I am Jeff Bigs and I am ready to start the holiday weekend with the Squad Show. Let's go.
Landon McCool
How about them Cowboys?
Marcus
It's the Cowboys Squad Everything.
Landon McCool
Dallas Cowboys every week covering all the big hits and game changing plays from America's team the way only the Locked On Podcast network can get ready and squad up. It's the Cowboys Squad show starting now.
Jeff Biggs
Yeah, I could have always said we could. We could squat up, right? That's go with that. Either way we're happy to be with you. Not quite Thursday Night Football, but definitely a Thursday night edition of the Squad show. And as I said, great way to kind of get the holiday weekend started. Hopefully it's going to be a great one for you. But we thank you for hanging out with us for another edition of this Cowboy Squad show. We start with a welcome to everybody that is with us tonight. We start with a co host of the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast, Landon McCool. We've got Aisha Morrison in the house with two eyes all over the place but with us tonight. Thank you Aisha. And we have former Cowboys coach Glen Stretch Smith. The one and only lots to get to over the next hour. Everything going on with the Cowboys. Some more comments from Jerry Jones who spoke again this week since we last did our show. Some funky rumors and even some advice. Some sage advice from the great Emmett Smith. But I want to start this show tonight with something that kind of struck me this week. You know, we've been talking the last couple of weeks about, okay, we have the draft, did the Cowboys do enough to improve the defense, where do things stand? I know Landon, you and Marcus did a show about maybe what are some of the things that the Cowboys can improve offensively, what are some things they can do this season, right? So we're talking about all these different things. And we had John Harbaugh jumping in the fray with a little trash talk with the Giants and how he wants to kick the Cowboys behinds in the, the Week one openers. We got all this stuff going on, but very kind of quietly, kind of underneath it all, it kind of struck me that, you know what, at the end of the day, it all depends on what the Cowboys do this season. None of the other noise and all the contracts and who signed and who didn't sign and what trade, none of that matters. At the end of the day, it's going to be how many games do they win, do they make the playoffs and hopefully can they go to the Super Bowl. And it just kind of hit me that, you know, I mean, Brian Schottenheimer, he's. He's the guy. Whether that's fair, whether that's right, whether it's wrong. I mean, he's, he's the guy, he's the head coach. It starts with him. He's going to be the one kind of pulling it together and, and pushing the right buttons and leading this team through some ups and downs and growing pains and all that over the, over the course of the NFL season. And I don't know, I just kind of, kind of hit me like, you know, this is kind of a big, big season for him. We're not really talking about it. I'm not trying to put any additional pressure on him, but I wondered if, if, if you guys agreed that, you know, he got the first season out of the way, got that under his belt. But, like, this is the season's kind of, you know, get a lot of outside national noise, given the Cowboys love, this is kind of the season's kind of a big deal.
Marcus
Not to be funny, you know, it is funny. What is funny is that you do. You do hear a lot of, of folks, you know, talking about the Cowboys and the improvements they made. And, you know, if you, if you listen to some of the more savvy tapped in, you know, podcasts that, where people like to dive a little bit, dive a little deeper on, on their team, Forecast that sort of thing. You hear a lot of folks talking about Christian Parker and about, you know, their excitement about seeing what this defense looks like, but you, you're not hearing a lot of folks talking about Brian Schottenheimer or the job he's done. And, and I, I guess part of me gets it because you know, the Cowboys record wasn't great last year. Obviously it wasn't a super successful season, but I, I do think that there was a lot that happened last season that does make me excited about Scheimer in year two. And, and I would even go so far as to say that like clearly there's enough that the Cowboys felt like he did well that they, you know, gave him similar kind of carte blanched with to rebuild the defense and the defensive coaching staff the way he did the offense and the offensive coaching staff the season before. So I do think it's, it's, it's interesting to kind of think about this coming season in the context of where Shoddy is in, in his career. But I, I do think it's time, you know, if you can figure out if you get the defense where it needs to be. It's time for, for Shoddy to put out a season that is about production. Right. It's about winning ball games and not just, you know, bouncing back in a, in a sudden rebuild because you traded away your best non quarterback, you know, just merely days before the regular season starts. I, I think now he's had a full off season. He's given opportunity now to rebuild both offense and defense. Now is the time for them to start putting, you know, putting the results down, actually producing in a way that maybe a little bit. Yeah.
Landon McCool
Oh yeah, yeah. What a se, what a, what a difference a season makes. Because I think the difference that I hear in the, the conversation is when you hear people talk about the Dallas Cowboys on, even on the national level, it, the focus is all on the defense for a reason. And because the offense was so efficient, the offense was so explosive. Brian Schneimer showed himself to be one of the best play callers in the game. And so as Jeff, as you talk about this being a big season, I think this is a big season for him as a head coach.
Jeff Biggs
Right?
Landon McCool
As a head coach. Because the expectation is to, you know, like Landon said, to try to get that jump on the defensive side because the structuring of it, he did have a lot to do with it, selecting Christian Parker and all these things. It has been, it's kind of known at this point that the Coordinators did have a lot of control in this draft. So I agree with you. To me, I'm looking at it as what is he as a head coach and how. What jumps does he make as a head coach? Trying to bring this whole thing together because I know he can call plays. I know he can call plays and call plays well, starting on his own five most of the time, you know what I'm saying? So with no turnovers, no nothing. So that's, that's how I'm looking at this season for him. And I think you bring up a very good point, Jeff, that we should be shining a little bit more light on what his year two jump is as a head coach.
Marcus
Real quick. It really doesn't even feel like he's getting very much credit for the offense stuff too.
Landon McCool
Too.
Jeff Biggs
Right.
Marcus
It feels like when I hear people
Landon McCool
just talk about it and just don't mention him specifically.
