Dallas Cowboys eye a linebacker makeover after acquiring a crucial Day 2 pick. Could Kyle Louis, Josiah Trotter, or Deontae Lawson become the answer at the heart of Christian Parker’s defense?

Marcus Mosher
Welcome back to the Locked on Cowboys podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network. Your team every day. We'd like to thank you for making us the number one sports podcast network. I am your host, Marcus Mosher. He is Lane and McCool. And on today's show, we're talking about some day two linebackers that the Cowboys might be interested now that they have a day two pick after the Oso Digizua trade. They own pick 92, but we expect the Cowboys to be active in trades, whether that's trading down from 12 or 20 or moving up from 92. So we're looking at three linebackers, Josiah Trotter, Deontay Lawson and Kyle Lewis who could fit their defense. I want to start with Kyle Lewis. We've actually talked a little bit on this show before. We saw him at the Senior Bowl. We saw him at the NFL combine. I know you did a big scouting report on him. What do you got?
Lane McCool
Yeah, I mean, first of all, came into college not super highly ranked. He was, I think the, the three star, one over 1,000th ranked processing prospect in the 2022 class, you know, and, and you can kind of see why a little bit because he is kind of, I would imagine when he came out of high school he was kind of a tweener. A little bit like he is now, right where he's, you know, was it six foot 220 right now, 31 and a quarter inch arms. So you know, he's, he's definitely on the lower end of, of size for, for linebacker and, and I wouldn't have been surprised if he played a lot of safety in high school as well. So. And you kind of see that athleticism and tape, right? He's an explosive mover. What he, what he loses in kind of typical linebacker size, he makes up for with atypical athleticism. He's an explosive mover. Heat seeking missile as a tackler. I mean that's, that's line one with this guy. He's a run and hit coverage linebacker. Classic float of the ball the ball linebacker. Excellent pursuit, some experience as an overhang defender. I mean just generally very excellent in space in a way that you wouldn't expect a linebacker to be necessarily extremely reactive in coverage. He's excellent at mirroring for his body type. You see him, you know, easily keep up with running backs and tight ends, but you know, he could even, you know, keep up with wide receivers at times. I mean he's that kind of mover. He can line up in the slot and, and press on receivers a little bit. He had 200 plus snaps in the slot according to PFF. But a lot of times what that is, is that's a will linebacker who steps out into the slot as a part of a motion set. But I mean he's still out there operating in space without any problems. You know, versatile enough. Yeah, we mentioned that. Versatile enough to play out in space. 200 plus snaps in each of the last two seasons. His speed can also be his worst enemy at times. There are times when he over pursues on plays and he needs to kind of gather his feet a little bit. Uh, but I, I think we are all aware of exactly what kind of. You know, it doesn't take you very long to, to do his evaluation because he's exactly kind of who you think he is, right? He's ext. You know, as an undersized linebacker, he makes up for it with his speed. He's a sideline to sideline linebacker. I think the thing that maybe stands out for him a little bit than some of these other linebackers is that he's such a good mirror athlete that I think he actually could play some overhang. He could play safety if you potentially wanted to move him to like a box. Safety or even sort of a nickel roll like we've talked about. Like the Cowboys wanting a bigger body at the nickel roll. I, I bet he could do something close to that at least, you know, part time. So. Very interesting guy. My. Where does he win? He's like I said, running hit coverage linebacker. You guys know the type will flow to the ball. He's very much that. That type. My unanswered question is, is he an every down linebacker or do you want to kind of, you know, move him around a little bit on early downs and to kind of make sure that he's. You've got big bulk up front, maybe you play him at the overhang and then he's a nickelbacker. I think he could be an interesting guy for a couple different teams that are not only looking for a linebacker but maybe more hybrid back end defender. He's an interesting guy. He really opened eyes in the Senior bowl for sure.
Marcus Mosher
Do, do you think he fits Christian Parker's defense?
