NFC East rivals retool with bold draft moves—are the Dallas Cowboys facing stiffer competition than ever? Marcus Mosher and Landon McCool dissect the New York Giants’ aggressive strategy, headlined by Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa, and question whether the rebuilt front seven and youthful secondary are enough to fill key roster holes.

the NFC east had a very interesting bunch of drafts. We'll talk about the Cowboys biggest competition next. On today's show, we are taking a look at the three other teams in the NFC east and kind of looking at back at what they did really this off season and more in particularly the draft because I thought all three of these teams had fascinating drafts landed and I want to start with the Giants who had not one but two picks inside the top 10. They go Arvell Reese at pick five, Francis Maui Noah the offensive tackle for Miami at 10 that they got that pick from the Dexter Lawrence trade, Colton Hood, a cornerback that we thought the Cowboys might like at pick 37, Malachi Fields at 74. A couple late day three picks but that's mostly their draft. What did you think?
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, look, they had a ton of ammunition obviously after the Lawrence trade. To get two top 10 picks meant that they were going to get two of the high end players this draft and obviously they did. I think, you know, they added a bit of good luck to have a Reese fall to them.
Landon McCool
Right.
Marcus Mosher
You know, it's, it's interesting though because obviously he goes into that group and, and it's a little bit gonna be a kind of an interesting situation trying to figure out how all those players fit together on that defense. Right. And, and they weren't really able to kind of solve the hole that they created by trading Lawrence at defensive tackle. So I, I thought that they had some kind of, you know, interesting outputs. All things considered, what they gave out and what they brought in with that whole situation, I probably like, I probably think my favorite pick was, was Colton Hood though. Because to me it felt like, you know, obviously Reese is incredible. I mean like we can talk about that. That just seems kind of like an obvious choice. But I think for Colton Hood they had a need. It was very clear. They got really good value for at him at 37, in my opinion. And he's just a guy that I think is going to go in there and be, you know, one of the few kind of competent young corners that they've had in the last few years. They've had. They struggled to draft quality defensive backs over there. So hopefully this kind of maybe not hopefully, but hopefully for cold Hood, this breaks that spell.
Landon McCool
Yeah, just to be clear, we're not going to trash every pick just because they're division rival because we like these players. Like Colton Hood was a guy that we talked about a lot for the Cowboys at 20. I think you and I pushed back a little bit with him being the pick at 20 just because he is pretty young and he's pretty raw and I, I think there can be parts of his game that he's just not the most quick twitch cornerback. But I pick 37.
Marcus Mosher
37.
Landon McCool
That's, that's. That makes way more sense for where he's being drafted. I just never viewed him as a top 20 pick. I think it second round perfectly fine. But you know what this felt like to me? This, this felt very much like a like Dallas Cowboys draft in like 20, 21, 20, 22. You get R. Valries, the pass rusher who is they're hoping is their version of Micah Parsons. You draft a college offensive tackle with the idea that you're moving him into guard. That's like what the Cowboys did with Tyler Smith. And then you take a sec cornerback that you know, very young is all the traits I kind of like. I, I don't want to compare anybody to Kelvin Joseph, but kind of Kelvin Joseph, like coming out of Kentucky, it feels like a Cowboys drafted. Honestly, it feels like a Cowboys team a little bit because you go look at the depth chart right now at defensive tackle and I remember the days of like okay, can we piece together DJ reader Roy Robertson, Harris Leaky Phot2 to be our defensive tackles and just get by with a bunch of Ed Crusher. We'll see.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I mean we couldn't. So I'll be interested to see if they can, you know, so I mean I, I think it's a serious, serious issue. And, and just to kind of go back to Francis Malo real quick, you know, I, I just did not like that pick. You know, especially.
Landon McCool
You're just not a Maui Noah fan.
Marcus Mosher
I mean, I'm not a Maui Noah fan. And on top of that to, to draft him and then immediately announce that you're moving him to guard, then it's like, then why didn't you take Caleb Downs?
Landon McCool
Like, well, just to be clear, you've been, even when we talked about Maui Noah as a potential option for the Cowboys at 12, you know, whether he would just be like the best player available, you just didn't agree that he would be the best talent available. You've never been a Maui Noah fan.
