I mean, it's good. It's not as easy as people think, you know, I mean, you gotta come in. It's harder now because, you know, these kids are there for one year and they leave after one year. So you don't get like the same things. Joe, like, Smoothie didn't go to college. So Smooth don't really understand the playing two or three years with a guy and keeping as a. Even as a coach, having a guy. Like, we kept. We kept five years. This. We get five kids this past year from the last team. And just to show that just the extra year with us is life changing, man. Like, you get kids that want to transfer out now after one year, and it's hard when you bring in, you know, last year we have 15 new guys, and it was like trying to put all these 15 guys together, try to put all these attitudes and the mindsets together is tough, man. It's not the same as when we were growing up to where, you know, my main goal is to get to the NBA. These kids are bypassing college, are bypassing the NBA now to stay in college.

[Joe Johnson]

Hey, so let me ask you this. So has it changed since you've been coaching? Has it changed the way you've looked at the game of basketball or how you perceive it now? Cause it's played totally different now, Bill. Cause think about it. When you came into the league, bro, in 98. What was that? Damn, 98. Listen, think about it. Biggs wasn't shooting threes. If you playing with. If you playing with Webb and D Boss, hell, they ain't been. They ain't never shot no threes in their life. You know what I mean? Maybe way up late in his career when he really. But nowadays, hell, if you can't shoot the threes, you can't.

[Mike Bibby]

I mean, there's a lot of people. I mean, like, you gotta have, like, in college, you gotta have at least one big guy that could play in the post with the rebound to where you could cause double team still. But, like, when I was playing, it was. It was Inside out, you know, I mean, I was on my team. Yeah, my team. I was the third. I was the third threat because I had Sharif with his back to the basket country with his back to the basket. And hopefully they get double team and pass it out to me so I can make something happen. But see, I mean, that. But that's the way it was back then. You know, it's changing now where you get one guy now, but now everybody just wants to shoot threes. And, I mean, the game's changed, but that's the way it is. Like, I don't know how it is for you. Smooth. But being at that, Being at the high school level, I was there for a few years, but, I mean, coming in and I. Now, I think if Nil was there when I was playing, I probably wouldn't have made it where I was at today. Because everybody come in like you. Like, I. We have GMs, but I deal with those guys in the money and figure if they're worthy of the money that they get. Because, I mean, you look at these guys, these guys are averaging two and two, and they. We starting at 750,000. You know what I mean? You're averaging two and two. And I mean, it's just. It just. You know what I mean? So.

Hey, hey. So does it take the loyalty out the game now? Meaning? You know, back when we was in school, Bib, you couldn't just. You couldn't just transfer and go play right away. Now, hell, you know, they changing teams. Like, they changing draws.

[Mike Bibby]

Five teams and five.

[Joe Johnson]

I mean, how. How, as a coach? I mean, how do you police a guy now? How do you stay on the guy? How do you hold him accountable without him feeling the way and be like, man, you know what, B, I'm tripping. I'm gonna go over here, Tennessee or Arkansas.

[Mike Bibby]

But my thing is, like, we're a smaller school, Joe, so it's kind of like I want these guys to move on, you know, I mean, we don't have. We don't have the 6, $7 million for you to play here as much as I. As what? I mean, it's gonna look good on me if. If we develop you and get you to those schools, it's gonna look good on our staff. It's gonna look good on me. But my thing is, like, you know, coming to a place like us, we're smaller, we don't have as much money as the other schools. So my thing is, you know, get you a year or two here, you know, Smooth. I talked to you about it too as well. Get you a year here instead of going to like another prep school or something like that. Get you a year at Sac State or. And work your way up. Now you get played there for a year or two. Now you show these guys like, hey, look, I developed, I could do this. And now I'm at that level and I want to push these guys. I want to push these guys to that next level. To where it's like, go make your money. You know, it's all about money. Go make your money. I had this one kid that wanted to come back to school. I'm not gonna say his name, wanted to come back to school, love him to death. But it'd be selfish of me to try to keep him, you know what I mean? But he. The money in college is outrageous right now. It'll be more than what he's making him pro. So I mean, I wanted. I want these kids to be pro. I want them to fulfill their dream. I want them to go be pros.

