now on the Locked On Celtics podcast, Jaylen Brown Good numbers, bad game, rough loss in Atlanta. Locked on Celtics pot Home of the winners, baby. Yeah. Welcome back to the show. I am John Corrales. Rough one in Atlanta, Celtics lose. Later on, we're going to get to some fun stuff. Jason Tatum won a Player of the Week award. Joe Missoula had a funny reaction to potential Coach of the Year award. We'll save that for last so we can end the show with a smile. In the second segment, we'll get into some of the supporting cast stuff. A lot of good performances, interesting, fun performances in what was really kind of a stinker of a game. But we got to start on this loss to Atlanta. 112, 102 with Jaylen Brown, who after the game stepped up, took responsibility, said, this is one of my worst performances in a while, and said that multiple times. And I think everybody kind of agrees. Jaylen Brown did not play really well in this game. Now the numbers, the raw numbers, you look at it and you say, wow, 29 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists. That's pretty good. 9 of 29 shooting, 8 of 14 from the line, six turnovers overall. A really just bad night until midway through the fourth quarter. Maybe a little bit before that, where he got going, finally got some shots to fall, finally got a couple of threes to fall, got to the line a little bit. But overall, Jalen, just like I said, he admitted it. He, no, there's no way you can look at the game that he had. If I didn't, if you didn't know what the stats were, you, everybody would say this was a bad game for Jalen Brown. And it happens. You have bad games sometimes when you're a player of Jalen Brown's caliber. Every great player has bad games. It's impossible to be great in every single one of them or all season long. So whatever. Like, it's not a criticism, but it is of this particular game. I think you could see it right away from the beginning. He I, I've seen enough of Jaylen Brown to kind of recognize right away that he, he wasn't playing his, the game that we're used to seeing him play this season. I, I, I think this season has been his best at reading, reacting, understanding the game, using Joe Missoula isms right now, giving the game what it needs. Jalen's been pretty great at that, I think, all season long, which is why he's in the all NBA conversation, why he's in the MVP discussion. In this game, though, I feel like early on his first few possessions, I said that that's, that's the Jalen Brown that's hyper focused on one thing. That's the Jalen that is super focused on scoring. And even though he had was it six assists in the first half, three assists in the first quarter, I don't think he was moving the ball the right way. He was making some passes that led to some shots, sure. But what I mean is I don't think Jalen was making the quick decisions based on what the defense was showing. I think he was, I think he was. I'm not in his head, so this is just a guess. It feels like no Jason Tatum known to Mishkeda, obviously no Nikola Vuchovic. Yet shorthanded Jalen came out was like, I'm going to carry this team. Kind of like, you know, and coming off of hey, Jason did it last night, I'm going to do it tonight type of thing. It, it just felt like when you come out super focused to do one thing, you miss out on the other things you're supposed to be doing. And this, this isn't Just a Jalen thing. The Celtics, I think, have gotten themselves into trouble like this a lot over the years, and you didn't see. You haven't seen it this. This season very much. But I think a prime example is game two of the series against the Knicks last year. Game one, they just missed a ton of threes at the end of game one. They collapsed in the fourth quarter. They took, I don't know, was it 63 pointers? And people came out of that game going, wow, you shot a lot of three pointers. And they were. They came out of it even admitting in that game, hey, yeah, we did shoot a lot of three pointers. Game two, fourth quarter, it's like they forced two pointers. And I was like, you know, you're giving up a lot of open three pointers. You can still take those. And I think that cost them in that game. This is the same. That's in that same family, right? It's the same. It's the same strain of flu that got them sick then that Jaylen Brown sick. I think in this one, whenever the Celtics come out, any one of the Celtics, whenever one of them comes out and says, I am focused on this. For Jalen, I believe that it was. I'm focused on scoring tonight. It could easily, just as easily be. I'm focused on passing tonight. I'm focused on this particular aspect instead of what Celtics basketball really is, which is we're going to make a play, we're going to start a play, whether it's a set action, whether it's just transition, whatever it is, an isolation. However the Celtics initiate the offense, they're at their best when they look at what the defense is doing and then they play off of that. That's Celtics basketball. Joe has said this multiple times. It's not