John Karalis of Celtics On SI diagnoses the Celtics’ collapse, exposing how a lack of ball movement and ineffective mismatch hunting doomed the starters. There will be a game seven. The Sixers just dominate the Celtics through three quarters. The bench shows the starters how it's supposed to be done because the starters can't get past their one terrible habit. How we finish locked on self po Home of the winners. Hey there. Welcome back to the show. I am John Corrales. Today's show is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $200 and 50. $250 in bonus bets. If your first bet Wins, head to FanDuel.com to get started. Here I am in a place I didn't want to be, the Xfinity Mobile arena in Philadelphia with a result that I didn't want to have to talk about. Celtics losing a game six and heading to a game seven. I cannot begin to express the frustration, but I'm not going to go on a big rant like I did in game five. I'm going to try not to. Later on we'll get to. Hey, Derrick White. Hit some shots. That's good. The Joel Embiid problem, the Namish K problem. But we got to start here right at the top. Why did the Celtics lose this game? It was 106.93, but it really was was worse than that. The biggest lead for The Sixers was 23 in this game. They came out, they looked super confident from the beginning. The Celtics looked discombobulated from the beginning. But, but, but before I get to the matchup hunting and all that, I just want to say that the Celtics had a ton of chances in this game. So there they can look at it, the most positive. Celtics fans can look at it and say if you hit some shots or early in the game and take advantage of what the Sixers were doing here in the first quarter, the Sixers shot, let's see here, 8 of 24 in the first quarter. The Celtics shot 9 of 19. They had a three point lead in the first quarter, but because of turnovers, because the, the Celtics were just kind of playing slow. The Sixers had more shots and they put up, they were able to kind of stay close. The Sixers had 20 points in the first quarter. The Celtics had so many chances, so many chances to make this a bigger lead, a bigger problem, and they couldn't. In the second quarter, they gave up 38 points. And once again, the Celtics had chances that they couldn't take advantage of. When that happens and the Celtics come down and start mismatch hunting, now we start to see the problems. This is where the Celtics get into a real, real bad habit. And that was the topic after the game. It was the topic of my questions after the game. And the guys didn't shy away from it. Joe Missoula, Jaylen Brown, Jason Tatum, they all basically admit they, they understand what you, what's happening. They just for some reason couldn't pull out of that. They talked about adjustments that the Sixers have made and all of that stuff. And I'm not even sure what adjustments the Sixers could make that would still take the Celtics away from ball movement and running the offense, you can say they've made some adjustments here and there. That, that's fine. But when the Celtics come down and hunt mismatches, when Jalen Brown is the prime suspect. Jalen, Jason Tatum did it. Jalen was the worst of it tonight. Jalen was bad. They slow things down to a point where the entire Sixers defense can, can function in a way that it hasn't all season. The Celtics, this is a big symptom here. They had eight. They had eight offensive rebounds in the game, but through the first three quarters they had three. So they had five offensive rebounds in the, in the fourth quarter, which is perfect. This is actually perfect because in the fourth quarter, this. Joe pulls the starters. You put in a lineup of Pritchard Shireman, Ron Harper, was it Luca Garza and Jordan Walsh. That was the lineup. And now, of course, the Sixers for sure. They're up 20 something. Here come. Here come the. The. The end of the Celtics bench. And I'm sure they let up a little bit. So I'm not going to say this was entirely just, oh, wow. The Sixers were trying their absolute best, and the Celtics still were able to pick them apart. But the Celtics ran, and Jason, to his credit, said it after the game, they were playing Celtics basketball. It was inspiring to see them. They. They actually inspired the starters. They went out there and played Celtics basketball. It was. I hope, I hope beyond hope that these guys actually sat on the bench and said, oh, look at this. Look at this ball movement. Look at them setting screens and passing and. And making the Sixers defense make decisions. The Sixers had their starters out there. Look at these guys on the bench. And. And what happens. You start to hit shots, you go on an 11, 0 run, you get offensive rebounds. They had five offensive rebounds in that quarter. And you can say, okay, number one, why doesn't Joe