Anya Cain
Hi, I'm Anya, and today we're going.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
To be talking about our executive producer, Lanolyn Q. Smith.
Kevin Greenlee
So pardon us for being self indulgent in this episode. I promise you things will get back to normal after this. It's just that over the last couple weeks, the end of the old year, we lost our executive producer, our dog, Lani, and so we just thought we would take an episode. We're going to try not to cry or be too emotional, but we're going to talk a little bit about her and how she contributed to this program.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
There literally would not be a murder sheet without her. So let's get into it.
Kevin Greenlee
We would not be a Kevin and Anya without her.
Kevin Greenlee (also identified as an attorney, possibly same as C)
No.
Anya Cain
My name is Anya Cain. I'm a journalist.
Kevin Greenlee (also identified as an attorney, possibly same as C)
And I'm Kevin Greenlee. I'm an attorney.
Anya Cain
And this is the Murder Sheet.
Kevin Greenlee (also identified as an attorney, possibly same as C)
We're a true crime podcast focused on original reporting, interviews, and deep dives into murder cases.
Kevin Greenlee
We're the Murder Sheet.
Anya Cain
And this is Lann.
Kevin Greenlee
Where do you want to start?
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
So, yeah, I think we can. I think we can start by, I guess, from the beginning, you knew her much longer than I knew her.
Kevin Greenlee
Yes. I got Lanny in 2014.
Anya Cain
Where was she from?
Kevin Greenlee
I got her from a no Kill shelter in downtown Indianapolis. And they told me that they had found her wandering in a field in Lafayette, Indiana. And that's kind of odd because Lafayette, as you may or may not know, is really pretty close to Delphi.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah, she was a Delphi dog. She's from that area, at least.
Yes.
Kevin Greenlee
And so I had her and enjoyed her for a few years. She could still be boisterous. And what ended up bringing you and me together, Anya, is one day, there was a real ice storm in Indianapolis, and I still walk the dog, and I'm walking her, and she sees something, maybe a squirrel, maybe a chipmunk, maybe something out of her own fevered imagination. But whatever it is, it's incredibly important that she get to it as soon as possible. And she was, at this point, trotting close to my legs when she sees this. And then she bolts for it. And I end up taking quite a fall on the ice. And I try to brace myself with my free arm, the one that doesn't have the leash, and I end up really pretty much destroying my shoulder.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She badly injured you?
Kevin Greenlee
She badly injured me. Rotator cuff, a couple of other things. I don't remember all the terms, but it was. It was quite a long diagnosis that required some.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Did she look at all ashamed after that happened when you Were screaming in pain.
Kevin Greenlee
I wasn't screaming in pain.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Okay. When you were wincing in pain.
Kevin Greenlee
Because, you know, from living with me, I'm a pretty tough customer.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Oh, yeah, you are. I will say you have a very strong. You have an insane pain tolerance, you know, in terms of he'll be like, in a lot of pain. And then he'll be like, oh, my head feels like it's, you know, going to explode. And you're like, he was acting all normal all day, but. So you didn't scream?
Anya Cain
She. She didn't look at all embarrassed though?
Kevin Greenlee
No, not really, no.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Why would she be? Not her problem.
Kevin Greenlee
It's not her concern. And she just kind of looked at me like, annoyed, like, let's go get.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Can we get the squirrel, please? What are we doing?
Kevin Greenlee
Yeah, that's why we're.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I came out. Right.
Kevin Greenlee
And. And so again, it required surgery. And I was told, don't do any work. Don' much of anything. You just need to hang out quietly and recover. And during that time, as I was looking for something to occupy myself, I returned to my research on the Burger Chef murders, which ultimately led me to you.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
So you had been on Burger Chef for a little bit, then you took a break and then you came back to it because of Lanolin.
Kevin Greenlee
Yeah.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And then can you explain to everyone why her name is Lanolin? What was Lanolin?
Kevin Greenlee
At some point, I had a dream in which I owned a dog named Lanyon. And I like the sound of that name.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Means sheep's fat, but.
Kevin Greenlee
And then out of shame, we called her Lanny.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And then you call her Lanolin Q. Smith sometimes to make her sound formal.
Kevin Greenlee
Yeah. If a dog frustrates you, you need a lot of syllables to let them.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Know to remonstrate with them.
Kevin Greenlee
Yes. I always like giving a dog a name that other dogs don't have. Earlier I had a dog that I love dearly, named Trellis. No other dog in this country to my knowledge, has ever been named Trellis. I was the pioneer.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
You were a pioneer. You like to be innovative.