memorization. You go, here you go, here you go. There. There are plays where it starts, you know, whatever. Horn set. Two guys at, you know, one guy, one elbow, one guy at the other elbow, pin downs, stagger, screens, all these. All these different ways to get the whole thing started. And it's based on Jos's. Okay, they're switching. We're going to do this. Oh, they're in drop. We're going to do this. We have our ways to attack these. And then depending on what the. The. The opponent does. Now it's up to the players, right? Joe starts it, the players finish it. That's. That's all Celtics basketball is. So whenever somebody like Jalen says, hey, I'm. I'm scoring, I'M I'm carrying this offense. I'm coming in, I'm dropping. It's my day to drop 30. I'm not saying he actually is. Oh, jay Jason dropped 30, I gotta drop 30. That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is Jason's out. Jason stepped up when I was out. I gotta step up when he's out. And you don't give the game what it needs. What. What the defense is, is determining and what the defense, I feel like determined was. Jaylen should have been getting off the ball quicker, should have been understanding how the defense was, was attacking him and just quick attack, move the ball, relocate and come back and get the ball again and just force whoever was guarding him. Dyson Daniels, whoever. Nikhil, Alexander, Walker, guys who did a great job on him. And let me just be clear, Atlanta Hawks defense was phenomenal. Give the Hawks absolute full marks. They were great in this game, but Jalen should have been like, hey, you know what? They're hyper focused on me. I'm going to get off this ball. I'm going to use my gravity to draw to get off the ball. Swing, swing, swing, get it back, get it on the move and attack and see if you can find a gap as the Hawks try to, you know, maybe make a mistake or, you know, if the Hawks are kind of, you lose Jalen, you get, you know, that moment of, oh, oh, my God, we just lost Jaylen Brown. And the more decisions they have to make, the more openings you find that would have gotten Derrick White going. As I get into the supporting cast in the next. The next segment, Derrick White's numbers were not good enough. Peyton Pritchard's numbers were okay, but overall impact was not good enough. Luca Garza obviously was great, but other guys weren't good enough. And I think in an early recognition of, hey, I'm going to make this read, I'm going to react properly and just get off the ball and not worry so much about carrying the offense right now. I'm going to get everybody involved because that's the defense dictates. Think that would have just gotten things going and it would have stopped a lot of the Turnovers. Celtics had 15 turnovers in the. In the game. They had 10 in the first half, seven in the first quarter. So 11 points off turnovers at halftime. That was a big reason why the Celtics went into halftime tied. They fell apart in the third quarter, but if they had. I think if Jalen had set a better tone in the first quarter, he could have still gotten to 29, 10 and nine. But instead of six turnovers, it would have been two and he would have been a plus something. And Derrick White would have had 16 points. You know, I'm saying, like, that's, that's what I'm. I'm looking for from Jalen. And it's. I think maybe being in Atlanta, maybe whatever, you know, however, however it got to that point. I've seen this movie before with Jalen and just a little too hyper focused on one thing. And this time I think it really was scoring. And yes, he got some assists, which is nice, but I think he could have gotten a lot more. I don't think he passed the ball nearly well enough. And that was the beginning of all of it tumbling down. So credit the Hawks defense. That was great. The supporting casts were the. The other story of this game where the Celtics got a little bit but nowhere near enough and the Hawks got incredible. In fact, maybe the most unlikely. Think I'll say it this way. For a while there, the Celtics and the Hawks were playing the least believable NBA basketball I've ever seen. We'll get to all of that when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by five hour Energy. Let's do it. Let's do the flavor draft. We've been doing it all month long. We're going to do it again. And look, they've got a bunch of flavors. I did mine yesterday. I'm going to do. I'm going to channel my wife, right? This is my wife's flavor draft. She's very different tastes than I do when it comes to this stuff. She's got the sweet tooth. So we're going sweet in the flavor draft. Look, they've got these new options. Confetti craze, fruity rainbow, cotton candy. There's something for everyone, right? I went grape and cherry and that. Like the fruity flavors. We are going to go with the sweet tooth. But here's the best part about this. There's no sugar here. So you get the five hour energy shot boost. You get the caffeine that you're looking for zero sugar. So even though these may sound sweet, it's just something that satisfies