The Dallas Cowboys are two and a half point favorites over the chargers in week 16. That's strange. We'll tell you why that line maybe doesn't make sense next. Joining me today, as always, is Dallas Cowboys expert Landon McCool. And on today's show we are discussing this Cowboys Chargers matchup on Sunday afternoon. The Cowboys are two and a half point favorites. Landon against a a team that like has a chance to be the number one seed in the afc. I don't understand it.
A
I don't. Yeah, the math doesn't quite math there. It feels like it's a. This is a team in the Cowboys that obviously is on the back side of this season is. Is kind of, you know, defeated a little in a lot of ways. I understand that, you know, the, the, some of the mechanics behind how betting lines work. But, but even then, like I, I feel like this is a. This is. This is an easy line that I would probably bet against the Cowboys. I just, you know, it's. It. We're gonna talk about it, but it's just, it's funny to me, like, considering where these two teams are in their season and where they're headed towards the end of the season, that the Cowboys be favorites.
B
And I think some of it, I wonder is because the Chargers have some really hard games coming up and this almost would feel like a letdown game for the Chargers. It's also a noon central time kickoff and the Chargers just, just don't play in very many of these games. We should also mention they're incredibly banged up on the offensive line. Justin Herbert's dealing with some injuries, so I get it. I, I also we talked to David Dr. Meyer from Lock on Chargers and he was saying this is by far the best offense that they've played all season long. And maybe it's just one of those things that this is a really rough spot for the Chargers. But having said that, the Cowboys aren't tanking and I do want them to win this game. I want them to play really well against a good AFC opponent. But this feels very much like a, we're starting to see some of the soft tanking elements. Like we'll talk about the Ron Bland in a little bit. He's not gonna play in this game. Tyler Guyton's not going to be rushed back. CD Lamb has missed a couple days of practice. I think we all kind of know what's going on here.
A
Yeah, and, and look, I mean obviously there's, you know, look who you're talking to. I'm the king of loving context. I think there's a lot of context in the particulars of this game for sure. But I, I, and I, and I'm actually interested in knowing because I don't know, like, do you know how much the line has moved maybe let's say in the last 12 hours because it.
B
Hasn'T moved at all.
A
So the Duron Bland news like must not have, must have been baked into this or at least, you know, they must have had expectation.
B
But I, I also some bad news is that even guys like Daron Bland, whether they're in or out of a.
A
Lineup, they don't may not affect it that much. You know, the truth, the truth of the matter is, is that like, you know, with, with the Chargers, it's like you look at some of the numbers on, on where they are at defense and I think that you're right. A lot of people will say the Chargers, you know, who have they played, how they had a tough schedule, how proven are they? But I think that the problem with that argument is that the Cowboys are pretty well proven and we know that they're a bad pass defense, so I do imagine that, you know, and look, we'll get into it all, but. But that's where I feel like the line may be a little bit off is. I feel like we kind of know exactly what kind of Cowboys prefer performance we're going to get on Sunday.
B
So the Cowboys have two more games coming up against Washington and the Giants to finish out the season. And honestly, I just don't think those games are going to tell us anything of note just because I think commanders are tanking and the Giants by that time, week 18, like, who knows who's going to be on the field? This is kind of your last test against the quality team. The Chargers absolutely need to win this game. It's. Even if they're not going to win the division, I mean, they have a chance to win the division depending on what happens with Denver and Jacksonville this week, but they want to be the five seeds. They can play the winner of the AFC North. Yeah, it would be really nice to see the Cowboys come out and play a good game against a quality opponent. So you can feel like, okay, hey, maybe we lost to the Vikings, we hung with the Lions for a little bit. We can be one of these really good teams next year. We're not that far away. But if they go into this game and they get blown out, it's a third straight loss, I think the vibes would really start to sour maybe on this team and Brian Schottenheimer, honestly.
