After you play your first $5 lineup, we start with a welcome to the co hosts of the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast, Marcus moer and Landon McCool and of course former Cowboys coach Glenn Stretch Smith. All right, got a lot to talk about. Feeling pretty good after a big win over the Commanders last week. Coming up on today's show, we're going to get ready for Javante Williams and his return to Denver. The latest on this kind of strange Trevon Diggs story that just keeps kind of getting weirder as each day goes by. And the Cowboys had a nice surprise at practice yesterday, which I can't wait to talk about. And even more trade rumors. Coach, you mentioned it. So we a lot to get to NFL trade deadline less than two weeks away. But guys want to start with the two of you. Marcus and Landon, a lot of positives from Sunday's win over the Commanders. What stood out to both of you?
B
For me it was the defense at least looked competent. They got like multiple stops in a row. They were flying around, they were making tackles in the backfield. They were actually getting pressure. Now they gave up their fair share of big plays, but it was the first time all year where Matt Eber Fluss and his group looked aggressive. And this is the type of defense we were hoping to See, we knew that they were going to struggle to get stops and that they weren't going to be a top 10 ranked unit or anything, but at least be aggressive. And we saw that work out to their benefit. And here in week seven, we'll see if that continues. But I think this, for the first time all year, I felt encouraged about the direction of the defense.
C
Yeah, I hate, I hate that, you know, this offense is so good that we don't have to talk about it sometimes. And I hate that.
A
Right.
C
Like, because, you know, you just kind of set it and forget it. But, you know, it would be hard not to mention the defense. I mean, the defense is really what's, I mean, you kind of expected the offense to be able to do what it was going to do considering that, you know, what it had done the previous weeks without CD Lamb and without Tyler Booker and then to get those guys back, you know, you felt like they were going to have success. And we, we talked about it, how it, it all kind of came down to how this defense played. And, and to be honest, the defense did just enough to, to win the game. And I think that's what we've been asking for. And, and I'm sure we'll break it down even further. But it's not even just that the output was better, it's how they played. You know, it's, it's the things that we asked for. It's the more man coverage. It felt like there was more blitzing, there was more blitzing than there was in the previous weeks. So, and I, and I think some of the personnel stuff, so I just think that, you know, again, it's. The offense is so incredible that we, that it's a shame that we don't talk about that, you know, because we, we're so concerned about what's going on with the defense. But to me, the difference between this week and last week was certainly the way the defense performed.
B
Hey, Jeff, do you know how I know the defense was way better this week is I didn't get a call from Stretch halfway through the game complaining about the coverage and the leverage. So apparently it must have been significantly better to not get that Stretch radar.
D
I'll tell you what I am going to do though, is we, we one of these four guys in this panel right here goes out to training camp and evidently doesn't know what the hell he's looking at because it took seven weeks into the season for them to finally play the correct leverage. I don't know what, I don't Even, I mean it really is. It's one of those things, I'm joking about Landon, but it's one of those things that absolutely blows me away that for the first time you could see guys at least trying to funnel guys where their help came from, at least trying to move receivers off of the spot, at least getting guys in an uncomfortable situation. It's not like this is the first time they, you know, going to have played a quarterback who could run around and do those kind of things. I thought that finally they, they and it's almost like are they listening to this podcast? Because finally something happens where you feel good about what they did, you feel good about how they played. I think it's interesting, I heard Landon say they blitzed. I, you know, to me a blitz is more than your five down can take care of, but it felt like seeing that with four plus an add on guy in the situation. So hey, I, I, I, I, I'm with you. They, they brought some other guys and at least they got themselves in position fellas to get off the field in third down. Because my message to them as a defensive coach, which, you know, they're looking at the film too on the other side of the ball, they see how good they are offensively. My message would be, hey guys, every time that we can get them off the field, guess what we got. It's the theme of the day, Gambling, by the way.
C
Well, you should gamble.
D
Hey, by the way, it gets extra tips put in the machine every time we can get off the field.
C
All right, look, I gotta defend myself here first. First of all, first of all, 22% blitz rate is not very much, but it certainly is double what the Cowboys were doing every other previous week. And I'll also say that myself and Trayvon Diggs had the same number of training camps, camp snaps on the field.
A
Nice.
C
I think, I think that also is contributing to my. And you know, you also notice we also all shared the same number of snaps in Sunday's game as well, which, you know, may be the contributing factor to why the, the defense you're getting.
B
Paid 20 million a year though, right?
A
From.
C
Listen, I, I, I, I'm about as successful with my leverages as the guy getting paid $20 million a year. So yeah, I mean, I don't think that that's a coincidence and I think that that's something to discuss, Gush, because, you know, look, you know, not to lead into the dig stuff that we're going to talk about a little bit later, but I mean, part of you goes into that game and you're worried about the state of your, your defensive backfield and, and suddenly you find out that Trayvon Diggs is not playing. And then obviously you get even more concerned because you, you don't even really know very much about the guys that you're playing out there. And lo and behold, you go out there and, and they play pretty good, maybe better than the guy that you're paying $20 million because if only they're playing the correct leverages like you say. So. Yeah, I don't think it's coincidental, Coach, that, that Trayvon Diggs wasn't out there practicing in training camp with bad leverage. And I didn't see it. And, and he wasn't playing on Sunday against the, the Red, the Commanders, and, and we didn't see it. So, yeah, I think that's what guys.
D
He, you, you may, you may think this is crazy. He made the biggest difference in the game because he came out and challenged the defensive coordinator by saying, we don't know what the hell we are. We don't have an identity.
A
Nice.
C
That's a fair point. Maybe he's, maybe he should just be a coach instead. Maybe that's it. Yeah.
