Welcome back to the Locked on Cowboys podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Your team every day. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day. I am your host, Marcus Mosher. He is Landon McCool. And on today's show, we are getting you ready for the Cowboys Week 7 matchup against the Washington Commanders. A pretty big game. If the Cowboys can win this one, they can get back to.500. They'd stay alive a little bit in the NFC East. One of the good things about this game, Landon, is it does seem like the Cowboys are starting to get a little bit healthier. Whereas Washington, they're going to go into this game likely without Terry McLaurin. They won't have Noah Brown. We'll see about the status of Debo Samuel, who did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday, who's been dealing with a heel injury. Dorrance Armstrong, their best pass rusher. He's dealing with a hamstring injury, likely to miss this game. What do you think?
Landon McCool
First of all, I. I know they're a division rival, but I'm still very much a proud papa that Dorrit's Armstrong is their best pass rusher. I mean, what, what. How far he's come, it's just incredible, honestly. But yes, he's injured, obviously, and, And. And it's. It's very. The Cowboys find themselves in a very unusual position. It feels like for themselves is they're the more healthy team going into this game. Right. It feels like the Cowboys, I mean, there certainly have been teams that had longer injury lists, but as far as like missing key players against versus their opponents, it feels like it's been at least not this season where the Cowboys have been on the, on the proper side of that. And, and so, yeah, it's, it is nice to see, not so much the, the, the Commanders injured, but it's nice to see that the Cowboys are starting to get some of the. Their guys healthy again. It sounds like we're gonna get Booker back. It sounds like obviously CD Sounds like he's going to be good to go with. He said, with no restrictions, basically. Which is.
Marcus Mosher
And we should talk about that. Yeah. CD Lamb, during a Thursday interview, said that he felt like he could have played last week against Carolina, but he wanted to give himself another week to make sure that when he was back on the field he was fully healthy. He's been. I think he was limited on Wednesday. He was a full participant on Thursday. It doesn't even sound like he's going to have a game status here for Sunday. How big of a deal is it going to be to reinsert CD Lamb into this offense? It's already been scoring a ton of points.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And first of all, I think it was what we talked about the other day, right, where, where he was probably pretty close to go against Carolina. They decided to just play it one week to win. They'll be at the home game on their home turf, you a little bit better footing. It's going to be enormous. Right. Like just having both of those guys out there against an outmanned and I, you know, no pun intended, defensive secondary for the, for the Commanders that is just not simply going to be able to keep up with them. I think we saw exactly what, what, what, you know, they, how they can be exposed with the Bears game. And, you know, Lattimore is just a shell of himself, which is, you know, kind of why I thought that trade was just a terrible idea in the first place. And, and I think you're going to see Pickens be able to focus on the outside. They're going to move CD Around. They were, you know, already the number one offense in football without, without CD in the last few weeks. So you add in their best player, you know, onto the, onto the offense outside of Dak, I would say, at this point. And yeah, I would imagine that the Cowboys are going to get an opportunity to real shine against what is going to be an Overmatched secondary without, as you pointed out, without their best pass rush.
Marcus Mosher
One of the things I talked with David Harrison from Locked on Commanders about on Thursday is that the overall team speed of Washington is really bad. They're just a slow defense. And now that you're getting back, CD Lamb, you have the commanders coming off a Monday night game in Chicago. Sorry, in Washington, that was physical. That came down to the last second. I feel like this is the game where the receivers are going to have to win. Like you're going to have to make plays after the catch expose kind of the middle of this defense. Bobby Wagner has been a awesome player throughout his NFL career. He's really starting to slow down. It's that middle of the field that they're going to need to attack if.
Landon McCool
They want to win this one. Yeah. And you know, honestly, I'm a little surprised because I understand that Quinn likes his vets and I understand the state of where the commander's roster is. But the other thing that, that Quinn's defense is built on is speed and the fact that they don't have that speed. I mean, Frankie Luvu is a, is a great athlete, but outside of that, they have a lot of older players at very key positions and it's starting to show. And, and I think that this was something that we, you know, we, we had talked about when we talked about the Commanders early in the season is that this defense was going to get old really quickly because they, you know, the several key members are 32, 33, 34 plus, and, and we're not talking about quarterbacks. Let's talk about defensive players. And that's not a good age to be, to still be trying to run, run around and making tackles on guys like CD Lamb and George Pickens. So.