Lane McCool
I think that's where I've kind of been trying to piece it together. I think he could. Yes. Because I think he could definitely play kind of more of that. Will I. I question how well he would fit in Christian Parker's defense with Overshone though. I, I think that's where I think there's a lot of crossover between those and.
Marcus Mosher
And that was going to be my next question because I do think he plays the same position as Overshone. And the thing is if you're drafting a linebacker this year, ideally you would like to get somebody that has contrasting styles. But I also don't know if you can draft based on demaria Nova shown and that it really sucks to say that but like he has not been able to finish a season healthy and his contract is up and I if to me if Lewis is the best linebacker that's available on the board, I'm not passing him up for another guy because I, I just can't count on over shown. And I, I gotta say just at the top, I'm a sucker for linebackers like Kyle Lewis. The guys that are undersized.
Lane McCool
Yeah.
Marcus Mosher
Fly to the football and have production. And this is where I struggle with someone like CJ Allen from Georgia who I almost made a bad joke about. Should be in this round two, day two discussion that in 2024 Kyle Lewis had more tackles for a loss and more interceptions and more pass deflections than CG Allen had his entire career at Georgia. Like this guy is just so productive and you put him on the field and he find the football, finds him. You watch him in the Senior bowl, and it's the best coverage I've ever seen in the one on one drills from a linebacker in the third round. Like, man, sign me up. This guy can play.
Lane McCool
Yeah, I mean, I'm certainly not saying no. I. I think the concerns that I would have about his specific fit with, with the Cowboys personnel are, are what we would call back burner issues. Right. Like, I mean, nitpicking, because I'm not. You're right. I'm not necessarily not picking the most talented guy just because I have a linebacker who's on an expiring contract who can't. Who also, by the way, has had a problem staying healthy. So, yeah, I agree with you. I like him a lot. And honestly, like I said, in a defense like this one, even if he's not playing linebacker the whole time, you could find extreme use for a guy like this who, who chases the football the way he does. So, I mean, obviously a huge fan of his. I think that much was clear. You know, we made that much clear for both of us when we talked about him at the Senior Bowl. But going back to the tape, and especially, like you said, the 2024 tape is elite. Like, and, and I almost.
Marcus Mosher
Good.
Lane McCool
I almost wonder if, like, people kind of not didn't write him off, but kind of, you know, discounted him a little bit because he didn't quite meet the lofty heights that he had in 2024. Even though his 2025 tape is very good as well, it's just not quite as good. I think his Senior bowl is closer to his 2024 tape from what we saw, than maybe his 2025.
Marcus Mosher
The other thing I really like about Lewis is he's one of the few linebackers in this class that you feel good in coverage. You feel good about him stopping the run sideline to sideline, and he's an effective blitzer. Now, he's not, obviously he's not Micah Parsons, he's not our Val Reese, but he's very good at, like, dipping under blocks and finding little holes to fit through where he can destroy the quarterback. Like, he's just one of the most well rounded linebackers in this class. And yeah, he's small, and you're gonna have to get over that. He's sub 6 foot tall and he's gonna play probably closer to 220 than 230, but if you can close your eyes and forget about that stuff, you're gonna get an awesome player.
Lane McCool
Yeah, absolutely. And Again, like I said, even if you don't want to play him at linebacker early, you could find use as him and then overhang as a slot guy specifically. I would even would not be afraid to move him around a little bit too. Just but he's just a guy that you want on your defense chasing after football.
Marcus Mosher
And I think for the Cowboys, like if you're drafting a linebacker, let's say in round three, around pick 92, you're just wanting a guy that you feel like can come in and give you snaps. Like I I think this is a guy that you play on passing downs. Every passing down he's on the field, you find maybe that downhill thumper either through trade or you sign someone like a Landon Roberts who's been around forever to do that role. And this is the guy that comes on the field in third and eight who can move all around. I want this player on my football team. We'll see if the Cowboys agree. Let's talk about a more traditional linebacker, and that is Josiah Trotter, who is getting some pretty good comps and his stock is really, really rising. A Another very interesting linebacker prospect. I really liked his tape. What about you?
