Boston Celtics fall to the San Antonio Spurs in a dramatic showdown marked by Jaylen Brown's ejection and Victor Wembanyama's red-hot shooting. With Jayson Tatum on a strict minutes restriction, the Celtics' chances slipped away as Brown, having a near-MVP level performance, was tossed after a heated exchange with the referees. Did a controversial officiating decision derail Boston's momentum at a key playoff seeding juncture? John Karalis of Celtics On SI breaks down Derrick White’s impressive playmaking, evaluates the Celtics' defensive game plan against Wembanyama, and analyzes how missing key bench players like Payton Pritchard impacted Boston’s offense. Key topics include the ripple effects of Tatum’s limited workload, the supporting cast’s up-and-down night, and strategic takeaways for both an NBA Finals rematch and future matchups versus the Spurs. Don’t miss this action-packed analysis of the Celtics’ latest test and what it means for their postseason outlook.

now on the Locked On Celtics podcast, Victor Wembanyama got too hot from three Jaylen Brown got too hot with the refs and the Celtics lose in San Antonio. Locked on Celtics pot. Home of the winners, baby. Hey, welcome back to the Lockdown Celtics podcast right here on the Lockdown Podcast network. Where does your team every day your team is the Boston Celtics and I talk about them Monday through Friday. I got bonus podcasts on weekends when they play. Plus like on Tuesday a bonus podcast with me and Tom Westerholm. Podcasts can drop whenever, so it's not just five podcasts a week. You're probably going to get seven, eight, nine. So much Celtics talk here, so make sure you're subscribed. Watch the show on YouTube. Get into the comment section there. Share your thoughts with me. John Corrales, beat writer covering the Celtics for Sports illustrated Celtics on SI I've been covering the team for 20 years doing this podcast for 10. Today we're talking about a tough loss in San Antonio 125 to 116. Later on we'll talk about Derrick White. We'll get into Victor Wembanyama getting hot. We just got to start at the top though with I think two major parts of this connected the Jason Tatum minutes restriction. He and he looked, you know, pretty decent in this game at least offensively. Again, the efficiency is still not there, but 24 points, five rebounds, twistes, two steals for Jason Tatum. But the big story is Jalen Brown, who was having a. An incredible game, an amazing game. I, if you didn't see my short that I did at halftime, this was the kind of game where Jalen Brown, when. If you're going to be making the case for Jalen, if we're doing like Supreme Court briefs, if we're doing something where you have to say, okay, here's, here's the game that I will show you, to present to you my argument for Jalen Brown being mvp. You would have shown him that. You would have shown this game because this, this was that kind of performance. Total control. The, the anticipation, the, the, the passing, setting up his teammates, the really, really tough buckets, the, the defense, everything. That one play in the second quarter where he had the ball in the corner, this was set up perfectly for a bad Jaylen Brown turnover or a forced shot or whatever. He gets the ball in the corner, he gets doubled, he gives the ball up, he gets the ball back. He anticipates the double from Victor Wembanyama, attacks Wembanyama right away, and then splits the double team and gets over to Sam Houser for three. Might have been the single most poised basketball play I have seen Jaylen Brown make. Just from beginning to end, knowing when to give the ball up, getting it back, making the right play out of that was perfect. That's why I'm. I was sitting there saying things like, it was a generational game for Jalen Brown. Like, for him, this may have gone down if it had continued the way it was going. It may have gone down as one of the best games that Jalen Brown would have ever played. That's how good he was playing in this game. And so three and a half minutes to go, he gets bumped on the sideline and he falls out of bounds. Some debate, did he flop? Did he were like accentuate that it happens. And it's one of those where he was kind of off balance. You get the bump, you fall out of bounds, and the referee is forced to make the call, to say, okay, you know what the contact did move him before. It's. It's the equivalent of a player getting bumped, putting the shot up and waiting to see if the shot goes in before you call the foul. He got bumped. You wait to see if he goes out of bounds. He does. You call a foul, you give him the ball, and that's it. But they didn't. Okay, fine, he gets upset, he gets a tech this is where I have my. My problem. He gets the tech. Fine. And I was watching some of the post game coverage. This is where it gets murky. Right? He. He earned that first tech. The second tech comes from the umpire. And the umpire was Soyash Mehta, who I've never. I've never really noticed before. Tyler Ford is the crew chief. Maida is the umpire. So that's the lowest rung. Crew chief is the highest rung. Lowest rung has fewer responsibilities. The crew chief is now in direct conflict with Jalen Brown. Jalen is going at Tyler Ford. Tyler Ford is going back at Jalen Brown. And Ford was the one that was letting Jalen talk after the game. Pool report. I'll read it to you. First question, Jay, what did Jalen Brown do to receive the first technical foul? Ford's answer for aggressively pointing and using profanity and resentment to the no call. Follow up question. What did Brown do to receive the second technical foul? Ford, he aggressively approached a game official while pointing and using profanity. Okay, question. Why was no foul called on the