How about them Cowboys? It's the Cowboys squad everything. Dallas Cowboys every week covering all the big hits and game changing plays from America's team the way only the locked on podcast network can get ready and squat up. It's the Cowboys squad show starting now.
Jeff
Well, I think we could say it was worth the wait, right? Cowboys first win of the season. Look, bottom line is you can't start Owen 2. That would have been a disaster if they would have started 0 and 2. Thankfully they found a way to pull it out. There was some good, there was some bad, there was some ugly. Thankfully though, we have a full hour here on the Cowboy squad show to break it all down. Thank you for waiting with us. Thank you for hanging with us on a Sunday night. Great to be with you. Join tonight by Aisha Morrison, who's to my right. Aisha, good evening to you. And to the far right kind of working in between his TV work tonight, former Cowboys coach Glenn Stretch Smith. Okay, where do you guys want to begin? Like I said, we have so much to get to and thankfully we do have a full hour. But I'm just, I'm glad that they found a way to pull it out that showed me something. A loss would have been a disaster.
Aisha Morrison
What you got, coach? I want his thoughts.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Well, I mean, I'm going to start by saying, you know, you never want to style point wins and you don't want a style point losing. It's hard to win in the National Football League. Ask Mac Jones. I mean, Mac Jones goes and plays with a really good San Francisco team and has to go, you know, throw for almost 300 yards and three touchdowns to beat New Orleans. It's hard to win in the NFL, I'm going to say. And then I'm going to say, I mean, there, I don't think I recognize. I mean, look completely foreign to me. And I don't go to a few camps, a few schools and understand some of it, but good for. I think Dak did some good things and led his team. I mean, Aubrey is just. He's so consistent with what he does and, you know. But I tell you what, it's. It's hard again, it's hard to pinpoint certain things, but I take away from it and say I'm right where I was week one, which is this team. Better saddle up and get ready to score 32 to 35 a game if you're going to win.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, I mean, the Cowboys offense struggled today to, especially early in that game to find some rhythm. Had a little bit more success in the second quarter, but the offensive rhythm wasn't there because the offensive line was struggling with that Giants front coming into this game. And so the offense was struggling. And then the defense just looked like, well, number one, not being able to get pressure. And then you have all this stuff going on your secondary. I felt like it was a recipe for disaster. Cowboys opted to play a lot of zone and Russell Wilson, being the experienced quarterback he is, took. Took what the defense gave him. And so it was a rough day from that point. And I do agree this defense definitely needs to figure some things out in the coming weeks.
Jeff
I kind of felt like they missed Duron Bland just a little bit, and you can see why he. He got paid so well.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah. I mean, Ready Stewart came in and played pretty well. You saw him make some good plays in the run game and stuff like that. But the thing about the nickel position is that the way that Jordan Lewis, the former nickel, nickel cornerback, explained it to me and coach, you can correct me, is that the nickel cornerback, especially if you're out there as often, they're kind of an extension of the first and third level. There's a lot of communication that goes on from the nickel spot and a lot of responsibility. And I do feel like you missed his presence there this weekend. They and the Giants tested it. They were like, okay, well, he's not there. We're going to make you see what you guys can do. And also the Cowboys safeties were the ones that really struggled as well today. It wasn't just the cornerbacks.
Jeff
Yeah, Trayvon Diggs had a tough game.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Yeah. You know, here's. Here's what. Yeah. Now here's what I'm gonna say and we can go over all that if you want to. At the end of the day, if you don't, if you let guys free release through the middle of the defense, I don't give a damn who the safety is. I don't care who they are. And I'm going to tell you this, if you reroute some players, reroute some players, you're going to get killed. And I don't care if you have the New York sack exchange up front rushing the quarterback. It doesn't make a whiskey if you don't get your hands on guys and at least reroute them into some positions. You got big time issues and I'm telling you we can sit here and again. Oh, did they miss Bland? Sure. Do they miss Jordan Lewis? Yes. At the end of the day though, you've got to, you cannot just allow receiver not to play any leverage, not to do anything. I can show you the last 15 yard comeback that neighbors catches in overtime. And I'm telling you the freaking corner is 18 yards deep. I could have thrown the ball out there with the opposite hand and completed it. And so the point I'm making is right now this secondary he's got proing about from top to bottom, they got some issues, they better get straightened out. And it's how you at least challenge receivers because these guys, Russell Wilson threw for 500 yards. It's a 15 year vet. Are you me 15 year vet. And he sets a record on you. I mean I like I'm, I'm, I'm disgusted by that. I mean it's, it's frustrating because then I see a guy like Javante Williams, played his ass off, ran the football as hard as you could. I do not like the technique secondary at all.
Aisha Morrison
No, I'm not feeling, I agree with you coach. And this was something that we saw last week as well, saw it in preseason but I wasn't sure if it was something that would translate this soft coverage and just never like not really playing any type of man. Like you said, you gotta get your hands on guys in this league. You cannot just sit up here and allow them, you got to play them tough. Wide receivers wear down too, you know and I, I just, I was definitely surprised at the fact that these guys weren't jamming at the line. They were giving up all that cushion and a good quarterback is going to exploit that and it's really like free yardage. And also too I, I mean with the lack of pass rush and all that stuff Going on that don't make it no better. So not only is he being able to deliver the ball as he pleases and sitting back there chilling with chips, then also you're not doing anything to affect the receivers. So that was Coach, that was something that was burning me up all week. And again the Cowboys opted to play mostly zone last last week that I, I felt like that mattered. The I felt like the Eagles receivers still trying to get a field. Both of them were dealing with some small soft tissue injuries. So maybe that was why. Coach, I wanted to ask you though. Do you think that they're doing this when you have a team that's just opting to not play, man, is that a trust factor to you? Is this the scheme or is this the coach?
