He is Lana McCool and on today's show we are previewing The Cowboys Week 11 matchup on Monday Night Football against the Las Vegas Raiders. We'll talk about the offense and if they can get back to an elite level. We'll make some predictions at the end of the show. But Lane, let's start with the Cowboys defense because I think, I think for the first time all year we're excited to see this unit because of some new players including Quinn and Williams, Logan, Wilson, DeMarvi and overshone Savon Revelle. Potentially four new big time players added to this unit.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean it's, it's potentially going to be, have a completely new look to it. Not just maybe because of personnel, but also because you've added a third defensive tackle into the mix. You wonder if we aren't going to see a little bit more five man front, three defensive tackle. Look, you can call it three, four, you can call it five, two. It doesn't really matter. I just think we'll start to see some more of those types of looks like we saw a little bit of an up, uptick of it last week. Even without. Not last week, the week before that, even without Quinn and Williams. Now that we have Williams as well, I do expect that you're going to see a little bit more of it. So it could be not just different in personnel but also in scheme.
Marcus Mosher
And this is a matchup and we'll, we'll talk about some individual matchups in a little bit. That favors Dallas. Right.
Home Chef Advertiser
Again.
Marcus Mosher
Now that hasn't mattered all season long. Right. But you're going up against an offensive line that's going to be down multiple starters. It was already one of the worst offensive lines in the league. Their best player, Colt Miller, their left tackles out. It's not a particularly dynamic offense. It doesn't have a lot of shifts in motion. You should be able to just go out there, play your game and have some success. And I understand that it's going to take them a while to kind of get up to speed, but if it doesn't happen this week with the Eagles, Chiefs and Lions all on deck, I don't think it ever will.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean this is one of the few games this season where you feel like because of the additions the Cowboys made last week, because of the, the, the subtractions the, the Raiders have faced, this is one of the, the games where you, the probably the only game where you feel like the Cowboys defensive line comes into the game with a really big advantage. I mean, let's talk about this Raiders offensive line for a second. They have the second worst yards per carry as a team and they have by far the worst in the NFL. Yards before contact. I think it's like 5.6 and the second place team is 7.1 or not 5.6. That's not right. But it's, it's, it's really, really bad. Basically. It's, it's like, you know, orders of magnitude to the second place team and, and you know, it's really kind of taken A guy like Ashton Genty who's obviously an incredibly talented running back and really taken away all the juice because he doesn't get an opportunity to get going. And I think you could say the same thing about a guy like Geno Smith who they traded a third round pick they were excited about after what you, you saw him do in Seattle. And I think that's. It's just really taken a lot of the wind out of the sails for what was supposed to be a really exciting offense with Chip Kelly and all these additions. Now it's just, it's. It's limpid and, and unable to do anything. It's bottom of the. The league in most categories, to be honest. Yeah.
Marcus Mosher
And I want to go back to the offensive line. I love my Raiders fans. I, I've. I've covered them for a long time. So what I'm about to say about their offensive line, I promise I'm not exaggerating. They don't have an offensive lineman on their team right now who would be active on game days for Dallas. That's how bad their offensive line situation is. And there are ways that you can mitigate a bad offensive line. We saw the Cowboys do it against Green Bay early in the season when they scored 40 points. That hasn't been this unit this year. Like they've, they've really struggled. So I would expect Quinn and Williams and also Digizua to have strong games. I would think someone like Donovan Ezraku should have a strong game. We should mention Geno Smith in his last game against Denver. He hurt his quad. We don't really know the status. I mean he's going to play. We don't know how healthy Gino Smith is. This is a game where the Cowboys have to win.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And again, they certainly have some talent on the side. We already mentioned Ashton Jensen. Gino Smith, you know, when healthy especially is it can be a very good quarterback. He's just had a lot of struggles because of this offensive line. Brock Bowers, as we brought up before is probably the most dangerous tight end with the football in his hand in the league. But you know, because they have been unable to block anybody, it's just completely neutered what this offense has been able to do. And yes, I agree, like this has been a per. This is really a perfect opportunity for a Cowboys defensive line that's trying to recon construct itself behind Quinn and Williams to kind of get out with the right first foot, a first step with, with Williams against a lesser opponent that you really feel like you you should for, for the first time in a long time go out and have a pretty strong advantage over.
