Boston Celtics stumble against the New York Knicks after their worst shooting night of the season. Can Jayson Tatum's looming return spark a resurgence? John Karalis of Celtics On SI breaks down the Celtics’ 22-point loss, spotlighting Jaylen Brown’s scoring barrage and Derrick White’s reliable play amid a shaky offensive performance. Discussion centers on the disruptive effects of Nikola Vucevic’s trade deadline arrival, the evolving double-big lineup featuring Luka Garza and Neemias Queta, and Joe Mazzulla’s defensive demands. Unpredictable officiating and Sam Hauser’s absence further complicated Boston’s quest for consistency. As Tatum scrimmages with coaches and eyes a March comeback, the Celtics confront critical questions about rotation stability and Eastern Conference positioning. Will this roster recalibration fuel a bounce-back—or prolong the growing pains as the All-Star break approaches?

Now on the Lockdown Celtics podcast, the worst shooting night of the season for the Celtics. Why this is going to take some time. Plus Jason Tatum back on the court. Welcome back to the Lockdown Celtics Podcast right here in the Lockdown Podcast Network. Where does your team every day your team is the Boston Celtics and I talk about them every Monday through Friday bonus podcast when they play in the weekend. So if you missed my bonus podcast from the Friday night game it was there. I did one. You can hear about that one. Celtics won that game. They lost this one to the New York Knicks. Today's show is brought to you by FanDuel. The Winter Games are on and there's no better way to follow them than then with a bet on fanduel. Yeah, the Winter Olympics. Go to fanduel. Play your game. If you're new to the show, I'm John Corrales. I'm a beat writer covering the Celtics for Sports Illustrated's Celtics on SI. I've been doing this job for about 20 years, a version of it, anyway. I've been covering, I've been doing this podcast for 10 and I've written a couple books about the team. Later on, we'll get to the report from Sham Sharania about Jayson Tatum taking a huge step forward, scrimmaging back on the court, you know, up and down, like real stuff. But with the caveat that's coming up later on, we're going to get to some individual performances. Jalen Brown, Derrick White and why. This is going to take some time, but let's just get into the flow of this game. The New York Knicks won it pretty easily. The Celtics scoring 89 points is, is the biggest thing to really focus on here because they shot 34 of 92 overall. 7 of 41, 7 of 41, three pointers. That's incredible. The, the Knicks doubled up the, the Celtics from the three point line. So that's 21 points right there. Just 21 points right there in the three, three point disparity and it's a 22 point win. It can just be that simple sometimes, it's not always. But for the Celtics, the missed shots, and not just missed shots, the ones that went halfway down and came back. Honestly, there was a point in the third quarter and I tweeted this out, I thought if the Celtics were able to get half the points and when the shot goes halfway down and then pops back out, if you're like, well, that went halfway in. So you get one and a half points or, or a half point on a two pointer, that a 13 point game that might have been tied at that point for the Celtics, they had so many go in and out. So step one here, not really their night and it's two straight nights where they've started out cold. They came back on Friday night and were able to kind of overcome that, but they weren't able to do that against the Knicks. So they continued that that whole second half. You know, the Knicks are a little bit better than the Miami Heat. So you don't have the same opportunity to kind of bounce back the way they did on Friday. This one, they could just never. Just never really quite get the momentum. You know, the. The third quarter, it was actually impressive for them to be down 5 when they were shooting so poorly. They. And it's not like they were defending great either, but they kept finding ways to keep it close. I thought the story of this game was going to be how the Celtics were able to keep it close and then maybe make a late run, a late push to kind of steal it because of how poorly they shot, because they kept getting, you know, giving up backdoor cuts. The defense wasn't really their best defensive effort overall. And I thought third quarter, they got it down to five, and I was like, man, they. They might have a chance here to kind of repeat the Miami game, work it down, find a way to get it into the fourth quarter kind of tied. And then it's. It's just 12 minutes of who wants it more. Can you find a way to hit some shots? But then they go on a three. Three minute, three and a half minute, just slump. Cold shooting, and you go from 5 to down 15. All of a sudden in New York just comes back and just takes control again. Fourth quarter before New York ran away with it. You come out, vouch gets a layup, Pritchard finally hits a shot, he hits a three, and you're like, you know, it's. It's only a 12 point game. You give up a couple of shots, you get it back down to 12, and you feel like it's still there. So at that point, a couple minutes into the fourth quarter, the Celtics, despite playing poorly, are within striking distance. 12 points with nine. 