Dak Prescott is playing the best football of his career. Are the Cowboys wasting another year of his prime? We'll get to that and more next. You are Locked On Cowboys, your daily Dallas Cowboys podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast network. Your team every day. Welcome back to the Locked On Cowboys podcast, part of the Lockedon Podcast network. Your team every day. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day and today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and if your bet wins, you'll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Welcome back. I am your host, Marcus Moer. He is Lana McCool and on today's show we're discussing the players that need to be benched on defense and the ones that we would like to see replace them. We're also going to talk about the Cowboys run game here in a little bit, but let's start with this. I, we've seen the first month of the season and Dak Prescott is playing some unbelievable football right now, Leon. And, and I'm gonna make the case that I think this is the best complete game game that Dak has ever had. And it feels a little bit like he's entering the 2014 Tony Romo phase of his game where everything is just slowed down for him. Yeah, he knows where to go with the ball. Even bad offensive line injuries doesn't seem to matter. He's just locked in right now.
Lana McCool
Yeah, I think it's certainly that and I think it's certainly as well, you know, all the players, the collection of talent that's around him and the infrastructure that's around him on offense specifically, that feels like it's, it's greatly improved and he's thriving in it. Right. I, yeah, I think, I think you're right too when you include the context of what, what he was facing and who he had surrounding him and maybe more importantly who he didn't have in this game. This was, I, I think the best DAC performance that I can remember. He was consistently getting the ball out. He was, you know, on target. There were so many different plays. I think about that Turpin play on third down where it was an all out blitz and he just threw the ball to the spot where Turpin was going to end up and then he, Turpin just catches on the sideline completing it like, you know, just a perfect throw against zero blitz. And this was, you know, he was getting the ball out on target right before the rush could get him. He had the lowest time to throw of season. I think it was like 2.69, something like that. And he did that while posting the highest success rate and the highest EPA per drop back of the year for him as well. So I just think that, you know, and, and it, it, it, it really showed in, you know, in the output of Michael Parsons. Right. Like, and I think that that's why after watching the broadcast, it felt like Parsons didn't have such a great game. But if you go back and watch the tape, he was dominating at times. But the, but Dak was getting the so efficiently and getting completions that, that, that it basically neutralized the effect that Parsons was having overall on the effect of the offense.
Marcus Moer
I, I watched all 10 pressures of Micah Parsons on Sunday and that's the exact takeaway I had. It's if you had just a tiny bit lesser quarterback than Dak Prescott, Micah probably has three sacks and wrecks that game. But Dak is just. He's been in this situation so many times before. He knows how he can get rid of it. He knows where his hot routes are at. Just a masterful quarterback play. And again, he's had years where the weapons have been much better, the offensive line has been better, but I think the combination of. You were without three starters at one point. You're without CD Lamb, you've got Turpin in there as your number two receiver. You've got Jalen Tolbert making big plays against the defense that going into this game. Again, I want you just to remember this. Going into this game, everybody thought was the best defense in the NFL. And now coming out of it, I see, like the national take is, ah, this defense was overrated. It wasn't that good to begin with. It's, yeah, blah, blah, blah, blah. That's just how well Dax playing right now, like he carved them up.
Lana McCool
That's the Dak Prescott effect, right? Is that everybody's just talking about how bad this good thing was after they played Dak Prescott, not talking about how good Dak Prescott is. Right? Yeah, I, I. Absolutely. Well. And the, the benefit of having a run game, and we'll talk about that in the second segment. But. But I think really has just helped balance this offense in a way that it allows Dak to have all the tools at his disposal, and he was able to play in a neutral game script, you know, throughout the game. And I think that that's really the key, you know, is. Is adding that second passing a weapon which, which, you know, obviously we only have one now because CD Was down, but adding that second weapon and then adding the run game gave the offense a. A level of balance that didn't have to press Dak into playing out of his comfort level. He's playing within himself. He's really, really hard to stop when he's able to, when he has all the things available to him on the menu and he's playing really good. We. We cannot get out of this segment, though. However, even as good as Dak Prescott has been, without talking about giving credit to Brian Schottenheimer and especially Clayton Adams, I think those two guys devised up an incredible protection plan because he, you're right. Even though Parsons had a whole bunch of pressures and a kind of an inconsequential sack, they didn't have Very many pressures overall in the game. I think there was only like something like 16. And you go and watch the, the different ways that they were solving that problem, all the kind of different, you know, ways that they threw resources at it. They putting two tight ends on, on. On one of the defensive ends, on Gary on the other side so they could slide protection the other way. You know, a running back Chip, a wide receiver chip. They, they kept the protection game flat, fresh, so they weren't just doing the same thing over and over again. And I think it really kept what is a vaunted pass rush, not just Micah Parsons, on its toes. And they were not as effective as they should have been.
