Now on the Locked On Celtics podcast, Derrick White steps up in the fourth. Luca Garza chomps glass and the Celtics survive in Memphis. Locked on Celtics pot. Home of the winners, baby. Hey there. I'm John Corrales. Today's show is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, use the code locked on for 20 off your first purchase of tickets. Celtics win. I was going to say they lose, but they win. 117, 112. It looked like they were going to lose until the fourth quarter. Jason Tatum struggled, and be honest with you, it's actually not the worst thing in the world that he struggled. Kind of happy to see that he's human. We'll get into that later. We'll get into Jalen Brown later. We'll get into Luca Garza and Derek White and everybody else. But I just want to start at the top here where it's it was a tougher game than we expected. The the Grizzlies were they weren't going Away. They. They struggled to hit shots, but they were forcing the Celtics into some turnovers or the Celtics were committing some uncharacteristic turnovers. They were missing shots.

The Grizzlies got out and they ran and they. They put up some points. And Jalen said it after the game, we're unfamiliar with these guys. And I think two things happen when you're playing a team like that with the Grizzlies that you're unfamiliar with them. Number one, you. You just. The scouting report, you can't. It's hard to just memorize the entire scouting report and all these new guys and have it just click like it's second nature. When you're playing, I don't know, the Knicks, you just know what guys, what their tendencies are. These guys, okay, so it takes a little while, and when it takes a little while to kind of, oh, right, that this guy likes to go this way. Oh, right, this guy likes to do this, they start to get hot. And the other part of playing guys that you're not really familiar with is you underestimate them. It's like, I don't really know you, so I must be better than you. And you get those two factors going in. And I think the Celtics had a tougher time than they expected. So, you know, it's. It's fine. The Grizzlies, it's the Doc Rivers quote. We pay them all and they make money. These guys make money to play basketball in the NBA. And every NBA player, if given the opportunity, has the potential to kind of do this. Just look at the Celtics. Look at who these guys are getting contributions from. You know, you have Garza. You know, I'm gonna talk to Garza about Garza in a minute. He's on a minimum, and he was a castle off in Minnesota, and he gets the opportunity in Boston. Look at him thriving. So, yeah, Tyus Jones got the opportunity and hit some wild, crazy. I'm sorry, Ty Jerome, I keep saying Tyus Jones. Ty Jerome hit incredible shots down the stretch. You got different. You know, Tyler Burton had moments in this game for the Grizzlies. You. You just. You had different guys giving you different contributions throughout. Burton had 23, but they had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 guys in double figures. That's. That's just an incredible performance overall from a team that you. If you're not well versed in the NBA, you're going to look at this and be like, who? And he did what? Who's this guy? And Jalen kind of had that reaction himself. So credit to the Grizzlies. Celtics kind of, you know, were not themselves. They were definitely not themselves. It was sloppy. It was a grind. And so it took the fourth quarter where Derrick White took over and scored 11 points. Now he scored 14 points overall. He said in his walk off interview, this was the. Yeah, I played. I played the three first three quarters like the worst I could possibly play. So I needed to do something. And that was one of the turning points of the game, right? They call a timeout. The. The Grizzlies go up seven. They get, you know, turnover. They get. They. They pile up. What's a five or seven, zero run or some. A seven, zero run, I believe. And Joe Missoula calls a timeout. You have Jalen and Jason sitting on the bench. Jalen's been having a great game. And you come out of the timeout, and Joe goes with neither of them, and he's just rolling with these guys. And Joe said after the games, like, I just wanted to give the game a different look. I want to. I wanted to give the game a different feel at that point. And every, you know, it worked out. I liked it. Everybody seemed to like that because it worked, right? It's a classic. It worked. So it's a genius move. If it didn't work, we'd be sitting there. I'd literally be sitting here right now saying, you should have brought Jalen in. That was an opportunity. You call a timeout, you bring Jaylen Brown in, and you try to win the game. So. But he did it, and it worked. And so Derek White gets the opportunity to go off for seven straight shots, but not only did he score seven. Make seven straight. Score seven straight points and make. It was a. It was a two, a three, and a two. He assisted on the other three baskets. Luca Garza, all of them. So in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, Derrick White scored or assisted on all of them. So it. It's, you know, that's what you expect from Derrick