Joe Hayden
Brother Debo, I'm. I know you could tell I am not in my home office, you know what I'm saying? I'm a Myrtle beach.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Where you you Myrtle beach, bro. I was hoping I was.
Joe Hayden
No school starts.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Look, you know that flat background I thought you might have been in?
Joe Hayden
I'm just trying to keep it undisclosed. I let you know I'm in Myrtle beach, but not where. You know what I'm saying? You never know where. I'm in Myrtle beach somewhere, but I'm here with the kids somewhere, you know what I'm saying? School starts next week, so last little vacation. But today, but today, today.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Don't you say, don't you say that. Look here man. What we got today, man? We have a man that is actually from Bel Air, Maryland. I only say that because my daddy is from Glenburg, Maryland, so I know Washington, Maryland, okay? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Now, he also went to Harvard, okay? He was there for four years as a starter for the Harvard football team. He earned first team all Ivy honors three times. Come on. In that same process of those four years, Joe, the man earned two degrees, a bachelor's and a master's degree. A graduated cum laude.
Joe Hayden
The man's smart brother to a.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
He would then enter into the League 2009 Indianapolis. He was a scouting assistant working his Way up through the ranks. 2016, he was hired by the Browns. He was of player personnel over there. 2019, he left, did a little hop over there to Philly, became the VP of football operations over there. And then January 28, 2020, he will become the youngest GM in the NFL history at just 32 years old. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the executive vice president of football operations and the youngest GM to ever do it, Mr. Andrew Barrett. Welcome to the show, sir.
Joe Hayden
Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
Andrew Berry
Hey, fellas, thank you for. Thanks for having me on, Joe. James. James. That's quite the intro, man. You gotta be my hype man, telling you, I gotta tell you, when I
James 'Deebo' Harrison
bring you in, I bring you in. Now look here, man, you go and you look at that list of accolades that, that I put out there along with your athletic accomplishments, you know what I'm saying? Like, how did you balance, like, the workload of all of that, plus getting two degrees, what is it? Economics and computer science, and then managed to excel in football all at the same damn time? How did you do that?
Andrew Berry
Well, so I got to tell a little bit of a funny story from growing up. You know, it was really sports and school in my household. Like, my mom, she loved basketball and baseball. My dad, he's from Texas, grew up as huge cowboy fans and everything. And me, my brother, my sister, we love sports, love playing outside, love doing everything like that. But my parents were like, all right, we love that you like being outside playing ball and everything like that, but if you don't get straight A's, we're gonna. We're gonna pull you out everything, like, from a very, very early age, that was the rule where if we didn't get straight A's, we couldn't play sports. So from a very early age, it was like, all right, I'm gonna get good grades so I can play ball. Like, that was. That was like my mentality. And so, um, it. It was, for lack of a better term, maybe a fear based. Fear based.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Right, right.
Bobcat Advertiser
And.
Andrew Berry
And then, you know, as I got older, you learn how to. You learn how to juggle it. I mean, it was. I had a lot of good people around me in college. I had, you know, I had great parents, you know, great teachers and things like that. And I was also fortunate to. To enter college with a year of credits in the bank. So I was able to get the graduate degree in the last, you know, last year, last year there. But it definitely teaches you time management and functioning without sleep, so that type of thing.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Okay, so I saw Also, something about after you had graduated, I guess you turned down a job at Wall street, and you just went on ahead and entered into the assistant scout over there with the coats. So were you actually, like, committed to and confident that you would be able to, like, like, build a career that was successful in the NFL? Like, did you, you know, did, you know, like, it wasn't. You know, what was it for? Cause it wasn't for the money at that point. What was the plan? You ain't making money, you know, especially compared to what you could have been making trading at Wall Street.
Tony Ayo
Yeah.
