Play your game the Boston Celtics beat the Cleveland Cavaliers. There was a little bit of a. A little bit of a. You know, the Cavs pushed back for sure, and the Celtics were able to hold them off. They got a little bit of something from everybody. They got something from Baylor Shireman, which was an interesting moment there at halftime with Shaq that I'll get to in a second. They got something from Peyton Pritchard down the stretch. Jaylen Brown was huge. I get to him in a little bit. The second quarter was a really interesting kind of second quarter. That. That's where the game kind of flipped. But let's start where everybody wants to start right now. And it's Jason Tatum, who played okay in 27 minutes. So it seems like 27, 28 minutes is the minutes restriction. No one has officially said anything about a minute's restriction until Jason Tatum after the game, talking to reporters, who said, the toughest thing for me right now is the minutes restriction. I think he probably wants to play 34, 35 minutes, but it's obvious that he needs time to kind of work his way back in now. He played a longer stretch than I expected in the first quarter, played almost nine minutes, and looked good for most of those nine minutes. Right? 12 points, 4 of 6 shooting, 1 of 3 from 3, couple rebounds, and an assist towards the end of it. He had a miss at the right before he subbed out. That was very clearly short, like, it was his. His shot looked a little bit more like he was trying to get it to the rim. It just looked a little bit more, oh, my God, I'm tired. I gotta make up for it somehow, and that all of this is fine. Like, all of it is fine. So he played the nine minutes, and then he took a long rest, and he couldn't quite get his rhythm back. I don't know if that was because he was tired from the nine minutes, if he was out of rhythm after playing nine minutes and sitting for a while, he didn't get it back until the very end, where he got a very important layup, got to the rim, which was good. Nice to see him kind of getting downhill. I did have questions about how often he would drive, but he feels. It looks like he feels comfortable. And then he hit a three. Was a great play, a great play where Pritchard was kind of trapped on the right sideline right about the hash mark. He. He fights to keep possession. He gets a ball over to the mishkeda kata, takes one dribble, reads the defense, kicks it over to Tatum in the Left, right, right. At the break, Tatum drills the three. And that was. That was big. Basically. It wasn't. I'm calling it a dagger three, but it wasn't really the dagger, but it kind of was. So then that's when Tatum kind of like, got back to himself a little bit. But like I said, he scored 12 points in the. In the first quarter. He ended up with 20. So just six, eight the rest of the way. Six of 16, three rebounds, two assists. So I'm gonna say obviously needs work. That's part of the rehab process. And look, I think one of my takeaways from these two games is that Tatum is answering, like, a lot of these questions about Tatum have been answered already. It took two games to get the. The answers to what we've been looking for. Obviously, there is more to be done. We know that the. The kind of integration with this team and getting the timing down on some of these plays, and it is a little bit of a different set of things that he's going to need to do where he sets the picks. He's going to have to set more picks than he's used to. He's going to have to be part of that offense more so than he has in the past in terms of, like, setting the. The pin downs and, you know, flipping the screens and doing, you know, a couple more things off the ball. It's just a little bit of a. An adjustment there. Not a big deal at all, but still an adjustment nonetheless. And the. The kind of Jalen Brown piece is going to be something that just needs a little bit of refining as we go through this game was a little bit more kind of like, my turn, your turn thing. I think maybe by design to get Tatum, like, okay, you're. You're getting this first. The first quarter minutes that. Let's. Let's get Tatum some. Some of these opportunities early because he's fresh. Let's go. Let's work him in. Let's. Let's, you know, make this thing happen. And then Jalen in the third quarter kind of was like, okay, this is. This is my time. Not, like in a bad way. It's just, I think they, by design, were letting, like, that's when Jalen was going to start doing his thing in the third quarter. He was great in the third quarter, right? This. That. That's where the Celtics kind of were able to hold off another Cavs charge and build, you know, build their lead out to its biggest point. And. And Jalen was definitely a part of that third and fourth quarter. So I do think they're going to have to figure out some of these things out as they go along. But you watch Jalen on his Twitch stream the other day and he was talking about like he seemed genuinely excited to be doing a little bit more off ball stuff and his, you know, catch and shoot game is. There has been no catch and shoot game this year for him because he's been on the ball so much. So with Tatum back, think getting some more catch and shoots is going to be a big deal for him. So that I think is something that still needs to be refined. I think refined is the best way to put it. Not figured out. Not are they going to be able to do it? It's clear already that they will be able to figure whatever they do need to figure out. It's just a refining process. Because Tatum is nowhere near cardio wise where he's going to be when he's fully back. 100%. He's further along cardio wise than I expected because I didn't even expect him to play in this game. It's obvious that the 27 minutes that he's playing and the fact