Marcus Moer
One big picture thing here because Dax playing so well right now, and I know the numbers might not necessarily bear that out because he's had some late game interceptions where the games were, you know, out of hand, but he played awesome in the Eagle game, he played awesome in the Giants game, and his best game of the season came against Green Bay. Does that cause you to maybe think the Cowboys should be a little bit more aggressive this year? Because you and I have believed for a while now that after the Micah Parsons trade, the plan is to keep all these picks, spend them on defense, keep your young core on offense, and that's how you build around Deck. But with Deck playing this well and now that he's healthy, I'm knocking on everything of what I have around me. Should the Cowboys be a little bit more aggressive, building a better roster around him?
Lana McCool
Yeah, you know, I mean, we obviously had this question answered after the Bears game, right? And we were like, it just doesn't feel like this team is. Is there. It's just not quite where, you know, it's not. Is it worth, you know, investing in this year? But you're right. Dak is just playing at such a high level. And it's not even just that. It's the, it's. The offense is just so effective, you know, and, and they are. There's so much synergy happening here that you, you just, you feel like, do you really want to waste this when you have an opportunity, you have some picks and stuff to, you know, maybe make a move? I think we still kind of have to play a little bit more. Wait and see. After last week, I was convinced that the answer is no, that you should keep your powder dry and just can continue on to next season. I think you got to see what happens with. We're in the middle of a Jets game that's playing right now just to Pull the curtain back. But you know, they don't look too great. And they haven't looked too great the first few weeks. There is a chance you could win that, that game. And then you play Carolina after that, there's a chance you could win that game and. And suddenly you're in a very different spot than you were after this Bears game. So I do think that is changed my mind that at least we should be considering it. At least more of a wait and see mode than a, a hard.
Marcus Moer
No, I'm, I'm with you. I think the only issue that I'm having is I don't see one player that comes in and fixes this unit. Like they've got so many issues on so many different sides. And even if you go out and get, let's say like the top name available and I'm making one up like Trey Hendrickson, I think that helps your defense, but does it solve all of your issues? No, probably not.
Lana McCool
Well, but it's not just one player though, right? Like it is the player that you would go get, but it's also the reinforcements that you're getting on defense and it's also getting an opportunity for guys like Diggs and Bland to be a week away from these injuries and week back on the field. So you're hoping. And then on top of that, every, I think every week we're seeing our younger players start to get incrementally better. So I do think that there is something that you can convince yourself if, if you go out and got a guy, a young player that you could trade for, that would still be a long term investment, not just a one year rental. I think it still makes sense to go out and make a trade if the, if the right player was available.
Marcus Moer
All right, let's talk about the Cowboys running game because that's honestly been probably the biggest surprise this year. We thought the run game would be better under Clayton Adams. I don't think anybody anticipated it being this good. We'll talk about that unit next Foreign this episode is brought to you by Mizzen and Main. You know the saying, look good, feel good. And let's talk about the Cowboys run game because they were phenomenal again this week. Javante Williams doing a lot of the heavy lifting. What did you see on the tape?
Lana McCool
First of all, I, I just, I think we need to take a second and just time to declare Javante Williams as a resounding free agent success. Right? Like, I mean, just ridiculous. Right now he's fifth in yards, tenths and yards per attempt, six in success rate amongst backs that have at least 15 carries. You know, his ability to stay moving after contact. He's just been very solid in the past game as a protector and as a receiver. It's just, it's, it's shocking like just how good he has been over the first four weeks. Just as an efficient runner of the football and more than that. Right.