Lane McCool
Yeah, I agree. Another guy, three star guy, despite, you know, the name brand there was not super well high. Highly recruited out of. Out of high school of the 520, first rated player in the 2023 class. I love this body type for linebackers, right? Like he's very high cut with like very little torso. It's weird. Like he. So he. So he mounts. So he's very kind of difficult for offensive linemen to hit at times. He's got long, powerful legs and he's got good arm length as well. You know, he's very physical. I mean, that's the first line I get with him. Physical insert linebacker. Very much the kind of opposite player from. From Lewis in a lot of ways. He will mix it up in the gap with any offensive lineman. I mean, I think the first tape I watched was him versus Alabama and just giving Kaden Proctor all he could handle on some of these snaps getting in his face. He moves very well in certain directions, but he's not an elite mover of the position necessarily. Like, I think he goes from gap to gap very well because he does have long legs. So he kind of sidesteps to gap very, very cleanly. But he's not necessarily a guy that is, you know, turning his, flipping his hips and running up the pole with like super great speed. He can get it done, but that's not like the strength of his game the way that would be for Lewis, right? Good vision through traffic. He could play peekaboo with the back waiting to pounce on the ball carry once he commits to a gap. Like I said, moves very well laterally from gap with those long, long strides. He's athletic enough to keep up with the tight end running across the field and he's reactive in zone coverage. I don't want to give the impression that he's bad in coverage because I think he's decent and that's why I think he's going to be a day two pick potentially is that his strength is being more downhill. But I think we're seeing more and more of this is that you get a, a huge bump as a downhill type linebacker if you can just function in coverage. And I think he can function in coverage. Like he's not going to be great at it. He's not going to be a guy that's like getting. Yeah. Like doesn't give you a bunch much in the way of ball production in the past game. Like he's not necessarily going to deny the ball but in zone coverage he's going to be a solid, you know, top down player. He's going to be able to tackle really well. He, he's not going to give up like big, you know, catches underneath that are going to break free. Because he's such a solid tackler, he alternates between slightly below average to average in coverage. Like I mentioned, doesn't give you much. Oh, I mentioned that. Long legs to allow him to coil up and play with good ready position, good vision and awareness in his drops. He picks up targets well moving through his zones like he has skills to in coverage. He's just not like, you know, a lockdown guy. And he's not an elite, elite mirror athlete the way that you see with Lewis. Right. Where does he win? He's physical. Early down linebacker with coverage upside. Unanswered questions. Can you get by with him as in coverage as a linebacker enough for him to be a 3 down linebacker early in his career?
Marcus Mosher
I mean ideally you put him with Kyle Lewis and now we're cooking, right?
Lane McCool
Yeah. Right. Well together these two guys. Yeah.
Marcus Mosher
The other thing we need to mention just off the top is his dad is Jeremiah Trotter, the linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles. And again, I am a sucker for NFL bloodlines. Like usually these guys that have grown up around the game and have been in locker rooms and they see what it's like, the, you know, the day to day process of being an NFL player generally they turn out pretty well. Like it's not always, but the floor is so much higher here. I really like Trotter. I, I know it's easy just to give him the Nick Bolton comp because he played at Missouri.
Lane McCool
Yeah.
Marcus Mosher
Honestly there is a lot of similarities in their game where these are guys that are downhill physical tacklers and if you can just hide them enough in coverage, I think you're going to get a plus player. And the thing again, I hate to keep bringing up C.J. allen, but I'm going to do it again. This is a 20 year old player who was productive in the SEC. Why do I need to take CJ Allen who is a very similar style of player when I can get Josiah Trotter around or maybe two rounds later when Trotter is younger and bigger. And honestly I do think that matters.