that he played in this game 36 hours after the last game, I think it's obvious that he made a lot more progress in the practices and the ramp up, the pre return ramp up. I think he's just made a lot more progress in that, in that regard. I think back to back to Shams talking about how Tatum didn't want to come back unless he was, you know, Jason Tatum. Right. He didn't want to come back as some percentage which was impossible. He's not 100%. He was never going to be 100% without playing some games and getting those under his belt. But he is closer to looking like Jason Tatum than I expected him to. I thought this was going to be a much longer, a much more obvious kind of ramp up. I thought we were going to see. Okay. Tatum is a little bit more demonstrative of needing some time off. The way the way they handle it, the way they put this plan together, this, this has been a great, a great return for, for Tatum. Just, just in these two games I think he's been, he's shown enough to say like, okay, this is, this is going to be. Jason Tatum is back. He's. He gets winded, he gets tired right now just because that's, that's the one thing that is actually living up to expectations. A human being is not ready to play NBA basketball right away after missing 300 days, that at least that part came true. But Tatum's progress has been, you know, or where Tatum was coming in is much further along than I expected. It's kind of like Groundhog Day, you know, Groundhog Day, when he goes in to play the piano. And like, I was expecting it to be like the first day where he's just think, dink, dink. Imagine that teacher, like, a year into the process when he just walks in for his first lesson and he's just banging things out and he clearly needs some work, but you're like, wow, this is your first time? And, yeah, that's how I feel. I feel like the teacher who's watching him, like, is this your. This is only your second day back? Really? Like. Like, this has been Groundhog Day for Tatum for three months, and just now the rest of us are getting, like, the first look at Tatum has played this game against the Cavs 30 times, and we're just getting this. This is our first time remembering it. That's how it feels to me sometimes. So really good progress. Really good. Very encouraged by everything Tatum is doing. No concerns whatsoever. No concerns with him personally, how he looks, no concerns with his fit with the team, none of that stuff. Any questions, anything like that, I think have already been answered. Like, the storylines, whatever people have been trying to drum up, it's all answered. It's all done. It's all over with as far as I'm concerned. Now it's just getting Tatum up to speed physically, just getting his cardio up. And just, like I said, the refining of the plays and just figuring out the timing between him and Jalen and. And all that stuff. It looked a little bit better against Dallas, probably because Dallas wasn't. Is not as good as the Cavaliers, and it's going to be a little bit of an up and down thing for moving forward, but I just. I have. I have no concerns. And I just feel like anything that I expressed over the 10 months that have been leading up to this, now I'm like, okay, everything answered, let's just let him get back to it. And I feel like within, you know, a month, right around playoff time, Tatum will just look a lot more like himself and it'll be. It'll be just fine. Let's come back, we'll talk about that second quarter, which was obviously pivotal. Jaylen Brown and the rest of the guys, we'll talk about them when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by. Second quarter was where this game really turned. The Celtics. The Celtics weren't good in the second quarter. Let's just be honest here. The Celtics in the second quarter shot 5 of 20. They were 1 of 9 from 3. They did go to the line 10 times. They were perfect. They scored 21 points. In any other scenario, 21 points in a quarter on 5 of 20 shooting and 1 of 9 from 3, you'd be like, ooh, how hard? How much of a hit did we take? Well, The Celtics added 11 points to their lead because the Cavs were worse. 4 of 25. O of 14 from 3. Wow. Right? And only went to the line four times. They missed two. They only had four offensive rebounds and all of that. And that's the big thing here for the Celtics that they, you can say some of the second quarter was Boston's defense for sure. Boston had a couple of really good defensive stands in that second quarter. It was. I remember one in particular where Derrick White just made this incredible read to get out to. I think it was Sam Merrill at the top of the key when Jalen. He and Jalen kind of made the same decision, went to the, the same place and, and Derek was just like, oh, you know what, I got to go this way. Just understood the situation, got out challenged. The shot was great. So some of that definitely happened in the second quarter. Also, to be real, the Cavs also just flat out missed a ton of shots in that second quarter. They went as cold as I've ever seen a team go in that second, and they only scored 10 points. This is, this is where the, the, the game really flipped. But let me actually rewind because I, I don't want to, I don't want to miss on what Sam Houser did in the first quarter where the Cavs came out to an 113 start. And it was. It was like Evan Mobley was dominating the game. It looked like, oh, this was an oh moment. And they weren't hitting threes. They were getting a lot of twos. Mobley was. Mobley hit a three, but he was mostly scoring inside, and he got a couple of blocks. But Sam Houser hits a couple of three pointers, and all of a sudden, Tatum hits one, Peyton hits one. The Celtics, because of Hauser starting this, that 113 became 1313 quickly. And then the Celtics ended