Marcus Mosher and Landon McCool break down why trading Pickens makes zero sense despite media speculation, explaining how his value fits perfectly with Dak Prescott's offense. The discussion covers Pickens' contract negotiation timeline, the franchise tag option at $26 million, and why his market ceiling is already established.

He is Landon McCool, and on today's show, we are answering your Twitter questions, including who will be the next defensive coordinator in Dallas? What is the current status of demarvi and overshone. But let's first start with this question from Clebo. He wants to know, I would love to have your guys's opinions on why are so many people advocating to trade George Pickens for more draft capital, but the Cowboys have been terrible at drafting for the last four or five years. I believe that's what, that's what's killing the defense. We'll get to that stuff in a little bit, but there has been a lot of talk from national people, from local people that maybe trading George Pickens is a smart idea. Landon, what are your thoughts?
Marcus Mosher
First off, real quick, show note, like, this is the only trade question we're taking because we're gonna do an entire show on trade deadline stuff a little bit later this week. So definitely check it out, you know, and I'm sure you will. So. But this one had to be addressed a little Bit. I mean, I understand the idea that, like, there are still some concerns about if the Cowboys are going to sign Pickens or if they're comfortable signing with Pickens. You know, a lot of the reports are being phrased in a way like, oh, the Cowboys haven't even reached out to Pickens's, you know, representatives yet to start contract extensions, which, I mean, you know, that doesn't necessarily surprise me. And. And honestly, we don't even know that Pickens wants to, like, start negotiations right now.
Landon McCool
But, you know, why that shouldn't surprise us is because when the trade happened, we heard from both sides that they were completely content letting the season play out and reevaluating it in the offseason. I don't think it. Anything should have changed based on what we've seen through eight games.
Marcus Mosher
And honestly, I think this is what you and I actually prescribed for the situation, is that they wait, you know, give him the whole season to see how it plays out, see how that situation plays out, just because, like, they've had an outrageous amount of success with the. At least on the field with Pickens so far. I mean, really off the field, too. And if you're going through expectations, I think that you don't change the course of what the plan is. And so there's that part of it, like the, you know, lack of movement in signing him when, you know, even though the Cowboys and Pickens all decided they didn't want to do that. So there's that. And then there's obviously there been a groundswell of trade talk that clearly is being fed to several beat reporters by somebody. By people inside the Cowboys office for a soft launch, you know, maybe agents trying to get a contract going situation going. Who knows? But. But there clearly is some sort of quiet, you know, not being discussed. You know, it's not just being brought up by chance conversation about Pickens being traded. I just don't. I mean, again, we've lived through the Micah situation, and I. And clearly now I've been burned by not believing the stuff until it actually happens.
Landon McCool
But.
Marcus Mosher
But I still kind of, you know, taking the stance that I feel like it's probably part of a larger negotiation situation or. Or something like that, or. I just can't imagine that anyone is seriously considering trading Pickens. I think, although I understand his value may be at its highest right now. And. And maybe you feel like beyond just the. The. The trade extension thing, you're worried about whether the, you know, other part of Pickens that hasn't reared its ugly Head for the Cowboys if it eventually will. And maybe you want to sell before that happens. But I just think with the way that the situation has gone, the one thing that we can say that has happened is that you've gotten enough production, way more production than you expected out of Pickens, enough that you are 100 interested in keeping him around.
Landon McCool
There are a lot of different angles here, but I want to start with this. I actually disagree that the, the value is higher now because teams that are acquiring him would only get him for eight or nine weeks depending on.
Marcus Mosher
That's fair.
Landon McCool
When you would acquire him, whether it's this week or next week. Right. And teams are just very hesitant to give away high draft picks for guys that they only get a half season from and then, then either have to give a big contract or let them walk. Right.
Marcus Mosher
So I don't think he's, he's at his highest value. But you're right, the, the contract, the part that's actually being traded.
Landon McCool
Yes.
Marcus Mosher
Is probably not. So that's a very good point.