Marcus
Yeah, they mentioned the offense, they mentioned Dak and George Pickens and cda. But they don't ever mention, you know, what a good Schottenheimer done specifically. But so yes, I, I just wanted to. I think it's worthy to point out because I thought before the season started it was a tall order for him to be a first time head coach and a play caller and I think he managed being a really good play caller while being the head coach. Now I think each is right. It's about taking that next step as a head coach this year and see how he does.
Glenn Stretch Smith
What you got, coach, seven, nine and one, right. That's what, that's what they finished last year.
Jeff Biggs
Yes, sir.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Middle of the road. What sorts are over and under number this year? Nine.
Marcus
I think it's.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Yeah, middle of the road. So here, here's, here's what I believe is that you had an offense that set a lot of different records, got an offense that was very successful. Every defensive staff in the NFC east, along with every defensive staff that you'll be playing this year, has absolutely peeled back everything about your offense. They're going to know everything about your, about how you set your protections. They're going to have breakdowns on what you do formationally. They're going to have every different scenario from an analytical standpoint about which direction your back is going in protections, what you're doing. They're going to have it completely broken down. Okay, good. You had a average year, wins and losses. Had a better than average year offensively, worse than average year defensively. But you're going to know real fast whether he is a good Play caller or not, because you're going to see how defenses are going to have schemed what you did a year ago. And the question is, can you take your football team from what was a very average football team a year ago to what people are saying maybe a little better than average this year? Are you going to take your football team past that? Is there, is there, is there any, is there any movement past that? Because that's what's going to dictate what type of, of head coach you are. Because at the end of the day, no matter how long you look at it into the future in 2025 when you go Google up Cowboys record, you can do it 50 years from now and his first year, it's going to be 7, 9 and 1. That's what it is. So now what are you going to do to change and to get yourself in a position as a head coach to take your team past what is, I feel like average? They've upgraded the personnel, no question about it. Now what are you going to do between now and the end of training camp that is going to separate yourself from every other average guy that's out there?
Landon McCool
I would argue that when in regard to teams getting more film on the offense, we saw that about mid season, I think there were spurts, there were, there was a, well, maybe a three or four game stretch, maybe a little more where you could tell that people were picking up on some of the tendencies, specifically playing the tight ends. So I get what you're saying. And there's only so much adjusting that people can do in football though. So I mean even though people are going to can concept wise, get more, have more tape and more understanding, it's still going to be, can you beat it? Is my guy better than your guy? But I do agree as you look in the red zone numbers as well, Coach, to your point, they started off really well at the beginning of the season and then as they got down there, things got wonky throughout the season and you would expect that an offense, they were really, really, really good in between the twenties and then it was a lid on the red zone, as many trips as they were getting down there. So I agree with you, coach. People. Dallas, this is going to be a pivotal year for how this offense grows. But like I said before, and I think that all of you gentlemen kind of just summarized it as we're trying to see what type of head coach you are this year because I think because of how the defense was, I personally contextually are looking like, okay, it was crazy you know, it was, it was. It was a lot going on over there. But he's chosen this guy. This is responsibility now to me. I think you give him responsibility for last year, but this year is the year that I'm looking at, like, what's gonna happen? Who are you? And what do you want, you know, to be remembered as in your first couple years.
Marcus
There aren't things to fix, right? It's not like they're. I mean, you just mentioned it like they had red zone problems, they had penalty problems, and these are certainly areas where you need to see improvement. And I think coach is absolutely right. It's like, you know, they finished with a very average record, and they're projected to kind of finish with a. With a rather average record, maybe. Maybe a better, but better than their last average record. But I, I think that, you know, the hope is that this year, without getting kind of, like I said, handicapped right before the season and sort of handicapped by, you know, some of the injury situation, especially they had on the offensive line, it. Do you think that they can kind of use that to find improvement here and fight off aggression? Because that's the other thing you worry about. Whether that's takes the form of. Of defensive defense is getting smarter and catching up, or it's just about your luck turning from good to bad. Regression does usually find these offenses. Eventually, you know, the hope is, is that you've retained a lot of the same players. There's a stronger understanding of the offense going into the season on the offensive side and that you maybe potentially have a little bit health, a better health specifically on the offensive line, to kind of fight some of that off.
Jeff Biggs
Let me ask you this, coach. So when you go from one season to another, like this season into. From last season into this season, how much are you looking to improve and how much of it is, as you like to say, more of just being the hammer and not the nail and just cleaning up what you do, doing what you do, imposing your will and just. Just better execution of what you already do. Or are you trying to. To add even more to. To add some new things that. That other teams aren't familiar with or may not expect?
Glenn Stretch Smith
I mean, tendencies are. Are part of life, right? It just. That's just part of life. Tendencies, how people do things. You shower, you know, before you brush your teeth, after you brush your teeth. I mean, tendencies of what people do is. Is. Is very common. And so what you have to do as a coach is you have to stay away from whatever you're. Whatever your Tendencies have been. You have to be able to be flexible with those tendencies. Why do you think you hear. And you hear it on the TV broadcast now, second and 12, what do you hear the defense saying? Watch the screen, watch the screen, watch the screen. So tendencies with what you do and how you do is something you have to look at as well. So just like other teams are going to be studying what he does and how he calls an offense, he has to be looking at it, too, and he has to be thinking, okay, I can't fall into this where people are expecting me to do, you know, or think I'm going to do this out of every different personnel grouping. So I just think that at the end of the day, you're not the offensive coordinator. You're also the head coach. You're having to oversee every bit of it. And I think it's a very, very, very big deal. I mean, there's. There's not a lot of guys that can. That can wear both of those hats, and that's what we're going to see this year is, is he going to be able to keep an eye on what's going on defensively? Yeah, you hire a guy and know that you. You trust what he's going to do. But, I mean, as the head Coach, if it's third and 15 and your defense is out there, you better. You better be somewhat. You better be somewhat dialed into what the call is. Somewhat dialed into what your defense is doing. And we'll see as he grows as a head coach and grows into that role.