Kevin Greenlee
When you first met Lanny, I think Lanny was kind of a black pit bull.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She's not.
Anya Cain
She was brindle.
Kevin Greenlee
A brindle Pitbull.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She was a brindle baby.
Kevin Greenlee
You were scared.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I don't know how.
Anya Cain
Pitbull.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I mean, she definitely was part pitbull. I'd never had any sort of pit mix or pitbull before. And you know, frankly, like I. I'm going to. This is maybe a hot take, but I mean, they're wonderful dogs, but they were trained to fight. And they. And the big problem, I think, is their physicality. If they get out of control can be a real problem. If your Chihuahua gets out of control, it's a problem, but it's not necessari going to kill anyone. But, you know, I was like, I was. I was a little bit nervous because I, you know, she looked like she had the powerful bite and stuff, and so I was giving her a little.
Kevin Greenlee
She looked like if she wanted to, she could kill you in a second. I wouldn't say, one snap of her mighty jaw, you'd be gone.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I wouldn't say that.
Anya Cain
She looked sweet, but she also.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I just didn't know her, so I was a little nervous, but she was so, so sweet. And I was giving her little treats, I remember. And she was so cute, you know, just her little. Little ears. And she was just a great. She's a great girl. She's one of the sweetest. One of the best personalities of a.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Dog that I've ever.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Just very winning. Very. She's very Miss Congeniality. You know, she just was the mayor of every place she ever was. She was going to greet everybody. She's gonna go say hi. Her one pit bull stereotype that she did live up to that we had to be careful about was she did not like other animals, including other dogs. So we steered clear from the dog park, we steered clear from other places where she could get into it with other. Other dogs. But. But she loved people.
Kevin Greenlee
She loved everyone she met. There was an ill fated attempt on.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Our part to foster another dog. Yeah, yeah. Did not work out there. There was a. Maybe a death fight over rotten apples that fell from the tree in our yard. Yeah, there may have been some. Yeah, you may have gotten badly bitten in the process, but not by Lanny, but by the other dog. But, yeah, that was. That was not. It was not anyone's finest hour. But we did try. That other dog ended up in a safe and happy place. So there was no, you know, he's fine. He got his. He got a. He's a single. He's an only dog now in. In a different family. But we realized that Lanolin had to be an only dog, too. Yeah, she could not. She was not gonna share us with other people. But.
Anya Cain
But no, she was a great girl.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
But very, very gentle with other humans. She loved kids. I remember, you know, kids on our block would come and pet her and she would love that. And she, you know, she liked to kind of come see what was Going, when we have our Patreon lives, she would kind of come and see. She wouldn't always want to come over because I think she was annoyed with us for talking to the computer instead of her. But she would. She would come in and supervise a little bit.
Kevin Greenlee
You called her the executive producer.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She was the executive producer. You know, we'd be recording in our little studio apartment in Brooklyn, and she'd be sitting on the bed just looking at us like, have you checked. Have you fact checked that? Have you requested comments? She was very smart in her own way, but she had a real emotional intelligence. Like, she could tell when you were upset and stuff.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And would she come over and sit with you?
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Other times she'd be like, I want to be left alone. As she got older, she was more wanting to go nap and stuff. But.
Kevin Greenlee
Yeah, that's something. Again, we're going to try not to cry, but it's something with dogs. One of the many things they teach you is a lesson about life, because when you get a dog, you know what's going to happen, you know, at the end of it. You're going to see that dog get older and weaker, and you're going to see that dog pass away. And you know that's going to be really, really terrible and hard. But you do it anyway because the good things really make it worthwhile. And if you go through life trying to avoid anything that might cause you pain, you're not going to have much.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Joy in your life, you know.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
That's really well said, Kevin.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I. I want to share some silly.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Lanolin stories because I think they're fun.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And kind of tell you about her personality. I remember one time she. She liked to elope. She liked to run. That was really scary because I think. I think her love of novelty and her love of new people was like, she just wanted to go out and meet everyone in the world. There's a Canadian show called the Littlest Hobo, which is about a German shepherd that travels from town to town fugitive style, meeting new people and getting into adventures. And I feel like that was her ideal lifestyle. And she. We came in with pizza one day and she, like, slipped under our legs and ran for it. And I'm like, bulking it down the block, screaming at the top of my lungs for her to come back. And she, like, looks back at me and is like, oh, it's a game. And, like, kind of keeps running. And this local teenage girl ended up helping me corralling her. So God bless that young lady. We gave her a Target car, target gift card afterwards to say thank you. But that was. That was crazy. But the funnier elopement story was when she. We. We had this at a place we lived. We had a backyard. We let her out, and then she's gone. And we were like, oh, my God, she got under the fence or over the fence. We don't know. She could jump pretty high. And we are running.
