Dallas Cowboys face critical decisions before Tuesday's NFL trade deadline. Should they pursue elite defensive tackle Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets, or target value options like Tennessee's T'vondre Sweat?

Joining me today as always is Lana McCool. Check him out on Twitter @McCool BCB on today's show, we've got a special show for you guys. Because the Cowboys play on Monday Night Football, we're going to do a trade show. We're going to talk about some players that the Cowboys could target at defensive end, defensive tackle, cornerback, safety. Notice how they're all on defense. Yeah, but before we do that, we should talk about the types of trades that could be available. Number one, Landon, you could go after a rental to help you out this year or you could go after a long term solution. It seems like that's what the Cowboys are interested in here.
Landon
Yeah, I mean, I, I think that they would probably. So the, the interesting kind of rentals are these guys that are on the last years of the rookie deals. Right. Because Those are the guys that you feel like it could be either way. Right. Like, potentially you could trade them, depending on who they are, maybe at a not so heavy cost, and then decide if you want to sign them long term, as you go a little bit and still have the option to potentially, you know, tag them or whatever. But you have to keep in mind that you may want to do that with Pickens as well. So there's a lot of things at play, as usual here. But I, I do think that, you know, that you look at each situation and people always, especially NFL fans, I feel, is like, they forget to look at the contracts, right? They forget to look at the, what the deal that the player is currently on, and, and that's what you're actually trading for. And you need to remember that too, because it. That really determines value. And I think sometimes when we have these conversations on Twitter, people forget that, you know, that the contract that they're currently on, how much money they're making, how much money they're set to make, the guarantees, all of that really matters as much as what, how good of football you're playing right now, because that's going to set the context for what the value of the trade should be.
Marcus Moer
And in case, like, well, we'll get to like, guys like Trey Hendrickson and Mika Fitzpatrick in a little bit, guys that have bigger contracts. But let's go to defensive tackle, because I think that's been the position that a lot of reporters have kind of targeted for Dallas, and it's a fascinating position considering you're paying Oso Digizua a ton of money. Kenny Clark's getting a big contract, Solomon Thomas has been playing really well, and you're getting Perry on Winfrey back here in the next couple weeks. And yet it feels like the Cowboys have been rumored to be in the defensive tackle market.
Landon
Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, they've gotten. They've got a lot of players there, but they haven't gotten what they needed from the position. And I think you going out and, and you look at the, with the market and what's available, and I think that's where the value seems to be, like the, the high end, move the needle type guys that usually aren't available. So. And I, I just feel like, you know, with the Cowboys having spent so long just trying to find defensive tackles, if, if you have a really good one available on a team that's selling that you can go out and get. I don't have a problem with them collecting them. And, and you Know, maybe not re signing Solomon Thomas this year even though he's been pretty good.
Marcus Moer
So let's talk about the biggest name in the market and that is Quinn and Williams of the New York jets. He turns 28 in December. He's got a bigger contract but he's an awesome player. He's actually pro football focuses number one graded run defender. And honestly that's probably not even his best thing. Like historically he's just an awesome player that can get up the field. Now can you pay Oso Digizua in Quinn and Williams that much money? I don't know. But if Quinn Williams is available, that's one of the first guys you have to check in on.
Landon
Yeah, I mean that's the part, that's the only part that's kind of problematic there with Quinn is that he's very clearly like a three technique just like OSA is. But yeah, I mean I think it is a no brainer especially if the reported price we've heard that is it's a second round pick. If that's, if that's the cost, man, I, I think it's, it's, it's worth it for the Cowboys because you'll get the talents you'll need. You'll draw the attention you need throughout the defense. I think it'll help your defensive tackles play better. And, and, and he's obviously a good player versus the past. He's been a little bit up and down this season, but I think that that's not a long term thing. And, and obviously been as you said, one of the best players against the run in all the league. So I think is not old defensive.