Marcus Mosher
Now. I want to talk about Trey Tucker, who is right now their de facto number one receiver. He's a tiny guy, five nine, like 185 pounds. He can absolutely fly. And honestly that makes me a little nervous because it's those guys that have the speed with the cowboy safeties. We should have mentioned Malik Hooker and Donovan Wilson.
Landon McCool
Yes.
Marcus Mosher
Are expected to play now that should, that's not like Ed Reed and Troy Paul Mahler, but it's so much better than what they've had. But in a first game back, you know, with both those guys coming back from injuries, you do wonder could they be exposed over the top a little bit?
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean it's not like we had a lot of great success when they were out there originally, but you're right, it certainly stops the bleeding and it's better than what you've had, especially considering the one year Thomas was kind of limping into the whole situation and it felt like even your backup safeties were a little bit banged up as well. So yeah, to have these guys back, I think hopefully it provides at least some kind of stability. It's going to be interesting to see especially with all the new cornerbacks being rotated into the, the, the, the mix, including Kaylin Carson and then obviously Ravel as well, how that's going to play out with, with this, with this kind of smaller group. Tyler Lockett's also in this receiving group. So another guy that can a little bit smaller, quicker, that can get down the field as well. And then on the other side they've got a huge behemoth like six 5,215 pound x receiver as well who you know, Thorton hasn't necessarily done a ton yet, but I think it's, it's game. Yeah, this might be the game. Right. It's been, it's been a breakout opportunity for every other offense offensive player this year. So the Cowboys need to just be kind of careful of, of the different mix and match of. Of skill sets they have out there.
Marcus Mosher
How much does Ashton Genti scare. Scare you in this game? Because he's not had a big season but this feels like on Monday Night Football at home. Is this the kind of the, the breakout party?
Landon McCool
It certainly could be but I, I also think again it's, it all starts up front and, and his, you know, the reason that you've seen him kind of struggle this year so far as far as, or at least not blow up the whole league like, you know, kind of like many of us expected is because he's getting hit in the backfield a lot. He's getting, you know, hit before getting too many yards because he's not getting anything from the offensive line. You know, you bring in Chip Kelly, you bring in Ashton Jensen, there's a certain standard that you expected for, you know, off for offensive line blocking, for run bl for the ability to run the football. They just haven't been able to achieve that because of the players that they are lining up at the offensive line position. So I do think that you're going to see him do some amazing things trying to avoid a 2 yard loss to make it back to the line of scrimmage. And then I certainly think he's going to break a player or two because yeah, it's still the Dallas defense but you know, at the same time we're getting demarvi and over shown back, we're getting, you know, Logan Wilson back. So maybe, so maybe some of that second level Logan Wilson back. We're getting Logan Wilson in. So maybe some of the second level stuff that we've seen that's been problematic will get, you know, hopefully fixed a little bit with those guys.
Marcus Mosher
And if you go back to like our scouting report on Ashton Genty when he was an option for the Cowboys, it's. He's one of the best tackle breakers that we've seen. So you've got to rally to the football. Like I don't think, I hope that the Raiders aren't opening up massive holes where he can just get downhill quickly. I think he's gonna have to do a lot of the work by himself. The way to mitigate that is to rally to the football, try to tackle low, don't try to tackle him high. And that's to me, honestly that's more of an effort thing than a talent thing like you gotta want to go tackle, you got to put yourself, your body on the line. If the Cowboys can slow him down, get to some of these, you know, second and nines, third and tens where you can blitz and you can get your pass rushers on the field, I think they'll be okay.
Landon McCool
And that's one specific area where I am actually grateful to have a guy like Donovan Wilson back.
Marcus Mosher
Right.
Landon McCool
Because he can come down from the third level as that last wave to finish Genti off, you know, in, in the gang tackle situation. And it's nice to have that extra oomph coming down from, from your safeties when you're facing a guy that's really good at breaking tackles and slipping loose of your arm tackles.
Marcus Mosher
All right, let's talk about the Cowboys offense because it's been a while since we've seen this unit play at an elite level. Will they get back there in week 11? We'll get to that.
Landon McCool
Next Foreign.

Welcome back to the Loton Cowboys Podcast. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day. We'd also like to thank you for making us the number one sports podcast network L let's talk about the Cowboys offense because the game against the Broncos was rough. Honestly, their performance against the Cardinals was probably worse. They've had two weeks to get ready for this game. Do you expect the offense to get back to that level that we saw in the first two months of the season?
