The Dallas Cowboys open their season with a high-stakes showdown against the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football, aiming to capitalize on Dak Prescott’s dominance and an offense brimming with continuity. With John Harbaugh debuting as the Giants' head coach and Malik Nabers’ injury status uncertain, could Dallas gain an early edge in the NFC East?

the Cowboys will open the season against the Giants on Sunday Night Football, and we'll tell you why that is a great thing next. You are Locked on Cowboys, your daily Dallas Cowboys podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast network your team every day. Welcome back. I am your host Marcus Mosher. On today's show, we are taking a look at the scheduled release of the games that we know there's going to be more that we hear about over the next couple days. And on Thursday the NFL will release the entire schedule. But we get this like slow trickle of games that are coming out this week. And on Monday it was announced that the Cowboys will go to New Jersey to play the Giants miss In New York. They'll play New Jersey in Week one on Sunday Night Football in a game that we've seen a million times at this point. Point led in your first thoughts when you heard that the Cowboys will be playing the Giants in Week one.
Marcus Mosher
I I think it literally was again, you know, because it's just they've done it so much and there was a period of time that this was happening that you and I were complaining about the fact that it seemed like the Cowboys only ever played the Giants in week ones. You know, I don't know the numbers in front of me, but it felt like it was at least six or seven years in A row that they played.
Landon McCool
Yeah.
Marcus Mosher
So you know it's. And, and again also in the Cowboys. I mean I don't mind it that much because the Cowboys have historically had a lot of success here against this team. So it's interesting to me that, that this has kind of reared its head. I think what it, what it reads as is there's a lot of folks that think that the Giants are starting to be a better football team than they have been the last few years and now they think that this is a more premier matchup than than it previously had been.
Landon McCool
Well, it's. You get a big time coach making his debut with his new team in John Harbaugh. You've got a young second year quarterback in Jackson Dart who's really fun against the Cowboys team that puts up a lot of points early on in the season and that's what schedule makers like. It's two premier teams, big market teams in a game that should be fairly high scoring. Selfishly, I like this for a lot of different reasons. Number one, it's really nice to just be able to enjoy the Thursday game, the Friday game, the Sunday slate, you know, before your team plays. The other part of it is Landon like it's, it's nice to have a potential bad weather game early on in the season where it should be relatively warm. Now they played in New York a couple years ago and it was a rainy game but that'll happen. It's much better than playing this in December or January when you can get snow, it can be in the teens. I think for that reason alone the Cowboys get an advantage. And we should mention the Giants have two players on offense coming off major, major injuries.
Marcus Mosher
Yes.
Landon McCool
In Malik Neighbors and Kim Skatabo. Now it sounds like Scatterbo is a lot further ahead. He's going to be ready for training camp. We'll see if he's 100% by week one. But Malik neighbors is dealing with a multi ligament knee injury and if you just read some of the the beat reporters it sounds like his status for week one is going to be iffy. They might try to protect him from himself a little bit, put him on pup and if he's unable to go in that matchup that's a huge advantage for Dallas.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. So you know Neighbors dealing with obviously not just an ACL but a meniscus meniscus as well. So it's going to be a race the clock to see if he even gets back for week one. And like you said, maybe they just play it safe. Right. And not and not play him. But you know, again, you're getting a little bit of an advantage because you're at the very least don't feel like you're going to get a fully 100% Malik neighbors and. And you know, we'll see. Exactly. And again, I think also too, just a. A young football team that's got a new coach, new coaching staff. So, you know, week one is going to be a little bit uneven for them anyway. So, yeah, interesting game to say the least. But the Cowboys getting a little bit of a benefit here facing the Giants early in week one.
Landon McCool
How big of a concern is it that you're playing a new coaching staff with Matt Nagy who's going to be the offensive coordinator, a new defensive coordinator who I believe is Denard Wilson is. You can't go back on film from the previous years. It's going to be, you know, a defense that's been completely, you know, turned over. A new look offensive line. Like is that an advantage for the Giants or do you think the continuity for the Cowboys, at least on offense, gives them a leg up?
Marcus Mosher
I think, I think it's probably all washes out in the end, especially week one. Right. Like whatever advantage that the offense might have by not being very well known because it's being new probably is being washed away by the fact that it's a little bit disjointed. You've got a young quarterback, you've got an offense that they're still kind of learning and getting used to. So I imagine it's probably all the same. And then you add in the fact that, I mean, let's be honest, it's Matt Nagy that's the offensive coordinator.