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Well, I mean.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, sorry, go ahead.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Yeah, no, I know. I'm not gonna.
Aisha Morrison
I'm.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
The one thing you'll never hear me get on here and do is second guess a call, run, pass a coverage that they're calling. I'm not going to question that. What I am going to tell you is that I don't care whether you're playing bump man, whether you're playing cover four, six a weak roll, nine a strong roll, one hold one at one robber. I don't give a crap. At the end of the day, you cannot let a receipt just freely run wherever he wants to. And I'm saying that because if you're playing over the top help, you got to know the leverage that you need to be at and then you've got to at least ride him for five yards, get something on him. If you're playing off coverage, find playoff coverage and then squat at a certain point so that the receiver has to adjust the to what you're doing. You're just entitled to certain ground as he is. But when you sit and just let him run by you and just go around there he went. No, that's going to put incredible stress on the safety. You got to help your safety. You got to funnel that guy one way or the other and then you got to use the boundary as your extra guy. That's. Why do you think they say it's so hard to play the nickel? It's so hard to play the nickel because you don't he gets a two way go. It's a very difficult position. But, but when you're, when you're just allowing them just to. And again, I'm not going to second guess Matt Eber loose and the coverage that he called or the stunt that any of that. What I am going to question is, what technique are you playing and what is it that you're trying to accomplish in this defense? Because I can tell you it was completely foreign to me to just let cash on 3rd and 25 run through the middle of the defense and pick it up. It's crazy.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah. Some of the pass offs weren't. Some of the pass offs didn't seem clean. There were some breakdowns and coverages. You saw guys at the end of plays, some of these big plays, like, looking at each other and stuff. There was some miscommunication as well. So maybe we'll be able to. I think I'll get the opportunity to talk to Eber Flutes this week. I think it's Thursdays that they. We can talk to coordinators. So I'll try to get a little bit more information on kind of what their goal is, coach, and what they're looking for for these guys. Maybe get us some answers, because I was baffled as well.
Jeff
Yeah. So what, you know, where do you go from here as far as fixing it? I mean, that. That's going to be the big key. I mean, this should be a great opportunity, great tape to look at and say, okay, guys, this is not acceptable. We got to get better here.
Aisha Morrison
I mean, go ahead.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
No, I think. I'm sorry, I'm not trying to interrupt. We don't have to go in order every time. Here's. The point is I don't care. Again, at some point, you have to coach and believe in something. I don't. I don't care what it is. Something you got to believe in. Either a leverage play, you're going to funnel him a certain way. You got to believe in a physical style. Hands on him and bump him and run with him. You're going to be some sort of a speed bump out there to make him question. You need to go inside. Do I? I need to go outside. And so at least you get in the way. But I'm telling you, to see that technique. Lack of technique. Lack of. I don't care what you want to call it. At the end of the day, that is completely unacceptable. And. And they're going to have to figure out if they're going to be a zone team. I'm fine playing zone, but you know what? Be a physical zone team and at least look, read and react and funnel the receivers where they're supposed to go.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, I'm not sure. I feel like from what I saw from Buffalo when I watched Ky Elam, they did run zone there, but Dallas has not been a zone team for quite some time. Mike Zimmer implemented it more last year and there was confusion then. So I do understand that there is, this is a jump and this is a huge change. When Dallas, when, when Dallas had Dan Quinn, they were a man team, baby. That's, that's something that was a very known thing with them. Top of the league every year in man coverage. So I understand this being a jump for some of the guys, but I agree with you. Some of it is also effortless. Some of it just is like, just like you said, just affect the wide receiver. You can play your zone and be responsible for your zone, but that does not mean that you just don't engage the receiver at all. And we saw that a lot today. So defensively I felt like that was a bit of a problem there today. Especially the deep passes, the, the mental lapses on some of these big third downs. I mean, talk about Wandell Moore. He's. He's a Robinson, rather Wanda Robinson. Coming into this game, I was concerned about him because somebody that's been on the Giants roster for a while, but in within this offense this year, I don't know what it is, but they've, they've seen that he is versatile. He's always kind of been their Swiss Army Knife, kind of like Avante Turpin. He has statistically been one of the best receivers in the NFL on third down for quite some time. He made up the majority of their third down passes last week. So he just had free reign. And I understand that Dallas opted to have tried Trayvon Diggs shadow Malik Neighbors early in this game. And for whatever reason, whoever was supposed to be on that other side or whatever was supposed to be going on, they exploited that all day for the majority of the game. Waddell Robinson is a shifty, very athletic receiver and he really made the Cowboys pay in the short to intermediate game today.
Jeff
Yeah, and I think too, just collectively, you don't want to give up 21 points in the fourth quarter. You want to finish strong and you want to give your chance at your team a better chance to win and pull it out. And so thankfully they did. Like I said, if, you know, we talked about it last week, I mean, kidding aside, week two, this team going down 02 would have really put them in a really bad spot. I mean, they had to win this game. And as you both said, thankfully, what a weapon to have Brandon Aubrey. I mean, what a blessing to, to be able to kick that the way that he did. Both of them I mean.
Aisha Morrison
Oh, go ahead. No, no, I was gonna say, I mean, yeah, even though it was ugly for a lot of the day, I felt like the offense made some plays, put together some. Some big drives when they needed to, you know, to finish out the game. And again, like coach said, you know, like, you know, there's a lot of work to be done, but figuring how out how to win games, to me is a skill. And so it's not always going to be pretty. It's not. This is week two. I get it. But I'm still kind of, like, taken aback by what happened today. I don't know about y', all, but I'm still a little like, geez Louise. They. They routed y' all today.
