I'm Jeff Bigs, host of the Locked On Cowboys Squad show and I would like to see the Cowboys step up at home like the Browns did and beat the Packers.
Marcus Moser
And I am Marcus Moser, host of Lockdown Cowboys and I would love to see Michael Parsons back with the Cowboys but that's not gonna happen.
Landon McCool
I'm Landon McCool at the Locked On Cowboys Podcast and I would just like to stop talking about Micah Parsons.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I'm Stretch and thank God you got a great field goal kicker because you're not. You would be 03 without him.
Jeff Biggs
All right, that's. That's the way to do it. I just. The only thing missing is the music and the intro bed and I X'd it out so I could do that and now it's gone. So I will find that out and we will get that set next week and we'll do better. But it's great to be with you. Welcome to the Cowboy Squad Show. Great introduction. That was truly an intro that did not need an introduction but welcome to another edition of the Cowboys Squad show as we get ready for week four for the Cowboys as they set to host the Pack on Sunday Night Football. And of course you know who today's episode is. Brought to you by FanDuel right now, new customers can bet just $5 and if your bet wins. You'll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. We've introduced ourselves. Coming up on the show this afternoon. This evening, the very latest with the Cowboys final thoughts on The Unbearable Week 3 loss in Chicago and, of course, more injuries. But, guys, let's start with you, Marcus and Landon, because we haven't spoken. What were your final takeaways from the Windy City blowout?
Marcus Moser
I never want to think about that game again. That's my takeaway. What an ugly performance. It didn't have to be that bad. There was a point in this game where it was 1414, and then things just got out of control for Dallas. And whether it's, you know, the CD Lamb injury, the defense not being able to stop a nosebleed, whatever it was, it was an ugly game. However, there's lots of ugly September football that happens across the league. Some of the best teams in the league lose in September. I remember last year, Philadelphia had a really ugly loss to Tampa Bay, and they still went on to win the Super Bowl. Not saying the Cowboys are going to do that, but now you've got to flush it and get ready for kind of your season here in Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, I think my initial thought was it. It felt like an inflection point on the season. You know, it felt like a point in which you could either, you know, take this and really kind of start rolling downhill and you go into the packers game and you can, you know, get blown out at home and things could really start to. To feel. To start feeling bad and sour around here. Or you could take this as a. As a opportunity to kind of overcome some of these odds, at least play the packers tight. I think we're going to learn a lot about this football team this coming week.
Glenn Stretch Smith
You know, I had to go back and watch it again. Right now, I think I lost right at six points off my football IQ from having to painfully take another gander at a secondary that it is lost, guys. They're lost. They are. Completely. And the more I look at it, the more it, you know, the more it just. It's not a good watch. I. I'd like to think it's correctable, but when I've seen it two games in a row, something tells me that it. Either they're not letting the players know what's expected of them, or the players are not hearing the voices that are in the room. I'll let you guys decide which one it is.
Marcus Moser
Jeff, I. I call this upcoming game it's the apple picking game. And this is before I started covering the Cowboys. But this is. If you lose this game now in week five and week six, you can tell your wife, yes, I can go apple picking on Sundays. Right. Because I don't have to worry about my football team. That's what this game is. Yeah, well, because, you know, we get into October, if your team is 1 and 3, 1 and 4, you're not going to care about your team. So it's kind of a big one. We're calling this the apple picking game for the Cowboys.
Landon McCool
My wife's got a, got a honeydew list. I think that's way worse. Yeah. That I can, you know, manage to fend off, you know, better than the Cowboys defensive backs only through football. So. Yeah. Yeah. Look, it's. Yeah. I mean, it's, it's depressing to talk about a season kind of being lost already before we even get to October, but just with the way the Cowboys schedule is and you know, the way this team looked against a Chicago team, which, let's face it, was, you know, probably a similar reprieve. And, and just frankly, how. I mean, it's. The other part about this that we don't talk about enough is that. And I think because it was easy, easier for us to brush off at the time was that the Giants had no business being in. In that game like the Cowboys should. The Cowboys should have blown the Giants out like if they were the team that we were hoping that they would be. Right. The fact that, that they. That play, that had to play the Giants in a tight game and then we've seen that same Giants play the way that they have to the point where Russell Wilson is now being benched. And then, you know, the, the following week we played the way that we did against the Bears. It's, it's. It. It really kind. That's why I'm referring it to it as an inflection point because it really kind of reframed the whole, the whole season at this point. Unless they can find a way to turn it around against Green Bay, which, you know, seems like an extreme long shot.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Well, I mean, Russell Wilson sandwiches a couple 150 yard performances with a 450 yard performance against the Cowboys. So you got, and I got Marcus over there who's worried about apple cider. I mean, one thing about it, if you go heat yourself up some cider, you can already pencil in Thanksgiving Day. You can go cut your own Christmas tree. Hell yeah.
Marcus Moser
Got the whole. The rest of the calendar year Planned.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Out there, Coach, you just, you just start, you just start mapping it out, brother.
Landon McCool
Yeah, and the good seasons, you only have time to put a star on the, on the tree. On the bad seasons, you're decorating the whole dang house with merriment and cheer.
Glenn Stretch Smith
You're flocking the tree. You can flock.
Landon McCool
Hey, listen, what you do to your tree. I got it, I got it. It's a personal choice, Stretch. You know, I got it.
Glenn Stretch Smith
You go to your church and I'll go to mine. You get it?
Jeff Biggs
So, so let me ask you this. So Jerry Jones acknowledged that they're gonna make some changes to simplify and tweak some things.
Landon McCool
But there's a new GM coming.
Jeff Biggs
Yeah, I mean with the defense specifically.
Marcus Moser
I mean this is, listen, this is a defense that was running 0% man coverage. It's a four man blitzing or rushing team. How much simpler can it get? That I guess that what Jerry was talking about. I'm already thinking this is about like 8th grade football level defense right now. I honestly don't know much how more simple you could be right now.
Landon McCool
I think they're gonna try less players, Marcus.
Marcus Moser
I would go the other way. Try more.
Landon McCool
Try more. Yeah. See they get called every time they do that. I'm thinking that they're gonna do like a more five man zones like in basketball. There you go. Put out half the players to see how that works.