Marcus Moer
And I got a quick number for you. If you look at running backs that had at least 45 carries, that's, you know, that's at least double digit every single week.
Lana McCool
Yeah.
Marcus Moer
Second in success rate, James Cook 65.3, Javonte Williams 65.1. Only one other running back is above 57% and he's got the second best yards per carry among all of those running backs. He's been unbelievable. Landon.
Lana McCool
It's shocking like, it really is because, you know, look, we've talked about it. Running back is just one of those positions that's really difficult to kind of evaluate in training camp. He didn't get a lot of time in preseason because, you know, they wanted to make sure he wasn't hurt. I mean, he looked good like he. But it's, it's just hard to know because there's, you know, so much about being tackled to the ground and that's very much tied to what he has been very good at. Right? Is just. He's bouncing, bounces off glancing hits, he stays up, he keeps his feet moving. And look, I, I think another thing that's been incredible about this is, you know, is, is the, the. The run game design. What Clayton Adams has brought to this team in conjunction with, with Connor Riley has, has really changed the kind of the culture of the team. And honestly, it's like, I think that the success of this run game is why you can go into a lot of these road games with a whole lot more confidence than you than you normally would have because you know, you can rely on your run game to kind of even things out. Even if the passing game is a little bit disjointed on the road, things are loud, things are a little bit more difficult. It just gives your offense and your team a little bit of confidence that you can be physical and have success while your offense is working it out. So, yeah, and Javante Williams has obviously been a huge part of that. We talked about the blocking schemes, but Miles Sanders, when he's gotten his opportunities, has also been a surprise. So, you know, those two things are not a coincidence. It's not just that you rolled, you know, a snake eyes twice. It's, it's. It's that you had a very good system that these players are, are playing in. And that goes credit to Clayton Adams.
Marcus Moer
I, I've got so many thoughts here, but I want to start with we heard all off season long from Brian Schottenheimer and Clayton Adams that they were going to be dedicated to running the ball. And it's different than what Mark Mike McCarthy said it because you could actually see them working on stuff. And it's not every run is coming out of shotgun and it's oh, well, here's our token run. So now we can throw the ball three straight plays like they are. They are dedicated to it. And we talked last night about some of our. The flaws of how often they were running early in the first quarter. I think they were a little too conservative. But just the way that they're running the ball where it's under center, it's downhill, everything is in timing. And you know, it's really beneficial when you have backup offensive linemen in there like the Cowboys do. Rather than asking those guys to, you know, pass block 55, 60 times now they can actually go downhill and get into a rhythm and kind of get the juices flowing a little bit. So I commend Schottenheimer and Clayton Adams for kind of sticking to their word and what they told us all summer.
Lana McCool
And listen, I, I think it's also tied to the, the passing game. I mean, obviously play action is, is part of that as well. But they were attacking the edge defenders in the run game early in this game and I think part of that was to get them worn down so that by the end of the game they didn't have as much of the teeth to attack them with the pass rush. And I think that, you know, in some ways works. We talked about the game that Micah Parsons had. Yes. But you didn't hear very much from Gary or, Or from Lucas Van Ness. Is that the other guy? Yeah. So I think, you know, that that is an indication of the fact that they were concerned with what was happening in the run game as well and that they were probably pretty beat up by guys like Steele and you know, look, Steele and Guyton are guys that are not going to be elite one on one pass rushers, pass rush defenders or blockers. But one thing that they can do is they can get their hands on folks and move them in the run game. So allowing them to beat up on defensive ends a little bit in the run game just kind of gives them an advantage when it comes pass protection. Protection time.
Marcus Moer
Yeah, we should mention, I mean, a little bit more on Javante. He's just, he's been awesome. Like, he's exactly what this team has needed the last couple years. And I was looking at Rico Dowdle stats actually on. On Monday, and I kind of feel bad for Rico Dowdle. I think he probably wanted to. To get a little bit more money and he probably was hoping Dallas would give it to him, but, like, this would have been a perfect scheme for him and now he's in Carolina in a scheme that doesn't fit. And Javante looks better, but it just, it's unbelievable how good Javante looks compared to what our expectations were this off season.
