February’s Global Economic Outlook ranges across a world under strain — and in transition. Victor Hill examines the brutal suppression of Iran’s January uprising and the role of food inflation as a political accelerant, before widening the lens to global markets, elections, and shifting power blocs. From gold’s surge toward historic highs and the weakening dollar, to oil, Japan’s bond market, and uncertainty at the US Federal Reserve, the financial landscape is anything but settled. Geopolitically, this episode explores Donald Trump’s pharaonic return to the world stage at Davos, the strategic logic behind America’s push for Greenland, and the growing importance of the Arctic and Antarctic in a new era of great-power competition. In Europe, Macron’s waning authority, a possible Berlin–Rome axis, and Labour’s mounting troubles in the UK point to profound political realignments, while upcoming elections from Japan to the United States add further volatility. Victor also delves into the escalating debate over social media regulation, free speech, and AI, the uneasy dance between Europe, China, and Trump’s America, and the long, grinding endgame of the war in Ukraine. A wide-ranging, unsparing survey of the forces shaping the global economy — and the politics that now drive it. Donald Trump has passed his 100-days-in-office milestone with plenty of shock and awe bullets coming from the Oval Office. Has his administration boosted the world’s largest economy? Perhaps the truth is being reflected in the behaviour of the bond markets. In this podcast with financial economist Victor Hill and Master Investor’s Sarah Lowther, the pair discuss Trump, how the sidelining of Elon Musk has been good news for Tesla shareholders and wider geopolitics including the calm diplomacy of world leaders attending the funeral of Pope Francis. Equally symbolic, Hill reflects, is Charles III's opening of the new Canadian parliament. As politics is played out in real time, Victor also discusses on what is determining the gold, oil and cryptocurrency markets and what market watchers and the curious should be mindful of in terms of UK political manoeuvres and global events of consequence. Wednesday, 9 April 2025, saw the U.S. impose a 104% tariff on China. Beijing retaliated and raised its levy on U.S. imports to 84%. Will this tit for tat erode globalisation, or had the world trade model started unravelling years before Trump took office the first time round? Financial economist Victor Hill talks to Sarah Lowther about the end-of-life psychology driving Donald Trump's executive orders and how equities aren't in the dire straits some commentators would have investors believe. Victor compares Trump's actions to the Nixon Shock of 1971 and argues that while tariffs could generate significant revenue, they could also lead to increased inflation and a potential recession. As usual there's a silver lining and threads of optimism as Victor concludes that despite market volatility, long-term US Treasury yields and safe-haven assets like gold and the Japanese Yen are showing resilience. Donald Trump's 'new world order' may sound like a dystopian nightmare, but what impact are his flurry of executive orders and tariff policies having on the sleepless across the globe? Financial economist Victor Hill shares his insights with Master Investor's Sarah Lowther about how the U.S. President's administration is diminishing stock market performance and economic projections while cosying up to The Kremlin. Hill talks about 'Trump Whisperer' Keir Starmer and how the U.K. Prime Minister, his Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves and Climate Change minister Ed Milliband are in precarious positions unlike Wes Streeting who is revolutionising the NHS with AI and data-led initiatives. No podcast is complete without an honourable Elon Musk mention and Hill outlines how the armies and mining geologists of the future may be transported to their destinations in Musk's SpaceX fleet. Invest. Invest. Invest. Taxation. Taxation. Taxation. Is this the mantra and the reality of the Labour government's first budget in almost fourteen years? Financial economist Victor Hill explains whether the current economic climate and the new Chancellor's measures will reanimate growth in the UK against the country's debt to GDP ratio of over 100%. Hill calculates that by the end of the decade, the U.K. will still be rumbling along with a growth rate of around 1.2 to 1.4% which he says is not disastrous. What may put a spanner in the works for UK exporters though is another Trump presidency which has a fondness for tariffs on non-US made products. While Rachel Reeves' budget is still being scrutinised, Hill says the market expects more details to come about the measures and headline statements. The Bank of England has capitulated on its interest rate predictions before and time will tell if Reeves, as a former Bank of England economist, will do the same.