Marcus Mosher
And you really feel it, you really feel it in these shortened weeks where, hey, it's six days now, you're going on the road to play a game in Dallas. That's where I would love. And we saw this last week for Chicago, like they basically ice this game by just running outside zone and tosses to DeAndre Swift. And the linebackers couldn't get there. Like they knew they were running the ball in the soaking rain and they couldn't get there. So I think this is a big game. If Kevonte Turpin can play, being able to make plays, you know, on jet sweeps, on screens, they're gonna have to run the ball as well. If they can run the ball on this Washington defense, they're going to move the ball up and down the field.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And I, I think they will be able to run the ball in this Washington offense defense. Just based on what we saw against Chicago as well, right. Chicago is able to move the ball. They got it outside. I think you're going to see lots of the, the kind of power, the pin and pull stuff, the outside. They're going to attack the edges. You know, without Doris Armstrong, it's, it's, it's, you know, it's going to be kind of pittance on the, on the edge there. So stay away from Allen in the middle and just run out to the outside and attack the edges. And I think that they're going to have success, especially for a group that's, you know, is older, like we said, and making them run and get, you know, them get their legs going like, it's just, you get them going physically vertically off the ball and then you hit them with play action over the top. And, and I think that it's, they're going to fold pretty quickly if you can just get it right and execute correctly.
Marcus Mosher
How do you think Dak is going to do against the Dan Quinn defense? Because this is a defense that he's seen for, what, three years in Dallas. He didn't get to play against Washington last year because of the injuries. It was Cooper Rush the first time around. Trey Lance in the second game. Any concerns about him and going up against Dan Quinn here?
Landon McCool
Well, I think it's mostly, I mean, Quinn's not gonna do something super exotic coverage wise. I think it'll be man coverage. So really it's about your guys beating their guys and it'll be cover three, cover one, you know, maybe some, you know, cover six stuff, but, but not a ton of different stuff. I think it's mostly just going to be about the Cowboys offensive line being able to sort the multitude of fronts that, that they're going to see. They'll throw a bear front. They'll be four man, five man surfaces. They'll blitz, they'll send twists, they'll do different stuff to try to get, you know, they don't have a talent, right. So what they're going to do is they'll throw the kitchen sink at the offensive line. Dak is obviously one of the most cerebral quarterbacks in the NFL, has seen it all, has certainly seen all of Dan Quinn's tricks. So I think, you know, if, if it's about getting your, your line set pre snap, I, you know, I think at this point we, we feel good about the, where we are with the offensive line and they're able to kind of sort that out. We' Booker, who, you know, struggled with some of the twists and stunt stuff, if he's going to be a little bit better at that, recognizing it, hopefully. But, yeah, I think Dak should be able to sort this out. And then ultimately, it's about the wide receivers beating man coverage, which I think, you know, in this situation, looking at who they're matched up against, they shouldn't have too much of an issue.
Marcus Mosher
We're going to talk about the Cowboys defense next, but going into this game blind, how many points do you think the Cowboys offense needs to, like, kind of circle to get to, like, what's. What's the target number here?
Landon McCool
I'm gonna say eight touchdowns, you know. Yeah, I mean, I think, like, it's got to be something. I mean, you know, I don't know. I think in my mind, 35 points is what you need to win this game. You know, I wouldn't. I would go for that. Like. And honestly, I know that sounds ridiculous, but I think that's the mindset. You need to be aggressive enough to play the brand of football that you're going to need to play in order for you to hold up your defense, even with the injuries that they. That they're. Washington offense has.
Marcus Mosher
I was going to say 31, but you're probably right. 35 is the number you got to get to. So that means how many. What's that? That's five touchdowns you need to get in this game.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And I think the reason I picked 35 is because I think you need touchdowns. So don't settle for, you know, getting that. That field goal at the end. That may be the one that. That. So I wanted it to be on an even seven score touchdowns, not field goals when you get down there.
