Foreign don't discount the Dallas Cowboys drafting Jeremiah Love. We'll tell you why next. You are Locked on Cowboys, your daily Dallas Cowboys podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast network. Your team every day. Welcome back. I am your host, Marcus Mosher. He is Lana McCool and today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel. FanDuel is giving you a way to turn that energy into an even bigger potential win with a college basketball parlay. Profit boost. Head over to FanDuel.com to get started. On today's show, we are discussing Jeremiah Love, the Notre Dame running back, how he would fit with the Cowboys, how they could potentially build a defense even after using the number 12 pick on a running back. We'll get to all that in a little bit. But Lane and I, you're hearing a bunch of stuff this week that, hey, there's no way Jeremiah Love gets out of the top six or seven picks. He's going to go really high. He's going to go to the Titans at the Giants. And listen, I get that. But at the same time, he's a running back. And with the Browns not drafting a running back, the Chiefs, Seattle, the Chiefs and Saints and the Bengals and the Dolphins all not drafting a running back, you don't have to squint very hard to see a scenario where he could fall in this draft.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, look, we talk about positional value all the time, and I think no matter who you are, there are very few evaluators that don't put Love in the top two players of this entire draft.
Landon McCool
And he's number one of the consensus board right now.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, and honestly, he's been that way for A long time and I think, you know, but the positional value is a thing. You know, I think running back value has started to turn around a little bit, but I still think it's, it's, it's a heady proposition to take a running back in the top 10.
Landon McCool
And Landon, there's only three teams inside the top 10 that could feasibly take one again as the Titans at four who need a lot, the Giants at five who need a lot, and then the Commanders at seven, but they've just paid a bunch of running backs. They also have edge rusher needs. Like, I could see a scenario where it's like Arvell Reese goes forward to the Titans, the Giants draft Sonny Styles at 6 and then the Commanders draft David Bailey at 7, and all of a sudden Jeremiah Love is available at pick number 12.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah, I mean it's, it's happened in a lot of, you know, scenarios where you just, you, you play these out and, and, and it rolls all the way down. So. Yeah, I, I certainly think that the odds, like if we were to, you know, take bets on the, one of the few blue chip players that were to roll down to Cowboys at 12, I would think Love would be the most likely. Right. Like, I think it's just because of that positional value. Maybe Sunny Styles is, is similar.
Landon McCool
But, but let's say, let's say this happens, right? He's available at 12 and the Cowboys pick him. How does it work? What does it look like? Because you just gave Javonte Williams quite a bit of money. Maybe not as much money as we thought originally, but you're paying him $8 million a year. How do you incorporate, incorporate Jeremiah Love on an offense that already has CD Lamb, George Pickens and Jake Fergus?
Marcus Mosher
Well, I think, you know, you, first of all, you're probably running a lot of more 12 personnel now. Second of all, I think you're, you're probably just going to appropriately portion off the running game and, and you know, look, lean into it a little bit more. I think you're going to be year two Clayton Adams offense. I think that there's an expectation that the offensive line should take another step this year. We talked about that needing to be the case this year. And I think suddenly you step into a situation where you go from a pretty good run game that, that you feel like it was going to improve in the next year to maybe the best running attack in football and having that kind of counterbalance by obviously what's happening with the, with the passing attack, which was what actually launched you into being one of the top offenses in all of football? And now you're talking about a real, real field tilter on offense. Like not just potentially the best offense in football, but like a very good historically offense that, that seems within reach if you have that kind of assemblage of players and talent on that side of the ball. So I think what it would mean is that it would kick your butt into high gear because suddenly you're in a Super bowl window, in a real super bowl window. And I think you should start having conversations about how do you solve the rest of your defense immediately with future picks potentially.
Landon McCool
Just to be clear, I'm not being held hostage. I'm not having this. I was going to say we are, we're talking about like hypothetical. Right. I do think this would be an awesome fit for Jeremiah Love because what's, what's the one thing that young running backs generally struggle with? It's pass protection. Right? You've got one of the best pass blocking running backs on the league, so you wouldn't have to ask him to do that kind of stuff early on. And honestly, you wouldn't have to ask him to do a lot of the short yard stuff anyways. That's what Javante Williams would be able to handle. Jeremiah Love would come into a situation where he would be asked to be the Jameer Gibbs, right? The guy that's running the screens, it's running the off tackle stuff, the one, the guy that could create big plays. And you're probably giving him 14 to 16 touches a game, keeping him fresh as the season goes. And I think it just makes your offense even more balanced. The problem is, is you're taking away your top asset that you can use on defense and that presents a whole bunch of other problems.
