I'm Daily Wire executive editor John Bickley. It's Thursday, August 7th, and this is Evening Wire. As Trump's peace deadline for Russia is coming to an end. The the president is drawing another hard line in the sand. He says he will not meet with Putin unless the Russian president agrees to also meet with Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky. Daily Wire reporter Zach Jewell has the details. The Kremlin had earlier claimed a Trump Putin summit was agreed upon in principle, but the White House says nothing has been finalized. While pushing for a trilateral meeting including Zelensky, that would follow the meeting between Putin and Trump, Trump has expressed growing frustration with Putin, accusing him of offering peace talks while escalating attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Meanwhile, Russia's stock market jumped over 4% on hopes for the meeting. Trump says he'll know within weeks whether Putin is serious, but for now, Zelenskyy must be at the table. Trump's sweeping reciprocal tariffs have officially taken effect. Daily Wire senior editor Joel Niedler has more. The tariffs taking effect today will affect goods from more than 60 countries in the European Union with duties of 10% or more. The move follows months of negotiations after Trump first unveiled the plan on April 2, later to be known as Liberation Day. While new trade deals were secured with partners like Japan, the UK And South Korea, India and Canada took the biggest hit. India faces massive tariff hikes over its continued purchase and resale of Russian oil, while tariffs on Canadian imports rose 35%, fueling tensions between the close allies. Speaking of those steep tariffs being hurled at India, the country's prime minister, Narendra Modi says he will not back down. The news follows Trump raising tariffs on Indian goods to 50% over the country's continued purchase of Russian oil, while Speaking in New New Delhi, Modi vowed that he won't compromise the interests of India's farmers, even if he'll, quote, pay a heavy price. Previous trade talks collapsed after five rounds. With Washington demanding greater access to India's farms and dairy markets. Modi is now reportedly planning his first visit to China in over seven years. President Trump is taking action to stop what he calls politically motivated debanking. As we reported this morning, the White House has been preparing an executive order banning banks from cutting off customers based on their religious or political beliefs. Under the order, regulators must remove such language from guidance manuals and banks will be urged to reinstate accounts that have been closed unlawfully. The Treasury Department will also be tasked with developing long term safeguards. The president also says he's ordering a brand new U.S. census. This one will exclude undocumented immigrants. In a social media post today, Trump directed the Commerce Department to begin work on what he calls a highly accurate census based partly on data from the 2024 election. The move could shift political power nationwide as census figures determine congressional seats and electoral college votes. Critics say it's unconstitutional, though the Census Bureau currently counts all residents, legal citizens or not. Army officials are praising the bravery of six soldiers who subdued yesterday's active shooter on Fort Stewart in Georgia. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll says quick thinking troops tackled the alleged gunman, preventing further bloodshed. One of the soldiers tackled the person. So just think about this. They were unarmed and ran at and tackled an armed person who they knew was actively shooting their buddies, their colleagues, their fellow soldiers. Another soldier jumped on top of the person to subdue them until federal law enforcement was able to arrive. The shooter, who was assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, was arrested and is now in pretrial confinement. Five soldiers were injured in the attack. So far, three of them have been released from the hospital while the other two remain in stable condition. Terrorists aligned with the Islamic State are attacking Christians in South and Central Africa. Two groups have posted photos showing the burning of churches and homes. One of the groups boasting of beheading Christians in Mozambique. The UN reports that attacks in northern Mozambique displaced 46,000 people in just eight days. Speaking to Fox News, former US diplomat Alberto Miguel Fernandez described the situation as a, quote, silent genocide. The fact that jihadist groups are in a position to take over not one, not two, but several countries in Africa, take over the whole country or most of several countries is dangerous. It's very dangerous for the national security of the United States, let alone the security of the poor people who are there, Christians or Muslims or whoever they are. The Associated Press has come under fire for an article sympathizing with Hezbollah. The report, published yesterday, highlights members of the terrorist organization who, quote, struggle to recover from a covert Israeli attack that caused the terror group's pagers and other communication devices to explode. The article tells the stories of injuries to fighters and