Dallas Cowboys face a must-win scenario in Week 15 as they prepare to take on the Minnesota Vikings and a relentless Brian Flores defense. Can Dak Prescott outmaneuver Flores’ infamous blitz packages, especially with injuries on the offensive line and uncertainty around tight end Jake Ferguson?

Welcome back to the Locked On Cowboys Podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast network. Your team every day. We'd like to thank you for making us the number one sports podcast network. I am your host, Marcus Mosher. I've covered the NFL for over 15 years. That is Landon McCool, the fantastic CO host of the Lockdown Cowboys podcast. And on today's show, we are previewing the Cowboys Week 15 matchup, talking about the Jordan Addison Justin Jefferson wide receiver duo. We're going to talk about Brian Flores's defense, but let's just start with this. Landon, how are you feeling about the Cowboys going into this matchup? They've had 10 days to get prepared. What's the vibe right now? I know that's a terrible podcast question, but I'm asking you anyways.
Landon McCool
You know, it's, it's, it's difficult to tell at this point. You know, I think you go on this streak where you beat Kansas City. I mean, you beat Philadelphia, then you beat Kansas City, you start to feel really confident about your team again. You go in and kind of lay a stinker against the Lions. And even though you ended up kind of trying to claw your way back and looking better as the game went on. You still don't feel great about the way your team played and, and this is a team in Minnesota that is kind of another one of these and I feel like there's been a couple of these matchups so far this season where it's almost like a mirror image of yourself. Right. Like they have this really good defense that's really difficult to stop. They do kind of some unique stuff and, and just it's, it's a difficult ask week to week to play them, which is a lot like the Cowboys offense. Right. But then they have that other side of the ball that's being led by old nine over there who, who you know is playing very much like a first year starter getting his, you know, first opportunities out in the NFL. It kind of mirrors what you're seeing with a very depleted and let's be just extremely kind and call an up and down Dallas defense. So I, I think it's going to be an interesting matchup and I think there's going to be one point when one, one team has the ball that it will be very interesting and you'll be watching really good level stuff and then there's gonna be the other side of the ball where it's gonna, you know, have the. Yeah, the horns blowing while they're playing.
Marcus Mosher
Is that, what is it? A movable object versus a stoppable force that's gonna be on the other side. Let's talk about the Cowboys offense against the Vikings defense because that's really the premier matchup. You've got Dak Prescott, who is one of the league's best quarterbacks at beating the blitz against Brian Flores, who is going to blitz Dak at an absurd rate in this game. It's going to be every single, you know, obvious passing situation that going to put guys right on the line of scrimmage. Usually I don't worry about Dak beating the blitz. Like he's been really good at it. I was a Wink Martindale with the Giants that would just try to spam blitzes against Dak with no success. But one of the reasons why I'm a little bit more hesitant is because you have a seventh round pick in Nate Thomas playing left tackle. Doesn't sound like Tyler Guyton's going to be ready. You've got a rookie right guard in Tyler Booker and one of the guys that beats a lot of the blitzes is Jake Ferguson who went from a limited injury on Wednesday to his calf downgraded to did not practice on Thursday. And now I'm wondering if he's going to be available in this game.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean look, it's, it's. I think if you look at numbers just generally and, and, and you're, you feel great about Dak against the team that has a high blitz rate because Dak has shredded the blitz and his EPA drop back is like almost twice was the non blitzing snaps. His success rate is, is several points higher. I mean, you know, I think, you know, from a 10,000 foot view it looks really good for Dak having to face a team that's, that's going to blitz them a lot. And, and I would but. Except yeah, when you get down to the details of who's playing in the game and, and all those aspects of becomes a little more money, it becomes a little bit more scary. And I think on top of that too, you know, I, I had a chance to talk with a, a beat writer for the, the, the Minnesota Vikings and they talked about how Brian Fres often has success against quarterbacks who usually have success against the blitz. Right. Like it's, it's almost like he's kind of the exception to the rule just because it's not even just the amount of blitzing he does and the types of blitzing, but he, they are also incredibly high in the number of simulated pressures that they bring. So it just, it's like a constant pressure. Look, but sometimes they're coming and sometimes they're not. So it's not even necessarily identifying the blitz and what's happening and then knowing your hot read to counter it. It's, it's also about knowing if they are actually coming or if you're being fooled that way. And then one last thing I'll bring in. Dak is usually so successful at attacking the blitz downfield and especially with Pickens and cd like that's always been a big thing that he's been able to do is, is not only beat the blitz, but make you pay for blitzing him and make you bleed for blitzing him. It's more difficult against the Flores system because they're going to play more of a shell coverage with man coverage underneath when they're blitzing, which makes all of that very difficult. Even when they don't do the man coverage aspect, they're still going to keep a shell coverage. So if the Cowboys are going to chunk these guys or they're going to make the pay and make the bleed, it's probably going to be more kind of in breaking stuff. They're going to need to attack the middle of the field. Going back to your very strong point that it would have been a lot better to have a Jake Ferguson in a game like this.