Glenn Stretch Smith
You know, I, I think both of you, Marcus, San Landon, just go change your last name to Simpleton. Both of you. The Simpletons.
Landon McCool
Simpleton brothers.
Marcus Moser
I, I am curious to see what Jerry Jones meant by that. And there's also a chance that that's just Jerry Jones talking and not actually right, but is it more just like straight cover two, cover four, where guys aren't having to overthink. And I don't know, I mean, I honestly have no idea what the plan is here. I, I, I'm not joking that I don't know if you can make the defense any simpler unless you are just playing straight man. I mean, how hard is just playing man coverage and guarding a guy?
Landon McCool
They, they aren't, I mean, they, I, I have a feeling they're still going to continue to play extremely high rates of COVID three because the, the one thing that they are doing well, I mean relative to other things is stopping the run, you know, and, and, or at least they're stopping the run at a NFL average level, you know, as opposed to anything else. So, you know, especially with this week with, with the packers and that kind of offense that they want to run. Like you, your only hope is to try to keep it a non balanced game on the off for the packers offense and then just attack them, you know, and like hope that you can, you know, cause a turnover. Like at this point, like I don't think simplifying is obviously the way to go. And I think that's kind of why we're all joking. I mean, I think you don't have the talent to run the scheme that you're, that you are have installed. So you're gonna need to get out of your comfort zone. And to me, like, that's why we've been calling for blitzing and man coverage. Yeah, it's high variance, but at least there's some variance because right now we're kind of the only, you know, when you get no variance, it's just plain bad all the time. So yeah, I, I, the idea of simplifying things seems like it's fruitless and I really don't know where else to go.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I mean you talk about, okay, maybe they're going to dummy it down and get away from what they want to do with matchup zone or what, whatever it is that they're calling it. I mean, at the end of the day if, if they call you the coach, your job is to know what your players can do, understand what their skill set is and put them in the position to be successful. I don't need to hear about this scheme that team scover six cover nine. Damn six one Jack Crow diamond and I don't give a crap about any of that. At the end of the day, put your players in position where they can go be successful. That's it. That's it. Everybody tries to rediscover football or we've got some new novel idea or we got this new savant over here. Line up, go cover the guy or play zone and play the zone that you're supposed to be into. Like I'm, I'm done hearing all the, all the other bull corn. I'm it already get me swearing and by the time this show's over, I'm gonna be using language and make a sailor blush.
Jeff Biggs
Let me ask you guys this and I got to give a shout out to Aisha Morrison, who's done a great job, great addition to our post game shows, our post game squad shows. She made a great point though, that a little more help up front would help the secondary out as well. Getting a little more pressure on the quarterbacks can maybe take some of that as well, do you guys see that?
Landon McCool
I mean, I think, yeah, but I think, you know, they're covering so poorly that it doesn't matter. Right? Like, I mean I, I, they're getting the people, everyone's getting the ball out very quickly and they're striking down the field, you know, like that combination like at the end of the day, if you could get the ball out and you're, you're, you're throwing it down the field, like that means that there's something happening wrong on the coverage. And again, like, like we're not talking about a situation where, you know, guys are in tight windows and challenging plays and like, it's just, you know, they're not making a tackle and there's lots of yards after catch and all that stuff. They are running through the middle of your defense. They are getting 35 and 65 yard touchdowns on the regular, like at a rate that no one else is in the NFL. We showed all the charts on the, on the, on the team. They're ranked like dead last in drop back for epa for in passing. And they're so far away from the second place team that the distance between those two teams is like almost half between the third place team. Like it's, it's absolutely ridiculous. Like they're historically bad as a pass, as a pass team. And so it, obviously a little bit of pass rush is going to help for sure, but I think, you know, it's almost like the, frankly it's like the, the, the McMosier line. Marcus, it's like there's a point when your coverage is so bad that I mean you could have a Micah Parsons and it's not going to help. And I, and I think that that's, that's the kind of thing that we're talking about here is even if Micah was here, like he, is he covering up some of this? Absolutely. Some of this. He's absolutely covering. Is he covering up all of this? No, he's not rerouting wide receivers that are running dead center in the middle of the field between two safeties. Like, yeah, it's, it's, it's holistic to say the least. But to me, line one is, is the defensive back and the coverage is, and the inability to, you know, fit into zone coverage if you're going to play zone coverage all the time.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Now let me, let me say this and, and this is out of respect for, and not disrespecting anybody. You got double tight ends on the right side is a Rocku is in a seven technique. In between the two of them, you're at the plus 22 yard line. You play three buzz. That means the safety to that side buzzes down and he covers underneath the curl flat. He becomes the curl fat player. As a Buzz player, when he comes down, the safety in the middle must go to the middle of the field and shut the middle of the field down so they start level. He buzzes down. You got to go close the middle of the field. Ezraku, let's allows both tight ends to free release. He doesn't touch either one of them. The tight end on the outside goes to the numbers. The tight end on the inside go straight up the hash, buck free. There is nobody touches either one of them. He drops back, gets the ball, slings it into the middle of the field. Touchdown. You could have the damn New York sack exchange trying to get to the quarterback. Doesn't matter. So at that point, do they need some guys that can get to the quarterback? Yeah, but if they don't clean up a lack of understanding of what they're doing on the back end of the defense, like, then I just. The minute anything else is said, I just flip the radio switch, I turn the radio to the next channel.
Marcus Moser
Are you saying that was bad coverage on Sunday? You're not wrong.
Jeff Biggs
I mean.
Marcus Moser
No, no, no.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Was provided by Bucky the Hoodies.
Marcus Moser
All right, there you go.
Jeff Biggs
So, okay, and I'm, I'm being, I'm not trying to be funny here. And I heard everything you have all said. I mean, realistically, coach. I mean, in a, As a, as a coach here, I mean, can. Can a coach today in the NFL literally walk into the locker room on Tuesday and say, okay, guys, we need to do this for now. And literally just throw everything out the window and say, okay, you're gonna go here, you're gonna go here, you're gonna play here, and you're gonna. I mean, can. Can they find a way to put, you know, glue on it and, and try to piece it together one game at a time until they. They get some help?