Marcus Moer
Tackle like these guys play for a long time. So you're still getting him in his prime. He's, he signed through the 2027 season. I believe he only has $5 million guaranteed left on his contract and I know the price tag is a second round pick but honestly like if it cost the Green Bay first round pick of 2026, I would give it because that, he is a building block of your defense and you know, you, you get a dominant three technique. Yeah. You figure out OSA where to play him. You, you move on from Kenny Clark and you've got a player who knows Aaron White Cotton, the Cowboys current defensive line coach really well. That is a franchise cornerstone that you can build your defense around.
Landon
Yeah. And you know, again I, that's why I would run up pay a second round pick. I do think a first round pick is more appropriate. Right. So don't be don't be surprised if, if that's what the Cowboys would have to end up paying for a player like that.
Marcus Moer
Now that's somebody that's on the higher range of salary if you want to get an impact defensive tackle that doesn't cost quite as much. Devondre Sweat from Texas, who I'm sure a lot of locked on Cowboy fans remember from the 2024 draft, I had a really rough pre draft process. This is a 360 pound maybe defensive tackle. Talked to a couple Titans people, they think because of the change with the head coach and the gm, the GM who drafted him is no longer there. Not necessarily thrilled about some of the attitude stuff which again if you remember the pre draft process, not a surprise. But this is a guy that can absolutely stop the run and that's what Dallas needs.
Landon
Yeah, I mean anyone who watched him at Texas knows that he was a game wrecker for them. And, and you know, the, the, the stuff that we're hearing about as to why they may be getting rid of him is a lot of why he fell. But at the same time he's been very productive for a team. I mean productive in a way that a nose tackle is and frankly deductive as a way as a defensive tackle is. He has as many sacks as Kenny Clark this year so far. So, and, and for a guy that's 360 pound who's playing mostly one technique and being just I think one of the best, another one of the better run defenders in all of NFL. Getting two sacks so far through whatever nine games is pretty good for a defensive tackle.
Marcus Moer
And he's an easy one to fit in your defense. Right. He plays on first and second down. You bring him in on short yardage. You can still play OSA and Kenny Clark on passing downs like that guy is so easy to fit into your current defensive line rotation. The great thing about Sweat is you have this year and two more years of super cheap contracts under the books. So this is not a guy that you have to pay right away. He's not a guy that's really going to cost you any money against the cap. What's the price tag on it? He was a second round, an early second round pick a year ago. I'm not sure it was going to cost the same. I think it's going to be a little bit less than that. But I do think he's somebody that either gets traded before the deadline or, or next offseason once the new GM comes in.
Landon
Now if I'm remembering correctly, we don't have a third round pick next year because of a certain wide receiver that's out there. So the Cowboys may need to get a little bit creative here if they want to go out and get him and not spend a second round pick. So it'll be interesting to see how they play that out if that is a move that they look to make.
Marcus Moer
And we should mention Jeffrey Simmons because that's been another defensive tackle that's been in the, you know, in the rumbling 28 years old. He's been incredibly productive over the last couple years. It's funny, we talked about Quinn and Williams being PFF's highest graded run defender.
Landon
That's right, Jeff.
Marcus Moer
Jeffrey Simmons is the highest graded pass rusher. So what, what do you value more in your defensive tackles? Generally, it's pass rush. He's another undersized guy, but he's strong, he's quick, he's explosive, and again, he's another building block. I think from a personality standpoint and a locker room standpoint, I think Williams maybe fits in better, but I think Simmons is the more dominant player.
Landon
Yeah, and I mean, again, it's the same kind of issue with Williams where, you know, it's, it's, it's never bad to have too much of a good thing, but you, you kind of limit yourself schematically by having undersized defensive tackles that you have to work in. So it may need to be a rotation situation there and they could play on this, on the field, some snaps, but not permanently. You think so you just need to look out for those kind of sticky things that you just have to work out when he gets here.
