Andrew
And we're your Harry Potter friends, hosting a unique episode of Mugglecast. Today we are recording our Deathly Hallows Part 1 commentary track. You're going to need your own copy of Deathly Hallows today. We can't play the audio through the podcast, otherwise WB would sue us to hell. So please grab your copy while we tee up today's episode. This is the final movie for which we have to record a commentary track, which is unbelievable. We've even recorded commentary tracks for all the Fantastic Beasts movies. But for some reason, we never got around to Deathly Hallows Part 1. So we're doing that today.
Eric
Some reason, yes, indeed. And I don't remember what any of the reasons were or what order we went in. I think maybe during COVID we were like, we gotta do a movie commentary track because it'll be a good time and get people together. But we didn't pick that. Might have been when we did the first one, actually. I'm not sure. But Deathly Hallows Part 1 For no Love Lost. This is my favorite one. I'm really excited to do this commentary track because this might be my favorite of the movies.
Laura
Yeah, I agree with you. If I were to rank the movies, Deathly Hallows Part 1 is my favorite movie. I feel like, in terms of the quality of the adaptation, but also just the tone of the movie. I feel like the. This is the one that came the closest to accurately capturing both details from the book and also the setting and what it felt like to read the story. So I'm excited to watch it with y'.
Andrew
All.
Eric
Do you think it's because they finally gave it room to breathe? Because they turned it into two movies, which is what we were hoping that they would do, since, like, Goblet of Fire.
Micah
It's because we were all the run the whole time we were out in nature. So, yes, you literally could take some time to breathe. But I looked it up very, very briefly here. The first movie commentary we did was Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011.
Eric
Oh, so it must have been like a big event once the final movie was out.
Micah
Here's our commentary, followed by Fantastic Beasts.
Andrew
Well, isn't this perfect then? Because we started with DH Part two and now we're finishing with Part one. Weird.
Eric
Let's start this how we finished it, Tom, at the beginning.
Micah
Yes. Well, we're Gonna Release Part 2 the following week, right? We might as well.
Andrew
Sure, we'll rerecord that one.
Micah
No, no, we're not re recording.
Andrew
Oh, okay.
Micah
We're just gonna re release so we
Andrew
could talk about this more as we're watching for the next two and a half hours. Listeners, grand grab your copy of Deathly Hallows. You if you're. You know, we're in the streaming era now. If you're watching on a platform that has ads this, you're probably going to need to find a different copy, unfortunately, because you'll fall out of sync with us. But our sync point right now is through the WB logo. So go ahead and Start the movie. And as soon as the camera has fully gone through the WB logo, that's where you pause it. That's where we are all paused right now. And I'll count to three in a moment and we will all hit play together and we'll get watching.
Micah
Andrew, can I make one quick announcement before we.
Andrew
Oh, yes.
Micah
Go through the WB logo? It's appropriate that we're wrapping up our movie commentary because we're also wrapping up the mugglecast Collectors Club. Your five stickers have officially shipped. Check your mailboxes. Look out for some owls. Mind the droppings. They will be coming to your homes in the next, hopefully week or so, depending on what part of the world you live in. But this is, I know, a benefit on Patreon that we've been really proud of. It's something that we're excited to see your photos. So please, you know, tag us on social media and share them with us once you do get your final stickers and place them, whether it's on that placard or you've put them on your fridge or your computer, wherever you've decided to put them.
Eric
Micah, Regarding the droppings, I can't wait to hear from people like, hey, finally got my final year collector's club stickers, but an owl just all over my car.

Remember, we're all paused after the camera has fully swept through the WB logo. So listeners, make sure you are there right now. Hit pause on this episode if you need another minute to set this up. On three. Hit play on three. Hit play on three. Not after three. On three. Hit play.
Eric
I'm gonna turn my volume way up too.
Andrew
Okay, ready?
Laura
Yes.
Andrew
One, two, three.
Laura
All right.
Eric
Ooh, it's a creepy scrapey sound, like
Andrew
metal needs to turn on closed captioning so I can hear both you all and the movie properly. So, yeah, I think. Harry Potter will not talk with you.
Micah
Isn't this appropriate on the fourth of July?
Andrew
Yeah.
Eric
A stately message.
Andrew
We're recording on the 4th of July. We thought, what's a easy episode for us to record brain power wise on a holiday? This, the commentary track that we still need to do.
Eric
You know, it's interesting because doing this, releasing this as we're starting our Deathly Hallows chapter by chapter is also very timely and.
Andrew
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Eric
You know, getting to talk about getting to see Scrimjour in the few short moments he has left, be a leader or project this idea of strength, when in fact we know that the Ministry is infiltrated and crumbling. It's just very interesting.
Micah
Yeah, I think that's it. We don't see him again.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Oh, wow. And that was a little glimpse inside Hermione's Muggle home with her parents. We're hoping in the TV series we're actually gonna see them very early in the.
Eric
You know what's funny is Vernon's little car with, like, the little trailer in the back, because I just picture everyone in Britain having a smaller car, like a reasonable, like, economy vehicle and not a big loading truck. So they. They've got this little sedan and it has this little. Little hopper in the back of it where they have all their luggage. And I'm just thinking that's how British people move.
Andrew
I didn't think about it before, but. Oh, this is sad.
Laura
Oh, I love how they put this in the movie because we just get to hear about it in the book. We don't actually. We don't actually read this happening in the book. Yeah.
Andrew
Would this be allowed? Isn't she. Is this technically loud?
Laura
She's old enough, mind you.
Andrew
Oh, right, okay.
Micah
Oh, cattle and stone.
Andrew
Oh, my God, this is sad.
Eric
Oh,
Andrew
I. I wonder if One reason why. Oh, the baby pictures. Do you think those are real photos of Emma as a baby?
Laura
I bet they probably are. They do look like her.
Andrew
I wanted to be a witch.
Eric
Oh, yeah. We could talk deleted scenes someday, so.
Andrew
Yeah. Well, there is a deleted scene where Dudley and Harry have a moment, just like in the book. Right. They did shoot that deleted scene.
Laura
That's.
Andrew
That's too bad.
Micah
That's in Petunia as well.
Andrew
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Laura
Yeah.
Micah
She says something along the lines that you didn't just lose your mother that night. I lost the sister.
Eric
I lost the sister. God, Hermione can't even drive.
Andrew
I love how we're going back and forth between the trio.
Laura
Yeah, right.
Eric
It really equalizes them. It really shows that they, like, these are the films. Three leads. And the rest of the film, you know, honors that.
Laura
Yeah. It also sets the tone. Like, buckle up, y', all, it's getting real.
Micah
And I can't remember if this is in the film. I guess we'll find out in a little bit. But Yaxley and I believe it's one other Death Eater do go to Hermione's parents home to find it empty. And I. I want to say that might have been a deleted scene as well.
Eric
I think it might be a deleted scene.
Laura
I think it's a deleted scene.
Andrew
Oh.
Eric
Oh, God. I need an adjustment here where I have to pull down all my blackout curtains because I can't make sure what the hell is, like, what this. This is.
Andrew
I'm turning down my key light right now because I couldn't see Snake.
Eric
I. I see Alex light blazing and I don't see anything else in this shot. These movies are so dark.
Laura
So no portraits to spy on him as he walks in here.
Micah
No. You actually either.
Andrew
Yeah, we were just talking about that too. This is terrifying. Like I said in the studio tour, you can see this whole set with Charity floating over the table too. So just to take us back in time, it really doesn't feel. It kind of doesn't feel special at all now, dare I say. But it was wild going into this movie and being like, wow, this is just part one of a single book.
Eric
Oh, yeah.
Andrew
I still remember the day Warner Brothers announced they were splitting the book into two movies. It was just shocking and so exciting. And, you know, Laura and. Who was it? Eric or Micah? You said it's. This is your favorite movie.
Eric
Is it?
Andrew
Because it does have so much more room to breathe the story.
Laura
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Eric
I think that although this was not the plot that I would have chosen to isolate of Camping, because what the hell happens in book seven, it nevertheless gives everything room and the actors really get to shine as their characters. And so this is the film where I thought everyone had finally or completely become the characters that they've been portraying. They were always their characters. But this film feels like it's the journey with those characters. So it's like the perfect marriage of, if you're familiar with the characters from the books, actually Seeing them on screen, this film gets it right the most.
Andrew
How about you, Laura?
Laura
I have to agree with everything Eric said. Like, I would just be repeating it. And it's, you know, very much like I said earlier. It just feels like it is the perfect balance of being a true adaptation and that it is very faithful, but it is not faithful to the point of feeling clunky. You know, sometimes certain adaptations are so stuck on being faithful that everything has to be an exact replica of what happened in the book. And, you know, sometimes what worked in the book doesn't work on screen. So I felt like they struck a really good balance here.
Eric
Speaking of this, too, with Ralph Fiennes. I really have always loved Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort. And it's interesting because there's. Okay, we gotta talk about this. Clearly, we have to talk about this. But in the book, he has red eyes that are slits. And that just was never gonna fly. You need to be able to see into the eyes of the portrait of the soul. You need to see his eyes for. To connect to Voldemort.
Andrew
So I think it just would have been too creepy, red eyes in the movie, especially earlier.
Eric
His nails are creepy. They found other ways to make Voldemort off pudding without completely destroying his, I guess, humanity.
Micah
I remember hearing reports from the set that the actors were literally terrified of Ralph Fiennes in these scenes just because of how well he was performing as Voldemort.
Laura
And see, that's the thing. I'm of two minds on Ralph Fiennes in these kinds of scenes. The scenes with quiet intimidation. He's incredible in the role. When you get to battle scenes and he's, like, making all these weird noises.
Andrew
What, is that on him?
Micah
Or is that on David Yates?
Eric
I think it's the one.
Andrew
It's a good question. Yeah, right. Who directed him? And then, of course, I'm sure we talked about this in the Deathly Hallows Part 2 commentary track. But just the stuff they shot for the purposes of 3D screenings was just ridiculous. Harry and Voldemort's heads merging like people
Laura
dying and dissolving into ash and floating away. I hated that.