A
So, so, Coach, let me ask you this. I feel like, like Pat Summerall here talking to John Madden, but I feel like we should explain to the audience in layman's terms, when you talk about using the right leverage, I mean, it, it sounds pretty simple and basic enough, but for those watching at home, what do you mean by that? What, what and what, what do they do better?
D
Yeah. The key is, from a defensive back standpoint is where, where do you have, where is your help at? Is your help in a, in a two high safety? Which, A two high safety means the middle of the fields open and you got, you got safeties playing a half field behind you. Is it a single high safety where if you're in man coverage, if your guy gets by you, you want to, you want to move that receiver into your health, you want it. So, for instance, if it's a single highest safety, and I know I've got, if I jump up and I go to jamming, okay, and he gets a great release on me, I can immediately turn and run. But I know at 15 to 18 yards, I got a guy that's coming to help me, so guess what? If they try to stick the ball on him, if he releases inside, I'm funneling him inside. Now if he releases outside, we got problems. And so playing with the correct leverage Is all about how you get yourself in position to funnel the receiver, to take the receiver in the direction you want him to go. Now certainly he can inside release. And you hear all the time, if you're double move, you know, practice or anything, you hear a receiver coach say we'll get up on top of him and stack him. So then you want to get back up on top of that defensive back to move away from his help. But playing with leverage is what is really a day one in OTA's situation. And I think that's the most frustrating thing for me is it's taken to seven games in the season to see a team play with the correct leverage. Now what I don't want to hear is well it wasn't Terry McLaurin or well it wasn't, it wasn't Debo or well, it wasn't Brown. Hey, you know what? I don't give a damn. They're 10 soldiers at the end of the day, if you're lining up with the correct leverage, at least you, you have ground level ability to, to, to help and get your help where your help is coming from. So you just want to play with that leverage understanding I gotta, I gotta funnel guys where my help is. And you'll hear defensive guys say all the time, hey, we want to get more good guys to the spot. They, they turn and run and they, hey, we want to get, you know, we want to see how many guys can get in the film and all those kind of things. And as an offensive guy, you know, you hear, and I used to say it all the time, make sure you switch the ball to your outside arm, get it away from the bad guys. So it's all about rally into the football and it's all about playing with the correct leverage.
B
Coach, did you hear Matt Everfluz's explanation as to why they played more man coverage this week? You're gonna, I can't wait for your response. If you didn't know, if you didn't hear, he said the analytics told them that they needed to play more man coverage against Washington.
D
Right, right. And then, and then, and then, and then the guy. And I mean right after you heard that, then did you hear the let's make the deal, Give it the.
B
No, hey, it worked, right? This is, this is the, the advantage in the, how you can use analytics to your, your benefit. So shout out to John Bark and the analytics team.
C
I also think, I also. Yeah, no kidding. I also think that that coach is being a little kind even because this is. Yes, obviously this gets taught day one of OTAs, but. But this also gets taught to you, like, the third day that you play defensive back in any level of football. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, Trayvon Dix was coached by Nick Saban. You know, there's no way he didn't get taught this. Like, so, yeah, I mean, like, this. This is very fundamental stuff, even if it doesn't, you know, to the layman, doesn't seem very, you know, obvious. If you're a professional defensive back, if you're a college defensive back, if you're a high school defensive back, you understand how you need to play leverage to operate inside of the larger coverage scheme that your defense is playing. So, yeah, there really was no excuse for. For, like, that kind of breakdown. It's, you know, it's one thing to, like, not hear the call.
D
Okay. And.
C
And you're playing, man, when everyone else is playing zone one or two times. Like, that's not excusable necessarily, but that makes sense at least. Like, I mean, that's a common error that can happen because of communication failures, not playing the correct leverage. If you know what the coverage is, like, 75% of the time. Like, that's like. I mean, what's going on here? Like, you're either freelancing and doing whatever you want, or you don't know what you're doing, or you don't know what you're supposed to be doing. And that last one, like, even for someone like Diggs, who, you know, came to playing defensive backs late in his career, I mean, he came to that in college, not necessarily in high school. He knows the. The understanding of playing with correct leverage to. To funnel the. The receivers into your. Your help and your support. That's very fundamental.
A
All right, didn't Nick Saban. I thought Nick Saban. Didn't he visit Matt Eber Fluss during Hard Knocks last year? I think he.
D
I think he did.
B
Yeah. When he was with the Bears. Yep.
C
Yeah. And listen, Saban's famous for having different ways of dealing with that side saddling. And he's taught different, very different, you know, techniques from other defensive back coaches. But there's no way that he didn't teach the very fundamental of how to operate inside of a coverage system, Right?
A
Absolutely. All right, real quick, before I break, give me some. Some highlights from the offense that stood out to you. I mean, like, like I said so many things. I mean, CD was back. Love seeing CD And Pickens. Dak is just efficient. Javante doing his thing. The old Line was back together. What. What did you guys like?
B
I'll just mention Tyler Booker, first game back, you saw some of the rust for the high ankle injury, but you also see what he brings to this offense, and that's just a level of physicality and power. There were a couple plays where he got a defensive lineman and just absolutely buried them. And you can see the vision of Tyler Smith, Cooper Bibi and Tyler Booker. Once these guys are all healthy and they're playing up to their ability, they're just going to be able to maul dudes up front. I thought it was a pretty good showing overall for Booker.
C
Yeah. And the passing attack is just. It's. It's all that it's cracked up to be. I mean, you know, you've got the two guys. I mean, it's really crazy dangerous in the red zone right where you've got these two big guys on the outside and then you're just working Ferguson in the middle. And I mean, I. There was just two different times where you saw like, the amount of space that Ferguson has to operate with those guys on the outside is. Is just ridiculous. So that's why you're seeing this, like, huge uptick and touchdowns for Ferguson this year is he's got a lot of room to work.