Jeff Biggs
Yeah, that's a good point. I'm just. I'm wondering, too, that I would hope, right, that here, season number two, at least from the offensive standpoint, that everybody should be comfortable. None of the. The newness or just maybe that little extra thinking about things or. Or think all that should be gone. Right? I mean, everybody should be in sync and on the same page and ready to go, you know, guns ablazing from day one. And then on the flip side, the defense, there'll be a work in progress, but that. That should be a full, fun process for them as they try to work it out and find spots for everybody. And there'll be a lot of competition because everybody will want to get in and want to be a part of it and want to get some playing time.
Glenn Stretch Smith
It's your. It's your job to know what to do. That's. That's why they call it pro football.
Jeff Biggs
Yeah.
Marcus
Yeah. I mean, at the very least, it's not like they're having to learn new language. Right. They obviously, at the very least know the language. But yes, I would agree that, you know, you know, the playbook is probably, I don't know, coach, 75 to 80% the same as it was last year. Maybe you add another.
Glenn Stretch Smith
They didn't change a lot on the off. I did. Was there a change on the offensive
Marcus
staff from last year? No. I mean, I, I don't think so.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I don't think so either. So what, you know, what you have is you have an established verbiage, you have an established cohesiveness with that group. What you want to see is, again, is you want to see the playbook expand from, from a year ago, and then you want to see retention in what you're doing because again, you're going to be playing on two different occasions. You'll be playing three games in an 11, in an 11 day stretch. You can't practice all of that stuff. There's no way to practice. And I know certain coaches that won't call a play unless they practiced it. Well, there has to be retention and you have to have the confidence in your guys knowing. Okay, look, we didn't, we didn't necessarily call this during the week, but look, we feel like we can, you know, we can get this done here in this situation, and you got to be able to revert back to those things.
Marcus
Yeah.
Jeff Biggs
All right. Well, we will see, but definitely a big season ahead, not only for the Cowboys, but for head coach Brian Schottenheimer. And I know he's, he's up for it. He's excited about it. And that's, that's half the battle right there. And we will see. And I think, like we've been saying from, from day one, since the season ended, we can't wait to see how this, this new defense and Christian Parker and how the whole staff and defensive unit comes together. So it's going to be good. But there's pressure, too. It's a, it's a results business. So we'll see. All right. When we come back, Jerry Jones spoke again this week and Emmett Smith espoused some advice as well that I want to share with you. Also, Landon, we were talking before the show, a lot of people coming up with lists. Like, that's a, that's a way to kind of, kind of kill content. Right. With lists. But I, I do have a couple that I want to run by you guys and I want to get a, I want to get a plug in too, for the, the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast as well. A lot more coming up. All right, great to be back with you. Cowboy squad show. That is Aisha Morrison with two eyes. We got former cowboys coach, the one and only GL Stretch Smith and the co host of the daily Locked on Cowboys podcast, Landon McCool. Great to be with you and again, hope you have a great holiday weekend. Kind of a sad note. I, I just really quickly got the note a couple minutes ago that Kyle Bush, the former NASCAR champion had passed away at the age of 41 from A, from an illness. Just our thoughts and prayers go out to, to him and his family and the NASCAR family.
Glenn Stretch Smith
That's just, well, how sad is that? He said, unbelievable. Racing a month ago in Watkins Glenn, and they said he called for a doctor, like, right after the race was over.
Marcus
Yeah.
Jeff Biggs
Unbelievable.
Marcus
That's so young.
Jeff Biggs
Yep. Way too young. Way too young. All right, so, so Jerry Jones does his, his radio hits. And I, I think we should say, like, a lot of times, if you're, if you're school scrolling around, right, and you see headlines with Jerry, Jerry says this or Jerry says that. I mean, nine times out of 10, Jerry's answering a question. I'm not shilling for him. I'm not apologizing for him. I'm just saying he's answering a question. He's not going out calling up the radio station saying, hey, can, can you put me on so I can say this really quick? I mean, he's, he's taking the questions that are asked. So he was asked again about the George Pickens situation and signing the tag and that whole thing. And I, I, I've done everything humanly possible to try to stay away from George Pickens. We need to give it a rest. But he made, basically saying that in a kind way that, hey, you know, George has an opportunity here. There were some questions about him, about his, his past, had a great season last season. He has a chance again to answer those questions and, and do his thing this season, which he's going to do, and they're looking forward to that. And then Emmett Smith spoke out, and I thought Emmett had some. Just right on advice. And Emmett said, you know, George, welcome. You're getting a taste of the business side of the NFL, and don't take it personally. Even though you are going to take it personally, but don't take it personally. And so that's kind of where we're at. But I thought that was interesting. And, and it sounds like, you know, I know we're, we're in the, the, the one side of the business, but it sounds like in real life that George and the Cowboys and Jones sounds like everybody's in kind of a good spot. Even I would think even his agent is kind of resigned to the fact that. Nope, look, he's just got to go out and have a great season, and the contract stuff's gonna have to wait.