Marcus Mosher
All right, let's talk about how the Cowboys can try to stop Jaden Daniels here in week seven. We will get to that next. This episode is brought to you by better help. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day. L let's talk about stopping Jaden Daniels. What's the best strategy here to slow down Jaden Daniels even if he's without his top three receivers?
Landon McCool
I think you've got to have a plan for Jaden Daniels to scrambler. Right? Like, I know we've talked about this before with, with Justin Fields. Obviously, Jaden Daniels is a much better passer, I think, than Justin Fields, but I, I think that you still really have to worry about, you know what, having a defense that's sound and we'll be able to contain him and having a plan for it because he's still scrambling at the highest rate in the entire NFL. It's 20 plus. They. They've reduced his 20% of his, of his dropbacks have resulted in him scrambling it. They do have. They have reduced his number of designed runs, I think in a, in a, in an effort to kind of limit the contact that he's getting. But I mean, you're still seeing it on a regular basis. He's getting absolutely blasted out there because he's not protecting himself at times when he's running money the ball. So I. But even despite that, when they, when he gets the opportunity and he sees an open lane, you're still seeing him take off at a high rate. So you need to have an answer for that immediately. And then outside of that, you've got to deal with what is a very well designed run game, you know, so you're gonna, they're gonna attack you a whole bunch of different ways in with blocking schemes, much like the Clayton Adams, you know, kind of situation. So they just are going to need to play sound football and play with proper leverage, which, you know, I mean, has been an issue. And again, this is all kind of why I think we're saying, hey, Cowboys offense, score 35 points, please.
Marcus Mosher
Well, you know, what's ironic about this week is we've been begging them to play more man coverage. This might be a game to play.
Landon McCool
Zoned again, it was just like the Justin Fields conversation right where we were like, yes, it's time to see play more man coverage. And then we're looking at the numbers like maybe not this week, maybe wait till next week. But, you know, and I think, honestly, I think you can do that even more so with the Jet than with the jets in this instance, because I think of the wide receivers that you're going to be facing, right, I think you have a better chance of, of dealing with, you know, the injuries are going to take a toll. We'll see who, which of these guys make it on the field and if any of the starting three wide receivers for Washington make it on the field, but whoever's left out on the field, like, maybe you'll have a little bit better success because you can play more zone and feel comfortable on a back end than you would if you had to face Terry McLaurin or any of these other guys.
Marcus Mosher
And one of the advantages to playing zone is that your defensive backs are looking at the quarterback, right?
Landon McCool
Eyes on the qb. Yeah, right.
Marcus Mosher
And that's kind of the point if you could have them keeping an eye on Jaden Daniels. Now, the downside is sometimes you can get a little too aggressive doing that and that opens up some big plays down the field. But I think that's better than having your corners turn their back to the quarterback and letting Jaden Daniels take off. Because I gotta believe Cliff Kingsbury without. We'll see again, we'll see. On Dibo Samuel, his status is still up in the air, but without Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown, they're probably going to use more of his legs and more of the running game to help this offense.
Landon McCool
Yeah, absolutely. And, and I think, you know, what they probably are not going to want to do is have to get into a, you know, shootout. I, I think if anything they would rather possess the ball, go on long drives, you know, but that's, that's going to be another part of the issue because a huge part of their offense is about tempo. So it, it becomes the whole Chip Kelly thing, right? Like can you, can you properly possess the ball with your run game? And, and, and if, if it comes down to, I mean with the Cowboys, they might be able to, but they're not. They may not have the same advantages they normally have against, you know, they'll kind of middling offenses, I guess, where they aren't being put into negative game script thoughts. So they may not be in a situation where they're forced to or they're able to play like fast and quick and they may feel like they have to go on longer drives just to kind of protect their defense a little bit. So it'll be interesting to see the kind of give and take that exists there with how the pacing goes with this offense. What their plan is, are they just going to, you know, full attack with all backup wide receivers and just going for it with this Cowboys defense? I mean, I don't think that's the worst idea because they haven't really shown. The Cowboys defense hasn't really shown an ability to stop anyone yet.
