defensive player just became available. We'll tell you why the Cowboys should pursue him next. You are Locked on Cowboys, your daily Dallas Cowboys podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast network. Your team every day. Welcome back. I am your host Marcus Mosher. He is Landon McCool and on today's show we are answering your Twitter questions including what's going on with Caleb Downs? Who's your favorite flawed player in this draft but Landon, right before we jumped on the the podcast we got some news from Field Yates over on ESPN who said that the Browns and reigning defensive player of the year Miles Garrett agreed to some modified language in his contract that provides some cap flexibility for the Browns going forward. That is a really fancy way of saying that they delayed a big roster bonus for Miles Garrett that was due to him today 26 million until I believe it's late in August. And the reason why that's important is now he is a much more tradable player than he was a couple days ago. And with the Browns in rebuild mode and with them proposing this new deal where you can trade first round picks up to five years out, it sure seems like Miles Garrett could be available this offseason for the right price. So my question to you what's the right price and should the Cowboys Cowboys explore this?
Marcus Mosher
I would have to think that the right price is going to be three and more first round picks and I think yeah, the Cowboys should do this. I mean I look, listen, there are very few players in the league that are worthy of that kind of payment. Right. And that, and it's a big payment. The Cowboys are kind of almost unique. Well, actually not that uniquely. If I say this right, the Cowboys are in a position to pay this maybe better than some other teams. Right. Because they have two first round picks available to them this year because they are on a shortened window or they're attacking a short sighted window here. I think that they are kind of in a situation that, you know, if anyone is going to be available to pay that hefty price, it's, it's, it's going to be, I mean not just Dallas, but Dallas is certainly in striking distance here. Right? Yeah.
Landon McCool
A lot of the other teams that have multiple first round picks this year include like Miami, Cleveland's one of them. The Chiefs, they don't really have the cap space to do this. There's just not a lot of teams that are again in the position that Dallas is in. But I think there's going to be a lot of people that are going to look at this and be like, well, why did you trade away Micah Parsons for only two first round picks and then suddenly give away three first round picks and more for a player who is five years older than what Parsons is?
Marcus Mosher
Well, every day or so we'll know that as we've talked about quite a bit, that you don't trade for the player, you trade for the contract. Right. And that's where this really works out for the Cowboys. Why don't you read out the numbers and what the salary hits would be for the next few years?
Landon McCool
Yeah, this is, it's pretty shocking right here. So these are the cap hits that the Cowboys would take on for the next three years. 9.1 million in 2026, incredibly doable. 17 million in 2027, 21.3 million in 2028. And then it goes up to 58 million in 2029. But again that's when the new TV money comes in. There's no guaranteed money in there. It is an insanely cheap contract for the best defensive player in the league. And it basically comes out to when you look at like some of the void years at the end, about 30 million a year. And think about what Micah Parsons signed last year. He wanted a new deal for 47 million a year. You are saving roughly $17 million a year. And it is a way more flexible contract where the first three years, I mean, he's not getting paid anything against the cap. It makes a ton of financial sense for Dallas.
Marcus Mosher
Let's let's also, let's also put this out and, and please go back and listen to the podcast. I have probably hundreds of hours of us saying this. Micah Parsons is not as good a player as Miles Garrett is.
Landon McCool
No, he's the next. He's the next best thing.
Marcus Mosher
But even then, he' probably still a tear down from Miles Garrett. Miles Garrett is in the conversation for being one of the greatest defensive ends who's ever played the game. And we're getting him potentially in his prime. You are literally trading for a walking hall of Fame jacket in the middle of his prime of his career. So it's worth it. Like, it's one of the few players that. It truly is worth the deal. I want to kind of throw in a couple other things real quick that I think are interesting that we talked about. Right, Real quick. Yeah, yeah, go ahead.