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter. That's plenty of time. Catch a little bit of a heater, somebody gets going. Derek White, who was shooting pretty well, one of these guys just bang, bang, bang. And all of a sudden you're in a back and forth game, very easy, but then turn over foul, a three point shooter, and the momentum goes away again. And so that, that's. That was the. The. The story of this game. The Celtics without consistent shooting. As Joe Missoula said after the game, that puts a lot of pressure on the defense because now you feel like you got to come down and get a stop. Every mistake is magnified, every miss gets magnified. Then you have a stretch where the officiating kind of changes, where they Started. They went from calling everything to calling nothing. And it would. And look, it was both sides. This is not a complaint about the officiating. It was just the flow of the officiating was. At one point they were calling a bunch of files. Then he started calling nothing. Both. Both teams were like, super frustrated. But the Celtics, I think they let that frustration kind of carry over to the. The. The other end, and they. They just started making too many mistakes. The missed shots and all of this. It got to be a little bit too much for them. And so it ends up in a loss. I'm not too, too worried about the loss necessarily. It sucks that it came to the Knicks because the Celtics and Knicks are jockeying for position. And as of right now, they. They are tied in the. They're tied for. Tied for second at 34:19. But the Knicks, you know, winning. We're talking about tiebreakers now. If it comes to that. The Celtics are going to be a disadvantage, but they're. They're right there. And so you. You. This is a game that you would have hoped to. To have won. No. Sam Houser, on a night where the Celtics didn't shoot well at all, you might say, well, Sam Houser could have easily gotten swept up in this, and he got. He didn't shoot well against Miami. So there's no guarantee, you know, he could. He can be streaky, obviously, but it would have been great to have at least one of their shooters, another. At least somebody. That's one more chance for somebody to get going. And it didn't. And so that. That's. That. So they lost. We'll come back here. We'll talk about Jalen Brown, Derrick White, and why this takes time when you're adding somebody at the trade deadline. This. This is maybe a little bit more disruptive than we thought. That's coming up. Today's show is brought to you by Prize Picks. Shoot your shot on Prize picks and get $50 instantly in lineups when you play your first $5. That's right. February 9th is the deadline, so you basically have one more day to use the code Vucevich for a free month. You want to pay up front. It's 50 bucks for the year. So okay, let's get back to some of these individual performances. Really, only two guys had anywhere close to a decent offensive game. Got to start with Derrick White 7 of 143 of 9 from 3. I, if, if anything in this game, I would have liked to see more from Derrick White. And this is, this is almost like I obviously unabashed, like I think Derrick White is, is a incredible basketball player and his commitment to making the right play, playing the right way. This is one of those games where I'm like, could you maybe not play the right way a little bit and take a couple more shots because you're the only one that's hitting. Get into the mid range, get into the teeth of the defense, feel, feel the game a little bit and just say, ha, I'm the only one that has it right now. A couple, just two, three, four more shots just to. On a night like this, I would have loved to have had a little bit more Derrick White. But sadly, which is not really sadly, Derrick White's claim to fame, one of the best things about him is that he will make the right play and trust his teammates, which you should, you really should. You trust your teammates. And you know, this is, this is where, you know, I'll call myself out if Derrick White makes a great pass and Shireman hits a three or maybe Pritchard gets going. If a couple of those shots fall, then it becomes, wow, look at how unselfish. Look at the way he's distributing the ball. And then if it's not, if it doesn't happen, like on a game like tonight, you're like, man, 14 shots couldn't, you've taken 17, couldn't even take an 18 because the Celtics really needed some scoring. So I understand that very result results based analysis there. But Derek White played great. Jalen Brown had stretches of playing really, really good basketball. 26 points, but 11 of 25 shooting. So not really the most efficient night. 04 from three. Got to the line four times. Jalen will absolutely tell you that he should have gotten to the line more than four times, which is probably valid. I think both sides can sit, can say we should have gotten to the line more. That is also valid. The officiating was weird that they had a stretch where it just felt like every call was being made and then all of a sudden they just let them both play. And again, it was on both sides. So if, if the Knicks had turned around and lost, they would have sat there and said, man, the officiating just changed in the middle of that game. It kind of changed for everybody. And you have to, you have to deal with that sometimes. I think the Celtics did get a little frustrated there that Jaylen got a little frustrated he definitely did because there was one play where he. He drove, he didn't get a foul on Carl Anthony Towns. He came back down. He just was straight shoving Cat, like, just not going to call it. So I'm just going to keep shoving. So Jaylen was certainly frustrated by the inconsistency, and it showed up. And on a night where you're not shooting great, you have inconsistencies on the officiating side. The losing team says, man, I'm frustrated by this. The winning team says, hey, you played through it. So it was absolutely a game where if the situation was flipped and it was the Knicks who ended up. If the Celtics had actually hit some shots, came back and won the guarantee, the Knicks would have been able to say, oh, man, that third quarter, fourth quarter, they started, they stopped calling fouls. That kind of changed the game. So Jalen was frustrated by that. So. But he had a stretch in this. In the second quarter where he was. It was just the Jalen Brown show. And if it wasn't for him, the Celtics wouldn't have kept it close. They were absolutely keeping it close early because Jalen was keeping