Landon McCool
There's lots of tape on what he wants to run.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, there's lots. I folks know what the answers are that he's trying to get to in most cases. So yeah, I don't think there's going to be a ton of surprises for the Cowboys.
Landon McCool
And then for the Cowboys, they have a new defensive coordinator as well in Christian Parker. It's going to be a new look defense with several new starters. It's going to be a fascinating matchup because talent wise, I mean, at least you look on the paper, the Cowboys are the more talented team and that's why in FanDuel they, their win total is higher, their odds to win the super bowl are higher, but you don't really know until you get to week one. And it's a, it's a team that's going to be at Home, they're going to be fired up again. A coach that really wants to start off on the right foot. This has been a matchup in previous years. The Cowboys have had such, the, such an upper hand. I don't know if that's going to be the case here.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I, I feel like it could be one of those things where, you know, again, we're not making predictions this week early, but I just because of. Based on the things that we're talk about and, and depending on obviously the health of who's available. But I, I think it's probably one of those things where it's going to be real uneven early on. Right. As two teams kind of like figure each other out a little bit and also just honestly figure themselves out, you know, especially on, on offense where you've got like you said, an office that doesn't really know what it's doing quite yet. They're still trying to figure things out. But also a defense that's on in the same boat. Right. Like, you know, completely new, new system. So, yeah, it's going to be interesting to see exactly how, you know, these two kind of body blow each other early in this game while they're trying to sort each other out. And then by the end you feel like maybe talent kind of wins over.
Landon McCool
I'm just glad it's not like Philadelphia last year where you're playing a premier team, at least we thought so right out of the gate. Now, the Cowboys had played really well in that game. They had plenty of chances to win. They're gonna, their schedule is going to be incredibly difficult this year. You're hoping that you can stack some of these early season wins because you look at that away schedule, it's. It's brutal. I mean, it. There's not going to be many games where they're favored on the road. It's going to be really important for this Cowboys team to get off to a quick start against a team that Dak Prescott has had a lot of success with, against in the past. And I think because you're returning all 11 starters, you'll presumably have a healthy Dak Prescott. I actually feel pretty good, like this is one of the better outcomes I think us Cowboy fans could have wished for. I mean, I think honestly, this is, this is pretty good.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Dak Prescott's played more games in the, the Giant stadium than Jackson Dart has, if I'm not mistaken. So sure he has. So, I mean, yeah, there's not going to be any kind of like surprise or anything like that. Like that's the one thing that, you know, that is the constant, the true thing is that we know what the Cowboys offense is going to be and I have a feeling that they're gonna probably, you know, even with the additions that have been made, I have a feeling they're gonna have a good time in up in Jersey.
Landon McCool
Just talking to a couple Giants fans on Monday. They are very nervous about this matchup because they are not super thrilled about the state of the secondary right now. A lot of moving parts again there. They've got a lot Two new linebackers, Arvel Reese and Terrell Tremaine Edmonds. Excuse me. It could be a little dicey for the for the Giants up front. Could be the same for the Cowboys, the new defensive coordinator. But I think of the four units, the Cowboys offense is clearly the best and it's got the most continuity. That generally matters early in the season. And again, we're not making predictions, but weirdly enough, I feel fairly good. Four months out.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, as it stands, four months away from the game, we're right on schedule.
Landon McCool
All right, let's talk about another game that we found out about on Monday and that's who the Cowboys will be playing on Thanksgiving. We'll talk about that matchup next. Again, we knew this game, it's going to happen on Thanksgiving. It was going to happen in that 4:30 Eastern time slot. You knew that it was going to be an NFC opponent. So Philadelphia on a short week. How you feeling about that?
Marcus Mosher
You know, it's adding some spice to our turkey bird. Right. Like it's, it's, it's really is anticipating me yelling a lot on Thanksgiving, which again, I know the family is not going to be thrilled about. Yeah. I mean like look, it happened, it happened. It's happened previously. Not too long ago. It feels like that we, we played an NFC east rival that was worthy kind of of playing at Thanksgiving. So it's not completely out of the norm. We played them close to Thanksgiving last year and, and played really tough Kansas or what we thought was going to be a really tough Kansas City game, you know, in, in that Thanksgiving. So it does feel like usually it feels like when I was younger these Thanksgiving Day games were kind of set up for the Cowboys to win. And now, and now they are very difficult games. Like it seems the last few years especially like they've really scheduled some tough games with the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And I think that's the point. I think they got tired of all these, I want to say like B tier games. But I think the NFL wanted to use Thanksgiving as like a real showcase. And that's why I even think like the Lions are getting now that the Lions are getting better. The Lions have been pretty good over the last four years. You're getting even better matchups in that slot. I think Green Bay was who they played last year. I'm sure they're going to get another big time opponent. I think the NFL wants this to be like, hey, this is the best that we have to offer. Come watch these games. And I would expect like usual, that was a Week 13, Week 14 matchup between the Cowboys and Eagles. That's probably going to go a long way in deciding who's going to win this division?
