll find a reason. You'll find a reason to come back. They'll find a way. There's always going to be some honoring of the championship team. So, you know, in 2034, 2044, they're going to. They're going to want to honor these teams. I don't think Jaylen's just gonna, you know, dip and be like, nah, you guys celebrate without me. Come on. You're gonna celebrate with your teammates. You just soak up the love every once in a while. He'll be back. I don't know. He may not be back, but it's good to see chief, and it's good that, you know, these guys do appreciate the legend, you know, and seeing these legends come back and, you know, appreciating what the guys did before them because they set the tone. You don't get paid what you get paid. If it wasn't for these guys, people like Robert Parish, so psyched. Psyched for everybody. All right, that's the podcast that'll do it. I'll be back tomorrow.