Eric
Yeah, that looked great in 3D. Don't knock it till you have your 3D glasses, everybody.
Andrew
I'll be curious to see if we see anything in this movie that seems like it was shot for 3D. Because also, you know, going back in time, 3D films in theaters were hot. They even tried to do it at home. There was, like, 3D Blu Rays, you Could buy.
Eric
Oh, God, where are they?
Andrew
3D TVs too, right?
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
So, speaking of the movie going experience, I wanted to ask you guys. As y' all probably know right now, a hot trend at movie theaters right now and with big releases is special popcorn buckets.
Eric
Oh.
Andrew
Like with Toy Story 5, there was a Buzz Lightyear one and a Pixar Ball one. Or, you know, with. With different movies, Barbie. There was the Barbie doll box as the popcorn bucket. If Deathly Hours or a Harry Potter movie hit theaters today, what would be the special popcorn bucket?
Laura
Oh, for part one, definitely Nagini unhinging her jaw. Perfect timing for the scene we're in.
Andrew
Yes, yes.
Micah
And there would be a little charity figurine at the bottom.
Andrew
Y' all are.
Eric
Don't choke on it.
Andrew
I'm gonna keep an eye out. Oh, Dumbledore. I'm gonna keep an eye out.
Eric
For what?
Andrew
Maybe Astronomy. Tower of Terror.
Micah
Popcorn bucket.
Andrew
Astronomy Tower Bucket. Or Hogwarts. Hogwarts. They do a Hogwarts popcorn bucket. Didn't some movie theaters have, like, 3D glasses that looked like Harry's glasses?
Eric
Yes. Yes, I have a pair.
Laura
I didn't have that.
Andrew
I don't think I did either. R, A, B.
Eric
Who is RAB?
Laura
They're like, hey, just in case you
Micah
forgot, having already read the first two chapters of the book. I know. I think it was. Laura, you mentioned just before how faithful it actually is. I mean, obviously they're leaving out little things here and there, but I did forget how faithful some of this actually was adapted.
Andrew
I was just thinking about that, too, Micah. I really appreciate that. Quick shot of Alphias Doge's tribute to Dumbledore. The mirror. Right, well. But it only got introduced. Yeah, it only started showing up.
Micah
Sirius never even gave it to him. In the Order of the Phoenix.
Laura
Right. And so, like, if you didn't read the books, you would be like, why does he have this shattered piece of glass?
Eric
Let's see. Is he. Is he okay? Is he mentally?
Laura
I mean, he's not for sure.
Eric
No. He's in mourning.
Laura
Yeah.
Eric
His bestie, abusive leader, has died.
Andrew
No, it is kind of funny how, like, a lot of this just. You got to kind of fill in the blanks yourself. Like, oh, Hagrid was planning to show up at his door. Okay.
Eric
Yeah, well, I appreciate that. Moody is just miserable. He's all business like, let's get in here. Just have his.
Laura
Oh, you know what? Elizabeth is answering your question, Andrew, about the popcorn bucket. She's saying Hermione's expanded Purse with free popcorn refills.
Andrew
Yeah.
Laura
And see, husband, little things like this where it's like, oh, by the way, this is, this. Is this Weasley brother you've never seen? And oh, by the way, he got attacked by Fenrir back. And oh, Lubin and Tonks are married. Cool. Got it.
Andrew
And they clearly are in love and they're going to live happily ever after. Right?
Eric
Right.
Laura
Absolutely.
Andrew
My husband, the joker.
Eric
You did that pretty well, Andrew.
Andrew
Oh, thanks.
Laura
This scene is so good, though.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
I can't wait to get to this chapter and chapter by chapter.
Laura
I love Brendan Gleason. He's so great.
Andrew
I want to see Hagrid hitting his head on the ceiling.
Eric
Yeah. Oh, mandungus.
Laura
And see, this is one too where they could have introduced him earlier in the movies. I think it would have had more impact.
Eric
I agree. But it is the right amount of his characterization is pretty good.
Andrew
Oh, yeah, you're talking about Moody.
Eric
No, no, no, Fletcher. Because he's the one that gets Moody killed, essentially.
Andrew
I forgot about that line.
Eric
Was that in the book?
Laura
No, I don't think so.
Andrew
Goblin Piss. You know, there's a. There's a dive bar here in Vegas called Goblin Piss. No, no, no, no. It's one of the best pizza places in town.
Eric
Red Dwarf.
Andrew
And they have a beer called Dwarf Piss.
Micah
Is it good?
Andrew
No, it's. It's very bad.
Micah
Is it like Malort?
Andrew
No, it's like a lager, but it's cheap.
Eric
Hilarious.
Laura
I just love watching Dan portraying these other characters. Like really pay attention to the facial expressions. He's so good, you know.
Andrew
We should have known he was born for Broadway after this scene.
Eric
This movie was really.
Andrew
It hits differently now that Robbie Coltrane has passed.
Eric
You know, we have a friend, Adam, who you all know was just for the first time on Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure yesterday. Oh, and he sent me a little video. And during the ride, I forgot Robert talks to you. He rode the main.
Micah
The motorbike.
Eric
But yeah, Robbie Coltrane is talks to you the entire ride. And it just felt. I was getting in my feels yesterday while watching it.
Andrew
Rachel Puff said, I thought polyjuice was a little overused in these movies and books. It does. It becomes a bit of a crutch plot wise.
Eric
What sort of bothers me is just the whole they keep their voice thing, which in the first. The first time they did it for the second movie, I guess made sense so the audience could keep up. But should not absolutely be the case in future adaptations because I Think it's dumb? I don't think it makes any sense.
Andrew
No, I. I think it makes sense. Like you said, I. It's important for the viewers to understand.
Laura
And what I actually like about. Oh, here we go. Oh, shit, y'. All. What I. What I really like about it from a movie perspective is one, it's good for the viewers, but it actually kind of gives Polyjuice Potion a bit of a hindrance insofar as, like, it can get you in the door because you look like this person, but it's harder for you to pass because you can't sound like the person. I think that's actually a way that in the books, Polyjuice Potion is a little bit. It makes people a little bit overpowered, if you will.
Eric
It's like, too soon. I have enough trouble passing in the real world. I want a potion that'll just help me all the way through. You know what I'm saying?
Andrew
I forgot Harry Potter got all fast and furious.
Laura
Yep, here we go. Across the top of the bus.
Eric
Yeah. If it's only for an hour. The potion should do what it does in the book.
Andrew
Aw, Hagrid.
Eric
Hedwig.
Laura
No.
Andrew
Remember, the author said the. The reason Hedwig dies. Well, maybe one reason. That was brutal. Yeah, that poor animal. Flying down, falling down. I guess I should say Hedwig's death marked the end of Harry's childhood. Like, that was kind of.
Eric
Oh, that's when it ended. There. Right there. It ended not a minute before, not when Devildore died, you know.
Andrew
Yeah, well, Hedwig was one of Harry's introductions to the wizarding world with Hagrid at his side, come to think of it.
Eric
Oh, the power lines. I forgot about the power lines.
Laura
Okay, now this is something I really want them to fix in the show because I'm so tired of how in the movies they're like, every battle is going to have the priori incantate effect. And it's like, that's not how this works because he has Lucius's wand right now, so they would not be doing that.
Eric
Yep, that's a good point.
Andrew
Cinematically, you know, we were just talking about what's easy for audiences to follow. I agree with you, Laura, but I just feel like it's a good way of showing an actual duel where the two spells are kind of fighting one another.
Laura
Well, they can find another way. Get creative.
Andrew
You have HBO 3.
Micah
Uh.
Andrew
Oh, hey, you know, House of the Dragon kicked off a couple weeks ago, and past two episodes have been really good. It's making me excited about the TV show. Like, wow, they're spending money.
Laura
Yeah. House of the Dragon is pretty good. I haven't started season three yet.
Eric
My dad is all caught up. He texted me that he binged the last two seasons and I was like, I didn't even know you were watching that show.
Micah
There are 10 dragons.
Eric
Oh, yeah.
Andrew
Exactly. The Burrow really evolved over the course of the movies.
Laura
Well, they had to rebuild it after it burned down.
Eric
Right. Do we think right now in the
Micah
TV show that they will go to the Tonks residence versus the borough? least with Harry. Right. Because isn't that where Harry goes?
Andrew
It is, I would think. That's a good question.
Micah
This works for the purposes of a two and a half hour movie. It's a familiar spot.
Eric
Right.
Andrew
I say, yes, I'll go to Tonks House if that's where they go.
Eric
Poor thing.
Andrew
Again, barely.
Eric
The other thing adaptation wise is only Voldemort can fly. It's a big deal that Voldemort can fly. None of these like Death Eaters swooping in crap. That should not happen. Also, I hope that's true to the movies that a grindy low is in a tank there because.
Laura
I do like how they characterize Lupin unraveling in this movie because like in the book, you start to see a different side of him that is less well received, you know. So it's nice to see that here.
Andrew
On going to Tonks House, Roshani says, I hope they do. We meet Ted and it's sadder when he dies. Yes, 100%.
Micah
Yeah. So why do they stop challenging each other after Kingsley and Lupin?
Andrew
They gotta keep it moving.
Eric
They gotta keep it moving. They never would have. Yeah.
Laura
Ron with Harry, nobody would want to impersonate Ron Weasley.
Eric
Yeah. Yeah.
Andrew
What a loser.
Eric
Aw Trio. Golden Trio.
Andrew
Nobody would want to pretend to be any Weasley for that matter. Right.
Eric
That is some good acting on the part of Mark Williams.
Micah
You can feel the gravity of the moment.
Eric
Yeah.
Laura
I love that they put this in the movie.
Andrew
Oh my God. This is, you know, this is the benefit of splitting the book into two.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
And really Deathly Hallows being split I think is the only success story in terms of other book to films adaptations. Trying to do this like didn't go well with Breaking dawn. Hunger Games 2.
Eric
Well, Hunger Games might actually. So Mockingjay. I really like the two for Mockingjay, but it's limited. It's very limited. Times that it was successful
Andrew
and I'm even talking box office Let me look them up, because.