D
Yeah. There. This, this offense, if they can stay relatively healthy, I'm telling you, they are going to give. They're giving defensive coordinators absolute nightmares because you, at this point, with the running game the way it is, with two tight ends the way they are and three tight ends the way they are and depth at the offensive line and hey, you're going to have to pick your poison. Do you want to gamble with. With. With a quick scenario, I'm saying with the. With the ball thrown over the top, or do you want to have patience where guys, the Cowboys will just take it and run the football right at you? I mean, that. It, it. It's. It's. It's a situation that. I don't know. The Cowboys have been in offensively in a very long time.
C
Having both. Having. Having a balanced running attack and a dangerous passing attack. It's been a long time since the Cowboys had an office like that.
A
Nice. All right, Great way to kick off the show. When we come back, we are going to dig in to what's going on with Trayvon Diggs. He was not on the practice. Not looking good for Sunday. We'll do that when we come back. This is the Cowboys squad show.
D
All right.
A
I want to talk to you about Prize Picks because this episode is brought to you by Prize Picks and every day we make decisions. But on Prize Picks being right can actually get you paid. And it's, it's just fun to follow other players in the app and and copy their lineups with one click. And the new injury reboot feature, if your player leaves early and does not return to the game, it won't count against you.
C
So.
A
And they've added this too. There is a a special max discount promotion live on the board right now for the Golden State Warriors. Well, that was okay, never mind that one. But anyway, download the Prize Picks app today. Use code locked on NFL to get 50 in lineups after you play your first five dollar lineup. That's code locked on NFL for $50 in lineups after your first five dollar lineup prize picks. It's good to be right. Okay, we are back. The Cowboy squad show Marcus Mosier, Landon McCool and the coach, Glenn Stretch Smith. All right, we were talking about the win over the commanders on Sunday, 44 to 22. Trayvon Diggs did not play and is still in the concussion protocol after suffering an injury in his home a week ago. And he was not, he was a DNP at practice again today. Guys. I mean, what do you make of this? And are you surprised at all that we really know much about what's going on or what?
C
Go ahead, Landon. This is the weirdest like thing, right? Because it's like, I don't know, it feels like we're being told that there's something weird going on, right? And almost like some folks may know what's going on and that it's weird and they're just kind of hinting that it's weird because like, I don't know, it's, it's the fact that there's just like the way everyone has handled the situation and not talking about it is like, that's the weird vibes that I'm getting. Honestly. Like if, if they had just told us that that Diggs had slipped and fell and hit his head, like, I think, you know, we, no one would have questioned it or whatever. I think. And the timeline Isn't weird? Like, if it happened on last Saturday, then. Yeah, he still wouldn't be practicing. Like, so, I don't know, like, I. I can't. I can't get my brain around it because it feels. Feels like something happened that is either embarrassing or, you know, you know, incriminating. Maybe not legally incriminating, but, like, you know, in some other fashion.
B
Something that would be damaging to Diggs. But what if there's a. A worse outcome, which is he doesn't remember? And I think maybe that's the scary part here as well.
C
That's one of the things we talked about. Yeah. Is that, you know, one of the. And Jerry Jones kind of implied that where. When he said that, you know, sometimes that you're not the best witness to what you're doing. And I think a lot of people kind of took that as, I don't know, like, you know, that they didn't trust him. And I think that you're right, Marcus. I think it's a case where, look, he didn't call in. Like, he showed up to work with concussion symptoms. They noticed that he had concussion symptoms, and then they gave him the test and he failed it. And I think that implies that maybe he wasn't even aware that he was concussed.
D
But.
C
Can I.
B
Can we just. I. I don't think this is a. Oh, that's a secret injury. The Cowboys are just trying to soft bench him or not get him hurt so that way they can trade him before the deadline. I don't think it's anything like that.
A
The.
B
The NFL concussion rules are pretty strict, and there's a lot of reporting that has to go on, so I do want to nip that in the butt a little bit. I don't think. I don't think that's the case going on at all. However, Jerry Jones did say he thought they played pretty well without them, and he feels pretty good if they got, you know, if they have to play without him again. And I do wonder if they're already thinking of, like, okay, what does this look like for the rest of this season and long term if Diggs isn't on this roster?
C
I actually wonder if that is.
D
Let me ask you. So let me ask you something. Does this not feel like a. And I'm. And I'm going to look at the entire picture here, because he didn't rehab here. Then he got the fine, then he. Then he felt like he came back early. He was. He was, you know, kind of beating his timetable back on the field. It feels like to me, this is a player versus a management issue. I do. I think that there's. That there's some kind of sleight of hand going on here. I don't. But I do think that when you look at the entire piece of this scenario, he got fined pretty heavily for not spending his rehab time here, yet he was ahead of what was their rehab window. So something in this scenario does not feel good to me.
C
I think that you're right in the sense that I'm sure there is a lack of trust going on right now between Diggs and the medical staff. And look, I mean, I'm kind of on Diggs's side for the way that he handled the training outside the building, because ultimately, at the end of the day, he came back ahead of schedule and the Joneses were wrong and, you know, basically, you know, poo pooed him for not working out with the team for, you know, in the offseason, and he came back probably ahead of where he would have with Brit Brown. And I think, again, it's a commentary on the issue that. That this team has with this training situation. We don't need to get into that. That's a whole other bit of conversation. But there's clearly not a commentary about the quality of Brit Brown necessarily, but. But a just lack of trust that there's enough resources to kind of get these guys going. So I'm wondering if the other scenario that we haven't discussed is maybe Trayvon is not being forthright with what happened to him. And it's not nefarious. It's just that he did concuss himself and he didn't want to tell the medical staff, and he just was trying to get away with it. But I do think you're right, coach, that, I mean, the. That. That whole lack of trust, that backdrop that we've been dealing with between Diggs and. And the Joneses and the Cowboys medical staff, like, that is playing a part into this somehow. But I wonder if it isn't just a, you know, an aspect of this that's kind of complicating it, but not necessarily the driving factor of whatever's going on. I really do believe that he got concussed. I really do do believe that he's, you know, in the concussion protocol. I, I think, you know, the thing that we're all kind of trying to unwind is like, how did this information get unfold? And, and what.