play some of these guys earlier in the game? Totally fair. Absolutely fair. That should be the case as well. You need to play. Play those guys a little bit more. I don't know why he doesn't go to that sometimes. That is a fair criticism. At the same time, why does Jalen. Why does Jason. Why do they insist. Insist on just matchup hunting? It doesn't make sense to me. And Jason said it after. We. We have good intentions. Like, yeah, of course you have good intentions. You're not going out there to try to, like, be stagnant and slow. You think you have a matchup, you're like, okay, no problem. We're. We're not hitting shots. I can do this. I got this matchup. But they just keep doing it over and over and over. The Celtics won two games in this series by 32 points. They have looked awesome in this series by moving the ball, setting the good screens, making plays, getting into the paint, making plays off of that, attacking, getting downhill. Where has that gone? The Sixers defense is not a good defense. Defense. They are a mediocre defense that when you play this way, can look really, really good because you have Jaylen going up against Maxi. Okay, fine. You want to attack that mismatch. Totally fine. I've said this on the podcast before. Don't just come down and post him up and take 5, 6, 7 seconds to make your move. You want to attack that mismatch. Get it and go. Play fast. Get it, make your move and go. And if it's not there, pass the ball and get it back. Reset, go set a screen, right? If you, if you're Jalen Brown and I saw this so many times, especially early in the game, it drove me nuts. Celtics are starting to get a little bit of momentum. The Sixes are missing. The Celtics get stops and then you come down and you're playing in transition. And then it's Jalen Brown. Oh, I got VJ Edge comb. I'm going to post up Vijay Edgecomb. Jalen Brown barely ever played out of the post this season. Barely ever. He was not a post up player. Now that's great when you got a mismatch and you go and you play fast. Get it against Vijay and go get it. Make a spin move. Get it. Reverse pivot. Make a move. Go. Sure. Do that. That's fine. Don't get it back up. Do the. Oh, okay, I'm gonna do this. Okay, now I'm gonna do this. And now I'm gonna dribble, dribble, dribble. You know, jab step. Jabs have jab step. Now what are you doing? You. All you're doing is saying, okay, Vijay, you play your defense now. Everybody around you is, is standing. Your teammates are standing. The defense is standing. Essentially. You let the, the Sixers play zone without actually playing zone because they're all just standing there in the middle, not guarding anybody in particular because nobody on the Celtics is moving. They're just standing and watching Jalen Brown post up. VJ Edgecomb cannot do that. That is not Celtics basketball. That is not winning basketball. There's attacking mismatches and then there's being stagnant and playing one on one. Hero ball, ISO ball. The Celtics have to move the ball. That's it. You Derrick White. I guess I'm going to talk about the Derrick White hitting shots now because Derek, as I go through my box score was 3 of 8, 3 of 6 from 3. 3 of 6 from 3. Derek has been just in a complete funk all series long, all season long, for the most part. He finally starts hitting shots and you don't. You don't want to get him the ball. Are you kidding me? If you're the Celtics, if you're sitting there on the floor and you say, oh, wow, D. White's actually hit a couple of shots here. Let's, let's figure, hey, let's run a couple of plays for him. Joe Missoula, call a, like a, a zoom play. Call a play, a pin down for him coming out of the corner. Let Derrick White catch the ball. Maybe he can turn and step into a shot. Maybe he can. Just when people, when his defender sees him coming off of that pin down, his defender goes, oh, crap, it's Derek White. And he's hitting. Now steps out D. White blows by him. Now he gets into the middle of the lane. Now you get a Derrick White floater. Now you get a Derrick White drive and kick. That's the Celtics offense. That's what the Celtics need to be. Why am I saying this? I'm a podcaster. I am old and I've got a few extra pounds on me. And I'm sitting here, I'm like, I know that this is how you're supposed to play. Why aren't you doing it? I'm gonna continue this. Jalen Brown in, in the offense and all that. The Namish kid a problem. That's all coming up next. Today's show is brought to you by DoorDash. So make sure you subscribe wherever you get your podcast, watch the show on YouTube, get into the comment section. Lots of people in the comment section already, I'm sure. So thank you for doing that. Thank you for joining me. I'm John Corrales. I cover the Celtics 4 Sports Illustrated Celtics on SI. I've been covering the team for about 20 years