Landon McCool
Right. So I can't see the Cowboys trading him for a, let's say to Buffalo for a third round pick because now you're just getting a lesser third round pick than what you just traded to go out and acquire him. Like you're getting absolutely no value outside of renting him for eight games. Right. I know some people are saying, well, why couldn't you get a first or second round pick? There's teams that are really needy for receiver. That's true. But Pickens is a unique player. It's. He's not, he's been really clean in Dallas, let's just be clear. But like going back to Georgia and going back in Pittsburgh, he's not the cleanest player off the field. So a lot of these teams are going to default to their pre draft evaluation and that's going to knock him down. So having said all that, like you're just not going to get the value. And I honestly think this is the Cowboys just saying, hey, come blow us away with an offer like a first round pick and yeah, we'll consider moving him. That's not the case. The other part of this, Landon, is I don't think there's a rush for the Cowboys to sign him because you do have the franchise tag, which is I think 26 million. And unlike the Dak deal or the Micah deal or the CD Lamb deal, the ceiling is already set. Like all of the top receivers in the league have already signed their deals. Whether that's CD Lamb, Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase, Amon Ross, St. Brown, you, you're only going to be able to go so high. And I think even that next range of receivers like the T. Higgins, the Jameson Williams, that's the range that he's going to be in. It might be give or take a million or 2 million from that, but like it's pretty clear what his market is.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, and it feels like too, the Cowboys fans are rightfully, rightfully, you know, shell shocked with, with what happened with Micah Parsons. But we have to remember that the Cowboys in succession had to negotiate the deals for their quarter. The quarterback who was due, which is always going to be always, ultimately, you know, at top end of the market. And Dak was deserving of it. Dax playing like he's earned it. Right. CD Lamb, a wide receiver, which is obviously another extremely high end position where he's being paid top 3 of the market. And then obviously Michael, the Micah Parsons situation where we're talking about, you know, the most expensive non quarterback, that's what was being negotiated. This is not that deal. But Pickett's is a great player, but like you said, he's very clearly slotted in a spot. So the negotiations are not as broad as they would be in some of those top end market deals. So it makes the negotiation a little bit easier. And, and you know, look, I, I think it's hard. I think the thing that we're not talking about specifically that is about who this player is is how good of a fit he is specifically with the quarterback you have. Right. Like, I mean there's a reason that he was able to kind of come in the way he was and, and perform the way he did is because this is the exact type of wide receiver that Dak has been missing since prime Michael Gallup. And Pickens is better than prime Michael Gallup. So I think that that's the other thing that shouldn't be discounted here is that the Cowboy's been a long time trying to find exactly this type of receiver and there aren't a lot of these body types that do what he does anymore. And you have him on the team currently.
Landon McCool
And on the flip side, teams that would be trying to acquire Pickens or if Pickens is in a free agent market, like we know wide receivers are not scheme agnostic. Right. Like they need to be in the right fit. And I think, I mean we've got a long history of receivers chasing more money elsewhere to land at a worse offense with a lesser quarterback or sometimes even a better quarterback. I mean, there's times where Tom Brady and the Patriots brought in really good receivers, but it just didn't fit their system. I think because Pickens likes Dax so much, he likes playing with CD Lamb. I do think a deal gets done. I think the only thing that's up in the air a little bit is the length of the deal, which is nothing new for Dallas, but I think for both parties it might make sense. Sense to do a two or three year deal, you know, and then let. Because Pickens is so young, let him hit the market at age 27, 28 again when he can really cash in if he could put together multiple good seasons. But I, I just don't. You traded Micah Parsons, so you had cap space that you keep your good players. George Pickens is undoubtedly one of your top seven players, eight players in your team. You shouldn't let him walk.
Marcus Mosher
I agree, like, and I think it's. It's silly to kind of talk about it, but that's. I think we've explained why it's being talked about right now. You need to resign Pickens at the end of this year or at least make sure he's on the team next year. Some. Some form of fashion.
Landon McCool
And the last thing we can have a debate as to if it's the right strategy to pay a quarterback and two wide receivers and a tight end. But right now that's where your talent is, right? Like, you just don't have that many guys on defense that you need to pay. I think the philosophy going forward is we're going to spend all these picks on defense, be young and cheap on that side of the ball. Let's keep the offense stable and good so we can build our team up. That way you don't create stability by letting one of your top players go for a third round pick or letting him walk in free agency next year. That's just not smart.
Marcus Mosher
You have a clear window. Fit him into that. Well, on the offensive side, it's easy to build up on the defense on the defensive side with young players, go do it that way and then flop it on the other end of it with, with a rookie quarterback and start all over.
Landon McCool
Oh, man. Talking about rookie quarterbacks.
Marcus Mosher
That's all right. That's down the road. Down the road, sure.
Landon McCool
Well, we'll get to that later. Maybe later. All right, let's. Let's talk about the Marvin over shown who looks like he could be returning in the next couple weeks. The people want to know should the Cowboys maybe not rush him back considering the way that the season is going right now.
