Later on we'll talk about Nicola Vuchovic who is back. We'll talk about the turnovers which nearly cost them. We'll get into Jalen Jason, what makes them so good and what they're doing so much better than they have in the past. They. But we got to start here from TD Garden. If you're watching on YouTube you can see there is an intense. I'm going to back out of here. There's an intense game of I think it's knockout going on down there. So I moved up into the. I don't even know what section this is. There's a nice bar over here though. I wonder if they're still open. Anyway, the Celtics got an incredible game from Namishkada who is just absolutely, I think rolling right now. He had 18 points, seven rebounds. He's just been phenomenal for, for the Celtics recently and as I try to call up my. My box score, things just disappear on me here. The. The way he's been able to do here on offense, read. Read the. The what the defense is doing and make the appropriate play, especially in the pick and roll, just when to get in and out of the picks, when to stick on the pick one to slip. Just the variety of things that he is able to do and how he's able to execute these things offensively has been great. Not just the finishing, because he's a big guy, he's going to finish at the rim, he has a nice little floater and all that stuff. But for him understanding offensively, the. The defense, are they switching. I'm going to slip. I'm going to get out of this quickly. I. I'm going to. If they're up to touch and he, you know, you need them to. You need to just free up Tatum a little bit. It's. It's the sticking on the screen or the re. Screening if you know whatever it is that they're doing, he's understanding it better than he ever has before and it's opening things up for everybody, especially Tatum and Brown. And this is, this is an important, I think elements to what he's been able to do. You. You can't blitz Tatum and Brown. You can't blitz when. When Keda is sitting setting a pick because he now understands, okay, I need to short roll here and give them the option. And when he short rolls, he's making the right reads and it's still a work in progress. There's still things that he can improve on. In fact, there was one play here where he was looking specifically to get a handoff. I think it was the Peyton Pritchard. Jalen Brown cut down the middle and was open. Sam Houser was wide open for three and Nemi got a little too singularly focused on the play and not understanding what was going on behind him. Still a work that something that he needs to work on. But even though even so he's still able to. Hey, we're make that next right play. Make that next right read. He's able to find guys and make the passes, move the ball, do these things. I, I said the other day I wrote on Celtics on Si that he's doing kind of a Luke Cornett impression, which is a compliment and some people might say it's unfair because he's his own player. But in. In a. In what he's able to do with. In terms of Luke was able to move the Ball. He never held the ball. He never just. It never stuck with him. He would get it if it was in a short roll, he would just get it and move it. He did. He was great at just changing, getting the ball to change sides of the floor. So it's not just stagnant, it's not just on one side. It's okay. Defense is stacked up over here. Just get it to me. I'm going to move it to the other side of the floor. We're going to get the defense moving and see if we can't get something free. That little stuff like those little things are. Those were Luke Cornett specialties. Are Luke Cornett specialties. Those are things that Nemi is starting to really excel at now. Is he going to be better than Luke? As good as Luke? Whatever it is, Luke was really good last year. If Neemi can be better than that or as good as that, then fine. Whatever he is, he is. Whatever he's going to be, he's going to be. I'm not putting a ceiling on the guy. I'm just saying that right now he's doing these little things that open things up. So offensively he is setting the screen. Rolling. Is it a roll all the way to the basket to score? So be it. He did. He's done that now two games in a row where the defense is reacting to Tatum with the ball and Tatum is just like, yeah, boink, there you go. You get the pass, you get. You get the finish. You get dunks, you get easy assist. Tatum is racking up assists off of Nami. Ashketa finishes. Is it passes then? So, yeah, then it's passes. And I don't even know how many assists Keita had. Four assists. So that's perfect. If you can get three, four, five assists out of that guy, oh, my God. Then everything changes. You if you now are watching the Celtics, the other team, right. If you're scouting the Celtics and you're watching, I think the book is going to start to be starting to be out on them now. The offense is. I don't want to overreact and say it's unstoppable. It's stoppable in some senses. If you can get them to turn the ball over, which they're generally pretty good at, but every once in a while when they turn it over, they really turn it over. But you're watching Keita and it's like, how do you attack Tatum and Brown if Keita is capable of beating you now, that's going to be the conundrum for other teams. That's the major factors to why this is such a huge development, why this is a big deal, why I'm starting with Keita above Tatum and above Brown in a game they combined for 49 points. Because now Keda has developed to a point just from beginning of season to now, he's improved so much that Jalen, he called it, what do you call it, a privilege. Jalen Brown called it a privilege to watch Keita improve the way he has. And he said from beginning of the season to now, it's like night and day. So that kind of stuff is. Makes Kada incredibly valuable and that's just on offense, on defense. I swear something I've never seen before. How many Raptors were more afraid to go into the paint when K was there? They weren't challenging him. I saw in this game more than I've seen in any other