now, doing this podcast for 10 and haven't been this frustrated in a while with the Celtics. And the lack of offensive rebounding is another byproduct of the stagnant offense. Because when the entire defense can stand around behind a play, when that play misses, there's no lane for anybody to cut through and step in and get a rebound. When you're crashing from the corner, there's just no lane to come in and snag one of those. Can you, can you play more Baylor? Shireman? A little bit more Jordan? Walsh? I don't know. You throw Ugo out there. I mean, he's, look, he's a rookie. It's. I know he's had experience, pro experience, but just Joe's not going to play the rookie in this situation. Maybe it's something you dip into in desperation if this is how game seven goes. But for the most part, even if you play these guys, it's hard to come in and grab a rebound when everything is stagnant. And not only that, everybody's standing around. It's tough when you're on offense. You're just sitting there like, okay, Jalen, I'm just going to be here waiting for you to be an outlet. Like if you need to pass, if you're going to pass ever, I'm here. And then he takes the shot. And it's just tough to get in there, snake in there and get that rebound when that's happening. So it's another reason to move the ball, move yourself. Start the offense in Derrick White's hands. Start the offense in Peyton Pritchard's hands. Stop having Jalen and Jason initiate everything again. This Celtics offense was the number two offense in the NBA this year because they didn't play this way. The Celtics offense was great this year and for some reason, when the excrement hits the spinning blades, these guys revert to, hey, you know what's great? Let's get away from everything that worked all year long and let's go and try this. I appreciate that Jalen and Jason are incredible players and incredible one on one players. If there was a one on one tournament at the All Star weekend, those two guys would have a great chance at winning. But the more they do, the more they try to do, the worse it gets. Jalen had what, five turnovers in this game? Five. Jason had three. Those are damaging. I think he's up to 10 or 11 offensive fouls in this series because they're playing such tight defense that he constantly has to push off. And they're looking for it like, this is, this is the thing that, that really bothers me the most. You know how this is being called? This is game six. It's been called all series long. Adjust, adjust. You know, they're looking for the push off. I don't care that it's been allowed all season long. I don't. They're looking for that extended arm. They're looking for it. Now Keda is another problem here because Keda continues to just get into foul trouble. And you can argue, well, Kelly Oubrey flopped. Yeah, but that was also. That was an illegal screen. Did Kelly Oubrey flop? Yes. Maybe the Celtics should start flopping, make. Make this a flop fest. Maybe the Celtics can get some calls. But until then, you gotta. You just. He's got to be more solid. This is what I talked about in yesterday's podcast and this is, I think the sad reality here for the playoffs is all of the things that the Celtics were able to get away with in the regular season. As Tom was making this point in yesterday's podcast, you get guy, you get teams on back to backs in three and four. You know, three games and four nights or, you know, teams that are trying to figure out themselves and they're not game planning for you. You're able to have, like, Kane is able to be really good and, and have great games and, and, and progress and all of that stuff. But in a series where they're game planning and they've had days to prepare for you and they really pick at all of the things that you do poorly and fouls have been like, if there's anything that we knew Namish Kada could do is get into foul trouble. That's been the biggest kind of issue here. We are. And he's. He is not adjusting either. Stop setting the picks with your open arms. Stop leaning. You just. They're calling, they're calling those fouls. This is game six. They are calling these fouls. But the lack of, like, at the beginning of the season, remember we joked even, even Brad Stevens was like, hey, we know that these aren't the best centers on paper. They're going to have to go out and prove it. And during the course of the regular season, they proved it. But now it's the playoffs and you got to prove it again. Nothing is handed to you. Nothing is giving to. Given to you. So go out there and prove that you're capable of playing and playing well and not get caught up in whatever it is that's upstairs that is, is. Is getting you into foul trouble. Lakeda, this is a big problem because I have said Keita is in the middle of everything. The Celtics tend to do well. He's