Lana McCool
Yeah, absolutely. And it's going to be interesting to see once they actually start to mix in Jaden Blue here a little bit. Can this, you know, can you add in a couple more. Maybe one more explosive run a game or something like that, and then suddenly you're. You're really talking about a dynamic run game and it could be. It could supercharge this offense to a new. To a new level.
Marcus Moer
Do you think we ever see Jaden Blue? I mean, I know Schottheimer keeps saying he's closer and closer.
Lana McCool
He's closer, he's close. Look, we're only four games in and he's, you know, he's. He's hinting at it so much that he's got to do it before Thanksgiving at this point. Right.
Marcus Moer
There's going to be a point in the season where they really need his explosiveness and juice, you know, just as a rotational guy, because I again, I love Javante. He's playing well, but I mean, he's getting 20 touches every single game like a debt base. He's just not going to last. So they've got to do a better job of managing some of those touches. And I would think that Blue is going to be the guy that can eventually do that.
Lana McCool
Yeah, Sanders has done a little bit of it, which has been exciting, and Javante Williams has gotten a couple of explosive runs as well. But you're right, I think you certainly don't want to continue on this pace for the rest of the regular season. You need to be able to mix things up a little bit. You need to have another reliable back that you can spell Williams. Otherwise things are going to get rough at the end of the season.
Marcus Moer
Season I me he's on pace for like 380 touches, which is absurd. Let's talk about the Cowboys defense because we have to. Who should be on the bench and who should be getting more playing time for this unit moving forward? We will get to that next. Find it locked on NFL on YouTube or wherever you listen to your podcast. All right Layna, let's talk about the Cowboys defense because at some point they need to start making some changes and they, they have made some over the last couple weeks. None of them have really worked. But what would you like to see for this defense to at least try to get back to a respectable level?
Lana McCool
I love that. You know, the only context that we're willing to talk about this defense in is in the context of who can we replace and how can we. How quickly can we do it. You know, look, I, I think that I, I think that we've seen a little bit of. Of what I, I would have done. I think, you know, Diggs seemingly kind of responded to not starting a little bit. I thought he played a little bit better this week than.
Marcus Moer
Coverage was. Much better. The. The. Yeah, but he did. I will give Dick. Yeah, he made a really big play on that screen pass in over time. He kind of blew up that play and it just. It sent Green Bay into a disarray. Now, the Cowboys still ended up time, but that was a huge play to get this game to be a tie.
Lana McCool
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think kind of one of those forgotten plays, it was the negative three or four yard where he just, you know, split two. Two blockers and got that. That screen. Blew up that screen for a huge loss. So, yeah, I mean, I, I think that, you know, right now Bland and Diggs are still kind of, you know, working their way back from their respective situations. And I think until, you know, we'll see Elam kind of be a third in that, you know, triplet of. Of kind of just rotating as the three outside guys and then as they start to get healthier, hopefully you start to see Elam kind of fall off a little bit because I, I do think that what we've seen from Ready Stewart in the slot has been pretty good so far. I mean, at least he can tackle and he's aggressive and he's playing the position the way you want it to be played. And, and considering the Cowboys are not going to be playing a ton of. Clearly they're not going to be playing a ton of man coverage, I think he can probably handle the, the aspects of. Of the nickelback situation that, that you. That you need him to. So.
Marcus Moer
I just can't believe we came in this season worrying so much about Nickelback and like, we're through four games and it hasn't even been something we've discussed because there's been so many other issues.
Lana McCool
Yeah. And. Well, I mean, look, it's not like there's a bunch of success to talk about on that side, so it's. It's not like it's been good, but it does feel like it hasn't specifically been the nickel situation that's been the problem. Right. It feels like it's been miscommunication between the, the boundary corners and, and the safety. So. And, and just bad play as well from those folks. So I, I do wonder, you know, I think, you know, with Wanye Thomas coming in and and obviously we don't know exactly what the timeline is for Hooker, but Hooker, by the way, just to kind of put that out there, injured his toe during the game. They think it might be a turf toe situation which you, which if you'll remember is a ligament problem. Right.