A
Well, I think that that's why this kind of soft tank strategy. And honestly, we shouldn't call it soft tanking. We should have some other kind of strategy, you know, name for it, like it, it works. Because what you end up doing is you protect, you insulate some of your more, you know, injured guys that you don't want to, you know, risk further injury to. And then you give opportunities to guys who are not going to phone it in, who, who need these snaps, who need these opportunities. Guys like Josh Butler and maybe Perry on Winfrey and some of the other guys who give you another one.
B
Ryan Flournoy on offense, because we're talking about the Cowboys offense. Like he's already been a big part of the game plan, but maybe this week you really lean into giving him more snaps and he becomes maybe a focal point of the offense. Or maybe this is a week where Bik Davis gets more touches and you try to figure out if he can be RB2 next year. You're not trying to purposely lose the game, but you're shifting maybe how you're game planning these, you know, these contests a little bit differently.
A
Well, and I'll take it even a step further. I think by playing these guys who need these opportunities, it's insulating yourself from guys tanking, right? Because these guys aren't going to quit. They, they need these opportunities to shine. So I think in moments late in the season when maybe some of your more veteran, not jaded guys, but guys who are there to win championships, to compete for championships, this can kind of help galvanize those guys to kind of keep going because they see these other guys who have worked so hard to get out there and put some positive game tape out, they're not going to quit for those guys. They're going to play for those guys as well. So I, I think it has that kind of added benefit of when you play those types of guys of, you know, galvanizing the team to want to play better for these younger guys that are getting opportunities.
B
Two more things I want to mention the. On the offense, because I get it. Watching this Cowboys team on a noon kickoff against the Chargers, it's, it's not the most exciting thing. Like, it's, it's taken a lot of the juice out of the matchup. However, there's still things that we can watch and be excited to watch and watch. Like for me, one is Nate Thomas. He had a rough game against Minnesota last week. Can he bounce back this week? The Chargers have a really good pass rush. You would like to see some improvement. So maybe he's not your starting left tackle or right tackle next year, but you feel even better about him as a swing tackle if that's the role he ends up being or, you know, end up having next year. The other thing is, I'm not sure they played a team this year that is more physical than the Chargers are. On defense, they played more talented defenses, but the Chargers are very, very physical. And I would like to see the Cowboys kind of match their physicality in this game. I think that's one of my big complaints I had in the Detroit game is they got pushed around a little bit. I would like to see them kind of stand up to a bully a little bit and show that, hey, they can win a game. That's, you know, going to be a little bit of a rock fight. That would be, that would be encouraging long term for this version of the Cowboys.
A
Yeah, some growth. You know, I mean, I think that that's like why you've invested in this young offensive line is to Kind of have that physicality of these guys. And I think you have the right players. You just haven't quite seen it yet. And I think you're right that the, you know, you're going to play guys like O and Mack and, and Tul. I forgot how to say it. Listen, it's Tui.
B
Tuli. Tuli. Tui.
A
Popo T. Tooley, who is just one of my favorite, most underrated defensive ends in the league. And every time we see him and we play him, he's always a game record and can be. So it's just, it's a really great opportunity for a guy like Nate Thomas, who I think he could come out here, have another really good game against the Chargers and get right back on track to where we kind of had a trajectory. He had a couple of bad games that, that doesn't mean you can't bounce back and start playing better football. This, you know, it all starts this week for him. So, yeah, there are guys out here like, look, if you're listening to this podcast, hearing every day or, you know, you're a sicko, you're. You're watching this game. We don't need to sell you this game. You're watching this game either way. But for those of your friends who may be kind of falling asleep at halftime because this game may not be so fun, remind them of all the young players, all the young talent that you still need to kind of see what you have so that you can go into the offseason with a proper evaluation of these players.