game. I think drivers wings getting into the paint, seeing Kada and then and deciding, making their business decision. We're not going to, I'm not going to attack this guy. We're going to go reset it and we're going to do something different. And it's a big difference. I'll get to Vuch later, but Vucovic was in there and Murray Bos tried to end him with a poster dunk. Mamael SHV had a drive when he was looking right at Kada and was like, nah, I'm, I'm not going to do that. I'm going to move. So in, in almost within like a minute or two, you had plays where one of the centers was challenged hard at the rim. Your other center, your defensive center kind of scared the, the, the Raptors off. Scared a driver off. So more than, hey, he had three blocks in this game, which is always nice. And he had that one monster block from behind that he hit off the rim and off his own face, which is funny. He had yet another block where somebody was being posted up and he just rose up behind the guy, behind his own teammate and blocked the ball at the top, at the apex. That's just hard to do, but he's doing it beyond those plays, which are great, he is now entered rim bay deterrent, not just rim protector. He is now a deterrent at the rim. So I am again, for the second podcast in a row, going to say how impressed I am with this guy because it's been just this incredible run and he is playing his absolute best basketball right now in early April, heading into the playoffs. It's, it's incredible to see. And I remain just impressed by everything that he's been doing. So that's Keita. He was great. How about the actual stars on this team, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Let's get into what they've been doing. Better than I've seen in a long time, maybe ever. When I come back. Today's show is brought to you by Quo. It's spring. It's. It's a natural reset point. I'm John Corrales, by the way. I cover the Celtics for Celtics on SI. I've been covering the team for about 20 years doing this podcast for 10. So thank you for joining me on this journey. Celtics get the win by 14. Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown were typically awesome. This is exactly the type of thing you want to get from these guys. 23 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, three steals for Jason, 26 points for Jalen Brown, six rebounds, three assists, two steals for him. Now, they each had five turnovers. I'll get to that in a second. But other than that, these guys, it was a typical great game from these guys. I know it was a little sloppy early. They came out to a nice run. Then they got sloppy. They missed a bunch of shots. They turned the ball over a bunch. And then, you know, midway through the second quarter, third quarter, it was a little bit dicey. Fourth quarter, they took off. Pritchard was a big part of that run. Jason was a part of that run. Jaylen, it was kind of like in that order. Pritchard at the start, Jason in the middle. Jaylen kind of finished it off, and you got great production from your stars. Now, the thing about Jason, as he continues to get acclimated, this wasn't his best game back, but, you know, a few offensive fouls, that's going to happen sometimes. A lot of guys, you know, you get that push off, you're going to get called for that. But his rebounding remains incredible. He's obviously, it's more important that he is a great rebounder. And now for the first time in his career, his average is up above 10. So he's at 10.1. And if that sticks, it'll be a career high. Obviously. Small sample, right? It's not going to be a huge sample for him this season. But even so, the fact that he's out there chomping glass, getting those defensive rebounds, he's not going to crash the offensive boards, but he's going to get in there for the defensive rebounds. Massively important to close out defensive stops. Right? You, this has been, you know, that that was the, maybe the number one biggest weakness for the Celtics coming into the season. And now Jason helps kind of alleviate that. They've. They. They've done A good job correcting that before he came back. And now he just really, that ends that. He's been rebounding really well. He's been passing really well. I, I, I don't even know how to describe the passing other than it's just more fluid, it just feels more natural. It's, he's seeing things, he's anticipating things. The, the passes are quick, they're effortless. I think that might be the, the, the thing that stands out with, with Tatum's passing. There's kind of an effortless nature to them, especially recently, that he's just saying, okay, yep. Wait, if you get open. Wait, if you get open. Bump right off the dribble. Just natural move. Just natural. Boom, there it goes. Not even, it's, it's like a video game on an easy setting. Like, you probably should up the difficulty, but you want to just keep winning. And so you bring it down to medium instead of hard. I feel like Tatum is seeing the floor at like a medium difficulty, and he's picking it apart. It used to be hard. Now it's slowed down to medium. And he, he's just, it's a testament to everybody because pieces, they're making the right reads. Everybody's on the same page again. With Keda, it's a big thing. With Keda, Tatum is seeing the double teams. He's seeing how the defense is playing. It's simple. It's a very simple thing. But he's making this, that, that right play. Kate is making the right play. Other guys are making the right play. It's not just off of pick and roll, right. He's getting into the middle of a lane, and he's firing it out to Peyton Pritchard for three or Jalen Brown for three. It's, he's, he's just seeing everything so, so well. We'll see how that continues into the playoffs. But for him to, to be doing that so quickly, I, what can I say? It's an amazing kind of development. Once the efficiency kind of catches up to the rest of his game, Tatum's going to be back to himself, maybe even better. So it's great to see that. And then Jalen, his drives are standing out to me. He had a