it close for them. And we were waiting for someone else to kind of take over. And this is where the it takes time bit comes in because once again, the Celtics went double big, and I wasn't thrilled with how it worked. Luca Garza might be like the. The one guy that is. Is going to see the most impact in this Vusovich trade because again, Vuch does Vuchovic in this trade, where Vuch does a lot of the same things. And obviously Garza is a better offensive rebounder, but Vuch is a better defensive rebounder and is a better passer. They're about the same shooting, even though Garza is having a really good shooting season. He was 0 for 3 in this game, though Vuch was one of six. So neither. No, again, no one could hit. They were 7 of 41 in this game. So no one could hit shots outside of Derrick White, who hit three of nine. And even that is, you know, you hit one more, you're shooting 40%. So. But the double big lineup as a result of this trade, I think is a little bit of a reward for Garza who played so well, played so hard, and. And was one of the. The keys to this, the. The Celtics being a second seed. And this is going to be the interesting part moving forward, how this trade impacts the Celtics. Vuch is coming in off the bench right now. Is he going to continue coming in off the bench. Keda has earned the significant minutes. I can hear the argument for sure. I've made the argument that you start Vuchevic and you bring Keda off the bench or if you want to go the other way, that's fine. I think it's going to be like a 50, 50 kind of argument. But I don't think you go double big. I just don't think with these bigs in particular. It's one thing when you have Al Horford and Christoph Sporzingis. I, I just don't think with Garza and Keda, those aren't, that's not going to be their strengths. That's not how you, that's not how it's going to work. I don't think. And so I don't like the double bigs. It worked against Houston, so I understand you say okay, it didn't work against Miami. They're a small team. The Knicks are kind of an in between. They've got size but they're more, they're, you know, they, it worked. It didn't work as well as it did in Houston. It didn't work as poorly as it did against Miami. Just still wasn't great. I don't like it. They might try it again heading into the All Star break when they host Chicago on Wednesday. Side note, amazing that Anthony Simons is coming right back right away, but I don't, I don't know that this is going to be the way the lineup looks the rest of the way. And it might be Garza that ends up losing the most minutes because of it. And it's, which is a shame because he's, he's worked so hard having him and Simons together and like guys missing shots and he goes in and rebounds and Simon's getting hot. You, you just. Pritchard, Pritchard did not have a good game at all. Like he was just, just a rough one here. 2 of 9 shooting, 1 of 6 from 3, 6 points of minus 27. He did have seven assists but it was just a rough overall game for him. The. You, you have to have that, that kind of spark off the bench which Pritchard has been. He was averaging 26 points a game in his six man role in three games. Didn't have it in this one. But you're hoping to kind of recreate with Pritchard and Vuchovic the, the, the kind like an upgraded version of what Simons and Garza were able to do. I just don't know if Garza starting is the way to Kind of get to that. It may just end up being that, you know, and again, no Sam Hauser. So we don't know if, if Hauser would have started this game. There's also that element here. But if you, if you started Hauser and you go with Brown, Keda, Shireman, White, Hauser with Prichard Vuchovic off the bench and then some combination of Ugo, Ron Harper, Jordan Walsh, that, that just might be the way to go. And Garza is there in case of foul trouble or in case one of the other guys is ineffective. I think that's going to end up being how it is. But this is, this is going to take time. The whole thing is going to take time. Vuch comes in, he's, you know, looking around, he's maybe not exactly what he's going to be eventually. The guys might be trying a little too hard to integrate him. He might be a little too passive to, you know, so you've got like everybody going, no, no, no, take the shots. And he's like, no, no, no, no, you take the shots. I'm just, you know, trying to fit in. There's a little bit of that that could be happening here. So I'm not going to judge this trade just yet based on, you know, one decent game, one really good quarter from Vuch and then the, you know, what we've, what we saw against the Knicks, but there it is, a disruption. This is a disruption. This is going to be a challenge. And it's kind of actually good that the All Star break is coming up. Chicago, they're a little bit of a mess, so they could still go two and one after the, the trade. You can take the, the film into the All Star break, really dive into it, dissect it, and, you know, you can give Vuch a little bit of time wherever he goes, maybe he comes back a little bit early or you give him the video, you know, when he, wherever he is, whatever beach he's on and give him something to work on as far at least mentally, at least processing wise. So all of that stuff is something that is going to happen eventually. I'm not worked up about this, even though it's the Knicks and I wish they would have won, but hey, this is what happens. And because of the new dynamic, it will take some time. All right. As far as I'm concerned, that's all I need to say about the game. Especially because before the game, Sham Sharania said Jason Tatum is scrimmaging. We'll talk about that when I Come back. Today's show is brought to you by FanDuel. The Winter Games are officially here. Hey, the Super Bowl. Like I'm recording this before the Super Bowl. Maybe you'll hear it as the super bowl is going on. But check them both out afterwards if you want to check