Boston Celtics overpower Charlotte Hornets with a suffocating fourth-quarter surge—can this new defensive edge carry them through the playoffs? John Karalis of Celtics On SI breaks down the Celtics’ 113-102 victory at TD Garden, spotlighting Jordan Walsh’s lockdown defense on LaMelo Ball and Jaylen Brown’s explosive 35-point performance. The show examines the playoff-like intensity, key momentum swings, and how Joe Mazzulla’s rotation—especially the patience with Nikola Vucevic—could shape Boston’s postseason destiny. Derrick White’s hot shooting and Payton Pritchard’s clutch minutes add layers to a deepening Celtics bench. Strategic insights cover the importance of ball movement versus isolation, how Celtics exploited Hornets’ defensive weaknesses, and what the return of Vucevic means for the center rotation. Plus, analysis of Boston’s final playoff push, upcoming battles with the New York Knicks and New Orleans Pelicans, and why trusting in Mazzulla’s decisions might be the key...

If your first bet Wins. Head to FanDuel.com to get started. Celtics get the win at TD Garden I am here at TD Garden on the concourse. A new background for me if you're watching on YouTube. Celtics win 113, 102 over the Charlotte Hornets. A big fourth quarter, big final. I'd say four or five minutes of the third and that's what got the job done. Later on I'll talk about Nicola Vuchovic. There's look, patience is a virtue. I thought he did a much better job in the second half, especially the fourth quarter. So we'll talk about that. How patience is necessary. Get to the stars doing their job and Jordan Walsh. But let's just start with I want to start with the the playoff feel of this game. This definitely felt like a we we talk about this as a potential first round matchup and I don't know where the Hornets are going to end up. They may end up out of the play in tournament, they may end up in the play in tournament and we could be going down to Charlotte in a couple of weeks. And if that, if that happens, then I'm kind of okay with it. I think it's, it'd be a really fun playoff series. I think what we saw in this game is kind of how it would go. It wouldn't be easy. The Hornets are a tough team. They're a good team. The expectations are much higher for them right now. At the same time, they have deficiencies, they have places you can attack. I think the Celtics can go in there and handle them in a way that, that would make this a short series, but a tough series. No doubt. But the, the playoff feel for this was. I thought there was a lot of pushing and shoving and grabbing and I thought the, the officials let a lot of stuff go there. There were. Things got a little chippy in there. There was a double foul that got challenged away, you know, and became just a foul on Jason Tatum. But they, the, the, the physicality was, was there. I think the physicality threw off the Celtics timing, the, the timing of their offense. And I, I think that kind of played into why this game was clunky for them in the, in the beginning, in the first, basically the first half. Joe Missoula after the game said, you know, I thought our defense kind of kept us in it. I thought the offense wasn't, wasn't what it needed to be. And I have, if I have any questions about the Celtics team, it is, how are they going to be in the playoffs? When it generally boils down to which team has the guys that you can attack and the Hornets, you know, you go after Khan, you go after LaMelo, and you, you try to make those guys defend and you have to force help and then you take advantage of that. But so much of a playoff game that slows down and gets physical ends up, hey, who's got conquer nipple on him? Come on up and set the pick, force a switch. And now I can attack this guy who's got Lamelo on him, come up, set a pick, force a switch, and so on. The Celtics offense is not at its best best when it's just force a switch, get them to, you know, attack one on one. They have to really move the ball and bend a defense to, to get the fluid kind of free flowing offense that we're used to seeing from them. Now that's not to say obviously they have two of the best isolation guys on the planet in Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown. But their offense, we look at what their offense has been lately, what have we been talking about getting Namish K to the ball on a roll and having him finish having, you know, getting into the paint and spraying and get that swing, swing, you know, secondary drive type of thing when those things happen. And there was one possession in the third quarter where it was just perfect, patient, all of that. Celtics got a turnover. I want to say maybe Derek brought the ball up, it got to the. Got to the wing, got to the corner. It was just pump fake attack. They