Marcus Mosher
And we talked about Jake Ferguson earlier this week. I don't think he's having a great year. However, it's nice to know that the tight end is going to see the same thing. Is that what that has how Dax sees it? And that's honestly one of the reasons why Ferguson has had a lot of success through his careers. He seems like he reads things the same way as the quarterback does. And whether that's going to be Luke Schoonmaker or Brevin Span Ford out there, I just don't trust those guys as much reading coverages and I think that could present some problems. The other issue is the way to beat the blitz is by throwing the ball quick over the middle of the field or down the field. And one of the things that we've seen under Brian Schottenheimer is they like to try to attack blitzes horizontally, which is like a lot of screens and.
Landon McCool
Tunnel screens, which is dangerous.
Marcus Mosher
Do that against this team with Andrew Van Ginkel, who is so, so good at reading those quick passes. So Dak is going to really have to stand in there and be confident and accurate and, you know, deliver the ball on timing and in rhythm.
Landon McCool
I honestly think that likely what they'll do if Ferguson doesn't play is they'll bring. They'll probably still do a lot 11 personnel but they'll use that tight end to block, right? It'll be sb it'll be bsf or it'll be, you know, scoony. And then they'll be in their pass blocking and I think the guy that's going to need to take the place and. And well, not nearly take the place because he's more of a target in the first place. I think CD Lamb is going to have to be the guy to do the operating in the middle of the field because that's kind of where he's going to be anyways. He can do those kind of in breaking routes. He can do a lot of that seam stuff. We've seen him do that as well. I think he could be a really useful tool as normal and attacking these blitzes and really making them pay.
Marcus Mosher
Two things, just from talking with Luke Braun on our show and actually off of our show as well. The way to beat this Brian Flores defense is is to run the ball and not get into like third and eight third N and they haven't Been very great, very good at stopping the run this year. And you can kind of nickel and dime this defense in a lot of ways. And I think that's, that's how you probably do it. And honestly, Brian Schottenheimer and Dak have been very good at putting together these long drives. You cannot get into third and eight, third N, third and 10, second and 10. Because that's where Minnesota is going to kill you.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, you know, anytime you're gonna lose if you consistently are getting into obvious passing down. So you gotta try to find a way to pass on first down, pass on second down, and then run the ball on third down. And if, if that gets disrupted, that's fine. But I think that's the kind of approach you're gonna need to get the more predictable looks that are hopefully not going to get you get your quarterback killed as much as the, you know, unbelievable blitz stuff that he will do when he knows that you're passing football.
Marcus Mosher
And honestly, it's going to be up to these receivers to make plays after the catch. I mean, we're talking a lot about Dak and the protection up front, but if it's George Pickens one on one with a corner like catch the ball, make a guy miss, because that's how you can rip off these big plays. They've gotten beaten by a couple of receivers. DK Metcalf, I think, had 130 yards in the first quarter against them in a game this year, just beating them after the catch. It's been a problem for them all year. So listen, you have two awesome receivers. They need to be the difference makers in this one.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And it's been, you know, you need both of them to play good football. It's been a while since you've had both of them play, have a really, really good game. You need to both have big games in order to win this game.