Glenn Stretch Smith
I mean, so here's my. And again, I don't know anything. I'm just giving you what I see, and that's how I like to do it. Because I know if I look at it and I watch it, my eyes don't lie. Here's what I believe happens, okay? I believe you come in after a Tuesday off day, and usually the first thing is done Wednesday morning is they put out the game plan for what they want to do, and the offense is in One meeting room and the defense is in the other, and they are going over. First thing that flips up is a scouting report and who you're looking at. The next thing is what we're, what we're going to do defensively. And then they install whatever it is that they want to do. The offense, it's the offensive coordinator. With the defense, it's the defensive coordinator. That meeting usually takes about an hour and a half. Then they break up and go into individual meetings. At that point, the individual coach then re emphasizes what just went over in a finite term, positionally for his guys. Then they usually go out and walk through it. Then they go out and practice, so on and so forth. Okay, then that's Wednesday. Then Thursday it's short yardage and goal line. Then Friday it's nickel situation. So and so forth. All starts with an offense, defense meetings that then go into position meetings. My gut feeling as I see this is that there is some sort of a communication disconnect. Whether that is how it's implemented in a defensive team meeting, I mean, a defensive side of the football meeting, or it's not being consistently taught in each individual meeting. All I keep hearing about is, well, they're making mental mistakes. Well, that's a missed assignment. Well, Dig shouldn't have gone up and put his hands on the receiver and put his feet together. He was doing that on. He was just doing that on his own. When you have guys doing rogue things, they're either they don't believe what you're telling them in that meeting or they think your scheme stinks. One or two. There's no, There's. There's no in between there. So my gut feeling is that there is a disconnect from what Eber Floos wants to what Overstreet is putting in to what is going into these two things with the corners and the safeties. That's. That's my best assessment that I can give you. Just on watching the film and what I see, constant mental errors and mental mistakes in the National Football League will get you one of these seats right up here next to me. Get right over here and sit in here and talk about it. A year from now, they'll fire your ass. And so at some point, somebody has to accept responsibility for what's being said. I don't care how simple it is, nor do I care how difficult it is. At the end of the day, don't tell me about the rough water. Just bring the ship in. And I don't want to hear about all that other stuff.
Marcus Moser
Not looking forward to Matt Eberflu calling me at 10:30 at night telling me about Daniel Jones. Just.
Jeff Biggs
Just something. All right. On that note, when we come back, spend a little time on the offense and specifically the receivers group and a whole lot more. But we're getting ready for Sunday Night Football and the Green Bay packers and the return of you know who. We'll do that when we come back. This is the Cowboys squad show.

When technology actually brings us closer together face to face. That's the best of both worlds. And that's why I love the new Paper Pro Move from Remarkable. It's a digital notebook that combines the familiar feel of paper with the digital powers of a tablet. I use it to take handwritten notes, and then the Paper Pro Move converts my writing into typed text that I can then share over email or Slack. All the other ways we take notes have drawbacks. Paper is hard to organize and easy to lose. Your laptop screen is a literal barrier between you and the people you're meeting with, and our phones are full of distractions. Remarkable Paper Pro Move is nothing like your other devices. It has a display that looks, feels, and even sounds like paper. None of that blue light that causes eye strain. Marcus Mosher, Landon McCool and the coach, Glenn Stretch Smith. All right, in addition to losing the game, guys, the Cowboys lost CD Lamb with that high ankle sprain. That's really a bummer. I mean he obviously for multiple reasons. Number one, do you think it's going to be a little while that he'll be out? And number two, what does this do? I know you guys did a full episode on this is George Pickens Time now let's go. But what does that do to the group and, and who do you see stepping up?
Marcus Moser
So I talked to somebody pretty close to CD Lamb on Sunday night and they were expressing that CD was absolutely going to play in this game against Green Bay. And then Monday morning came around and that ankle swelled up pretty good. And that's why these high ankle sprains are really hard to, you know, to beat. And even if it's a mild injury, a lot of times it's a four week one where it takes you a while to get back up to speed and get your explosive disc. So I don't think, I don't think we're going to see him obviously this week. I would be shocked if we see him next week. But the Cowboys are hoping it does happen relatively soon. Landon and I talked about this on Wednesday's show unlocked on Cowboys. Go check it out. But we are really excited to see George Pickens function as the Cowboys number one receiver. Number one. I actually think this is going to be really good for Dak Prescott and Pickens to work on their chemistry, put them in some really tough spots and see if they can come through it and together, you know, hopefully that pair works out really well. It's also a big time opportunity for Pickens to show that he can be a number one receiver and he's somebody that the Cowboys should invest into long term. I, I listen, I never want to see CD Lamb get hurt because honestly, he's probably my favorite player to watch in this team. But I do think this is going to be a really exciting time to see what Pickens can do as the alpha in an offense is going to have to score probably 30 plus points a game to win.
Landon McCool
Yeah, it's, it's, it's exciting because, I mean, you're, there was definitely a point when you kind of see him operating as a wide receiver too. You're getting the, the opportunity to see his gravitational pull with CD Lamb in the game. And now you, you kind of are getting an opportunity to take a look and see how he would work as, you know, a wide receiver one in these situations. You know, look, we don't really know how the outcome of this season's going to be, you know, and I think there's a chance that we could be heading towards talking about the draft, you know, sooner than we want to be. But, but I, I also think that, you know, we need to learn some more things about some of the players on the team and, and, and Pickens being one of them. Right. Because we need to find out if you're going to give this guy a contract, you know, for a multi year deal. You want him to be able to step up in moments like this. Right. And this is an opportunity for him to show that he can step up and be the wide receiver one when CD Lamb's not here. Obviously he, he's shown that to some degree while being in Pittsburgh and I think, as Marcus pointed out, been a wide receiver one for a playoff team. I think, you know, it still is kind of a different thing to be game planned in. As the. As one of two targets and then being able to take on the onus of all that on all of a sudden on. On a week to week basis. So this is, this will be a good test. And you know, for a team that is going to have a tough decision to make about Pickens in his future, this can be a real opportunity for, for him to kind of show us exactly what his worth is.
Glenn Stretch Smith
So right now you got Booker, BB and CD3 high ankle sprains. You know what they call that at the horse track? Jeff Biggs.