Hey, is that something. Is that like. Is that like. What's one of the biggest lessons you try to get these young guys, bro, who probably.

[Jamal Crawford]

Look, look.

Cause when they get to you, Bill, some of them probably already think they got it figured out. You know what I mean? What's one of the biggest lessons?

You just work hard, man. Like this. This shit ain't promised to you? No. Like, I just saw somebody, I saw Stack talking about today. 1% make the NBA, you know? I mean, it's not gonna be right. It's not gonna be for everybody. And everybody thinks that they're gonna make it. And it's not necessarily gonna happen. Especially if you don't put the work in.

If you got God, go ahead and think about it. Smooth. Think about this, bro. It's only 450 players in the NBA every year. Not. Not just this year, not just last year. You know what I mean? So you gotta understand, bro, just as much as. As we geeked about, you know, the top prospects that's coming into the NBA now, hell, it's gotta be some leaving for sure. You know what I mean? So I think. I think it's so prestige, bro. Because you're right, bib. It's only a 1% of us, bro. Think about the millions of people who wanna play in the NBA. And hell, it ain't been but like 5, 000 people ever. So to even be in that conversation, to even be in that fraternity, bro, it's a blessing.

And the ain't Easy. Like the people, they look at all the glamor. This ain't easy. I work my ass off, you know? I mean, like, I ain't. I ain't playing with you, Joe. I was. I was sitting there shooting. Shooting shots in the. In a gym that had two baskets, and they're playing pickup, and I'm shooting my shots in between them, you know, so I'm there for four or five hours just getting shots up, you know what I mean?

Hey, so. So you. You do shooting games. You play one on one with them. What I know you got to be out there trying to.

[Mike Bibby]

I saw. I got. I got gloves signed with me, right? So I. I like.

Yes. Love something with us this second year with us. So he. I got it. I have to get on the court because we had a lot of injuries last year. So I got on the court. You know, I'm out there just. You know, I'm out there. I'm out there. You know what I mean? So I'm almost 50 years old. So he got the ball. We played. It was like a three on three. Break. Coming back, right? So I seen his lie. His eyes light up, right? So he talking about. Yeah, now he gonna. He started coming at me full speed. I said, yeah, come on. He went up. I found the out of him. I said, I come. I caught. I called the team and I said, look, I'm out here. Don't mean y' all just start attacking me, okay? I'm out here just trying to feel the body. I' ma foul the out y'.

You think kids nowadays appreciate the fundamentals of the game, bro? You know, think about this, Bill. Smooth when we were coming up, guys, one step back inside stepping euro. It wasn't none of that. It was basic basketball, you may have heard, had a little flair to your game. But we practiced the fundamentals. Not only did we practice it, we mastered the fundamentals. Hell, I know me coming up, like, the first thing I could do was handle the rock, you know, knowing how to play the game, playing the right way. I never got into it to where I was just a guy who. You go recruit and give him 300 grand to play with it, play with us in this tournament, you know what I mean? Do y' all think. Do y' all think the fundamentals is gone from today's game?

[Jamal Crawford]

Yeah, absolutely. Guys want to be skill Based. But this is what I was talking about a few days ago about guys wanting to skip steps, you know what I'm saying? I mean, I didn't automatically jump off the porch knowing how to do all kind of stuff. I had to really put the work in. In the gym in order to kind of like, first of all, we didn't have trainers growing up, so we play. Like, we. We was. Like, you said you were shooting in between, like, Bib, you said you were shooting in between guys running up and down, grown men running up and down. You just trying to get your shots up in between it. And that's just like, we play.