Marcus Moer
Now, Jeffrey Simmons has a big contract, but like Quinn and Williams, I think it's going to be a first round pick to get him because the guys that can rush the passer that well and who are under the age of 30, they're not cheap to get. So I think I was at Leonard Williams a couple years ago, even, you know, later on in his career, still got a second round pick from Seattle. I've got to imagine a first round pick is what it's going to cost to get Simmons.
Landon
I agree. Yeah, absolutely.
Marcus Moer
Oh, let's talk about some defensive ends because that's another position that the Cowboys have a weakness at, maybe because of a player they trade away back in September. Let's talk about some potential targets for the Cowboys next. This episode is brought to you by Mazda's Moving the Game Forward. For those who believe it's not just about playing the game, it's about redefining it. There are moments that do more than just put points on the board. They move crowds, they move culture, and they keep the game moving forward. And this week's moment that moved the game forward. It's actually, I'm just going to say Tyler, Tyler Booker. I thought he was phenomenal last week against Denver. I know the offense didn't play particularly well, but there were some bone crushing blocks he had in that game and you're starting to see why the Cowboys drafted him in the first round. I think he's going to set a culture and an attitude for Dallas and that they just haven't had at that right guard position, even with Zach Martin. So that's what's keeping the fans moving forward is what this Cowboys offensive line could be down the road. And when you follow what moves you, the unexpected is only the beginning. And just like there's more to every highlight, there's more to a Mazda vehicle. Mazda move and be moved. This episode is brought to you by FanDuel. We'd like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day. Let's talk about some defensive ends. Who is your top name that you would like to see the Cowboys target?
Landon
Well, Max Crosby.
Marcus Moer
Let's be realistic.
Landon
You know, I, I think, I think it's, it's tough because it's, it's kind of similar to the defensive tackle spot where you kind of have a plethora of one body type though, right? Like you've got Fowler and Ezraku and, and, and James Houston, those are the guys that you feel decent about and they're all 240 pound pass rushers, right? So I do feel like you kind of need to go out and get a guy that's, that's a little bit more of a power defensive end. You haven't gotten what, I mean, you haven't gotten what you need out of any of these guys, let's be honest. But you haven't gotten specifically, especially what you need out of Marshawn Neyland, partially because he's been injured and partially because he's just been disappointing. And then certainly Sam Williams, who both of them were kind of supposed to serve on that strong side defensive end and you just haven't gotten very much production at all for them. So I think like, you know, Jay, a guy like Jalen Phillips from Miami, right, who's a little bit like a 255 guy, plus he could still rush the passer, he could still bend. He's had a little bit of injury issues at times, but we loved him coming out of Miami. So I just, I think he's on the last year of his rookie deal, so he is one of these guys that, it's kind of a rental. But maybe you can sign him to another, an extension because you have the money. And maybe that's just part of it because I do think he is still young enough that like, you know, maybe you can get him on a relatively cheap deal because he's kind of had an uneven set of contra years over these last few years due to injury. And, and you could still get the kind of building block piece that you want at the strong side defensive end and help your defense out just by balancing things out and adding some talent in the run game, that guy could still rush the passer as well.
Marcus Moer
We're going to mention a lot of names here really quickly, but do you think there's a chance the Cowboys could trade away away one of their pass rushers? Because I was on a Patriot show the other day and they've been looking for pass rush guys and they were asking about Dante Fowler and honestly I think Fowler is a guy that a lot of these teams like the Patriots, who, you know they're going to be in the playoffs, they might win their division. They're just looking for a guy that can bring a little bit of juice off the edge. Fowler has been a good signing for Dallas, but if the plan is to bring in someone like Jalen Phillips or some of the other names that we Mentioned could you trade away Fowler, get some kind of day three capital and that kind of. You kind of swap those guys out a little bit.