out Locked On Knicks to get their take on what happened in this game. Feel free, go check it out. So whatever your whatever you want to listen to sports wise, we got it here on the Lockdown Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast network on the planet. Before the game, Shamshirani of ESPN on ABC said that Jason Tatum is scrimmaging again. It's five on five against the coaches, which falls in line with what the progression was that that Brad Stevens laid out so on on the broadcast. Sharania said it's controlled 5 on 5 scrimmaging with coaches in December, early December. Brad Stevens said there are several weeks of progression scripted against small groups, scripted against bigger groups, scripted five on five, scripted random all the way through those. And so it seems like scripted five on five is where we're at. Controlled five on five scrimmaging with coaches is exactly what scripted five on five sounds like. So the next step, however long this step takes, is unscripted five on five, which means the if you heard Tyrese Halliburton say this like a week ago or so, getting out there, it's going to be like Amari Williams and you know, Ron Harper Jr. And Max Shilga. You know, you might, you might even see, you might even see Jason Tatum has been assigned to the main Red Claw, main, main Celtics for today's practice. And what that means is the main Celtics on whatever, you know, off day they have are all going to come down to Boston and he'll scrimmage with them at the facility that's happened before. Or they may not even assign him there. I don't know. They, they may have to. But regardless, that type of thing is the next step. So Tatum scrimmaging now against coaches, controlled scrimmaging. And again, we don't know how long this has been happening. This might have just been a thing that, hey espn, it's the ABC game. Let's get this out there for all of the stuff, all the hesitance and you know, I don't know, I don't want to screw things up and all that. Tatum's information has been very controlled drops very, very specific and, you know, the fact that this is against the Knicks, I thought that this might be a game where he actually returned. To have this information come out is kind of like the next best thing for him. Hey, I'm scrimmaging him on my way back. And so that becomes a story. Like, early in the game, in the first quarter, I was, you know, taking breaks, you know, during. During breaks and writing a quick story about, here comes Tatum, he's coming back. Like, that becomes part of the media cycle. Now Jason Tatum is closer to coming back. My original way back, when I was originally saying Jason Tatum is going to come back, I said early March. Early March seems like it's going to be the best thing. Obviously, he's not coming back against Chicago. Then you have the All Star break. Then you have a road trip after that out West. So early March feels like it's still kind of within the wheelhouse of him coming back. It gives him enough time to return, enough time to knock off the rust, come in. Almost guaranteed to be strict minutes, restrictions to start, short bursts. Kind of maybe come off the bench, play, you know, a few minutes, maybe in the first quarter, maybe you. Maybe you start the second quarter and play five, six minutes, come on out, go into halftime, do it again to start the fourth quarter. Maybe you do something like that. Very controlled, very limited to start, see how you feel. Don't go overboard now. One element of the report from Shams was that Tatum obviously still has more boxes to check and all of that stuff. But then he also said that Tatum, he said, I'll read the quote. From my understanding, he wants to come back as close to Jason Tatum as Jayson Tatum as possible. Not a shell of himself, not a percentage of himself. So that is. It seems to suggest that he could come back at some point, but maybe he doesn't want to come back at 80%. He wants to feel like I am 100%, which he won't be. He won't be 100%, but maybe he wants to feel 100%. And then he'll come in and realize, oh, God, I'm not. I'm still not 100. I'm not anywhere close that I think might delay some of the. The comeback stuff. So it's something to watch for. But they say he wants to come back as close to himself as possible. So we'll see. But an important milestone for sure. Guys are, you know, are starting to screen. You hear, like I said, Halliburton talking about he's going through scourges. Damian Lillard's in the three point contest. We found out today. So that's happening. I don't know where that came from, but hey, he's in the three point contest, so that's fine. These guys are starting to come back. We're starting to see real basketball out of these guys. So Jason Tatum will be back at some point. I still think March is going to be the way it works out because it's still another month from now. Right? And let me just. I'll pull up the Celtics schedule because he said home game and the so in February, the first home game is February 27th, which is possible. You have Philly on Sunday, March 1st, Charlotte on Wednesday, March 4th, Dallas on the 6th, then a road trip and then you've got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 home games in that next week, two weeks that you have an opportunity to come back. So Charlotte on the fourth, Dallas on the sixth. That could be another time to target. And this is February 8th, so another month, the 6th on that Friday night before heading out on the road could be a way to go. So keep an eye on it. We'll see. So the Celtics lose to the Knicks. Jason Tatum could be coming back soon. Fun. We got a couple of days off before the final game hitting into the All Star break, so. But I'll be here all week, all five days. We'll have some fun with the All Star break and all of that stuff. So make sure you're subscribed wherever you get your podcast. You never know what kind of surprises we might come up with.