We grew up with an imagination, you know what I'm saying? And we. And we catered. Imagination of what we wanted to do as far as basketball. We watched. We watched the game of basketball. A lot of these. A lot of these guys don't even watch the game. That's why you see a lot of these kids making the wrong decision when it comes to going to colleges because they're just picking these names because that's what they dreamed of and heard, but they're not watching. Like, how do they. How are they catering to my position? Right. Saying, like, how does it. Is this school really catering to the position that's going to help me get to the next level, whatever I want to get to as far as basketball. But they definitely skip steps a lot. It's a lot of side. It's a lot of. It's a lot of guys that are, you know, every time I. Every time I go out there with my son or he's training with somebody, I'm like, look, man, before you do anything, get your form shots up.

Yep.

Saying. Because, you know, that's. That's 70 max right there if you just do it.

That's how we start practice every day. Smooth. With form shots. 50 form shots.

Yeah, absolutely. And then, yeah, you know, people take, you know, when we do have practice, you know, I'm three man weaving. I'm three on two. Two on one.

Yeah, yeah.

Like, guys got to know how to convert in those situations during the game. But how do you know if the coach is not really catering to that and. And they're catering to whatever the player wants because they're afraid the player is going to leave.

Right, right, right. I think that's the hardest thing to juggle nowadays, bro.

Yeah, for sure.

[Joe Johnson]

I mean, so it's. I think it's hard being a coach, Bib. And, you know, I ain't gonna lie, I enjoy seeing you appreciate it. And I know them kids, boy, they giving you. I know they giving you everything. You know what I mean? But if you could. If you could get one piece of advice to every young point guard currently, you know, chasing that NBA dream, man, I wanna make it to the NBA. What advice?

[Mike Bibby]

Just work hard, man. Like, my thing is, like, you could be the greatest in the world, but if you don't put that work in, it ain't gonna. It's not. Nothing's gonna come into play. Like, you got guys that are working at their craft. They're pros now. Like, these college kids are pros now. We pay you to play you that you should. There should be nothing else that you're doing besides being in the gym. And that's. That's the biggest thing that got me over the hump. Cause when I was in high school, I was the number one point guard in the country. And I like, in high school, I really didn't really do much. Like, I played at the park. Like, I played. There was no workout. I didn't do no.

That's what we.

I did no workouts. Like, there was no workouts.

[Joe Johnson]

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. And we gonna get you outta here in a few minutes. But you say you played. Your dad played in the NBA. You know what I mean? You was around the game as a kid. Like, you say, growing up, all we did was play. We ain't have trainers, bro. Like, how did you keep that motivation to continue to play and be like, man, I'm gonna make a name for myself. I know. I'm Michael Henry Bibby. Yeah, yeah. Now think about that. Because I always wonder, bro. And I. And. And I kind of watch from admiration as far as guys who played in the NBA and their kids happen to make it and, you know, whether it's past what they've done or just making it alone. I know it's tough, bro, because you got to have a different type of mentality.

Yeah, my thing was different. Like, I grew up a little bit without my dad. My dad wasn't really around. So, like, he was. He was coaching stuff. Everybody used to. Like Henry, Bibby's son, he wasn't really around. He was out coaching. So he was in Venezuela, Puerto Rico. So he was out there coaching as I was growing up. So, like, he saw me play one game in high school. I still think they gave him the Southern California job to try to get me, you know what I mean? Because he came to me, he's like, yeah, you want to play for your dad. You come average 40 over here. I'm like, man, I'm going to Arizona. So I mean, damn, you tell.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. So just like on he got game when Denzel Washington got out to get Ray Allen. Hold on, man. You went against Pops.

I'm going over there. I'm going to Arizona, man. I mean. Cause I knew what Arizona did for the guards. They put guards in the NBA. My goal was being the NBA. I never out of usc. I really didn't know any guys that went to the league like that. So I was with Arizona. I mean, Damon Stoudeman, Sean Elliott, Khalid Reeves, Steve Kerr, I mean, it was just going all the way down the line. I was like, okay, Coach Olson is a mastermind. I want to go be there and be close to him. My main thing is I wanted to be close to home, man. I was an hour 15 minute drive and I could drive home on the weekend, and I was cool with that.