Landon
Yeah, I mean it's certainly possible because like look, I mean the problem is even though the Cowboys don't seemingly have a very good password, they don't. Right. It's not that they don't have enough second tier talented pass rushers I would call them. Right. Like they have Fowler. Ezra Rocku is coming on. I think James Houston as a pass rusher. He's got three sacks. Yeah. He can help you. So I do think that you could say that you have a surplus at that specific body type of defensive end and I do think you could fetch something for one of those guys. Not as Iraqu, but maybe James Houston or Fowler.
Marcus Moer
I just think Fowler's got the biggest track record. Right. He's been around and honestly I think he's played really well. I think according to Pro Football focus at number 20 ranked edge this year. I think there would be a team out there with his contract that would love to add him for a day three pick. I want to give you another name and actually I forgot to tell you about this day pre show, so forgive me. Nick Herbig from the Pittsburgh Steelers is the guy that John owning and I have been fans of for a long time. He's another.
Landon
You're a big Steeler guy, so I know that.
Marcus Moer
No, but thank you. Another small defensive end. You're gonna have to live with that. Six foot two, 240 pounds. He's got 31 and a half inch arms. But I believe he leads the NFL and pass rush win rate. I mean he is phenomenal coming off the edge. He is. He's Pittsburgh's best pass rusher by a mile right now. Now he's going into. He's in year three. He was a fourth round pick. So you're going to have him for this year and next year before he needs a new deal and he's going to get a monster one. It would probably cost a second or third round pick to go get him, but that is a guy that can help your past rush right away.
Landon
Yeah, I mean, and, and maybe, you know, it doesn't sound like it sounds like Pittsburgh has started using him less. Am I. Am I wrong about that?
Marcus Moer
Well, it's because the run defense has gotten a lot worse so they're having to play T.J. watt and Alex Highsmith a lot more and it's just limiting the number of times Herb can get on the field.
Landon
So I'M wondering if you couldn't do like a swap of players to like, help the. Maybe help them and then lower the price a little bit and. Because you are gonna have to pay her big. Like, you know, if you don't.
Marcus Moer
Not.
Landon
Not this year maybe, but certainly next year. Next year. So I do think that it's possible to kind of get the price lowered. But yeah, I mean, look, I'm also a big fan of Nick. Her big. I especially loved him coming out. You know, again, we respect the undersized, armed kings pass rush kings there are. We don't. We don't discriminate.
Marcus Moer
We don't discriminate. Nope.
Lana McCool
We under.
Landon
We understand that pass rush length is an important trait, but it is not a eliminating trade. And that is the issue here. So anyways, yes, I, I certainly think you could do the same thing, but you're going to have the same issue as you do with Quinn and Williams and a lot of these other guys. Is that similar in body type to what you have, which is fine. You're just gonna have to deal with that surplus however you need to deal with it.
Marcus Moer
Another name I wanted to mention is Raiders edge rusher Tyree Wilson. Not Max Crosby, but Tyree Wilson was the number seven pick in the 2023 draft. I believe the Raiders are on their third GM since they've drafted him. Yeah, they've been. They're on their. The same actually. Same defensive scheme, but they've basically been using him as an interior pass rusher where he's really a strong side defensive end. 66275. This is just a body type they don't have right now. Exactly.
Landon
Yeah.
Marcus Moer
I. It wouldn't cost a ton to get him, but he is somebody like if you're betting on talent, not a bad one to bet on.
Landon
Yeah. And it's. It's exactly what you kind of need, right? Like you need that kind of big, big body that can play on the outside, hold it and then potentially give you. Maybe give you a little bit of something as a pass rusher inside. I mean, especially if you're not going to get it. Go get a defensive tackle. If you don't end up going to get a defensive tackle, he's a guy that could come in and serve a very similar role to a guy that you let go to Seattle, who is a pretty good defensive end as well. But we're not talking about outgoing defensive ends. We're talking about incoming defensive ends today.
Marcus Moer
What about Trey Hendrickson? He's the big name that everybody's been talking about. It doesn't seem like Cincinnati wants to deal, but we at least need to bring them up.