Jeff
All right, when we come back.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Well, it was. It was a hard watch. I mean, it was a very hard watch.
Jeff
I'll tell you what, when. Coach, while we're gone, maybe we could try to reset you if we can, because you're. You've been chopping in and out. Not your fault. I know you're. You're working on from the TV studio, but maybe we can have you disconnect and reconnect and maybe we can get a cleaner feed when we return. But want to get into the offense a little bit and got a lot of people watching live and also with a lot of great comments, we'll get to some of those as well. Great to be with you on this Sunday night, though. Hey, the Cowboys, they pulled it out and they got the win. How to get that win? And they did it in ot. First win of the season for the Cowboys and the first win under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. More coming up. This is the Cowboys squad show.

Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
He is.
Jeff
He's coming back now. We'll get him on here. Cowboys win today though. They pull it out in overtime, 40 to 37. That was, you know, for week two. Two. That was like you said, Aisha, that was, that was a lot. That was wild. I mean, we know that September has kind of become like the new August anyway with a lot of guys not playing. But with that said after the, you know, wild game in Philadelphia, great start. You knew coming into this one that this was a total, I don't want to say a trap game, but it was a, it was a house money game for sure for the Giants. Right? I mean, they had nothing to lose, they had to win, but, but they had nothing to lose. All the pressure was on the Giants to win at home and they kind of came out and played that way until the Cowboys finally got it going.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, definitely came out and hit Dallas in the mouth. The, the Giants have struggled in the red zone. They struggled in the red zone in this game. So they just said, we're not going to get there. We're not even going to go down there. We're just gonna, just going to have deep passes and we're not even going to touch that side of the field. And yeah, I think, I think, I think they did hit Dallas in the mouth. I think they expected, I think Dallas expected for those guys, Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, those gentlemen to get after it. But really what, what made the difference was Russell Wilson. I thought he put together one of the best games I've seen him play in quite some time. He sat back there in the pocket, was patient and made some big throws downfield when he needed to. And it, it really put this Dallas defense on. The only thing that helped you was the fact that the offense was able to most of the time respond. But I know coach is going to talk about it. That does put a lot of pressure on your offense to have to score every time they touch the ball. But the penalties and all that stuff didn't help today either. It didn't help the team overall either.
Jeff
Yeah. Coach, you back with us?
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Yeah. You guys got me.
Jeff
Yeah.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
You got me.
Aisha Morrison
Yes, sir.
Jeff
Yeah.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
All right. Yeah. You know, you make great points. You know, with how the offense played. Special teams, to me, other than Brandon Aubrey was bad.
Aisha Morrison
Oh, my God.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
I mean, they.
Aisha Morrison
It was bad.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
I think letting them get the ball at a 40, 38 yard line, I mean, it was. And Dallas, it was very, very, very tough to win. Watch, probably like my feet is right now here in wfaa. Tough to watch.
Jeff
Well said. Well said. Well, you know, the offense was a little. I mean, they played so great in the first half last week in Philly. They really took them. Took them a few drives to finally kind of get it going in the game today. But to your point, early on, Aisha, I thought Javante Williams looked great. Loved the little screen pass that he had early in the game to kind of get things going. But coach, like you said, I mean, he ran really, really hard. Just missed 100, found the end zone, and, you know, I think that's one thing to get really excited about for.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Yeah, I mean, getting a hat on. A hat is a big deal in the run game, and the Cowboys were able to do that multiple times. And so you have to feel strong about this offensive line. You have to feel good about. Yeah, they gave up a couple of pressures, but they also did a pretty decent job at times, passing off stunts and doing those kind of things. So I. I'm going to. I'm going to say that offensively, especially with the front and you. You've got a couple of good football games behind you, and I. I expect them to keep getting better. I really do. I think the Arrows up for the offensive line now. Does it concern me that we still have some drop passes? Yes. That's got to get cleaned up, too. There's things you can point to and you can work out. Offensively, I'm just going to go back and say it's hard to score 32 to 35 points in the NFL. And you know what? That's where the Cowboys are, and that's where they're going to be for a while.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, the offense.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
And I'm saying that because of their.
Aisha Morrison
Lack of defense Yeah, I mean, the offense doesn't seem like they can take drives off. Now, I. I do think that the. The Dallas offensive line did find rhythm in some of these drives, but there was times where early in that game we saw a Cooper BB Struggling with Dexter Lawrence getting the ball off at the sn. Some high snaps from him, and we know that that throws off the. The quarterback's rhythm and get to his drops. That was something that we saw also, too. You know, BB Goes down. That's a big part. Sounds like he has a lateral ankle sprain. Gonna get a little bit more information probably in the morning on his timetable and stuff, but from my knowledge, it was very swollen and he wasn't. He was. He left on crutches because it was. It's that bad. So that's something to keep an eye out on. But Brock Hoffman comes in the game. Snaps are a little funky, too, you know, So I do think with BB Being out, there is going to have to be some adjustments. I agree with you, coach. I think that the team handled some of those stunts and those pass offs a little better. Specifically that interior. Your tackles, your tackles struggled today. I think the Cowboys tried to do some things, bouncing to the outside, trying to set up the screen game. Oh, sorry. All right. Can you hear me?
Jeff
Yeah, we can hear you. I. I think that was in the background there.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Go ahead.