recovered, pump fake attack again. And ultimately it got to a three pointer and it was just. I think there was a timeout after that one. That type of stuff is what the Celtics where they're their best. It's not just come down and attack every mismatch every time. Because while you're looking, hey, you got Jason Tatum on Concan nipple, you got Jalen Brown on. On Lamelo ball. Sure, that's great. But also when, if you're just attacking that you end up with, okay, that's great. But all of these other guys are standing around. There are times to attack. There are times to, to try to involve other guys. There. There's just different, different methods to attacking that kind of defense. And so I thought the Celtics in the second half did a much better job of attacking. They were, they were just quicker and involved more people. So. And they got out into transition, I think. Yeah, there we go. Sorry, I saw a little glitch on the video. So they got out into transition, they got out and. And ran. Jordan Walsh came in, had a steel and a dunk, and I think that just kind of like supercharged the offense. So the, the playoff element to this is a real interesting kind of glimpse into the future of Will the Celtics offense start to look a little clunkier now? Also, part of why it looked clunky is because they, they played Nikola Vucevic and it's just not where it needs to be yet. And that is again, I'm going to get to that in the last segment. That's something they need to work through. And it could just very simply be a matter of, hey, Vuch is back. We're working on it. We're trying. Don't worry about it. But I thought there were points in the offense where like in an alternate universe, Derrick White, the night that he was having, he was four of five from three, I believe the night that he was having offensively, in an alternate universe, the Celtics offense would have looked better or the ball movement would have been better earlier, and Derrick White would have gotten a lot more catch and shoot opportunities and he would have had a 30 point game. I I just feel like that's the type of shooting that Derrick White was showing us and when he's shooting like that, you kind of can't waste it. But he had three. Three out of the four were catch and shoot threes. And when Derek is getting the catch and shoot threes, that's where he's at his best. So just those little things, getting other guys, just the touches, getting the feel for the offense. I thought they could have done a better job with that. But the game changed in the third quarter. Seven and a half minutes to go. LaMelo Ball had 30, 32 points up to that point. But with at the seven and a half minute mark, Sam Houser checks out, Jordan Walsh checks in and Lamello Ball doesn't score another basket after that, just free throws after that. We'll get into Jordan Walsh's game. We'll get into the Stars finishing the job when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by FanDuel. NBA playoffs are right around the corner. Watch a show on YouTube. You can see me here at TD Garden. This is the concourse right outside section 2021. This is a little, you know, airplane tail action over here. I'm John Corrales. I cover the Celtics for Celtics on SI. I've been doing this job covering the Celtics for 20 years now. I've been doing this podcast for 10. So thank you for being an everydayer and joining me. Thank you for the people who come up to me. I sit right down here in section 19. So come on by and say hi if you're at TD Garden. Jordan Walsh, I think, was the difference maker in this game. If you're looking at someone other than Jalen Brown who, you know, just happened to score 30 points or 34 points, whatever it was, let me. I'll call it up. But Jordan Walsh, when he checked in, I just thought he did a really good job of kind of hounding Lamelo Ball and, you know, the length, the athleticism, you just did a great job. LaMelo had 36 points in this game. He had 34. When Jordan checked in, he didn't score a bucket. After that. He played 14 more minutes. He had, he was 0 for 2 and he had four free throws after that. So it's funny, Joe Missoula, after the game, he caught himself, he was saying, those guys, they have six or seven guys that can shoot them into a game. And then I know that he was going to say, look Listen, I'm going to call up the quote because I want to make sure that I get this right because he, he was gonna say that the, they were gonna shoot themselves out of the, the game. So let me just. Where is my Joe Missoula quotes? These guys, they have six, seven guys that can shoot. So they're going to shoot themselves into a game and then they're going to shoot it. You know, as long as you take care of the ball and take care of the other stuff, you'll be able to make a run. As