The shooting took place at around noon mountain time at a campus event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Kirk was giving a speech for Turning Point USA, the group he founded in 2012. According to video and sources at the event, Kirk appeared to be hit in the neck by a single gunshot. A spokeswoman for the university said the suspect fired at Kirk from a building roughly 200 yards away. While reporters on the scene initially reported that a suspect had been taken into custody, subsequent reports say the shooter has not yet been apprehended. At the time of recording, the shooter is still at large. FBI Director Kash Patel said minutes after the attack that agents were on the way to the university.

Kirk was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead a few hours later. President Trump confirmed Kirk's death in a statement. Calling him a legendary figure, Trump wrote, quote, no one understood or had the heart of the youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. Kirk, 31, was answering audience questions at the Utah school when a shot rang out. He was struck in the neck mere seconds after answering a question about mass shootings. When news of the shooting was first reported, prayers poured in for Charlie from the White House and members of Congress as well as those who knew Kirk or were influenced by his work.