few drives in this game that, you know, against some pretty good defensive players. He had a few drives where it's like he's patient, more patient than, than ever. He's crafty around the rim. We can call them nifty finishes finishing with his left, which I hope that narrative has been crushed. He has addressed it before. He even addressed it recently with Brian Scalabrini on a video they did for NBC Sports Boston, where he's like, yeah, you know, I had surgery on my left hand. I couldn't dribble with my left hand for a while. Now that seems to be kind of all done. He's. He's driving left, crossing over right. He's driving right, crossing over left. He's finishing on the other side of the rim. He's. He's just. The way he's able to dance with the ball, attack, stop, start, change, change speeds again. Changing speeds is the most important thing. Jalen has gone from a straight line driver to changing speeds and being crafty and varying his finishes. You kind of can't anticipate a lot of what he's doing. Sometimes you can. Sometimes he gets a little too focused in and. And. And gets away from the stuff that's worked that. That happens with him, and it's got to be something that he's conscious of. But when he's just letting the game flow and letting it come to him, his drives are spectacular. And so in that fourth quarter, you had Pritchard and you had Jason and you had Jalen, and you had a. What was there. What was their fourth quarter? 30. Oh, let's see. 35 to 24. And that was. That was even worse. Like, it was a late. Kind of like Brendan Ingram hit a couple of buckets when it didn't matter anymore. So they. They. They just did a great job down the stretch there after, like, a tough third quarter. The turnovers. The turnovers were really a big problem where The Celtics had 18 turnovers for 24 points. Now they. They gave up. They were able to turn over the Raptors 15 times for 26 points, so that they were able to make up for it. But still, the. The turnovers. Jalen has to be better. He knows it. Jason has to be better. Although his were three offensive fouls, so just not live ball turnovers, but still turnovers. They still cost you possessions, but at the same time, you know, you do other things. Like Jalen had that. That free throw, the missed free throw rebound finish, which was a nice play. So they're able to survive the turnovers by playing defense and turning the Raptors over. Fourth quarter was. Was when they really poured it on. You know, it's kind of weird because the Celtics, you turn it over 18 times for 24 points, you shoot 8 of 28 from 3, and you still end up going running away with it and winning by 14. Everything else was even. They 47 of 88 from the floor. They only had four more shots than the Raptors. The Raptors had eight three pointers. They were 13 of 18 from the line, so the free throws were even. It's just the Celtics got to the rim a whole lot more. And that's, that's, that's a Jaylen Brown thing. That's, that's definitely a Jaylen Brown thing. Tatum got to the rim a few times, got, you know, a couple easy dunks. So they did that and then, so they did survive the turnovers. I'll come back, we'll talk quickly about some of the other guys that contributed, including Nikola Vucovic, who didn't exactly contribute in this game. But he is back and that's coming up next. My wife and my kids hate the sound of your voice because apparently I'm the first thing that they hear every day. So I apologize. Rory's wife and child. If you hear the sound of my voice right now, I do apologize. I'm. I don't. I'm sorry. I don't know what else to say. I know that I'm. I think I'm a nice person. So does that help? Thanks, everybody, for coming out and saying hi quickly around the box score. Sam Houser was, you know, decent. Uh, I like how he's able to attack closeouts and be effective attacking close outs to get a nice finish. Nice reverse layup. Drawing a foul. That was a. It was a nice play. Derrick White, he's. I think Derek is taking like a step back a little bit as everybody kind of figures themselves out, and he doesn't need to dominate the ball, but, you know, 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, plus 20. Game high. No, I'm sorry. Game high was Nemi who was plus 30. Boy, that was. I didn't realize that number. Derrick White was plus 20. Just solid, solid Derrick White game. But he doesn't need. He doesn't need to dominate things. And that's. That's fine. Like I said, Peyton Pritchard, 17 points, three assists. The three steals. Two of those steals came in the fourth quarter. They're a part of the run. Like, he had 11 points in the fourth quarter. It was a big reason why the Celtics were able to pull away Jordan Walsh played 13 minutes and played some defense, had a nice steal and a dunk. Joe Missoula after the games, like that's a guy you can rely on. I've said it before. I think Jordan has now leapfrogged Hugo Gonzalez. I think Ugo is now. He went into garbage time. He only played a minute. He, he's probably not going to get much opportunity in the playoffs. It's going to be more Jordan but you never know. You never know with Joe and Ugo. This is going to be every time I think, okay, this guy's out of the rotation. He comes in and has just a monster whatever quarter game or something. So I'm not, I'm not ruling Ugo completely out but it does, it does look like he's kind of. He's been supplanted by Jordan Walsh which is totally fine. Does not change my opinion of Ugo. I think he's gonna be great. No Luca Garza in this one because oh, I shout out Baylor Charman too. Not the best game in the world, but solid five rebounds. Missed a few shots. So Luca did not play. Once again, DNP code which is a decision because he played 13 minutes. He did a very difficult thing. He was a minus 14 in a 14 point win. That is hard to do and it was very indicative of how he played. I know in game plus minus can be wonky but this very much showed. I think the, the plus minus numbers that I've been signing are very accurately telling the story here. It's not something