Aisha Morrison
Okay. Yeah, but I think that. I think the Cowboys were trying to set up the screen game. They were trying to do some things, just throwing the ball to the outside, getting some blocking on the outside, and. And the Giants DBs just ate that up. And the tackles were not able to time some of these outside blocks well enough where they weren't stealing. And that's where you got so many negative plays today. So I do think the tackles are going to have to be better. I think the tackles are going to have to play a little bit more sound moving forward.
Jeff
Yeah, good point. Thanks for working it in there. There we go. There we go.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Yeah, my gut. My gut feeling, too, is that you make a good point about the tackles. They've also got to learn how to anchor when it. When they're getting bull rushed. I can't shove the back in there. And so I think with. With guiding, I think he'll continue to get better. Steel. Let's not kid ourselves. He's a free agent. I mean, I love him, and I think he's. I think he's a good player, but he's going to get. When you get somebody that's really got some it's really got some thump to him. If you don't give him a little help. If you don't chip with the back on the way out or you don't have the tight end over there, he's struggle a little bit. And so, hey, you know what? That's just, that's part of it. I mean, sometimes you eat. The dog eats you. You have to be tough enough to anchor your ass down in there and stop that bull rush. But I just see this offensive line, second game, continue to work together, continue to try to be now with Mark Hoffman in there, hey, try to be five big dancing bears and get yourself to where you're all working as one. That to me, that's very correctable. Those are correctable things and those are correctable mistakes that I believe will be handled.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah. And to your point, coach, with these, with these tackles, I, I do think that you're going to give yourself with seeing how Javante Williams ran the ball. Like you said today, this, with this defense and them trying to figure things out, you need to nourish your run game. I understand that the money's in the, in, in the receiver room and I get that. And I understand that there's a lot of talent in the receiver room. But for what you have, and especially with this defense trying to figure things out, you need to learn how to play keep away.
Jeff
Yeah. Keep them off the field.
Aisha Morrison
You need to learn how to play keep away. Like I said, I, I am at a point too, and I don't know how you feel about a coach and this is no knock to him or anything, but I do think with what you have with Javonte Williams, I want somebody else to match that energy in that backfield. And we're just not seeing it like that yet. Like, we're not seeing, you know, Javante, like, is he even able to take real breathers? I know that Miles Sanders had, you know, the touchdown today, was able to get into the red zone. He had a couple good runs. But how do you feel about this running back room and what they can do to optimize it when you feel like this, this offensive line can run block and Javonte Williams is showing you something.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Well, let me start by saying I think they're two different runners.
Aisha Morrison
Oh, absolutely.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Sanders. Right. Miles Sanders is a patient outside zone runner. He's not afraid to stay out there and chase the hip of the tight end and then hit it in there. Now, today, what I saw today was. You saw, you saw Williams one time, they called that outside and it was hard for him. Boy, he chased the Titan and now he hit it all of a sudden. So those are things that I think one and two, they'll work together. Okay, I know what you're saying, Javante. The way he runs, the way he finishes runs and he needs to be able to then know he can hit it in there with confidence and then take a breather. But they're two different runners and I think the play caller has to become a little bit accustomed to that too. You're not going to. Miles Sanders is not an A gap, B gap runner. He, he is a C, D and outside runner. Now you got to just know that everybody's gets designed on what they can do and then that's the reason they call you a coach is because then you got to put those players in position to go and do the things that they can do. So I think they'll be okay. Both of those guys are pretty good at pass protection and both of them are able to at least understand how to dual read in situations. Situations where they're looking one to two, inside to outside.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah. And speaking of putting guys in position, Kevonte Turpin obviously went out of the game with, I, I don't know, it sounds like he was dealing with something like a neck injury. Talked to Jane Slater leaving the, leaving the locker room and he was saying that he felt fine. It sounds like a little like a stinger, but we'll get more information here soon. I'm just talking, but some of the things he was able to do, attack in the middle of the field, some of the favorable matchups they were able to find with him. We've been waiting for a while with Kevonte Turpin to be more involved in this offense and I think that we got to see a little more of a glimpse of that today and some of his usage. 4 for 47 today from a receiving standpoint. And so I, I think that that's something when you talk about coach, knowing your personnel, knowing how to use them, knowing when to deploy them, I think that, you know, Kevonte Turpin's usage was helpful today for this offense as well.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Yeah. And you know, getting him the football some in space is what you want to do now. If you know when you do that, it's a risk reward proposition. Right. Because he's an undersized guy and you run him down in there, he's probably going to get popped and then, you know, there's a chance with all of that. But I still think that you know, hey, let's use, you know, put Flournoy in there. Put one of those other guys that's a special teams player and, and let him become comfortable doing some of that. Let, let Albert become comfortable doing some of that. We saw him inside block today on power by Tolbert, so you know what? He's tough enough to do that. Let. He got the juice that Kevonte has. No, but again, I think Schottenheimer will become more comfortable using his personnel as, as we go on here. And it's the second game they didn't do, they didn't do jack except a joint practice with the Rams so that they're, they're still trying to figure their way out too.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, and they're still also still trying to figure out how to integrate, integrate George Pickens into this offense. It, it seems like he's going to be a, a, a slant master and a DPI drawer, you know what I'm saying? Like, because that, that's, I guess teams are just like, okay, well, we're not gonna let you guys get a connection, so anytime he gets downfield, we're just going to interfere him. So you got so Dak and him don't, don't get on the same page, but man, yeah, they're still looking for that deep past to, to come to fruition, but got to see him at the red zone play towards the end of the game. Got to see him get the plans, use his body to wall off guys and get some first, first down yardage. I think he slowly but surely is going to be integrated into this offense a little bit more. And that should help you out as well because people are going to have to allocate resources, but they're still trying to work to get that connection on the field to be a little bit more consistent as well.
