Dallas Cowboys suffer another blowout loss as defensive woes mount. Tyler Smith’s shift to left tackle sparks debate about the team’s long-term offensive line strategy, while rookie receiver Ryan Flournoy flashes true WR3 potential before an injury slows the offense. Javonte Williams battles heavy usage, raising questions about the Cowboys’ running back depth as the offense struggles to regain its early-season form.

I am your host, Marcus Mosher. He is Landon McCool. And on today's show, we're breaking down the Cowboys blowout loss to the Los Angeles Chargers Land And I actually thought they were going to come out and play well this game. And to their credit, they did. In the first half they hung right with the Chargers. And then the second half was some of the worst football I've seen from a fairly healthy unit on both sides of the ball.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, I think we need to identify who the they is because I don't think the defense at any point played good football. Almost even down to his individual snaps. It was, it was terrible. But yeah, I think early on the offense kind of performed how we had hoped they would. Right. Against a good defense that had been really good against defending the pass, the Cowboys are able to move the ball and score points and keep up with a Chargers team that was having zero difficulty getting through the Cowboys defense. So yeah, I think that on the offensive side of things, it felt like it was trending towards a big time shootout that was go all the way to the end of the game. And then it just felt like by the second half the things kind of teetered a little bit. The Cowboys get behind by more than a touchdown and suddenly the game kind of just fell apart from there. And it wasn't too long after that the Cowboys just kind of started waving the white flag and throw through Joe Milton in. So yeah, it started out like it was going to be a close but high scoring game and then things kind of started to pull away in the Chargers favor and the cotton.
Marcus Mosher
We're going to talk about some weird things that happened this game, including Tyler Smith starting at left tackle on the defense. We'll get to that in a second. But one of the most notable things for me is that this game, and maybe it was just me, there was just no juice at all. Even when like George Pickens made a big play down the sideline, you got like a very sarcastic clap from the crowd. This is what happens when you play kind of meaningless football. I don't know if you felt that, but I certainly did where it's just like everybody just felt like we've got a game in four days, let's try to stay healthy and get through the rest of the season. And that's a bad spot to be at. It's an awful, awful spot to be at.
Landon McCool
Yeah. I mean, you know, look, I think the lethargic, you know, feeling started when you saw the, the pregame. You know, they, they released the videos of the pregame rush for, for the guys to get to the fan stadium standing room only section. And it didn't, wasn't quite the dead sprint that we have seen in previous one of these open people kind of jogging to get there. It just felt like, yeah, I mean, you know, once there's no, like you said, juice left in the season, once there's no a possibility of, of playing in the playoffs, everything just seems less meaningful. Right. And so the highs don't feel as high. And yeah, it was easy for, for, for the Chargers to kind of continue, continue to, to play with high energy because they're still playing for something. They're still, they still have things on the line. So I think for the Cowboys, what was even more deflating in that line was that this game felt like, and maybe I've said this too many times now for it to mean anything, but this felt, this game felt like a microcosm for the larger season where it was just very much by the book, 2025 Cowboys Problems. Right. Where you've got a defense that can, cannot stop a thing and an offense that's having to continually score and then gets put into his position where they have to operate from a game script that they're, they're not, you know, just comfortable operating from. Yeah. And so it, it just felt like the energy part that, that may have existed earlier in the season when there was a lot of hope left that just quickly evaporated and, and didn't give give way to anything after that. It was mostly just completely bad vibes at a certain.
Marcus Mosher
All right, L. Let's talk about some of the things outside of the outcome because if you're listening to this podcast right now, I'm sure you don't care about the outcome of this game. In fact, I'm sure there's fans out there that are actually happy with the outcome because it might mean that you're drafting a little bit higher. But one of the big stories of this game is that Tyler Smith, the Cowboys Pro bowl left guard, started the game at left tackle. Akima Den played last week because Nate Thomas was banged up with a shoulder injury. Nate Thomas practiced all week long, but apparently the Cowboys didn't like what they saw. Not only did he start in this game, but Schottenheimer after the game said that he's going to continue to start at left tackle for the remainder of the season even when Tyler Guyton is healthy. And Guyton's going to go back to being the swing tackle. I found that interesting. What are your thoughts on that?