the one that's setting good screens. He's the one that's supposed to be setting good screens. And it's everybody. There's no doubt. But I'm singling out, obviously, Tatum and Jalen, you know, both of these guys need to be singled out. Derrick White has been a problem for a lot of this series, but the, the shooting, hopefully the shooting is starting to come around. And he's done other things. It's just the past couple of games, but honestly, Derek is the canary in the, in the, in the coal mine. The canary in the coal mine is the saying, when Derek looks this bad, it's typically the whole offense that is the, the problem. He's the symptom. He's the, he's the guy. He's the, the. The melanoma. He's like that spot, like, oh, geez, I probably should get a dermatologist to look at this when he's playing that bad. That's that thing when, when The Celtics offense is playing its best. Derek is the guy that benefits and plays better and you can see the the ultimate kind of contribution that he makes. And so that is on the Jays. It is also on Keita to set the good screens and roll and make the right plays. And he is being sped up. He is not finishing around the rim like he normally was during the course of the season. He has to be better. Vuchovic has to be better. He has to be better. Let's come back. Let's talk about the Joel Embiid thing and all of that when we return. Lockdown celtics.supercast.com so the Joel Embiid thing, like Joel Embiid, the Celtics let him off the hook. He shot 6 of 18, 1 of 5 from 3. He had 19 points. But he was not efficient. And the Celtics. He was gassed. He was gassed in this game. And the Celtics just this is another byproduct of the offense. You know, The Celtics had nine games, by the way, this year. Nine games where they scored under 100 points. That's basically 11 of their games this year. 11 of their games with less than 100 points. They have three out of six in this series with less than 100 points because of the way the offense is running. And the way the offense is running is letting Embiid stay on the floor. How many minutes did he play? He played 34 minutes. Should not be having he should not let Embiid be on the floor for 34 minutes. That's garbage. It's garbage. He should be on the floor for 26 minutes, 28 minutes because he's too tired and he's asking out. But the Celtics do Not want to play the way they're supposed to. So where do you want to put the blame? You want to put it on Joe Missoula? He deserves some of it for sure. You want to put it on Jalen Brown. He deserves a lot of it for this game. Jason Tatum, some of it for this game. Now, Jason came out, he had some sort of issue with his left calf. He said it after the game. He said it got a little tight. You saw him kind of trying to work through it. He was running and jumping and he seemed like it was okay. He was on the bike. He said it got stiff. I don't know what that means. Stiff calf. I don't like that. I don't like that at all. Calf is a scary thing for a guy who just tore his Achilles. It was his left calf, not his right one. So it's not the one that was repaired. It was his other one. He says he might. He's. He's expecting to play. We'll see. We'll see. Listen, I would rather lose a Game 7 than lose Jason Tatum again. We can't have that again. So just keep that in mind. Boston Celtics. I don't know what else to say about this. It all comes down to offensive execution. Because you come down that. That helps you set your defense. You can you. In fact, I don't think the defense was bad. They gave up 1/4 of 38, but they also gave up 20, 24 and 24. That's good enough. That is good enough. Giving up 20, 24 and 24. You have one quarter where you got to play better, and that starts with the offense. That's good enough. 106 points is. That's not insurmountable. Giving up 106 points, it's a little bit more than you want to, but also it's. It's not that bad. And you clean up that 1/4, that 38 point quarter, and you hold them to 100 or less. It's the offense. It is the offense. I don't know how. How many other ways I can put it. The problem is the offense, and that starts with Jason and Jaylen and Joe. And you've got to run better offense. You've got to run with pace, you got to play with tempo. You got to just start the offense more often with, with Derek and with Peyton, whoever's out on the floor. Derek's the point guard. Get Tatum and Brown on the move. They. They ran some creative stuff earlier in the game, and then it just kind of went away. So I. I will always go players first. The players are the ones that are out there. The players are the ones that are hunting the mismatches. Jalen and Jason are the one. They are the focal points. So what they decide to do is first and foremost the issue. So I put the blame almost always on the players first. A lot of people are