your sweet tooth. It's not over the top. It's not sugary. It's just that perfect bit of sweetness. I know what my wife's going to like. The confetti craze. It's like a rich, buttery, freshly baked confetti cake, right? Smooth vanilla frosting, a sprinkle of sweetness. It's like a birthday cake. Inspired flavor, that dessert, like taste profile. It's rich, it's indulgent, but it's not going to make you pucker up like, oh my God, this is sweet. It's, it's just sweet. Tastes like you're sipping on some cake. But no sugar. Like I said, just so that means no crash. It's just that bit of caffeine. No guilt, just the boost. So that's. I know when I go grape, my wife's gonna be like, thank you for not picking my top one confetti craze. And so that's. Which one are you? Are you going grape or cherry or are you gonna go sweet? Whichever one you want. It's at five hour energy.com or on Amazon. Five hour energy.com or on Amazon. Today's show also brought to you by indeed. You're hiring. You got a job to fill. So subscribe wherever your podcast I'm John Corrales. I have been covering the Celtics for about 20 years, doing it now for Celtics on SI and I've been doing this podcast for 10. So got a lot, a lot of history with the Celtics. So I've seen a lot and I've seen the Celtics play this kind of game before. I know that you need the supporting cast to step up and shout out to Luca Garza for 20 points, nine rebounds, eight of nine shooting. 20 points on nine shots is incredible. Where Jalen 29 points on 29 shots. Luca was the only one I think that that had a just a legitimately good offensive night. Everyone else, they needed more from Derrick White. But like I said, I think Jalen playing the way he did kind of had this trickle down effect. Derek just never looked like he got into any sort of flow. He looked disjointed, he looked like he was. He was just hunting his shots. He wasn't getting them in the flow of any sort of offense. And this is kind of like the, the worst case scenario for Derek. Lots of long athletic defenders, he had to work extraordinarily hard for a lot of pull up shots. He wasn't getting the catch and shoot type of stuff that gets him going. I don't have the stats on this, but I'm willing to bet that if you get Derek White a couple of catch and shoot shots early in the in the game that the pull ups start falling more later. Just something I feel like I've seen. So that's not something that happened for, for D. White. He did other things. He blocked a couple of shots, had a steal, five rebounds, four assists. But this is just, I didn't feel like I didn't feel Derrick White in this game at all. Normally when D. White is playing his best, you feel it, right? You feel those stretches like man, D. White is having an injury impact. Payton Pritchard had a couple of those moments, but 16 points, 6 of 14 shooting, 4 of 6 from 3. Yeah, but he was a minus 19. Tough one for him in this one. And then like just that again, that trickle down effect. Baylor Shireman got the start. He was. I'm laughing if you watch the game. You know why I'm laughing? Because he fired this one. One wild corner three. That Joe was immediately like get him out of here. And he didn't start the second half. He still ended up playing in the second half, but I think that shot really bothered Joe. That was a bad decision. And then listen, Baylor is prone to fits of overconfidence when, when he's playing his best, he's just taking the right shot, making the right play, kind of playing within himself every once in a while, whether he feels like he has to or he just is super, super confident. And listen, Baylor is one of the more confident players you're going to meet. That shot was audacious and wrong. He only had three points. You need, you need more from him. Jordan Walsh started, did okay, had, you know, typical Jordan Walsh, right hustle, plays good defense, hit a couple of shots, but you know, you just. In a, in a game that was missing, Nene, that was missing, obviously, Jason, you needed just a little bit more from everybody. Ugo Gonzalez, I think, is having a, a rough kind of finish to the season. I, I would not be surprised if Ugo ends up being one of the guys that falls out of the rotation in the playoffs. I know Jordan's been the guy that's been getting DNPs, but Ugo's been a negative. Hugo started the season as a massive, massive positive. I think he's running out of gas. I don't think he's. He's prepared. He's a rookie, right? I don't think he was ready for all of the stuff that, that goes into an NBA season. As much as he's had pro experience, this is just a different thing. I think he's running out of gas. So I don't know how the playoff rotation is going to look. I would not be shocked. Even though Ugo has been getting all the regular season minutes and Jordan's only just getting some now. Would not be shocked if Jordan steps into the playoff rotation and Ugo kind of sits because the playoffs and rookies in the playoffs are just tough. So I, I feel like we might be winding down on Ugo. I'm still super high