Anya Cain
We're frantic.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
We're freaking out. Kevin goes near this body of water nearby and falls in, like, literally stumbles into the water.
Kevin Greenlee
Not stumbles. I'm a very graceful man.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Oh, you pirouetted into the water. I'm sorry. Excuse me. I didn't know that was on purpose. Into the sloppy sludge water. And I'm screaming. I'm, like, crying. And then we look back at our yard, and she's in the fricking yard looking at us, like, judgmentally. It was. That was insane. Tell him about the time she. Before I was on. In the picture, that she, like, destroyed your house and ended up on a table with the bone.
Kevin Greenlee
Oh, yeah.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She.
Kevin Greenlee
She loved bones. But the bone had to be a certain size. It had to be.
Kevin Greenlee (also identified as an attorney, possibly same as C)
She had to look at the bone.
Kevin Greenlee
And evaluate, Okay, I can do this in one sitting. And if the bone is just a little bit bigger than she thinks she can handle, then she decided, well, no, what I need to do is not even chew on the bone. I need to hide the bone, because I guess I'm afraid that Kevin is gonna take the bone and eat it himself.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Sounds like you.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Uh, and.
Kevin Greenlee
And so going out of the house. Here's a bone to occupy yourself with. And apparently, it was a little bit too big. And so she ran all over the house, frantically burying it under cushions and stuff, and then deciding that hiding place wasn't good enough to outwit me, and eventually tearing apart couch cushions, tearing apart pillows, trying to match the bone in there and then take it out. Yeah.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And then what happened when you came home? Where did you find her?
Kevin Greenlee
What do you mean?
Anya Cain
Wasn't she collapsed on top of a table?
Kevin Greenlee
Yeah, she was collapsed on top of a dining room table, which she had no business being on.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I just think that's such a funny image. Your house is destroyed, and you come back with this dumb ass on the table, passed out like she's been through an ordeal.
Kevin Greenlee
What are some of the stories about her you remember?
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Um, I like the one where. Well, I mean, she was just such a sweetie. Um, I. I won't go into the specifics, but there was a situation I know you told me about where she defended a family member who is vulnerable. Um, she was not a very protective dog necessarily. She's not a very good bodyguard. But there was one instance where she rose to the occasion. There was a kind of a vaguely threatening Rottweiler nearby who kind of, I think, lunged at one of our family members and, and she fought him. So she could be kind of a badass. Sometimes I think if there had been burglars in our house who were like kidnapping us, she probably would have become friends with them. I don't know if we would have necessarily, like, if there were human attackers. I don't know if she would have been very good with that. Might have just been some new friends, you know, like, hey, let me help you bring in your knives and kill kits. But, you know, like with, with other animals, she was going to, she was definitely going to step up.
Anya Cain

Well, our sponsor Simplisafe can help with your peace of mind. We've trusted Simplisafe's home security system for years. Traditional home security systems just don't cut it. They only go off after someone's breaking in. They are purely reactive, safe.

Simplisafe is proactive. Their AI powered cameras detect threats while they're still outside. That's when live monitoring agents jump in. They can address the intruder directly, tell them they're on camera and that the police are coming. They can even set off alarms and sirens and lights.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
We love Simplisafe. We used it when we were renters, we used it when we bought our home. It is so easy to set up and allows you so much flexibility. It's reliable. We've gotten threats over our reporting before, so we take this stuff very seriously. And with Simplisafe we feel we're in great hands.

Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Book now@vervo.com and yeah, she just dumb. I remember when we were in Brooklyn she was a beautiful dog. You know she. So people would compliment her a lot and you know Brindles are very special. So people, people like that. I remember there was one time where I think you, you had her out and you were kind of like chased down by some like kind of tough looking construction guys and you for a minute were like, what's happening. And they were all. They were all, like, really excited about her and were, like, petting her. Do you remember that?
Kevin Greenlee
I knew they loved her.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah, they were very sweet. They're nice guys. I don't. I don't think. I think there was a bit of a language barrier between us, but they were. They were n nice guys. And they just wanted to come pet her because I think they thought she looked like a cool dog.