Landon McCool
Because I think this is really important. This is my pushback with the, the Max Crosby trade is. I felt like you were seeing a declining player. Right. It's still a really, really good player, but somebody who was noticeably worse as a pass rusher over the last two years. That's not the case for Miles Garrett. I mean, the sack totals are one. Yes, he broke the all time sack record last year, but he had a 25 win rate in 2025 that is the second highest of his career. Like he's actually getting better as a pass rusher as he gets older.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. And, and, and look, the other thing too is about this whole situation is is there interest here by him? Right. Is he interested in coming? And, and we don't know about specifically Dallas, although we know that he is a Dallas guy. He's from Dallas and I know he likes being around. I think he does still live in Dallas, if I'm not mistaken. And on top of that, he's born in Arlington. Yeah, I mean, it's Arlington Heights. Arlington. Martin superstar, you know, he's absolutely one of the best players who ever come out of the city of Dallas. Right. And the other aspect of this that real quick that I think is worth mentioning is that in order for the Browns to make this change in his contract, he had to sign on to this. This is an actual change in the language that. Which meant that he had to approve that. So this clearly indicates that. Why. Why else would you delay a $26 million check for no reason unless you're. You're willing to do it for something else, which would be the opportunity to potentially go somewhere else. I think he's at a point in his career that he's looking to go somewhere where he thinks he can, you know, do a little bit more winning. Having been in Cleveland for a little while, this could be the golden egg that falls in the Cowboys lap if they could find a way to pull this off.
Landon McCool
So again, it's going to cost a ton and we can talk about the cost at another time. But my question for you, again, assuming that you're giving up picks 12 and 20 this year, can you build a viable defense around Miles Garrett up front with Quinn and Williams, Kenny Clark, Rashawn, Gary Donovan as a rocku Given the state of your linebackers and the state of your cornerback room right now, I
Marcus Mosher
think the linebacker room is where you're going to be. You're going to be struggling, right? I think corner gets papered over a little bit because you have Miles Garrett on the front end of it. I do think we've talked about the fact that we feel like the Cowboys have done enough to raise the floor about the cornerback room that you at least feel about it. I think you feel a lot better again with Miles Garrett coming off. Maybe you still go get one more veteran corner knowing that you probably aren't going to get one in the draft. Right. But I think you still got to solve a starting linebacker, which is going to be an issue. But again, like there are issues abound every direction you look at the way this, this, this goes. Even if you draft pure and things go well, there's still some luck that has to be involved here. I'll take my chances with the best player in all of football for the last 10 years.
Landon McCool
Yeah. And I would think with Quinn and Williams and Miles Garrett up front, you're probably not going to need to blitz very often to get pressure. Like those two guys alone will take care of that. And if you get anything from Rashan, Gary and Donovan as a raku, you're going to be fine. That allows you to drop more guys into coverage. My guess is that they would be really into the linebacker market using these day three picks for probably just to try to find veterans. But what a trade like this would do, it would speed up the clock and it would officially put the Cowboys on all in notice. And listen, you're not going to have first round picks to develop for 2029 and 20, 2030 for that window. Like it's, it's 2026 and 2027 and then we'll see beyond that. It's, it's really bold, but it's the kind of move they probably need to make. If they are actually serious about wanting to win. Because I have my concerns about the defense. You add a a force multiplier like Miles Garrett to your defense, and I do think you can get to being average right away because I've seen it in Cleveland. Like I've I've watched this Cleveland defense with crap around him forever go up against some of the best offenses in the league and shut them down. Because you've got this guy that is so unstoppable up front that he can win you games by himself.
Marcus Mosher
You got a coverage expert as your defensive coordinator. Now go get a pass rush expert in a Hall of Famer and then let's see what kind of defense we can cook up with those guys.
Landon McCool
All right, let's let's answer your Twitter questions while we cool ourselves down a little bit after thinking about Miles. Scare Well, I'm sure there's going to be a lot more coming out about this over the next couple weeks as we get closer to the draft. Tap the link in the show notes or go to locked on cowboys supercast.com all right, land, let's get to some Twitter questions and this first one is from a longtime listener, Goran. He wants to know who are your favorite flawed players in this year's draft.