white. He's a fourth quarter performer. He's a high fourth quarter performer. And his overall numbers, 14 points, five rebounds, three assists. He had two steals. He had a block. He had another block that was, you know, erased by a foul. But that was going to be a great defensive play. I think somebody else filed. I forget who it was, but he was in there making other. You know, he makes the defensive place. That's what Derrick White does. But D. White steps up in the fourth quarter with 11 points. Luca Garza steps up in the fourth quarter with 11 points, he had five offensive rebounds. Five of his seven rebounds were offensive rebounds. The Celtics had 18 offensive rebounds overall. Let's get into that when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app and you can get yourself into an NBA arena. It's fun to be in an NBA arena watching these games. The crowd, the energy, it's, it's just you want to be part of that. Getting the tickets is not so easy, but Game Time gives you the advantage. I've used Game time plenty and it works very, very well because number one, the price you see is the price you pay. You don't see a ticket for 75 bucks and then check out and pay 110, you pay 75 bucks. So that all in pricing is right there up front. You get a view from your seat. I've been to a few different arenas for a few different sports and not sure what that section number means on the ticket, but I get the view from my seat and I say oh, I like that, I don't like that. And I can get my, my choice there. And if I like the view from a section, I pick a zone deal and Game Time picks the seats. And in that particular section, you save a little bit of money too. I'm a beat writer for Sports illustrated Celtics on SI. I've been covering the Celtics for 20 years and doing this podcast for 10. Really do appreciate you all being an everydayer and being with me on the number one sports podcast network on the planet. So the number one Celtics podcast, by the way too. Just. Just saying. Just saying. The offensive rebounding kept the Celtics alive in this game. The the their second chance points, it was 28 to 13. The 18 offensive rebounds was just about almost 40%. It's like 37% of their misses that they rebounded. That's a ridiculous number. It's. It's a ridiculous number. In fact, I'm going to quickly because I don't have, I didn't have it in front of me. But I'll tell you what the teams are. The leader in the NBA offensive rebounding percentage is the Houston Rockets at 39.2. So the Celtics, and we've seen what the Rockets can do. And this was, you know, with Stephen Adams, who was gone now. But the Detroit Pistons, we've seen how good they are. They're at 35.6% offensive rebounding percentage. That's. You think about how great those teams are. And the Celtics were up in that stratosphere. They're normally about 34%. They're fifth in the league doing it. So going up against the worst defensive rebounding team in the Memphis Grizzlies. Yeah, it stands to reason that you'd be up around 40%. So incredible offensive rebounding, like I said, 28 to 13. So you're in a game you won by five. You're plus 15 in second chances. That makes up for the nine point differential in three point shooting. Although the Celtics did go plus 12 in free throws. So free throws, offensive rebounding were the big deal for the Celtics. Garza was just a monster on the offensive boards. He. It's amazing that he's just so ready and we've talked about this. The, the way the guys treated him after the Nikola Vuchovic trade was incredible because they know we're gonna need you. You're gonna. You're gonna help us. And here he is now again. We couldn't have predicted the. The injury, which, by the way, side note, they talked. Abby Chin talked to Vuch, and they're two. He's two weeks in. They're going to get X rays in a third week at. So one more week before the X rays and then we'll see. But Ed Malloy went over to him. You could see it on the broadcast. Emily went over to him, and they just kind of had an interaction. And he looks down at his finger and he's like, yeah. And you could see I'm pretty good at reading lips. I'm almost positive he said two more weeks. So it's probably going to be two more weeks before he gets back. So they're going to need Luca Garza. But it wasn't just the offensive rebounding. It was. Garza was 9 of 12. He had good cuts. He just was around the rim. He's in the right place. He just finds himself in the right place at the right time. That one play where Derrick White just was hounded and he. He found his way around the defender. Pivot, pivot, pivot. And he throws this kind of crazy pass, trying to lead Garza because it was kind of like the only place he could throw the pass without it being tipped. Garza goes and reaches it and throws. It's kind of like behind his head. Lefty hook shot, just spins it off the backboard. That was such an incredible play. The pass was incredible. The finish was underrated that they made. They didn't make a big enough deal about the finish on the broadcast. That was an incredible play, Garza. Just for a guy. Someone. Someone tweeted this at me or sent me a message on. On Blue Sky. It was like, for