Jeff
I felt like, I felt like he kind of came out a little bit today, George. I, I much better today. Much. I already saw improvement from last week. He ended up with five catches for what, 68 yards. CD had nine for 112 over 100. Well, I didn't realize they threw six to Javonte Williams, so that was, that was good. But I think to your point too, what you were talking about earlier, Aisha, about the run, I mean, I don't think ideally, especially considering Brian Schottenheimer made it clear that he really wanted to run the football and that's always been his pedigree. Dak throwing the ball 52 times is not, it's not what you want to Do. Obviously they had to come back today and they needed him to do that. But in a perfect world there'd be a little more balance. And to your point, I think with this defense you can, I mean look at the Giants. I mean that open their opening drive was nine minutes. I mean that, that talk about setting the tone for the defense and kind of gassing them early. So they need the offense to kind of balance that out a little bit and give, give their D a little bit of a break.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Hello.
Old Spice Announcer
Listen to my voice talking to you about the new Old Spice NFL collection at Walmart. Now listen to my smell. I smell like NFL stars Jared Goff, CD Lamb, Saquon Barkley, CJ Stroud and George Kittle. I smell like greatness. Why? Because I'm wearing Old Spice's new NFL collection. How can you put the greatness of the NFL into a smell, you ask? You can't. But Old Spice can and they did. Smell like suntoulin speed, driftwood and drive, sea ties and toughness with the Old Spice NFL collection available at Walmart. Smell like the greatest smell in the NFL with Old Spice.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah. Oh, sorry. I was waiting for Cody.
Jeff
Okay, that's all, that's all.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Oh, I, you know, yeah, you give somebody almost nine minute drive and then you go three now and it's not very good and then you give them another drive in. Yeah, that's a, that's a little flare for the obvious. Yeah, keep the damn football. I hear you. But I'm also going to say this, that it's hard to balance yourself out running and throwing the football when you're behind in the game and you're always chasing, chasing the first down and trying to chase them.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, a lot of penalties in this game as well. Dallas had a pretty good showing last week in the penalty department. Only four penalties last week, baby. It was flags flowing every, throwing everywhere. I was, it looked like somebody was praise dancing out here. The refs look like they were literally like doing like with the flags throwing today. I mean just a terrible game from a penalty standpoint. I know coach, you talked about, that's another thing too, Coach, you talked about, you know, the penalties on special teams. You haven't shown you can stop these people and you giving them short yards every time because of the penalties on special teams. They gotta, they, that special teams is a portion of the game that I feel like kind of gets overshadowed sometimes. But there's so much hidden yardage in that part of the game. And man, when the Cowboys look back and see how Many yards they gave up in short fields. They gave these people and not made them drive the length of the field. It's gonna hurt them. So that is a part of the game that I feel like they have to fix, especially in reference to this defense needing some help. So I, I just, I was disappointed in also the penalties today, the untimely ones and the ones that really stalled drives when you needed them, and just some of the bonehead stuff they did today.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Yeah, I mean, let's think about it now. Second game, you're gonna, you're gonna have some of that again. I think you're going to have a little bit of that. And part of that is you should have played, you should have played one or two series in the preseason. I, I'm still going to preach that because I think it helps. It helps. They had to take a time out early in the games. They didn't have enough on the field to punt the football. I think it was the first possession, I believe they, they, when they went forward on that fourth down or they, they tried to sneak it on the fourth down, they didn't get it off on time. I think they had to call a timeout, I think to get to, to get 12, I mean, to get 11. They had 12 or. I don't even know what they did. They, they couldn't punt the football. They took a timeout. All that stuff has to get cleaned up. And covering kicks is a big deal right now with this rule change. It is a big deal. You just, you just hammered the end zone. Yeah, you hammered the end zone. You're giving away one first down before you ever get started. And then, hell, and then they had a penalty one time. They gave him 50, came out supposed to ball, came out to the 40 yard line. And so it's just that to me, though, that's inexcusable. You talked about it, Aisha. Hidden yards. Yeah, don't, don't, don't give away that kind of stuff. So I'm sure that they'll look at it and get it corrected and get those things corrected, but, man, am I, I can't get over, I can't get over the secondary play. I really can't. It's like I can't even. I'm not gonna sleep well tonight without a couple Melatonin thinking about this guy just running through the defense.
Aisha Morrison
No, I mean, it was, it, it was that bad. And, and, and what made it the worst is the fact that, you know, the offense was answering the bell. You know, like the Giants will score. Dallas will put together a really good drive. A mixture of runs, passes. They looked efficient. They were three or three in the red zone today. And then you just are not covering a bomb to. To Malik neighbors in the red zone. And it wasn't even that it wasn't covered. It's just the fact that these guys were just. It just seemed like they were a tick late all day in their rotations. And so I, I want to get a little bit more information. Information about what was going on. Yeah, but. Yeah, that's it is. The secondary is concerning at this point. At this point.
Jeff
All right. When we come back, I want to talk some more, a little bit more about the offense and I know some people are asking some questions. We'll get to those as well. Also, Jerry Jones made an announcement after the game. I think we need to get into that a little bit. So we'll do that coming up. Great to be with you on this Sunday night. Cowboys get the first win. James Hudson of the Giants getting four penalties on their opening drive. That's awesome. He deserves an award. Number two, though. In the first half, there was that one play when there were three penalties against the Giants and one against CD Lamb for going like this when he was on the ground. They call that unsportsmanlike. Now, I, I'm not a, I'm not a math major, but like, you have three penalties and then you have one that shouldn't Offset three to one. Should. You should still get one.