Marcus Mosher
Is this a game where you would like to see the Cowboys blitz more or do you want to see more contained pass rush to keep Daniels in the pocket?
Landon McCool
I, I think with, with, with again like with, with the less experienced wide receivers out there, I think you can get away with more of like a contained rush because again, to me, if you're power ranking the threats on the Washington offense as far as dangerous big play aspects, I, I think it's what Daniels can do in his, with his legs, whether it's escaping out of the front of the pocket and just creating a big play, you know, because he has great speed and it's tough to get an angle on him or if it's just getting out of the pocket, you know, into the flats and, and just creating new angles that are allowing guys to get open. I think the most dangerous thing is, is Daniels breaking from structure and, and what he's able to do there. So having a plan to contain that, which would be more of the kind of mush push thing and then, you know, sprinkling in blitzing, because I do think you have to change it up to keep him guessing a little bit.
Marcus Mosher
Well, and that's why I, I think I might be more open to blitzing because you've got young receivers, maybe they're not going to be completely in sync on some of the hot routes and all that kind of stuff. So if you can speed up the game a little bit for Jaden Daniels and some of these receivers, maybe that's where you get some mistakes. That's where you can create some pressure.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, honestly, it's, it's with, with, with inexperienced wide receivers. It just, it makes defense a little bit easier as far as what you can call because you're not as worried about getting completely burned on the backhand. Now again, maybe we shouldn't be saying this because we represent the Cowboys defense, which has been burned by everyone. So maybe they haven't proven with without a shadow of a doubt that they can do this even it gets back a wide receivers, but we'll find out. I mean, I, I think it gives them at least, at least a little bit of leeway to experiment with what they want to do a little bit more.
Marcus Mosher
I'm going to be interested to see if the Cowboys defensive tackles can take advantage of the interior offensive line. Now, Sam Cosby, their best interior guy, he might play in this game for the first time all year. He tore his ACL in the NFC championship game. We're still waiting to see on his status. But Tyler Biotish in the inside, like if you're going to win this game and your defense is going to get stops. Kenny Clark, OSA Digizua and Solomon Thomas, they got to play a lot better than they did last week against Carolina where they kind of got manhandled.
Landon McCool
Absolutely. Yeah. I mean they all need a bounce back game because the defensive tackle group has done pretty well for the early part of the season. Last week was, was really disappointing, not only for OSA but as you mentioned, Kenny Clark. They need to play better football this week because you need the Cowboys to control the line of scrimmage a little bit better. So you don't allow Washington going in the run game. You force the issue, force them into a passing situation with the superior. Superior, I'm sorry, subpar wide receivers that are going to be out there and, and, and that's probably one of the better ways. Force them into third and long situations where they have to throw the football or make Daniels, you know, make a big play. But as long as you got a plan for that? That should work.
Marcus Mosher

L let's wrap up the week by giving our predictions for this NFC east showdown. Who do you got?
Landon McCool
I'm picking the Cowboys. I, I think I, I, I, I, I think, you know, I, I wasn't ready to do this, but with all the injuries mounting for Washington, they're at very key spots and, and I think it's enough that that the Cowboys will will take the Edge here, especially at home. You got a lot of key players coming back. The, the tone of the sound of the way that they're talking about CD Lamb and, and how he could have played last week but they decided to shut him down makes me think that he's going to be fully good to go, you know, on Sunday. And I just think that they are, are, you know, compromised in a coverage situation. The defense is going to be, their defense is going to be rough too. And I think it's going to be enough that, that it's gonna, it's gonna be the Cowboys kind of bouncing back this week and finding a way to scrap themselves back into this race somehow again. And, and kind of the roller coaster of up and downs continue. So we'll see. But I, to me, I think that it'll be a close game, but I do think it's going to be a high scoring game. I, I, because I think neither one of these defenses are going to be able to say, stop each other. Well, stop the offense rather. So I'm gonna pick the Cowboys, let's say 35, 30.