Marcus Mosher
No. And so I was happy that when the Giants took him with the 10th pick, I thought it was a mistake, to be honest. And again, I don't think he's going to be a bad player. I just think he's not worth what they're paid, what they're doing, you know, to get him. And, and ultimately if the trade is for, you know, Lawrence for Maui Noah, I mean, I, I, who do you think is going to win a rep between those two next year? Like, I think Lawrence will crush him, but so I, I don't know. Like I, I just, I feel like I, I wasn't a big fan of the offensive lineman at the top of this draft. I felt like if you're gonna go get one, go get one with, with the kind of upside at a position of value, I think Fano is a much better player. And at that point after that then like don't reach for a guy that you are immediately putting in guardianship.
Landon McCool
Yeah. Now I honestly, I think the Giants were planning on taking Arvell Reese at 5 and then a pass catcher at 10. But once Carnell Tate went at 4, didn't even give the, the Giants the option to take him then. And then Jordan Tyson went at was it eight to the Saints that kind of got wiped off the board. And that's what I, I don't like about this class. I, I really like Arvel Reese. I like Maui no more than you. I think you and I both like the hood pick. I, I just look at this Giants team. You have a really young quarterback, you want to have playmakers around him. You've got Malik Neighbors coming back from a multi ligament knee injury and the list of receivers on the roster right now, it's like, it's just a bad collection of speed Guys, Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin, Jalen Hyatt. Mooney ranked 122nd of all receivers last year. Calvin Austin 115, Isaiah Hodgins 116. Darius Slayton is 101. Like, it's just a bunch of not very good guys. And then the Giants trade up for Malachi Fields. They give up. I think it was pick 101, 115 and a future fourth round pick to get Fields, who I think is like a fine number three or number four receiver, but he just doesn't really move the needle that much.
Marcus Mosher
Well, see, that's the thing, right, is that Malachi Fields is exactly like you just said it, right? Malachi Fields is exactly the kind of receiver that they need, but they needed a better version of it.
Landon McCool
They needed actually good player. Yes.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. And like you just listed it off. Like they have all these guys that can run really fast and maybe get. Maybe still get open, but probably aren't going to catch it even if they do. And you've got a quarterback who, you know, let's face it, accuracy isn't exactly his strong suit. So you need somebody with a better catch radius. Malik Neighbors will work for sure, but he's obviously coming off of a major injury like we talked about. He needs help right now. They don't really have a solution there for, for, you know, what happens if Malik Neighbors isn't beating you with double coverage every single time. And they've got a bunch of guys that can kind of function as interesting wide receiver threes, but certainly not someone who is going to be able to take take reins of the offense when Neighbors isn't quite ready to. To do so.
Landon McCool
I think overall it was a good draft for the Giants. I mean, again, depending on what you think of Maui, know you and I both loved our Arvell Reese. It's a little weird how he's going to fit in with Brian Burns and Abdul Carter who you drafted last year. But if the idea is that he's going to play off ball in on the line and you're going to move him around a little bit, but honestly, that's that. That's what we were hoping the Cowboys would do with A.R. reese anyway. So that's probably how you're going to get the most value.
Marcus Mosher
I mean, have you seen the latest pictures of Abdul Carter? Maybe they're playing him at safety this year.
Landon McCool
He looks skinny. All right, let's talk about the Eagles draft because this is one that I don't understand. I get what the Giants are trying to do. They were trying to beef up their their front seven. I totally get it. I'm not sure about the Eagles. We'll get to theirs next. Just tap the link in the show notes or go to locked on cowboys.supercast.com all right Lana, let's talk about the Eagles draft. Because the Eagles were the defending NFC east champions last year. A very interesting draft. First of all, they trade up with the Cowboys at pick 20 to draft Makai Lemon. They draft Eli Stowers, the tight end kind of from Vanderbilt. They draft Markel Bell, the massive offensive tackle From Miami, pick 68. They give away two third round picks for Jonathan Gard, the Vikings pass rusher, and give him 25 million a year. What did you think of the Eagles draft?
