John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal breaks down the Boston Celtics' impressive preseason victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. The green and white delivered on promises of faster play and aggressive defense, averaging 106 possessions per 48 minutes. Jaylen Brown's 21-point first-half explosion and Derrick White's double-double set the tone, while newcomers Luka Garza, Hugo Gonzalez, and Josh Minott made their mark. However, defensive rebounding remains a concern. Can the Celtics maintain this high-octane style when the games count? Tune in for expert analysis on how Joe Mazzulla's new system could reshape the Celtics' aspirations.

Share your thoughts with me about this win. About anything. Celtics. I'm John Corralis, beat writer for Boston Sports Journal. I've been doing a version of the shop for about 20 years. I've written a couple books about the team, so I think I got my finger on the pulse and today we're talking about the Boston Celtics beating the Memphis Grizzlies by a score. Who cares about the Scores, right. They, they won by, they're up by like 30 at one point. They ended up winning by 17, 18 points. But it's a preseason. We don't care about the, the final score necessarily. We care about how they, how they delivered on certain promises. Later on we'll talk about the rebounding. There was a little bit of a downside, a couple of things that I didn't like. The rebounding, the defensive rebounding specifically. We'll talk about that later on. We'll get into some of the individual performances. Obviously, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, but Josh Minor, Luca Garza and Ugo Gonzalez, people I think will be reacting to Ugo more than anything today. So, but let's just start with the, the basics here. They delivered on a promise. I think they came out with a desire to play fast. They came out playing aggressive and I think they, you know, it's the first preseason game, I'm not going to make too much of it. But they promise to play faster, they promise to play more aggressive and they did that. That's good, right? Their pace was at 106, 106 possessions per 48 minutes. So 106 possessions, that's about eight more than they had per game last year. They had 17 fast break points. They were, that would have been good for seventh in the league last year if they averaged that. But they averaged 12 last year. So five more fast break points they went. That would been. They were second to last last year. They had 13 steals. They averaged less than eight last year. So the aggressive defense, the up tempo, getting the ball out of the net on makes, getting the ball up the floor on misses, turnovers, whatever, that's, that's what they said they do. And they did it. So they did it with I think better timing than I was expected. They did it with a, a little bit more fluidity than I was expecting. But it was, it was, it was nice to see. Now mind you, it came against the Memphis Grizzlies who were missing John morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. Kentavious Colwell Pope, Brandon Clark, Zach Edie, Ty Jerome, Jock landale, Scotty Pippen Jr. So basically all the good Grizzlies, no disrespect to the guys who played, but all the best Grizzlies sat for the most part. So I'm not going to make too big of a thing of like, oh, wow, they came out and they ran and they put up a, you know, they got up by 30 or whatever and you know, I'm not going to make that big of a deal of that. But I do think that when you promise to play fast, you come out and you set a pace and a good tempo and, and you played the way you wanted to play. You got out in transition when you had those opportunities, you played the defense that you were looking to play. Guys were a little bit more aggressive going for those steals. You, you saw that a little bit more. When was it Peyton Pritchard talked about? The Celtics played a safe defense last year. They weren't playing the same kind of defense in this one. They were playing a little bit more aggressively and it paid off. They paid off in those 13 steals. So when the, when the team says we want to do something and they come out and they do it regardless against what the competition is, great, then that's how you're supposed. That's how it's supposed to go. Now, I was wondering if Jaylen Brown, Derrick White would, would they. Would they kind of like run through the offense? Would they go through progressions? Or would they just say, hey, look, we're going to run our offense and whatever the shots get, whatever shots we get are the shots we get. And it was the latter. Jalen wasn't giving up shots for the sake of, hey, let's run this offense to the other side. And, and I don't know what. What the Celtics intended to do in that regard. They didn't have. They also didn't have everybody. They decided not to play Pritchard or Anthony Simons or Namishkada. So we didn't get the full complement of Celtics. So we didn't get to see what Anthony Simons was going to be defensively. That's something we're going to have to see. Against Toronto. We didn't get to see pick setting up tempo. Namishkeda. It was a weird starting lineup, which Joe said, do not read into this. So, okay, we're not going to read into Jalen Brown, Derrick White, Sam Houser, Chris Boucher and Xavier Tillman, but that was the starting lineup. And, and