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, it's just, you know, it's, it's rough that it's, and I think I commented about this before, it's rough that it's a division game. Right. And especially against Philly, it's just kind of raises the stakes on this Thanksgiving game to, to a level that's, that are super, really high. These, these Philadelphia games specifically are some of the most important regular season games you're going to play, not just because of who Philly is, but because they're your main rival in their, in the division. So you need to collect the wins that you get the opportunity to take from them and to give up your, your home game so that you can play Thanksgiving against the Eagles on four days rest. I mean, again, they have to deal with it too, but it's, but it's, it's, but it still just feels like, man, I just wish I had normal amount of resources allocated to me for playing that game.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, the only advantage is at least I think the Cowboys are going to be the younger team going into the season. Philadelphia's got a lot of older players on offense, including Saquon Barkley, who's older for a running back, Lane Johnson, Dallas Goddard. Maybe they won't be able to handle the short, you know, rest as well as the Cowboys will be. What I'm more fascinated to see is what happens the week before. Do they play another home game? Because that was the advantage last year is they played Philadelphia on that Sunday before at home and then they played Kansas City at home. So not having to travel makes a big difference, I think.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah.
Landon McCool
If the Cowboys get another home game, you know, four days before they play the Eagles, I do think that's where you can see a big, big, big time advantage for them.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, absolutely. The travel gap is a huge thing. And I mean, I'm only kind of half joking when I say this, but I also think there's something to be said for the fact that playing Philly that kind of later in the season, at that point of the season, could there be a chance that they're unraveling already at that point? I mean, you know, look, I mean, they've had not exactly the best vibes off season, really. And so you wonder if this Sean Manion experiment doesn't work out, like, is there a chance that, that, you know, this whole thing kind of unravels on itself by the time Thanksgiving rolls around. So Philadelphia's in an interesting spot to say the least. Right. We're still waiting for the other shoe to drop on the A.J. brown situation. Still not exactly sure how that wide receiver room is going to suss out. They've got talent, but, you know, they've kind of have a lot of overlapping talent. It feels like I, I, this is a game that like, I think before, in, in pre seasons, previous to this, I would have, I would have looked at this game, been like, man, that, that really makes me nervous. Now. It's kind of, I'm more just interested to see how they, how they handle this and where they are at that point. Let's say season.
Landon McCool
We're going to talk about another game that the Cowboys are going to be. It's already been announced for week three. We'll talk about that in a little bit. But really quickly. I, I've seen a lot of strength of schedule stuff over the last couple days. I believe the Cowboys have the fourth hardest strength of schedule this year, and that's why a lot of people are taking them under their projected win total according to FanDuel right now, which is eight and a half. How much do you care about strength of schedule in May?
Marcus Mosher
I mean, not a ton, you know, because like, these teams change over so much, I think, I mean, you certainly have more idea in May than you do in February or March. Right? Like, but I, I don't think that it's so much more because, just because you get the context of the rookies and, and some free agent signings, I don't know that it's so much more that like I'm, you know, counting wins. I'm sure we'll all do. Look, we have, we make content for a living, so we're gonna be doing stuff like that. But as far as like, would I put money down on any, on any of this stuff? I think it would be hard for me to do so because I just think that there's so much that can happen between now and then and, and, and, and in the season, week to week, that happens. That's crazy. So it's hard to really kind of rest your laurels on. Just think that it outsourced that completely to what they did last year.