Marcus Mosher
First, first off, like I think we need to, we need to trust the the Cowboys medical staff here, right? They're not going to put over shown out there before he's ready. They they've been pretty good about doing this kind of thing. You know the the times when there's been trouble before is when guys have been away from the facility and and not been working with this group. But when they are here and they've been rehabbing with, with our group and, and our coaches. I mean our, our medical staff, they usually get great insight into how into these injuries. And then when they, if they reoccur, it's either about bad luck, which, you know, obviously that's part of the game, right? Injury luck and, or a situation where the player did not do what they needed to do in the recovery time. I have a hard time believing that Overshone hasn't done every single thing and 20 more than what was asked of him to get into the recovery just based on who he is. And I think that's the other part of this for me is that it's not that I don't share the same fear a little bit. I, but I think it's born out of the idea that the Cowboys are struggling at linebacker. And so the assumption is that everything is going to be put on to over shown when in reality, like mechanically, biomechanically, they're asking him to play a regular season football game, which is something that these, this medical staff is used to having to get players ready for. And then finally, I'll just say if you're still concerned about the fact that, that maybe the Cowboys are rushing him back because they, they need him or whatever, then go to spend 30 seconds or 2 minutes or 5 minutes listening to Overshown himself speak about his recovery and his time frame and you will feel 100% times better that it's not the Cowboys that are, you know, pushing him onto the field too early. It's him dragging the Cowboys medical staff along with him to get onto the field. They're still going to make sure it's safe. I, you know, have, I understand the fear here, but I think it's more just a combination of the fact that this guy's had multiple injuries and the fact that there's a perceived extra amount of physical pressure being put on him because of the, the amount of, of bad play that he has to make up for what he's on the field.
Landon McCool
I mean, football players want to play football. It's, it's kind of that simple. Like you can only protect them so much. I do think the Cowboys need to be wise about how they ease him in because a couple things, he hasn't played football in over a year. It's a new defense. I think you just want to gradually get him up in the same way that they did with Jadavian Clowney.
Marcus Mosher
Right?
Landon McCool
Like Clowney didn't get 55 snaps right away. It took him a good month before he started to look like himself. And now you're getting some pretty good play from Jadavian Cloudy. I, I have to imagine the Cowboys are going to do that for overshot. They're just not going to stick him out there and expect him to handle a usual amount of snaps. The other thing is they've got this Monday night game against Arizona. They've got the buy, they've got the Raider game. But you start looking at this like late November stretch where they're playing a bunch of games in a short amount of time. I do think they need to protect over shown from himself a little bit.
Marcus Mosher
Sure.
Landon McCool
But that's not by holding him out of games. It's maybe just limiting the number of snaps. And honestly, we're already seeing the Cowboys rotate a ton of linebackers, so that's nothing really new from them. I would just expect that to kind of be the norm once he gets back.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I think that's what it looks like. I think if people are perceived at least again, my perception is that he's not going to come back in and play, I hope 75 snaps a game, you know, right away or anything like that. I think it's going to be a situation where he becomes part of the rotation that's already naturally happening. Right. And then as the season goes on, maybe once you get out of that, you know, pre and post Thanksgiving game schedule where you have whatever it is, three games in 12 days or whatever, I think after that you could start looking at increasing his snap percentage as the end of the season gets going and start ramping him up a little bit more, you know, but I, I think they're gonna play it smart. They understand how important he is and, and they understand, I think, how important it is that they have him not only just for the 27th season, I mean 26 season, but, but also like having him for the training camp and for, for you know, mini camps and the entirety of the, of the off season. I think that's really, really important. So they're not going to risk that with this situation right here. They want him on the field because the Cowboys defense needs him, but that they also need him long term. And I think that they'll, they'll ramp him in an appropriate way.
Landon McCool
And I think the same thing can be said for Savon Revelle. The Cowboys third round corner from East Carolina there, they need him, they need another corner that can play on the outside. I think he's going to get rotated in and then maybe the hope is by December you can give him a starter level amount of snaps. The Cowboys have been through this with a lot of injuries, unfortunately, because they've had so many injuries. Like, they are pretty good about ramping these guys up. The guy like the guys that have gotten into trouble are the guys like Trayvon Diggs who, you know, he played basically full starter snaps in week one after doing nothing in training camp, nothing in the preseason. And, you know, there's some wear and tear there. I think they're going to be smart here, especially with two guys that are very young on rookie contracts. I, I think they're going to be smart.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I do, too. And, and I think with Ravel, I mean, he's not on like a shortened timeline. Like, they have actually already been very deliberate with the way that they've rolled him back in, and I would imagine that would continue once he starts getting actual snaps as well. So, yeah, I, I, I, I think that, you know, they've, they've shown that they have a willingness here that, you know, they're not so desperate to throw guys on the field. I think that is one thing that they've handled well on this team.
Landon McCool
All right, let's talk about the next defensive coordinator for the Cowboys, because I think everybody just assumes that Matty Berflus will not be back in 2026. Who are we looking to get? Is it Rex? Ryan? Landon? Is it somebody else? We'll get to that next.

Two shows every single day. One in the morning with Tyler Roland, one in the afternoon with Tony Wiggins. Available wherever you get your podcast. All right, L. This last question comes from Dan. He wants to know what would you guys look for in a defensive coordinator for next season? Again, Apparently Dan is just firing Matty right now. Can't blame him. What are your thoughts here?
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I mean, I certainly can't blame. Damn. That's. That's. What's my first thought is, first of all, we have to just stop and recognize that this is now. Would now be, I think, is it five DCs in five years?