B
You're just shifting your focus a little bit. I mean, the goal is still to win games. We're going to be rooting for this Cowboys team to get a win because it's a lot more fun to cover the Cowboys and root for the Cowboys when they win. But you're also paying more attention to the growth and development of these players. And even someone like George Pickens, who's only 24, he's coming off of back to back quiet statistical games. This is a really good Charger secondary. I'd love to see him come back and have an awesome game and kind of put some of those concerns to rest. So those are just a couple of things that we are paying attention to for the Cowboys offense. Let's talk about the defense who will be without one of their best players on Sunday. We'll get to that next. This episode is brought to you by Game time. The World cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994 and with 48 teams for the first time ever. This is a new development he did not practice on Wednesday, did not practice on Thursday. And then we got some word that he is contemplating surgery on that same foot that he injured last year. That's giving him some problems and that's a terrifying sign.
A
Yeah, and, and you know, officially moved to the IR too, I think. And so he's, his season is done for. So. Yeah, yeah, whatever the decision is, you know, it's, it's clearly one that is. Ended Duron's season. And, and you know, look, he, he had a very up and down season. He obviously came into the year dealing with this foot injury and recovering from it and, and was one of the many guys that kind of was rushed back in order just the service of trying to get this defense going early. He, I would say that of the guys that kind of came back, it felt like he was one of the more successful ones at the time. He was able to come back and play quite a bit and, and Eddie, I, I think at times played well. But yeah, obviously there were other times where he didn't play so well and there. And obviously the injury was such that he had to get shut down for the season. So yeah, it's a bummer. I mean the, the, the truth is that you, you get this extra time to give him an opportunity to figure this out and hopefully get healed up before, you know, the off season and hopefully have some kind of off season. So. But yeah, it's just another situation where this foot injury has, you know, taken another player from. For way longer than they expected in another situation where they came back, played on it for a little while and then had to go away and get it fixed again.
B
I, I would like to know and maybe we'll find out like has this been something that he's been dealing with? Yeah, for the last couple weeks and he's been playing through it. Or is this, hey, he suffered the injury or re aggravated the injury against Minnesota and now he needs the second surgery, which is pretty common when you get some of these, you know, mid foot sprains. So not great. This is what happened with DEZ Bryant zapped a lot of Dez's quickness. You're hoping that's not the case for Duron Bland, but if he's been able to play through it and you know, he's played at a pretty decent level for the most part, maybe that gives you some optimism that he's going to be able to return. He's going to have a full off season to, to rehab and get ready. In the meantime, that means more snaps For Savon Revel, for Kaylin Carson. Maybe we see Josh Butler this week. I doubt it means more of Trayvon Diggs, but I've been wrong before. We'll see.
A
Yeah, I mean, I think you and I pretty confidently declared that Trayvon Diggs is not going to be playing anymore for the Dallas Cowboys. This sort of changes the angles on this. But, but honestly, I, I mean, if you're asking me to, to bet right now on whether Trayvon Diggs is playing this Sunday, I would bet against it. And, and I would bet against him again. I would still take that bet that he doesn't play for the Cat the Cowboys again. Unless, you know, you get a couple more injuries and you have no other choice.
B
Really quickly, I was talking with our guy Stretch today, and he asked me the same question, like, do you think there's any chance he could come back in 2026? Trayvon Diggs, and I've been a, a hard. No. But I do wonder if they, if they got a different defensive coordinator that maybe suited Trayvon Diggs skill set better. I mean, I'm not saying this guy because this guy's not going to be their defensive coordinator, but if they brought in someone like Al Harris, who Trayvon loved, maybe that wouldn't make sense. Or maybe you go to a scheme that makes more sense for Digs. I, I don't know. I just. I don't think we can completely rule it out. Partially because if I'm Diggs, I'm on a good contract. Nobody else is going to pay me anything similar, anything close to this amount. Maybe you don't try to burn every bridge before the 2026 season.
A
I don't know.
B
I guess I'm just not completely ruling it out now.
A
I, I guess I, I would like to know where his relationship is with. I mean, look, if the issue is with the coaching staff, is it specifically with the defensive coaching stuff or is.