Marcus Moer
He said he re aggravated injury. He doesn't think he's going to have to have surgery, but it's something, it's.
Lana McCool
Like a pain management thing which it's incredibly painful. Just everyone who's had it has made it very clear that the turf toe situation is not fun to deal with. So you know there's going to be a little bit more youth being served. So that's just another position that you feel like you're gonna see some more you serve. You know, I, I obviously think that we should probably have a conversation about the defensive end rotation. You know, why don't you kind of lead us off with who you would start at defensive.
Marcus Moer
Can I tell you who I wouldn't start? Can we start there?
Lana McCool
Let's maybe, maybe that's where we need to start. Yes.
Marcus Moer
I think it's time to like really reduce Sam Williams's snaps and I know that they were reduced here in week four and I know he can get some pressure from time in and time out, but I feel like he's the guy that's most responsible for a lot of the busts in the run game among the defensive ends. And I think at this point like I would rather just give, give those snaps to James Houston and if you want somebody who's bigger, maybe just give those snaps to Jadevian Clown who I actually thought played pretty well in this game.
Lana McCool
Yeah, yeah, I thought so too.
Marcus Moer
I, I just, I, I think Sam Williams needs to see a big reduction in the steps.
Lana McCool
Yeah. You know, obviously you mentioned the, the James Houston who's the. Obviously the name that's going around here. I just, my thought with James Houston is I want to get him on the field more and I want to see him play more, but I just worry about playing a six 1,240 pound, not elite athlete.
Marcus Moer
Well, that's why I think, I think they need to. And again, Clowney was just coming in, but I, I think Clowney should start. I think you should probably have Nealon and Clowney as like your base ends and those are the guys that are eating up a lot of first and second down snaps. And then on third downs is when you rotate in guys like James Houston, Fowler and Azaraku. Listen, I thought Ezraku played better in week four. But I don't know if he should have double the amount of snaps as James Houston right now.
Lana McCool
Yeah, I mean that's, that's a kind of a weird double edged sword too because you need, Ezraku is getting better and you need him to continue to get better because that's part of your long term hope is that you need him to play better. So I think that they're gonna feel very conflicted about reducing his snaps and I do think that you do. He should be playing. Maybe he just needs to play some more early down snaps because he did do some nice stuff in the run game.
Marcus Moer
He's getting better. I'm, I'm fine with the Cowboys playing him. It's just, it's, there's pretty, there's pretty clearly one guy that shouldn't be out there as much as he and he's honestly responsible for a lot of the bus that's happening.
Lana McCool
What.
Marcus Moer
One more thing I wanted to ask you. If I were to tell you like, hey, I need you to pick the best linebacker on the team and they're going to play 55. It is unbelievable how mediocre from top to bottom this linebacker core is right now.
Lana McCool
I, I don't care how. If you're making me like to defend the world or whatever, like, you know, who, who's the cowboy linebacker I would pick, I would say Overshone. Drop that crutch and get over here right now because I don't even care if you're 10, you're coming and playing right now.
Marcus Moer
The problem is, is Kenneth Murray is responsible coverage bus. Jack Sanborn's athleticism is killing them in coverage. And honestly, one of the touchdowns I think was the touchdown that Jordan Love threw at the end of the game. Murray just didn't get deep enough. Murray gets deep enough, he probably tips that pass. I don't know. The linebackers are a mess and it's nowhere. Just feels like we're just waiting for DeMarvi and overshone to save the day.
Lana McCool
It's just like everybody's on this kind of crazy roller coaster of play, you know, and, and, and it just, you can't, can't get consistency week to week. You know, Damon Clark looked good early on, but then they, you know, then he didn't. So, you know, all these guys are playing inconsistent. No artificial flavors, colors or preservatives crafted for that perfect crunch. Tostitos tradition matters. Official chip and dip sponsor of the NFL.