Marcus
Yeah, I mean, it's, I mean, it's literally what we've been saying this whole time is that is that there's, in this specific situation, it's the, in the best interest of all parties involved for George Pickens to come in on and the mandatory stuff, come work out, be a good citizen, show that he's willing, hard worker, go out, produce the same way he did last year, and he's gonna make a ton of money. Like he's gonna, no matter what, he's gonna make a ton of money. He's getting guaranteed, you know, 28 million or whatever it is dollars this year as well. So it's, it's not like it's a terrible situation. I understand the, the uncertainty around the franchise tag and that a lot of players don't like it. But I also think that George Pickens has to know, or if he doesn't know, then like he needs to talk to his agent a little bit more, that he kind of dug himself into this hole a little bit with, with some of his behavior and that it's fine. But like, look, if you want to go make the money, you're going to have to go show teams that you're serious about improving and staying on the field and not being a malcontent after they pay you a bunch of money. They, these guys want to pay you a bunch of money, man. Go show them that you're worthy of it. And they will. I think, you know, it's, it's, it's a very rare different situation than a lot of these other players where, because, I mean, when was the last time there was a wide receiver who produced at the level that George Pickens did and no one's even sniffing at him when he's in on the non exclusive tag right now. Like no one's even kicked the tires in this situation. So he's got some goodwill to make up in some of these front offices. But I think if he does and he continues to produce the way he does, he's gonna make a truckload of cash. So just keep doing what you're doing and, and, and, and everybody will be happy and everybody will get a whole bunch of money.
Jeff Biggs
What do you think, Aisha?
Landon McCool
Oh, I was waiting for coach. I, he has something to say about it, but I, I don't think much about it. I, I'm happy that, you know, it does, it does seem like from what I understand that they do have this is, there's an understanding, things are fine moving forward. I'm just glad that this is kind of solidified as you go into OTAs and stuff like that. So. Yeah, I mean, it is what it is I'm, I'm just ready for, you know, the actual football stuff to start and, you know, to be there for him. To be there. No, just like. Well, you guys just talked about. We just, I mean, if we're talking about George Pickens, we, We should definitely talk about how we were talking about the offense and the offense continuing to be what it was last year. One of the things that was on your side last year was George Pickens health. I mean, he, he, he, because he was healthy, he was able to step in and be there and, you know, kind of fill in for CD to where your offense didn't meet. Miss a beat and you could compete in those games. He needs to be in shape. He needs to be, you know, ready to get touched on. You know what I'm saying? Like, we'll touch during football. My bad. I know how y' all mean people are. My bad. Jesus. But, but I know how y' all are. My bad. But he needs to prepare his body as well. So I'm glad. I'm just, I was hoping that he got in the install of whatever the change in the language is and all this stuff. I want him to be here. That's what I care about.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I mean, just like Emmett said, it, it is a business.
Landon McCool
Yeah.
Glenn Stretch Smith
The NFL is a business. And, and if you don't handle your business and you don't have every T crossed and I dotted and you, you want to be late for the meetings or times when you want to be a little bit late for the, the plane, whatever the scenario is, it's a business. And if you start, if you start in your personal actions, start taking away from the business. I mean, and I'm not saying that he is, because he's obviously a very, very good player, but be a player that does everything that you should do. And guess what? You're going to get paid. You are going to get paid. There's, there's, there's no other way around it. So I, I don't know why, you know, we should expect anything different out of Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones in the. Is in the business of making money. So what he's in the business to do, he's not in the business to say, well, I own the Dallas Cowboys and I can get on this radio station, and it doesn't really matter what my checking account looks like. It is a business, and you got to handle it that way. And I think really, Emmett's giving him a kind of a, kind of a brotherly talk, if you would, but it's A business and handle yourself like you're part of that business.
Marcus
Yeah, yeah. I think, I think the media, whatever that is, is, is the side that's making this the, the most out of this. I think every, I think, I think the Cowboys, Pickens and his agent all understand what this is and all understand what, what, you know, what needs to be done. And, and the reason I, I believe that is because traditionally David's agents haven't been signing the franchise tag when they've been assigned to it. And he signed it, you know, a little, it took a little while, but he still signed it.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Right.
Marcus
So I, I, I think that there's actually alignment here on, on all, by all sides on what's happening and why it needs to happen. And, and again, like, it's not even just that. It's, it's Garrett, it's, it's a year of guaranteed money while getting an opportunity to inflate his long term wealth. Right. Like, I think David's viewing it that way too. Like he gets his money based on a commission and he would rather have the bigger contract a year from now if, you know, if that, that money scales to the, the, the, the salary cap. So I just don't think anybody's losing in this situation by waiting one more year to see what he does because he'll end up making more money than he would have this year.
Jeff Biggs
Yeah, it's a win, win across the board. Absolutely. That's good. I'm glad, I'm glad that it worked out that way and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out on the field. Landon, do you ever go clubbing?
Marcus
Not, not in like 20 years probably, but yes, certainly at some point. But the Everydayer club. There you go.
Jeff Biggs
There you go. Walked right into that. There was the la OOP right there.
Landon McCool
I was scared for you, Landon.
Marcus
I was, I didn't know what was happening, to be honest. But yes, I am. I, I certainly enjoy being in the everyday or club. It's, it's a lot less bright lights and loud noises, but lots of more Cowboys football talk, that's for sure. Yeah. And, and listen, you get, you get ad free shows, obviously, but you also get the opportunity to talk to Marcus and I and we're gonna get, we're gonna drag coach in there. First of all, I'm gonna have to explain to him, you know, what Discord is, then we'll, we'll, we'll drag him in someday to get in on Discord and chat with some folks as well. But yeah, I, the Everyday club is. Certainly pays for itself just simply. Or not having to, you know, fumble through ads and listen to that. Especially if you listen to us every day, it just makes a lot of sense.
Jeff Biggs
I think getting coach in there would be worth the. That's to me, worth the price of admission right there. I mean, you get coach.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I think the next time you have that thought, you look down at your keyboard down there and take your right pinky and go up to the top of the keyboard. You see that delete key. Before you say anything, just hit the delete key.
Landon McCool
They. They gonna have to change the. The little rating on there. If coaches on there, it's gonna have to go on. It's gonna have to be infra. Mature.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Oh, my God.
Marcus
Yeah, they have.
Landon McCool
Yeah, it's gonna be. It's gonna at least be PG13 at the very least.