Marcus Mosher
All right, let's talk about the Cowboys defense against this young Minnesota offense that also has one of the best wide receiver duos in the league. How can the Cowboys slow down Justin Jefferson and and Jordan Addison? We'll get to that next. This episode is brought to you by Zocdoc. Guys, it's 2025. It's almost 2026. You look at the names, Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, TJ Hawkinson, Aaron Jones, Jordan Mason. Why isn't it a better offense, quarterback.
Landon McCool
The several of them that they've been through at this point. But look, I mean I think right now you scored, they scored 31 points against Washington last week, so they're probably feeling a little bit better about their situation. But it hasn't been good really, no matter who's been out there. I think that they've had, they, they had, you know, more success than I expected out of Carson Wentz even to be honest. But outside of that, like, you know, McCarthy has struggled and hasn't looked good and very much looks like a a full on rookie playing in his first year in the NFL, even though obviously this is his second year. So I, I think it's it they've been able to do some things in the run game. I think that there's been some injury stuff that's, that's hurt them a little bit, especially in the offensive line. There's this weird thing going on with Christian Derrisa that, I mean I don't know what Luke said to you about it, but the people I'm talking to kind of are absolutely confused as to what's going on with Christian Derrisa and, and his availability in games. Not even just week to week, but.
Marcus Mosher
In game he's got a knee and as of this recording he did not practice on Wednesday, did not practice on Thursday. Now he's missed a lot of practices this year and he's been able to play, but it seems like his availability is in question.
Landon McCool
But it's not even necessarily like him being able to play. Like he's usually on snap counts in game they've pulled him at the end of, at the end of games because he, you know, went too far on this assigned snap counts. So it's just like a weird thing. So they've just dealt with a lot of kind of weirdness on that side of the ball and then, you know, obviously there's going to be a bunch of weirdness when you have a young quarterback back who has an alter ego apparently. And, and so it's just, you know, I, I think it's been tough for them to kind of be consistently generating yardage and points despite having really two incredibly talented wide receivers. Because you can't get any consistency from the quarterback position, you can't get any consistency from your blockers. And even as, as good as as Kevin o' Connell is at drawing up and calling plays, it's just, it's just looked incredible. Incredibly clunky for them.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, and you mentioned the offensive line injuries. I think almost every one of their starters has missed multiple games this year. They are getting Donovan Jackson back, who they drafted in the first round from Ohio State. Brian o' Neal has been in and out of the lineup. Ryan Kelly has suffered multiple concussions. This year. They're all expected to be back, but it's. To me, it just feels like a very beat up offensive line that has not played together. And I would think this is a matchup with Jadavian Clowney expected to be back with Donovan as a raku and then the three defensive tackles, you should be able to get some pressure.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, look, I think there is clearly a huge mismatch on the outside with these wide receivers and whatever cornerbacks that are going to be facing them. I do think that there is almost an equal level of mismatch inside with the Cowboys defensive tackles and this defensive interior with the way that they're beat up and yeah, honestly, just up and down the line, the Cowboys don't have a great overall defensive line. I'd say I think they've played some good football over these last few weeks, but I do think that they are talented enough that they could go out there and, and, and really, you know, slow down the, the Vikings running attack to the point where they're going to have a hard time kind of operating because they're going to have to turn to McCarthy to throw the football. And I honestly think that they'll be able to get pressure on, on McCarthy as well because he's throwing the ball very late into the snaps. His time to throw is incredibly high.