a guy who doesn't play above the rim, he finishes really well around the basket. It's really incredible. So a phenomenal game from Garza. A phenomenal fourth quarter from Derrick White, who steps up and. And closes the deal. Now, Jalen Brown was good throughout this game. I get to him and some of the other. Well, actually, let's do some of these because Namishkada. I want to get to the Mishkada first before I get to Jalen Brown. Keda had this weird game where it's 12 points, 11 rebounds. He had four offensive rebounds. He had moments. He had that one pass underneath where he just kind of looped a. A Laser like a frozen rope. Over to Jalen in the, in the right corner for a three pointer. That was, that was an incredible pass. Kata was, was good in spots but didn't play the fourth quarter. I think that might have just been Joe saying Garza, Garza's got it going. I'm just gonna keep going with him and, and that's, that's going to be how this has to go now. You can, you can substitute V for Garza. At some point when the players come around and say hey, when Keda, when it's not working for Keda, you got to go with Vuch and more Vuch but you also have to be willing to go to Garza. And I think since the trade, I think there was that one game in Denver where the Celtics were cold and Garza comes, could have come in and helped. I think Joe understands now that you got to be willing to go to Garza. You got to be willing to go away from Keda. Sometimes Kate is going to come in and like they'll flip at some point Cato will have a 22 point game and he again 12 points, 11 rebounds, 4 offensive rebounds, 4 of 4 from the line. He's corrected a lot of the free throw issues but you know you can go to whichever works in whichever time. So great job by Keita in the limited time but you know Garza just had it going more. I gotta shout out Peyton Pritchard. Pritchard 19 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists. He had some very uncharacteristic turnovers which kind of knocked him down a little bit. His shooting wasn't great, 5 of 13. But in the first quarter when things weren't going great and you know Pritchard came in and did a good job and carried a lot of the scoring load to, to get this kind of bench production. Especially on a night where Memphis had just kind of everybody contributing. They needed, they needed Pritchard to contribute what he did. So a good game from him. Now Sam Houser and Baylor Scheireman, this is a discussion that, that's going to start getting louder and louder. Hauser over three overall from three, four rebounds and assists to minus six. He does do other things now, but so does Baylor Scheireman and Baylor is not the shooter that that Hauser is. I mean Baylor missed the one three pointer that he took but four rebounds, three assists and a steal for him. It's gonna be interesting. It's gonna be an interesting kind of question moving forward. Does Baylor Scheireman step back into the starting lineup or do you keep Sam and the threat even the threat of his shooting? Don't want to overreact to him struggling or hitting a little bit of a tough streak right now. Shooting wise, you don't want to overreact to that. You don't want to put Jason Tatum in a situation, Jalen Brown in a situation where teams are helping off of Baylor a little bit more than they would help off of Sam. The threat of Sam Houser is still good enough even if the shots aren't falling. But it's a discussion that's going to get a little bit louder. So that's just something to watch. Okay, let's get to Jalen when we come back. Let's get to Jason when he come when we come back because Jason struggled and I'm okay with it. That's coming up next. LockedOn Celtics supercast.com LockedOn Celtics.supercast.com Jaylen Brown was incredible in this game. I, I, I don't know how the voters are going to vote. I know when I talk to people in and around Boston, yeah, oh, Jalen Brown's a lock. First team, all NBA guy. When you listen to guys on the national side, they, they talk about Jalen. In terms of second, second team. I think he's better than third team. I think that's pretty universal. But it's not universal that he's on the first team. But right now, the way he's playing, I've said this before, I'll repeat myself. It's the best basketball that he's played all year long. This is, he's better today than he was at the beginning of the season. He's playing with so much confidence. The dribbling is so much better. He's setting up his moves. He's, he's making a move and countering and countering the counters and spinning and getting himself the whole grizzlies defense was, was aimed at protecting the rim and he was still getting to the rim. And then he gets there and he's not forcing it. He's patient. It's the most patient I've seen him play. He's stopping and faking and using little Tricks to get fouls. And if, if the openings aren't there, he, he's passing and moving the ball. And he dropped 30 in this game by doing all of that stuff. And these are such important things for him to understand that you don't have to force Things to score 30. You can let the game come to you and you will score 30. Because Jalen, it's a 32nd game this