B
It Refluz or is it with like Jerry Jones and Brian Schottheimer?
A
I mean. Yeah. Or, you know, specifically Schottenheimer to me, because it, it feels like with the Joneses that they're kind of. Who knows, man? It feels like Diggs. You would assume that Diggs is upset with the Joneses, but it. That the language between these two doesn't make that sound like that's the case. It does.
B
It seems like it's more Schottenheimer.
A
Right.
B
Than anything.
A
Well, that's what I was gonna get at. Is that to me, the, the reason. I don't think that he's going to be back is because I do think that Schottenheimer is going to be back next year. And I imagine that if that's the case, that it does feel like it's more than just Eber Flutes, that, that, that Diggs is causing an issue with. And, and look, I mean, with the kind of culture change that Diggs is that Schonheimer is trying to enact in the team, maybe the way that Diggs has acted, I mean, there's been hints that there's been a lot of freelancing at times in, in, in practice and coverage and stuff. Maybe that's the kind of thing that, that specifically Schottenheimer is trying to cut back on and he cannot just tolerate one of his high profile players defying them over and over again while when they ask him to not do that.
B
All right, let's talk about some other guys on defense. Who are you paying attention to this week as we kind of shift into evaluation mode?
A
Well, again, I, I think you look at the guys who, you know, that are young, that you, you're continuing to try to see develop. I think it's, you know, this is an opportunity for a guy like Ezra Rocky to have a big game. This is an offensive line that is very beat up. That, I mean, you look at the offense in the Chargers that, that has a lot of talent on the outside. I mean a decent talent on the outside. You've got a Young wide receiver, McConkey, a not so young wide receiver in Keenan Allen, and Trey Harris who is, you know, a serviceable kind of third wide receiver when you need him.
B
And Quinton Johnson's in there doing Quentin Johnson things, dropping a lot of passes, but makes big plays.
A
Yeah, every once in a while. Right?
B
Yeah.
A
They've got two young, you know, rookie running backs who both are very different from each other. One was a high profile high pick who's kind of starting to make his way back into the offense as he was injured. And then Kimani Vidal is a guy that, you know, that we, I think both liked in, in the draft and, and has had a lot of opportunity and has taken advantage of this opportunity. So there's a lot of skill guys. But the problem with this offense is that it's been a, a not good offensive line that then got hurt and now like they lost the only real talented guys that they had in Slater and, and Joe Alt and now it's, it's, it's kind of a beat up unit. So I, I want to see guys like Ezraku get an opportunity to kind of get in there. I don't know where Jay Toy is, but let's drag some of these other guys off the bench and give them opportunities just to see where they are in their development. But specifically, I think Ezraku up front. I want to see Ravel come out there and get opportunities and it's to see it he can bounce back from having a tough game. Carson as well, who had another kind of tough game. The young guys, I want to see them kind of get more opportunities to get out there and shine a little bit more.
B
I know PFF grades are not the end all be all but I just want to give you the the rankings from Pro Football Focus of their offensive line. Salt Jamari sawyer, their left tackle 50th of 82 he's actually the best one. Trevor Penning who's playing left guard for them 71 of 78 Bradley Boseman 79 of 79 Makai Becton 76 of 76 and then we've got Bobby Hart, old friend alert from the Giants. 77 of 82 this is a matchup where the Cowboys defensive line has to win. You mentioned Perry on Winfrey. You mentioned J. Toyo. We still waiting on the status of Quinn and Williams. I would like to see them dominate this game. The Chargers are going to do everything to get the ball quick. They're going to run the ball, they're going to play action. It would be really encouraging if this unit just took over and dominated again. It's a bad offensive line. Prove it to everybody on Sunday.