Marcus Mosher
And you know that Kevin o' Connell is going to do some things to get him in rhythm, you know, some play action, some easy throws. I also think they're going to limit the number of throws that he has, at least early in the game until he gets into a rhythm, which means the Cowboys are gonna have to stop the run and they did not. That's not true. They actually did a pretty good job of stopping the run against Detroit. David Montgomery had a big run after contact and then Jameer Gibbs had a run late. But for the most part they did a pretty good job. You just can't let Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones get five, six yards of carry and get McCarthy into these very favorable situations because that's where Kevin OConnell can kill you.
Landon McCool
Yeah, if they, I mean, first line one in this game for the Cowboys has got to be stop the run because that's going to be their number one game plan for not only not exposing McCarthy, but trying to limit the. Their own defense's exposure on the Dallas Cowboys offense. Right. So they are going to try to dominate this game through the run game and try to dominate the clock in possession. So line one has got to be finding a way to stop the run because it's definitely the more dangerous of the side two sides of the ball for the, for this particular matchup because McCarthy hasn't necessarily been great throwing the football. And, and I think the only way that he kind of unlocks the ability to get these wide receivers open the way they need to is through play action. And, and so it's got. And they're going to want to unlock it with the run game because no one's going to buy the play action early with these guys if, if they aren't running the football.
Marcus Mosher
Let's talk about those receivers. How do the Cowboys try to slow down Justin Jefferson? Jordan Addison? We. We have a little bit of an updated corner. Trayvon Diggs was practicing. Still don't know if he's going to be available for this game. Savon Revel has been dealing with some knee soreness. He's been limited in practice the last couple days, so I think his status is up in the air. How do you. I mean, I know they're not going to be able to stop them completely unless McCarthy's just flat out bad. But how do you slow them down?
Landon McCool
I. I mean, it's got to be pressure. It's got to start up front. You know, like, I think you just got to get after McCarthy and, and rattle them and. Because I think, you know, you, you know, the idea of being able to consistently beat these two wide receivers, especially Jefferson, and be able to shut them down, I think is, Is a foolhardy.
Marcus Mosher
You know, other teams have been able to do it, and honestly, it's been because the quarterback has been bad. But just something tells me that on Sunday Night Football, Justin Jefferson's gonna have a big game.
Landon McCool
You know, it's, it's. The Cowboys are a great salve to all bad, deep offenses.
Marcus Mosher
They're a great elixir, right?
Landon McCool
Yeah, exactly. So, yeah, I don't know. I think it's, it's gonna be tough for them to, to, you know, consistently slow these guys down late into the snap. The Cowboys have to find a way to get McCarthy rattled, which, you know, isn't hard. I don't think it's hard, no, but they just have to do it and they got to do it consistently and stay out of easy conversion situations. Force him to get into third down and longs and, and drop back to throw the football.
Marcus Mosher
And honestly, they did a good job against the Lions and getting them into like, you know, third and 14, third and 15. But Jared Goff was just too accurate and that happens. Like, Jared Goff gets into these games where he's just pinpoint accurate. It kind of doesn't matter what you do. I don't expect the same for J.J. mcCarthy. So if you can get him backed up. And again, talking to Luke, go check out the crossover episode. He did a great job of previewing this Vikings team. They make a lot of mental mistakes. He pointed out that there was a game this year where they had eight false starts. Like they're going to put themselves into disadvantageous situations. You've got to capitalize when that happens. When it's, you know, when it's second and 12, don't give up nine yards and get them into a favorable situation. You've got to take advantage.
Landon McCool
Yeah. I mean, this is, this is an interesting test for the Cowboys defense because, you know, last week they played a very good offense. You know that, that had all their skill players in a way that we didn't expect. This week they're playing a lesser than offense. They need to find a way to if they're going to make their progression to being a good defense someday. I think this is the point where you need to be able to start handling these lower level offenses because otherwise if you're not. If these guys run ramp shot over the over the Cowboys defense, then where have we really progressed to at this point?
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. All right, let's give our predictions for this Week 15 matchup on Sunday Night Football. Can the Cowboys get a win and keep their playoff hopes alive? We'll get to that next. Welcome back to the Lockdown Cowboys Podcast. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day. All right, Landon, the time has come. Prediction time. Who do you have winning this game?