that I'm worried about and I understand that Garza has been playing well and has made a contribution. So right now obviously Keda has earned the, the bulk of the minutes and I don't even know what he played. Let's see, he played 33, almost 34 minutes. That's, that's not something I anticipated at the beginning of the season. But keda has earned 30 plus minutes per game when the playoffs come around. It's so wild that I'm saying this considering where I was beginning of the season getting 30 plus minutes. You need K to get 30 plus minutes in the playoffs if you're gonna have a chance to win. He has to be this version of Keda in the playoffs and for the Celtics to, to get to where everybody thinks that they're capable of getting. So that puts limited, that's a limited kind of now role for Vuchovic and for Garza. I no longer think Vuch is going to start. I think, I think even from when I was making that argument, the V only came here after the trade deadline, Right? So, you know, we're talking about February and March, and in that time, obviously, Vuch got hurt and missed all of March. Kata stepped up, and it's just like this is obvious. We're not messing with that. Vuch is coming off the bench now. He could still come off the bench and be paired with Tatum. I think that's probably still the way to go. However, it's going to be in a much more limited capacity. You need to just figure this out in the regular season. There's four more games left. The Celtics will have some opportunity to experiment because they're probably going to clinch the second seed very soon, if not before they face the Knicks, maybe when they face the Knicks. So they'll have two, three games to throw Vuch out there and just try some things. They still have to finish their job, and they don't want to go too crazy experimenting. But you have to throw Vuch out there, which I know means that Garza is going to get fewer minutes, maybe no minutes. But don't think that it's the end of Garza's time in the rotation. I still think that he can be useful, but you need. You need to get Vuch up to speed as fast as possible. Now, Joe said before the game, Vuch, you know, for four weeks has been there every film session, film session, every walk through every shoot around, every practice. He's learned a lot just by watching, just by taking it in, which is great. At the same time, doing, getting those reps, that's how you're going to hone all of that stuff. I can watch somebody do something. Actually doing is a different story. So he needs to. He just needs to get those minutes. Luca I. The. The downside of what he's done this season is he has performed very well after DNP stretches. And so everybody understands, hey, man, it's okay if he sits three, four games because you can put him in. You know, he's going to play well. And so now this is going to be another DMP stretch, probably because you have to get Vouch up to speed. He did not look great. His defense was poor. He was a little rusty with the shot. I think he just needs to play a couple of games, kind of get back up to speed. We'll see. We'll see. I have no idea what he's going to be able to do, what he's going to be in the playoffs if he. The good thing is if he's if it's clear that he's not the best option, then you just go to Garza. And the great thing is Neemi is taking up a lot of that space anyway. Just hope that Neem doesn't get into file trouble. And you also have the option of going small with Jason Tatum at the five. That, that's, that can be effective too. You don't want to do that too much, but that can be effective as well. So Vuch, tough one, tough one. But he's back. He's back and that's the important thing. Now let's see how they work him in moving forward. Joe is not one to use games to just say, hey, we're gonna, we're gonna spam these pick and roll. He, he wants guys to make the right reads and so he, he's, he's not going to get them out of the habit of making the right reads. But the Celtics do need to get Vuch involved in a lot of these actions. So. However, even if that means giving Keda a day off like one of these back to backs, the Celtics have a back to back coming up with New York and I forget who else. New Orleans, I think is it. Well, it doesn't matter. Give Neemi a day off. Just give him a day off and start Vuch and play Vuch 30 minutes and just let him, let him do the thing. Whatever. Don't, don't even stop them. I'm struggling. Let him play. Gotta do it. It's got to be a crash course here. So we'll see there. But nice little win. Nothing special about this win, but nice little win. Wasn't pretty. Little sloppy. Gotta. Gotta control those turnovers. Like I said before, when the Celtics. The Celtics generally don't turn the ball over, but when they do, man, they make it count. They. They turn the ball over a ton. So not the prettiest game, but run away with it in the fourth quarter, you get a double digit win. That's all that matters. Celtics now two magic numbers. Two to clinch the second seed. I'll be back tomorrow with much more podcasts all week long. Listen for bonus podcasts to drop throughout the week and when they play on weekends. So subscribe. Locked On Celtics – Episode Summary
Episode Title: Neemias Queta BETTER THAN EVER, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown GREAT in WIN Over Raptors
Host: John Karalis
Date: April 6, 2026
In this episode, John Karalis dives deep into Boston’s 115-101 victory over the Toronto Raptors, highlighting Neemias Queta’s breakout performance, the continued excellence of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and how all three have elevated the Celtics’ ceiling heading into the playoffs. Karalis analyzes key game dynamics – from Queta’s development into both an offensive connector and defensive deterrent, to the stars’ playmaking, and the ongoing questions about the frontcourt rotation with Nikola Vucevic’s return. The recurring issues of turnovers and lineup rotations are discussed in detail, providing listeners with a thorough, on-the-ground Celtics perspective.