long as you're controlling the things you can control. What I'm pretty sure Joe was about to say, and he caught himself was these guys, they have six or seven guys that can shoot, so they're going to shoot themselves into a game and then they're going to shoot themselves out of a game, which makes much more sense because that's kind of what they did. And it's one of those. With Lamelo, I feel like, yeah, he got super hot and then at the end he started fouling. He got out of rhythm and it kind of cascaded and he just couldn't hit a thing. Couldn't get, he couldn't get the shots that he wanted. He couldn't get a feel for the game anymore. And they shot themselves out of the game. There's just, that's just where the Charlotte Hornets are now. They are impressive. They are really good. No one wants to play them in the playoffs. I understand that. But also they're not that good yet. Right? This is their first taste of being good. They, they started off terribly, you know, injuries and whatever, but they still, they're not that good yet. They will be, have all the confidence in the world in them. It's not, it's not shade. It's just they're young and they're figuring it out. So anyway, Jordan comes in, plays great defense. The Celtics start getting out into transition. All of a sudden this game goes from a double digit lead for the, the Hornets and this, then it goes from that to a 133 run to end the third quarter and then a run at the beginning of the, of the fourth that pushes the whole thing to 29, 10, 2910 run. All of a sudden the Celtics now have a 12 point lead and that was it, that was a wrap. Jordan coming in I thought was the, the catalyst for the turnaround. And then at the end of the third, Peyton Pritchard scores nine of his 12 points. There's that 19 minutes and 31 seconds, the last 731 of the third and then the whole fourth quarter. In that stretch, you have nine points from Peyton Pritchard. You have 17 of Jalen's 35 in that, in that stretch. Jalen does a great job. Now he did have four turnovers. I don't think Jalen was his absolute best in this game, but he still managed to score 35 in this game. So he, he did enough. He obviously was, you know, got to the rim, he got to the free throw line. He did have those dominant stretches, but I also don't think he moved the ball as well as he could have. And so when I give him my player grades at the end of the game, I gave him an A minus instead of an A plus, which I think was fair. The five turnovers, four of them in a 19 minute stretch, not ideal, but he did help the Celtics close the door. Jason Tatum, same thing. Jason Tatum getting to his step backs. Those step backs are available now for him. He looks kind of like himself. He played 39 minutes, almost 39 minutes. Jalen Brown played the entire second half, so, and even Jalen afterwards was like, I wasn't planning on playing the whole second half, but these are, these are the playoff minutes. And again, I'm looking at Jason. I, I swear when I was thinking of the playoff run that they were going to have, I never would have thought that Jason would have gotten stretched out to 39 minutes ahead of the playoffs. This is, this is amazing. It's so out of care. I don't know what to make of Jason. Still. It's going to take, honestly, it's going to take the whole summer. It's going to take, you know, I would love to get a sit down with Jason just to kind of go through things. I don't care if it's me, whoever. I just need like half an hour of Jason really fully explaining. Once it's all over, once we're past the season, once he can stop with the, you know, the post game kind of grind and the, you know, getting away from basket, once he can get away from it and just kind of really reflect on it. I want to hear everything that he has to say because this is not normal. But again, his, the way he got right to his recovery and all of that stuff that really helped him out. I'm, I'm shocked that he's playing 39 minutes. I'm shocked. I'm shocked and I'm shocked that he was part of a fourth quarter kick. He's not just playing 39 minutes. He was part of a fourth quarter kick to put this game away. So incredible. Incredible for him. Just quickly on some of the other guys here who are, you know, just going down the box score because I want to save the third segment kind of specifically for V. Sam Houser. It doesn't look like Sam Houser is going to hit 40% shooting this year. He is currently at. What's his, what are his stats here? 39, 30, 38.7. Yeah, he's not going to get to 40 this year. It'll be a first. That'll be a first for him. Not only was he one of five from three and he got wide open shots. Listen, I love that Sam has gotten to be a much better defender and usually most of the time he's reliable and you can count on him to even on