A
Yeah, it's, it's weird. It's how it's like our defensive strength on their weakness and their offensive strength on our defensive weakness. Right. Like they've got a lot of guys who can exploit the, the coverage that we've got. The Cowboys, if they want to win on defense, if they want to have success on in defense at all or anything resembling success, they got to win up front. That's the only place where they have the matchup differences to affect the game and they need to provide help for the guys in the back end. The only way they do that is disrupt, but that's been the way that they've had to win these last few weeks and they haven't done it. So they, they have to like actually dominate their, their matchups this week. They got to find a way to get through their their protections and affect a quarterback who has been been effective at running around and making just enough plays to win these games. That's how the Chargers have won these as many games as they have.
B
The Cowboys have been on the wrong end on a bunch of revenge games this year. Micah had a huge game. Rico Dowdle had a huge game. Muhammad for the Lions had three sacks. Little Kenneth Murray. Revenge game here against the Chargers?
A
I don't think so.
B
I hope he doesn't play. I hope it's. It's demarvi and Overshone and Shamar, James and Marisley afoul. Like just let the three young kids go out there and play.
A
Yeah, it's the young, the young linebackers revenge on the old guy, keeping him on the bench.
B
I was doing my best to try to wish it, but. All right, let's give some predictions for this Week 16 matchup between the Cowboys and the Chargers. We'll get to that next. Welcome back to The Lock on Cowboys podcast. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen every single day. Predictions time. It doesn't really hit the same when your team's basically eliminated from contention, but how do you see this game playing out?
A
You know, I, I think I see it a couple different ways. Like, you know, I think what the Cowboy and I, you. You nailed it. Honestly, I think on offense, the Cowboys have to avoid kind of getting bullied up front, right? They need to be able to efficiently, early in the game, efficiently move the football down the field. I think it's going to be tough sledding early to try to throw the football against this defense. They have a really good pass defense. In fact, they may have one of the best pass defenses in all in the. In football. So I, I do think that the Cowboys are going to need, at some point and probably early in the game and probably throughout the game, they are going to need to find some efficiency in the run game to kind of create a little bit in the past game, especially against this defense. And I think that in order to do that, they're going to need to find their toughness because this is a bigger, you know, brutish kind of defensive line that, that, you know, Tooley is. Especially a guy that you think that is. Is a kind of DeMarcus Lawrence in his approach to the run game, a powerful guy who was a disruptor. So, yeah, I think for the Cowboys, they need to find some consistency early to just get their groove back. To be honest. Like, I think that there's. Just to get their confidence back and to put points on the board. And then on the defensive side, they have just got to find a way to get after Herbert. They got to disrupt him. I mean, that's really been the MO for the, for the, the Chargers. It's not the, the. The path of victory here. For the Cowboys, it's not difficult. Like, they're not. They're not. You don't have to uncover anything or, you know, watch a bunch of tape. It's very straightforward that the problem is executing and actually doing it. The Cowboys have the horses to do it, but, but actually getting it done, that's been the problem. And that's why I think you see Vegas giving the Cowboys two points. Because I think we, when you look at the matchups on paper, oh, it really lines up well for the Cowboys. I think they can do this, but the problem is actually getting it done, which hasn't been what the Cowboys have done these last two weeks.
B
I think the Chargers are going to win. I'm going to get my prediction out of the gate. But I do think this is a very interesting game because there is a good chance, if Philadelphia beats Washington on Saturday afternoon, that the Cowboys are eliminated from playoff contention. And one of the reasons why the Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer is they believe that he could create a culture and the players are going to play for him no matter what. Yeah, we'll see if that's the case here on Sunday. Like, they've lost a couple games. It hasn't been because of effort. Like, they played hard. They just lost because they have some significant, you know, problems on defense. But if they come out and they lay an egg and the efforts really bad and they just look disinterested, I don't think that's a great sign for the long term health of this team. But I honestly, I don't expect that. I expect them to come out and play hard. And I. I think it's going to be a very, very close game. That's decided in the last two or three minutes. And honestly, that's what I want to see. I want them to play hard. I want them to be fired up playing like this is a playoff game because that'll tell me a lot about Brian Schottenheimer and what he can get through to this locker room.