family members, but fails to mention that Hezbollah is a known terrorist organization, instead referring to the body as a, quote, militant group or Shiite political party. The report ignited criticism online from the right, including media and Congress members alike. So far, the AP has stood by its story. A Minnesota man accused of killing the state's top House Democrat and her husband has pleaded not guilty in federal court. The 58 year old faces six charges, including murder and stalking after allegedly killing Melissa and Mark Hortman and wounding Senator John Hoffman and his wife in June. Prosecutors say he wore a fake police uniform and drove a mock squad car during the attack. No trial date has yet been set. Startling police data reveals that more than half of all carjacking arrests in Washington, D.C. over the last two years were minors. Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce breaks down the numbers. The arrestees range in age from 17 years old down to 12 following the brutal beating of a former Doge staffer by a group of teenagers on Sunday. President Trump has called on D.C. leadership to clean up the city and try minors as young as 14 as adults for such crimes. Trump said in a Truth Social Post quote, if DC doesn't get its act together and quickly, we will have no choice but to take federal control of the city and put criminals on notice. DC's Attorney General Brian Schaub has long opposed charging minors as adults, saying this in 2023, kids are kids and when you're talking about teenagers in particular, their brains are developing, their minds are developing and their biologically prone to make mistakes. The Texas attorney general is probing Beto o' Rourke's political group after it allegedly footed the bill for the Democrat legislators who fled the state. The representatives left to stall votes on the state's redistricting map. Attorney General Ken Paxton says o' Rourke's group may have violated bribery and other state laws by funding the Democrats. The group funded travel, lodging and other expenses for the representatives. Paxton said the probe is the first stage in the investigation. We're going to find out if they've done anything inappropriate, whether it's a bribe or whether some type of other campaign finance laws were broken. Zoran Mamdani's proposed war against charter schools is sparking outrage from parents. Daily Wire reporter Marita Lordy has more. The socialist and New York City mayoral hopeful says if he's elected, he would fight efforts to open more charter schools, which, according to the New York Post, largely educate minority and working class students. Mamdani also said he would audit charter schools and claimed they received too much public funding. Charter school parents and operators said Mamdani's plan would hurt students who deserved a choice in education. One charter school director said the schools helped Mamdani's platform by providing free education to families that cannot afford private school tuition. Charter school students usually score higher on standardized tests than public school students. Overnight, a glitch grounded more than 1,000 United Airlines flights at airports across the country. The United System, that calculates weights and balances and tracks flights, went down yesterday evening. The FAA says that delayed flights headed to Chicago, Denver, Houston, New Jersey and San Francisco 35% of flights were delayed and an additional 6% canceled. As of this morning, more than 100 flights were still delayed. It's not yet clear what caused the outage. According to findings by the cdc, the majority of Americans get more than half of their calories from ultra processed foods, Daily Wire reporter Amanda Presagiacomo explains. Some of the top sources of processed foods are things like burgers and sandwiches, sweet bakery products, savory snacks, pizza, and even sweetened beverages. American youth get more than 60% of their calories from ultra processed foods, and for adults it's more than 50%, according to the CDC. Ultra processed foods are associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease and all cause mortality. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Has said that ultra processed foods are poor poisoning Americans. These kind of chemicals are designed to make us insatiable, continually eating all day, never full, never satisfied, and getting less and less healthy. We're literally eating poison and it's a bird, it's a plane, it's actor Dean Cain taking you into custody for entering the US Illegally. That's the joke of the day. The Lois and Clark star, who is already a sworn law enforcement officer, said says he's joined Immigration and Customs Enforcement. And now Cain is encouraging his fans to join the agency as well. In a video posted to social media, he mentioned the pay and benefits for joining, including a recently announced $50,000 signing bonus. Cain said joining ICE is one of the best ways to help American citizens. I felt it was important to join with our first responders to help secure the safety of all Americans, not just talk about it. So, so I joined up. So if you want to help save America? ICE is arresting the worst of the worst and removing them from America's streets. All right. Those are your drive home updates.