Marcus Moser
That's a trend, right, Jeff? What is that a trend?
Glenn Stretch Smith
That's j. I asked Jeff. You know what they call that when you hit three horse track?
Jeff Biggs
I do not.
Landon McCool
Oh, that's a.
Glenn Stretch Smith
That's why I get tired of tutoring you. It's a trifecta.
Jeff Biggs
But I do give a tinker's ass. I do.
Glenn Stretch Smith
That's good. That's one for about eight. And if you play for the Rangers, that'll get you in the starting lineup. Otherwise, the rip. Here's what I'm gonna say. I hope the Cowboys come out and play a little for the first time. Maybe play a little 12 personnel.
Landon McCool
Yeah.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Line up and see if they can run the football at Micah Parsons. See if you can do some things from that standpoint. Because what you have been able to do and what you have figured it out here is that you've got a really good running back in Javante Williams. I think you got a move guy in Lipke. I think you can see if you can play keep away from. From Green Bay. Go, go, go. See if you can bully these guys up a little bit. You know, obviously you've got to control the football and get the football in the right positions. But the one thing this team, I think the strength of this football team right now is their ability to run the football and their offensive line and how they've gotten a hat on, a hat, the angles that they take. I really think that Clayton Adams has brought over what he did at Arizona and has implemented it here. And you see at times the Cowboys run a lot of pin and pull. They're doing some things from an angle standpoint. So hey, I'm for seeing span Ford up there and, and, and let's see if you can play a little that way. And then guess what, then they, then they want to come down and play 12 personnel type. That gives Pickens a chance to do what he can do, which is go get the 50.
Landon McCool
50. Well, that was, that's what I was actually, I was just gonna say real quick, sorry, Marcus, is that the packers are very susceptible. If they are weak in one area, it feels like they're very susceptible to play action pass. Right. And so I, I do think that I was thinking about this before we got on the show that if you can cobble together a game plan to beat the packers, you could cobble together a heavy run game in which you incorporate play action pass and just stay out of as many, you know, must pass situations as you can. And that's, you know, that could be a winning solution against this defense.
Glenn Stretch Smith
What are you saying? I know what I'm talking about.
Landon McCool
Yeah, maybe a little bit. Coach.
Marcus Moser
Quarterback takes or. Yeah, Coach Quick football. One on one for maybe some new listeners. Can you explain 12 personnel, 11 personnel, 13 personnel to maybe some people that don't know what those numbers mean?
Glenn Stretch Smith
And normally in, in today's football, you see a lot of three wide receivers and then one tight end and one running back. Well, with that being the case, that that's an 11 personnel look. Now if you want to go into 12 personnel, you're taking one of those receivers out and you're replacing him with a tight end, one running back, two tight ends, two wide receivers. Jeff, you taking notes over there? You scratch 13, 13 personnel would be three tight ends and one back, 22 personnel, be two running backs and two tight ends. Now, there are some offenses that want to, and this may be a little too footballish, but there are some offenses that want to control who the Y, which is the Y is the tight end and the F, which a lot in, in old times that was, you know, a fullback. It's still an F to me. So a lot of guys then want to control who is the Y and who is the F. So in, in what we used to do, we called that. It was 12 personnel, but we called them. They were all the formations because they would be double formations. They were all D words, double, dual, die, so, so on, so forth, right? And that way you controlled, or we were able to control, okay, who is the Y and who is the F in order to get a certain matchup. So personnel wise, you know, when you see guys holding flip cards over there saying 11 or 12, that just tells you how many tight ends and how many running backs are in the game. Minus the. They don't tell the number to the receivers. The receivers just know there's two tights in the game. Then there's two wide receivers. If there are three types in the game, there's one, one track in the game, there's three wide receivers.
Marcus Moser
And it's become for defenses, a little bit harder so to sometimes identify what's out on the field. Because number one, everybody's wearing different numbers. Right. It used to be okay if it was a guy in the 80s that's either a wide receiver or a tight end, and if it was in the 20s or 30s, that's a running back.
Landon McCool
Right.
Marcus Moser
But now with these guys wearing all these wacky numbers, it gets a little harder. So you really got to do your homework. But, yeah, Coach, I just wanted to have you explain that for maybe some new listeners that aren't Quite sure what 11 and 12 personnel mean.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Yeah. And a lot of times you got somebody upstairs who's. All he's doing is looking at that. That's. That's all he's doing. Especially if you're on the defensive side of the ball because you want to substitute accordingly and be able to get. If you're in two tights, then they want to be in a standard defense. And so if they're in. If they're in 11 personnel. That's why you hear the term the nickel so much, because normally that would be four down, two linebackers and a nickel guy.
Jeff Biggs
All right, so in addition to Pickens, are we looking at Jalen Tolbert sticking out. Sticking out. And what about. I mean, I think Turpin's. When we've seen him play, I mean, the dude is tough. I mean, he. He's been a pleasant surprise to me. He's tough, he takes hits. Seems to. To contribute whenever his number is called, but it's seems like you see him once or twice a game and that's. Then he just disappears.