Andrew Berry
I'll tell you this, James, I think that was one of the best decisions I made in my life because it was based off of something that I was interested in versus something that I was just kind of good at. And I remember, you know, late in that year was just like, all right, trying to get myself worked up. Hey, it's a great resume builder. It pays well. Like, you know, it's what you're supposed to do. And I feel very fortunate that Tom Tesco, former general manager of the Raiders and the Chargers, he was my first boss in the NFL, and he had actually scouted me at the time, you know, when. When he was running personnel for the Colts, and he was the one who actually reached out to see if I'd have an interest in working in scouting. And then you, obviously, eventually in a front office in an nf, you know, an NFL team. So I didn't really know much about the career path until I went on the interview process. Tom talked through it, and I was like, you know what? This is a lot more me. Like, this is, like, what I want to do. So, like, I didn't know where the. I can't say with confidence that I knew where the path would go at that time, but I did know that I was like, hey, I think this is how I want to spend my time, how I want to spend my life. And then. So that's what. That's what forced the 180, you know, turned down the job, packed up all my things in my 93 Acura legend, and then moved out to Indianapolis and then didn't look back. So, man, I feel very blessed, very fortunate.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Oh, yeah, that. That. That's. Yeah, that's an amazing story, brother. Like, because I don't know if I would have been like, yeah, I want to go scout and turn down this secure thing over here. I mean, you got.
Ice Cube Big Three Announcer
You got.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Hey, you got. You got a lot more. Not more, you know, backbone on a situation like that. Than I think I would have had. I know you were the VP over there with Cleveland 2019. I believe you and Joe spent maybe a year, year and a half together, Something like that. Okay. Hey, tell me about Joe the player
Amazon Health AI Advertiser
Joe.
Andrew Berry
I'm not just saying this because he's here. Joe was awesome. Joe was a complete corner. He could play man coverage, he could find the ball. He was tough in run support. He was a great team, as I'm sure all the listeners can see. He has a great sense of humor like he was. I mean, you both, you both were great players. And you both know that there are very few guys who were like you guys at the peak of your careers where you guys, you guys could transcend scheme. You guys could really play in any scheme because you were so good. You know, Joe was such a good cover guy. You were such a good pass rusher, James. And those players are rare. And it's even rarer when you also pair that with someone who's a really good person, really good work ethic. We were, we were very, very fortunate that.
Joe Hayden
Come on, Deebo, you know, listen, listen,
James 'Deebo' Harrison
List, listen, I'm gonna talk to him after we get offline and I let him, I let him go ahead and give me the real answers. Now. You, you know, since you done got over there in Cleveland, you don't got to this, this gym position over there and you know, you don't have some changes going on. I think the most notable thing right now is you, you got your head coach that's over there right now.
Ice Cube Big Three Co-Announcer
Yeah.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
You know what I would say, what attributes did Monkin bring to the table? And you know that you saw that, that made you be like, you know what? This is our guy. And even during that time right now through preseason, you know, going, going through, has that direction been proven to be or, or has what he's done been proven to be what you were thought he would be able to do through the, to the point where you're at now.
Andrew Berry
Yeah, it's a great question. I think the highest praise that I can give Todd as, as we've quote unquote, like kind of live together is that he doesn't behave or feel like a first time head coach. It's like, you know, it's like you're, it's one of those things where you're like, are you sure you haven't, you know, you haven't, you haven't done this for, for a little bit. And part of is he had great mentors with John Harbaugh, Kirby smart You know, guys like that. But the, the way I would describe Todd is he is a mix of old school discipline, work ethic, you know, things like that with new school football and relationship building, which I think is so important because there is, like, there are foundational things in terms of how you structure, discipline a team. But look, we're dealing with guys who are in their mid-20s. The game is ever evolving, and you've got to be able to, like, adapt and die. Like things that worked in, you know, the 80s or 90s, you know, early 2000s. That's not necessarily going to be the same both schematically or, you know, how you deal with, with guys who are in their, in their, you know, in their mid-20s.
Joe Hayden
Right.