on him. I'm not backing off on anything, but I think, I think this is, this is good for him to go through. It's going to be motivating for him. Get a shout out. Look, Amari Williams had some good moments, also some bad moments. Like he had a couple of really bad defensive moments, including one that was him and Ugo that led to a timeout that got them both chewed out. It was a really bad play. Ugo had a bad switch, left the guy in the paint with nobody behind him. That was dumb. Amari was sitting there Kind of flat footed and lazy. His arms down by the side, pass went right by him for an easy dunk. Like that was a bad, bad, bad defensive play. Both those guys got burned. But Amari did have a, you know, a good stretch. He had, I, I believe a one play was a block, came down, had a tip in on the other end. And then I'll end this part of this, the show with Charles Bassey, who amazingly I, I swear if somebody just thumped me over the head cartoon style and, and, and knocked me out and I just woke up from summer league and I was like, oh, they actually signed Bassie. And look, I told you he'd be good. The, the path from summer league to here is a wild one. And Bassie will be done in a few days and probably gone. I don't know if he'll get an invite next year or not. What? But man, he had that one stretch where he blocked two shots and it was really like came down and made a bucket and it was for two minutes. Charles Bassey was like fulfilling every summer league dream that I'd had. So shout out to him for doing that. All right, so I think we're done. We're done with the Atlanta Hawks game, right? It was a stinker. There's no need to dive any further into this. They lost. Not a big deal. There's still two games up on the New York Knicks with seven games to play. That is a difficult, not impossible, but a difficult gap to make up that one game they play each other. If the Celtics win that, then it's basically a wrap. So I think not the worst thing in the world. You're going to lose some of these games. Go in, in Miami and just wipe this away. When we come back, Jason Tatum won an award. Joe Missoula doesn't want an award. We'll talk about those when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by TurboTax. If you watched my short on YouTube then you already know what I'm about to say. But many of you don't because you don't want to watch YouTube shorts. I'm gonna kind of say what I said yesterday in the podcast. This is amazing. I cannot believe that Jason Tatum is already good enough to be winning a Player of the Week award. That is insane to come back from 10 months to come back from an Achilles injury surgery, to repair the injury 10 months later and be good enough to win a Player of the Week award in the same month that you return. Just need everybody to understand that that is not supposed to happen. That is not how this is supposed to go. It is amazing that it has gone that way. I could I count myself among the Tatum optimists. I knew that he was going to be back in 10 months. I knew that he was going to be back in March. I just knew that the way everything played out, it just made sense. But it also made sense for him to be playing in 15 minute stints at the beginning of his recovery to maybe not even look as good as he's looked. So once again, just incredible. Incredible that he's good enough to win that. In that not only is he good enough to win that, but that the numbers that he's put up are frustrating. Kind of like, you know, Jalen, in this game that you can sit there and say, oh, this was one of my worst games of the season, and you still end up with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists. Like, I. That is not lost on me that you. You still find a way to suck for a lot of the game and come out of it at 29, 10, and 9. That's. You have to be so incredibly good to do that. Jason Tatum has to be so incredibly good to be frustrated by how his season is going. Just before the Charlotte game, that last game before that he was talking about, yeah, it's frustrating and I just can't, like, snap my fingers and be Jayson Tatum again and then the next game go out and dominate and then win player of the week. You have to be so incredibly good to be frustrated by your performances and be better than everyone else in the conference that week. That's how good you have to be. And I'll probably save this for a bonus podcast because I wrote about it on. On si, but so many other things happened that I think it might have gotten lost. We got to start referring to these guys in terms of legendary status in this. In. In Celtics history. They're already top 10 scorers. They're. These guys are. Are beyond superstars. The. I think we have to admit that. Yeah. On a night where Jalen was admittedly terrible and, you know, for most of the game and all of that, he. He says it, we all say it, and he still is this good. I mean, come on. That Jason is as good as he is. Come on. But I'll save that. That's a whole other discussion. And I'll have it. I want to wrap it up by just highlighting. And