Welcome to part six of this six part podcast limited series. If you're a man after 50, which I assume you are, if you're listening to this, then you already know Midlife can feel like a slow unraveling. The grief over who you once were, the pressure of who you're supposed to be. But the truth is, midlife doesn't have to be a crisis. It can be a resurrection. I'm Nelson Paul, an experiential psychologist. That makes it easy for men after 50, that is my Gen X peers, to reclaim identity and reinvent themselves. And today we're talking about what it means to step into your own midlife resurrection. Most men see midlife as decline, a downward slope. But decline only comes when you keep clinging to identities, roles and versions of yourself that no longer fit. The resurrection happens when you stop clinging, when you stop asking, how do I get back to who I was? And start asking who am I becoming next? That's where midlife becomes power. It's not the death of your story. It's the rebirth of a truer story. There are three steps to a midlife resurrection. One, Letting go. Identify the parts of you that no longer serve your best interests. Old identities, old definitions of success, Old armor that weighs you down. Two, facing the grief. Please don't skip this part. It's paramount in your journey. Like it or not, every ending carries grief. And that grief, if you face it, can transform you. If you avoid, tends to fester and drag you down. Three, claiming the new self. This is where the resurrection begins. Building a life not out of obligation, but out of alignment, not out of duty, but out of meaning. And the neuroscience of aging backs all this up. As I stated in a previous episode, research from the National Institutes of Health demonstrates there's, quote, multidirectionality, variability and plasticity in the nature and direction of change in physical health, cognitive functioning and well being during the middle years of the life cycle. What's this mean? Well, it means your brain is literally designed for midlife transformation. As a study published in the scholarly journal Human Relations confirms, midlife is an initiation. And initiations are supposed to be hard, but they're a necessary part of the journey toward growth and wholeness. So when midlife feels difficult, remember, that's not dysfunction, that's development. Here's something powerful you can do right now. I call it identity archaeology. Why? Because we're going to dig up what's been buried. You'll need a pen and paper for this one. Sorry to go old school on you, but at least I'm not asking you to record it on a cassette tape. Right? Now, take three sheets of paper. Sheet number who I was expected to be on this sheet. Write down all the roles, expectations, and identities others placed on you. Next up, sheet number two. Title this one, who I actually became. Here, list the person you are today. Be honest with yourself here, though. Last up, sheet number three. Title this one, who I'm choosing to become. This is your resurrection self. Now here's the key. Look at sheet number one. Cross out anything that was never really yours. Look at sheet number two and circle what you want to keep. Then use those circle items as the foundation for sheet number three. This isn't about throwing everything away. It's about conscious choice. That's what resurrection means. Choosing what lives and choosing what dies. If this episode and or exercise resonated with you, you're not alone. Every man in midlife wrestles with grief, identity and rebirth at some point. Every single one of us. That's why I created Resurrection Camp, a powerful five day challenge where we go deeper. And I guide you through this exact process, not in theory, but with daily practical exercises and milestones that help you release the old and rise into the new. If you're ready to start your midlife resurrection, log on to resurrection.com. you'll also find that link in the show notes of this podcast. And remember, every ending is a new beginning.