mismatches, what appear to be mismatches, you can count on him to kind of do a good job. Lamelo picked on him in this one and that's. It's no surprise that when he came out and Jordan went in, the game kind of changed. So nice. You know, he did some nice things. Solid, just a solid game. But overall, you know, defensively it was, it was a little bit tough. Keda, interesting game from Keda. I have to go back and look at it. 12 points, five rebounds, three assists. This is a normal, this is a normal Nimius Keita stat line. Now he had eight in the first quarter, two in the second quarter, I believe, and then that was it. Just one more bucket in the second half. Vuch played most of the fourth quarter and I don't know if that was just because hey, Vuch was looking pretty good or better and they just rolled with it. But Mimi had it. He was the reason in the first quarter why the Celtics were able to even stick around and keep it close. I know the, the, the Hornets went on a, a run to, to go up 11 at the end of the first quarter, but Nene's put backs, his just his finishing around the rim. He was a, he was the reason at the beginning where I joked around like, oh yeah, this is, this is the Lamelo ball Nami Eskeda duel that we expected, right? Because you never expect Nimi to be in a duel with anybody even though he's been scoring and he's been great, but not much in the second half. I gotta go back and look more closely as to why he was minimized. So you know, he only had three fouls so he wasn't in foul trouble. He did hurt his thumb, I think he hurt his thumb. So I don't know if that played a role in it. But regardless, a different game from Neemi, considering all of the talk these past couple of days have been about like how great Neemi is and he is. He has been great. I talked about Derek White already. Peyton Pritchard, I talked about already Jordan Walsh just nine minutes from Baylor, Charman, although I will say this, Baylor, nine minutes. Mostly a forgettable game in that in the last two minutes of the third quarter he hits a three, he misses one but gets his offensive rebound and then he feeds Peyton Pritchard for a three part of the run. So even though he had what no one's going to remember this game generally from from Baylor. But for two, he had two two and a half minutes where he was impactful and that matters. That helps the Celtics win. So just shout out to him for that. All right. Nicola Vuchevic, who did not play well in the first half, played much better in the second half and I'm just begging people to be patient here. We'll talk about Vuch when I come back. Add free audio plus access to our discord server at lockdown celtics.supercast.com Let me get to Vuch because obviously another, another tough game. Statistically, he was 1 of 10. The, the numbers aren't really kind to him. Two points, seven rebounds though, two assists, two steals, just one turnover that, you know, listen, the two steals, there's the one that Tip Steele that, that got out on to the break and this, you know, was part of a big six run, super important. But 1 of 10 from the field, 0 of 5 from 3. That's not great. Now I will say that 80% of the two games that that Nemi has played, I'm sorry that Vouch has played have not been good at all. But oh my God. And I don't want to, I, I don't want to make the whole podcast about things I see on social media, but it is some somewhat representative because it wasn't just like bots and stuff that were reacting. There's these are people that I respect that I think were it's easy to look at what Vuch is doing right now and say oh my God, this is terrible. But also know that he's been out for a month. He just got traded to Boston. He played a dozen games, then broke his finger and has been out for a month. It is a very difficult situation for him. Not only are you traded to a new place and trying to get up to speed, then you're hurt, then you're trying to figure things out. Then the main guy, the number one guy comes back and you got to figure all of this out. So there has to be A tiny bit of, There has to be a tiny bit of just patience and understanding here. The first game, awful. Just straight out awful. First half of this game, awful. The offense overall for him, the shooting has not been there. Let him figure it out. This, this, this injury was to his shooting hand. Please understand this. He spent a month not playing basketball, working on his left hand, which is great, but he could not shoot with his shooting hand. So it's been a month. Let him get back up to speed. Give him some time. This is actually a perfect luxury. So the Celtics now have three more games left. New York, New Orleans, and then was it Charlotte one more time at the end? Either way, however it goes, the Celtics are. The magic number