play before the first technical foul? Ford, in live play, we did not observe any illegal contact. Fine. So nothing really from the pool report other than they said he, Jaylen Brown, aggressively approached the game official while pointing and using profanity. Okay. You can say that about so many players in so many situations. And one of the reasons why Jaylen probably felt like he could is, I got my first tech. Now they're going to let me say my piece and I'm going to go back to playing the game, because that's what happens. It happens. The Draymond Green Corollary. You get your first tech, then you get to burn out. And ref say, we're not going to throw this guy out for the rest of this little interaction. We're going to look at him, we're going to say, enough is enough. I get it. You've made your point. Move on. And I know that in that moment, everybody's like, please, Jalen, stop, because you don't want him to get that second technical foul. But we also understand that I'm looking at Tyler Ford. I'm looking at the. The. The crew chief say to Jalen, like, enough. Okay, we get it. When the umpire comes in from the side and throws him out, throws him out of the game, that. That's where everybody has the problem. That's not your call to make. That's not. The crew chief is there. He's got it, he's handling it. And then Joe missoula after the game was so great, where he's like, they asked him about and he said, you know, I gotta give my high school principal credit. He had the balls to throw out a student. He didn't leave it up to the hall monitor. So a shot at Tyler Ford for leaving it up to the hall monitor. The umpire shot at the umpire by calling him the hall monitor. Just classic. Classic Joe Missoula there. So that's where I have the problem, too. If Tyler Ford had thrown Jalen Brown out, we could still have an argument, but at least it's the guy that he's talking to. And you can make the argument that Jalen took it too far. And. Yes. Should Jalen have known that he was getting close? Yes. But I do think that he probably feels like he had a little bit of leeway and the guy he was talking to wasn't threatening to throw him out. It's the guy who came in from the side that did it. I would not be surprised if Tyler Ford went to the other official and said, look, I got this, and they're going to circle the wagons and all of that. So. So that's my piece on the Jaylen Brown thing. I just don't agree with how it all went down. Now. Jaylen Brown getting thrown out hurts. We don't know what would have happened at that point. Jalen is so hot that maybe he would have thrown him off his game and he would have been terrible the rest of the way. We don't know because he wasn't around. So that hurts. The Celtics. The Celtics had a. I think, first of all, he was doing all of the creation. He was doing all of the assisting at that point. He. He was really in total control. He played 14, not even 15 minutes and had seven assists in this game. Derrick White played 40 minutes and had seven assists. Jaylen was completely on point here. The Celtics had a great defensive plan on Victor Wembanyama. They were physical. They were moving him out of. Out of position. They were getting him off his spots. Jaylen was part of that. Now, normally you'd say, well, okay, you got Jason Tatum. Now he's back. You just lean on him. One of the critical points of this game is Tatum scores. I think seven straight points. The beginning of the fourth quarter, it looked like the spurs were putting this thing away. Wemby was hot. It just looked like the Celtics were kind of done. Then Tatum gets going. The Celtics have to take him out of the game because he's got a minutes restriction. And once again, he played 26, 46. So 27 has to be his max. It's a kind of a. A tough choice there for Joe, which after the game, he said it wasn't, but it was you. You know, you've got 27 minutes to do. You leave him in because he's hot and you say, okay, just see if he can keep building and maybe you can overtake the lead and you finish with somebody else. Or you do what Joe did, you take him out a couple minutes, you put him back in with five or so minutes to go. At that point, he played 21. So five and change to go gets him to the 26, 46, and the hope that he can get, continue to stay hot and maybe carry you to the win. The minutes restriction really hurts the Celtics in just the matter of the win loss. Now, I'm not saying anything other than it is what it is. You're not going to break the minutes restrictions. I'd rather lose the game than lose Tatum for anything or cause any sort of stress to his body beyond what he's currently medically capable of handling. So. But fact is, it hurts. It hurts to have him out and, you know, in that. In that spot. So to lose Jalen and then to not have full Jason Tatum to take over after that just kind of. Kind of sucks in that situation. Now wembanyama ends up getting hot from three. It's one of those kind of tip your cap moments. We'll get into that part of the game when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by Indeed. It's the five hour Energy flavor draft and I have my my choices. Now, I'm not a big sweet tooth person, but five hour Energy does have a ton of flavors that give you that, that sweet tooth kind of satisfaction. Confetti craze, fruity rainbow cotton candy without the actual sugar. That's the best part of it. You want energy, not sugar in a sugar crash. So for my number one pick, I'm looking at things like cherry, right? Bright, punchy taste, smooth and easy. Clean, slightly tangy finish. Really Right. It's that candy style cherry flavor. There's berry, big, bold berry, sweet and very fruity. That classic hint of raspberry and BlackBerry. But my number one is always