B
Why.
C
Why can't they just accept the answer that. That Trayvon Diggs is giving Them. What is the answer that Trayvon Diggs give them?
A
Why won't they tell us when they.
C
Asked him what happened?
B
Yeah.
C
And why won't they tell us? Yeah.
A
Yeah. I. Look, I, I'm not. I, I don't think any of. I'm not looking to. To pry in his personal life. I'm not looking to go after him or make him look bad or cast judgment or throw stones at him. But I mean, he. When healthy, he is a. He's a great player. Can. And a guy that can help their defense and help them this season. And so to me, I'm saying, look, I mean, you're the Dallas Cowboys, so, I mean, you're. You're America's team. And just this whole secrecy and this, like you said at the outset, the way that it's being handled, it just.
C
Seemed weird, but it was. That's the thing, though. What's weird about it is that it's not secrecy. Like, if they had just told us a lie, everyone would have believed it, and we would have been like, oh, man, like, no digs this week. But it's the way that they're answering these questions and the way they're handling it. The way the Cowboys are handling it.
D
Yeah. What if they don't. What if they don't know? Then. Then.
C
Then either tell us a lie or say no comment. I say, I don't know. But it's like.
B
Like, what if they did tell us a lie? What if they told us a lie that he got hurt at home?
C
Then that should have been enough.
A
Like, maybe that is. That's what they always.
B
I wouldn't be surprised if that is the lie. Right.
C
They come up with a more thorough lie. Well, you know, like, like, you know, come up with a better lie. Like, you're Jerry Jones, for God's sakes. Like, if anything, you should be able to lie. Like, come on.
B
Well, I think the problem is it was Stephen that first announced. Or, no, it was Schottenheimer that first said it Right. At the conference on Friday morning. So maybe that's a bit. I, I just think this. Everything that we've gotten from this digs and Dallas Cowboys situation this year has been weird, whether it's all the things that coach mentioned. Right. I think this is ultimately leading to a divorce at the end of the season.
A
Absolutely.
B
And I think the only thing that I want to know is, is there a chance that that happens before the end of the year happens? And I think we're inching closer. Closer to that. To that.
C
Well, I mean, if there's a couple more games that we get, like, if we go into this game with no Trayvon digs, which. It's trending that way.
D
Yeah.
C
And we win this game and the defense plays as good as it did last week. I mean, the trade deadline's coming up. Buddies. Like, I mean, and there's not a ton of guaranteed money left on Trayvon's deal. Like, I don't know why they wouldn't at least think about it.
D
Like, so go ahead and. Go ahead and do that six, seven, juggling show. Let's see. There you go. That's what applied to this right here. There you go.
A
Let me ask you this, coach, real quick, and then we'll move on. Final question. So, as you pointed out, truthfully, when he spoke out against the defense, what he said was the truth, right? I think we all agree he called out.
C
Yeah.
A
But you. I'm asking you as a coach, you know, the. The whole analogy of handling things and chain of command. Do you think the Cowboys brass is. Was upset that he spoke out the.
C
Way that he did?
A
You know, could that.
D
I'm sure. I'm sure that at the end of the day, you know, they wanted to keep their business in their house and not let that get out there. But I also know that when you're putting up the numbers that you're putting up on one side of the ball, there is natural reaction. I don't care what anybody says. I don't care how the. I don't care how they portray it. At the end of the day, it's 53 guys in there, and you need every 53. All 53 of them need to grab a paddle and get their ass to rowing. And when they're not rowing, the boat's not streamlined. And so I think he was just saying, hey, you know what? We don't have an identity. And I'm going to tell you something. He ain't wrong. He's not.
C
That's the most dangerous thing. Like, and that's why this. If this was a retaliation, that would be stupid, because we talked about it. If they continue to play badly, they're gonna lose the locker room. And the final step to losing the locker room is if one of the players comes out, tells the truth about the problems that are happening on defense, and then you come out and punish them for it, because that's. That's really. That's how you lose the locker room as a coach. So if that's what this is tied about back, I. I just don't think it is. But if that is what this time, this is a real, like a misstep, because that's how you're going to lose the locker room if you're punishing the players for telling the truth with the problems of your defense, or you do.
D
What John Harbaugh did, take the basketball hoops out, take the ping pong tables out. More dominoes.
C
Hey, the players did that, Coach.
A
They.
C
That John Harbaugh came out and said, no, that was the veterans who came out and took away their own ping pong table.
B
Real quick. Do you know why you do that? You know why you take away the ping pong tables and all that stuff?
D
You don't have any answers. I've already heard this. This scenario. Yeah.
B
I told coaches, because you run out of answers on how to actually fix your team. So you're. You're throwing stuff against the wall. So hopefully we don't get to that point.
A
You should have blamed analytics. That's what you should have done.
C
Analytics. Analytics says we got to take the ping pongs away.
A
Yeah.
C
There you go. All right.
A
Well, hey, on a positive note, the Cowboys had a really nice surprise at practice yesterday. My favorite player from last season, demarvan Overshone, was back on the field and he says he is planning on returning for the Monday night game on November 17th against the Raiders after blowing out his right knee. And that's outstanding.