Lane McCool
Yeah, I think that certain something to the idea that like, and that's kind of the general issue I think with a lot of positions at the back end of the first half. Right. Of the first round. Right. Is that you know, a lot of these guys you're, you're drafting at a position that is already really deep and we talked about that kind of plateau that happens. Linebacker may be the most plateauing of all these positions. Right. Where you could get Jacob Rodriguez, you could get Trotter, you could get all these guys and, and how. What's the real difference between them and the guy like C.J. allen that you're going to have to get at the bottom of the first round too? Right. We're talking a lot about C.J. allen here. But I think that the other thing that's interesting about Trotter to me you talked about like guys that you know with NFL bloodlines. It's always interesting to me when you have a player who plays the same position as their dad but has a completely different body type than like he doesn't look anything like his dad like at all like and, and his dad was a much, you know, kind of a bigger like, you know, not as top heavy, not as long legged athlete. So it's interesting to see that they both have a very kind of similar playing mentality but they have different body types. So yeah, he's a fascinating player. Honestly way different than I. What I expected when I turned the tape off.
Marcus Mosher
That's the other thing that really attracted me to Trotter. When you watch his tape, there is just an energy about him.
Lane McCool
Yeah.
Marcus Mosher
That is infectious. And again I, we, you and I have talked about this for the last two years. We want more players that have. And again this is, I know this, it's cheesy to say it, but this dog mentality, I felt like last year they just really didn't have it. And you saw when they lost Jordan Lewis in the secondary how much they really missed that. And I think DeMarcus Lawrence had that a little bit. When they lost Lawrence, it had a big impact. I know Trotter has weaknesses and I know he has faults and they're gonna, that's why you're gonna be able to get him probably somewhere between picks 50 and 100, but I'm willing to live with that because of how physical he is and how aggressive he is as a linebacker.
Lane McCool
Yeah, we talked about it. Right. The game is shifting a little bit back towards the run game a little bit. And as it does, these kind of guys are going to start becoming more and more valuable. You could still get in on the ground floor on this by getting this guy, because a guy like this in next year's draft or maybe even two years from now is probably going top of the day of day two. Right. Because of their value is just going to increase a little bit more. If you could just give be enough of a. Of a linebacker that you have a skill set that you are. You specialize in the runner pass and you're at least passable on the other. On the other aspect, you're going to get a lot of looks. Because today's NFL linebacker is maybe the one position that is so out of tune with the way that the game is shifting that there aren't a lot of linebackers out there that are adept at playing both the run in the past.
Marcus Mosher
One more quick thing on Trotter, I mentioned his age. He doesn't turn 21 until April, but he also just hasn't played a ton. He had 628 snaps at West Virginia, 516 at Missouri. So I think there is. When you get a guy that's this productive at that young of an age, I think the ceiling can be really, really high. Now, it might take him a little bit to get there, but this is a player that I want to be in on because I think the upside is so high. I think he's going to be able to come right in and give you plus production as a run player. And I don't know if you have to spend a premium pick on them. If you look at the consensus board right now, Landon Arvell reese is at 3 overall or third overall, Sunny Styles at 5, CJ Allen at 28. And then Josiah Trotter's all the way down at 68. Like, this is a guy that could go in the third round. And I think you're getting a starting NFL linebacker right away.
Lane McCool
Yeah. And a guy that you know obviously isn't going to be surprised by the life in the NFL. Right. Like, he's going to have pretty good knowledge of exactly what it, what it means to be a professional or somebody that he can pick up the phone pretty regularly and talk to. About the whole situation. So yeah, I mean, again, another benefit of getting some of these guys with it with bloodlines is that they, they're, the lights are not too big for them. They at least know what they're stepping into. So yeah, I, I again, I'm a big fan. I think, I think he's appropriately priced in, in the kind of late second, early third round and I'm, I'm hoping, cross my fingers, that he falls the Cowboys somehow at the bottom of the third.