is one. So they just need to win one more game here and or the Knicks lose one more game and that could both happen on Thursday and we'll be done. This is an opportunity to, to use these last few games to get Vuch as up to speed as you need him to. We know what Nimius Kada is. He's the starter. He's going to play 30 plus minutes. Generally speaking, we know what Luca Garza is. And all of the calls like, oh my God, I can't believe Luca Garza isn't playing. Why he should be playing. Do we not two things. Do we not remember how he's gone through long stretches of DNPs and just stepped right in? If anybody is able to stay focused, stay ready and be ready to step into the moment whenever it happens, it's Luca Garza. We know who he is. He knows who he is. He knows the team trusts him. He's right there. He gets it, he understands it. So he's fine. And after everything, Joe Missoula has pressed every right button all throughout the season. Why are people suddenly not not trusting him to figure out the backup center situation? Why would you not just trust Joe Missoula to give him a few games? Brad Stevens spoke before the game and that will be part of a bonus podcast. Brad spoke before the game and one of the things that he said was, and Vuch actually said this too after the last game, there's these three games, but there's also the week between the end of the season and the beginning of the playoffs, which will just be a bunch of practices and shoot arounds and all that stuff that will give him a ton of opportunity to get up to speed. So get this, get these games out of the way. Get some basketball under your belt. Get your legs under. That's what Joe was talking about. After the game, we need him to get his legs under him. He came out of that fourth quarter and he came to the bench and looked exhausted. He was cooked. And that's great. He's got to get his legs back. He's got to get his cardio back. Anybody sitting here thinking, nah, just sit him. It's the. No, absolutely not. It's the absolute wrong move to sit him now and just be like, it's Neemi, it's Garza, and forget it. It's too late. No, it's not too late. He has to play. He has to play more. Luca will be ready. What happens if Neemi gets hurt? He already has a bad thumb. Now he's been on and off the report with the. With a thumb injury and he tweaked something. He was holding his hand in this game. What if something happens and Neemi has to miss time? You gotta go. I would say Vuch probably starts, or even if Luca starts, Vuch has to play a lot. You're not going to play Luca Garza 48 minutes in a playoff series. You know you're not going to play him 48 minutes a game. You have to get Vuch up to speed. This is an opportunity to do that. Use these remaining games, if nothing else, to get him up and down the floor, to get him used to the game speed again, to get him used to his teammates. I'm telling you, Luca Garza is going to be fine. So don't worry about it. Just let this play out. It's going to be fine. Joe knows what he's doing. If it comes down to a game two or a game three, and Vuch isn't cutting it, he'll sit and they'll do something else. It'll be Luka, it'll be Jason at center. It'll be some other option, but we have to let Vuch get up to speed now. It doesn't matter. The magic number is 1. The Celtics are going to be the 2 seed. Everything else is fine. The chemistry is there. These guys know how to play with Luca. These guys know how to play with Nemi. They're still figuring out how to play with Vuch. So let them play with Vuch and get this thing figured out. It makes perfect sense. Don't live and die with these minutes at the end of the regular season. All right, so that's. That's my take on Celtics beating the Charlotte Hornets. They are one game away, a win or a Knicks loss from clinching the two seed. They have now won 54 games this season, which blows my mind. It is absolutely incredible. Unreal. Unreal that they are here. And Celtics Knicks on Thursday again, I will have a playoff preview. I mean a Knicks. I will. If the Celtics play the next I have a player preview too. But I already have a Celtics Knicks podcast recorded so I'll have a preview of that. I will have Brad Stevens what he said in a bonus podcast coming up. So it's already two podcasts planned. I will have a podcast with Tom Wesserholm coming up. I got tons and tons of podcasts here. Episode Theme:
A detailed breakdown of the Boston Celtics’ 113-102 comeback win over the Charlotte Hornets, with a focus on rookie Jordan Walsh’s pivotal defense against LaMelo Ball, how the Celtics seized control late, and the ongoing integration of Nikola Vucevic. John Karalis examines the playoff-like atmosphere, key player performances, and what these developments mean for Boston as the postseason approaches.