Micah
Yeah, again, you can feel the gravity of the moment with the announcement of Mad Eye's death.
Andrew
Yeah, I take that back.
Eric
Recap. Flashback. Good use of Slughorn there.
Laura
Yeah. This was actually an example of a good montage. I feel like these movies often relied way too much on montages, but that was a good placement.
Andrew
Oh, yeah, We've criticized movie. Well, I have at least Movie Five. All the montages. And that. Not for me, not for Hermione.
Laura
You. Yeah, I like, everyone's like, yo, slow your roll, man. Like, this is not all about you. Okay.
Andrew
Ron's looking good. Yeah, slow down, Harry.
Laura
Wait until the Ministry falls and then we can. Peace out. Plus, we need that bag that Hermione has.
Eric
Yeah, it's a pretty good bag.
Andrew
It's got a lot of popcorn in
Eric
it and a Nick Cave vinyl, for some reason.
Andrew
Did we all. I'm trying to remember what we did for Deathly Hallows Part 1, the movie release. We didn't.
Laura
I don't think. I mean, I didn't do anything. I was in my senior year of college. I went to see it with my roommate.
Eric
The last three we had seen advanced screenings of. And I think, Andrew, you and I might have gone for this advanced screening.
Andrew
I just remembered, too, this. I sounded like I'm teeing myself up for a humble brag. But I went to the premiere of this one in New York. I remember that now.
Eric
Nice.
Micah
I remember seeing a screening of it in New York. It was a press screening, not the premiere.
Eric
Oh, like the week before.
Micah
Yeah. And then, Andrew, didn't you also do Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiere? Because I remember Terry was in town. And, yes, it was right around the time a Dance with Dragons came out as well, because she was the one who introduced me to Game of Thrones.
Andrew
Oh, wow.
Eric
That affected history. Our own personal history. I mean, that's cool. Awkward entrance, Ginny.
Laura
I know.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Zip me up, babe.
Eric
The thing is, I don't have a single thing against Bonnie. Right. And I have the exact opposite of that. Any number of things against how Ginny is written and the direction.
Laura
Agreed.
Eric
I still think they get it. I still think they have chemistry, but it's not explored and it's not great.
Laura
There's really not room for any chemistry to breathe in these movies the way that they directed them.
Andrew
No time to breathe now. With all this smogging too.
Laura
Well, this is, like, the most chemistry we get from them.
Eric
Yeah, but they. They haven't. But George tiptoeing, like, weirdly through the back was hilarious.
Andrew
Does he have a who kisses right in front of your bra?
Micah
Toothbrush?
Laura
Well, he didn't mean to.
Eric
It's unavoidable.
Micah
Yes, he does. I didn't notice that before.
Andrew
Yeah, but like you didn't notice George was right there.
Micah
No, no, I didn't notice he had a toothbrush in his ear.
Andrew
Yeah. Was that a toothbrush?
Micah
I mean, what else?
Laura
It kind of looked like one.
Andrew
I don't know. A spoon?
Eric
You guys have to join us in a few months and help us raise the tent. You good? You got your wand?
Micah
Oh, I lied. We will see Rufus Scribger again.
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
Oh, yeah, Harry. Also, here's some stuff from Dumbledore.
Laura
That's an accurate summary of what happens.
Andrew
Help us, Harry.
Eric
What I appreciate is how far apart they were physically. Like have the complete opposite side of the room.
Micah
Ron looks like so excited, doesn't he?
Eric
He's like, oh, what am I gonna get?
Andrew
What am I gonna get?
Eric
What am I gonna get? What did Dumbledore give me? I really like the way that paper folds in these movies. Like any letter, any envelope. That is magical design of it.
Andrew
This is gonna sound morbid, but if Minalima sold a prince of Dumbledore's will, I think I would want it.
Laura
Yeah.
Micah
Are you sure they don't?
Eric
What other meaning do you have? You have a few, right?
Andrew
Just two of that Life and Lies one that I talk about in an upcoming chapter by chapter. And then when Muggles attack. That's right, the COVID and the backside too. I just thought that was so cool for.
Eric
It's fun.
Andrew
Sometimes art just speaks to you. Mina Lima. Dumbledore's will. Oh, wait, you can buy it.
Laura
Okay.
Andrew
199 pounds.
Eric
Wow.
Laura
Where in your house would you display it?
Andrew
Where should I display it? In the bathroom?
Eric
Yeah. Next to the knitting patterns. Yeah.
Laura
Give people some bathroom reading.
Andrew
Yeah.
Eric
Come on. Babbity gravity, anybody? No. Huh? This is good. And it definitely doesn't have anything hidden inside it, so don't be looking.
Andrew
He doesn't open at the close.
Eric
No matter what you do, don't put this in your mouth.
Laura
Not yet anyway. It's not time yet.
Eric
Oh, they all expected to do something.
Laura
I think he did too.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
Yeah. He's looking to figure out why Dumbledore left these things. Right. Oh, I want that.
Eric
Okay. That's pretty cool.
Andrew
Darn right, Hermione. Boom.
Laura
I kind of have to agree with Scrimjor there.
Micah
I do too.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Yeah, you child. What do you know?
Eric
But I wonder what Dumbledore meant by giving it to Harry or like, you know, willing it to him.
Laura
Well, because he needs it to feeding Horcruxes. Take out Nagini.
Eric
What's. It's so interesting that the book, the story involves itself with like, property ownership and things because, like, this is such a real world issue with like, oh, the legality of who owns what and things. Like, I find it interesting in a good way that there's still these little arguments to be made while there's like, you know, Voldemort's back and taking over the world.
Andrew
I hate to date this commentary track, but did you guys see Taylor and Travis got married yesterday? Oh, my gosh.
Eric
I think that this wedding has more character than theirs did.
Laura
Well, I don't think we'll ever know because apparently everyone who went to it had to sign an NDA.
Andrew
So there's already a rumor that. And this would not surprise me, being the capitalist that she is, but that they filmed the wedding and they're eventually going to release it, you know, for the public, which would be so stupid.
Eric
Does she walk down the aisle to, like, one of her own songs?
Andrew
Like, I don't know.
Eric
I love
Laura
Same
Eric
on gnomes.
Andrew
Xenophelias. Lovegood. I gotta remember that. Not Xeno. Xeno.
Micah
Also in House of the Dragon.
Laura
Yep.
Eric
Yeah, yeah.
Laura
Perfect casting for this role, though.
Eric
Real good.
Andrew
I just love how Luna and Zeno are kind of matching in terms of
Eric
their wedding and personality. They.
Andrew
Oh, yeah, of course.
Eric
They really feel like family.
Andrew
Aw. Alphys.
Micah
Yeah.
Eric
What I appreciate about this side of Harry is it is inquisitive and it is like it. He's actually trying to pursue the mystery here. Unlike Harry in the books, I quote that always somehow people never do seem to count blank. 800 pages. Who does she think she is?
Andrew
This is me at any wedding, dishing the tea.
Laura
You're the gossipy queen at any wedding
Andrew
wearing a little whatever that's gonna. Actually. This is my wedding look for Eric's wedding.
Eric
I love this. If you come wearing this, you're gonna get the star treatment. I'm gonna. We're gonna be in all the photographs, no matter whose side of the family we're photographing. Andrew Anti Muriel Sims. I love this. You know, this is such a shock to Harry as a dump, but it. But it is in the books. And so having this, like, weird old lady who's gleefully devastating Harry works because as an audience, we're equally devastated.
Andrew
Well, yeah, Yeah, I agree. The. The new revelations are so interesting to
Eric
Read
Andrew
and painful to watch Harry hear these things.
Eric
How does the Patronus work? Like a shooting star. Like.
Andrew
I think it's pretty cool. Oh, that was quick.
Micah
That's one thing I do hope that they establish more in the TV show is communication through Patronus. Because that's not in the form of. I believe. Isn't it Kingsley's Patronus.
Eric
A lynx? I thought it was. Well, it's unclear to me how they can all of a sudden get to the wedding, but I guess. Was the Ministry offering protection or. We'll get to this in the book.
Andrew
Doesn't it seem silly to have done this wedding given all that's going on? Like, yeah, you want some moments of, like, joy and happiness, but it'd be like Taylor and Travis do it inside a secure venue like Madison Square Garden where people just can't.
Eric
Like you were.
Andrew
There's bandaid or watch, you know.
Laura
Do you think the Weasleys can afford Madison Square Garden?
Andrew
I didn't say they should have done in Madison Square Garden, but somewhere more protected.
Eric
Well, Bill works at a bank.
Andrew
Do it in, like Grimwald Place or something.
Eric
So does Fleur.
Laura
You know what I like, I remember infiltrated now.
Eric
Yeah. This was one of the shots that we got early, like promotional of them filming. This was like in. Because it's like Piccadilly Circus. And like, we saw them in their outfits and it seemed like, oh, this is really cool. Like wizards and witches in the. In the Muggle world. How unusual.
Andrew
If you look carefully, you can see the McDonald's where Jamie Lawrence ate 12 Big Macs in one sitting.
Eric
Yeah.
Laura
What? This isn't it right here.
Micah
Rachel Puff is bringing up in the discord that Harry actually used Polyjuice at the wedding. In the book.
Laura
Yes.
Micah
So another Polyjuice moment. But she was glad that they changed it for the movies.
Laura
Yeah. They disguised him as like a Weasley cousin. Yeah, I think.
Eric
Yeah.
Micah
You said his name Hermione.
Andrew
Mm. A go bag. Smart. This is funny. Nowhere safe. Leave woman.
Laura
And she's like, you don't got to tell me. I'm out. Bye.
Andrew
Can I bring my headphones?
Micah
She's going to be in so much trouble tomorrow.
Eric
Oh, yeah. I have to rewind that back. I'm not sure he was.
Andrew
I wish Ron grabbed a pastry right here.
Eric
Oh, my God. Well, no one else is going
Micah
to.
Andrew
You're the boss, Harry.
Eric
Imani,
Andrew
lick it off her face.
Laura
Honestly. This is where Movie Ron has more game than Book Run.
Eric
Yeah.
Laura
Book Run would not have done that.