C
Yeah, Huge news. Yeah. I mean, I mean, look, the guy's like a superhero. Like, he just keeps coming back. I mean, they, they shot and I were talked about how he walked into the, the trainer room and they were doing, I think it was box jumps or something like that. He just could not get over how explosive he looked. And, and even Overshot's come out and said that he's, you know, he's stronger, he's more explosive in a measurable way, you know, than he was previously. So, you know, I, I think the thing that Marcus and I have been talking about for, for the last few weeks about Overshone's return is that we're scared that, like, you know, the amount that's going to be heaped upon him to come in right away and perform. And. But if you listen to Marvin, you know, and I was. If I, if you listen to the Barbie on Over shown, the dude is heaping even more than that on him on the expectation level. He is cranking it. So. Which, I mean, again, really, I, I had forgotten, like, how just inspiringly awesome demarvi on Overshot was as an interview if you haven't had a chance, go listen to him talk about it. But the guy just has the right attitude to attack this and, and I'm no longer scared about it because I mean, if anything he's gonna, you know, he's gonna drive himself to go that crazy.
A
Marcus, what do you think, buddy?
B
I'm just nervous. I, I, I love Overshone so much, but I just hope fans just, they don't expect him to be the savior of this defense because they've got so many other issues going on right now. I hope the expectations are somewhat rational. We know that fans don't really operate that way. I hope the Cowboys don't put 60 snaps a game on his plate, but I'm very excited to see it back on the field because I remember when he got hurt, it felt like he was going to miss all the 20, 25 season and beyond. The fact that there's a very good chance that we see him in a few weeks is incredible.
A
I love it.
D
Yeah. I mean they've got multiple needs on defense and you know what? They don't. Again, just a little improvement is all we need right now. Just one more critical stop and a game. Just one more tipped pass. Just one more scenario. And do I think it's going to be the answer for the defense? No. I mean let's again, Marcus and I talk about this all the time. Let's be honest. They busted on a first round draft pick and Mozzie Smith, but busted two second round draft picks. They have and it's costing them. And I'm not saying that Mozzie may not can fit in in, in a situation. I don't know. He's been with three different defensive coordinators. Am I willing to say and call him just a, just a situation that's done. I'm not. But what I am saying is when you have picked guys early in the draft that aren't contributing right now, especially on that side of the ball, it's really hurting you.
A
Yeah, great point. Great point. I should point out also, the Cowboys opened up the 21 day window for Cooper Beebe and Siobhan Revelle as well this week.
B
It sounds like Bibi's gonna play. He's been really.
A
Yeah.
B
Active in trying to get there. Savon Ravel. I still think we're at least three weeks away. I wouldn't be surprised if they activate Ravel, but he's like a healthy scratch. Remember, he didn't do anything in training camp. They're going to want to get him up to Speed. He's a, yeah, small school guy, but excited that he's back.
A
All right. And then one, one little note from practice today. We talked about Trayvon Diggs. Left tackle Tyler Guyton appeared on the report afterwards today as limited with a glute issue.
B
Is it glute? Your thigh, butt area, Right? My glute hurts. After doing these squad shows sometimes.
A
I thought that, well, coach, coach can get out.
D
Yours hurts and mine itches. What's the difference?
C
Tyler, don't scratch.
A
Okay. All right.
C
I mean, he was limited, so at least he wasn't out.
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Probably just resting him for, for Sunday. All right. When we come back, we're going to turn the page and get ready for week eight, the mile high matchup. Welcome back to the cowboy squad show. Marcus Moser Landon McCool the coach Glenn scratch Smith cowboys at Denver on Sunday. And when you look at this matchup, it's the return of javante Williams facing his former team, the Broncos. The first time the team that drafted him had the injury, they let him go. He's back has been awesome for the Cowboys to say the least. A little note the Cowboys have not beaten the Broncos, I think, coach, since 30 years. You were there 1995. And they haven't won in Denver since 92.
D
I'll tell you, it's, it is a, it really is. I hear a lot about, you know, different teams have a home field advantage. It is a tough place to play. It really is. And it, and it's so tough to play because I don't think people really, or people underestimate the effect of altitude on your lungs. I mean, it can take a big, big, big toll on you. And so, hey, I'm only hoping that, guess what, Rollies, especially defensive linemen rolling those guys in the game is really going to, I believe is good, could help the Cowboys here, their depth. And then I'm telling you, they'll be sucking on those oxygen masks on the sidelines because it really, I mean, I'm just telling you, just walking around there, if you're not used to that, it'll, it'll, it'll take the wind out of you.
B
And Jeff, I wanted to talk a little bit about whether this is a must win game for Dallas.
D
I.
B
It's not a must win game because you lose your one game below.500, you're in the exact same spot that you were going into the Washington game. It's a non conference game. So no, it's not a must win game. Having said that, if you were to win this game, I do think it changes some of the angles on the Cowboy season because now you've beaten a team who is right now in first place in the AFC west, right? You've put together a couple big wins and now you start looking at your schedule. You know, you get out of game against Arizona in week nine, you've got a bye week, you play the Raiders that are really struggling and all of a sudden you're looking at a, a schedule where you could potentially be. Was it 6, 3 and 1 going into that Philadelphia game and you look back at your schedule, you're one second away from beating Green Bay, you're one field goal away from beating Carolina. And maybe this is a team that should be going all in to win this year. Maybe their, their offense is good enough to carry this bad defense. And maybe in the NFC that's got a lot of depth, but there's no one team that looks absolutely dominant. Maybe this is a year that you can make a little bit of run. So this is not the best team that Dallas is going to play all year. They've got much more difficult opponents coming up. Philadelphia Detroit, Kansas City. But this feels like a turning point where if you get a win now we're starting to feel a little bit differently about this team.