Landon McCool
Injuries play such a big part of this. Like, for example, if you had the Kansas City Chiefs on your schedule last year, on the back half of your schedule, you probably thought, oh man, okay, that's a guaranteed loss. And then you get to that game and Patrick Mahomes isn't playing, Xavier Worthy's not playing. The Chiefs are, you know, kind of soft, tanking and even if you played the middle part of your schedule, they weren't quite the same team as they were the previous year when they were in the Super Bowl. Right. So that's why you can't get hung up on it too much. But one of the things that I'm going to be looking for is seeing do the schedule makers give the Cowboys any kind of advantages? And there are a couple out there. Like, for example, the Indianapolis Colts are a team the Cowboys play on the road. We don't know the status of Daniel Jones, who's coming off a torn Achilles. Do they get Daniel Jones early in the year? Do they get them later in the year? And the same goes for Green Bay. The Cowboys will play the Green Bay packers on the road. I almost guarantee you that game will not be in the first month of the season like I almost. I'll guarantee you schedule makers will want to make sure that game is like in November or December to make sure that Micah Parsons is relatively healthy. But it's just little things like that I'm going to be paying attention to.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. I mean, again, there's lots of reasons you'd like to play the Green Bay early on the road, but yes, Michael not being available would be one of the nice benefits if it happens that way. But yeah, I wouldn't expect it because again, it's. It's a product that they're. We're all trying to sell. And. And they. They're going to put the premier games in a spot where there's going to be the most eyeballs. And. And in a way that it's going to incur the most eyeballs, and that's having Micah Parsons out there against his former team for. For sure.
Landon McCool
One more thing on the schedule really quickly, there's only a couple games that could be bad weather for them. Here's our road games. Texans, that's a dome. Colts, that's a dome. Rams, that's a dome. Eagles, we don't know that game yet. Seattle, we don't know that one yet. And Washington and Green Bay, we do know that the Giants is going to be in Week one. So you're only looking at a potential four games that could potentially be dealing with weather, and inevitably, two of those will be in September or October where it's not really a factor. So for that reason alone, this works out. Then again, you look at that schedule. Houston, Indianapolis, Rams, Eagles, Seattle, Washington, Green Bay, New York. There's not really a layup game on the road. That's always tough.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. Other than maybe New York right the way. Yeah. So, yeah, it's a, it's a really tough schedule. And again, like, you know, basing it on what we can, which is last year, those are some really good teams. Now, by the time we play them, they may look very different than what we said.
Landon McCool
Maybe the Cowboys won't be good. Who knows?
Marcus Mosher
Or. Or maybe they'll be much better than we expect. So, you know, there you go. It's. It's crazy how much these things change as we go week to week.
Landon McCool
All right, let's talk about one more game that has been announced. That's who the Cowboys will play in week three. We'll talk about that matchup next. This episode is brought to you by Game time. Welcome back to The Loton Cowboys podcast. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen. Every single day, one more game has been announced. That's the Cowboys matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3, and that game will take place in Brazil. The Cowboys are actually losing a home game, and I just think, Layna, we're gonna have to get used to this. Like, whenever you have nine home games versus eight road games, that's generally whenever you're gonna have one of those home games stolen for an international game. What do you think about this matchup? This is a, you know, team the Cowboys do not face very often against the quarterback that's really hard to defend when he's healthy. What do you think?
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, the Cowboys haven't had a ton of success against the Ravens, you know. Nope. And. And which Giants fans are very quick to point out because they think it's John Harbaugh that's.
Landon McCool
They have Lamar.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah.
Landon McCool
Yeah.
Marcus Mosher
No, it's not so much. Yeah, yeah, it's interesting matchup. Right? Like, and again, a team that, I mean, you want to talk about, like, underachieving, like, I think everyone had really, really high expectations for the Ravens going into the. The season last year. Their defense was just so bad, like, and so bad in a way that was really, really shocking considering who they are and the kind of DNA of that. Of that franchise. And then on top of that, it just felt like the offense couldn't quite catch the same kind of spark that it was previous.
Landon McCool
Well, because Lamar missed two months with a hamstring injury. Just was really never the same.
Marcus Mosher
But even before that, too. Right. Like, it felt like it wasn't quite. Yes. And then obviously Lamar missing all the time really kind of sunk them for. For a good portion. So it'll be interesting to see they are a little bit older. Obviously, the mars dealt with some injury stuff. You know, the, the running attack doesn't quite seem to have the teeth that it used to, or at least it did even just two years ago. Right. With. With. With. With Mike McDonald. Yeah, with Mike McDonald. So I, I think the key thing is, is going to be how quickly they get that defense up and running under mentor, how, you know, how quickly they have talent on that side of the ball. There's no doubt. It's just about kind of assembling it around what mentor wants to do. And, and they. I think they did a good job of kind of assembling some more pieces there. And then just seeing, like, if you.