I'm not reading into it because I think Tillman got like the fewest minutes of, of all of the starters. Well, no, actually, no. He had 23 minutes so that he played. He. He got more minutes in the second half, but he, he sat out a big chunk of, of the first half. And that's, that's. I think that's what I was thinking because the Celtics relied a little bit more on Luca Garza to be their, their pick setting, kind of rolling big and I'll get to Luca Garza in the second segment in just a minute here, but not going to read anything into this starting lineup because this won't be the starting lineup. They. They have their plan. They. They're making their decisions based on, you know, guys who practice and they had shoot around and guys went through workouts pre. Pregame. So it's not about necessarily getting the starting lineup out there all the time. They're running plenty in practice and all of that. They wanted to do this and, and whatever. So the. I'm not making too much of the starting lineup. Sam Houser, I thought did. Did fine. He hit one corner, three pointer, right corner, three pointer, fading away like into the corner. I have to express how hard a shot that is to. And scowl. Mentioned it on the broadcast to catch it fading to your right, turning that one, two step. You. It's. It's kind of almost like the basketball version, to a much lesser degree of that Drake may throw against the Bills where he's running off to his right. And you got to get that thing. You just got to take enough off of it. You got to throw it. You gotta. You gotta throw it to the left, knowing that your body's natural momentum is going to take that ball to the right anyway. So you're. You're doing physics. You're doing physics in midair. Your body's doing physics calculations. Like, I'm going this way. I need to overcompensate this way. Anyway, that. That shot in the corner was just. It was spectacular. And if, If Sam Houser's hitting those kinds of shots, okay, then that's gonna be a different Sam Houser. But overall, I'm just. When I say impressed with this team, I'm not, like, overreacting. I'm doing, as I described it on Boston Sports Journal, that little frowny face kind of nod like, okay, okay, all right, I got you. Nice. Nice. All right. Impressive. Let's. Let's see what you got. I'm not like, hand on my head going, oh, my God, look at what they just did. It's just like, all right, I gotcha. So nice to see them deliver on what they promised. Now, individual guys, the obvious, Jaylen Brown, Derek White, we'll talk about their. Their games. They look great, but I'm more interested in the Luca Garza, Josh Minot, Hugo Gonzalez and those guys. And I'll talk about them when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by Quo. Thank you for making Lockdown Celtics your first listen every day. Go check out Lockdown NBA and Lockdown NBA Game night. They've got all the games covered in the league. All this pre preseason action including the Celtics games. If you want a little outsider take on the Celtics game that you can take a listen over there, you'll get a little bit from the grizzly side as well. So go check it out. Lockdown NBA game night seven days a week and Lockdown NBA the afternoon show is five days a week. Let's get back to the individual performances and look, I think the I can generally say that everybody who played minus, I think the last few minutes of the game, but I think basically everybody who played the majority of this game did something positive. So let's just start with the big names. Jalen Brown, Derek white. Jalen had 21 points at halftime, 6 of 13 shooting, 3 of 6 from three. The most impressive thing from Jalen for me was the eight free throws that he took. Six of eight from the line. That's if he's getting to the line eight times or more per game, that, that's going to be a big season for Jalen Brown. He's definitely gonna have a big year if he can get to the line consistently. The aggressiveness is part of it. You can see him when he was pushing the ball, when he was pushing the tempo, pushing the pace, it does force the defense to make decisions. And he got fouled. He had that one play where I forget who it was that grabbed him, but he came back and just two hand shove and it was a double double Tech. First of all, I'm sure Joe Missoula loved the fire and, and the comeback there, but that was, that was a foul as well. That was, Jalen got fouled on that play. The guy was hand hanging on to Jalen's hand the whole way. That's something that like I'm sure the refs in transition, this is going to be the tough part. Side note for the Celtics, plays like that are going to be tough to officiate because it's going to be tough for that, that back official to get back in into position on the baseline to see that grabbing. And I think if you're a defender, it's pretty smart to kind of, if you see there's no ref on the baseline, then yeah, I'm going to grab, I'm going to hold you back. I'm going to try to do something that, you know, surreptitiously hinders your, your progress there. And Jalen, I'm fine with the reaction, but also understand that when you're pushing the pace the way you want to this year and you get those steals, you get those kick aheads and you, you, you need to be aware, you really do need to be aware of where the refs are and the, the play from a certain angle