Landon McCool
I had a lot of thoughts about this. Honestly. I, I, I don't love ultimately where we're headed, where we're trending. Like, I mean, I, I think that Tyler Smith played fine at left tackle. I, I, you know, but I think that obviously he is a better guard than he is a tackle. I think he could go out there and be a better than average left tackle. There's no doubt. And, and maybe that's, you know, right now a step up from where you're get what play you're getting. Certainly probably better than what Nate Thomas is doing. Right. My thought was always, of course Tyler Smith would be better at left tackle than Nate Thomas, but you wanted Nate Thomas out there to get those snaps because you wanted him to get the opportunity and the experience and that's kind of what was important going on right now. And, and, and now we're kind of getting into this area where I feel like we're getting a real mismatch on are we trying to win these games or are we trying to evaluate players and where is that line being drawn? Right. Because to me this feels like a, hey, we're desperate to try to win this game, you know, and, and play this game. And, and, and in a way that we're going to try to come out with a victory as opposed to like maybe kind of giving some of these young guys opportunities to the value.
Marcus Mosher
But if you hear that he's going to be starting the next two games and Tyler Guyton's going to be going to the swing tackle. I think part of this has to do Landon that they play in four days. Guyton. If Guyton wasn't ready for this game, he has not practiced since he suffered the high ankle injury. He's probably not going to be ready for Thursday. And then you're just talking about one game left. I, I, I do wonder if it's not only a short term thing, but they're also viewing this in the long term like it is our best five offensive linemen keeping Tyler Smith at left tackle using TJ Bass. Maybe you pick up a free agent guard next year and then filling in, you know, maybe let Tyler Guyton be the right tackle next year. I, I, we've been talking about this for a while. Maybe they just feel like that's how they can get their best unit out there.
Landon McCool
Maybe, you know, it's, it's a little bit concerning though, because to me, like, I think we've made an effort to try to make that front stride of the pocket strong and I think that TJ Bass is a good guard. I think he's a guy that I wouldn't mind having exactly in the role that he was in, but I, I think, you know, long term there's a ceiling there with having him in the middle. And, and, and I think that there's also a ceiling to having Tyler Smith on the left side. And so I, I, I kind of had an issue with, with it on a, on, on a specific, the rest of the season situation, but I also kind of have an issue with it in the long term. I, I, I don't, I understand the thought process and I don't think it's going to produce a bad line, but I think that if you're talking about what's the potential for getting the best five ultimately, if everyone is able to kind of hit their potentials and work on their craft a little bit, I think it, it doesn't include Tyler Smith playing left tackle necessarily.
Marcus Mosher
But I wonder like next year, right? The idea is, hey, we're moving on from Terence Steele. Would you rather have like an unknown right tackle, you know, potentially with Tyler Guyton who struggled to stay healthy at left tackle, or would you rather have someone like Tyler Smith who plays a lot of football, he's only missed a couple of games because of knee tendinitis. You just figure it out that way and kind of the guards are more easily replaceable.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, like I said, I think that there's a reason that we preferred it this way in the first place. I'm not going to like, yeah, like, I'm not going to swap just because, like, you know, coaches are trying some stuff. To me, I understand why they're doing this on some level immediately and I don't necessarily love the idea of the long term solution there just because I think there's a pretty defined ceiling with those two players with those two positions.
Marcus Mosher
All right, let's talk about Matty Berfluse. We're also going to talk about Trayvon Diggs, who made his return to the field. And we didn't think that was going to happen at all again in the Cowboys uniform. We'll talk about that next. This episode is brought to you by Car Gurus. Not only was he activated, he was starting in this game after missing the last several months. First of all, we got a report after the game, Landon, that the reason he suffered a concussion was because he was mounting a TV in a pole, fell and hit him on the head. That's, that's the report. What did you think of that and the fact that he was on the field this week?
Landon McCool
All right, well, let's start with that first. Right? Like, we're not buying it. No, I mean, like, come on, like you waited four months and this is what you came up with, like, give me a break. And, and, and all the excuses of why it was this are pretty lame, too. So whatever, man. Like, I don't care, but, but don't think that I'm going to believe that story as to what, what happened. So, you know, as to the other thing, like, you know, I think there's a reason that you and I thought that he wasn't going to be playing for the Dallas Cowboys again. And, and look, I mean, I, I don't think the fact that, I think the fact that we got the kind of answer we got about the concussion thing is, is, is kind of representative of what the problem is here, right? Like a kind of a lack of clarity or communication on some, maybe what was supposed to be simple things that, that turn into big things because we're just not communicating properly. And, and look, I, I think Trayvon Diggs played pretty, pretty terribly today, and.