Landon
Yeah, I don't really know what Cincinnati's doing here. Right. Like, I mean, it's like they don't seem to know what they're doing.
Marcus Moer
Well, they're a game back in the division. That's probably partly why they don't want to trade them. Right. It feels like let's, let's hang on to him and we'll see.
Landon
Yeah, we'll see. Yeah, I guess so. I mean, I don't know. I, I, I think to me, yeah, I, I would be interested. I think those, the specifics matter here very much. Right. And so we would need to know what the price is. And then, and then, obviously, I think, you know, you're probably going to need to resign him when he gets here pretty soon. So, you know, those are all, those are all specifics that I, obviously the Cowboys are going to need to know before they make this trade.
Marcus Moer
All right, let's talk about the Miami defensive ends, Jalen Phillips and Bradley Chubb. Chop Robinson is their best pass rusher. He actually left week nine, the Thursday night game, with a concussion. Maybe that changes things here a little bit.
Landon
I don't know.
Marcus Moer
Jayla.
Landon
Also gonna lose that game, so it may not matter. You know, they may be on a fire sale either way.
Marcus Moer
So Jalen Phillips is a guy that we really like, has a extensive medical history, retired when he was at ucla, transferred to Miami, played really good football. He's had an Achilles injury, he's had a torn acl. But when he's on the field, this is a really good player.
Landon
Yeah, I mean, I really love the guy when he's on the field and the way he plays. And he's exactly like we said previously, he's the kind of guy that you need. He's a body type that you, that fits really well. You know, he's not Tyree Wilson's side, but he could still function as that strong side defensive. And he's bigger. He's probably close to, closer to 260, but less than that. I would say 255. And, and I think he can, you know, do what you need on the outside. On first and second down, where the Cowboys are struggling is players who can play both ways. Like, play, play both. I mean, by both ways, I mean the run in the pass effectively, and that's why they're struggling on first and second down. Because when there's, when, when teams can do whatever they want and they can play in a neutral game. Scripture the Cowboys are having a hard time with with with with the personnel that they deploy. Having a guy like Phillips who can be a pass rusher and a run, a solid run defender would really, really help this defense.
Marcus Moer
All right, let's talk about some defensive backs because that's another spot that the Cowboys could use a body or two. Is Minka Fitzpatrick a realistic trade target? We will get to that next. All right, let's talk about some defensive backs this is a spot that's a little harder to figure out. But do any names come to mind at corner or safety?
Landon
These are spots where people just aren't selling these guys too much. So we, you know, obviously, as you mentioned, Minka Fitzpatrick is a guy that we've heard just because the, the, the Dolphins, you know, potentially could be on a fire sale at this point. I also, we didn't really talk about Bradley Chubb. I just mentioned him real quick. He's, he's a more veteran guy. That would be kind of closer to a rental, though. He still isn't that old. He's, he's had like three ACL surgeries if I'm not mistaken, from both knees. So he is an older player. He's played pretty decently this year and maybe he's back fully from it, but there's a lot of risk there. So it, that's more likely a rental than a, like a corner piece kind of trade if they do that. So anyways, back to the corners. You know, Minka, I think is a guy that's already been traded twice. Twice at least. Yeah. And so it's interesting that, you know that, that they would trade him again, like, especially since they just traded for him, you know, a few months ago, if I'm not mistaken.
Marcus Moer
Well, and it's probably, if you can get him, you know, maybe Miami's at the point where, hey, we, we just value the draft picks. We're gonna need them to start this rebuild over.
Landon
Yeah. And I think he is the guy that you can build your, your, your defensive backfield around. Right. He's, he is a guy that could be a centerpiece in your defensive backfield as you start to acquire, acquire more talent. So I think he's worth a trade. I, I don't know what he's available for, but I would imagine he's, you know, he's a safety. So like second round pick probably.
Marcus Moer
That's been the rumored price and I always think that's a little high for a couple reasons. Number one, he's going to be 29 in November.