Aisha Morrison
Jeff, do the, do the, do the thing again. How he do it? Well, first of all, it pissed me off because they're gonna offset and they're gonna. You're gonna get the ball at the one.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
And.
Aisha Morrison
And again, like coach was talking about, it's a small thing, but it's a big thing in the grand scheme of things because now you have to figure you could be at the one and just pound the rock in. So I, I hated the call in itself and I hated that CD did it. But yeah, Jeff, you doing it, demonstrating it is killing me.
Jeff
Am I like totally off?
Aisha Morrison
No, no, you're doing it right. That's what's funny. But no, yeah, like that first. Hey, listen, those first couple drives by the Giants, if they did not have the penalties, they had. The penalties helped you out and. And them having to kick field goals at that time. So I mean, that's a part of the game. Like coach says, people making mistakes. You know, Hudson is filling in right now because their star tackle is injured coming off the list. Frank. But yeah, it was, it was ugly. It was ugly. But for the rest of the game, those tackles seem like they didn't really have any trouble. For real.
Jeff
Yeah. Really quick, like what you got kind of put things in perspective. I just got some breaking news that Joe Burrow, his turf toe injury is like grade three. He's going to be out like three months. So that's a real bummer for the Bengals and for Joe.
Aisha Morrison
Three months?
Jeff
Yeah.
Aisha Morrison
Coach, can you explain?
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Well, it's when you. It's when you jam that, that where your big toe, your great toe, where you jam it in that socket and it gets, it gets jammed up in there. Now, I can tell you that a lot of guys, a lot of guys used to actually, and I did this when I was playing. You would wear a half size shoe smaller than your foot. You take an exact knife and you would cut an X on the top of that toe so that your toe, when you stabbed into the turf, your toe kind of had a little area to bend, a little area to give. When it doesn't give and it keeps getting jammed and jammed, then that's when you get what they call turf toe. Now here's the hardest part about all of that is you don't get any farther from your heart than to your toe. And so that's why it's so hard to heal it. And it's so hard, it takes so long. So they're going to go in there and do the surgery, which, you know what, once you kind of have turf toe like, it, it'll, like, mark my words, Brock Purdy, like he's got a turf toe issue. It'll be a problem for a while for him. And it's, it's really unfortunate because I know Cincinnati had played Joe some in the preseason because they were wanting to get off to a better start than they had the last year years. And now here they have that. So that's, that's a terribly, terribly unfortunate situation.
Aisha Morrison
It is. It's a bummer. Yeah, it's a bummer.
Jeff
Well, let's talk about Dak and his performance again, kind of, kind of choppy at times. Again, great first half in Philadelphia. I was, I, I refer to the NFL as the no favorites league. And so you knew the Giants were going to come in kind of loose and that's exactly how they played. But to Dax credit, the way that he came back, thought he settled down after the first half and had, was able to scramble, made some big throws and I, I thought he, I thought he played really well. And just the fact that he pulled that out made sure that they got the win again week two, like we've all said. But that was a big, good next step for him bouncing back.
Aisha Morrison
What you got, Coach.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Waiting on you to go. I was going to hold the door open.
Aisha Morrison
I want to hear what you think about the quarterback. I got you.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
You know, I think he has a real comfort level throwing deep overs. You saw that today. CD Was bracketed a couple of times. Then he hit Pickens later in the game. I think there are certain throws that Dak is really good at that happens to be one of them. And then I think there are throws that he's still uncomfortable with, like he tried to press the ball into the dig window and got the ball intercepted. To me, those are risk reward propositions. A lot of times that I wish he wouldn't take. If you look at a lot of his receptions, they're in the middle of the field. And so I think it's things you got to continue to work on. But at the end of the day, I've been openly critical about, critical about the money that he makes and, you know, is it worth the situation? And guess what? He showed me in two weeks that he is a leader on this football team. He's shown me in two weeks that this football team believes in him. And then today he could have thrown that, that inside slot slant to CD Instead, he pulled the football down and stuck it up in There got the yardage and then they were able to kick. To kick it. So I think you're seeing Dak take the reins of this football team. And I wasn't sure that he had, he really had that in him. And he's proven. Proving me wrong because he, he does show the leadership quality that you want to see. And he's got to continue to tighten up his throws and his ability to take risks in the middle of the field.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, I mean, he's a. Dak is a bit of a risk taker and definitely if, if you, if you run in that seam route for him, you better make sure your chin straps on tight. So. I get what you're saying, Coach. And, and, and you know, you talk about some of the throws that he does well, you talked about the deep overs and attacking some of the middle of the field. Deep overs were something that I was crying and snotting for last year with someone like a Brandon Cooks, you know, like that, those type of things. And even talking to the time that I've been able to spend talking to secondary players, that is one of the hardest thing for corners to defend because they have to cover a lot of ground and they have to, they have to literally like follow the receiver all the way across the field. So not only are you working them, you also are tiring them out doing those things. So I hope that Dallas continues to, like you said, coach, lean on some of the stuff that he does well. You talked about the poise that he had in the third and fourth quarter. If I'm not mistaken, he was 10 of 15. Well, 5 of 20, rather. 187 yards, one touchdown to finish that game. He put together some drives in, in that fourth and fourth quarter and overtime that really willed these guys and he had poise. Another thing that stands out to me as well is the fact that the. He's still trusting these guys. He talked about it this week. Even though some of these guys have had the drop season, they need to figure that out. Jake Ferguson with some key drops in this game. Obviously the CD Lamb had a drop. Jalen Tolbert had a drop. Like for him to stay consistent and still be trusting those guys, trusting his reads, I think it speaks to him and the confidence that he has in the guys. And I agree with you. I felt more confident knowing that he's capable. I'm feeling more confident knowing that he's capable of taking over games when he needs to and driving this team downfield when they need to go get points. So I thought the Showing overall from him was good. I did not like Coach. You talk about throws that maybe he's not the great at, the best at, and some of those outside throws, like, some of those ones he's having to get. Yeah. Where he's having to get the ball out really quickly. Some of those balls were a little like. And he's just dumping it off, right. Like, he's just taking what, you know, he's just taking what the defense is giving him. But I feel like if he would deliver the ball a little faster, those running backs and stuff that are there kind of waiting for those passes will be able to get up field a little further. So I want his timing to improve on those things as well as, well, code.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
There we go. Yeah. Confidence is a big thing. Confidence in your receivers, confidence in knowing where they're going to be, having the confidence to lay the ball outside and let your guy go to it. You saw him do it one time to Tolbert. Tolbert dropped the football. I mean, he laid it right where only Tolbert could get it. And so, yeah, you just got to keep working. And that's something we keep pointing to. Certain things that I think they'll get better at. They'll get better at understanding where they need to be. And I think Dak can deliver those. Can deliver those balls. At times, does he tend to sail the high corner or what I call a sail route, which is it? And break it. And I.