[01:05–12:51]
“The way he’s been able to read the defense, especially in the pick and roll… understanding when to slip the pick, when to stick, when to short roll, how to open things up for Tatum and Brown… It’s just, it’s incredible.” [03:51]
“He’s doing kind of a Luke Kornet impression, which is a compliment… Those little things, opening up the court, keeping the ball moving. That’s what Nemi is starting to really excel at now.” [07:30]
“If you can get three, four, five assists out of that guy, oh my God. Then everything changes.” [08:48]
“Jalen called it a privilege to watch Queta improve... he said from beginning of the season to now, it’s like night and day.” [10:08]
“More than, hey, he had three blocks... he is now entered rim bay deterrent, not just rim protector... More wings got into the paint, saw Queta, and decided ‘not going to attack this guy.’” [10:47]
“He had that one monster block from behind that he hit off the rim and off his own face – which was funny.” [11:32]
[12:51–23:55]
“Pritchard at the start, Jayson in the middle, Jaylen kind of finished it off, and you got great production from your stars.” [13:58]
“His rebounding remains incredible... his average is up above 10 for the first time in his career. If that sticks, it’ll be a career high.” [15:08] “His passing… it’s just more fluid, it feels more natural. He’s seeing things, he’s anticipating. The passes are quick, effortless… He’s seeing the floor at like a medium difficulty now – and he’s picking it apart.” [15:40]
“He’s patient, crafty around the rim – we can call them nifty finishes, finishing with his left… He’s gone from a straight line driver to changing speeds, being crafty and varying his finishes.” [17:41]
“I hope that narrative’s been crushed... He addressed it himself, and now that seems to be all done.” [18:13]
[20:45–23:55]
“They were able to survive the turnovers by playing defense and turning the Raptors over.” [22:40]
[23:55–28:41]
“He was a big reason why the Celtics were able to pull away.” [24:45]
“Solid Derrick White game. Doesn’t need to dominate things, and that’s fine.” [24:20]
“Jordan has now leapfrogged Ugo Gonzalez… but you never know with Joe and Ugo.” [25:08]
[28:41–32:00]
“You need Keda to get 30+ minutes in the playoffs if you’re going to have a chance to win. He has to be this version of Keda in the playoffs.” [29:55]
“You have to throw Vuch out there… just give him a day off and start Vuch and play Vuch 30 minutes… Let him do his thing. It’s got to be a crash course.” [31:22]
Karalis on Queta’s leap:
“I’m not putting a ceiling on the guy. I’m just saying that right now he’s doing these little things that open things up.” [06:55]
On Tatum/Brown’s composure:
“Once the efficiency kind of catches up to the rest of his game, Tatum’s going to be back to himself, maybe even better.” [16:58]
Humor/Locker Room Insight:
“Shout out to... Rory, who said that my wife and my kids hate the sound of your voice because apparently I’m the first thing that they hear every day. So I apologize.” [24:08]
Karalis brings an enthusiastic but measured, analytical voice, drawing on deep familiarity with the team while letting his personality and humor shine through (“monster block…off his own face”). The episode is a thorough, basketball-savvy look at Queta’s improvement, the form of Celtics’ stars, and the subtle tactical shifts that set Boston up for the playoffs, while spotlighting areas to tighten up before the postseason stage arrives.