Landon McCool
Yeah, I hope so. I mean, look, this is not this, the Raiders defense is better than the Raiders offense, but that's not saying a ton. You know, they're kind of statistically average in most categories, I would say. And, and this is an opportunity with a week off to kind of get some of the, I think for the cow, for the Cowboys specifically, getting healthier up front in those, you know, middle three guys. And CD Lamb kind of being another week away from his ankle injury. I think that's really going to help this, this offense a lot. I think getting those guys kind of an opportunity to take a breath, get healthier, watch some film, kind of sync up a little bit and, and, and just get back to running the football like they were earlier in the season. I think it's going to help the passing game again. What we mean is that when this team is able to stay balanced, they're a very, very good football team. They move the ball extremely well. They're extremely tough to beat. They can, they can beat you in a whole bunch of different ways. They struggled when put into situations where they're forced to throw the football, where teams know they're throwing the football. I think obviously it starts with pass protection, so hopefully they clean up a little bit of the pass protection side. They get a little bit healthier up front and that wide receiver and, and they kind of get back to the, the kind of efficient running the football that we saw especially early in the season.
Marcus Mosher
It's. Their defense is really funny because they, they have these three linebackers that all have such. Strike. I'll get into it. So they're playing Jamal Adams as a weak side linebacker now. Okay. And Jamal Adams does all your typical Jamal Adams things. Right? There's Devin White, who I. He's Devin White. Right. So he's an incredible athlete that doesn't know what he's doing. The other linebacker is a Landon Roberts, Who's I think 30 now. He's a downhill thumper that can be exposed in coverage. And then their slot corner is Jeremy Chin, who we remember from the commanders, who is a 6 foot 4, 220 pound safety. Really, it's just a really weird defense and they want to be attacking, they want to come downhill. And if you can protect, you're going to have guys running open all day long over the middle of the field.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And. And he basically splits that nickelback position with Darnay Holmes, who's a very undersized nickelback. So I would imagine it's probably going to be a lot of Chin trying to go up against CD Lamb, which man. Good Luck with that. I mean he's, Jen's a very good athlete, but I don't know that that's the kind of job that he's up for. So you know, ultimately it becomes about like making sure that you have a plan for a guy like Max Crosby because he, he can obviously wreck your game. But if you can block it up, I think you're right. Like they don't have a ton of great cover guys necessarily. They have a couple of really good athletes and they do some interesting things in the back end. But I, I think the Cowboys, you know, with the talent they've got, especially at wide receiver, they should be able to find open guys pretty consistently, especially if they're able to mix in some play action there and, and have, you know, threat of the run game, you know, making the linebackers move that direction.
Marcus Mosher
I, I was just gonna say it's a very Pete Carroll defense in every sense of the word because there are two safeties. Jeremy Chin and Polamao are both 6 foot 4. Their outside corner, Darian Porter is 6 foot 4, 200 pounds. So they're long and they're all freak athletes. Right. Even Eric Stokes on the other side is an unbelievable athlete. So you're not gonna out athlete them. Cowboys just have more talented and refined players. Like I don't know if this is going to be a big Pickens game, but maybe it should be. Maybe you take shots down the field. The other thing I was going to ask you is we heard Brian Schottenheimer late in the week say that there's an open competition at right tackle now between Terence Steele and Nate Thomas. And I'm glad to hear that. It also makes me a little scared this week against Max Crosby.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean I think look, either way and honestly, no matter who the right tackle is, you need to have a play plan for Max Crosby that doesn't necessarily include a bunch of one on one blocking with the right tackle. So I, I, I. One of the things that we talked about like offensive improvements that we'd like to see this team do a little bit more is playing more to tight end sets and getting an opportunity for Revan span for to be out on the field maybe Brevin Span. Ford needs to be a little bit of the part of the solution here with Crosby. Get him some opportunities to go out there and help whoever it is. But yeah, look, we're gonna, we need to see what we've gotten Nate Thomas, right? I think it's gonna, you're gonn here I, I think that you're gonna, at times you're gonna really miss what you get in Terrence Steele's run blocking when, when he's not out there. But you also got to get Nate Thomas up to the point where he's going to be able to take over that job. Because I just think that Steel's pass protection stuff's never going to get better than where it is. And I think you've got something in Nate Thomas. If you can develop it a little bit. I think there's, you're going to cross that Rubicon at some point this season, or at least in the off season where maybe Thomas is the better of the two right tackles for the walk turn.