grape. I keep going back to it that that classic conquered grape flavor. It's like that grape juice or that grape candy that you love. It's almost like a syrup like fruit profile, classic purple candy style finish. Number one thing though, it's about the energy that you're getting with five hour energy shots that give you a boost with zero sugar. So check yours out. Hope you're checking out the Lockdown NBA podcast. Locked on NBA game night. Game night's got all the games covered seven nights a week. Game night's got all the big stories. In the afternoons. They're both in the same feed. Wherever you found this podcast on the court after everything I just said, the I thought the Celtics were doing a great job of wima. I thought they were. They were knocking him off his spots. Like I said before, the three pointers, letting him step into a couple wasn't great. It kind of let him get going. But he's a 35% three point shooter. He's Somebody that you're going to live with taking some of those threes, and it's. It was okay. It. Sometimes somebody like Wemby who loves to take the three and who can fall in love with it, that's something that you want to encourage. You think about some of the matchups that they threw out there. He. He spent a lot of time on Sam Houser, even on those switches. He didn't go inside to punish it. He didn't look for. For a ton of lobs. He was. He was kind of hanging around the perimeter. I think the Celtics had him in the right spot, and he just went 8 of 15. There's a certain part of this that was just, hey, tip your cap with. If Wemby shoots 8 of 15 from 3, you live with that result. I thought the Celtics did a good job. This was not an Amishkeda game. He played 19 minutes, was, you know, five points, four rebounds. This is not an Amishked a game here. This is where not having. There are a couple of things that hurt. Not having Pritchard, who was out with a neck. Neck spasm that hurt because you didn't have another ball handler to help break the break. The spurs down. It hurt. Not having Nicola Vuchovic because it. This is just a matchup where keeping Keda on the floor with Wemby kept somebody around the rim. And it just took. It took Wemby. You know, it put Wemby in a position where he could be a real defensive menace. When you took Keda off the floor, it forced Wemby further out into the perimeter. The Celtics made a huge run actually attacking Wembanyama. They. Tatum attacked him. Derrick White attacked him with a lot of success. And because they put him out in the perimeter and forced him to move. Move laterally, move back and forth. And even though he is just a ridiculously proportioned person. Person, quote, unquote, he's actually. Everybody talk. He talk about how he's not even really human the way he's The. The way he's built, but he's a. A ridiculously proportioned person who can get out and challenge you. But when you get him moving in one direction, anybody that size just has a tough time switching directions. You can. You can read the, hey, he's moving this way. I get to get my shot off here. Derek took advantage of that. Jason took advantage of that. The up fakes and drives were really, really working well. So I thought they actually did a decent job attacking Wimbanyama, giving him, getting him into the shots that they wanted him to take. He had some bad turnovers. He was kind of like, nonchalant with the ball. It was really set up for the Celtics to kind of. I think. I think I'll put it this way. The. The Celtics are, I think, one of the teams that despite WEMBY Having almost 40, I think that you can make a case that Wemby is defended better by the Celtics than by most teams. And I know people are going to look at that and say, hold on, John, 39 points on 11 of 20 shooting. He went to the line 12 times. He had 39 and 11 and three assists. But he had six turnovers and was an aberrational shooting night for him. Eight of 15 from three, like I said. So on a normal shooting night, he's. First of all, he's not taking 15 threes, but even if you force him into the 15 threes, he's making five. You know what I mean? And that three, the extra three is. Is nine points. And the Celtics lost the game by nine points. So you now put yourself in a different. In a different position. This game becomes much closer. So I just think the Celtics did a decent job on. On Wemby. It just. He made shots and they attacked him. They kind of took away his superpower by taking Keda off the floor and using a lot more Garza and going with small ball lineups. I just think that was very effective. And. And should the Celtics end up meeting the spurs down the road, that's something that you can lean on and maybe even be a blueprint for other teams. And again, this is not a criticism of Keita. It's just a bad matchup. Like Kate is just. He's answered all my questions all year long. It's fine. Sometimes you just have a bad matchup, and that's what it is. And that's why the Celtics have the bigs that they have. Having Vuchovic in this game might have helped them a lot, and it may have. May have had them play Keda even less. Derek White was spectacular in so many ways. The supporting cast had its ups and downs. We'll wrap up the show by talking about that part of the game when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by Game time. So check that out. Okay, so Derrick White got going mostly because he got early catch and shoot opportunities that that gets him into the flow. And 11 of 22 overall, 3 of 11 from 3 still still working on that part. But 34 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds overall, really good game for D. White. The the Jason Tatum when Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown are on the floor together with Derrick