Marcus Mosher
I watched all of his coverage snaps this afternoon. He was awful.
Landon McCool
And, and, and again, like, I, I, I, he got interviewed after the game, and someone asked him about, you know, with a touchdown plays, and his response was like, cover two, cover two. And I get it. Like, you don't like playing that coverage. Like, but, but like, you, you don't, you know, you're a professional football player, man. Like, you're a professional cornerback. You don't just get to, like, you know, play because the coach called a coverage. You don't like. You got to go out there and play the coverage that's called. And, and like, you don't just, like, get to kind of throw your hands up, like, when, when you perform poorly in that and act like you, you don't have a hand in it because it wasn't the call that you wanted. Like, that's just not how this works. So anyways, enough about the, I mean, that's all I've got to say about the dig stuff.
Marcus Mosher
We don't need to talk about him. There's two games left. I think the Cowboys are just ready to move on from the personality. I think the only reason he played this week is because they're just running out of corners.
Landon McCool
Yeah, absolutely. You know, they're paying him a lot of money anyways, and Bland's, you know, foot situation kind of cropped up in a way that, you know, they didn't expect potentially, so they had to play him. Right. So, yeah, and again, he played awfully again, like he just said he did early in the season. So, yeah, enough of that Eber floose. Like, again, I I understand. And I think that there's a lot of people out there, you know, trying to kind of soft pedal this a little bit in the sense of, well, look at the. Look how the players are playing. Like, look how, you know, look at the. The performance, individual performances that are happening. And. And I'll give you, like, it felt like the rookie, specifically, like Sherman James and Siobhan Reel, had really hard times tackling today, and Savonarvell had, you know, a tough game overall. I mean, I think he. His technique at times was good and. And he just got beat in good plays. But there were other times when it was inconsistent and he looked like a rookie who's starting his fourth game or whatever it is. Right. So. But I think beyond that too, like, there's a point when you see your defense struggling the way it is and you see, you know, that there is an inability to get to the quarterback. That's the thing that really, really bothers me specifically is the biggest problem this team has without a doubt is, was getting to the quarterback. They could not get to Herbert, despite the fact that his offensive line is completely beat up and then got further beat up as the game went on. They couldn't do. They couldn't do it the previous week against Minnesota when, then that was the way they had to get JJ McCarthy to be was to just apply pressure. They just could not find a way to get pressure. And that's, like, inexcusable because to me, you know, it's not like, even if you can't get to somebody with four, you've got to start sending five and six guys, you know, that you don't have corners on the back end to cover these guys for long periods. How many times did we see, like, Herbert just standing back there and just waiting for guys to, like, improv their way open because the snap had long been over and. But there's still no pass rush on top of him. So, yeah, like, again, I think it's, you know, partly performance and partly you need guys to be better about rushing the pass and you need to better personnel, but you also have to have a defensive coordinator who recognizes that his team has no ability to rush the passer and then presses the issue because he's doing something too positive to try to save his defense, which, you know, it. It didn't help that he was in the booth. He didn't see that still. And. And that's, you know, incredibly frustrating.
Marcus Mosher
I. I was worried that Eva. Flu speak. We talked about this. I think last week that the Cowboys were playing three below average offenses to finish out the season, that he was going to string together three good games and save his job. Just watching what happened on Sunday and listening to Jerry Jones talk after the game, I don't think we need to be worried about Matty Eberfluss coming back in 2026. It feels like the hay is in the barn at this point.
Landon McCool
Right.