Marcus Moser
I could be wrong, but I don't think Turpin's role is going to change all that much. I think he's going to play about the same number of snaps as what we've seen over the last couple weeks. And a lot of that is because he's 155 pounds. Like he's not going to give you anything as a blocker. And that's where I do think someone like Jaylen Tolbert, who's an adequate blocker at times, or Ryan Flournoy, I wouldn't be surprised if we see more of those guys replacing CD Lamb and Pickens, you know, continues to function as the outside receiver. And maybe we see more of Flournoy or, you know, or Tolbert kind of operating out of the slot.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, it's funny because one of the things that we talked about in our show, I think it was yesterday, was that, you know, as opposed to last year, because of the types of, of how different types of how they get used between CD and George Pickens, the Cowboys are actually probably in a little bit better situation, wide receiver wise, when it was just. Than when it was just CD last year, without a wide receiver too. Because Pickens is better at the job of being the outside ex receiver, isolated on his side, attacking down the field. And that, you know, hopefully is providing if, if you can actually prove to the defense that he's worthy of the attention, is hopefully providing for guys like Ferguson and the run game underneath because he's pushing the safeties, he's forcing you to play more shell coverage. CD definitely could do that stuff. I mean, there's, you know, there's no doubt. But CDs best, you know, play is usually done inside. Right. And as a receiver that gets the ball quickly and creates yak, which kind of works against Ferguson a little bit. So the good news is for the Cowboys, if you're going to have one of these two receivers out schematically having the big body X who can get vertical down the field still manages to provide a little bit better than kind of trying to force CD out there to have him do that job and then sacrificing what he ultimately does best.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Yeah, I mean, you, you, you can't, you can't. Turpin's not physically built to take more than one or two big licks and he took a big lick late in the game. He, he's not going to take any more than that. His body can't handle any more than that. Now if, if you're going to run the football to me, you got to have Flournoy in there, you got to have Tolbert in there, you got to have some guys that can go block the safety. If you watch the Monday night game, what you saw Detroit do was bring whether it was Aman, Ra, Williamson, Raymond, they'd bring Them right in behind that tight end. And a lot of times Hamilton would meet him right there about 3 yards and it almost becomes what we used to call lead, where, where the receiver is leading up on the safety. And I mean it's, it's a, it's a collision. I mean, and it, and it becomes a very physical situation. Turpin is not that guy. He, he can't, he can't be that guy. He's not going to take those hits. And if you put him in that position, then this is the same thing. I keep saying you're not a very good football coach because you have to recognize what, what he is. He's an outside guy, he's a bubble screen runner, he's a tunnel screen runner. Sometimes he can get through the middle of the defense and he is a deep over guy and he, he is a deep through the middle guy. And so to me, to put him in a position to where he's going to get busted in the mouth, you're not, you're not, you're not using him in the right way.
Jeff Biggs
All right, great stuff. I mean it was like a coaching clinic right there, that whole segment, Coach with you and Landon Marcus, where you guys break down. It's awesome. I love it. Thank you guys very much. All right, well, when we come back, we gotta, we gotta mention, you know who, but.
Landon McCool
I missed Rich.
Jeff Biggs
But I want to get your thoughts about just the, the return of the game itself. And, and I'm curious. I, I'm, I'm, I'm genuinely wondering like, are, are Cowboy fans still, are they still mad? Is it still mad at Jerry? Are they still mad at Micah? Are they, do they still care about Micah? Is it, was he not here long enough to really have that kind of an impact? I'm curious what you, what, what the pulse has been so far this week with Cowboys fans. So we'll do that when we come back. Also, we'll talk some other notes as we get ready for the Sunday night showdown with the Green Bay Packers. This is the Cowboys squad show.

And as you know, Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move. Mazda delivers confidence with every ride with more IHS top safety pick plus awards than anyone else. From footwork to breath work, athletes sweat all the details. Mazda brings the same intention to how we craft every model. And you can make everyday drives feel like anything. But from smooth handling to intuitive controls, like our players, we sweat every detail because when you make every move count, impossible becomes irrelevant. Mazda move and be moved. All right, welcome back to the Cowboy squad show. Marcus Moser, Landon McCool, co host of the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast, and the coach, former Cowboys coach Glenn Stretch Smith. All right, so Brian Schottenheimer said that Micah Parsons return is, quote, another championship opportunity. But then we got the news that Micah's now on the packers injury report with that nagging back issue. So I don't know, what are you guys feeling about, about him, about him coming back, about this game, about where things stand. He continues to say, hey, no big deal to him, nothing personal. He's kind of moved on.
Landon McCool
Of course not. He got what he wanted. Like, so, yeah, it's not nothing personal for him. So, yeah, yeah, I mean, I guess I'll go first then. Yeah, that's my fault. So, yeah, I mean, he, you know, I, I, I, I'm kind of at the, I'm glad that this is, is happening this week, I guess, at this point, so maybe we can move on past it. Like, I, I, I, I, I think, you know, it's terrible. It, it, it took a wrecking ball to the season. There's no, there's, there's just no way around it. Right. Like the whole situation was awful. And the more I learn, the more I get mad at all parties involved, you know, like, no one, no one is a good guy in this situation for me. Like, I, I don't like, I think some people obviously view Micah in a more favorable light, but I, honestly, I, after what's, you know, kind of come to light, it feels like, you know, he, he told us a lot of things and said a lot of things that, that didn't end up being the case. And so just like Jerry, you know, so I'm not thrilled with either side of it. I, I hate that it happened. I wish that the trade never happened. But I'm also, you know, I'm so exhausted of talking about it. I'm so tired of talking about it. And I, I'm to the point where it's like I, I'm, I've moved on. Like, I wanna, I just want to move on. I just want it to be a situation where, you know, they come in, the results of the game happen, the people, everyone has their, their, their comments about it and then we, we finish the rest of the season.
Marcus Moser
Go ahead, coach, I want to hear your thoughts.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I mean guys, let's, let's give, let's give a real three game assessment as to where we're at. Let's just be as transparent as we know how to be. If you watch this defense and you don't recognize that this defense has multiple needs, Multiple needs. That means I'm going to say more than four players. I'm saying that right now, this, this looks like they did the right thing moving him on because there is some severe deficiencies on the defensive side of the football. Do they still need a pass rusher? Hell yeah, they do. Did they think that maybe they could roll in Neyland, Ezraku, Sam Williams and get some production? I'm going to say they probably sold that to the process and it's not looking very good right now. This team has multiple needs on the defensive side of the ball. So guess what? They got the draft picks. Don't do anything crazy with those draft picks right now. Let's hold on to them and let's get, get through this situation of what's going to be a, it is going to be a tough year. There's, there's just no other way around it. I'm not going to come on here and tell you that I think it's going to be any easier than that. I've always appreciated the, the pilot that comes on and says, hey, I'm gonna have the flight attendants come through and pick the drinks up. I need you to put your tray table and stow it away. I need to bring the back of your chair up. Buckle it in boys. It's gonna be a little rough right here because that's where we're at. And so do I think at times they can mask the situation. Offensively I do, I think they're, I think they got a pretty good running game. I think they're good up front. I think Dak has done some things that quite frankly, I didn't think he could do. And so focus on that. Try to get yourself in position where you can offensively either control the time of possession and Win the game that way or score 35 because it's not going to change for 14 more weeks.