looks like an offensive foul and the player kind of like throws himself back and it looks like an offensive foul. And now I'm sure the league's officials are going to get together and review and be like, did you see that call and all that stuff? Now I, I, I did learn over the summer that those reviews happen and if, if refs consistently are missing calls like that, they do get kind of like demoted. There's, there's the crew chief, there's the referee and there's an umpire. And you have fewer and fewer responsibilities. If you get dropped down to umpire, you're like on your way out. And so just side note there, be aware Jalen Brown, because that type of play, I can even say that's a smart defensive play guy. I don't see a ref. It's like wrestling. I don't see a ref. I'm gonna pull the, the brass knucks out of my, my hands and out of my tights and knock you out and take the title. That's so be aware. Just be aware. But other than that play, Jalen, I said Jalen. Jalen was great. Jalen was in mid season form. Dark White was in mid season form. Jalen did everything mid range, getting to the rim, three point shooting, three levels is just. And again, the Grizzlies were missing so many guys that it was basically Jalen against the G league team. And if Jalen isn't dropping 21 points at halftime on essentially a G league team, then it's a problem. So Jalen did exactly what he was supposed to do. Derek did exactly what he was supposed to do. He had a double double, 16 points, 10 assists, a steal, a couple of blocks for Derek white. Celtics blocked 10 shots in this game. They had 13 steals in this game. Defensively, really good. So a combined 37 points from Derek and Jaylen. That awesome for them. Hower had nine, Chris Buet had 11. Boucher, nice, a nice game. Did not shoot well. One of six from three did get to the line. Four or five from. From the line. Good energy, some nice plays from Boucher. Interesting, you know, kind of start for him. But. So that's the starting lineup. I think most people are going to come away from this game. Their biggest takeaways are going to be Ugo Gonzalez, Josh Minot, Luca Garza. I think those are the three guys that we're looking at, the guys who, the new guys who can maybe contribute beyond this year. Let's start with Luca Garza who Scowl was just gushing about the screen setting and he, he was setting some really good screens. The timing was good. The you know when to get there, when to get out. All the stuff Scal was talking about is, is really good stuff and it's part of what I was asking Jalen about when I talked about the timing when I did that whole first segment about timing a couple days ago. That's, that's part of it. This, this is why it was impressive to me. Luca was there when he needed to be. Screens re. Screens, you know, go from, you know, just setting a screen on a pick and roll to setting a pin down to say just a different screens, a different amount of screens in each possession. That type of stuff was really good. And it wasn't just people were expecting picking pops. He didn't do that. He didn't take a single three pointer. He, he rolled to the basket, he got fouled. He was 6 of 9 from the free throw line. A 10, 10 point, 10 rebound double double. He had four offensive rebounds. He just did a lot of that dirty work. It's exactly, exactly the type of game that they need from him. And you can mix in the occasional three point shot. He's a capable three point shooter. So mixing that in is, is going to happen at some point. But he didn't force it. He just making the right reads and getting down, you know, getting downhill and scoring, getting fouled, putting pressure on the defense. That's all great stuff. So really good game from Garza, surprisingly. So Minot. I'm, I'm glad that I wrote about Minot already because everybody's gonna be writing about Minot in the next day or so. He was, you know, he did not shoot well. The three point shot did not look good for Josh, but everything else looked great. Seven, seven rebounds, three assists. He had three steals. Is that right? Yeah, three steals and a block. So he's known as like this stocks. God. And he had four, three steals and a block. So four stocks for Minot. And I'm going to see what the final deflections number was, but had to be five, six, seven deflections for him. He was getting in there being disruptive. The offensive rebounds he had that big put back. The one of the three assists was to Xavier Tillman on an alley. Oop. What, As I joked on Twitter, did not have that on my bingo card. But it was a great play. Just he. If you watch that play again, you can see him trying to sell that he was going to go take that ball in and get the defender to just commit just enough. And in that situation, all you need is the defender to just turn just to get his center of gravity or his balance just a little bit off. And that you can't just. Unless you're Giannis and tendon, you can't do that and then turn and block that alley. Like nobody's getting that except for like Giannis and you know, maybe Rudy Gobert. Like that's it. So good job by Minot to sell and to get that lob up perfect and then Tillman to go up and get it. That was incredible. So great, great work all around there. The, the big story I think would be, the other big story would be Ugo Gonzalez. We'll talk about Ugo when we get back because