season that he scored 30 points. It's incredible in the ball movement. We've talked about that. The assists, the potential assists, the way he moves the ball, the way he sees the floor, the way he's reading the game. Yeah. Did he make some mistakes in this. Yes, everybody made mistakes in this game. He had some bad turnovers at the end. Oh, God. A couple of the. Played great defense and then he bit on a couple of fakes and you're like, oh, man, jb, what are you doing? Because he did so many things great and then he just brain fart and, and. But aside from a couple of little mistakes which everybody makes in these games, he played, he played phenomenal. And he's, he's been, he's been great. He's not going to get the mvp, but at this point, I think he's. He should finish third. I think he should finish third in the voting, which is pretty good. And if you finish third in the all in the mvp, you should be first team all NBA. And I think he is first team all NBA. He's. He's just been like the best player by far, leading a team that very few people predicted to be even moderately good. They're the second seed and they have it outside chance of a run at the top seed. They won't finish, they won't finish any more than four or five games out of the top spot, which for this team is amazing. And that's. It's. Everybody but Jaylen Brown has been a monster part of this whole thing. So, yeah, that's, that was. He just played great. Okay. Jason Tatum did not play great, and that's fine. For the first time I watched the game here since he came back, and I'm like, okay, okay. He's, he's just. He doesn't have what he used to have. There are a few different drives where he drove, and I was like, oh, here comes the hammer. Oh, no, he can't get up. He can't quite get up when he's tired, right? He can. If a drive is coming like early in the game. The drives that he had, then he probably could have Dunked it. But as the game goes on and as he's extending his minutes, he played almost 31 in this game. As he's doing all of that, it's. It just takes a toll. And he's not exploding to the rim. He should have had two or three dunks in this game. Instead, they were. A couple of them were attempts at layups, one. One or two that missed and. Or they were kickouts. And you're like, I think he's getting up and saying, oh, I don't have it. I don't have that same burst. And so he's kind of kicking out at the last second. That's all fine. That is all fine to me. I actually enjoy seeing this part of. Because it. It reminds everybody that he's human and that he is rehabbing. He'll be fine in the next game. In. In. What's that? Sunday night against Minnesota. He'll have moments. He'll have great games, he'll have bad games. The rehab is not linear, right? It's not just a rocket ship straight up. It's a up and down. It's an up and down process that is going to have some good, some bad, and it's going to take some time. So this is a nice reminder of. It's going to take some time. That's all. So I thought he did a lot of other things, and I didn't think he was terrible necessarily. I mean, he was 3 of 15, he was 2 of 9. But I thought his rebounding was really good, the defensive rebounding. He led the team in defensive rebounds. He had eight. So he. He boxed out well and he rebounded well. And that right now, any little bit of these positives, that's. That's something you can. You can hang your hat on. He got to the free throw line six times. That's good. Getting to the free throw line is good. That's a sign of progress. Just a little up and down. And I think Tatum's going to be good. So that's fine. He played the 31 minutes. I think he might be due for a rest day soon. They may be hoping that they can get past Minnesota and okc, but maybe. Maybe he sits. Maybe he sits against Minnesota because they don't have Anthony Edwards. They might just say Tatum needs a break, will sit him against Minnesota so he can come out and play his normal self against okc. I would not be surprised by that. But we'll see. We'll see how he looks or how he feels and go from there. So you know, hey, listen, you take what you can get. You take these wins when you can get them. Not thrilled with how they got it, but they got it. And you chalk it up and you say, okay, it's a win. You, you, you had to fight to figure out how to do it. And it was great to see Derrick White come through. It's great to see Garza come through. Everybody else had their moments. How am I waiting till the 30th minute to talk about Ugo Gonzalez and his monster dunk at the end of the first half? What a play that was. Just. It's my boy. It's I, my, my adult son Hugo Gonzalez, who at my age, 53 having a 19 year old son is. That's, that would be my second child. But Ugo is, Ugo is great and I think he's struggling a little bit. I think he's, I don't know if it's a rookie, rookie wall. I don't know if he's kind of hit something there or if he's struggling to adjust now that Tatum is back. But that dunk, that play. Wow. Wow. So Celtics win. Next podcast is going to be Sunday after the Timberwolves game, so make sure you're subscribed. If you're not subscribed yet, this podcast is daily Monday through Friday.