Marcus Mosher
Almost didn't unmute. First of all. I mean I guess we're going to talk about Caleb Downs, who I guess falls into this category unaware. I, you know, I, I think just because we spent a lot of time talking about this flaw, I'm, you know, I'm going to talk about it, I guess in a positive way because he's my favorite flaw player, Reuben Baines. I mean look, I mean it's, it's that people have talked about like there's, it's not just the arm length, right. He doesn't have necessarily the everything in the as a pass rusher is a, a get off guy necessarily, but he just wins so easily in such a translatable way at the NFL with power and the way he gets underneath guys and he's so flexible that it's, it's hard not to just again, it's the classic thing where yeah, you know that he's got problems, but you've also watched him overcome those problems to be an absolute elite producer at the highest possible levels in college football. I don't really have any, any qualms into being able to translate that to the NFL.
Landon McCool
And mine is a similar player, Cassius Howe from Texas A and M, who also has shorter arms. Now he doesn't have the power that Bain has and he's not going to be drafted as high, but man, I've seen so many of these guys over the last four or five years that are the £250 six foot three edge rushers that, you know, don't really use their arms or their long arms to make it an impact. Yeah, Nick Benito, again, this is a Bronco player that's playing in a similar scheme. Fell to the second round because people were concerned about his weight and now he's One of the best pass rushers in the league, Nick Herbert, who we're trying to trade for every week on this podcast, is 240 pounds with 31 inch arms. And like, I, if you're not going to draft a pass rusher at 12 and you want somebody that can give you juice off the edge, I think cash as hell probably is my favorite player after David Bailey, Ruben Bane and those guys because he is just so explosive.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I mean, I, he's a great player. And, and I think again in the year where you see a lot of these guys coming out as first rounds, first round players, you question the overall questioning of, of, of those players, right? Like if, if you've got five of these guys that's ranked at everybody's top 100, it's like, then is it really a flaw at this point or is this just the way the guys are playing nowadays? So, yeah, I think that's the thing with pass rushes and address especially is that you really, you get a lot of different flavors of these and depending on what kind of system you're playing, you can use a couple of different types of these, of these body. Body types of these guys. Right. I think we spent way too long kind of poo pooing these smaller guys with maybe not quite as long arms because we're, we didn't understand that arm length is a data point, not, not a threshold that has to be met. You know, and you take the data point, you watch the film, does he look like he, his short arms are giving him problems. And sometimes that is the case and sometimes these players have to, have to have to find ways to overcome that. But if they do find those ways to overcome that, then it's don't double count it, right? Don't double count the. Oh, he doesn't have short arms. And I'm upset that he's losing in this particular way. Right? So if he has a way to overcome it, then, then that's enough. And I think that that's the end of the kind of conversation about his arm.
Landon McCool
Who else do you have that's a flawed player that you just can't stop loving?
Marcus Mosher
I mean, that's the thing is that like this whole class is kind of filled with flawed players, right? Like there, if anything, it's like, it's hard to find the player that, the unflawed player. But I guess, you know, again, like, if, if we're gonna go that route, I really, we'll talk about him more, more in a little bit later this week. But I've gone back and watched again more of Chris Johnson from San Diego State and I just, you know, he doesn't, again, he doesn't have perfect arm length, especially for a guy that's as tall as he is. But he just, and he's. Maybe he's not like a cornerback one in your system, but I just think he's a super solid cornerback too. He loves to tackle, he's a good tackle. He'll bring the, the ball carriers down, doesn't miss tackles. He's solid in coverage, he's heady, he's. He can change direction in a whole bunch of different ways. I'm just a big fan of his.