Marcus Mosher
All right, let's talk about another linebacker, Deontay lost from Alabama. Would he fit Christian Parker's defense? We'll get to that next.
Lane McCool
Next.

Welcome back to the Lot Cowboys podcast. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen every single day. All right, Lynn, let's rock. Wrap up here with Deontay Lawson, a linebacker from Alabama who is a little bit further down on the consensus board than what the other two that we talked about, Kyle Lewis and Josiah Trotter. But what did you see from Lawson's tape?
Lane McCool
Yeah, interesting guy, right? Kind of taller but but still undersized. He's 63226, which is interesting. It's kind of interesting size 31 and 78 arm which are know. Okay. I mean it's under, it's under normal but it's not terrible. He's got a very balanced game. Like I mean this is a guy who, he was a four star recruit. I mean he went to Bama, right? So he's a 52nd ranked prospect in the 2021 class. He, he has like a very balanced game. So he's, he's decent against the run, he's decent against the pass. He's adept at reading QB's eyes and coverage from zone drops. Even though I, I think he struggles picking up targets in like in his zones as they come in. You know he's really good at looking into the backfield and, and, and trying to read what the quarterback's doing. So if he's in like a hook zone like he can you know, play the ball. If he's in a robber situation, that's probably his best situation. But like you know, when he's being asked to kind of drop into the flats or, or run the pole a little bit like I think he kind of loses targets in his space a little bit. He has the athleticism to keep up with most tight ends on crossers and man coverage. So he's, he's a good enough athlete to again be useful at times in coverage. He pulls trigger. He pulls the trigger to come down quickly, come downhill quickly in the run game. It's, it's really weird because his best block defeating techniques are mostly like based on his footwork. He, because he doesn't really have the hand technique or the size to kind of regularly mix it up with offensive line lineman and kind of stack and shed or at least that's just not how he is beating blocks right now. Not a consistent enough tackler in open space. I mean this was my real issue with him is that it felt like there were times when even when he was making the tackle like he almost feels like oh that that guy could have slipped away from him because he dives at the guys he wraps around it. It just feels like that like tacklers slip away from him a lot in his tackles. So I don't know what that if it's not like if that is that core strength or something. But he's not alligator rolling guys all the way to the ground the way that you'd like to see. He's got good reactive athleticism but it's not good enough to overcome some of the bad angles you see him take at times. Right. And because he's not like that kind of elite runner. There are times when, you know, running backs maybe turn on the juice a little bit trying to get to the corner. He's taken a bad angle and suddenly he's diving to try to make a tackle, which if he was just a little bit more athletic and been able to adjust his angle, he could have made it to the. To the end and tackled the guy. Where does he win? I think he's like, he's a high floor player because I don't think he has a lot of super big weaknesses, but I also don't. But I also don't see like a lot of upside here. Like, I feel like maybe he could gain some weight and be a little bit stronger and that would maybe get him a little bit better as kind of a downhill guy, which is again, what he's trying to do most of the time. But my unanswered questions is, is there upside for him to get better? And I. I think the real overall issue I have with him is that he's one of these guys that. Whose body doesn't match his play style very well. You know, like he. He almost looks like he would be kind of a big time coverage guy, but. But his game is more downhill and he's. And he's not quite physical to match that game, you know.
Marcus Mosher
Well, I'll tell you who it reminds me of. It reminds me a lot of Damone Clark coming out of lsu where you looked at the Mon Clark and you thought, oh, this is going to be an awesome coverage linebacker. You know, he should be able to move really well. And that was just never the case. It was Mon Clark was at his best coming downhill. And honestly, I don't know if you got a chance to watch some of the 20th or 2023 film. I actually think Lawson's most effective skills as a pass rusher, like just coming downhill.
Lane McCool
And that's what he looks most comfortable doing coming down, you know. No doubt.