A
Yeah. And I think you brought it up earlier like the Cowboys don't really have a lot to gain with these last few games as far as proving anything to anybody. I, I would argue that they have a lot to lose, though. Right. Because you're right. If they came out and they quit on this, I think it would say a lot about this. But I agree with you. I think especially with. For the reasons we talked about earlier, with the younger players getting opportunities to get on the field, I don't think this team is going to quit. I think that it's going to be an issue of actually just being able to execute and get it done. And that's. But that's been the issue. Right. So there's a very high. There's a high chance that the Cowboys come out there and do and do what they need to get it done. And then if they do, I do think the Cowboys are the more talented team right now and they will win this game. But right now it's hard to have faith in that because they haven't done that in the last few weeks.
B

Traditions are a funny thing. They're why we tailgate in the pouring rain, wear full body paint and refuse to wash that lucky jersey. And just like in football, tradition is what inspires us at Tostitos to make our masa the traditional way, starting with whole corn kernels. No artificial flavors, colors or preservatives crafted for that perfect crunch. Tostitos tradition matters. Official chip and dip sponsor of the NFL. The College Football Playoff is everything.

Date: December 19, 2025

This episode dives into the Dallas Cowboys being surprisingly favored by 2.5 points against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16, despite Dallas coming off a rough patch and the Chargers vying for the AFC's top seed. Marcus and Landon break down why Vegas might see things this way, what’s at stake for Dallas—even with playoff hopes all but gone—and what fans should keep their eyes on as the team shifts into an evaluation and development mode down the stretch.

On the Betting Line:
“The math doesn't quite math there. …I feel like this is an easy line I would probably bet against the Cowboys.” — Landon McCool (02:24)
“Chargers absolutely need to win this game...it's a really rough spot for the Chargers. But…the Cowboys aren't tanking and I do want them to win this game…but this feels very much like...we’re starting to see some of the soft tanking elements.” — Marcus Mosher (03:03)
On Young Player Motivation:
“When you play those types of guys…you’re galvanizing the team to want to play better for these younger guys that are getting opportunities.” – Landon (07:13)
On Physicality:
“I would like to see the Cowboys kind of match their physicality in this game…show that, hey, they can win a game that’s, you know, going to be a little bit of a rock fight.” – Marcus (08:51)
On Trayvon Diggs’ Future:
“If I'm Diggs, I'm on a good contract. Nobody else is going to pay me anything similar…maybe you don't try to burn every bridge before the 2026 season.” — Marcus (16:43)
“The reason I don't think that he's going to be back is because…Schottenheimer is going to be back next year…with the kind of culture change that Schottenheimer is trying to enact in the team, maybe the way that Diggs has acted…he cannot just tolerate one of his high profile players defying them over and over again…” — Landon (18:10)
On Defensive Matchups:
“It's our defensive strength on their weakness and their offensive strength on our defensive weakness…They’ve got a lot of guys who can exploit the coverage…The Cowboys, if they want to win on defense…they got to win up front.” — Landon (21:39)
On the Stakes:
“I would argue that they have a lot to lose…if they came out and quit on this, I think it would say a lot about this [team]. …There’s a high chance the Cowboys…do what they need to get it done. …But right now it’s hard to have faith in that.” — Landon (28:07)
The co-host dynamic is natural and conversational, with a mix of honest skepticism, fan-rooted optimism, and thoughtful, nuanced analysis. Marcus leans toward pragmatism and future-planning; Landon offers context and coaching insights. Both maintain a sense of humor and candor as they discuss what’s left to watch for as the Cowboys close out a disappointing, but developmental, campaign.
Bottom Line:
This episode dissects why Vegas is bullish on Dallas, the shift toward player evaluation mode, how the young corps and coaching staff can prove something down the stretch, and which individual storylines are worth tracking through the final weeks. The emphasis: It’s all about effort, culture, and hope for 2026—even if the playoffs are out of reach.