Landon McCool
I think that's a good one. Mine's K McDonald's. I. And the reason that he's a flawed player is he doesn't give you really any pass rush. Like he's just not a pass rusher at all. And I know there are people that feel like why draft a defensive tackle in round one that doesn't give you any pass rush? And I get it. Who might only be on the field for 40 of the snaps. It's because he is so good at stopping the run. He had 29 stops last year as a 20 year old at Ohio State. And like if you compare that to other first round prospects who are like really, really good, like, like Dexter Lawrence from Clemson, I think that's like 9 more than what Lawrence ever had in a single season. And this is a guy that wasn't playing every single down. He is just that good against the run. And I know we talked about it before but like if the Cowboys picked him at 20, I would be a huge fan because man, you put him with Quinn and Williams and Kenny Clark. Now you don't have to put so many resources to stopping the run. You can just stay in nickel or you can stay in base and I think you're going to be just fine. I love McDonald. I think somebody's going to get a heck of a player with him in the 20s or 30s.
Marcus Mosher
I actually think that he gives you at least something in the past rush. Right. Like I mean not, not in, in the counting stats, but he is definitely going to push the front of that pocket and allow the guys on the sides to kind of get through. So he's not going to allow quarterbacks to kind of squirt out the front because he's going to be occupying blockers. But I agree just you're drafting him because of the dominance that he, he shows you in the run game. And, and like, he's the guy that is. Was keeping guys like Sunny Styles and Reese clean and. And allowing them to float the ball the way they did. It's not like those guys needed to be kept clean because those guys were destroying blockers every time they encountered them. But it's nice to know that you got a guy like McDonald to keep you clean when you need it.
Landon McCool
I've got one more. Do you have any others?
Marcus Mosher
No. Let's hear it.
Landon McCool
Okay. I mean, and this is somebody that we've talked about a lot, but it's Kyle Lewis, the linebacker from Pittsburgh.
Marcus Mosher
Great one.
Landon McCool
He's small, he's short. You're going to have to get over that because he just makes every single play. And I think I've seen now the, like the 49ers had Dee Winters last year, who I think started every game 5 foot 11, 220 pounds. And that's just a guy that you get into game days and he's awesome because he's flying to the football. We saw Kyle Lewis dominate the coverage drills at the Senior Bowl. He was great in coverage at Pittsburgh. He was a former safety. If you can just look past the size, and that's why you're getting him on day two, I think you're going to get a heck of a football player.
Marcus Mosher
I think if I remember correctly that I said I want this guy as part of my football pursuit drill. Like, I just want him as part of my defense, as one of the 11 guys that is tasked with chasing the football because I just think he's a madman when he does it. And whether you're playing him at will or he's stepping out two or three steps even further outside of that to play like an overhang position in your defense, I think, you know, he can. He has the coverage snap chops to not get destroyed out there. And he's such a solid tackler and pursuit player that, yeah, he's going to be a benefit to almost any defense that he joins.
Landon McCool

Welcome back to the Locked on Cowboys podcast. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen every single day. All right, our last question is about Caleb Downs. This one is from John. He wants to know, I heard Daniel Jeremiah say that several teams have Emmanuel McNeil, Warren and Dylan Theen ahead of downs.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah.
Landon McCool
And that he thinks it's more likely than not downs goes between picks 10 and 20 than between picks one and nine. He wants to know, what do we make of that? Landon, why don't you go first?
Marcus Mosher
I mean, I'm popping champagne. Like, you know, I mean, that's great news. Wonderful. Great. I mean, look, I think we, I think we've expressed how we feel about Caleb Downs. And, and, and I, I really do feel like Caleb Downs is shaping up to be maybe even more than bang, right the, oh my God, we overthought it guy. Like, like, you know, and, and, and if that's how it works, that's how it works. But look, I understand he doesn't have the elite profile, like athletic profile that, that, that you're, that some people are looking for in a top 10 pick. And I get that. But it's not like he, it's not like has anyone ever been concerned about his athleticism at any point? Like when you, when you're watching the tape, like, that's, that's the thing. It's like, is there any point when you're like, man, I sure wish Caleb Downs was a better athlete. Like, I just, I just, it's, it's just not a thing. And, and so I understand that there's like a, a checkboxing thing that has to happen with, with, with, with especially cornerbacks and defensive backs. And, and, and there certainly is, is a, you know, it's a stopwatch position. I get that. I get that. But to me, Caleb Downs, whether you want to play him at safety, whether you want to play him at nickel, he's been probably in the top five best players in college football since he stepped on the college football field through multiple defensive coordinators at multiple schools. And you know, again, his resume speaks for itself. So if people want to overthink that or if there's a medical thing, I mean, I get that. But like, if people want to overthink this and let a smart player, incredible player like that fall to The Cowboys at 12, who am I to stop them?