Landon McCool
Well, so it would be Dan Quinn in 2023, Mike Zimmer in 2024. This year with Matt Eber Fluss, it would be four defensive coordinators in four.
Marcus Mosher
Years and four different. Okay, so that's rough, man. You know, and, and. And I think that, like, I think you have to do something to try to keep a certain amount of continuity, at least in. In. In scheme. Right. So you probably would like to find another rush4drop7 guy. Right, that can maybe, you know, that is similar, you know, in, in. In tenor that maybe that maybe just does some more interesting stuff as well. Right. That mixes it up. And I think, you know, if you're looking at where, like where to shop, I would say that you. You start looking at. At head coaches that get fired. I mean, again, it seems to be. It just didn't work with Eber flu maybe necessarily. But I do think it's still a sound. A place to start looking because that's where you're going to get a lot of qualified candidates. But I also think that it's worth looking into, you know, maybe other, you know, other defensive coordinators that you've worked with before that, like Maybe have assistance that you like that you, that maybe you could bring back a little bit of continuity. So I don't know that like specifically Dan Quinn's, you know, hierarchy because I think you're not going to be able to obviously steal their, their defense coordinator. But I think, you know, like something along those lines. If you were able to get somebody that, that at least understands those systems and understands what the Cowboys have been playing with. I mean, it's really unfortunate that the Cowboys, looking back, did the flip flop with, with the fight, you know, with, with Zimmer, you know, in, in 2024, because it was kind of a, a weird misaligning of, of. Of. Of tendencies and of types of defense. It wasn't so drastic, but it was enough that you, you're, you know, concerned about it now that you want some continuity. So I think for me it's like you need somebody who can get you playing competent football quickly. Like this isn't like a time to rebuild. Like you need to find someone who can do it on the fly because you're unfortunately, like it or not, your window is right now. Right? Yeah. And I would also. Last thing I would say is you also probably need to consider getting someone who is willing to work with rookies because if you're going to have all these draft picks and spend them, it's no use like having all that draft capital, spending it on defense and then just putting them into a coach's defense that doesn't, you know, play rookies for some reason. So it's going to need to be a simple enough defense that you're going to be able to adjust rookies and have them play.
Landon McCool
I do think the best way to do this is to find the former head coach who is just destined to be a defensive coordinator for the rest of their career. Like Dennis Allen right now is a perfect example. Like Dennis Allen's never going to be a head coach again, but he's an awesome defensive coordinator. I think someone like Vance Joseph, who the Cowboys just played last week in Denver. Vance Joseph flamed out as a head coach and I think he is, you know, he's going to be a defensive coordinator forever. Wade Phillips got to be that way. Right where. Yeah, Phillips, good head coach, but like all time great defensive coordinator. The Cowboys tried that with Matty Berflus. Clearly it's not working right now. Maybe that's not his fault. Maybe it's the talent. Whatever. It's just not a good fit. I think the Mike Zimmer thing was going to work out. It's just that they had a change of coaching staff at the head at the top and Mike Zimmer's older. It worked out really well with Dan Quinn. Dan Quinn just performed so well that he got another head coaching job. So I do think that's the right way to go about this. Who's that guy? Like, that could potentially be your solution at defensive coordinator. I don't know. I will tell you it's not Rex Ryan, who I saw floating around on Twitter on Tuesday. Rex Ryan has not been a headcount or has not been a defensive coach in the league since 2016. And his defense were. Were very, very poor 10 years ago. So I wouldn't be opposed. Landed to them going with somebody younger who has maybe some new ideas that can be exotic and can get this defense playing faster, but who knows?
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. And you know, look, as things kind of change in the, the college football ranks, maybe, maybe you can start looking more at defensive coordinators in those ranks as well. Like just because of the way that, that it's been professionalized in a lot of ways. Maybe, maybe there's more fluidity between the, the college football and pro football. So I think you can look there. But yeah, I agree. I mean, I think the optimal spot is to look at a fired defensive head coach who's looking to get back in as a defensive coordinator. You know, I don't know what Aaron. Aaron Glenn may have saved his job with that win the other day, but. And his defense hasn't been that great either. So it's. It's. Maybe not. But I, you know, again, you look at the guys are at the bottom of the roster and see if they have any defensive history and study that defense and see if it's close to what you've got. You know, maybe it's a name that you should consider at least, you know, you know, see what they, what they're interested in.
Landon McCool
I just think that's the best way to go. Whether that's like the 49ers have Robert Sala, the Vikings have Brian Flores, like Dennis Allen Vance Joseph. That's probably the ideal way to build a coaching staff. We'll see if the Cowboys can get it done in 2026. That is it for today's show. As always, the show reflects trusted football analysis with a clear pulse on Cowboys fans’ anxieties and hopes.