Marcus Mosher
Yeah. Real quick, before we get into that, I just want everyone to imagine you're sending CD Lamb, you're sending George Pickens down the field and suddenly the linebackers and safety is vacating the underneath and then you just slip a little pass out to Jeremiah Love in the, in the flat with no one around him. I would like to see what those checkdowns look like, please. Yeah, I think it's, you know, that obviously presents the real problem. And I told you when we talked about this pre show, this whole situation, if it really were to go down, would make my heart race. Right. Because it's like now we really have work to do. Right. Like, I think you've got a thing and I think having Love, you know, helps with the defense in some ways because of the ball control element of it. But you still have a ton of work to do now and I think you've started. I think you should start getting into desperation mode to kind of start figuring out how to solve those problems.
Landon McCool
Yeah, let's talk about how to solve that defense. It's a major problem and the reason why you shouldn't draft the Running back at 12 get this episode is brought to you by FanDuel. You've got one more first round pick. They didn't do a bunch in free agency. How do you fix the defense after spending your most valuable resource on a position like running back?
Marcus Mosher
The, the, the disdain you have in your voice is amazing.
Landon McCool
But Jeremiah loves a great player. By the way, just to be clear, I like him significantly more than Ashton Genti last year. So it, it's, it's really, it's nothing.
Marcus Mosher
Before we get letters, I honestly will vouch for, for Marcus, who has been surprisingly on board with talking about this in general and doing it. Yeah, look, I think desperation is the word I used before winter break. I think that's the word I'm going to continue to use. I think you recognize. Okay, man. We've really got something on offense now. We have to find a way to make it right on defense and we got to find a way to be able to support what could now be putting us into real super bowl contention. With this, with this roster, I think you have to consider going and trading your 2027 first round pick. It's a valuable commodity. 2027 is a class that is, you know, being hyped up to legendary proportions right now with the wider, with the quarterbacks that are coming out and, you know, potentially a guy like J.J. smith, the Collins kid from, from University of Texas. There's several guys who you feel like could be coming out and being kind of top end talent or Simmons, maybe. I'm sorry, Simmons, I think it is from Texas. You're coming out and being, you know, top end, blue chip players. I think you could probably get better value trading that pick than you normally would next year's first. So I think that's probably what you do is you go find a team that's hunting quarterbacks next year and you offer them some more ammunition to go get the guy that they want. And in exchange you get another pick in the top 100 area.
Landon McCool
Or, or you, you score a player. Oh yeah, you spend pick 20 on, let's say a cornerback like Avion terrell at pick 92. Maybe you trade, you take your third and fourth rounders together, package up and go get a linebacker and you use that 2027 pick to go get you an edge rusher or go get you something else just to try to bring up the floor of the defense. Because your window is right now, it is the 2026 season and potentially the 2027 season. You can't wait to maybe draft a guy in 2027 that might help you by the end of that year. You need to go out and try to win right now with a quarterback who's 33 years old, with a receiver like George Pickens on a franchise tag, with a healthy CD Lamb. It can be done. The only issue is the Cowboys have never shown the, the willingness to go all in like this. And drafting a running back at 12 at this point would signal that, hey, you have to go all in. There's no middling it now anymore.
Marcus Mosher
Well, it'd be a motivating factor, right, because you kind of have a countdown now. And, and look, maybe what you do is if Maybe Arizona takes ARVL Reese at 3 somehow and you go back to Arizona and say, hey, what if we give you some more ammunition in 2027 and you give us sweat, right? Just like there's still ways to solve these problems. You just have to have the willingness and the motivation to do it. And I think the honest, obvious upside here is that if you went and got a guy like Jeremiah Love, maybe that motivates your front office to act out of the ordinary because they realize they really have something on offense.

This episode explores a provocative draft scenario: If the Dallas Cowboys select Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with the No. 12 overall pick, could they still construct a competitive defense and maintain their Super Bowl aspirations? Hosts Marcus Mosher and Landon McCool debate the logic, risks, offensive upside, and defensive challenges of using a premium pick on a running back amidst the Cowboys' current roster structure and needs.
Consensus Top Talent, Low Positional Value (01:55–02:57)
Draft Scenario Pathways (02:57–03:54)
Aggressive Front Office Moves (11:05–13:44)
Motivation for Action (13:44–14:21)
The discussion has an energetic and slightly anxious tone, reflecting the true risk/reward tension of spending a top draft asset on a luxury position. Marcus is pragmatic but optimistic about offensive upside, while Landon brings focus to the practical roster-building challenges. Both ultimately agree: The only way this gamble works is if the Cowboys front office responds aggressively and decisively to shore up a vulnerable defense, embracing a Super Bowl-or-bust mentality rarely seen in recent Cowboys history.