Kevin Greenlee
And after that, I would be walking sometimes the neighborhood, sometimes with you, and these construction workers would come up and talk to me, and I think they just want news about Lanny.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah, they would be like, how is she? And I remember there was a guy who unfortunately. I mean, this isn't that funny, but there was a guy who would. Who obviously was having some kind of crisis or maybe some sort of drug thing. And he kind of lived on our block. We think he was homeless, but we don't know for sure. And he would scream about how no one was going to force him to do a certain sexual act with a dog. And that was kind of scary because we were like, okay, that guy.
Kevin Greenlee
As far as I was concerned, that never came up.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
No. And we were a little bit, like, nervous about that because it's like, okay, he's having a bad time, and we certainly feel very bad for him. But I hope, like. I hope him screaming about this doesn't result in, like, any sort of physical action. But she would always want to go over and, like, hang out with him. She'd be, like, pulling us and be like, lani, no. Yeah, she.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She liked.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I think she liked Brooklyn because she got to meet a lot of people. There were a lot of stim. Stimulation, a lot of, you know, smells, and, you know, everyone. You know. One of my favorite lanolin things is it was snowing. I think we've told the story on the show before, but it was snowing. And this guy came up and we were walking her, and she's wagging her tail. He said, I got. I said that the first dog I see out here in this weather was the Champ.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
That's the Champ.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And then we just started. We're like, yeah, that was a fun interaction. There were these like. Like guys who would sit out in lawn chairs outside of a. A funeral parlor, and, like, I don't know if they must have worked there, but they'd be like. I think sometimes we'd see them bringing in coffins. Whether those coffins were full or not, I don't know. She'd always. She didn't get to see them. She'd get to see some of the kind of people.
Kevin Greenlee
Brooklyn was an interesting place to live.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I remember she enjoyed. I think we joked that she enjoyed going to. Going to see the Navy pier, which we lived nearby. So we'd run down to the Navy Pier with her.
Kevin Greenlee
She loved going at the Navy Yards.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Navy Yard.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I forget what it was called.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah.
Kevin Greenlee
Especially if you could time it so we could step outside just as they were getting off of a shift was.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Ending, or the ferry was getting out.
Kevin Greenlee
And all these people would come pouring by, and that would make her unbelievably happy.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And then she liked another place we lived because it was a big backyard, and I think she liked where we lived now because there was the best of both worlds. You got some more space, but still more people that she would get to see on our walks. More people out and about around here. So she kind of got the best of both worlds in the end. Yeah. She was such a.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She was such a sweet girl.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I remember, like, if I was upset or sad about something, she'd come over and just snuggle. I'm gonna really miss her so much.
Kevin Greenlee
Yeah, there've been a lot of tears shed.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I feel like I have a guilt because we were away from her for a long time with the Delphi case. If any of you guys listen to any of. I think we did a couple of interviews with our friends Brett and Alice from the prosecutors. Wonderful people. And they were like. We were always in the car, and this was always during the Delphi trial. And I remember.
Anya Cain
I think one time they were like.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Where are you guys going?
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And we're like, we're driving back to Zulani because we just felt so bad that we weren't. Weren't there with her for, like, a month, you know, and it was very difficult to be separated. I think she probably cared less than we did. She got to hang out with some of her favorite people. She was doing fine, but we were, like, a wreck, like, because it was just. I. You know, I didn't want her to feel abandoned again. I think she was probably, like, more fine with it than we were. But, yeah, we'd go back every weekend, every Sunday, just so we could spend one night here with her at home and then drive back to Delphi.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
That was.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Again, I don't feel like we did everything strategically correct with any of that. But, you know, I felt like I'm glad we did it because I still have guilt about not being there for her when. Turns out she was so close.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
To the end, you know.
Kevin Greenlee
And then December was very hard. We tried to arrange our schedule to take a couple of weeks off at the end of the month. And then about a week into the month, Lanny had been coughing. We took her to the vet and found out that she had inoperable cancer. And they didn't know how much time she had. And we went to make her remaining time as best as we could. And then ultimately, you and I both got very sick with the flu or something. I don't know. And during that time, over the two weeks we had off, her health, which originally was pretty normal except for the cough.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She started.
Cough, yeah.
Kevin Greenlee
She started eating less, but she still enjoyed walks and stuff.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Around.