Jeff Biggs
That's fair.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I put my. Magpie. Hey, let me tell you, I work for espn. I put my Mickey Mouse ears on every day and think about what I say.
Jeff Biggs
Amen. Well said.
Landon McCool
We're proud. We proud.
Jeff Biggs
That's right.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I don't. I don't know how to. I get on here and I don't have to wear those mouse ears, so I don't have to. But hey, I'm. I'm. That's something I'm working on. I promise you. I'm working on it every day. I'm a Christ follower in it. You know what? That's a simple mind trying to express itself. But sometimes you know what? It just. It just. It just comes out. I can't. There's not a lot I can do about it.
Marcus
I'm gonna try to get him to follow me onto Discord one of these days and we'll see if we can. We can get him on there for
Glenn Stretch Smith
folks, what's a password to. Wait, I gotta get a password to get into every day.
Marcus
We're live on the Internet right now. You want me to just say passwords out loud?
Glenn Stretch Smith
What is it? Ou812.2. What is it?
Marcus
Listen, we all clearly know what your password is. You keep telling us every single week.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Watch that all the time. Come on in. I hear you knocking. Come on in.
Landon McCool
I can come on in. Is crazy.
Jeff Biggs
Landon, thank you. I'm. I'm trying to come up with new ways to. To get. I'm working with the everyday air club, so thanks for playing along.
Glenn Stretch Smith
You can tell what kind of golfer he is. He doesn't want you to tee it up for him. He'd rather.
Marcus
He'd rather give Him a. You can see it up. I'm gonna swing and miss twice before I finally hit it. That's the problem.
Glenn Stretch Smith
One thing is you. You caught yourself. Have I been a clubber? Not in about 20 years. Oh, I know where he's going with it.
Landon McCool
I was landing. I don't care if you. Man.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Memorial Day, right? That's right.
Marcus
I need this long weekend. Yeah.
Jeff Biggs
Amen. All right, I'll tell you what. When we come back, I'm gonna. I'm gonna throw a list at you guys, and we'll kind of. We'll kind of get back on the rails here, and we'll see. See if we get any good. Is Carmine with us tonight? I. I can't go to the comments because he is.
Landon McCool
He is hurt from laughing at y'.
Glenn Stretch Smith
All. All right, New Jersey. Are you kidding me? Is he with us? That guy's magna cum laude when it comes to Cowboys.
Landon McCool
Get him off of the camera.
Marcus
All right, Jeff, go to break. For God's sakes. Give me a second.
Jeff Biggs

Jeff Biggs
All right, we're back. Cowboy Squad show that is Landon McCool, Aisha Morrison and Glenn Stretch Smith. Great to be with you on this Thursday night. Don't forget to check out Landon and Marcus on the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast. And a reminder, because Monday is Memorial Day and again, we hope you have a great weekend. We will be with you on Tuesday night next week. Tuesday and Thursday, not Monday and Thursday. All right, so I've been looking around and like we talked about jokingly, there's a, there's a lot of lists that are going out there now. Oh yeah, draft is over, free agency is pretty much done. So now we've got these, these other lists for, for teams individually. So one of them I came across and I, I forget where it was. I'm not trying to not give them credit, but it was a list of the top three Cowboys who are on the bubble heading into training camp. So here, here's the list and I'll
Marcus
see what you're cutting. We're cutting folks in May.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Not, not.
Marcus
We're going to the Super Bowl. It's like, let's get ready to cut some folks in May before.
Jeff Biggs
Here's a tease. Before I give the list, would you say it honestly? I'm being really, is it fair to say that roster spots are going to be at a premium at, I mean, do we feel like we have too much? Is there too much?
Marcus
I, I do think that, that, you know, Marcus and I did like a kind of a depth chart update show on offensive and defensive side. And the one thing we did kind of come up with is, yeah, I, I, I, they're, they're gonna have some interesting, you know, injuries will always sort this out with training camp and, and you know, they'll be fine. But I do think that they're gonna have some interesting roster construction conversations to have now that they've kind of playing with the different defense they're gonna have. It feels like they're gonna have more players on the defensive side than they normally would have because they're trying a lot of different things and they're gonna be kind of a multiple defense. So how does that interplay with, you know, the, how many like, are they gonna take maybe one less offensive lineman than they've taken before or, you know, that just as an example, it's going to be interesting to see how the 53 man roster like ends up simply because of, you know, a number of factors, including the fact that you're completely changing defenses and that it's more multiple and it might require maybe a couple extra players than it normally would.
Landon McCool
Give us the list. Jeff, I'm curious.
Jeff Biggs
Okay, you ready?
Landon McCool
Watch us be like, yeah, he gone. Watch.
Marcus
I know, it's interesting.
Jeff Biggs
Okay, you want me to go from the bottom to the top kind of.
Marcus
Okay, so. So this is like mo. Like. Yeah, if you went from bottom, bottom, you would say least likely to. To be in roster.
Jeff Biggs
Right? And then the most likely. Yeah, the last one will be the. The most likely.
Marcus
All right, let's go, let's go. Let's. Let's hear that order. Yeah.
Jeff Biggs
Okay. Least, like number. Number three, Jonathan Mingo. The receiver.
Marcus
Yeah, I mean, I think Mingo's the name that makes sense. Right?
Landon McCool
I told you that. You gonna be like, actually, well, no, of course.