Marcus Mosher
I thought the seventh round was my favorite part of it. Like I I Don't. Sometimes I feel like this is not just. Just about this draft. This is about a number of things. Sometimes I feel like parts of the Eagles organization are trolling other parts of the Eagles organization. Like, it's. It's. And it felt like, you know, Jalen Hurts is your quarterback, right? And you just drafted two guys who operate in the middle of the field, basically, and. And Jalen Hurts, like, you know, despite some widely misinterpreted stats that were circling on Twitter earlier, this Dalen Hurts, you know, is. Is. He may be good the four times that he throws over the middle of the field, but he only throws over the middle of field, like, four times. So it's like, I feel like this is a. And I think I have seen other people say it too. It feels like this is a. A shot across the bow by the front office that, hey, we're bringing in, like, players that run routes in the middle of field. Buddy, you better get on board with throwing in the middle of the field. But the fact that they did this, like, I, you know, like, it's. It's just kind of shocking because it's. Almost feels like it's planning for post. Jalen Hurts, you know, like, and it. It's just such a weird mismatch of using your first two picks and trading up, no less, for one of them to go get players that don't necessarily align with the skill set of your quarterback. It's like, it's like, I need. I need some better explanation of what's going on here.
Landon McCool
So I have a hard time with Strap because I really like the players that they drafted. Like, I. I'm a massive Makai Lemon fan. Like, I. I wanted to see Makai Lemon go to a spot where he could be like the Aman Ra St Brown and get a million targets and be a high volume, high efficiency slot receiver. That's. That hasn't been Philadelphia under Jalen Hurts and under Nick Sirianni. They are a low volume passing attack. It's been high efficiency, but they just don't throw the ball a bunch because they want to be balanced. And that's where I think Makai Lemon is kind of a. A weird fit in Eli Stars. He does the exact same thing as Makai Lemon. Like, they play the exact same role. Now I understand, like, maybe you want to get a guy that can stretch the seam a little bit. You want to have somebody that can develop behind Dallas Goddard. Totally. Okay. And then even their next pick would go with Markel Bell. Like, I understand the appeal of Markel Bell. He's 69 and he's £350 and the tape is pretty good. But I thought that was more of like a fourth or fifth round pick. And you, you take that guy when you have Jeff Stoutland as.
Marcus Mosher
That's exactly. That's exactly it is that I love that pick. If Jeff Stoutland's your coach, guys, have you figured out that Jeff Stoutland is actually not your coach anymore? Like, like, that's. I did not understand that pick without Jeff Stoutland.
Landon McCool
To me, all three of these picks feel like picks that were made for. For either the next quarterback or the next head coach. And that's what's so weird about it to me is I just, I don't see how Makai Lemon and Jalen Hurts are going to fit particularly well. And again, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they're going to hit it off famously and this is going to be the key to unlocking Jalen Hurts. It's just. What I host a Dynasty football podcast. Michael Fabiano and I were talking about how much we hate this fit for Makai Lemon. It just feels wonky is the best way to put it.
Marcus Mosher
I, I think, you know, there's been a lot of talk this week about the, the move that the Eagles made to kind of snake this out from underneath the Steelers. But to the Steelers credit, man, like, how would they have seen this coming? Like, it's such a wonky fit and such, you know what I'm saying? Like, Jordan Tyson was already off the board at this point, right? So like, like the fact that they would come up for, for Lemon, like, for the. It would be the Eagles. Like, I wouldn't have seen that coming. And so I think there's something to that idea. Right? Like, I mean, there's something to the fact that it feels like such a natural mismatch that again, I feel like one part of the, of the Eagles front office is trolling the. The coaching or the players. It's, it's. It's just the weirdest thing, man.
Landon McCool
I know. Because generally the Eagles like to use those picks, unlike trenches. Right. They opted not to draft a pass rusher and they traded for Garnard. Again. I, I understand why they went out and got. Gave. Got Garnard two third round picks is not that big of a deal. The more important thing is they gave him a new contract.
Marcus Mosher
I genuinely like that too. Just to throw that out there. Like, I, I was. I think that that was a smart move. I'm on board with that aspect.