Kevin Greenlee
They got close to New Year's, she really seemed to be slipping. And we made the decision, you know, let's call somebody to come and do a humane euthanasia. And that was going to be a New Year's Day. On New Year's Eve, we took her for a walk and she just have it in her. And she started having some trouble breathing. We set her up on the couch. We elevated her head so she could breathe. We gave her some love. And then she just looked at us like, leave me alone. I want to rest. And so we left her alone. And then when we woke up the next morning, she'd gotten off the couch and she was stretched out on the floor in her favorite sleeping position. And she was gone.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah, it was kind of hard.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
We didn't realize it immediately because I think with the brindle and with the.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Light, for some reason it just looked.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Like she was breathing and she wasn't.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I still feel like. I wish I'd gotten to, like, hold her, but. So she wasn't alone when she was going. But I guess all we can, any of us can hope for is a peaceful death in our sleep. So I suppose it's just me being selfish, but I just. I hope she knew how much we loved her, because we loved her a lot. And I'm gonna miss my friend very much. She was such a good girl. It still doesn't feel real. I keep seeing her sometimes. I keep.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Whenever there's, like, a dark shape on the couch or, like, you know, a throw blanket or whatever, I'm like, it's Lani.
Kevin Greenlee
Yeah. I keep wanting to walk her or.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Feed her, and it's like we, you know, taking her out for the last time was awful when.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Because the vet did come to take her away, obviously.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And it was. I don't know. I don't Know, I still.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She's just been a part of our.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Lives and our relationship and she's been a part of the show since the beginning. And as we said, she's the reason.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
There is a show. She gave us a lot of gifts just from her wonderful personality, but also just, you know, getting Kevin brutally injured so he could meet me. Thanks, lady. She's a wonderful wing woman.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
It just doesn't seem, you know, it.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Just doesn't seem real sometimes that she's gone. But we.
Kevin Greenlee
Yeah, yeah, it was terrible when they took her away for the last time.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
That.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah, the finality of that, I don't know.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Dogs are wonderful until. Until they get sick and die and.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Then it's just a. A nightmare. But, you know, she was. Yeah, she was our executive producer.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She really. I mean, like I said that jokingly because she also, she would try to sabotage. Like if we were. Remember, we'd like, talk to the news sometimes and she'd try to come in and, like, you know, jump up and be annoying. Like. Like, so she. She had a. She had a love hate relationship because sometimes we'd have to do work and we weren't paying attention to her. So she'd be mad. But, you know, we try to take breaks and pet her and stuff, but she.
Kevin Greenlee
The main time she wanted to play would be when we were like, on live television.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
On live television. Yeah. We'd be like, let's play. Let's play rope. Let's play this.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Or she'd at you like, you know what? I'm not really up for it.
Kevin Greenlee (also identified as an attorney, possibly same as C)
What.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
What are you doing?
Kevin Greenlee
You want me to grab a rope?
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
You think I'm.
Kevin Greenlee
That's insults, both of us.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah. Like what. What are we doing here?
Anya Cain
She.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She was a good rope. We, Me and her, played a lot of tug of war and she was good, but she would sulk sometimes if I won. She was.
And you would sulk if she wanted.
I would sulk if she won.
Kevin Greenlee
What a pair.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Got beaten by a dog. But she was strong and. And she had the. The.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Gosh, she was a good dog.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She was really, really, really sweet.
Kevin Greenlee
And we're dog people and so we'll get another dog probably very soon. I think we need the lightness of having a puppy in the house to distract us and to get used to, so. But that doesn't mean we will ever forget Lanny.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
No, we're never gonna forget Lani. She was our baby.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
I don't forget any of my childhood dogs who passed away. You know, I had. I had a couple Albus Dumbledore as well as Miss Dancer and Rocky and they were all great dogs, wonderful dogs. They all passed away. They've passed away since, you know, and I.
Kevin Greenlee
We have a dead dog wall.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
We do have a dead dog wall.
Kevin Greenlee
We have pictures of our dog.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Any dog we get next is gonna be like, what happened? What did you do? It's gonna look like Bluebeard. Yeah, you had some great dogs.
Kevin Greenlee (also identified as an attorney, possibly same as C)
I did, yeah.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
You had a dog that you really kind of soul bonded to. I feel Tripsy.
Kevin Greenlee
Tripsy was a good boy. Good girl.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
She was a girl, sir.
Kevin Greenlee
I always get confused.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
You do.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
He really does. But we'll.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
We'll be looking to adopt another puppy or doggy or whatever, and, you know.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
But we won't forget Lanny. But yeah, we just, I don't know.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Needed. Needed to unpack some of this because I. I just feel like, I don't.