Marcus Mosher
And I do wonder with Christian Parker probably gonna. He's gonna blitz his linebackers. I think the inside guys more than we've seen in previous years. Maybe this is somebody that is a good scheme fit. But for at least for me and I. Please chime in. He's not a guy that I would feel comfortable drafting inside the top 100 and expecting him to be a starter right away. I think he's somebody that you grab honestly, like more in the Shamar James role, like the, you know, spot that you drafted last year in the fifth round and maybe works is it way into the rotation by the end of his rookie year.
Lane McCool
Yeah, I mean I could easily see this guy working his way into being the starter, but yeah, I, I certainly wouldn't be counting on it.
Marcus Mosher
Right.
Lane McCool
And I, I do, I wouldn't be shocked if he got taken in the fourth round just because again, like, you know, Alabama well trained, you know, well, he's like a high floor player. Right.
Marcus Mosher
But he was a two time captain. Again, it's so easy just to draw parallels. Simone Clark, who was a really highly, you know, high character guy coming out of lsu, I think he goes somewhere early on day three.
Lane McCool
Yeah. And, and you know, I wouldn't be shocked because again, like there's just not a ton of guys who give you something on both sides of, of running pass and I think he can do that at least. I, I don't love his tape enough to draft him in the, in day three, but I wouldn't be shocked. I mean, day of the third round, but I wouldn't be shocked if you, he was taken there.
Marcus Mosher
All right, really quickly before we go, can you stack these three linebackers on how you would like them to be drafted for the Cowboys?
Lane McCool
Man, I, I think, I think for me, Lewis and Trotter are touching tags. And then there's a slight gap or there's a pretty decent gap actually. And then, then Lawson, I would go, I go, the problem is Lewis and, and Trotter are so different. Right.
Marcus Mosher
They're like, that's why I love the linebacker position.
Lane McCool
Yeah, it's a lot of fun.

In this episode, hosts Marcus Mosher and Landon McCool break down Day 2 linebacker prospects that the Dallas Cowboys could target now that the team has another Day 2 pick, acquired via the Osa Odighizuwa trade. The episode zeroes in on three linebacker prospects—Kyle Lewis, Josiah Trotter, and Deontae Lawson—evaluating their fit, skillset, and potential role in Dallas, particularly under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
“What he loses in typical linebacker size, he makes up for with atypical athleticism. Heat-seeking missile as a tackler.” — Landon McCool (02:44)
“If Lewis is the best linebacker that’s available, I’m not passing him up for another guy, because I just can’t count on Overshown.” — Marcus Mosher (06:12)
“You watch him in the Senior Bowl, and it’s the best coverage I’ve ever seen in the one-on-one drills from a linebacker in the third round. Like, man, sign me up.” — Marcus Mosher (07:15)
“Very physical. I mean, that’s the first line I get with him. Physical insert linebacker.” — Landon McCool (13:23)
His father’s credentials suggest high floor and professional mindset.
Compared to Nick Bolton (Chiefs): “Downhill physical tacklers... if you can just hide them enough in coverage, you’re going to get a plus player.”—Marcus (16:44)
Productive, especially given SEC competition and young age (doesn’t turn 21 till April).
Lacks reps but has high ceiling and appealing age/size combo for future development.
Adds “dog mentality” and physical energy Dallas defense sorely missed.
“There is just an energy about him that is infectious.” — Marcus Mosher (18:34)
“He almost looks like he would be a big-time coverage guy, but his game is more downhill and he’s not quite physical to match that game.” — Landon McCool (27:10)
The hosts are unanimous in their preference for both Kyle Lewis and Josiah Trotter as potential third-round targets, appreciating their contrasting strengths and the versatility Lewis, in particular, could offer to the Dallas defense. Deontae Lawson is considered a lower-tier consolation prize: a high-floor, low-ceiling option best suited to depth and special teams. Dallas, they argue, is in dire need of both linebacker talent and attitude—a void that Lewis (coverage/space playmaker) and Trotter (physical, high-energy run defender) could help to fill on different downs and alignments.