he had a lot of, a lot of energy. And then we'll get into some of the rebounding stuff, which was a problem. That's all coming up next. Today's show is brought to you by Prize Picks. If you found this one, you can find Locked on fantasy. Hugo Gonzalez was, I mean, really good. There's no. I can't. I don't want to undersell, oversell. He was really good. He was really good and. Well, he was really good against, again, G League. It. It looked a little summer leagueish, but I think the. I'm, obviously, I'm trying not to. I'm not. I'm trying not to go too crazy here with Gonzalez because one game against half the Grizzlies, it's. It's not. I don't want to go too crazy, but he looks good. He. There are some guys, you can just see it in the way they move. You can see it in the decisions they make. You can see it in their instincts. I think Gonzalez is a hit. I think he's a hit. You see it, you know, in summer league. You saw it in this game. Again, I'm not trying to oversell it. I still don't know what kind of role he's going to have on this team this year. If he's going to have a role on this team this year. He's 19 years old. We have to remember he's 19 years old. There is a little bit of a. A culture shock by. You grew up in Spain, now he's here. His family will come over, but it's a bit of a culture shock. There is a language barrier. He is. He did say that there's a little bit of a language barrier. It's not that he's not getting it, it's just that. Just a little bit slower. There were some plays and Scowl Highlighted is a great example of you can't bury your shoulder into the chest of somebody in the NBA and get away with it like you can in some of these overseas leagues. So he's going to learn. He's going to adjust. But I, I like the way he moves. I like the way he reads. I like the way he reacts. I love his competitiveness. There's just a lot to really latch onto with him. So when I say I don't know what kind of role he's going to have this year, it's simply that I am. I do not want to rush him along. There's no need to rush him along. I want him to get the right amount of playing Time. Now, what I've been saying is get him a bunch of playing time in the G League. Bring them up. Let's see how he applies it. Then go back to the G League and apply some of those lessons and really let him play. Because I want to see him play 38 to 40 minutes. I want to see him get those minutes, and he's not going to get all of those minutes on the NBA level. So it's a balance. Now, maybe that changes. Maybe he does get minutes. Maybe it is better for him. That is something that I can't determine. I know what I would like to see personally, just based on the things that I know, but I don't know everything that's happening because we. A lot of that stuff is hidden from us. So I. I want. I just want to see him develop at the right pace. If that means nothing but G League this year, fine. If that means nothing but NBA minutes this year, fine. He's going to be good. He is going to be good. He had what, three blocks in this game? Where is it? Three. Three block shots. A steal. He had that huge dunk off, that one steal. That was incredible. They talked about his hands being the size of Taco Falls hands. I did not notice that in him, but. Oh, my God, if that's true, that's incredible. But, yeah, there's. There's very good reason to be excited about Hugo Gonzalez. I. I'm very willing to declare him a hit already just because I think. I think he's going to develop into a really good player now. What does that mean? Does that mean he's going to be an All Star? Does that mean he's going to be a good role player? I don't know what the ceiling is. I'm not going to put a ceiling on him. I. I think he's going to be. I think he's gonna be good. I think he's gonna be a really good player. What else was there? I talked about Minot, Jordan, Walsh. I really was hoping to see more from him, but he left with the left. Left adductor tightness, growing tightness. So we'll see if he's going to the Toronto Raptors, but it looked like he was. He was starting to show a couple things. He. He had. You know, we had that one. We had that one dunk on a cut. So. But he. He was showing some things. He had a few rebounds and then he only played seven, eight minutes. So that was. That was about it. So incomplete for him. Baylor Scheimen hit a few Shots early, but then finished 3 of 13. So he needs to be a little bit again, needs to be more consistent. Shout out, by the way, to Jason Tatum. Jason Tatum was there, traveling for a preseason game. Again, I don't want to overreact, but that's good leadership. That's just good leadership. You know, he doesn't have to be there. No one on the team would have questioned him staying home for preseason games, but he's traveling with the team, so good for him. All right, let's finish this up. I saved. I saved the worst for last, but I'm gonna. I'm gonna mix in some good stuff. The. The defensive rebounding was a problem. They. Their defensive rebounding position percentage was 66.1, so they got 66.1 of the available defensive rebounds that would have been dead last in the NBA by a full percentage point. Plus. That is not good. It's especially not good because they were playing half the Grizzlies. They didn't even have, like, all the biggest Grizzlies out there. Now, would Keda solve some of