Eric
No,
Andrew
Becky has said it Was so cool. It's so cool that the London Cursed Child show is on Shaftesbury Avenue as that was the street they apparated to in the movie. I didn't know that. That's an interesting tie in.
Micah
You can see the emotion on Rionie's face. No. Given what she had to do to her parents earlier on in the film.
Eric
Yeah.
Micah
Oh yeah. And now she's being tasked with doing that to Dolahov.
Andrew
How funny would it be with the TV show they're filming, you know, Deathly Allah scenes and they walk by the Cursed Child theater in London. That'd be a fun Easter egg. There we go. This is where the wedding should have been.
Eric
This cramped.
Andrew
Nothing says romance like 12. Grim old place.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Dusty, dark, having Mrs. Black screaming.
Eric
Yeah, I am Jacks. I love that. Oh, this thing that never makes any sense in the books.
Andrew
Yeah. But yeah,
Laura
it's kind of a cool visual though.
Eric
Yeah,
Andrew
it is cool. It is cool though. I don't know. I think it's a cool bit of security.
Micah
Yeah.
Eric
I think it's just meant to. What? Psych out Severus Snape who like has control of his faculties the entire time. So it doesn't work. We're alone.
Andrew
Was it like dust? Yeah, yeah, that figure.
Micah
It's Dumbledore's ashes.
Laura
Oh,
Andrew
Carly said about that scene, the fight in the restaurant. You just know that girl's co workers came in the next morning. Like who closed last night.
Eric
Love that. Let me get some natural light.
Andrew
Yeah.
Eric
Finally.
Laura
Not anymore.
Andrew
Some curtains in there.
Laura
Hope you enjoyed that. Back to the darkness. Now.
Andrew
This door literally says serious. Like what is he, an 8 year old?
Eric
No girls allowed?
Andrew
Is that weird to anybody else? Like why would the.
Laura
It feels like a very old timey thing that people used to do.
Andrew
Okay, maybe that's.
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
I'm just being a stupid American.
Laura
And I mean, presumably this was his childhood bedroom.
Andrew
Yeah.
Laura
Although why he would have a copy of History of Magic in there.
Micah
Yeah.
Eric
A copy of History of Magic looks like it's mold eaten.
Andrew
R A B.
Laura
No, I will say the fact that his entire legal name is just on
Eric
his door is a very serious.
Andrew
What the heck? That's why the names were on the doors. Just for that. That is too funny.
Micah
Nope.
Andrew
The closed captioning said said. Banging, clattering. I thought it said banging and clanging for a minute.
Eric
Classic.
Micah
John Williams is here. Tattoos behind that door.
Eric
I love that. Hello children.
Andrew
He's working on the score. Another fun fact, right. They included Creature in Movie five because Rowling said He comes into play later.
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
Do I have that right?
Laura
Yeah.
Micah
Yeah.
Laura
It would have been a huge miss not to include him in movie five.
Eric
Mm.
Andrew
Yeah. Protect a girl, ron.
Micah
It.
Andrew
And that little twerp.
Eric
Twerp is hilarious.
Andrew
Kind of funny aside, Pat and I were in a bar a few weeks ago, and on one of the TVs across the bar, it was a good distance away, Deathly Hallows Part 1 was playing and there was TVs in front of us with other things. But we were glued to that TV across the way watching Deathly Hallows. And the bartender noticed and was like, do you want me to turn it on? On the closer tv, we're like, no, no, that's fine.
Eric
No, we're only casually very interested right now.
Micah
Yeah. And another fun fact. Cormac McClagen should not be on that train.
Eric
Oh.
Andrew
Because he is aged out.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
Yeah. Oh, good. Interesting.
Eric
I like that they tried to give us, like, perspective of what's going on at Hogwarts because that's something that's not in the books, but it's very limited and not great.
Andrew
So at the New Wizarding World Land at Epic Universe in Florida, they built the Ministry of Magic. This area. And it is impressive. It feels large. You walk through it at the start of the ride and through it again at the end, which I thought was a really nice touch. So, like, you could take pictures if you didn't when you're walking in.
Laura
Oh, look, it's ice.
Eric
The Black family had a piano, and it's still tuned. Mm. Magic.
Micah
What?
Laura
I just like how Harry's just like, what am I supposed to do with this? Maybe I should put it in my mouth again.
Eric
Have you tried putting it in your mouth?
Andrew
Something else has to touch it. His tongue.
Laura
But again, once again, Hermione's right.
Eric
Yep. Yeah.
Andrew
Get him.
Eric
Oh, dobby.
Laura
I do love this scene.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
I love his shoes.
Eric
Yeah, they look comfortable.
Andrew
And they're just, like, a little oversized, it looks like, to me, for his skinny little dobby body.
Eric
Dobby body.
Andrew
I bet they're gonna. I mean, he has to look like this with, like, the pillowcase over him. But, like, I bet they're gonna make him super cute in the TV show somehow.
Laura
Well, you gotta see all the, like, oversized socks and stuff that he wears.
Andrew
Yeah, yeah. Me thinking about all the Pokemon cards I gave away
Eric
or video games we sold for pennies on the dollar. What she said.
Andrew
How convenient.
Eric
I love that, though. Sometimes. Sometimes it works that way. But this ain't great. Now, the stakes are high.
Andrew
Not this again.
Micah
We had enough of her. They really should have brought a centaur with them.
Andrew
Oh, my God. That would have caused the scene in a lot of ways.
Micah
Well, more polyjuice.
Andrew
Yep. And this is the thing. It's just, like, cool concepts, but just the frequency at which they use it. Micah's got a Minions mug. Are you a big Minions fan, Micah?
Micah
I like them. Yeah.
Andrew
You gonna go see the new movie? I heard good things. Minions versus Monsters. I heard there's like a. This could be wrong, but I heard there's like a 10 minute sequence where it's just only Minions speak.
Micah
I saw they outfitted Big Ben in minion design or whatever, the projection. Yeah.
Andrew
It was pretty cool.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Apparently they go really hard over there these days with promoting movies in ways like that.
Eric
Bless these actors, by the way, who do absolutely incredible portrayals of the other actors.
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
It is cool to see that.
Micah
The amount of studying they must have done to get the mannerisms correct.
Andrew
And you would have to think they work with Dan, Emma and Rupert to like, hey, what tips can you give me to become you?
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
Or your characters, I should say.
Eric
This is one of the best, I think, jokes or bits in the whole series of, like, civil servants.
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
Having to flush themselves into the ministry.
Laura
Yeah, yeah.
Andrew
Says something.
Eric
It works on a lot of levels.
Andrew
That's been a part of Harry Potter fan fandom, I'd say, too. Like, you'll see people, like, put a sticker above a toilet that says ministry and then a down arrow.
Eric
Yeah, yeah. Or at friends homes when they do, like a Harry Potter gathering mystery this way.
Andrew
I feel like I've seen that at, like, bars.
Micah
That how you got into the ministry at Epic Universe, Andrew.
Andrew
I know. I wish. That would have been really funny. They had this on display at the studio tour, too. This statue.
Micah
Yeah.
Eric
Goes real hard.
Andrew
Yeah. I didn't. And I mean, not to state the obvious, but those actors also look like the trio too.
Laura
Yeah. They very intentionally chose people that you could. Oh, go away, Yaxley. Jesus. But they very clearly chose people who could be the trio aged up, like, 20 years.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
You see, I agree with your thoughts on her blood status.
Micah
Yaxley is very mafioso.
Laura
Mm.
Micah
Yes.
Andrew
Anyway, have a good day. In the new Ride Epic universe, you are in one of these. Elevator.
Eric
Oh, yeah, yeah. Cool.
Laura
Honestly, Ron, you should know that that's pretty basic.
Eric
Yeah, that was. That's a pretty obvious suggestion.
Micah
Do we ever learn who made it rain in his office?
Eric
In the books, I assume some form of resistance coming from the disgruntled yeah. Employees. But I mean, have. Have you tried. An umbrella is a very funny line.
Micah
Or just work remote.
Andrew
This was time. Like a.
Eric
Even the. The film doesn't. Oh, there she is. Is her scarf a kitty or she. The collar of.
Andrew
I think it is. Yeah, I forgot about that. That's a.
Eric
It's real cute.
Andrew
Yeah.
Eric
Or it's a fox eating its tail or something.
Andrew
It's gotta be a cat given.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
What we know about her.
Eric
You know, in the book, they research these people for months, at least a month. Their habits, their daily schedule.
Andrew
I forgot about that, too.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
We see this set in Fantastic Beasts, I think. Or at least where Harry was just walking.
Eric
I think. That's right. Propaganda. Mud Bloods are eating the cats. They're eating the dogs. Oh, man. The eyeball.
Andrew
Creepy.
Eric
Really love me some decoy detonators.
Laura
These would be handy to have in real life.
Eric
They're really adorable. It's just a bicorn sound.
Andrew
Fred and George would love to be here for that. Wow, she's leveled up.
Eric
Oh, yeah.
Micah
Trick.
Andrew
Yeah, I guess so.
Micah
It'll work in a bit. Or no. Doesn't he grab it off of her?
Eric
I think so. Yeah.
Micah
That's such a corporate thing to have extra pair of shoes at the office.
Andrew
Do you have extra pair of shoes at the office, Micah?
Micah
There.
Andrew
When Muggles attack. That's the Minalina part.
Eric
There it is.
Andrew
Do you have extra shoes at the office, Micah?
Micah
Yeah, like an extra. I have a pair of sneakers there.
Andrew
Oh, nice.
Eric
I guess I've gone corporate because I have an extra pair of sneakers at the office too. Because usually I'm in these steel toe boots for all the, like, heavy lifting and stuff, but they were annoying me when I was sitting at the desk doing other work. And so I have these, like, loafers that are now under the desk. So, yeah, super corporate right now. A manager in over his head. Okay.
Laura
It's like, nothing to see here.
Eric
I love that he doesn't at first remember that. That's him.
Andrew
Yeah. That's because Ron's dumb. Remember, everybody?
Eric
Well, he's probably had a lot going on.
Andrew
That's sarcasm. They do him dirty. Ron, a very smart character.