C
Well, yeah, it's a tough place to win like coach said. Right. I mean there's a lot of things working against you, including the fact that the strength of your team is clearly obviously the offense and you're going against what is probably the best defense in football or certainly one of the best defenses in football. I, I, you know, I pulled some numbers here and they are number one in three and out percentages. They have the lowest touchdowns per drive so far this season, the third lowest plays per drive, the third lowest points per drive against them. They are just effective in shutting defense teams down. So and I think that it presented an interesting challenge to the Cowboys, right with Patrick Satan on the outside, you know how they're going to attack the Pickins Lamb combo. You know I, I think that advance Jo Joseph is a guy that is going to come after the quarterbacks and, and Dak is obviously usually very good against the blitz. So it, it just is a very interesting matchup in a place that's very difficult to put play. And, and you know, and your defense is playing a little bit better football but you're playing a team that has you know, basically not shown up for three quarters of, of the, of the games that they played against the NFC east only to score like 21 or in some cases 30 plus points in the fourth quarter to, to win those games. So it's just, it's a very tricky game against a non common opponent. And and these are the kind of games all you have to do is put it at 10am let's go. So I guess noon Central time, right. And it would be the, the classic Cowboys lose game, right. The, the non common opponent at away on the road in a tough environment in an early game. So the, the, these are the games that the Cowboys we talked about when they won the jets game. These are the kind of games that like usually where the Cowboys can get tripped up that it's right after right before an important game. The Cowboys really need to bear down even though this is a non conference game because you're in a spot that if you can play yourself into contention here if you win these last two games especially go into the buy like, like Marcus said now you've got opportunities to, to go out and make a trade, improve your defense even a little bit more. Suddenly you could be kind of in the middle of the top tier of the NFC in A year where everything just feels very wide open in this conference.
B
Imagine if this team is 531 going in their by week with a game against the Raiders coming up. Think about how differently we would feel about this team. And that's what's on the table here. I mean, I mean, the Cardinal game is not going to be a layup by any stretch, but if you were to win this game, I just think the Cowboys would have a lot of confidence in playing pretty well, you know, pretty good football over the last month, despite all of the injuries they've had. I mean, go through them. CD Lamp, Tyler Booker Cooper, BB Tyler Guyton, all the injuries on defense, Donovan Wilson, Trayvon Diggs to Ron Bland. And if you're able to come out over.500 after the first, you know, two months of the year, it's not too bad.
C
I was just gonna say real quick, coach, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I was just gonna say if you. It's about how you would win this game too. Because if you win this game, I mean a lot, we will have to assume, but maybe I could be wrong, that your offense was able to overcome this Denver defense on the road. And I think the level of confidence that you would have in that unit would just be. Have you rolling downhill because there's not.
B
Going to be any defenses that you play the rest of the year.
C
That's what I was just about to look up. Right like that. Like who would be the. The next toughest challenge after this game. I mean, playing this Denver defense in Denver, that's really, really difficult.
D
Well, I'm going to say this. I mean, if they do get to 5, 3 and 1, I mean, this is a. It's a place that will be. They'll go crazy around here. I mean, honest to goodness, they'll start. They'll start mapping off of, you know, they'll start mapping off where you want to take the super bowl parade. I mean, they'll. They'll try to figure out if they want to go down Commerce and across Maine. And I mean it. You know, Cowboys fans are so starved for some, you know, some momentum in the right direction. And I got news for you, they got it offensively. They have absolutely got it offensively. And you know, you do go five, three and one, you get yourself in position where over shown's back. I mean, people will be beating the doors down for a trade, anything. Oh, yeah, to get the defense to where they could feel like again they. They don't need but a few critical stops. But if they Get a player to in here that they could get that done with this place to go crazy.
A
So we've talked about not only how great the Cowboys offense is overall, but one of the ways to help the defense is keeping the opposing offense off the field. Right. And keeping your offense on the field. So I would think in this game you have it. I would think they're going to want to try to get Javante going right against his former team. They.
B
Oh, I mean, yeah, that's going to be the goal. Now, Denver's defense is pretty good at stopping the run, but I mean, I think Dallas is going to try to establish the run against any team. I'm sure Javante is going to want to get those touches. But can you run the ball when Denver knows that you're running the ball?
A
Yeah.
B
Like on these third and four two situations or say it's, it's second and five when running the ball, that's when it's going to be interesting to see how the Cowboys perform again. They could have their starting five offensive linemen back on the field for, I think would be, what, just a third time all season? We'll see how it works out.
C
Yeah, you're going to want Cooper BB against this interior trio of the Broncos, which is good. But, but I think if you have bb, you have what you need to kind of take advantage of that group and at least have some more effectiveness, you know, inside. Nothing against Hoffman, but, you know, as Marcus and I pointed out before, I think there's a 35 pound difference between these two at least. And, and so, and you want that extra, that exercise body in there to be able to move folks around with that really difficult dim for front.
A
So what, coach, what, what is the, what is the right train of thought? Do you fly. If you're the Cowboys, you fly out Friday night, get a custom, come to the air on Saturday, or you just go in Saturday night and just play Sunday?
D
Yeah, I don't, I don't think you change. You're not going to get. One day is not going to help you here. I mean, I think you go in, I don't think you change your schedule at all. I think you, I think you walk through Saturday, you get all your stuff done here, get yourself a haircut, get to the airplane by, you know, two o' clock or so, get in there, eat, meet and, and get ready to go play a football game. So you, you, you know, 24 hours, 48 hours. I mean, you, you, you gotta have time up there. You, you gotta dang near live up there in order to get in, in order to get used to that.
A
All right. Seems like they made more of it back in the day. Like, seems like it. They don't talk about it as much as they used to, which is good. Probably, you know, you don't want to focus.
B
It's probably Jeff, because like you, you look at the 90s, they didn't rotate as many defensive linemen. I mean, basically the guys that were on the field were just going to be on the field for an entire drive. Now teams are using a lot of different personnel on offense or rotating more on defense, rotating linebackers. I think they found ways to minimize how big of an impact it can have.
A
All right.