going to say Joe Missoula got out coached. I think that's a default setting for a lot of people. I don't know what people will say. He got out, coach. And then they will. I don't know what that means for, like, people can't even properly explain it. They say no adjustments. Well, he. He does make adjustments. He just. You want adjustments to be the personnel, which is fine. Absolutely fine. A little bit more Baylor Shireman, but also Baylor Shireman, you know, has his own faults defensively, sometimes against these quicker guards. And so Tyrese Maxey killed them in this game. He was so fast. He got to the rim so easily. And that's. That's not going to be solved by Baylor Shireman. So this, to me is simply a case of Jalen and Jason to game seven. Do not think that you're going to win this by yourselves. I thought Jason was going to have a great game because he. He hit his first two three pointers that he stepped into and. And that kind of went away. Don't think you're going to do it yourself. You have to involve everybody else. You have to involve everybody else. You need Derek to get going. You need Mimi to catch a lob or two or something. You need to have everybody be a part of this. You need to move the ball. So when you do miss somebody has a lane to crash and get an offensive rebound. It's just that simple. It is just that simple. Game seven on Saturday. Let me check one more time, because I haven't even seen the. The results of the other game. This kind of depends on the. The Western Conference game, which was won by Minnesota. So the Timberwolves ended that series. So let's see here. Did the NBA announce anything yet? No, I don't see any announcements. So as of right now, no announcement on the time for game seven. I expect it to be maybe in the afternoon, but we'll see what time it is. But whatever it is, okay. Oh, no, wait. Here it is. Boom. Done. 7:30pm Game seven on Saturday night. 7:30pm on NBC. Peacock. That's where the season comes down to. Breaking news. 7:30pm Start. I don't know how it's gonna go Be honest with you, I don't know how it's gonna go. I don't know what Celtics to expect. I don't know what they're gonna. If they're gonna rely on these habits. If there's a silver lining here, I'm gonna end it with this. That fourth quarter with the bench guys playing the way they did, being as successful as they were, like, that's the blueprint. And hopefully that. That was a hammer over the heads of. Of the. The starters, Tatum and Brown, especially to say, oh, that's right. All you have to do is make this Sixers defense make some decisions and move and be like, are we switching? Are we not switching? And they will inherently screw up. They're not that good a defense. They're not. So maybe. Maybe the silver lining here is you've seen now in that fourth quarter when Joe pulled the starters. You see it. It works. Proof of concept. You're reminded, oh, yeah, that's how we. That's how we did win those other games. Just go do it. Just go do it. Saturday night should be easy. It should be easy. A lot of people, a lot of Sixers fans are going to go back and be like, oh, do you regret saying any of the other stuff? No, I don't, because I'm right about how this should have gone. The Celtics should have won this series already. They should not be doing the stuff that they're doing. They should be running Embiid off the floor. That's why when I said if they have Embiid, gives them no chance. This. This was. Wasn't just me. Sixers people, people here in Philadelphia were like, well, this series is over. Joel is back. So play the way you're supposed to, and all of this stuff will actually make sense. Just play the way you're supposed to. Do the things that are proven to work. I will be there Saturday night, Saturday night in Boston working at a Game seven. Game Covered: Celtics lose Game 6 to the Sixers, forcing a Game 7
This episode dives into Boston’s Game 6 loss to Philadelphia, which forces a Game 7. Host John Karalis focuses sharply on the familiar failures of the Celtics’ star tandem, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, who fell into stagnant, iso-heavy offensive habits. Karalis provides a passionate breakdown of why the offense failed, what needs to change, and how the Celtics’ bench showed a glimmer of hope—if only the starters would take notice.

On What Needs to Change:
In his signature frustrated-yet-candid style, Karalis makes clear that Boston’s loss wasn’t simply about missing shots—it was a reversion to selfish, slow, isolation offense at critical moments. The bench showed the way, but it’s up to Tatum, Brown, and Missoula to heed the lesson for Game 7. The host remains passionate (“Just go do it…Saturday night should be easy”), but also alarmed by the possibility that, once again, the Celtics’ biggest enemy might be themselves.