Laura
That's right.
Micah
There's also a deleted scene with Arthur where I can't remember which one of them, but it's either Harry or Ron, warn him that his family is being.
Eric
Your family's being watched.
Micah
Yeah.
Eric
And Arthur, like, detests the man who's telling him the info. Like, whoever it is, I think. And so it, like, doesn't go well. Like he sees it as a threat or something instead of the warning that it is. It's real uncomfortable in a. In a really good way.
Micah
It.
Andrew
I love the look of the Patronuses.
Eric
They're keeping the dementors at bay. It's a cool shot.
Micah
Oh,
Eric
I mean, replace mud blood with any minority group or Muggle born with any minority group and replace wand with diploma citizenship, you know, passport, anything. And you have a perfect metaphor for pretty much everything that's going on under fascism. The wand.
Micah
The irony of course too is that Umbridge is a half blood herself.
Eric
Right?
Micah
Yeah.
Eric
Somebody call her a fake witch.
Andrew
Well, and don't get us started on some riddle.
Eric
Oh yeah, get that Hermione. Toss it. I love how Ron's just completely adopted his wife and kids and family. Love it, man. They have a thing against Harry Potter. They've been trying to get his soul for years. Woo. I wonder what happy memory Harry used just then
Andrew
snogging Jenny earlier.
Eric
Oh yeah. Zip me up. Oh hell yeah. And now we're normally look like us.
Laura
Like don't just act normal.
Andrew
I like how Ron's poly juice lasts the longest.
Eric
Yeah. For dramatic effect.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
This is funny.
Micah
Yeah.
Eric
Oh my God.
Andrew
So if that were me in that moment, I would just immediately duck out before she reopened her eyes.
Eric
Mary,
Andrew
We need to do a whole episode around guy.
Eric
Yeah, yeah, I want to. I want to get that guy on the pod as Harry. As Harry Potter.
Andrew
No, I want to do a whole episode on like, like should the wife, should that guy be mad at his wife?
Eric
Or like like fake wizarding problems of the world. Yeah.
Micah
Also, come on, Yaxley. He's doing his best Michael Myers approach here.
Laura
He really is.
Micah
Yeah. You should be running, bro.
Eric
There you go. Well, he's been impaired by a. Whatever jinx they hit him with earlier. Oh.
Andrew
Ruh. Ro.
Eric
I wonder what the purpose of those bars on the fireplaces could possibly be.
Laura
Isn't this the last scene they filmed?
Andrew
Was it?
Laura
Oh, I thought I remembered this whole jumping into the fireplace being the final scene they filmed.
Andrew
What was the last scene filmed for the Harry Potter movie?
Micah
It's possible.
Andrew
Yeah, you're right.
Eric
Wow.
Micah
And the movie was filmed altogether. Right. Like they were jumping from scenes in part one to part two and back to part one.
Andrew
And that, you know, that was another advantage for Warner Brothers. By filming both at the same time, you're saving money completely separately.
Eric
Yeah, yeah. The coordination of it all must have been insane.
Micah
All right, we can all take a nap. We're going to be Camping for a while.
Andrew
Yeah, Fun, fun facts. Do you all remember when the trailer came out for Deathly Hallows Part 1 or one of them came out. Hermione put this is going to happen a little later. But Hermione has blood on her hands. In the movie. But in the trailer. Yes, they removed the blood on her hands to get the trailer rating down to a more family friendly. I do how we caught that, but I'll point out the shot once we get to it.
Eric
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's when they're setting up the enchantations or enchantments.
Andrew
Yeah, no, maybe when the Death Eaters show up, I don't know.
Laura
Yeah, no, I think it's about to be here in the next minute or so.
Eric
Uh huh. Dig those suspenders. Gryffindor color. This wound looks grievous.
Micah
One of the things that gets left out here too is that Harry is concerned for Creature because her old place was exposed.
Eric
Yeah.
Micah
And that's of course another thing left out is the relationship that they seem to build with each other.
Eric
They have a real understanding.
Andrew
This right here, this is the. Where they hid the blood.
Eric
Oh yeah, A Perkins's tent in the bag of tricks. Tile tent.
Andrew
It's shooting practice.
Eric
Well, I appreciate that. The limited screen time that Creature had, he was able to say no matter how hard Creature tried to destroy it, it would not break. Which really sets up this moment.
Andrew
Yeah,
Eric
that locket's like, you freaking kids. When I get you, I'm get you
Andrew
see it already getting to Ron. Of course Ron doesn't get a shot.
Eric
No, That moment when you only know three spells. Have you tried to expel the Armissary?
Andrew
Good point.
Eric
Wow. Of course it bothers.
Micah
It should.
Laura
Harry's just like, bitch.
Andrew
I wanted him to think for himself, to show him everything too. Oh. So, I mean, we'll get to this when we do chapter by chapter. So what was the radio show called?
Eric
Potter Watch or Potter Watch.
Andrew
Yeah, People were like.
Micah
Or.
Andrew
Well, I don't know if anybody on the mugglecast panel, but some people I think on the leaky panel were like, oh, this is a nod to the Harry Potter podcast. I just don't believe that personally.
Eric
Yeah, I go back and forth. It felt, it felt that way while reading it for the first time.
Andrew
Yeah.
Eric
But it's also like, yeah.
Laura
Oh, go ahead.
Eric
Nothing exists in a vacuum. So like, whereas I think the one time is it Professor Bins or Slughorn calls Ron Rupert? I don't think that would exist without Rupert Grint being cast as Ron, Like,
Andrew
I agree with that.
Eric
So, like, it's. It's impossible maybe to trace the origins because, you know, 2007, when the book was released, 2005, when the podcast started and got big. You just never know whether the idea of a radio show for people keeping in contact in book seven was an original idea or, well, whether it didn't, in fact, inspire it.
Micah
Perhaps a wand.
Eric
Yeah, right.
Andrew
Welcome to Mugglecast, episode 100.
Laura
Please be aware that this episode contains several spoilers.
Eric
Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Well, hi there, everybody. This is Billy Joe. That there. Emma Watson's a fine lady. Oh,
Andrew
Ryan's like, I wish you would say that to me.
Eric
Yeah, right. Cursed object. The maturity there that Hermione shows. They don't need to say sorry. Harry is sorry. He doesn't need to say it. And she understands why. Real smart, all wordless. Snape as Hogwarts it.
Andrew
There's no chance that Hedwig will die in the final book. That's just impossible.
Micah
It is actually cool to hear the radio because I don't think when I was watching it on TV without closed captions, you get the level of insight you do when there are closed captions.
Andrew
Oh, good point.
Eric
Yeah. There's a lot of craft that went into, you know, the specific scenes and moments. You know what? I like this moment of the Snatchers and Scabior and all this crap.
Andrew
Yeah, no, it's intense.
Eric
It's got charisma.
Andrew
This reminds you of like, you know, when Harry's wearing the invisibility cloak and trying to avoid.
Laura
Yeah. The only thing I would call out here is that I think it's out of character for Hermione to be applying perfume while they are out camping and looking for Horcruxes. I understand they needed a mechanism to make the scene work, but they should have found something else.
Andrew
She should have farted and then they would find her that way.
Laura
Well, yeah, she. I mean, we all fart, so she definitely had to do that at some point.
Andrew
And that would make sense while you're camping. Sorry about that, Hermione. I was feeling gassy. Sorry. This is disgusting. He could spell.
Laura
Harry's just like, we'll leave him. Fine.
Andrew
Oh, look at that couple.
Micah
What were they doing in the woods?
Laura
Smelling Hermione's perfume, apparently.
Andrew
Man, Ron looks terrible. Poor ron. I wonder if any of these names are, like, crew members. I don't know. I don't know. Is it. Is it cool to be a dead. I guess so, yeah, that'd be cool.
Laura
But I also Wonder.
Eric
Oh, my God.
Andrew
Yeah, that'd be cool. Says the true crime lover.
Laura
Yeah, but I also wonder if these were actually names dropped in the book, too. Because we know Ron was listening to the radio in the book, so.
Andrew
Yeah, I don't even know where that would be. In here.
Micah
Wow.
Andrew
Just found a folded page in my copy of Deathly Hallows. Glad I did that. God knows how long ago.
Micah
It.
Andrew
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
Laura
Hermione has adhd.
Andrew
Ron's had enough of this.
Eric
We should have brought a stylist. We all look miserable.
Andrew
I mean,
Eric
But Ron, it's about the journey.
Andrew
It's about the journey, man, not the destination. And it's ruining you.
Eric
What you believe is Hermione's misery here. Like, she wants their friendship not to snap because too much would be lost
Micah
if it was
Andrew
Akio Horcrux off his neck.
Eric
This is an incredible trailer shot. Fight.
Andrew
Fight. So we're getting the dance scene soon, right? That's about to come up.
Eric
Yep.
Andrew
Man, that was, like, shocking at the time, right?
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
Just like this normal Muggle song in a movie. I love the song, too. Oh, Children.
Micah
Nick Cave.
Andrew
Nick Cave. I listened to that a lot after it came out.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
In the movie, I mean.
Eric
Yeah. They tried multiple songs. A lot of artists. Yeah.
Laura
Oh, I didn't realize that Yates said
Eric
that in an interview. Yeah.
Laura
There is something haunting about that song that works.
Andrew
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Eric
Well, in the characterization, I think people, again, try and put. Oh, it's always Steve Kloves trying to get Harry and Hermione together. But, like, the dance is not romantic. The dance is. We're devastated and have lost so much, but need to keep going, you know, as friends.
Laura
Yeah.
Eric
Yeah.
Laura
I also felt like the dance scene posed the question, though, Right. Of, like, what if these two actually got together? But they have. There's, like, a moment of reckoning where it's like, I think they both realize it, and then I believe she walks away, essentially.
Eric
Yeah. I think that's.
Andrew
So I found some quotes from the music supervisor. Maybe I'll save them until we actually get to.
Eric
Oh, that'd be cool.
Andrew
Yeah. Some other artists, they were considering,
Eric
Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen. This would be a great place to put the Harry Potter song that. Bruce Springsteen.
Andrew
Right.