Marcus Moser
Jeff, I'm gonna break some news for you. Michael Parsons, dealing with the back and neck injury, he's gonna play on Sunday night. I don't know if I need to tell you that. I don't think you need to be all that concerned. It's, it's frustrating because I can, you can make the argument that this was a smart trade for the Cowboys in the long term. Right. And I don't think anybody wants to hear that right now, but it's, we could make that argument. I think the frustrating thing is that if they would have done some things better over the last couple years, the loss wouldn't feel as devastating. And I think a good example of that is like you let Dorrance Armstrong walk after having 16 sacks in two seasons and he's gotten better and better in Washington. He's not getting paid a ton, but because Sam Williams hasn't stepped up because Marcia Nealand hasn't improved, you have to go out and sign Dante Fowler. You have to go out and sign Jadavian Clowney. And now you're paying those guys more combined than when what Dorance Armstrong got from Washington. Right. And I think Dorrance Armstrong is not Micah Parsons. But if you had Dorrance Armstrong on one side with Kenny Clark and also De Gazua, you probably feel much better about your pass rush. So it's, it's just all these little things that add up to the Cowboys not having a very good defense and then trading your best player four days before the season start makes it even worse than it needs to be.
Glenn Stretch Smith
And then you talked about this. You mentioned this, Marcus. They let, they let Malik Collins out. He's playing pretty well. They let Xavier woods go. They drafted Xavier woods out of Louisiana Tech. They let him go. He's playing pretty well. Jordan Lewis, he's playing pretty well. Who mis evaluated that situation?
Landon McCool
Well, I, I would like to push back on some of that because Malik Collins and Xavier woods both had some pre pretty terrible years between now and when they got let go. Like, let's let you know, those are also cases where I'm telling you they.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Mis evaluated those guys. If they're out playing their ass off now.
Landon McCool
I, I, I, I, I, I, I.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Don'T study Malik Collins or Xavier Woods. If, if Pro Football focus tells me that I'm okay with that.
Landon McCool
I mean, I'm saying that they would have had to get through one more contract of them playing Bad before they got to this point, playing well time. But each of those guys, like, all.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Right, I'll play that game with you.
Landon McCool
Throw it out. How they done what they got. No, no, no. I'm just not willing to play revisionist history on this. How have they done evaluating the defense.
Glenn Stretch Smith
They got right now?
Landon McCool
I, I think that they've done bad and good.
Glenn Stretch Smith
I think it's tinker's ass. I'll let Jeff say it. Not worth a tinker's ass. They're not very good.
Landon McCool
The defense right now. Yeah, absolutely. It's not very good.
Glenn Stretch Smith
So they miss about.
Landon McCool
But they also were the same team that, that, you know, drafted all those, those players and developed all those players. And you know, so I, I mean, I think that there's something to that as well. And, and again, like, it's not like they were necessarily wrong about Collins and Xavier woods at the time. Those guys weren't playing as well.
Marcus Moser
But I think, I think landed the big one on. Because I, I agree with you, like Malik Collins and what's. Like those guys have had some up and down careers. I think the one that bothers you the most is probably Jordan Lewis, right? Like, if you knew Jordan Lewis didn't.
Landon McCool
Make any sense, right? Like the whole timeline this year just didn't make any sense.
Marcus Moser
And that's the thing. If you knew you were going to trade Micah and you had all this money left over, then you put it back into your secondary, you keep Jordan Lewis, you have Duron Bland with Trayvon Diggs, and then you feel a lot better. I can guarantee you they're not busting as many coverages if they have Jordan Lewis playing in the slot.
Landon McCool
Right?
Marcus Moser
And yeah, your pass rush is still going to be bad, but at least the coverage is going to be slightly better. That's why it's all these little things like letting Jordan Lewis leave that add up to what we're seeing now on Sundays.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Well, let me ask you this. Have they, have they evaluated what they got at safety? Is that, do you think that's a good. Do you think what they have in Malik Hooker and Donovan Wilson with what they're trying to do defensively, which is. I, I don't know. I'll let you do what, what are they trying. They're playing zone? Is that what they're. What that, that's 90 of what they're doing. Have they evaluated those two guys correctly? Two box safeties that are run support players are. Have they evaluated them correctly now saying we're gonna, we're gonna Re we're gonna, we're gonna shoehorn this, we're gonna square peg this round hole with two guys that aren't cover guys.
Landon McCool
I, I don't know. See, I, that's the thing, Coach. I, I would have a hard time like looking at that situation and saying that, that, that the Cowboys misevaluated, those guys are aging out is, that's the issue to me. And, and honestly, if you're, if you're asking me like from a 10, from the, from the seat of like the GM or, or you know, a non coaching seat. If you ask me if Malik Hooker, who has experience in the Eber flu defense was going to have as much trouble, you know, learning to play this Eber flu defense that he literally just came from like not too long before this, I, I would have been shocked that he had the problems. And if you had told me that Donovan Wilson was going to struggle in a, in a heavy zone cover 3 defense, when I've seen him play a heavy zone cover three defense and succeed, I, I, I, I would be less shocked because I think that he was teetering on the edge of aging out already. But I think that, that, that what the way they played and the way that they've deployed those guys has been very surprising to me.
Glenn Stretch Smith
So all I'm, all I'm saying is there's some MIS evaluation going on and whether it was with the staff coming in and evaluating what they had, whether it's the pro guys evaluating what they had or whether it's a combination of the two. I'm just looking right now and I see what they have in this secondary. I see the players that they let get out of here and I see what they're playing with now and there's MIS evaluation with, with what's going on.
Landon McCool
I, I listen, I think the co, I think specifically on the coaching level there has been a MIS evaluation of what's going on, clearly.
Glenn Stretch Smith
And, and I think we're not in those meetings, right? We don't, we're not, we're not in with a start talk. So, so we're just having to take a guess on what we see. But at some level they've evaluated wrong.
Landon McCool
And I also think again, they, I mean, to be fair to them, they were putting into a pretty terrible position by Jerry Jones, you know, and, and they had all of this fit together with the pieces they had with the crowning piece being the guy that they traded, you know, four days before the season. So I, I, you know, part of it is, is, is Bad evaluation on the back end. But part of it is they were put into an impossible situation by the owner.