Marcus
Listen, I. I certainly believe that they're going to come up with names that we. We believe. I just am like, kind of recoiling. Like, normally in May, it's like, you know, like, optimistic. Optimistic. Like top five guys you break out or now we're like, we're talking about who's getting cut. You know, it's like, anyways, Minko is certainly a name that. That should be on this list. I mean, I think, you know, they traded for him. He's been given a lot of opportunity. This is now his second team that he's been given chances to kind of, you know, have an opportunity, have an opportunity to play with. And, and listen, like. Like I was just saying, because of the changes in the roster construction of. Of how they probably will, or at least it's assumed there could be some changes because of the new defense. You know, are they going to keep less wide receivers if they keep less wide receivers? Or is the position that he's competing for specifically a down roster? Probably wide receiver five in this case. Right. Because they're going to keep obviously the top three guys. They're going to keep Turpin, it seems like. Unless they don't. Right. But. But Turpin kind of have. Has his own little role, right? So it's more like wide receiver five that he's competing for. And it's like, does he play enough special teams? Like, is he going to be rosterable? Like, enough to do the job, or is he still.
Landon McCool
That's where. If he gets in. That's where he gets in. Somebody like Mingo, just because of the body type and, and the things that I did see him do a little bit on special teams. He is a willing blocker. He is a guy. He's athletic. But to your point, like, there's only one. But there's also only One ball. And I, I understand, I understand kind of how things felt for him last year, but nah, like, I agree, like he gonna have to come on with it because even some of the down the roster guys that they brought in are, I mean, I guess at this point, what is, who's he competing with? Scantling.
Marcus
Holden and, and you know, Scantling. Yes. MVS is probably more just like a veteran body, I would imagine because he can't. He's not gonna play special teams. Like.
Landon McCool
No, he's not. I would assume, but I would assume that. I mean, we're working off the fact that Ryan Flournoy is wide receiver.
Commercial Announcer
3.
Landon McCool
Yes.
Marcus
Yeah, yeah, obviously, yeah.
Landon McCool
Coach, do you agree if you have
Glenn Stretch Smith
a guy like, if you have a guy like Noah Brown who is on the street riding now, who is a special teams player and who will block the crap out of you. Okay, now you gotta, now, now you got a real discussion there of it's. He's not going to be, he's not going to be in the top two. I mean, I think Floroy has separated himself from what Mingo was and so sorry to bother you. And so now you got to get somebody that can somebody or somebodies who, who are special teams guys. That, to me, that's the key and that's where you start talking about, when you start talking about construction of who you're going to keep and who you're not going to keep because it's also got to be an issue of receiver, secondary, running back, linebacker. I mean, you got to have those guys who can, who can contribute to, to, and heavily contribute to the special
Marcus
teams tied in too. You know, just because you've got to have a couple of those bodies and, and you're going to need those guys to play special teams, especially with the changes in the kickoff rules. Right. They're not, they're not running as far. So, so they, they're, you know, using a lot of these bigger bodies on, on kickoff, kickoff rundowns. And so guys like tight ends can be that kind of those middle down, down the field guys.
Landon McCool
So what you got, Jeff? You got a tight end on there.
Jeff Biggs
I do. It's funny you say that. Landon, number two, Luke Schoonmaker on the bubble.
Marcus
Yeah. Again, like, I mean, it makes some sense. I mean, I, I don't know if he's in danger of being cut necessarily, but I think that he's maybe in danger of losing his spot as tight end too. And I think, I mean, it may, I mean, honestly, that could almost be Assumed to be gone by the end of the year.
Glenn Stretch Smith
There'd be interest for him if you traded him.
Marcus
Maybe. Yeah, I think you're not wrong, but
Landon McCool
I think you're back.
Marcus
I mean something. Well, maybe you could do a player trade. Honestly, what would I want back?
Glenn Stretch Smith
Is that the question?
Marcus
Yeah, I think you, I, you could get, you could get that. Let's say you get through training camp or halfway through trading camp and Jaden Blue is not doing what you need him to do. Right. You, because you need Jaden Blue to be that kind of other dimension to your running back room. Even if you go out and get another veteran guy or if Mafa hits as like your true running back too, you need a, like another angle element to your, your running back group. I think you could trade Schoon Maker for a decent, you know, scat cop back type player that's not like, you know, you're running back one, but is a guy who come in and be a little bit more dangerous as a receiver. A guy that you know can be excited with the ball in his hand. I think that's, that's a possibility. Especially in this league where everybody's rushing to play play more. 12 and 13 personnel, they're, they're trying to put more tight ends on the field. Schoon Maker isn't a, isn't an elite player, isn't a great player.
Jeff Biggs
But he's, but he's not a rookie.
Marcus
But he's, but he's not a rookie. Yeah. And he's, and he's, and he's reliable in a lot of ways. He's maybe not a guy that you want to be the focus of your passing game, but if you, but if you're looking to get a second or third tight in out there, he certainly could do the job.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean and being a, being a high, I mean a top three round pick is important in the conversation. I just in regard to this Dallas offense. It's just we, we were sitting here all last year, there was an opportunity for somebody to take that tight end two spot. It was just sitting there dangling in the wind and nobody took it. Nobody took it. I mean, and this is again, this is working off the fact that Brevis Span Ford was dealing with that high ankle because I remember you were there, Landon. I was there. That tied in two spots. Seemed like it was in the bag for him because he is a guy that will do the dirty work. I, I would argue that he might have been one of your best gunners on game day as a Special teamer in Brevin span forward. When he did get the few opportunities to catch the ball, he showed off some of his athleticism. I personally think if he doesn't get tripped up with his ankle. Ankle injury. To your point, the tight end two spot is solidified. And so as far as scooning goes, I don't care who does it. I think to your point, we need somebody that can relieve. I can relieve Jake Ferguson when he needs to get a breather. And you need another tight end. That's threatening because if Landon. You watch the film, coach, you watch the film. People aren't threatened by Luke Schoolmaker when you're in these personnel packages. They're rolling coverage to other places. So I, I want somebody. I'm hoping that whomever it is that steps up in the tight end room can do it, but he hasn't shown it to this point. This is a pivotal camp for him. He can't say, ouch. He can't have an injury. I don't think that he can. He has the room for it this year.