you got to Google it. Joe Missoula was asked about Coach of the Year before the Hawks game, and he basically said, that's a stupid award. I don't want to talk about it. Don't ever ask. Don't ever ask me about it again. Which of course makes me want to ask about it again, because, yeah, you know, just whatever. Bust. Let's bust Joe a little bit. Let's just have some fun with the question. But he. He just does not. Does not want that kind of attention he does not. I'll. I'll put it this way. Joe Missoula will do and say anything he needs to do and say to make sure the players in the locker room do not think he's putting himself above them. Not only above them, but at their level. Joe Missoula. And you go back and listen to everything he said, everything that he's hinted at. He will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever say anything that remotely hints that he is as important as the players. That's it. Whenever he gets praised, he deflects. It's either the staff, it's the entire staff. It's. It's never just him. It's the entire staff. It's the players first. It's. It's. They're the ones who go out there and execute. They're the most important thing. And he's right. He is right. It's in the NBA. It's. It's always the players. Right? And I. I get on this. When people criticize Joe for a lot of things, I'll. I'm the first person to say the players have to go out there and execute. Just like this isn't a failure of Joe's coaching. Jalen had to go out there and make the reads. Now, could Joe have done coaching things to adjust? Maybe. But also, maybe not. Joe will always put the players first. Always. And if there is anything that prevents him from doing that, step two is it's the staff. It's everybody. It's not him. It's a team award. It's a. It's a staff award. And even that, that is also correct. This is. This is an exceptional situation. Joe Missoula is an elite coach. I don't care what he says. I'll say he is an elite head coach, one of, if not the best in the league. And there's just no disputing that anymore. Which is funny because it's not too long ago that people were all fire Joe. And now it's pretty well accepted that he's one of the best coaches in the league, but he also has one of the best staffs in the league. They are all. They're all on the same page. Joe creates a culture that is just impeccable. One of my favorite things, I've said this before, one of my favorite things about Joe is this concept of when the player walks into the practice facility, he's going to see maybe five other people before he sees any of the coaches. And if any one of those other people aren't on the same page, Then you risk the player not being on the same page. He's going to walk in and see security at the front desk or kitchen staff or maintenance staff. There's going to be. There's going to be trainers, there's going to be therapists. There's any number of people that he is going to see before he. The player, sees a coach or the coaching staff or Joe. And so Joe says every one of these people is just as important, and every one of these people's got to be on the same page. And so Joe makes the effort to put everybody on the same page. Right? Everybody's right there with him. And so that's what makes him a great coach, not just X's and O's. And how do you get the most out of these players? How do you get Luca Garza in there to play like he does? Right? Luca Garza is, you know, he has the drive and the energy and all of that stuff, but he has to feel like it means something. Jordan Walsh has to feel like it means something. Baylor Shireman, Ugo Gonzalez, Amari Williams, Charles Bassey, who just talked about being with the Celtics and was like, this is great. This is the most professional outfit I've seen. That's. That's all important. That's all Joe. It all starts with Joe. And now everybody with him has to be part of it and be a willing, part participant in it. And they are, which makes them all great. And then the players all have to be willing participants and makes them all great. That's how you build a culture. That's how you get to coach of the year. And that's why Joe is who he is. And I don't care what Joe says. And Joe could sit here and deny it. He's. He's just. It's in. It's the last thing I'm going to say. This is what makes him. Another part of what makes him great is he will never put himself in front of the team. The team. Success belongs to the team. And that's end of story for him. So. And, you know, look, he never played in the NBA. These guys are all NBA players. A couple of, like, basically NBA legends, Celtics legends, you know, on this team. And so Joe's like, I'm not. I'm not putting myself ahead of that. Who am I? So. Humility. I. I will shout out. Last thing I'm going to say. I'm going to shout out Sean Grandy, because I'm gonna find this on Twitter real quick, because Grandy had the best quote Here where he said, people grandy to Joe Missoula said, people wonder why you always preach humility. I guess it's because if you don't, the game will find a way