White, it's just so much open space catching shoots. I've talked about that yesterday on the podcast. I've written about it on SI.com you you're just going to see Derek ease into these games a little bit more quickly. The catch and shoot chances at the beginning get you going and then that's when the pull up stuff you're feeling good about yourself. That's when the pull up stuff starts to really show. But the Celtics didn't get like they had. They have opportunities here and there, right? They, they, they got some decent minutes from Sam Houser but in the second half it, it just you didn't get everything you needed from these guys. Part what you get from the Celtics when we see success from them is Nimish Kate is playing great and, and being a defensive kind of menace and you just didn't have that from him tonight. Hauser was, was good. We didn't obviously Jalen didn't play enough. Baylor Charman again had his moments. Garza had his moments. Gonzalez had a couple. But you just aside from Ron Harper Jr. Who scored a career high 22 points and was just blistering hot from 36 of 9 for him. Maybe it's because he was playing against his little brother and his mom was in the building. If that's the case, I would pay for if I'm Brad Stevens, I'm paying for mom to be in the building. I'll personally buy you tickets to be at every game. So Ron Harper Jr. Could average 20 points a game. But Ron Seriously was the only consistent bench threat or supporting cast threat throughout. Throughout the game. The second half, The Celtics got 21 points from Derrick White, they got 14 from Jason Tatum, and they got 14 from Ron Harper Jr. That's it for the second half. 58 points. Those three guys, what's that? 20, 30, 48, 49 out of the 58 points. Two for Sam Houser in the second half, three from Nimish Kaeda, all on free throws. Three from Baylor Shireman on the one three that he hit, one from Jordan Walsh. That's. And it's still 58 points and a half. And the bigger issue is that they gave up 67 points because Wembanyama in the spurs in general got hot from 3:12 to 24 from 3. But the Celtics just, the supporting cast didn't. Didn't give them enough to kind of keep up with that kind of shooting. They had their chances for sure, and the Celtics were right there. The spurs hit 23, Pointers, 20 of 47. The Celtics were 19 of 51. It was really close. The free throws, which Wemby is always going to get hurt, but they just. The Celtics just didn't get enough from everyone else to fully make up for the loss of Jalen Brown in the second quarter. So it's tough against a defensive team like the spurs. Again, having Pritchard to just break down the defense, to, to be another creator, especially with Jalen gone in the second quarter. That would have changed if you just had Peyton and Vuch. That just could have, that could have. Who knows? It would have changed the dynamic in the second quarter. And now that gives the Celtics a little bit of something to lean on because they could sit there and say, hey, Tatum on a minutes restriction, Jalen gets booted, you're missing two key players off the bench. And you still had a chance in the fourth quarter with an incredible game plan and incredible execution for most of this game. You still had a chance to beat the spurs and you still. It was. You can still point to Wembanyama having an aberration of a game to being the reason why you lost. So a lot of positives in this and it sucks that a really good like back and forth battle. This. The Celtics and Spurs have had two real battles. It sucks that there's controversy to kind of overshadow that because this. I'm not, I'm not going to say this is going to be the NBA Finals, but it has the, it does have the potential to be the NBA Finals. Two seed in the east and the third seed, I believe in the west or second seed in the West. I don't forget what the standings are at this point, but I'm going to look at it real quick. Spurs are yeah this yeah there's the second seed in the West. They're you're looking at two potential NBA NBA Finals participants here. This I think it would be a great series. I think the Celtics have shown it would be a great series and that's before Tatum got back. They had a great game then. I think Joe Missoula has the formula to limits womenyama enough right not stop women Yama limit him enough to give the Celtics a chance and that's all you want. All right, well we'll dig back into this tape. Jalen I didn't see any comments from Jalen after the game. I think Celtics PR might have done him a favor and saved him $35,000 by preventing he already tweeted right away like he was tweeting during the game. I don't know if that applies is some rule for that in the NBA. I don't know but he was already tweeting and the rest of the guys said enough. Derrick White swore during a during the post game. I've never heard Derrick White swear in post game at all ever. And he called it BS and so yeah, Derek, Jason, Joe all standing up for Jalen. That's enough for Jalen right now. I'm sure he's gonna let him cool off, let him calm down. They'll get pregame comments from him or some point shoot around comments from him in okc. I'm sure he's still gonna have plenty to say. He might still cost himself some money at that point but we'll wait and see on that. Tough loss, but what are you gonna do? Spurs are a good team and hopefully the Celtics. The Pistons won. So that's, that's. I think, I think they're in with this loss. ESPN thing cutting through there. Sorry the Spurs. I mean I'm sorry the, the Pistons win. With the Celtics loss here I think. I think we're going to see Pistons 1, Celtics 2. Nick's probably 3. I think that's how it's going to end up. So anyway I'll wrap up the show there. Thanks for listening everybody.