Jeff Biggs
GM Marcus, I. I need to ask you something really quick, and I know we got to take our final break, but you made a comment, you made a comment that if the Cowboys knew they were going to do this, they could have done some things differently.
Landon McCool
Oh, my God, so much.
Jeff Biggs
I mean, do you think. Do you think this was all. Do you think they were kind of hoping or kind of planning that. That this would happen with Micah and that they would trade him, that this was out of the. The old Herschel Walker playbook from back in the day?
Marcus Moser
I wouldn't be surprised if we find out that the Cowboys did have some serious conversations internally in March and April about trading Micah Parsons, but I don't think it got real until we got to August. In Micah Parsons didn't show up or really didn't participate in training camp. It's just a lack of planning. All things were like, as soon as you knew there was a possibility that this deal wasn't going to get done or that, you know, Jerry wasn't going to move off the mic. The number. Neither was Micah. You should have done it in April because maybe you draft a defensive end at 12, maybe your whole draft goes differently. Knowing what you need to get on the defensive line and what you get in the secondary. Maybe you don't draft a corner in the third round coming off a torn ACL who's not going to play for the. At least the first four games of the year. It's just, it's.
Landon McCool
Maybe you get different, different, different defensive coordinator, right? Like, maybe you don't get a guy that. That was relying on four pass rushers in order to get pressured to support his zone coverage scheme.
Marcus Moser
I think all of the reasons and excuses that we've heard now from Jerry Jones, I think it's all a bunch of crap, right? And they're just trying to give us something to believe that they had a plan. I don't think they really did.
Landon McCool
The. The last one about the timing, about the timing not being an issue, was the most egregious one in my mind. Like, give me a break. At least admit that you didn't want to do this up until you decided to pull the trigger. Like, that's, that's.
Marcus Moser
No, because you're gonna get the same trade offer on August 1st that you got four days before the season. It wasn't going to change, right? If not, if anything, you might have gotten a better offer because more teams have more cap space at that time.
Landon McCool
You waited till the the worst possible time to get the lowest possible return. And, and, and you, you de optimized the the value of your own trade by, by waiting to.
Jeff Biggs
All right, good stuff, guys. When we come back, our final segment and some final thoughts. And we'll look ahead to Sunday night and also have a couple other player updates for you as well. This is the Cowboys squad show.
Tyler Roland
Nothing makes you feel more like a champ than a DIY home project done right. But if your home security playbook involves using a fake sign in your yard, that's safeish. Not safe. Don't settle for safeish. DIY with ADT to actually help protect your home. It's easy to set up and you get virtual assistance from ADT support team. Plus you can still tell everyone you did it yourself. Don't settle for safeish. Get ADT visit ADT.com or call 1-800-ADT ASAP. That's 1-800-ADT ASAP.
Jeff Biggs
We are back. The Cowboy squad show getting ready for week four Sunday in the NFL. The Cowboys Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers. All right, a couple of things. Number one, we know officially now Jadevion Clowney is going to make his Cowboys debut on Sunday night. But aside from that, Cowboys back home packers were rolling. They had the long week from the Thursday night game. They, they were two and oh, first road game and they go into Cleveland and took a pretty good loss there. I don't think they were expecting that. I don't think anybody was. So they're going to be motivated obviously to come back and obviously with Micah coming back. So all kinds of, all kinds of different angles and motivational angles for this one. What, what kind of game though? What, what are we, we looking at for this one Sunday night?
Marcus Moser
Layton, you might as well go first because I'm going to be very pessimistic here. So go ahead.
Landon McCool
I mean I, I, I think it's it. Look you Vegas is telling you right now, right, there's seven point dogs at home. Like that's, that's pretty wild, right? I, I think you know the Cowboys have very few paths to victory here, right? Injuries played a part of it. Talent is an issue. We've talked about a lot of the problems here. We talked about Micah Parsons and one of these teams has Mike Parsons, one of them doesn't. Which you know, again we could talk about the value of the trade and I will point this out too. I, I think people talking about this trade without like even finding out who we get it from, the draft picks or any of that stuff I think is unfair. Right. Like obviously to evaluate the trade is just a trade for Kitty Clark and, and Mike Parsons. That's not what the whole trade is. So but for as it pertains to this week, they have Micah Parsons and we don't which is a pretty huge advantage. Again, I think the Cowboys path to victory include having a heavy run game on offense, play action shots that you know from outside the red zone to score touchdowns and possessing the ball so that your defense doesn't have, doesn't get overexposed. And then when your defense is out there, you've got to be aggressive, you've got to force the issue. Like I, I, you just, you can't let sit there and play coverage and just let Jordan Love pick you apart. Jordan loves a better quarterback than all the other guys you've seen so far this year, period. I don't care what anybody says. Like and he's head and shoulders maybe above all the those guys. So he is going to do to you much worse than Russell Wilson or you know, frankly, Jalen Hurtsi locked on Eagles.
Marcus Moser
You heard him.
Landon McCool
Yeah, he's right. Yeah. I mean give me a break. As far as throwing the football specifically in the middle of the field. Come on. No one is going to argue that. So yeah, Jordan Love is, is getting ready to slice and dice you if you don't do something about it. And I think do something about it includes sending upwards of eight and nine men at him all at once.
Marcus Moser
Jeff, do you know the last time the Cowboys were at least a seven point underdog at home? Do you have any idea?
Jeff Biggs
Sometime last season.
Marcus Moser
No. 2020 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, they were 13 and a half point underdogs at home. I think the Steelers at that time were like 10, 0. Garrett Gilbert started that game at quarterback for the Cowboys and they almost won. It came right down to the last possession which is a good reminder that anything can happen in the NFL.
Jeff Biggs
No favorites.
Landon McCool
Yeah, any given Sunday.