Marcus Mosher
I think it's going to be high scoring because it's gonna have to be like, the only thing I could see here is where it's like both teams have these like six seven minute drives where, you know, it's just eight yard completion, five yard completion, seven yard completion, and then, you know, you're really limited on the number of possessions in the game. Having said that, I just think Washington's better. I just, I, this Cowboys defense is so bad right now that it just feels like such a win to get to third down. And that's when you know that you're in a bad spot, when you're just happy that you even got to a third down. I'll take Washington, but I don't feel great about it. I, I think these two teams are similar. Yeah, I cut. Oh man. I kind of think neither of these teams are playoff teams, to be honest with you.
Landon McCool
Well, yeah, I, honestly, I, I'm not as impressed with Washington, but this is kind of where I thought that they would be because again, the age issue is an issue for them. I, I also just think that, you know, you're just seeing them. You know, for some teams, the pace that they play at is very difficult for them to keep up with. But for the Cowboys, they play at a faster tempo at times than, than Washington does. So I think the defense is not going to be as thrown off by that. And I also think that, you know, the Cowboys with they're going to get some of these big bodies back. You're going to see this classic twin defense. You're going to see a bunch of 5D defensive back defenses out there. And I think that even in 11 personnel, because of the size of the Dallas offensive line and because of the, the changes in, in the kind of schemes that they're using, they're just going to be able to bully these guys in the run game from pass formations as well as run formations. And I think that that's going to help the Dallas offense control the ball a little bit better than the Washington offensive.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I think, I mean I, I could see that as well. I just. Part of me thinks that Washington's just gonna be able to run the ball like crazy. Jacori Crosby Merit was running the ball really well last week before a couple fumbles. He ran the ball really well in previous weeks.
Landon McCool
Yes.
Marcus Mosher
And I just. This Cowboys run defense has kind of progressively gotten worse and worse every week. It started out the season not awful and it's gotten worse. And I think teams have figured out like you can run wide zone on this team over and over.
Landon McCool
Well, I think, I think it's gonna help. But when they are not as having to commit nearly as much resources to stop the pass, I mean, you know, again they've been burned. Why wouldn't they stop the pass? But again, with, with the injuries to wide receiver, maybe you lean more into kind of scheming it up, doing more cover three stuff like we talked about zone, you know, so you have an extra man in the box to kind of help with the, the run game a little bit more and then make them throw the football to beat you. Which I again is a terrible prescription for what the cat. Since the Cowboys are so bad on past defense. But maybe in this particular game that is the way that you have to handle it. You have to trust that the run game is more dangerous if you don't stop it and then just take your chances with the passing.
Marcus Mosher
That's why I'd like to see the Cowboys be aggressive like on 1st and 10. Like if Washington's going to try to run the ball like send some run blitzes and try to get some pressure to get to some of these second and longs. Or Washington can either try to run the ball on second and long or you're, you know, you're throwing at a dis, you're throwing in a bad situation. Right. So I'm just, I'd like to see Matt Eber Fluss be aggressive on Sunday afternoon because what's the point of sitting back in these soft zones and getting picked apart all game?
Landon McCool
Yeah.
Marcus Mosher
Last thing is the word I was looking for.
Landon McCool
There you go. Last thing I'll say before we go is, is last week we talked. I talked about a lot, how Carolina was really good on first down and you have to win first down to beat this offense. Right. With Washington, it's second down, and I think it's good. You bring up a good point. You kind of need to win first down to get them into disadvantageous second downs because they're winning second downs at such a crazy high rate that they're not having to deal with third downs. Get. Get them into third downs and then you could win this game somehow.
Marcus Mosher

Theme: Can the Dallas Cowboys’ offense ignite against a depleted Washington Commanders defense? Can Dallas’ struggling defense get any critical stops?

This episode dives deep into the Cowboys’ Week 7 NFC East showdown against the Washington Commanders. Marcus and Landon break down the unique circumstances favoring Dallas—mostly health-related advantages and the Commanders’ defensive woes.