Karalis sets the context for a gritty, playoff-intensity victory where defensive adjustments and a timely spark by rookie Jordan Walsh turned the tide. The episode zooms in on tactical shifts, evolving playoff readiness, and patience with new personnel as Boston eyes a deep postseason run.
Physicality & Chippiness:
Karalis describes a “playoff feel” with considerable pushing, grabbing, and overall physicality. The refs let a lot go, which disrupted the Celtics’ offensive rhythm early:
"I thought the physicality threw off the Celtics timing... and I think that kind of played into why this game was clunky for them in the first half." (04:00)
Hornets Preview as Playoff Opponent:
Boston’s Offense: Mismatch-hunting vs. Ball Movement:
“It was just pump fake, attack... they recovered, pump fake, attack again… ultimately it got to a three pointer. That type of stuff is where the Celtics are at their best.” (09:30)
Walsh Checks In, Ball Checks Out:
At 7:30 left in the 3rd, Jordan Walsh comes in to replace Sam Hauser. Up to that moment, LaMelo Ball had 34 points; after Walsh enters, Ball doesn’t score another basket (only four free throws).
Karalis credits Walsh’s length and tenacity:
“When he checked in, I just thought he did a really good job of kind of hounding LaMelo Ball. The length, the athleticism, you just did a great job.” (16:10)
Momentum shift:
"All of a sudden this game goes from a double digit lead for the Hornets... to a 13-3 run to end the third quarter, and then a run at the beginning of the fourth that pushes the whole thing to 29-10." (20:40)
Joe Mazzulla’s Quote:
“These guys, they have six, seven guys that can shoot. So they're going to shoot themselves into a game, and then... you'll be able to make a run—as long as you’re controlling the things you can control.” (17:15)
Jaylen Brown:
“I gave him an A-minus instead of an A-plus… the five turnovers, four of them in a 19 minute stretch, not ideal.” (22:30)
Peyton Pritchard:
Jason Tatum:
“I’m shocked that he’s playing 39 minutes... and was part of a fourth quarter kick to put this game away.” (23:40)
“When he came out and Jordan went in, the game kind of changed.” (26:50)
“He was the reason… the Celtics were able to even stick around and keep it close in the first quarter.” (27:30)
“Even though he had what no one's going to remember… for two and a half minutes, he was impactful and that matters.” (28:40)
"He's been out for a month... He just got traded to Boston, played a dozen games, then broke his finger... there has to be a tiny bit of just patience and understanding here." (25:50)
“If it comes down to a game two or a game three, and Vuch isn't cutting it, he'll sit and they'll do something else. But we have to let Vuch get up to speed now.” (32:50)
On the Playoff Intensity:
“This definitely felt like a— we talk about this as a potential first round matchup… I think what we saw in this game is kind of how it would go. It wouldn’t be easy. The Hornets are a tough team.” (05:14)
On Jordan Walsh Changing the Game:
“Walsh came in, had a steal and a dunk, and I think that just kind of like supercharged the offense.” (11:30)
On Patience with Vucevic:
“He spent a month not playing basketball, working on his left hand, which is great, but he could not shoot with his shooting hand. So it's been a month. Let him get back up to speed. Give him some time.” (26:20)
On Jaylen Brown’s Mindset:
“Jalen Brown played the entire second half... even Jalen afterwards was like, 'I wasn’t planning on playing the whole second half, but these are the playoff minutes.'” (23:20)
Karalis closes by urging patience with underperforming players, praising the Celtics’ season-long resilience, and promising further playoff coverage.
“Thank you so much for doing it… Now the one thing I want everybody to do is share the podcast. Tell everybody they should be listening to and watching the Locked On Celtics podcast here on the Locked On Podcast Network. It’s your team every day.” (34:30)