C
Yeah. And it really, you know, football is such an individual bite size. You play in snaps, right? So it's like you're not out there running full time. So it's easy to say, I'm out of wind, I need to be swapped out. So there's ways to mitigate it. But it's like with depth, it's not necessarily guys getting their bodies used to the altitude and playing the entire game.
A
All right, well, in addition to Week 8 Sunday, the NFL trade deadline is now less than two weeks away. So, so when we come back, we get, we got to bring it up. I mean it every day. There are new rumors out there. So we'll do that when we come back. Also, we'll get a little preview of what's coming up on the daily lockdown Cowboys podcast with Marcus and Landon. And we'll have our final thoughts here before week eight Sunday with the Cowboys and the Broncos. This is the Cowboys squad show. I want to talk to you about Mazda and their commitment because Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move from footwork to breathwork. We know athletes sweat all the details. Mazda brings the same intention to how they craft every model. And you can make everyday drives feel like anything. But from smooth handling to intuitive controls with all wheel drive standard in every crossover suv, you can drive with confidence through almost any season. So like our players, we sweat every details because when you make every move count, impossible becomes irrelevant. Mazda move and be moved. Okay, Cowboy squad show as we get ready for the Cowboys and the Broncos Week eight Sunday in the NFL. So, guys, the NFL trade deadline now less than two weeks away, the rumors are coming fast and furious. I mean, every day. And I think number one, because it's the Cowboys and number two, because the Cowboys have some draft picks. So that's. Everybody's trying to connect those Dots. So I mean there's Titans linebacker Cody Barton, Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson, who officially asked to be traded today out of Cincinnati, Roquan Smith out of Baltimore. Any of those seem like a good fit or is there anybody else that you guys are keeping your eye on?
B
Well, Jeff, I know for me a couple of those linebackers I think would make some sense and we can go over them if you want to, but we've heard now from Jerry Jones and Steven Jones that they are looking for a front line player. To me that means a defensive lineman. Right. And I think in the case of some of these linebackers, let's use Logan Wilson because he requested a trade. He's due I think 5 million this year and 6 million next year. You're already paying Kenneth Murray, I think 7 million this year. You signed Jack Sanborn, you drafted Chamar James who's starting to play more and now dear over shown's coming back. Like, I just, I just wonder if that's a little bit of overkill at one position. I think if they're going to make a trade, they would like it to be for a defensive lineman. Funny enough, there've been a couple guys that have been mentioned in trades. Quinn and Williams from the jets and Jeffrey Simmons from the Titans. Those are two defensive tackles that seem like they could be on the market, which is hilarious considering how many years Lane and I have been asking for the Cowboys to trade for a defensive tackle. They get one in Kenny Clark and now there's a million million of them available. I, I don't know if the Cowboys would pull off one of those moves, but it seems like that's at least the direction that they're looking at if they're going to make a trade.
C
Well, that's not even complete Marcus. They get one in Kenny Clark and they also have a guy named Solomon Thomas they signed who's playing pretty good for a third defense of tackle too, which is ridiculous. We better than we expected. I, I think at least. And yeah. And now on top of that they are seemingly willing to trade for a, I mean top end, very top end defensive tackle as well. So yeah, or at least the rumor is potentially. But you know, listen, if, if you need to do that, I think I, I, it makes some sense. I mean the class, the names that are being thrown around of available guys certainly looks better at defensive tackle than, than defensive end. But I, I, you know, I wouldn't be shocked if they went out and got a defensive end as well like Laden real quick.
B
Quinn and Williams and the Jets. Jerry Jones kind of let it spill in a radio appearance earlier this year that the jets are one of the teams they tried to trade Micah Parsons to because they were going after Quinn and Williams.
C
Yeah.
B
And the jets basically said no, but if he's available now, and I think it was Connor Hughes who reported that a second round pick is what it would take to get Quinn and Williams, maybe that is something they would explore. Now, I don't know how you get it worked out with his contract and also Diggy Zuba's contract now Kenny Clark's deal, but maybe it doesn't matter. You just bring in all three of those guys and you figure it out down the road.
C
Yeah, I mean, look, I. I said on Twitter today, I'll give you a first and a fourth. You give me both Williams brothers and Jeremiah Johnson. Let's. Let's. Let's call it. Let's fix the whole defense at once. Right? You know, so I tried.
D
I tried to do that with Houston and Marcus shot me down. I wanted, I wanted Anderson. I wanted Petrie. I wanted.
B
No, you wanted. Like you wanted, didn't you?
D
Yeah. I mean, hell, I just wanted to hit the trifecta, though.
B
He wanted to get Stroud and Willie Anderson for deck.
D
That's not your speak now. Now. See what I mean?
C
Every once. Okay, all right, all right. Tell us what the. Tell us what it is.
D
No, no, no. But every once in a while it's like, you know what I mean? He has just that brain fart. He can't. Can't help himself. He's already losing it staying inside so long.
A
He just.
C
I'm pretty sure that was a trade.
B
He asked me about.
D
Yeah, yeah. It's just automatic with the little rubber mallet and he thinks it's cute to kick.
C
Listen, hold on. He was golfing when you. When you proposed it.
B
Coaches understand some heavy anesthesia from his tooth appointment. That's when he made that trade offer.
D
Yeah, I still haven't heard. Now he's. He's pretending to be Digs. He's. He's. He's lying one time. Now he's telling another lie covered up with another one. What are you teaching those kids up there in Erie, for crying out loud?
C
What. What was, what was the offer, Coach? What was the offer for the Houston?
D
Oh, I just, I. I just said I'd pick up the phone, see what.
C
You can do, and I would.
D
Absolutely. I know they wouldn't. I know they wouldn't trade you the corner. Maybe they trade you the safety. Maybe they Trade you Anderson. I mean they're, they're out of it, for crying out loud. I think, I don't believe they can catch Indy, but hey, I'm just saying defensively what I saw out of that bunch, shoot, they are loaded on that side of the football.