up going up 35, 26 at the end of the first quarter. And that. That was as critical. Like when I talk about clutch shots that come outside of the fourth quarter, the Sam Houser three pointer early on, that triggered this run that tied the game up. Very important shot. That is a clutch shot, because instead of 11, you know, instead of it going to 14 or, you know, 13 or 14 three in the run continuing now, 13 or 11 to 11 to six. You feel like, okay, this. This is. Okay. It's only five points, right? The difference early on between, oh, they're starting to build a big early lead, and, oh, it's only five points. One stop, another shot, and here we are. We're good. Then that. That is a massive difference. And that's where I think it gets really important, right? It's seven. It's seven. Zero. Hower hits a shot. They get it to 11, three. Tatum hits a three. Then. No, Tatum hits. Tatum hits a. A fade away. Then houser hits a 3, 11, 8. Then Tatum hits the 3. It's 13, 11. Then Derrick White with a cut. Boom. 13, 13. Everything's settled. Everything's fine. And now the Celtics go on their run. Now the Celtics take off. And the difference between, oh, crap, they're really running away from this early on. We need to somebody. Maybe this is when somebody gets that, like, I got to do something. I got to take. I got to make a shot. I got to take something. You know, Jalen, Jason, somebody says, oh, okay, I got to do something. The pressure kind of ramps up a little bit. By hitting that three, everything calms down. The Celtics go off and go on their run to make it 35, 26. So then in the second quarter, as the Cavs keep missing and missing that. Now they're doing what I was saying the Celtics might have done. They're. They're searching, they're pressing. They're like, okay, no, I'm gonna take this shot. I got it. This is open for me. I got it. Nope, that's a miss. And then everything you see Thomas Bryant had a shot that he missed and it was a layup and he just deflated. Boom. Celtics go down the other end. So that. That's all important stuff there. So that second quarter was. Was massive for the Celtics. The rebounding was critical in that second quarter. And that's on everybody to go in there and not only get the stops, but to clear the now, the Cavs aren't exactly a monster rebounding team. They're not going to crash the boards a lot despite, you know, having Evan Mobley who had a couple, but they're not going to crash a ton. So Nene with four rebounds in that quarter, Derrick White with five rebounds, defensive rebounds in that quarter, you got everybody kind of stepping up. Pritchard gets a couple, Baylor gets a couple. Those all add up. And when a team is that cold and you can go, you can make them go one and done, you don't give them a chance to get that confidence. Critical stuff. That first quarter, the second quarter, those moments set things up for the rest of the game. Because now the third quarter can happen. And we'll get, when I come back, we'll talk about Jalen hitting big shots. And then it allows you that pad for the fourth quarter where the Cavs start making their run. Oh, you get that oh moment. But you've built up such a big lead because of the early stuff that you did that they don't have enough to come through, says come back. We'll talk about Jalen and wrap up the show when we come back. Jaylen Brown third quarter was I think where he really the third and fourth quarter were his his moments. He had nine points in the third quarter, four of six shooting. No three pointers attempted. All of them were mid range. Took a couple of shots to dial it in, but I thought that he got to spots when the when the the Cavs were starting to chip into the lead. The the Jalen and again Sam Houser. Sam Houser did it again, right? They found him For a couple of buckets, the lead got down to 13 or so. Houser hits a couple of shots, then Jalen gets going from the mid range, and all of a sudden, boom. That lead goes up to 26 at one point. And that. That's just huge, right? That. That's where you've built your pad. And I know the Cavs made a run in the fourth quarter, but because of what I said before in that second segment, and now Jaylen Brown comes in and is finding his spots. Sam Houser getting those. Those clean looks, it sets the Celtics up to keep building that lead. So I thought Jalen had a really, really nice game. He finished. What did he finish with? 23 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists. Just a little bit, you know, a little struggle early on. So it wasn't the most efficient night, but he found his. He found it when he needed to find it. And like I said before, I think that some of the struggles early on were just finding his spots as Jason was going. And this is just part of the refining process that he and Jalen. Jason and Jalen will both kind of find their spots within the flow of the game with. With it being a little less kind of me. Okay, you get this portion. I get that portion. So. But Jalen in the third quarter, and especially because Jason was kind of not in the flow again, I'm not sure if it was a fatigue thing or whatever. Jalen had to be the guy to kind of carry things through, and the Celtics kind of leaned back on what they've been doing all season long. So the third quarter was really important for Jalen to kind of come through there. And Baylor. Shireman, now Baylor. I love Baylor's game partly because great for him to. To step in off the bench and find this the same level of success that he's been having as a starter. But at halftime, I'm sitting here watching the halftime show, just. It's halftime, so I'm, you know, grabbing a sandwich. I'm just kind of chilling out. Halftime show is on. I'm watching it. And they show a highlight with the Derrick White. Was it rebound or a