Landon McCool
Well, and they, they honestly, they kind of had to after losing Jalen Phillips in free agency. Their edge rushers going into the draft were Nolan Smith, who played 400 snaps last year, Jlix Hunt, Arnold Ebiketti, and Joe Tryon Shanka. Like, that was it. Like those were the only guys that they had. Now Grinard gives them a viable edge rusher. Now he's a little bit older. He'll turn 29 later this month, but at least now they have a edge rush core. That makes sense.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. And, you know, I mean, it's still like, it still doesn't feel like an improvement necessarily from where they were.
Landon McCool
No. But it's not a massive drop off either.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. So, you know, that's, you know, when we look at the Eagles and we'll talk about, you know, previews at some point later, but that's where it feels like The Eagles got like 5% worse across the board at different areas, you know, and, and, and it's because of this. It's just like they lost a good player. They did a couple of weird things in, in, in the first and second round, and now suddenly you're kind of, you know, behind the eight ball a little bit and some of your positions are actual downgrades from year to year.
Landon McCool
A weird Eagles off season. Also weird with the Jalen Hurt stuff, the Nick Sirianni stuff, the big Dom extension.
Marcus Mosher
AJ Brown's still on this team. Right.
Landon McCool
And that's the other part of it is I wonder what this offense is going to look like without A.J. brown. Who's that Hammer as the ax? I think Devonte Smith is amazing. I think he's going to be better in a bigger role. But when you had two outside guys like that that could stretch the field and threaten teams, it was hard to defend. And what they did instead was they traded a couple picks for Don Tavian Wicks gave him a contract extension. They signed Marquis Hollywood Brown, they brought in Elijah Moore. It's kind of like the Giants. It's like, man, a bunch of former guys that we liked in the draft, like five years ago that none of them have panned out.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. And again, like, I love Devonta Smith, like, and I think he's going to be, I think he can function as a number one wide receiver. That's not in doubt. But it's, you know, you're loading this team up with a bunch of other receivers that are kind of just like him or at least win in very similar ways. And I don't know that, like, you aren't gonna need another kind of A.J. brown, you know, a big body receiver. What.
Landon McCool
Who's. Who's the. The guy that's 215 pounds, that's going to be able to beat somebody across their face and out physical a guy for a ball.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. And again, like, who's the guy that's winning consistently, you know, on the outside when. When Jalen Hurts is throwing moon balls? I think Smith could do some of that.
Landon McCool
I think Smith outside of that, I don't know.
Marcus Mosher
But. Yeah, like, but even then, like, I don't know that he can consistently do it against the team's best cornerbacks and. And double coverage consistently in the way that A.J. brown was facing in that situation. So, you know, it's just, again, it's. It's kind of death by a thousand cuts. And it doesn't feel like they did a lot to answer that solution, but by getting two slot players that are. That are, you know, working in the area of the field that Jalen Hurts operates the. The least in.
Landon McCool
All right, so let's talk about the team that I think had the worst draft and that is the Washington Commanders. We'll get to them next. This episode is brought to you by Game Time. Welcome back to the Loton Cowboys podcast. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen every single day. Landon, let's talk about the Washington Commander's draft because they got a really good player that we liked in Sunny Styles. Again, I got a really good linebacker prospect.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah.