Marcus Mosher
And Crosby is such a unique player because he's not somebody that you can just throw a double team at and take him away because he's so good at like slanting inside and getting skinny and getting through these gaps. And a lot of times if you watch him, he does it like he's starting to switch gaps right as the snap is going on. And by the time the tackle gets out of their stance, he's already between him and the guard. So he's, he's a monster to deal with and he's going to make a couple big plays. But what you can't have happen is let the other guys dominate. You can't have Tyler Guyton struggle against Malcolm Koontz and Tyree Wilson. You need your interior offensive line, Tyler Smith, Cooper Bibi and Tyler Booker all to have good games because those guys are going to see a lot of one on one opportunities play like the first round picks that they are.
Landon McCool
And, and again, I, I also think that you've got to take it to Max Crosby and he's a tough guy and he obviously is going to take it, but it's better than having to sit back and, you know, be on the defensive. And that means pass protection for these tackles, right? So being able to remain balanced and, and go come off the ball and hit Crosby, that's going to be. And have him, you know, play, have to play both the run in the pass every snap. You can't just have him being able to pin his ear back and come back for deck full time, have him have to think about the balance and, and that means, you know, not getting into third and long situations, attacking down the field a little bit more on first and second down. Don't get into third downs, right? Like take the opportunities early to get the chunk plays and then run the ball on third down to convert so that's how you kind of limit guys like Max Crosby, who at any given snap could just destroy your whole play.
Marcus Mosher
This game to me is more about game script than anything else.
Tyler Rowland
Right.
Marcus Mosher
If the Cowboys get a lead in this game and now you can utilize play action, you can run the ball, that's where the Raiders have a really hard time. But if the Cowboys get like they did against Arizona where you're down by a touchdown and 10 points and now you're having to throw the ball and Pete Carroll can send some of these exotic blitzes and Max Crosby's getting one on one opportunities, that's where you're going to struggle. It's really important after the two weeks the Cowboys have had off, and I know it's been a really rough two weeks for them, but it's important that they get off to a quick start because you don't want to let the Raiders hang around. You know, in this game when it's in Las Vegas and that crowd can be really loud.
Landon McCool
Yeah, you want to be able to control the game from the beginning, get out early, get control the game script because again, you know, in any situation you're, you're going to struggle with this team in a negative game script for the length of the game, but especially on, on the road in a tough environment, you want to control that or early. Get, get control of the game script, get control of the game flow, run the, run the ball, remain balanced and I think you'll be able to beat these linebackers consistently with play action to the point where you'll be able to convert first downs and score points.
Marcus Mosher
Last thing, Jake Ferguson's been downright bad the last two weeks. Got shut out in Denver. Had multiple drops, he had a fumble, he had a holding call against the Cardinals. It's Jamal Adams and it's Devin White as the two linebackers. He's got to have a good game if the Cowboys want to get back to being an elite offense.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I agreed and, and I think this is a good week for him too with these linebackers. So I think look for him to be a heavy component because they're going to have a lot of focus on these wide receivers. He's going to have a lot of opportunities.
Marcus Mosher
All right, let's make some predictions. Week 11 Monday Night Football between the Cowboys and the Raiders. We will get to that next. This episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Welcome back to the Locked on Cowboys podcast. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day. For your second listen, check out the Locked on NFL podcast. Two shows every single day. One in the morning with Tyler Roland, one in the afternoon with Tony Wiggins. Available wherever you get your podcast. All right, Landon, Cowboys desperately need to win here in week 11 just to stay relevant. Do they get it?
Landon McCool
Yeah, I, I kind of think that they do. I mean I, I think that the mismatch that we talked about, the rare mismatch that the Cowboys have this week on the defensive line, you get acquainted Williams, who I'm pretty sure this is right, like had two, like basically two and a half weeks off.
Marcus Mosher
It'll be 23 days since his last game.
Landon McCool
So you know, just an opportunity to kind of get a fully healthy, refreshed Quinn and Williams mixed in with the group that's also coming off by as well. I I just think that that's gonna. There's gonna be a lot of opportunity for big play with a. With a compromised quarterback in the. In this pocket, a young rookie running back who's going to be trying extremely hard to kind of overcome what's happening up front of him, and then a defense that is good, but not great. I mean, like I said, kind of statistically down the road, an offense that's had a week off that is looking to kind of get its groove back a little bit, it's getting a little bit healthier. I understand the games on the road, but I do think that this is probably one of the few games where I'm going to feel confidence about the Cowboys winning the rest going the rest of the way. I. I don't feel great confidence, but I do think the game. Cowboys win this game, let's say, 27, 21, with like, a late score, but Cowboys kind of controlling the flow of the game, most of it.