Marcus Mosher
They were atrocious. And I think the, the thing that was the most concerning is there's been multiple games this year where Justin Herbert's been pressured on 50% or more of his dropbacks. Yeah, their left tackle, Jamari Sawyer got banged up in this game with a hamstring. I don't believe he ever came back in. And the Cowboys Ed rushers, I believe, combined for four pressures in this one. It really feels like outside of Donovan as a raku, you need to replace an entire defensive end room in one off season and you need a defensive coordinator that knows how to scheme up pressure. And this is just an awful pairing right now when you have guys that can't win on one on one and you've got a defensive coordinator that has no idea how to create pressure outside of just having five man defensive line looks.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, he doesn't have the, the. He's just not designed as a play caller to scheme up these blitzes. And that's, I mean, that's look to his credit. It's not just like a lack of desire to do it. He just, he doesn't have a ton of blitzes in his playbook because he doesn't blitz a lot. And you know, if you want to call that an indictment on his inability to have a scheme, that's variety, that's has enough variety in it that he can call what you need to call in order to win the game. That's a fair criticism, I think. But I also think that, you know, again, this is a guy who got hired with, with the idea that he would have a Micah Parsons helping him rush the passer, which would kind of even things out across this defensive line. I think what we've learned since then is that just based on what we've seen so far this year, without Micah Parsons, this, this defensive line wasn't going to be enough even if Micah was here and this was going to be a bad defense even if Micah was here. So I, I think you're right. I think that the Cowboys need to make a lot of heavy investments in pass rushers in this season and then hope that on top of that, as A rock who also takes a nice hefty step in the off season.
Marcus Mosher
We're going to get to draft coverage here in the next couple of weeks, I promise. But this is like watching this game just got me back into the Twitter debates of why you can't draft an offensive lineman in round one. Like this year, your defense needs six starters, man. Like, it's, they are so far away from being, you know, a good defense. And you wonder with like, guys like Clowney and James Houston or so I think Houston's on another one year deal. But with like Clowney and Fowler, like, you're gonna have to replace almost your entire defensive end room. So the linebacker room needs a major upgrading. You probably need three new secondary players. It's, I just feel really discouraged about this unit and unless they go out and get a big time veteran defensive coordinator, I, I, I don't know, I don't know how much better we can expect them to be in 2026.
Landon McCool
Well, this is why you can't, you know, spend money on a free agent guard. Guys like you try to move this offensive line around. You got you. You've got to have that set in stone so that you can spend all your resources this offseason and improving your defense.
Marcus Mosher
Good point. All right, let's talk about some other notes from the game on Sunday, something to be a little bit more uplifting since we're being pretty negative. We'll get to that next. Welcome back to the Lock On Cowboys podcast. We'd like to talk. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day. Landon. I want to talk about some positive notes from this game. Ryan Flournoy had another really good game before injuring his knee. We don't know the severity of it yet, but he caught a touchdown. He caught another touchdown that was taken away by penalty. Not gonna knock him for that. So this could easily been a huge, huge game for him. You know, depending on this knee injury, we'll see how serious it is. But, man, it feels like you found your number three receiver and it feels like they need to find more ways to get in the football. I'll say this, it really felt like the offense took a major step backward when he was out of the game and they were using Mingo and Kevonte Turpin as that third receiver spot. Like they got nothing from those guys. Florida should be a big, big time weapon for this team moving forward.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, I think for me, you know, when Floy is in there, like, he's a guy that you're trying to get targets to now. And I think that that's, I mean, think about what you're saying there. I mean, you've got Pickens and CD Lamb. You know, normally you'd be just trying to give those two guys every single target you can, but Floy has just done so well with the opportunities he has consistently. You know, you just, you feel like you have to kind of work him the ball. And I think that's the big difference between him and Mingo or even when Tolbert was the wide receiver 3 or Turpin or any of these other guys is that. I don't. I think, you know, you had situations where both of those other guys are covered and you're forced to kind of throw it to your third wide receiver and you're sort of holding your breath that they would catch the ball and make the play. I. I think that now they're actually calling plays for Flannoy to get him the ball, and I think he's rewarded them for it. He, you know, look, I think you're going to figure out a way to get Pickens to come back next year one way or another. And you're going to feel really, really, really good about this trio wide receivers going into next year. And that's an exciting thing to feel positive about this offense is that there's room for this offense to get better without having to add a bunch of pieces to it this off season.
Marcus Mosher
Except for that first round running back. Once you get that, then the office.
Landon McCool
Yeah, of course.