Landon McCool
It shouldn't be surprising because we generally see safeties fall and even guys that are bigger, you know, or better athletes like Derwin James. Derwin James fell to 17 and I, I never understood that. Kyle Hamilton, who had, I think it was back to back all American seasons at Notre Dame, and he was 6 foot 4, he fell to 14. Teams just don't value these safeties. And, and I think the ones that do get valued more are like these supreme athletes. And it's not to say that Downs isn't a very good athlete, but I don't know, like he's, I think he's what, 6 foot, 200 pounds? Like he's, he's a good size safety.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah.
Landon McCool
But he's not 6, 3, 2, 20 and running a 4 3. So there is part of that. I also don't think he's like Ed Reed coming out of school that had nine interceptions in one season or anything like that. So I won't be shocked if he falls, but I won't be shocked if the Cowboys are the benefactor here as well.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, and look, I mean, we've seen this story play out a lot of different times, including those, those guys that you just mentioned that people overthink it. I mean, if you remember, they overthought Derwin James's injury history, which, you know, again, to their credit, he, he dealt with some injuries early in his career and it affected him, you know, with. When the Ravens, you know, went to the college pro day. Like, I'm pretty sure he ran like a high, like a 4 6, right.
Landon McCool
Or I think it was a 470 at the pro day.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, like it was, it was like a 4 7. So, yeah, I mean, there were flaws to these guys that could. Again, for a team that is looking for an excuse to not draft a safety. There you go. Right? That's why you, that's how you talk yourself out of drafting a, of not drafting an all pro type player. Caleb Downs, similar situation. Oh, okay. Well, yeah, he checks all the boxes and he's got elite tape and he's a multiple time all American and he played for Nick Saban and, and all these great. He played in two of the greatest defenses in college football history. But, but he's kind of just a good athlete, not a great athlete. And it's like, brother, like, you know, come on, watch the tape and figure out this is a good football player. Just draft that guy. How about that? How about we do that?
Landon McCool
Well, that's. I feel the same way, but there are teams ahead of Dallas that I think are in different stages of their rebuild and frankly, that's why they're drafting ahead of Dallas. Like a perfect example is Miami at 11. Yeah, Miami needs just about everything. A safety isn't going to move the needle very much. In fact, they just traded away make it Fitzpatrick, who was awesome last year for almost nothing. What they want are probably foundational pieces either on the offensive line, on the defensive line, or at wide receiver to really help the next quarterback. And I think that's how someone like, you know, that's how you pass on downs for a. Again, I'm just making this up. A Monroe Freeling or a Makai Lemon who are lesser players, but maybe play or not, maybe definitely have more positional value.
Marcus Mosher
Well, and the other thing about this too is that even let's take, you know, Derwin James, for example. Derwin James has had tons of defensive coordinators in his career at this point. Right. Not all of them, not all of them played him in a way that really accentuated his skill set. And so there, there is a, a certain amount of. If you're not in the right defense or with the right defensive coordinator who knows how to unlock your skills. I mean, look, like I just said, guys like Nick Saban know how to do this. Guys, guys like Patricia who have been underneath Belichick before, they know how to play these kind of guys, they know how to deal with guys like Arvel Reese, you know, and Caleb Downs, and they understand how to use that versatility and flexibility against an offense. And so, yeah, if you have a defensive coaching staff that doesn't know how to do that doesn't know how to unlock that. I could see how you would value him a little bit less, but don't let that be a barrier for the Cowboys because they do have one of these guys I think that can figure out what to do with Caleb Downs.