Jeff
He.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
He will do that some. And then there's other times where he puts a little bit too much air on the deep ball. I wish he drive the deep ball more. But, hey, we could sit here and nitpick all of that. At the end of the day, he's. He's done a good enough job to win two football games.
Aisha Morrison
You right, you right, you right, you right. You're right. We being nitpicky. Well, I know that, Jeff, you was about to get into the. You know, Jerry, y'. All. Jerry's so dramatic. Why Jerry, wait. To the end of the game, Jerry's so dramatic. I'm probably gonna have to see him in this week. But, yeah, the game ends. Everybody's, you know, kind of on a high because of how the game wins. And then Jerry, in the scrum right afterwards goes, we just signed you. Davion. Clowning. You know what, Jerry? So what. How. What do you gentlemen feel about the signing? And, you know, do you think this helps the defense? Oh, I know you wanted to talk about it. Sorry. I know you.
Jeff
No, no. I just need to Take one. We take our final break. So we'll do that. We'll do that when we come back. No, no, you're good. No, you're good. We'll, we'll, we'll talk about that. The Jerry Jones News. Look ahead to the Matt Eberfluous bowl coming up next Sunday night. So. Or next Sunday. Not Sunday night. Sunday afternoon later game. So we'll do that coming up next. Cowboys win though. They get their first win of the season. Get their first win for Brian Schottenheimer. This is the Cowboys squad show.

Two huge kicks for Brandon Aubrey. 40 to 37. The final score. And then Aisha, as you said after the game, Jerry Jones meeting with the media as he does after after games. Oh, by the way, we signed former number one pick Judevion Clowney. I, I, I'm assuming I, you know, they would have shown Davion if he was in the, in the box with him, right? But kind of got the sense maybe, I don't know. Do you think, you think Judevion was texting with them during the game and said okay, all right. I mean because he probably saw hey, I could, I could help here. They need a pass rusher.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, he was in the building this week. He was there all day. All day. Sounds like his workout went really, really well. Cowboys wanted to sign him then and there. He was like I need to think about it. Let me go away my options, you know. So I think maybe, maybe that this was something. They had been talking about it all through the weekend, heard different reports about it that their intention and their desire was to sign him. And I do believe that as of right now, if you are going to try to have help your pass rush before, you know, I mean in this point in the season, then this was the best option. Right now it sounds like the deal is 1 year, 3.5, 3.5. And it sounds like they do. They are kind of looking to see how he performs to possibly do something for next year too. So yeah, he's an addition. And I don't know what do you, what do you think coach about Jadevion Clown enjoyed in this Dallas pass rush?
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
I mean, you know he can help. I mean he's a big guy that can still run. He's still got great flexibility in his ankles and what is he 31 years old? Maybe 32 years old. So he's not, I mean he's not too what I would consider long in the tooth. Do I think they're going to be able to put immediate, you know, 45 snaps on him? No, but I do think he can. He can as far as how he could put some heat on the quarterback. So it was my understanding they wanted to that initially the Cowboys about a one year deal they came to when they released the details of the contract. But I mean today's on Clowney is a big human being that can still run. And guess what? If he wants to play and he gets his motor going, he can still play and he can contribute in this situation.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, yeah. I mean I looked at Clowney, I looked at about three games of him last year. You see a lot of effort. You see the backside pursuit still he. You talked about his flexibility stretch. He's not as bendy as he used to be, but he does still have some balance to bend the corner. A lot of his pass rush is built, is really pushed through with his power. That's kind of how he's winning these days is obviously some of the hand tech but a lot of power. I do think that he is a gentleman. That helps you in the run game, one of the best, better edge defenders against the run from that position. So you get some experience in that room like you said. You get a veteran presence in that room like you said. You just get another guy, you just get another look for defenses to have to deal with. Because right now what you're seeing is that teams are not your, your, your edge players are not winning one on one on their own. They're not, they're, they're not winning consistently on their own. And you have a lot of powerful edge rushers, but not that you don't really have any speedy, bendy edge rushers. And that is kind of limiting a lot like teams are, are doubling your interior players. They're not, they're not doubling your, your, your ends or trying to do extra stuff. So I'm looking at James. Houston got a little bit more snaps today. We got to see him have a little bit of an uptick. I think that they value what he can do as a rusher. Maybe get clowny in here. Donovan is a Rocku. The rookie had a couple plays in the red zone. 2, 2 back to back plays. I thought that maybe was his best series as a cowboy so far. Still early, just being a little bit smarter with his hands. Sometimes he can get a little late with his hands. Sometimes he can get caught up with some of these bigger tackles. So this edge room definitely needs a little bit of a boost right now and it's gonna take somebody, somebody's gonna have to step up in that edge room and demand some respect from opposing offenses. So this interior can also benefit as well.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
I agree with you. I mean, you know, rotationally y' all want to see, I want to see Dante play a little better as a rock. Who? Light ass. 240. He's light ass. He's going to struggle and he's gonna struggle setting the edge where Clowney is. 275, 280. So you know, you're talking about a size difference there. So to me, Ezraku is an edge rusher in, in nickel situation situations. I don't, I don't expect him to be some sort.