that? Maybe. Would Simons solve any of that? No, not really. Maybe a couple. Pritchard, maybe. But, like, you know, swooping in for a couple. The defensive rebounding has to be better. Has to be better. In fact, it was so bad in one possession that Joe called a timeout. It was the one thing that pissed them off more than anything. Now after the game, he was like, no, we gotta, you know, kill this narrative, because defensive rebound rebounding is always important. So we got to kill this narrative, which is him trying to deflect and be like, look, we're, you know, look at all this other stuff. Look at how good Josh was. Look how good Ugo was. The defensive round rebounding, yes, it is always important. It always is an issue. You have to be a good rebounding team all the time. So there's nothing special about this year having, you know, the importance. But what Joe is willfully ignoring, maybe he's being a little obtuse about it, but you don't have the rebounders this year, so you have to gang rebound. You have to have more rebounding. Like, Jalen had one defensive rebound. Now Jalen needs to rebound. So as. As good as he. As good as everything was, like, Jalen needs to get in there. Sam Houser played 18 minutes, had one defensive rebound. What we need to see is, like, whoever the bigs are. So it was Tillman and Boucher, and then it was Garza. Those aren't going to be the Only the only rebounders. Yeah. Garza had six defensive rebounds, 10 rebounds overall. Tillman had three, Boucher had three. But those guys are going to have to box out and you're going to need Jalen and Sam and Derek. Now Derek had three, so that's good. Jalen needs to get three or four a game. Sam needs to get, you know, two, three, four a game. Just the wings have to get in there and rebound. That's just how it's going to have to go because the bigs aren't going to be able to do it themselves. You need to defensive rebound. Now. The offensive rebounding was good, so let's end on that note. The offensive rebounding was really Good. They had 17 offensive rebounds. So for even. And this is a product of them playing a decimated bad Grizzlies team, if they were playing the Cavs, let's say this score would have been reversed at halftime. There's no doubt in my mind. So as impressive as everything was and it's great to see and everybody's riding high, the defensive rebounding was so bad that a big team, a good team like Cleveland would have. They would have gotten crushed. The, the. They. There's no way the Celtics would have won the second chance points battle, which they did 22 to 19, or the offensive rebounding battle, 17 to 13. It's great that they went in there and got 17 and you got guys like might not keeping possessions alive and lots of guys getting in there, tipping, tipping the ball, grabbing the rebound, tipping it out, getting extra possessions. That was all great. Offensive rebounding is a big focus for these guys. So seeing them do that was really good. But it's got to translate on the defensive end. You got to get in there and because that pace of 106 could have been 110, could have been, you know, better. They could have gotten more shots up. And that's. You're going to need that against the better teams. So something to work on. But overall, happy with this. Happy with how it went. Happy with how it looked. Some people might say, oh, look, they're still firing a lot of threes, 53 three pointers and they only hit 15 of them. All right, that be fair. A lot of that second half was, you know, like, you had like, Josh Minot was 0 for 5. He's not. He's not going to get out there and shoot that many in a regular season game. You had Baylor taking nine. He was firing. That's, you know. But more than anything, I wasn't concerned about any of the three pointers that they took, especially in the first half, like when, when the regular Celtics were playing. I, I thought the, the pace and the shot selection and all that stuff was perfect. So I, I couldn't argue with any of the shots. So don't get too caught up with that 53 final number in a preseason game. I thought the shot selection was good. Some, some nights you're gonna, they are going to shoot plenty of three pointers because they are still the Celtics and, and they do emphasize those, but there are going to be some nights where they don't take as many and it's not going to be the same type of play style. So I thought the shot selection was good. So overall, nice, nice first preseason game. Next podcast is tomorrow. I'll bring Tom back on. We'll both re watch the game. We'll go look at some other things. We'll drill down a little deeper, we'll get some deeper analysis. We'll look ahead to that Friday game. I will do a podcast for you. Host: John Karalis, Locked On Podcast Network
Date: October 9, 2025
This episode dives into the Boston Celtics’ dominant preseason opener against a depleted Memphis Grizzlies team. Host John Karalis analyzes how the Celtics delivered on promises of faster pace and aggressive defense, breaks down stand-out performances by Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, camp hopefuls (Luka Garza, Josh Minott, Hugo Gonzalez), and evaluates team weaknesses—especially on the defensive glass. While Karalis remains cautious not to overreact given the opponent, he highlights positive takeaways and key concerns heading into the season.