Marcus Mosher
On paper. The Cowboys do have a lot more talent. They've got the better quarterback, they've got the better offensive line, and more often than not, if you've got those two things, you're going to win a lot of football games. There's just. There's part of me that just doesn't know what the energy and the vibe is going to be like for Dallas, and that's one of the things that you can't really factor in when you're just looking at, you know, the rosters. On paper there. There's a chance the Cowboys come out and they. They're flying around and, you know, they're excited to be back on the football field, and it's a relief that they can play again. There's also a chance that they come out really flat, and that's would be totally understandable as well. So I don't have a great feel for this one. I think, honestly, if I had to pick, and I guess I do because we're doing it right now, you're making me pick.
Landon McCool
You better pick, too, buddy.
Marcus Mosher
I think it's going to be a really ugly, sloppy game that kind of gets decided in the last six minutes, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's like a 24, 22 type of game.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I didn't hear a team that you picked there.
Marcus Mosher
I'll pick the Cowboys, but I. I don't feel great. If this was a. Nor I think if this was a normal situation, I would pick the Cowboys to, like, win by a touchdown. This is not a normal situation.
Landon McCool
I gotta say, like, to me, this is the most kind of unknown it feels about the Cowboys since at least the first week of the season.
Marcus Mosher
Right.
Landon McCool
Where we, where we really feel like.
Marcus Mosher
A whole new team. Right.
Landon McCool
It really does. Because, I mean, they get the bye week. You've had some people kind of come in and out. Everyone's kind of getting. Everyone has kind of gotten healthy on the, on the offense, but they just feel a little disjointed since that's happened. Now they've had some opportunity to regroup and on defense, like, there's an opportunity that literally half the players that are going out there on defense is. Is. Are faces that you haven't even seen yet this season or you've. You've seen only the last week or two since the bye week. So I just. It's really hard to understand or, or even guess. And then of course, obviously, the, The. The elephant in the room with what's going on with what happened with Marshawn Nealon and how that's affecting the real human beings that are playing on this team, like you said, and the energy of the team and what they're going to feel like. Because I do think that, you know, early on there's going to be, you know, a push, I think, to kind of be excited to, to play for Marshawn and, and be inspired. But there's. I think there also is a point late in the game where you've had an incredibly long two weeks with, with this whole situation, and there's a chance that you're exhausted. So, yeah, it's just so much unknown and so many angles to what's going on with the Dallas Cowboys right now. It's just a very specifically difficult week to try to predict what's going to happen.
Marcus Mosher
And this is the first game the Cowboys will play in what they play about two weeks, but they play four games in the next 18 days. This is the most winnable of the four games.
Landon McCool
Absolutely.
Marcus Mosher
If you, if you want, we should talk about this real quick. Yeah, the. The action on Sunday did not go the Cowboys wave. You were hoping that we're going to sneak in as maybe a wild card team or at least be in the running with Carolina winning, with Chicago winning, with Green Bay winning. Your only chances if you win the division. Right. Yeah, so. But we're kind of past all that. We just want to see the Cowboys playing better football that they can build on. It's going to be really tough to do that over the next couple weeks. That's why you got to get a win here on Monday Night Football.
Landon McCool
Yeah, I mean, look, Washington's kind of not going the right direction. The Giants are playing good football at times maybe, but they, they still feel like obviously with the injury, the dart not going the right direction. You still have them still on your schedule, but outside of that, like, this is probably the only real win, like, truly winnable game that isn't going to be a situation where you sneak one out right where you're going.
Marcus Mosher
This might be the last time they are favored until they play the giants on week 18.
Landon McCool
Team yeah, and I think that's a fair statement because if you just look at the schedule, it's, it's brutal. Even with the kind of changes that we've seen since the beginning of the season, these are all very, very good football teams that you're gonna be playing these next couple weeks. Getting a win here is at least getting off in the right foot, getting some positivity rolling. And if, if you're gonna beat these teams, you got to believe you can beat them. And it starts this week.
Marcus Mosher
Last thing, there's some excitement about this Cowboys team because it's different. And for me, that's, that's all I wanted. The last couple weeks have been pretty rough. At least there's something fun and new to watch with the Styles Cowboys team. But that's it for today's show. We want to thank you for making Locked on Cowboys your first listen every single day.