Marcus
He really's got to catch the ball, too. That's the other thing, you know, and
Landon McCool
that's a whole nother conversation because in, in from what I understand, there was some frustration with the drops.
Marcus
Yeah, because he was given opportunities. Look, they, they tried handed him tight end too, at a certain point. Like by the end of the year, he was taking 50, 50 snaps, if I'm not mistaken, with scooning. So. And, and they gave him opportunities because he's a different body type than the rest of the guys. He's a, he's a bigger body and I really think he would be valuable in the red zone. But he was given several opportunities and he made some drops that he didn't convert those catches. He has got to find a way to convert those catches because, look, if you're going to be tied in two, you're only going to get 15 or 20 targets in a season, probably. Right. Unless there's an injury and you have to step up and start playing, you know, so you got to make the most of those opportunities because usually when the ball is coming your way, it's because everybody else is so completely covered, you're wide open. And if you just catch the ball, it's probably a 15 or 20 or touchdown play because it's, it's usually almost a misdirection because of, you know, the fact that you've got two other Pro bowl wide receivers and a guy that everyone knows. Dak likes to throw the ball to.
Landon McCool
We watch Florida, we watched Ryan Fillino do that over and over and over again. One of the most efficient wide receivers in the NFL. On third down, he was. Because he was just ready. So I don't have.
Marcus
He was the other guy on the field with CD Lamb.
Landon McCool
I don't feel that I don't gotta come on with it. Yeah, you gotta come on with it. This is a pivotal year for him. He gotta come on with it. What you got, coach?
Jeff Biggs
Yeah. What does the tight end coach think about the tight end room?
Glenn Stretch Smith
No, I mean, you know, everybody, everybody in today's game wants, really, you need three tight ends on the roster, but because one guy goes down, you still got to be able to. You still got to be able to balance a defense or give the threat of balancing the defense with, with a, you know, 12 personnel. Look, the other thing is, is if that guy can be smart enough where you can move him, where you can bring him into the backfield and maybe do some stuff from a protection standpoint, that's a whole nother. I mean, that opens up a whole nother avenue for what you can do with, with play calling. So, I mean, you know, you want smart guys that can understand how to get on the move. You want guys who can read coverage coming off the football. And, you know, everybody wants those guys. So that's why I believe that, you know, if he, if he in fact gets caught up in a numbers game being soon Maker, if he gets caught up in a numbers game, you'll have some. There's value there. You're not going to have, have to cut him. You'll.
Marcus
You'll get.
Landon McCool
Oh, yeah, no, yeah. I, I don't think he's gonna get cut this year.
Marcus
I, I do feel like that there's like a, like a vibe in the, the zeitgeist that like Schoon Maker is a, is a bad player. I don't think that that's the case. Like, I think SK Maker probably isn't worth the second round pick that he was taken at. And I think that's fair. I think he's not taken over the tight end one position like we hoped. Despite the fact that, let's be honest, Ferguson hasn't exactly torn the league up the way that we hoped he would the last two years. But I still think that Schoonmaker is a rosterable NFL player. He is an average NFL tight end. And, and honestly, that's not a, that's not derogatory. That's, you know, that's, that's a. That's a positive thing to have on your football team.
Landon McCool
Yeah.
Jeff Biggs
All right. I'm gonna take our real super short final timeout and when we come back, I will reveal the name that was at the top of the bubble list. We'll do that when we come back. On the Cowboys squad show.
Commercial Announcer

Jeff Biggs
All right, so we're talking about the Cowboys roster, roster spots at a premium before we get to training camp. And a list has been floated out of three Cowboys that are potentially on the bubble. According to this column that was written. We mentioned Jonathan Mingo, Luke Schoonmaker, and topping the list, defensive end Sam Williams signed a one year deal for this season. He's on a one year.
Marcus
Yeah, I mean, that's, that's just an interesting name to put in there because it's, I mean, he's on a one year deal. It's not like he's a established player or a rookie. So it's. Yeah, I mean, I think it's implied if you're signing a one year deal that isn't for kind of big money. I can't remember what he signed for, but I think it was like three and a half million or something. Something like that. I, Yeah, I, it's, it's. I think it's pretty heavily applied and especially because of all the other players at that position. I think it's, it's gonna be. They, they still might need more talent there. I, I don't know. We. We'll find out more as we get into training camp, but they've got already a lot of numbers at the spot, so if they do go out and get somebody. Yeah, I, I certainly think that Sam Williams could be one of the first names that could potentially be on the chopping block.
Glenn Stretch Smith
You know, it'll be interesting to see how Sam Williams fits with this defense. I was, yeah, I think he was absolutely somewhat of a, he was somewhat of a fish out of water in, in what Matt Eberfluss was expecting him to do. I, you know, when Zimmer was here, I mean, I saw some things out of Sam Williams. Yeah, he's got some big upside. So, you know, I think you're going to camp. And he, he, in my mind is the number one guy that needs a fresh start. He needed a fresh start. And you know what? He got one. So he ought to be, he ought to be thinking his lucky stars because he, he needed. And guess what? I think he's a good football player. I just think it took Zimmer a little time to get to him with what he wanted to do with him. And then I don't think he fit at all in with what they were trying to do last year. But, I mean, I'm sitting here on the 21st of May. I don't know what the hell they were trying to do last year either.
Landon McCool
That's funny
Marcus
he even talked about it. This is a return to the defense that he was playing at Ole Miss, right where he was kind of standing up more and playing more, kind of wide.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Move around. Yeah, that's what he is, a move around guy.
Marcus
And I've, and he's been on my list, and that's kind of why I, I, Yeah. And Carmine just said, I'm done. I get it, man. Like, I, I've been on that, that name, you know, as a guy that I felt like, you know, he's just, he's got so much talent, you know, he's, he's explosive. He's like, he's, you know, he, he, he produced at a high level in a tough spot in Ole Miss, in sec against.