Landon McCool
But I hated their draft. And the reason why is you have a young quarterback who's going into year three of his deal. Their season last year got tanked because they had no weapons. They were relying on Terry McLaurin coming off a holdout in an old Debo Samuel to. To be their primary receivers, and it didn't work. McLaurin got banged up. Debo Samuel was really old. And what did they do this off season? Nothing. They. They haven't done anything at wide receiver. They lost Evo Samuel right now, Noah Brown and yes, that Noah Brown and Luke McCaffrey are your other two starting receivers. With Ben Senate at tight end. Your top running back is Jacori Crosky Merritt. You drafted Sonny Styles. Again, really good player. They've drafted one receiver, Antonio Williams, a. Okay, slot receiver from Clemson. I mean, he's fine, but he's not going to scare you. And then the rest of the draft, Joshua Joseph at pick 147, K Tron Allen, who is a incredibly slow running back at 187. Matt Glubbin center for Michigan State at 209. And then Athens Kalikimanis, a quarterback from Rutgers at 223. I hate this draft. Hate it.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, it's rough, man. Like, honestly, outside of Styles, the guy that I like the most, or at least where they got him, was Josh Joseph at the Tennessee Edge. Player. I think he's got the kind of body and athleticism that maybe Quinn could develop something here. But let me just even take a step back, if I could, is Adam Peters. Right? Who's the. The gm? I. I really don't think Adam Peters knows what he's doing. Like, I honestly, like, I. I know that he comes from San Francisco and of accolades and all that, but it was very clear what they needed to do after the 2024 season. 2020? Yeah, four season that they needed to load up this team while they had a. They just made the. The The NFC Championship game with a rookie quarterback or. Yeah, yeah, with a rookie quarterback. It's very clear. What you need to do is load this baby up while you've got a guy who was performing at an MVP level on a rookie deal who by the way also probably isn't built for long term success in the, in the NFL. So even more of a reason to like front load this thing and go for it baby. And what did they do? They sat on their hands, they got older, not younger and they didn't solve the the pro. They cut corners to solve problems. Problems at positions they need to solve. Fast forward a year later, they have a terrible season, quarterback gets hurt, things go fall apart. What did they do this offseason? They did basically the same thing, man. They didn't do anything. Their big swing was the seventh overall pick in Sunny Styles who again we absolutely love. But like your big swing for the off season was adding an off ball linebacker. Like how, how are you helping your quarterback who again is often injured and kind of constantly trying to take it all on himself. How are you helping that quarterback get to the next level outside of just hoping that old ass Terry McLaurin is going to come back and save you? Like I really don't understand what the kind of it's not even just the draft. Like what are they doing? What are they doing with this kid?
Landon McCool
I'm looking right now at Pro Football Focus on the roster. As of right now they have 16 defenders who are going to be 28 or older by week one. That is an old, old defense. And this is what we talked about last year. Like they were old and slow, like really old and slow in a defense
Marcus Mosher
that they had to be fast.
Landon McCool
So they went out and they spent a ton of money on Adafe Away and Caleb on Chase on because they had no edge rushers and those are their top two edge rushers going into the year. And I, I both those guys are fine as complementary players. I don't think either of those guys can be a focal point of your edge room. And I think the Cowboys have a similar issue with like Roshan, Gary and Donovan as a raku. The difference is they've got Quinn and Williams up front who can win at 20% right? They do not. Ron Payne has gotten worse every single year. Jayvon Kinlaw has been atrocious, one of the worst contracts in the league. He's also going to be 30 I believe this year. It's just a really old defense that you're that doesn't have a lot of playmakers. They're relying on Sonny Styles to be that guy. And what do we say about styles? Like, if there's one concern about Styles, like, I think he's going to be a guy that makes a lot of tackles. He's not really like a playmaking style of linebacker. That doesn't mean he's not worth the seventh pick in the draft. But he's not really the guy that's going to be, you know, getting you four or five interceptions or getting you four or five sacks. It's just not that, just, that's just not his role.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, again, like, and even if he was that guy, like, I don't think it's enough. Like, again, like, you've, you've got a situation where you should be giving this young quarterback all the opportunities he could. And look, you know, don't sign a Duff aoa. Go get a wide receiver. You know what I'm saying? Like the, I understand that the defense is bad and it had to be better, but it shouldn't have gotten that. To that, that place in the first place. Right? I agree. You had all these resources. You've got a rookie on a, on a, on a cheap deal. I understand he was the, what, number two overall pick or whatever. He's still cheap, you know, so go out and use those, those resources. I just don't understand why they're nibbling around the edges. Like all the things that they accused Jerry Jones and Steven Jones of being. These guys have done worse. Like, they have it. They have an opportunity. They made it to the NFC championship and then they went cheap two years in a row.
Landon McCool
And old, that's the other thing. And old, that's. That's the worst part. I, I think of the, the teams we talked about today. Washington is the team that I would be the least concerned about. If you're a Cowboy fan, Eagle fan, or a Giants fan, we'll see. Maybe those words come back to bite me, but I do not like their off season at all. That is it for today's show.