Jeff
All right, coach, I think the only thing worse than the secondary might be this connection we've had tonight. But we, we've grinded through it and that's, that's a good thing and I.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
I, I apologize and hopefully we don't have to do this again because this is, that's right.
Jeff
Well, that's my fault. My fault. Not your fault. So, hey, so before we Go. Final thoughts. So you got the Matt Eber flu spl. Next Sunday, Cowboys at Chicago. The Bears are. I mean, they got. You talk about getting lit up. I mean, they were lit up by the Lions today in Detroit. Dropped a 50 burger on them. So you got that part of it. But for the Cowboys and for the defense, specifically for Matt Eberfluz, I mean, a great opportunity to bounce back and really step up and try to get a dominant performance for him.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah, I don't want this to be a. A game where the Bears are, like, trying to. Clearly, they're gonna be trying to get right. We hope that they get wrong again. So I'm hoping.
Jeff
Keep them down.
Aisha Morrison
Yeah. So, yeah, I'm. I like. Like coach talked about, there's a lot of stuff that these guys are gonna, over time, get better at. Hopefully they're able to clean up the penalties. Hopefully this. This secondary has better communication and they play for each other next week. I can't wait to get more into the matchup in the film this week, and we'll see how it goes.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Hard to win in the NFL, so you think hard to win here. Be thankful you're one and one and, you know, go see if you can. Go see if you can get yourself in position to win a game. It won't be easy. I promise you that. I don't care how many they gave up to Detroit. I don't care if, you know, Caleb Williams is painting every fingernail and every toenail. Will be hard to go in there.
Jeff
And win, but nice. All right, on that note, Coach, thank you. Crush it on TV tonight. We'll look forward to seeing you and we'll. We'll talk again on Wednesday. Thank you. Hey, Aisha, one more for you.
Glenn 'Stretch' Smith
Sorry. Sorry for the. Sorry.
Aisha Morrison
Oh, you okay, man?
Jeff
We love you, coach. We love you. Thank you. Aisha, one more for you. Before we go. Have you heard anything on Jaden Blue? I mean, is he.
Aisha Morrison
They're keeping. They're keeping it really close to the vest, whatever it is going on. I'm gonna try to see a little bit more this week. I was hoping he was gonna go this week. And that's what I meant when I said. I feel like I tweeted today. I said, javonte Williams is. He still has some juice. This guy can still play. He's two years removed from the ACL injury. It's no knock to. To Miles Sanders, but if you are going to have a change of pace back, then they need to actually change the damn pace, and that's not unfortunately. Miles Sanders doesn't. Even though he is an outside zone runner and stuff, he does not have the same breakaway speed and you need those explosives in the run game. So I'm really hoping that they're able to figure out how to integrate him into this offense because I do believe that those two guys can be a really good one to punch. But the kid has to know his pass blocking assignments, his pass pro assignments. He has to be able to contribute on special teams and if they don't feel like he's ready to do that yet, then I understand that. So it's kind of a bummer because I think he could help. But we'll find out. We'll find out what's really going on pretty soon, I think.
Jeff
All right, Aisha, great job as always. Have a great week. Look forward to talking to you again after the Cowboys and the Bears. Appreciate you. Great job. Thank you to everybody for getting in. Thank you for all the comments. Everybody weighing in. Alf, Shirley, Mark to Cowboys Kip, we appreciate you guys. Roland, Mario, Eileen, thank you. Thanks for getting in and we'll do it again next Sunday. Don't forget the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast with Marcus moer and Landon McCool. They're going to have their breakdown and everything else going on this week, but hey, Cowboys got their first win. You got to win. It's all about the wins. And they did so today. They beat the giants in overtime 40 to 37. This has been the Cowboys squad show.

In this episode of the Cowboys Squad Show, the crew discusses the Dallas Cowboys’ dramatic 40-37 overtime victory against the New York Giants – their first win of the season and first under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. The team dives into the highs and lows of the game, analyzing key performances, addressing persistent defensive concerns (especially in the secondary), the evolving offense, the impact of injuries, and the breaking news of Jadeveon Clowney’s signing. The Cowboys’ first win of 2025 was as stressful as it was necessary. The hosts celebrate key individual performances (Dak Prescott, Javonte Williams, Brandon Aubrey) and the resilience to win, while sounding the alarm on persistent and systemic issues in the secondary and with defensive communication. The addition of Jadeveon Clowney is welcomed as a needed jolt to the pass rush. Improvement is required—especially as they head to Chicago—but for now, the win keeps hopes and expectations alive in Dallas.
For ongoing analysis, the crew will provide film breakdowns and updates through the week on the daily Locked On Cowboys podcast.