to preach it to you. They're talking about the Yukon Duke ending, but, you know, Joe was talking about a lot of things. I'm not going to get into all of that stuff, but I love that line. People wonder why you always preach humility. I guess it's because if you don't, the game will find a way to preach it to you. Joe says, man, you got that right. And, man, did he get that right. And he's 100% right about why Joe does it and that Joe and that Joe does it and all of that. That was perfect. That's a perfect way to. To end this. This quick kind of comment on Joe. Joe should be coach of the year. No doubt about it. He should be coach of the Year. And frankly, if he doesn't get it this year, he may never get it. Be honest with you. Because this is. This is the first year where his team is going to exceed expectations. After this year, the expectations are going to be too high. It's. It's downhill from here for Joe, right? Like, if you don't reach lofty expectations, people are going to be, like, disappointed. And count me among them. I know I said this is the last thing I'm going to say. Probably about four different things I've said ago, but Joe. Joe has set the bar super high. This is the last chance, I think, for him to get a Coach of the year, because from now on, moving forward, everybody's just gonna be like, yeah, of course this team is over. It's not even overachieving. It's just achieving what Joe Missoula is going to bring him. It's kind of like a spo Popovich. It's going to be in that realm. He. He's just get it to him now. Get him his one coach of the year, and then he'll be happy because he'll never get it again, because after that, it's just going to go to coaches who have teams that overachieve, and it's going to be other teams all the time. And it's just going to say, you know, we're going to, you know, 10 years from now, we're going to be like, yeah, Joe Missoula should be coach of the Year every year. But he never gets it because his team is just always as good as people expect. And that's. That's where I'm going to end it. Okay. Thank you for listening. Thank you for watching. In this episode, host John Karalis breaks down the Boston Celtics’ tough 112-102 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, focusing on Jaylen Brown’s uncharacteristically poor performance. Karalis covers key issues behind the defeat, the impact of Brown’s game on the supporting cast, gives credit to Atlanta’s strong defense, and ends with lighter moments about Jason Tatum’s Player of the Week honor and Joe Mazzulla’s reaction to talk of Coach of the Year.
Key Focus:
A deep dive into Jaylen Brown’s rough night and how the Celtics’ offensive missteps, turnovers, and lack of flow with the supporting cast contributed to a disappointing defeat. Context is given around injuries, recent player performance, and the broader implications as the regular season winds down.
[01:35]
Opening Statement:
“Jaylen Brown. Good numbers, bad game, rough loss in Atlanta.”
— John Karalis
Brown’s Line:
29 pts, 10 rebounds, 9 assists
BUT:
Immediate Accountability:
“He stepped up, took responsibility, said this is one of my worst performances in a while.”
— Karalis [01:38]
Analysis:
Karalis argues that while the raw numbers might look impressive, the context and energy of Brown’s play were substantially off:
Team Context:
Injuries meant Boston was shorthanded. Karalis speculates that Brown tried to “carry the team” as Tatum did previously, which backfired.
“If you didn’t know what the stats were, everybody would say this was a bad game for Jaylen Brown.”
— Karalis [03:28]
[09:28]
Philosophy:
Celtics’ offense is best when reading and reacting to the defense rather than forcing specific outcomes.
Turnovers as a Symptom:
Hypothetical:
Karalis muses Brown could’ve had the same impressive numbers with fewer turnovers if he’d set a better tone in Q1:
“He could have still gotten to 29, 10 and 9. But instead of six turnovers, it would have been 2 and he would have been a plus something. And Derrick White would have had 16 points.”
— Karalis [13:30]
[14:36]
“For a while there, the Celtics and the Hawks were playing the least believable NBA basketball I’ve ever seen.”
— Karalis [14:57]
[19:22]
[23:02]
On Jaylen Brown’s mindset:
“This isn’t just a Jaylen thing. The Celtics, I think, have gotten themselves into trouble like this a lot over the years... Prime example was Game 2 of the series against the Knicks last year.”
— Karalis [05:10]
On the supporting cast:
“Luka Garza was the only one I think that had just a legitimately good offensive night. Everyone else, they needed more from Derrick White.”
— Karalis [15:30]
On rookie Ugo Gonzalez:
“I think he’s running out of gas. I don’t think he was ready for all of the stuff that goes into an NBA season.”
— Karalis [18:41]
On Joe Mazzulla as Coach of the Year:
“Joe Mazzulla will do and say anything he needs to make sure the players in the locker room do not think he’s putting himself above them... Success belongs to the team. And that’s end of story for him.”
— Karalis [31:50]