Glenn Stretch Smith
That's the thing.
Marcus
You don't play.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Yeah, I'm sorry. That's the thing. You don't play in that league. You're not, you're not as productive as he was in that league unless you've got a skill set now. How do you tap into that?
Marcus
It's different. It would be different if he had that level of athleticism that he does. And like he had only, like he had like eight sacks in the Big 12, right. Or, or he had no production and he was just this athletic. But that's not the case. Like, he had like 10 or 12 sacks his last year at Ole Miss at 21 years old or 20 years old or whatever it was. And, and as a supreme athlete. So it just felt like every year was, I see it at times. And then he does something like he's the gunner on the punt team, which is at £260, which is ridiculous and shows you the level athleticism. But then he does a boneheaded thing like misses a tackle or forces a fumble and then doesn't fall on the ball or whatever. I mean, there were so many just like super unfortunate plays that he was at the center of that. I understand why people were just like, I'm done with this guy. But he's a supremely talented athlete, and if the Cowboys could just find a way to unlock it. I really, really do believe that he has that kind of mixture of athleticism and skill set. He just has to use his hands. Honest to God. If you go watch his tape last year, it seems like he literally forgot how to use his hands because he would just get off the ball, incredible. Get around the corner, then he would just start. He would get caught up on the. On the offense, on the blocker, and not like ever try to break himself free. He's never throwing a chop or a swipe or trying to get under. So I. I'm hoping that with the more wide nine stuff, he's going to be able to get there with a little bit ahead of Steven. At the very least be able to use some more speed to power moves and then hopefully also, you know, learn to get his hands in front of his face at least or something.
Landon McCool
Yeah, man. Speak to Powers where he thrived when he was at Ole Miss as well. It's kind of was his calling card. You guys kind of talked about his collegiate career. I mean, he didn't start playing football until, I think, high school, middle of high school.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Yeah.
Landon McCool
I'm not mistaken. So he came into the league just an incredibly raw player. And he, like coach said about him having a fresh start. He's had to go through multiple coaching staffs asking him. It's already hard to transition, but you got a guy that's been pretty raw, really, to the game of football in general transitioning. I agree with coach. I think this is a good fresh start for him and an opportunity and it is the numbers game with him as well, but I think it works in his favor a little bit more just because of the athletic profile and obviously Dante Fowler going to the Seahawks. I wasn't sure if Dallas wanted to resign him or not, but they still are going to need depth in that room regardless. Like, it might seem like a lot of guys now, but I think once we look at it at once the season starts, it's going to be a little bit heavier in those rooms because of the rotations and the looks and stuff. Like that so, so I'm hoping BT
Marcus
Jordan helps him here too, don't you think?
Landon McCool
Oh, no, absolutely. As you talked about the hand tech, that's immediately what I thought about is, you know, BT Jordan is a gentleman. That's the kind of known for that. And so I'm, I'm looking forward to him developing as a player. I've always thought how y' all thought is the, the talent is there, but he just, you know, sometimes it's just the processing isn't there. And so how can you put those together? Maybe this scheme and there being some familiarity with it helps him this year
Jeff Biggs
and I would think too for himself, I'm sure he sees kind of the writing on the wall, that he has this fresh opportunity and experience, but he's, he knows he's got to make the most of it, you know, so. All right, real quick before we go, I'm gonna just throw a few things out and you guys can jump in on any one of them that you want. How's that? Because we don't have time to go over each one individually. So just a few notes that have come up. Just got the breaking news that the Cowboys opponent For week 15, the Rams, they have given Matthew Stafford a one year deal worth 55 million. So not more than Dak. Dak still gets the 60. Stafford takes 55. You know, we talk way, way back in the beginning of the off season about linebacker options for the Cowboys. And one of them we thought might be a possibility was Jack Campbell. Because the Lions didn't pick up his fifth year option. Well, they just resigned him to a multi year deal in Detroit. So he's not going anywhere. And there was a, a photo that was out. It went viral, but then it turns out that it was a fake. So just a reminder, you got to be careful what you see and what post you read, but there was a picture of Alvin Camara wearing a Cowboys T shirt and got. Everybody got kind of excited about that for a while. But again, it was fake. So. Yeah, there you go. Those are my notes heading into the holiday weekend.
Marcus
Wasted AI on that, huh? Yeah, it's good.
Jeff Biggs
Good picture though. He looked good. He was on a beach, so.
Landon McCool
Oh my gosh.
Jeff Biggs
So no Jack Campbell and Alvin Camara's gonna stay with the Saints and Matthew Stafford got paid, so there you go.
Landon McCool
Yeah, Matthew Stafford gonna keep getting paid because ain't enough good quarterbacks in the league. But that's a whole show for a whole nother day.
Jeff Biggs
That's right.
Marcus
Until that back gives out.
Jeff Biggs
Get away Atlanta, before we go, what do you and Marcus got coming up on the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast?
Marcus
Yeah, I mean, you know, we're trying to find some interesting topics to talk about because the Cowboys are not providing very many right now. But look, I mean, one of the things that we wanted to actually, now that we do have the time to do so, we're gonna have a kind of a deep dive in, you know, the mica trade. And now that we have, you know, at least the, the, the results, right, we can have some conversations about, you know, I don't know if the conversation is, was it worth it? But what did the balance sheet look like?
Jeff Biggs
A bit little.
Marcus
A little more now that we've stepped away from the situation. I'm sure we'll kind of re examine that more and more as we go out through the, through the years. But I think this was a, this was a good point to kind of take a second evaluated state where we are with the whole situation, and then it'll be a historical document to revisit some point down the road.
Jeff Biggs
All right, well, we will look forward to that. I know I will be. So thank you for that, Landon. Aisha, I know you got your shows coming up. We'll look forward to those as well. Correct.