Landon McCool
I mean, I think I'm picking the Cowboys. Like, you know, it's, it's a, it's a, it's a weird team, right? Like it's, it's a weird matchup with the defense that they play and the amount of, of looks, different looks and blitzing and I'm sure it's, it's difficult to prepare for. I am like heavily relying on the, on my belief that Dak is a extreme veteran quarterback and one of the best at beating the blitz. And even though I do believe what I said earlier that I think Flores can kind of be the exception for a lot of those quarterbacks. I just think the Dak has good answers and there's a lot of weapons on this offense and other teams that have had less than the Cowboys have had success at different points beating the blitz. So I'm just going to trust at home that the Cowboys can handle this and I think the defense will probably do just enough right, like getting off the field A couple different times. I don't know that. I do think that Jefferson will probably have a big game or at least, you know, maybe, maybe he ends up with like a hundred yards in the first half, but they still have only scored one touchdown or something like that. I wouldn't be shocked, but I'm gonna pick the Cowboys to win, let's say 28, 21.
Marcus Mosher
Do you know the last time that Justin Jefferson has had a 100 yard game was on October 5th? And actually he's, he hasn't even gotten to 20 yards in the last two weeks combined.
Landon McCool
Yeah, but who's he playing this week? Who's he playing this week? Marcus.
Marcus Mosher
That's what I said. The Cowboys are a great elixir. I don't know who their cornerbacks are. It. He's been, it's not his fault. The offense has been really bad. But there is something that just tells me that Kevin o' Connell is going to create some shot plays down the field, and I wouldn't be surprised if he takes advantage. I, I keep thinking about, like, what is the magic number that the Cowboys need to get to on offense in order to win this game? Is it, is it 28? Do you think, does, does Minnesota score 28 points in this one? I don't know, But I think 28 points against a Brian Flores defense can be difficult to do, but to me, it's all game script. And I know we talk about this every week, but even more so against Brian Flores, you do not want to get down seven points, 10 points, because then it's just going to be relentless. And we've seen this time and time again you get behind in these games and it's really hard to come back. The Cowboys have been awful at starting the games over the last month. That can't happen. They've had 10 days to get ready for this game. They're at home. The crowd's going to be fired up if they don't come out fast in this game. And it's another one of these ones where, you know, it's, you know, 10 to 3 going into the final two minutes of the first quarter. I'm going to be really discouraged about any potential playoff run they could make over the next month.
Landon McCool
You know, I don't think this is a hard team for the Cowboys to beat unless they allow that kind of game script. Right? Then suddenly, if you get behind where you're throwing the football now, you've kind of upgraded your, your opponent because you've put them into an advantageous situation. Where they can attack you the way they want to on defense and then they can play on offense exactly how they want to. Right. They could run the football. They don't have to throw the football if they want. If they don't want, want to. So the Cowboys cannot handle this the way that they have handled these last few games and start with slow. We, we've harped on this all week. They cannot have that kind of normal first quarter. They've got to find a way to score points.
Marcus Mosher
You know, it's weird that, that probably the best team left on their schedule is the Chargers, who they play next week. Right. The Chargers have a better quarterback. I think they have, you know, one of the best coaches in the league and Jim Harbaugh. But I actually think this matchup is going to be the hardest for them because for the most part the Chargers are just going to play you straight up. You know, they, they don't do anything to confuse you. Right. This Vikings team can be, I think they're incredibly well coached. They've got a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. It's a huge game for the Cowboys at home. I think it's going to be really close. I'll pick, I'm going to pick the Vikings just because that's what I always pick. But I, I, I, it's a, I think it's a six and a half point spread right now on FanDuel. I would stay away from that. That just seems like way too many points.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And honestly, I think I, I wouldn't be shocked if this was a 1414 game going into the fourth quarter. 100, you know, like, and then suddenly the Cowboys, you know, score two touchdowns and, and, and they score a garbage touchdown at the end. I just think it's going to be that kind of game.
