Good morning. Welcome to Nice news today, your 10 minute roundup of the week's most positive News. It is August 15th and today I'm diving into a new dating app specifically geared toward dog lovers. I've also got the scoop on an at home mental health therapy to add to your mental health toolbox, a promising new pancreatic cancer vaccine and a few elves who are getting an early start on their Christmas dog duties. I'm your host, Case Kenny. Let's uncover some good Together A new dating app will soon help dog people find their people Launching in September, Frawley will connect folks in Charlotte, North Carolina through their mutual love of pups. Founder Cindy Himmel told Axios that the idea came about when her daughter Amanda told her that she broke things off with someone she was d because he wasn't that into dogs. Both avid dog lovers, Cindy and Amanda previously founded the Artemis Cares Fund, which offers affordable pet care to pitbull owners. You don't have to own a dog to join the app, you just have to be a dog person. But those with pups will be able to create a profile for themselves as well as for their dog, and they can include details like their pet's size, breed, activity level and more. The app asks questions that you may want to know when dating a dog owner, such as is your dog allowed on your bed? And is your dog good with children? Then the algorithm will match users based on their pup related preferences and lifestyle compatibility. Cindy hopes Frawley will bring joy back into the online dating process and noted that traits often seen in dog owners like trustworthiness help build great foundations for relationships. The app will have a charitable aspect as well. Up to 25% of its profits will go toward a woman founded Dog Rescue. If all this sounds up your alley and you're a Charlotte local, you'll be able to download Frawley from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for free during its first six months. Hopefully it's a success and expands to more cities. I'm a huge fan of any mental health practices that can easily be done at home, and especially those that don't cost a thing to try out the one I'm talking about Today, all you need are your fingertips. Called Tapping Therapy, or eft, which stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, it involves tapping your fingers on nine points along your head, neck, neck and upper body while focusing on a problem in your life. Here's how to get started. Identify a stressful situation or feeling you'd like to work through. Then rate its intensity on a scale of 1 to 10 and pair it with a statement of acceptance or safety for example I accept that I feel this way. Then tap through the nine points, which are as follows. The side of the hand, the eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin crease, collarbone under the arm and top of the head. Check in with yourself on the intensity of your feeling after you finish and repeat the process as needed, an EFT researcher told today. The technique incorporates acupuncture, cognitive therapy and exposure therapy, and it helps participants recall their problems while sending a signal of calm to their brain. Definitely worth giving it a try next time your mind needs a little extra TLC if you're groaning about Halloween decor popping up on shelves already, you probably don't want to jump all the way to Christmas Christmas. But it's probably not too early for holiday cheer for the quote unquote elves who recently began bringing Christmas wish lists and letters to Santa Claus Village. Yes, you heard me correctly. Earlier this month, three postal workers set off on a nearly 2,000 mile bike journey from St Nicholas, Germany to a winter themed amusement park on the edge of the Arctic Circle in Finland. They're part of a group of volunteers who answer over 30,000 letters from children each year that are addressed to the St. Nicholas Post Office, a tradition that started in 1967. According to the Associated Press, the entire trip will last about two weeks and will take the elves, I mean postal workers, through Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland until they reach Santa Claus's office. Personally, I wish them the best of luck with their journey. And now a quick break to learn about today's sponsor, Cozy Earth. Everyone has a happy place in their home. For me, it's my bed. There's nothing better than collapsing into bed at the end of a long day. Day and Cozy Earth sheets are the ultimate way to make your bed as comfortable as possible. They're made from viscose from bamboo and naturally wick heat and moisture away from your body, helping you sleep several degrees cooler. As someone experiencing summer in the south, that's been a game changer for me. If you want to try them out for yourself, the purchase is risk free. Cozy earth offers a 100 night sleep trial and and a 10 year warranty. Head to cozyearth.com use the code nice news to get 40% off and if you get a post purchase survey, make sure to let them know you heard about Cozy Earth from Nice News Today. Your bed should be more than a place to sleep. It should be your happy place. And Cozy Earth makes that possible. Up next a new vaccine that may prevent hard to treat pancreatic cancers from returning, showing promising results in an early trial published on Monday. The trial looked at 20 people with pancreatic cancer who also had KRAS mutations, which are among the most common gene mutations that cause cancer. All the participants had undergone standard treatment to remove the majority of their tumors, but they still had some remaining cancer cells. While this is common with pancreatic cancer, the cells are so small that they're difficult to see on scans, and if they travel to other parts of and grow into tumors, they can often cause fatal cancer recurrence. But in the trial, after participants received up to six doses of the new vaccine over a six month period, around 85% of them had an immune response to KRAS mutations, and in around two thirds of those patients, the immune responses were strong enough to ward off lingering cancer cells. After the trial, participants lived without the disease, returning for an average of more than 15 months, far exceeding typical recurrence rates for this category of cancer, the trial co leader told NBC News. I'm sharing an accomplishment in longevity today, and it comes from an unlikely source and alpaca at 27 years old, Hawthornden Wanui is the world's oldest alpaca in captivity. He's currently living in New Zealand and recently earned a Guinness World Record for outliving most of his kind by at least seven years. Wanui spends his days wandering familiar, familiar roots in his paddock in between eating big breakfasts and dinners with pals Barney the Goat and Squeak the Sheep, keeping him company, his owner, Vicky Cordier, said he's very calm and gets along well with others, although he's become a bit of a, quote, grumpy old man if she waits too long to give him his dinner. As for the secret to his long life, Cordier thinks it has to do with his comfortable, pampered lifestyle, explaining that he has shelter for the rain and a warm coat for the cold. If you'd like to see an adorable video of him in said coat, I recommend heading to the Guinness World Records website. Back to school season is in full swing right now, and as fun as buying new clothes and supplies can be, many families find it challenging to afford all the expenses. So every year for the past five years, today's inspiring human Davis Wynn has set out to help those families at the New Generation Barbershop in Tampa, Florida. Wynn and his team of barbers offer free haircuts to kids before the start of the new school year. During this year's event, which took place August 4th they also handed out free backpacks, bikes and school supplies donated by community members and local businesses. In total, around 70 kids got free haircuts and more than 150 went home with free backpacks. Wynn told People magazine that he experienced firsthand the struggle of not being able to afford new school supplies as a child. His parents immigrated from Vietnam and he grew up in public housing. His stepdad and brother would sometimes cut his and his siblings hair to avoid paying for professional haircuts. Through his annual event, he hopes to help kids focus on doing well in school, learn to take good care of themselves and eventually pay his kindness forward. And that's it for today's episode.