Eric
Finally. Yeah. Now, that has not yet been released anywhere, right?
Andrew
Yeah, it has. It leaked, like, 10 years ago, and it came out officially through a Bruce movie five, six years ago. It got released again on tracks two. Now, Take album.
Eric
I've yet to listen to it. There's Got to be a bonus that we do listening to the Bruce Springsteen Harry Potter song. That'd be cool.
Andrew
I have a theory. His kids used Muggle. Net or listen to mugglecast. That's my headcanon.
Laura
So you can't believe that Potter watch might have been a subtle nod to the podcast, but you believe that Andrew's man.
Andrew
No, because every Harry Potter fan went to Mugglemat.
Eric
That was just a fact. That's the thing. No, it's true. Like, whenever you.
Laura
When.
Eric
Whenever you hear that, whenever you hear the British actors, be like, I wasn't going to take this role, but my grandchildren said that you absolutely have to. Like, you know, those grandkids were checking out the COS forums and have you
Andrew
ever met a person who was a Harry Potter fan back in, like, 05 through 07 who didn't know of Muggle that.
Eric
Yeah,
Laura
I mean, a lot of people did, but I def. I mean, but I've definitely met people who weren't involved in, like, the Internet fandom. Like that.
Eric
True.
Andrew
Okay, so now we're getting to the song. Let's enjoy it for a minute and then I'll read the quotes. Honestly, I ship them right now. Watching this scene,
Eric
I don't think it's romantic. I just think it's. Let's have a human moment.
Andrew
Who dances with their friend like this? I mean, okay, it's kind of fun and cute. So maybe that's why they need to have some fun.
Eric
Right now, as we're watching this, I'm. I have to, like, choreograph a dance with my mom for the wedding that's coming up, and it'll probably be.
Andrew
You're gonna do this one.
Eric
It. Well, it'll. Not the song, but it'll probably be as silly as this of like, random twirls and stuff. Unless I can find somebody to. They're having fun. You just like to see it is fun.
Andrew
Okay, I take it back. It started kind of almost looking romantic.
Micah
Well, it ends a little romantic, too.
Andrew
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Eric
What's the unspoken.
Andrew
Oh.
Eric
Oh, no. They hug.
Andrew
Oh, extended embrace.
Laura
And then there's this moment, the pull away. It's like, will. Will they? Won't they? And then she's like, nah, I want my ginger back.
Micah
Oh, my ginger snap.
Eric
What's their shared loss between them?
Andrew
I'm sorry, that's. Was there no better take? That was bad acting. So the music supervisor said we talked a lot about some of the great old soul songs, songs from James Carr and Otis Redding. That was initially what David Yates was after. But they're too much of the Muggle world. It's too human. Such as bands like Oasis and Radiohead. To a certain degree. As much as I love Radiohead, I think it would have been too obvious. Yeah. It had to be a song like. Or an artist that was, like, not too popular because I think that would take you out of the moment. So.
Micah
Right. The Horcrux will make up for all of that for those Harry Hermione shippers.
Eric
Right. I appreciate how hard the Horcrux scene goes because it's something very adult and something very true of, like, Ron's inner nightmare. It's one of my favorite parts because of how bold it is.
Andrew
You found something too dish. So, yeah. Becky, who's watching and listening live right now, shared a interview with Emma Watson when they were promoting this movie. And Emma talks about how they're in that. In the dance scene, there was that kind of will they, won't they? And they're at the stage of their friendship where they're wondering if it could be something more and that they could have very easily kissed that night.
Eric
These craggy rocks.
Andrew
Until Covid.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Everybody was cutting each other's hairs.
Eric
Hair. Not again.
Andrew
Well said, arie.
Micah
Okay.
Andrew
Also, it's winter. I mean, you could cover up more if you wanted to.
Eric
Yeah. There's always more layers.
Andrew
Very incognito.
Eric
A blue bottle bell flame charm.
Andrew
Or just like, you know, those winter masks that cover your entire face, Basically,
Eric
those are game changers.
Andrew
Wouldn't look. Wouldn't look too out of the ordinary during the winter.
Eric
You know, since we're talking about, you know, Covid times and stuff. I remember like, wearing a mask, but in the winter and how. Just a normal mask, like a cloth mask, even how much warmer your face stays.
Laura
Sucks in the summer, though.
Micah
What is funny about that comment is that they do use Polyjuice Potion in the books.
Eric
Again, they're just diligent about.
Micah
Yeah,
Eric
that is funny.
Andrew
But I mean, I so agree with Harry's point here. Like, if he's visiting his. His parents and his. Where he.
Eric
General audiences need to see, it's him. Not. Why are we watching this stranger.
Andrew
It hits differently. Yeah, exactly.
Laura
Visually, yes. But this is probably one. Well, this is the. One of the top places Voldemort would expect him to go, so.
Andrew
He's so nostalgic. He. I. I conflate my Dumbledore and Voldemort. Oh, yeah. He's so nostalgic. God, he's so nostalgic.
Laura
You Gotta make those intense, like, guttural, weird screams.
Andrew
He's so nostalgic. There it is.
Eric
Aw. Little flower wreath. Now, she pulled that out of nothing or.
Andrew
I know, right? Saved some money by not buying breaks.
Eric
Gantt's Law. Merry Christmas, Harry.
Andrew
It's not a happy Christmas. It's just a merry Christmas.
Eric
Where's my John Williams music?
Micah
This was a really beautiful moment.
Eric
So it's ruined by a creepy old lady.
Andrew
Come this way,
Eric
Jarring her mind.
Micah
You should know what that is.
Eric
Yeah, it's her hero. You wrote the most famous book in the wizarding world. She might have this sword. No, but she's got a snake. And the room next door is a brightly colored nursery.
Andrew
Does somebody have something, like beeping in the background?
Laura
I don't hear anything.
Micah
What'd you say?
Andrew
Somebody got, like, a beeping noise in the background in their room or something?
Micah
I have a ceiling fan, but usually doesn't get picked up.
Andrew
Oh, maybe that's what I'm hearing.
Eric
Or did you just text us?
Micah
I don't think she meant to text us. I think it's spammed.
Andrew
No, she meant to say.
Eric
I meant.
Micah
Oh, okay.
Eric
This is.
Andrew
Bam.
Eric
No one will ever see. No one will ever see what this message says. But it came at the weirdest possible.
Andrew
Laura sent us one of those disgusting chain messages around holidays.
Eric
This is the weirdest thing to be reading while going through this scene.
Andrew
Let's just say my comment about the fart was tame compared to this text message.
Eric
It's the weirdest moment of the movie, though. It. It, like, something about it, like, obviously it's similar in the books. Ish. But the fact that she's not talking. Cause I'm pretty sure Bathilda, like, has a whole conversation with them in the books and in the movie. It's just, here's this creepy woman. There's something really creepy with her, obviously. And here. Now here's a snake.
Laura
Yeah, well, don't forget there's Dumbledore's lover in that picture frame.
Eric
Yeah,
Laura
before he became Johnny Depp and then before he became Mads Mikkelsen.
Eric
Love Mads Mikkelsen.
Andrew
The many looks of Grindelwald.
Micah
And we get another version of him later on in this movie, right?
Laura
Yeah, that's true.
Eric
Yeah.
Micah
That actor actually just passed old Grindelwald. Michael Byrne.
Eric
Huh. I'll be right back.
Andrew
Rita. Rita.
Eric
Rita.
Micah
So they. She did actually have to film for Deathly Hallows. Maybe, maybe not. They probably could have used her from Goblet of Fire.
Andrew
Yeah, possibly.
Eric
Ooh.
Micah
Nagini can sense it. Ariana. Yeah. Yeah.
Andrew
Ugh, this is so creepy. This is a children's series. I don't think so. Haters.
Laura
I like how Harry's going full, like, lion tamer.
Andrew
Yeah.
Laura
Chair you want, Man. Why does Bathilda have a crib?
Andrew
Is it the neighboring house?
Laura
Maybe?
Micah
It must be.
Andrew
Yeah, because it's like it. Because it's bright and looks so different.
Micah
And they must be out for the holidays.
Eric
Good thing.
Andrew
Otherwise that'd be another dead baby. Not another dead baby, but. And be a dead baby, Lily wouldn't be there to save that one.
Eric
You know what I mean?
Andrew
See, this is why I don't live. I don't have any neighbors attached to.
Micah
To my home, just in case.
Andrew
Okay. In case a Nagini comes flying through. Yeah, you never know.
Laura
Yeah. There are pros and cons to having neighbors close.
Andrew
I'm just kidding.
Laura
I mean, I would say, like, it's probably a 50. 50 split of pros and cons.
Andrew
Oh, yeah.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Laura, you just got some new neighbors, right?
Laura
Yeah, Yeah, I did.
Andrew
Should ask them if they have any snakes.
Laura
I don't think they do. They have a young child. I know that because I hear them running around upstairs. I don't care. It actually makes me feel better about podcasting because at first, when I realized they had a young kid moving in, I was like, oh, man, when we podcast, like, I don't want to disturb the child, you know? But then, like, the kid's honestly kind of noisy, so I was like, oh, okay. I'm not worried now.
Andrew
You're. You're mutually making.
Laura
Yes, exactly.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
No, that's. I. I hear.
Laura
Dumbledore's lover.
Andrew
Bow chicka wow.
Laura
Hey. They had a summer romance for the ages.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
Yeah. Getting back to that crib real quick, Rachel said it looks so similar to Harry's crib scenes in coloring. I agree. I think that was very intentional.
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
Would be my guess.
Eric
I think it is the neighbor next door because the houses were close together. So, Laura, what are the pros of having neighbors so close, um, that they
Laura
keep an eye out for each other? I have pretty good relationships with my neighbors, and so, like, if I'm at a town, for example, and I get a package or something, I've got a couple of neighbors that'll just, like, pick it up for me and hold onto it till I get home.
Eric
That makes sense.
Andrew
We have, like, Eric's still looking for pros.
Laura
We have little text chains where we, like, give each other heads up if stuff's Going on to be aware of.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
What is with this mirror?