Kevin Greenlee
Know, we feel close to y', all, so I just wanted to let you know what's going on.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
2025 was a rough year and I feel like this was kind of the culmination of it, you know, I mean, it was a wonderful year in some ways. We got to meet a lot of you and I loved that. I loved doing, you know, different events for the book and getting to kind of talk about things, answer questions. It was really uplifting in that sense. But the book writing process was difficult and very expedited. It was just hard. And so it just felt like, first day of 2026, she's gone. It just felt like 2025 just couldn't let us out of there without one more blow. And so. Yeah. But we'll be back to our regular scheduled programming very soon, so forgive our self indulgence here. Forgive our self indulgence here. I just felt like, you guys, the outpouring of love and kindness on social media was, Was so, was so lovely. And we just wanted to give Lanny her due because she was a really important person to. Important pup, whatever, to. To us and was. Had a big impact on this show. And so, you know, we'll be.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
We'll be missing her a lot, but we certainly will never forget her.
Kevin Greenlee
Absolutely not. Oh, man, it's been rough. It wasn't a fun two weeks off.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
No, it really wasn't. It really wasn't.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
But you know what? I feel like when it comes to, like, going through bad stuff, Kevin's the best person to do that with because he's very calm and lovely and wonderful and so I hope, I hope I helped you because you helped. You helped me a lot. And, you know, it's. There's no easy way to go through that. But I'm. In a way, I'm kind of glad it happened on the two weeks that we took off because specifically I. I got. I felt like we got to spend a lot of time with her, which is what. I would feel a lot of regret if we'd been in the middle of some kind of, you know, crazy work situation and perhaps not paying attention, and then she slips away without us getting to really spend time and say goodbye.
Kevin Greenlee
She was an older girl. I was worried that something was going to happen to her during the trial.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Well, yeah, I was worried. That's why we wanted to go back.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Every week, because it was like, let's check out.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
And she was fine. She was, like, fit as a fiddle at that point. It was a pretty rapid decline towards the end.
But especially the last day, that was.
Kevin Greenlee
That was bad.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Yeah, that last day was hard. But, you know, I think I just.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Want to say thanks to everyone who reached out and said something nice and commented and stuff. That was.
Kevin Greenlee
It was very helpful.
Unidentified Male Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
Honestly. The other day I just kind of spent the day just looking at comments like crying and like, I don't know, it was. I. A lot of people have gone through that, losing a beloved pet, whether it's a cat or a dog or anything, really. And that was, you know, that was kind of weirdly healing for me. But, yeah, we thank you guys and thanks for putting up with us. And we'll get back to crimes in our next episode.
Unidentified Female Speaker (possibly a co-host or guest)
But thank you.

If you're looking to talk with other listeners about a case we've covered, you can join the Murder Sheet discussion group on Facebook. We mostly focus our time on research and reporting, so we're not on social media much. We do try to check our email account, but we ask for patience as we often receive a lot of messages. Thanks again for listening.
This special episode of Murder Sheet shifts focus from true crime reporting to a heartfelt tribute to the podcast's beloved executive producer: their dog, Lani (formally Lanolin Q. Smith). Hosts Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee share memories, stories, and reflections on Lani’s life and her central role in their personal lives and the podcast’s journey. They candidly discuss the joy Lani brought, the grief of her recent passing, and the deep lessons learned about love, loss, and companionship.
“If you go through life trying to avoid anything that might cause you pain, you’re not going to have much joy in your life.”
— Kevin Greenlee (09:32)
“I hope she knew how much we loved her, because we loved her a lot. And I’m gonna miss my friend very much.”
— Unidentified Speaker (25:29)
“She was such a sweet girl... She was the mayor of every place she ever was. She was going to greet everybody.”
— Unidentified Male Speaker (07:27)
“She gave us a lot of gifts just from her wonderful personality, but also just, you know, getting Kevin brutally injured so he could meet me. Thanks, lady. She’s a wonderful wing woman.”
— Unidentified Speaker (26:24)
“I just spent the day just looking at comments and crying... A lot of people have gone through that, losing a beloved pet. That was kind of weirdly healing for me.”
— Unidentified Male Speaker (32:25)
While “Lani” departs from Murder Sheet’s typical true crime format, it offers a moving, honest tribute to the dog who was integral to not only the hosts’ lives but the very creation of the podcast. The episode is both a celebration of Lani’s unique spirit and an exploration of the deep bond between pets and their humans. Listeners are left with a message about embracing life’s joys, even when they come with inevitable pain, and the enduring impact of a good dog.