Marcus Mosher
Let's talk about George Pickens. We. He had two quiet games, one bad game against Detroit, just a quiet game against Minnesota. Nine targets, seven receptions, 130 yards on a touchdown. I thought he was awesome today.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, you know, I don't know if you, anyone else heard the Fox post game report, but apparently he was terrible in coverage on defense just based on the way they were talking about his attitude problems. Yeah, it's, you know, look, it's, it's, you know, it's. This is George Pickens, right? Like we've seen, this is the guy that we mostly have gotten through the year. A reliable big play threat who scores touchdowns and gets a whole bunch of yards. And it's kind of at this point one of the main cog of your offense. You know, I think he had a couple of rough games where at least statistically, like you mentioned, one that was probably more than just a statistically rough game, but you know, another game in which he, you know, really, really well provided for the rest of the offense. So, yeah, I mean, Pickens is, is incredible. I think he's going to be even better next year with the, with the, you know, complete off season with, with Dak. I'm excited to see exactly how this passing attack continues in 2026.
Marcus Mosher
Anybody else impress you in this game?
Landon McCool
I mean, that's really good. Yeah, Dax always really good. Like he has to be really good or, you know, they're not doing anything. I don't know. I, I felt like Williams was battling a lot, but it was really kind of tough sledding in the run game. I just feel like they weren't getting a lot of movement up front at times.
Marcus Mosher
Can I, can I read you? Javante Williams is yards per carry over the last month? Yeah, it's actually let's, yeah, let's go from Thanksgiving and again there's been a lot of games in the stretch and he's banged up but 3.5, 3.9, 6.1 because he had a big run against Minnesota and ran well in that game. 3.8. And that's after him averaging like over five yards per carry in the first two and a half months of the season, you're seeing the effect of the Cowboys not having a capable, you know, second running back. I mean he's got 240 carries on his body this year. He's just wearing down.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean this is what I was, you know, I was talking about, what was it last week or two weeks ago where, you know, even if you were make to make the playoffs, which obviously that's not the case now, but like imagine if we made the playoffs. Like now you've got Williams kind of declining into the, it's the, the postseason which you know, is not uncommon. But like, usually you have like another guy to kind of counterbalance to take some of these carries off. And I think again I referenced DeMarco Murray and the issues that he had that one year. Was it 20, was it 2014? I can't remember the season.
Marcus Mosher
It was 2014. They needed to use Randall more that year.
Landon McCool
Yeah, that's what I mean. There's a lot of meat left on that bone, Marcus. How is he gonna get the meat off the boat? You know, I, I think that's the issue, right, Is that if you try to overload these guys by the end of the year when you really need them, suddenly they don't have the same juice. So you've got to find a way to, you know, keeps touches off his body throughout the season, not just, you know, give it all to a secondary running back at the end of the year. That's not what you want to do. You've got to find a regiment to make sure that you're hitting a target number of carries so that when you hit the end of the year, he's still running fresh. And that's when you start to light, you know, load him up like a Christmas tree. That's when you start to give him all the carries.

Traditions are a funny thing. They're why we tailgate in the pouring rain, wear full body paint and refuse to wash that lucky jersey. And just like in football, tradition is what inspires us at Tostitos to make our masa the traditional way, starting with whole corn kernels. No artificial flavors, colors or preservatives crafted for that perfect crunch. Tostitos tradition matters. Official chip and dip sponsor of the NFL.

Hosts: Marcus Mosher & Landon McCool
This episode of Locked On Cowboys focuses on Dallas’s third consecutive loss, a blowout defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. With playoff hopes extinguished and team morale visibly low, Marcus and Landon tackle what went wrong, the eerie lack of energy around the game, upcoming potential changes for the franchise, and standouts to build on for the future. Thoughtful analysis centers on coaching, particularly the fate of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, personnel moves, and silver linings on offense.
On Team Mood:
“This game felt like a microcosm for the larger season where it was just very much by the book 2025 Cowboys Problems… completely bad vibes at a certain point.”
— Landon McCool (04:48)
On Defensive Failings:
“You need a defensive coordinator who recognizes that his team has no ability to rush the passer and then presses the issue.”
— Landon McCool (17:49)
On Draft Priorities:
“Your defense needs six starters, man… I just feel really discouraged about this unit and unless they go out and get a big time veteran defensive coordinator, I don’t know how much better we can expect them to be in 2026.”
— Marcus Mosher (21:32)
On Flournoy’s Emergence:
“It feels like you found your number three receiver and it feels like they need to find more ways to get in the football.”
— Marcus Mosher (24:17)
