Case Kenny
Good morning. Welcome to Nice news today, your 10 minute roundup of the week's most positive news. It's July 11th, and today I'm diving into an easy way to create stronger connections through your phone. I'll also get into a mental health benefit of watching dog videos, the ideal bedtime for boosting your daily exercise, and a heroic U.S. coast Guard officer who saved more than 150 people during the devastating Texas floods last weekend. We I'm your host, Case Kenny. Let's uncover some good together what type of texter are you? The kind who writes one word replies or the kind who has an entire emoji dictionary memorized? Personally, I'm probably somewhere in the middle, but recent research indicates that veering toward the latter could help strengthen your connections. A study found that people who texted with emojis were viewed as more emoj emotionally responsive than those who used only words, and this perceived responsiveness was associated with a deeper sense of intimacy in relationships. And for the research, participants between the ages of 23 and 67 were asked to read through text conversations, some with emojis and some without, and to imagine themselves as the sender and a close friend as the person responding. Then, after each conversation, they filled out questionnaires. Not only were the emoji users rated as more responsive, but higher levels of responsiveness also correlated with higher ratings in relationship closeness and satisfaction, per the paper. That suggests that emojis add emotional depth to texts and can enhance partner engagement. And in this sense, all emojis are created equal as both face and non face icons generated similar results. So the next time you shoot off a text, don't hold back. Those rows of hearts or crying, laughing faces might just help you bond with your loved ones. We know by now that cuddling up with your dog can improve your well being, but what if you don't have one? According to a new study, even just watching videos of pups is beneficial. To test this out, college students and members of the general public watched a five minute video of a therapy dog and its handler that imitated an in person therapy dog dog experience. Afterwards, the reported stress levels of participants decreased significantly regardless of their age. And these videos were free and easy for participants to access online, meaning this could be an accessible way for people to seek mental health support, possibly as an alternative to more formal, expensive therapies. Plus, it's always a great excuse to watch adorable animals in action. Next up, I've got a way to indulge in a little nostalgia and beat the summer heat at the same time it turns out that Chuck E. Cheese isn't just for kids. For all those young at heart grown up adults. The popular pizza and entertainment chain recently announced it's launching an arcade for adults called Chuck's Arcade. The selection of games will include classics like Ms. Pac Man, Mortal Kombat and Donkey Kong as well as modern additions like state of the art racing simulators Halo and Connect4Hoops. You'll also find retro themed collectible toys, novelty candy and prize redemption items. The chain said in a statement that these arcades are quote, a modern day love letter to the games and people who made Chuck E. Cheese great. So far, Chuck's arcade has opened 10 locations across the country from Texas to Connecticut. But there are more to come, so keep your eyes peeled before we dive into more good news, I want to tell you about today's sponsor, Duckbill. Life is full of obligations that demand your attention. The country announced that it's creating a new protected marine area around the Gorringe Ridge, the tallest sea mountain in Western Europe. The entire protected area off the southern coast of continental Portugal will encompass more than 38,000 square miles. Once this marine protected area has been established, Portugal's share of protected seas will increase from 19% to at least 27%, according to Reuters. Last year, the country created the largest protected area in the North Atlantic, which measures more than 115,000 square miles around the Azores Archipelago. The newly protected area is expected to create a safe haven for turtles, sharks, marine mammals, coral forests and more. Personally, I love to see it. Night owls will want to brace themselves for this next story. If you're looking to get more physical exercise, you may want to head to bed a little bit earlier or a lot earlier, depending on your current routine. A study evaluating 20,000 participants over the course of a year found that those who went to sleep at around 9pm Got about 30 minutes more moderate to vigorous exercise the next day than those who went to sleep at 1am Even folks who nodded off at 11pm exercised for an average of 15 minutes more than the 1amers did the following day. The study also found that even when participants slept the same amount that they normally did, they would often hit their personal bests for activity time after going to bed earlier the night before. So why did this happen? The researchers speculate that night owls may be busier in general or because their bedtime preferences don't always mix well with standard nine to five routines, they may experience poorer sleep quality and feelings of tiredness throughout the day. Not the best motivation for putting in an hour at the gym, but there's hope if you fall into this category. A schedule shift may be the key to amping up your exercise routine. The recent floods in Texas have been devastating and if you want to help those affected, head to the link in the show notes to learn how you can make a difference for today's inspiring human I'm shining the spotlight on a true hero who rescued 165 people out of flooded waters on July 4th. US US Coast Guard officer Scott Ruskin was stationed in Corpus Christi when he received a call asking his team to respond to the flooding in hunt. Due to the weather, the normally hour long flight took nearly eight and when the 26 year old arrived at Camp mystic, the Christian Girls camp along the Guadalupe river, he was the only first responder there. Ruskin worked with members of the Army National Guard to guide children and adults toward rescue helicopters which carried them out of the flooded areas and into higher landing zones that had more first responders. Not only had he just completed his rescue swimmer training six months prior, but this was his first official mission. He told Good Morning America he relied on his Coast Guard training, which he said is some of the highest level in the world and was motivated by the kids who were looking to him for help, ruskin said. Quote, the real heroes I think were the kids on the ground. Those guys are heroic and they were dealing with some of the worst times of their lives and they were staying strong. That helped me to get in there and help them out. And that's it for today's episode.