C
So I'll tell you what. The, the, the, you know, I, I don't know if they're selling. I mean that's the problem is I think Houston still has like thoughts that they're you. I mean, I don't know if they're contenders, but they're, they're good teams. So I, I, I don't know if they would sell. I, I would hope they would, but I don't know. I think the name that's kind of interesting to me that I haven't really kind of explored a little bit and I kind of wanted to hear some of y' all thoughts is, you know, we've heard Minka Fitzpatrick being kind of thrown around there and, and I, I wonder, you know, let's say it's a second or third round pick and not a first round pick, right? Is this.
B
Oh, I don't even think it'd be that much.
C
I mean, so maybe I've lost track of his. Mika really fallen off that.
B
No, no, no, no. Minka is, I think Pro Football Focus is number two ranked safety this year.
A
Wow.
B
But you're talking about like a 28, 29 year old safeties. They just don't get traded for top 100 picks. Especially with this contract. He's got some guaranteed money over the next couple years. So I think you're looking at like a fourth or fifth round pick for Minka. So Miami can get out of the contract and get younger and if that's available to you when it sounds like it might be, I think that's appealing. If the Cowboys want to spend some more money in their secondary.
D
How about Grant Delpen?
B
Here's another one. I mean I, I think, I think Cleveland wants to hold on to him because I value the defense, but he's, he's another really good players. That's not a bad name to make mention.
C
I, I like Delpit a lot too, but I mean, again like I, it's weird, right? I, I don't, I don't disagree with you. It feels like the Browns and the Texans, right, they, they don't feel like they're going anywhere. I mean those are two different classes of teams because one has their quarterback and one doesn't, right. But I, I, I still, it's still weird to me that you've got these two teams that are kind of heavy on defense but are probably not going to want to break up that group because it's the best part of their teams.
A
Right. So let me ask you this. Give me, give me a percentage. What percentage do you guys think the Cowboys will make it? Some kind of a trade before the deadline?
B
I'll go like 90. It just might not be a big name.
C
Oh, definitely. That's exactly what I think, too. I, I think, I think a trade is definitely going to happen. Not definitely. As, as, as definitely as we, you know, these, these things do happen.
A
Okay.
C
The question is the, like, how impactful the trade is and how much is invested in the trade, and that might be based on, you know, how if they win this Sunday or not.
D
Yeah, I think, I think it depends on if they win Sunday too. I think if they win, I, I would say, I mean, I'd buy in at 90 if they don't win. I, I, I, I, I mean, I'd say it's a, I'd say it's a 50, 50 proposition. What I do think, though, is what was it, Marcus? It was mentioned in for Quinn and Williams. I mean, it feels like the price has dropped a little bit. So, you know, if, if Jerry can get in there and feel like he sees value, I, I could see him absolutely pulling the trigger.
C
And you could play all those guys like John oding and I were having a conversation about that earlier on Twitter. Like, if you got three defensive tackles, it would not be difficult, difficult to play those three all at the same time. If you needed to, you could play mint fronts, you could play some, a little bit of 3, 4. It's just alignment, like all those to.
D
A guy who, it doesn't look like he's got his guys coached up to play leverage. Hang on a minute there. I'm, I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna give you what we say out here in Texas when we're training these horses.
C
Whoa, I, I listen that very basic horse command. But I, I, like, I trust.
D
The.
C
One defensive coach that I do trust is White Cotton, though. Like, that's, that's why I, I, I'm okay with getting some, you know, some players added to the defensive line because the one coach who I do feel like, especially assistant coach that I do feel like on the defensive side that knows what he's doing is White cut. So we'll see. And he knows the player, right? He knows Quinn Williams, so that too.
A
Speaking of Houston Zion Childress back on the practice squad cut loose by the Texans this week. Does that move the needle for you guys at all? No.
C
I mean, it's great that he's back. I know we all follow these guys who kind of make their way on and off the practice squad, but when we're in the middle of the season, yeah, this guy's probably not even being activated at any point soon.
A
All right, before we go, final thoughts. You know, for me, I just, I want to see, I don't like the win a game, not look good, lose a game. I want to see back to back wins. I want to see an impressive road win. Final thoughts. And what do you got coming up on the daily Lockdown Cowboys podcast?
B
Yeah, we've got our game preview that'll be out on Friday morning. Make sure you guys check that out. We'll also have some post game shows. We've got the squad show for you guys. A lot of content over on the lot on Cowboys podcast. Make sure you check us out on YouTube as well. And as always, it's free and available on all platforms.
D
Forms.
A
Nice. Nicely done there, Marcus. Thank you. Sound like a host. Oh, wait, you are. Landon, final thoughts from you?
C
Yeah, just, you know, I think it's going to be an interesting game. You know, these two teams match up in a very odd way. You know, strength versus strength and weakness versus weakness in a way. And it's Denver's, like I said, a weird place to play and non common opponents. So it's just, it's hard to predict. I mean, I feel good about the Cowboys chances despite the fact that they seem to be playing a team with a much better record at that, you know, on the road. But you just, right now you're just not sure of what, you know, the level of consistency this team is going to give you week to week.
D
You know, we'll know, we'll know what we can do and see what we've got defensively because I guarantee you Sean Payton will have a game plan. I mean, mean, he will come after you. And we're looking at a game again where in a place where it's hard to get air, you better go score 35 if you're going to beat these guys.
A
All right. For Marcus, Landon and the coach, thank you for being with us for this edition of the squad show. We will be back with you after the game on Sunday. And of course, be sure and check out everything with Marcus and Landon again on the daily block on Cowboys Podcast and enjoy Week Sunday Cowboys and Broncos. This has been the Cowboys squad show.