steal? And it gets it out to Baylor for a dunk. And Shaq's like, I don't even know who this kid is. And Ernie says, let's Baylor Shireman. And Shaq says, I would never let a Baylor or a Scheileman score on me, because of course, Shaq has to make everything about him. And so he does the whole I don't know who this guy is bit and then Baylor comes out in the second half and just goes off. He had. He had the nine points there in the third quarter or six points there in the third quarter. Nine points in the. In the. In the half. He shot. Let's see, three of four from three in that second half. He had five rebounds. He had two offensive rebounds. He was a real. Just really big for the Celtics in that half. And every time he was doing it, I was like, ah, does Shaq know who he is now? Does Shaq know who he is now? Because, I mean, even if it's a bit. It's either disrespectful because take the time to watch the game and learn who these guys are, or it's disrespectful in a. This dude's having his moment, his highlight, his. You know, this is an important stretch for him. He's a young player. Give him the respect of knowing. Of knowing his name and saying his name on the broadcast, man. Come on. That's. I find. I find that to be a little disrespectful one way or the other. So. I was loving the fact that Charman was stepping up in the second half. Peyton Pritchard, fourth quarter, getting to his favorite spots on the floor. He. He had nine in the fourth quarter. So the Cavs start to chip away. They get it down to eight, and you're like, oh, man, there's still enough time here for the Celtics to kind of. Kind of blow this. But Peyton Pritchard, as that. At that. As that lead was getting down further and further. Six and a half minutes to go. 94.86. Pritchard hits a three pointer, and then Pritchard hits after a Tatum free throw, and it's back down to. Let's see. Donovan Mitchell hits a floater. It's 98, 90. Pritchard turnaround, fade away. Then Cavs great defense. Celtics force a turnover with the shot clock violation. Pritchard, step back, turn around, fade away. Same thing. It's. It's getting to that spot over and over and over again for Pritchard. He. That drive, spin, hierarching fadeaway has become his signature this season. And to see him unleash that multiple times there in that. In that fourth quarter was huge. Shireman gets a big three pointer there at one point when the game was down to 10. Then Tatum, nice drive. When the game is at 9. That. That was good to see that level of aggression. So he gets that game. He. He helps keep the Cavs at bay. And then that play That I talked about earlier where it's, it's Peyton to, you know, fighting to keep possession out to Keita, out to tatum for the three pointer. That makes it 107.95. The Cavs still made it a game, but at that point, no other. No other made baskets. It's. There were no other made baskets after that. It was just free throws and the Celtics kind of hold them off. So everybody does something, right? Everybody in this, even Derrick White, who just haven't really mentioned them because he did things he did. Like I did mention that defensive play. I did mention that, that assist out to Baylor. He did do some other things, right? He had seven rebounds, five assists. That's nice, but six points on 2 of 9 shooting. They didn't need him to do anything, but it still would have been nice, but everybody did something in this game. Tatum's start, Hauser in the first and third quarter. K with the rebounding, Jalen stepping up, leading the team in that second half. Payton in that fourth quarter, Baylor in the third quarter. Everybody kind of had an impact. Luca Garza got in, he got into foul trouble. And maybe not so much. Ugonzales, seven minutes. Maybe not so much a tough game for him dealing with James Harden. Look, it's tough when you're a young kid and you got to defend James Harden. Ugo's been defending a lot of guys well. This is a definite, definite learning opportunity for him. The film session is going to be fun for Ugo. So it was a bad UO game, but he'll bounce back, no doubt about it, because he's going to be the best player ever. So shout out to. I got a tweet from someone. His name's Tom, I believe, or was. I was on Blue sky and said that this, this is like the greatest compliment I could get. Said his kids watch too much of the podcast because not only do they applaud Tom Westerholm when he comes on. When, when they got to pick which jerseys they wanted, they both went to. They both wanted Ugo and Zales jerseys. So a lot of pressure, a lot of pressure for me on my take with Ugo and how good I think he's going to be. Because if. If kids are starting to buy jerseys based on what I'm saying, I'm like, oh, that's a lot of pressure. But I stand by it. I stand by it. So thank you for that note. I do appreciate that. Thank you for listening. Thank you for watching. This is a fun one. Celtics get, you know, big win. Here. A couple of tough games coming up. San Antonio okc. I was gonna say, I don't know which game Tatum's gonna play in. I assume he's gonna play in both. Now. I just, I'm not gonna assume anything with Tatum. He seems like he's ready and he's gonna keep ramping up. I don't know. I don't know how it's gonna go, but at this point, I just expect him to keep playing. I still don't expect him to play back to backs. That's the one thing I still don't expect. But the other stuff, I think he's, he's in a good spot. So thank you for listening. Thank you for watching. I do appreciate all of that. Now, the best thing you can do for me, honestly, is if you're talking Celtics with a friend or somebody else, just share the podcast and tell them that they should be watching and listening to the Lockdown Celtics podcast right here in the Lockdown Podcast network.