Eric
Where'd he get it? That foggy glass reminds me of the Hogshead when nothing is properly clean.
Micah
You watch her mouth.
Eric
His favorite place line directly from the book.
Micah
I know. They watch their mouths too.
Eric
Oh yeah, Blasphemy. Think of all the hard work Severus Snape is putting into this. Yeah. The Snatchers got Harry Potter. They just had to lure him with a Patronus.
Andrew
And we've said this like with the first movie too. So when did this movie come out? 2011 or 1011. Yeah, so it's 16 years old. You said that earlier, Eric. I think.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
These movies just in terms of like the CGI and all that hold up really well. Like all the. If this was released today, I. This looks like it could have been released today is what I'm trying to say.
Laura
Yeah, yeah.
Eric
It was used sparingly and going back
Andrew
to movie one, it looks great.
Eric
Yeah, yeah, I agree.
Andrew
And I feel like that's part of the reason some people are annoyed that they're quote unquote rebooting Harry Potter through TV shows. Because they're like they, they've held up so well. They're so fresh in our brains because maybe they run non stop on television that people like, oh, why are you rebooting it already? It's not already. It's been 25 years since the first movie came out and by the time book seven is adapted, it's going to be 25 years since. Since these movies came out. So I don't know, I think it's almost a compliment when people say, why is it being rebooted already? Because I think people just think it's feels like it was yesterday.
Eric
Well, it's just an opportunity to show more magic too. Like I, I really want there to be even tiny elements of magic.
Andrew
Ow.
Laura
Ow.
Eric
In every episode. What the hell was that? Always skimming down. I think you guys are half of one second ahead of me. So I didn't see him stripping when Andrew was screaming.
Micah
This looks very much like the Forbidden Forest set. Yeah, yeah, because I was reading that. I guess it's not a surprise that they use a water tank for this scene. He's not actually getting into a frozen lake somewhere in a forest.
Andrew
Yeah, I would say that's potentially dangerous. Have you all ever done a cold plunge before?
Laura
No.
Micah
No.
Laura
Have you? No.
Andrew
No. It's scary.
Eric
There are some.
Andrew
There's health benefits though.
Eric
Health benefits.
Andrew
Probably not this cold.
Eric
There's going to be the next.
Laura
Is that A real thing though? Or is that just a thing people say?
Andrew
Okay, no, no, seriously? Yeah, it's good for the body.
Eric
Even. Even when showering, if you take like 60 seconds at the end and just sit in very freezing cold. You know the coldest your shower gets, it improves your heart rate and circulation.
Micah
Lymphatic flow.
Andrew
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Lymphatic flow, whatever that is.
Eric
Now this, this is cool. This moment in this movie might be my favorite because it's terrifying. Like the. The Horcrux not letting him touch the thing that's gonna kill it and fighting like hell. Because the first time we see the locket really move on its own or do anything.
Andrew
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, that was me.
Eric
Ron, don't look down. It's cold.
Laura
Ow. Ow.
Andrew
Well, don't worry. We're about to destroy it. Because we're bros, bro.
Micah
For an ice bath. That's why I came back.
Andrew
Yeah, I'm doing the ice bucket challenge.
Laura
I was trying to get a preview of Equus on Broadway.
Eric
Oh, my God.
Micah
On three,
Eric
not before.
Micah
Whoa.
Andrew
Get it. You got this. Come on, do it for Hermione. Oh, yikes. Gossip queen. This is brutal. Harry's got a better butt than you do. The Phantom had a. Had feelings about that. And, and that they're naked too. I mean, that was a choice. They are yassified, said Rachel.
Laura
That's true. I think it does make it hit harder in the movie because in the book, aren't they just little tiny figures that come out of the locket?
Eric
It's not this grandiose Polly Pocket kind of thing. Yeah, yeah.
Laura
Carly, when my 13 year old watched this with me, he said it was like AI, Harry and Hermione. Yeah, kind of.
Micah
I'm pretty sure they're body doubles.
Andrew
You think so? It's all cgi.
Eric
Like.
Laura
Yeah, I thought they had to like be painted in silver to film the scene. I thought I read that somewhere.
Andrew
Oh, my God.
Eric
To make the light catch better.
Laura
Hell yeah, Hermione. Bring on that feminine rage.
Eric
Yeah.
Laura
Stupid boys. Hey.
Micah
Oh, yeah.
Andrew
She grabs the sword of Gryffindor, cuts off his head.
Eric
Yeah.
Micah
So it says, because the scene required Radcliffe and Watson to appear topless and covered in silver paint, the actors used body and stunt doubles for the most intense physical and intimate aspects of the illusion to keep the set comfortable and professional.
Andrew
Ah. But why wasn't it just cgi? That just surprises me. That seems. I mean, good, I guess. What am I complaining about? Yeah, good question.
Eric
I love that it appears that because Ron and Harry are okay, right now it's like, it appears that they were doing things, like, behind her back. They absolutely weren't. But, like, she's just like, huh.
Andrew
I spoke to him. Aw. Pretty cool, right? It's my own invention. Pretty brilliant, if I do say so myself.
Eric
I'm pretty sure there's like a. Almost like a lyric video or a music video about, like, tiny ball of light. And it's a super cut of Deathly Hallows. And it's like Ron just telling this story and it's very, like, super romantic. Played at the 2011 Oscars.
Andrew
What are you talking about?
Eric
This video, tiny Ball of Light,
Micah
I'm
Eric
going to link to it in the Discord.
Andrew
Yeah, she was definitely very touched by that. Ron.
Eric
Come on,
Micah
You darn.
Andrew
Right this way.
Micah
Oh,
Andrew
hey.
Micah
Now.
Laura
That.
Andrew
It's the name of this book and movie, what does it mean? This has to be one of the most tattooed symbols from the Harry Potter series. Most tattooed. Anything from the Harry Potter series.
Eric
Right next to this one.
Andrew
The Muggle cast mic bolts.
Eric
Yeah.
Laura
Yeah, I think probably. I mean, I know a lot of people got dark marks, too.
Andrew
Kind of related. I met somebody recently. You would never guess. This person was a huge Harry Potter fan, but he had the Deathly Hallows and it says always. Do I have this right? And then three of his friends have after all this time. So they purposely got like matching tattoos almost that sort of like, okay, you'll be after.
Eric
I'll be all.
Andrew
No, not like that. No, no. The rest of them have. After all this time, I guess. And he has always, for some reason.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
Another door with a name.
Micah
Person's name, I think these are also at the studio tour, the dirigible Plums. Do you remember that at all, Andrew?
Andrew
That's cool. I can't say I do, no. But they always, like, add and remove stuff.
Micah
True, true.
Andrew
Another home in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Sam, who was a recent guest on the show and is listening live, said, I've got a Deathly Hallows mark. Can confirm it's popular.
Micah
That should have been the first flag to get the out of there.
Eric
Yeah, We're about to have that bit of animated genius with the story of the Deathly Hallows.
Andrew
I have a breaking news to report. I've been informed via text message. Again, we're recording on 4th of July. Apparently Beyonce has released a new single this today.
Eric
Ah, Morning Dew.
Andrew
I'm going to listen to it while we watch this scene.
Laura
I thought you were going to say Mitch McConnell died, but
Andrew
you know, Fourth of July, historically has been. I'm not going to say it.
Eric
Not kind to American politicians.
Andrew
Not kind to American presidents. Yeah.
Micah
I love the quibblers in the background.
Eric
Yeah. Guy's a fan of his own work.
Micah
I agree. This.
Andrew
Oh, my God. This new Beyonce song is her doing. Oh, children. This is crazy coincidence.
Eric
Amazing.
Micah
But Eric, I agree with you. This adaptation of the Tale of the Three Brothers and the way that it was also included. It didn't include it exactly. But in Hogwarts Legacy, the. The version of it was really, really well done. Do you know what I'm talking about? Do you remember that from the video game?
Eric
I'm trying to remember it in the video game. I know in the. In the Lego game.
Micah
The Lego game. Full on. Yeah, yeah. It was very cool. But in Hogwarts Legacy, there was a version.
Laura
Yeah, it was like the third task or something you had to do. And the animation, because it was one of the old headmasters who told you a story and you were transported there. I thought that was one of the coolest sequences of the game.
Andrew
That does sound very cool.
Eric
I'm also remembering the first Mugglecast T shirts we did with Patreon where it was like the three of us, like Micah, Andrew and myself on the bridge.
Andrew
Oh, yeah.
Eric
And the guy was holding up the ipod. And Steph Falcos designed it to look like. And be reminiscent of this art style.
Andrew
Speaking of stuff that's held up well, I mean, you know, this sequence is just fantastic.
Eric
There's just nothing like this in any of the other films.
Andrew
I would like to hear the making of this scene. Like, what inspired this artistic style and whatnot. Yeah, it looks like it's like pulled out of a book almost. I love in a movie when they do kind of like an unexpected visual sequence like that. Just like is so unlike the rest of the movie. I'm thinking particularly of Pixar movies. Inside out had one of these types of sequences. But the Toy Story movies, when they do like the. The kids imagining places.
Eric
Yeah, yeah.
Andrew
So good. So different. I saw a post on social media, somebody was like, they should do Toy Story like mini shorts that are just like the playtime imagination. Playtime.
Eric
I love the passing down the lineage of the invisibility cloak. It's real cool. It's okay.
Andrew
Let me do this so you and viewers can understand what this all means. Okay, here we go. I got to do this carefully because somebody might turn this into a tattoo.
Micah
How many times do you think you had to draw it?
Andrew
Good question.
Micah
I feel like he got the first Part down, no problem.
Andrew
Yeah, that's an easy start. It's a straight line but then doing the angles.
Micah
Oof.
Eric
Yeah. It has to be equilateral. Triangle now.
Micah
Oh no, he's going for the resurrection stone.
Eric
Oh, circle.
Micah
Well done.
Andrew
Now this is the part where it gets tricky. You gotta do straight but at an angle. Make it fit nicely around the circle.
Micah
I bet somebody else did it. And all he had to do was finish the triangle.
Andrew
Imagine like where's that little piece of parchment?
Micah
Oh, you know, that's a good question.