Landon
Yeah.
Marcus Moer
His contract is also big, big for a safety. It's, it's not outrageous or anything like that. And I just don't think 29 year old safeties who are making I think 16, 17 million a year are going to go for a second round pick. I think it's more likely like a fourth and something else. Right. And again, you, I think that's very palatable. I don't think it's going to be A second round pick.
Landon
I don't think maybe we're hearing second round because that's what the teams are, you know, telling the media.
Marcus Moer
I just saw that.
Landon
That's what he's worth.
Marcus Moer
NFL teams don't value safeties that much. I mean, he got trained for a first round pick back in 2019. I gotta believe his values decreased a lot more since then, now that he's a lot older and a lot more expensive.
Landon
Yeah, and, and then the last guy, Woolen, who plays for Seattle and you know, there's a change of the classic situation. You, you change out a head coach, you change out defensive coordinator, who is the head coach. And, and this, the systems just may not align as much. You know, Woolen is very much the definition. I mean, Will McClay must have been at this guy's birthday parties. Like, you know, just like following, following him around, just like asking if you could buy dinner and stuff.
Marcus Moer
Truth be told, the best way to find out a corner that you want the Cowboys to acquire is go to mock draftable sort by arm length and just go through the list to see the guys who are still in the league. The first name that comes up is Tyreek Woolen. So that makes total sense.
Landon
He's, he's the biggest of all the big cornerbacks. He's like the, the, the largest of all the large boys. So, you know, he's. If, if the Cowboys are looking to get a corner, who maybe is, you know, again, another guy who's is getting the end of his, of his contract probably will.
Marcus Moer
Right.
Landon
I mean, I think he's in the last year of his contract.
Marcus Moer
If I'm not, it's a rental for a year. Yeah.
Landon
So you either gotta make a plan to resign him or understand that you're just renting him. But again, as far as a fit for what the, what the Cowboys are looking for, I don't know about Eber flu specifically, but what the Cowboys are looking for, Tariq Willing would be a good fit.
Marcus Moer
He's been in and out of the starting lineup, so I think he's somebody that you get for a day three pick and then you just see how it goes the second half of the year. And if it works, you sign him. If not, you let him hit free agency and you pick up a comp pick. But I do think Woolen will get traded before the deadline and the Cowboys, because of their obsession with arm length at cornerback, seem like a natural fit. All right, that is it for today's show. We'd like to thank you for making Locked on Cowboys your first listen every single day. Check out the show on YouTube, download the podcast wherever you get your podcast. Episode: Top TRADE Targets For Cowboys REVEALED | Which DL Should Dallas Go After?
Hosts: Marcus Mosher & Landon McCool
Date: October 31, 2025
This episode dives into potential trade targets for the Dallas Cowboys as the NFL trade deadline looms. Hosts Marcus Mosher and Landon McCool focus on defensive positions (defensive tackle, end, cornerback, safety) as areas of need, evaluating players who could provide an immediate upgrade or serve as building blocks for the future. The conversation includes analysis of contracts, team needs, and realistic trade scenarios, providing Cowboys fans with both insider perspective and practical considerations.
Throughout the episode, Marcus and Landon balance optimism with realism—casting a wide net on trade candidates but cross-checking each with the Cowboys’ existing depth, cap space, and scheme fit. They caution fans about overvaluing splash trades and reiterate the importance of contract length, price, and how a new player integrates into the current defensive framework. Long-term building blocks are prized over mere rentals unless the price is too appealing, and the Cowboys’ persistent needs at defensive tackle and “big-bodied” defensive end continue to drive the wish list.
This episode is an in-depth look at how roster construction, salary management, and playoff ambitions intersect as the Cowboys look to make a splash—or at least solidify—their defense at the deadline.
For Cowboys fans or NFL roster geeks, this episode is both strategic and practical, mixing fan enthusiasm with front office reality.