Marcus Moser
Any given Sunday. My favorite football movie of all time. Having said all that, I, I think this is trending in the wrong direction. Green Bay is coming off a really bad loss. Prime time. Just knowing Micah Parsons, I think he's going to put on a show. I think the Cowboys, if they can run the ball, if Pickens has a good day, they can hang for a while. But I think this one has a chance to get pretty ugly.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Yeah, I mean I, you know the path for me is to, is to control the time of Possession and see if you can convert as many third downs as you can convert on offense. I'm not even talking about the other side of the ball. To hell with it. I'm saying you got it. You got to go and take multiple 75 plus yard drives and convert on third down and control the clock and try to get yourself in a position where you can let your best player, the kicker, try to win the game.
Jeff Biggs
Yeah. Keep their offense off the field and maybe try to try to get a lead if you can. And all the cliches and turnovers and everything else.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Right.
Marcus Moser
They're going to need a lot. I mean, listen, it happens across the NFL. You know, you. If you're plus two in the turnover differential, you win like 95 of the games. The Cowboys have an awesome special teams unit that can help them stay in this game as well. I'm curious to see what the, the vibe and the energy is like in AT T Stadium. Is it a loud crowd? Is it 50 Packer fans who always travel really well? Yeah, I know the last time I looked at the numbers, I think it was it's expected to at least be 25 Packer fans. I'm just, I, I want to see what the environment is like on Sunday night because honestly, I think that could change things here.
Landon McCool
And look.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Let me ask you, Marcus, are you the guy when you're in line at the grocery store and you're waiting to pick up the stuff for your kids and all that and, and the Inquirer is right there in the rack, do you reach over and pick up the Inquirer and kind of, kind of gaze through that kind of.
Marcus Moser
Oh, yeah. I always like to see what Bigfoot's up to. Yeah.
Landon McCool
Fat boy. Fat boy. What's fat boy doing? I. I listen, I think, I think Jordan loves a high variance guy. And so I, I think there is a game script in which, like I said, you force the issue and, and he'll throw an interception, he'll fumble the ball, something will happen. Like, you've got to create chaos on that side of the ball. You can't just sit back and let them slice and dice you. And yeah, on offense, you got to make sure that the Green Bay offense is on the field as little as possible.
Glenn Stretch Smith
And they gave up, they gave up five sacks last week. I mean, if you, if you can, if you can execute and run some clean stunts, some ets, te some loop, some guys you can, you can give their offensive line some problems. They don't have a great offensive line. That is that is their, their weakness is, is their offensive line. So if you can, you know, if you can give them some fits, they'll, they'll, they'll give up sacks. And obviously that's, that's what, that's what everybody wants to see is, is some coverage on the back end and see if you can get to the quarterback with a four man pressure.
Jeff Biggs
Yeah. The right tackle is going to be out too, if I'm not mistaken.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Yeah.
Marcus Moser
Zach Tom, they might be starting a rookie, Anthony Belton at right tackle, their left guard. Yeah, he's, he's been really bad when he's played this year. I don't think he's going to play. And that means Jordan Morgan's likely going to play one. It's a mess. Their offensive line's a mess. We'll see if the Cowboys can take advantage.
Jeff Biggs
And real quick, what about Kenny Clark? Maybe he'll have a big game. We talk about Micah, but what about the former Packer, Kenny Clark? He might.
Marcus Moser
Revenge game.
Landon McCool
Yeah, he's been, he's been one of the better players on the defense, you know, since he's gotten here and yeah, absolutely. A revenge game. These guys, he, you know, he wasn't happy with, with the whole situation from what I remember hearing, like, so, I mean, at least the way, you know, it went down, he. If they, they traded him, they don't want him is what I think he said. So, yeah, I think it'll be interesting to see if he can use some of that inside knowledge to, to help with the pass rush.
Jeff Biggs
There you go. All right, final thoughts. What do we have coming up on the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast the rest of the week?
Marcus Moser
Yeah. So we've got a crossover show coming tomorrow with Peter Bukowski of Locked On Packers. And Jeff, let me tell you, I've got a root canal scheduled for Monday morning. I was looking forward to that more than doing this show with Peter, talking about the Micah Parsons trade, but I promise it's good content and actually by the end, I got him a little bit worried and spooked about this game. So make sure you guys check out that. We'll also have a preview show for you guys on Friday afternoon as well.
Landon McCool
Anytime either of us talk to Peter, it's always, it's always sad. It's always a sad story.
Jeff Biggs
Now how is it. Is it he putting up the pack and putting the Cowboys down? Is that.
Marcus Moser
No, it's just.
Landon McCool
No, he's just, he just represents the packers, you know? Yeah, it's like. Yeah.
Marcus Moser
In every sense of the word right? Like yeah, yeah. Think of a Packer fan. It's Peter.
Landon McCool
Perfectly lovely guy. Just, you know, roots for a terrible, terrible monster team.
Marcus Moser
That's it.
Jeff Biggs
Awesome. Okay. Well guys, thank you very much. Have a great weekend and hope that root canal goes well.
Marcus Moser
Looking forward to it. More than the game. Can't wait.
Jeff Biggs
Coach. Have a good week. You'll be doing TV and then we'll do our post game show afterwards on Sunday night late. Look forward.
Glenn Stretch Smith
Yeah. Sorry to bother you Jeff. All good.
Jeff Biggs

Episode Theme:
The panel breaks down a pivotal Week 4 matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers—spotlighting the return of Micah Parsons to AT&T Stadium (now in a Packers uniform), the aftermath of a demoralizing Week 3 loss, and the Cowboys’ search for answers amid defensive struggles and injury woes.
Hosts:
Jeff Biggs (moderator), Marcus Mosher & Landon McCool (Locked On Cowboys), Glenn “Stretch” Smith (former Cowboys coach & analyst)
This episode zeroes in on the state of the Dallas Cowboys as they prepare to face a reeling but dangerous Green Bay Packers squad on Sunday Night Football. The group offers raw, candid, and often humorous takes on the Cowboys’ defensive collapse, the Parsons saga, evaluation missteps across the franchise, and how the offense might adjust to CeeDee Lamb’s injury.
The show features dry wit, self-deprecating humor, and blunt football talk. The hosts are critical but fair, with a deep knowledge of the team’s inner workings—and aren’t afraid to call out ownership or coaching when warranted. “Coaching clinic” moments offer listeners real football education in accessible terms.
Next episode: Crossover preview with Locked On Packers and a detailed game preview to come.