Andrew
I would go for some big money.
Eric
Betray. Sivan's has it in his living room.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
I got a pen and paper. I'll put pen to paper right now, see if I can do it.
Laura
I bet I can.
Andrew
Oh no, I screwed it up. It's very Corpse Bride that animation sequence. Yeah, I agree, Rachel. Wow. Sam has a huge deathly Hallows tattoo on her back. Oh my gosh.
Laura
Oh, that's incredible. Look at that.
Andrew
It's got so much. It's got fox that the call is snitch. Lightning bolt time turn.
Laura
That's beautiful.
Andrew
Marauder's map prints. Yeah, the wax seal I saw him was wow, Sam.
Micah
You know. Don't let him say it.
Andrew
You.
Eric
Not my hairy flying death eaters. This place was already messed up. Okay, now they're.
Andrew
I know this is going to delay the next release of the Quibbler.
Eric
Nothing a good Reparo Maxima can't cure. Oh no. Reuse the location, did ya? We were waiting here for three weeks for you to come snatch em.
Andrew
We're called snatches after all.
Eric
Yeah, Snatch em. This is probably my favorite movie poster next to the one of Hogwarts burning. But them just on the run.
Andrew
Running.
Eric
Yeah.
Micah
I feel like they could have taken them if they stood and fought.
Eric
Not with Gray back there. He likes to chew his feet.
Andrew
And how many are there total? 12. 12? It's got to be 12 or 7y.
Eric
Everyone's a master of non verbal spells.
Andrew
This was cool.
Laura
Of course.
Andrew
It all comes back to big D, baby.
Micah
Now he doesn't murder Grindelwald in the movie, but he does in the book, right?
Eric
Yes.
Laura
Yeah, yeah.
Eric
Grindelwald is still out there in the movie. But not the other one.
Andrew
That's funny. Vernon dudley. Emma
Micah
penelope.
Andrew
Ew, what a creep.
Micah
It.
Andrew
Back where we began. Man, the Malfoys have a nice house.
Eric
Wish I could sell.
Andrew
That's how they did it for cheap.
Micah
Where are the peacocks?
Andrew
I don't see any details. Where are the peacocks?
Micah
They could have CGI'd them in.
Laura
Yeah.
Micah
I do like how you brought that up, though, Andrew, that the movie is more or less ending where it started and that they decided to cut it there.
Eric
Yeah.
Laura
It was a good place to cut it.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Yeah. I mean, remember too, like, did we know going into the movie where they would end part one? It's hard to remember.
Micah
Speculated on it.
Andrew
I'm sure we did. But that was an important question, too, because it's like, how. What climax do you end on?
Eric
Right?
Andrew
Or what depressing note do you end on in this case?
Eric
This is real good stuff. Between Lucius and Draco here explaining kind of the precarious situation that their family is in. It's good to see them get to act together. Rarely do.
Micah
Yeah.
Laura
Helena Bonham Carter really brings Bellatrix to life. I love her.
Andrew
I mean, good luck casting that role. That's going to be impossible.
Laura
Those are going to be big shoes to fill.
Andrew
Honestly. Just get her again. Lady Gaga for Bellatrix. She could do it. She's a weird one.
Eric
Luna.
Andrew
Luna. Don't say my name out loud.
Eric
How many extra lights do you think Ron saved up just for this instance? This is intense.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
I don't like it,
Eric
Really. Olamander, you've tried everything.
Andrew
Nice to see him, though. They all could have taken this piece of crap.
Laura
I'm gonna call him Max. That, though. We really need to see Pettigrew strangle himself in the show.
Eric
Oh, yeah.
Andrew
Oh, my gosh. Yeah.
Micah
So I'm reading here that the sequence was originally much longer and more violent, but filmmakers had to trim it down in the editing room to avoid an R rating for the film.
Laura
Wow.
Micah
Do you think that's true?
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
What's the source? Who said it?
Micah
Reddit.
Andrew
I mean.
Eric
Well, no, there are contemporary actor interviews. I think that Helena and Emma talked about it.
Andrew
Yeah. I think one of the big challenges across the series has always been making it suitable for children because, you know. And they're going to have that issue with the TV show, too.
Eric
Also, Dobby lived here for many years. He knows the ins and outs.
Micah
I agree, Laura. I'm wondering, though, too, speaking of our ratings, you can't have somebody strangling themselves and keeping it PG 13.
Laura
Yeah, but it's also. I mean, it's HBO. Do they. Are they gonna have the same concerns about ratings?
Eric
No, it's not MPAA at all.
Andrew
I disagree, though, because they still want to make it suitable for children to watch. This isn't gonna be like Game of Thrones where we're seeing incest and all Kinds of crazy stuff.
Laura
But I mean, I think that they can still be book accurate because the books get really dark. I mean, there's no getting around it.
Micah
Agree.
Andrew
I actually think strangling yourself isn't like that bad for.
Laura
I mean it for a television movie. It depends on the shot. Yeah, exactly.
Eric
I mean, I think the thing of it is that there's terror in Pettigrew's eyes. Like he and Harry Lockeyes as it happens. It's like kind of.
Andrew
I guess.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
What I'm saying is that doesn't seem like that inappropriate for children to watch compared to other things.
Eric
Right,
Micah
right.
Andrew
I. I agree.
Micah
I think by the time we get to Deathly Hallows, there are things that they can do with them being older that wouldn't be appropriate for Sorcerer's Stone or Philosopher's Stone. Sorry. And of course that hair is so important. The fact that they took the time to show it slowly dropping onto Hermione.
Laura
More Polyjuice Potions.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew
Woohoo.
Eric
Not in this movie. Love it.
Andrew
Hit the button.
Eric
Oh yeah. What, was he gonna touch it or is he gonna hold his hand over it? What's. Is that where Harry just lost the allegiance of the Elder Wand? Or isn't that even a part of this movie?
Andrew
Yeah.
Laura
So heartbreaking.
Andrew
I know.
Laura
I still get teary eyed every time I see this part. I'm just like, oh, hits me right in the feels.
Andrew
Oh yeah. The beach scene's just.
Laura
Yeah.
Andrew
Remember all the paparazzi photos that came out when they were filming that? The beach scene.
Micah
And doesn't this location still to this day have people dropping socks?
Andrew
I think so.
Eric
I think that's right. They're like, it's a real. It's hazardous to the wildlife. Stop doing it. Oh,
Andrew
Don't worry, Dobby. Molly'll avenge your death.
Laura
Not my house elf. You.
Eric
Yeah.
Andrew
Aw.
Eric
I was finally gonna get some help around the. Didn't he. Well, didn't he fix this?
Laura
Oh, this is brutal.
Andrew
Sorry to ruin your Fourth of July, Laura,
Laura
by making me watch Dobby again die again.
Eric
You know, not Mitch McConnell, but such a beautiful place.
Andrew
Don't want to edit this.
Eric
This is the way to. This is the way to spend 4th of July though, with friends. Even over, you know, Riverside or whatever. I'm glad that we're doing this. Good start to the.
Micah
There.
Eric
He could be sleeping.
Andrew
Oh, he's sleeping. How about a Dobby popcorn bucket? Just Dobby's head. A sock. A sock of popcorn Popcorn bucket.
Eric
That's just a Christmas stocking.
Laura
Yeah,
Andrew
Well, Dang we still have so much to do. Good thing. We have a second half to still get stuff done in.
Micah
And we're still going to get at least one more close romantic moment before the end of this film. Potential romantic moment.
Andrew
They end up in that beach house at the beginning of the next movie, right?
Micah
Yeah, yeah.
Eric
To regroup.
Andrew
How do you guys feel about them basically ending on. On this for part one?
Micah
Well. Well, there's one more scene.
Andrew
Yeah, No, I know, but still, like, so sad.
Eric
I think. I think tonally it's perfect because the book. The book is really about loss. And I like that the film feels like, what have we accomplished? What have we lost along the way?
Andrew
I'm just. I guess where I'm considering. What I'm considering is like leaving the movie theater having just seen that. And this is quick. This isn't.
Eric
Yeah, but it's kind of shiny.
Laura
It sets up for the next part, though.
Andrew
Yeah, no, I know, I know.
Laura
It's like our heroes are down and out. What are they going to do?
Eric
Dumbledore's tomb came from ikea.
Andrew
It is very simple.
Micah
Here's this romantic moment.
Laura
He's still in really good shape.
Andrew
God, Micah.
Eric
Perfectly preserved.
Micah
I mean, he's a little close, isn't he? He could just take the wand and go.
Eric
He just wants to gloat.
Micah
Let me sniff him.
Andrew
Oh, maybe Voldemort's a little gay, too.
Eric
Maybe it's a spectrum.
Laura
Well, you just missed Pride Month.
Micah
Voldemort, his wand is about to erupt.
Andrew
I do love this ending music.
Eric
Yeah, it's cool as hell. Jimmy Fingernail.
Micah
Alexandra Desplat. Right?
Eric
Yeah. This is really the. Oh, shit moment. It's the unbeatable wand. It's actually quiet.
Andrew
There we go. Deathly Hallows, Part 1.
Eric
Harry Potter will return.
Laura
Yeah, I really do. I. I love that they did not include any Voldemort sound effects in that because if they had ended this movie with, I would have been so angry.
Andrew
Oh, well, I mean, I'm so glad those do exist in part two, because, again, just the fandom had a field day with all that.
Laura
Have you ever seen the videos that cover all of the different international language dubs of what Voldemort sounds like? Oh, they're so funny.
Eric
Oh, no.
Micah
Yeah.
Andrew

A key theme: how much the actors have grown into their roles by this film.
Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort: Multiple hosts praise his “quiet intimidation,” but Laura points out some battle scenes are less subtle [14:51].
Adaptation choices like omitting red eyes for Voldemort (for relatability) and the differences in the use of Polyjuice Potion—both in terms of visuals and narrative necessity—are discussed at length.
[67:27] Eric:
“And really Deathly Hallows being split, I think, is the only success story in terms of other book to films adaptations... It didn't go well with Breaking Dawn, Hunger Games, too.” —Andrew [29:37]