Andrew Berry
And I think that mix is pretty unique. And then probably the last thing I'd offer is we knew that the hire that we made would have a unique challenge in running a young team. We knew we were going to have a very young team relative to other rosters in the NFL, and we wanted someone who could lead and develop what would be a young, talented group of players. But, you know, just like you guys earlier in your careers, like, you guys weren't the same players your rookie or second year as you were in, you know, year five, six and, you know, five, six and seven. And so, you know, we felt like that was really important and Todd's background, both in terms of having a demonstrated track record, both at the college level, whether it was Southern Miss or Oklahoma State or Georgia, as well as the NFL level, you know, at, you know, Baltimore, you know, Tampa, certainly here. The one year he was here, you know, we felt like that was, that was a, a unique combination of strengths that would really serve our team well.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Okay, for sure now. Hey, I got, I got. Joe was a little. Joe was a little hurt when this happened. I ain't gonna lie to you. But, you know, you had another significant change when you got rid of your, your cornerstone over there in, in Miles Garrett. I think he was there for what, seven, eight years. So, you know, I can't lie. I'm not mad that you traded him out of division. You know, I'm just, I'm just letting you know, Mr. Barry, you know, you know, but I understand. You know, I'll say I understood the, the strategy going into it. And Joe, like I said, he, once he got over it and realized what was going on a little better about it, but, you know, in your strategy to make that decision to, to trade him this year, and I think, or I want to ask you why did you make that decision for it to be this year and not next year? Why did you feel like you needed to pull that trigger this year?
Andrew Berry
So first of all, you know, Joe, those are, yeah, I'd say, well, number one, they're very hard decisions. I'll tell a quick story, Joe here
Amazon Health AI Advertiser
that
Andrew Berry
when I told my 8 year old son, I was like, you know Miles, Miles Garrett, he's no longer with the team.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Oh, it was tears.
Andrew Berry
His response was, you did what? That was his, that was, that was his hurt. I don't, he didn't talk to me for the rest of the afternoon. And then here's the other part. So his favorite player for his childhood has been David and Joku. And I hadn't told him yet that David had signed with the Chargers. So poor parenting moment. I told him both those pieces of news at the same time. So it was a rough, you gave
Joe Hayden
him a right left and I'm not
Andrew Berry
done yet in the very household. But you know, look, Miles is a great player. He's a generational pass rusher and it's, it's special to have an individual like that on your team, particularly one that's homegrown. Because of that reason, we weren't going into the off season, like there was no active plan or scenario that we were going to go out and try and try and trade Miles Garrett. But at least what I've learned being in this position is that there are some opportunities that come up unexpectedly that like basically cause you to stop and like reevaluate, you know, where you are. And hey, is this really hard decision something that may be better short term and long term for, you know, for the team? And when LA came, you know, we've, we've gotten maybe a handful of like, call it, you know, aggressive, you know, pick type deals. But like those, those really don't, those really don't match with a player as rare and as unique as Miles. When, when LA included, you know, a player who's going into his third year, he's a premium edge rusher. You know, he in his first two years had accomplished more than, than really a lot of, a lot of great players in this league early on and we felt like was a really strong match for what we want to do. On top of the draft resources we received. We felt like it was a unique combination of, you know, getting a young start at a, a premium position who was cost controlled, you know, high level resources and then a trade where you're not just leaving a gaping hole with the team. Yes, because you're getting a really good player plus the future value with the picks and the dollar. So it was really hard because, you know, I, you know, I remember talking through Todd with this and walking through it and I was like, you know, he's like, no, I totally understand. Like, you know, how he sees this is good for us. And, and then I joked, I was like, I'll be honest, like I don't want to be the, I don't want to, like, I'm not looking forward to this press conference. Like to tell people, Miles Garrett, that type of thing, that's not, you know, that's not something that I want to do. But I feel very strongly that this combination of things that we're receiving for the organization, for the team, you know, will make us better off, you know, will make us better off moving forward.
Joe Hayden
Thousand?
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Yeah, that, that player you're talking about is obviously Jared Verse. I believe you recorded as saying he has the perf DNA match for the team and getting him to the Rams or getting him in that deal with the Rams was a non negotiable. So now that you have him there and you know, you've seen what he's doing to this point, has that solidified your assessment of him?
Andrew Berry
It, it really has. James and you know, Jared, Jared Verse in an attack front with his speed and his power and his motor is, is. I think it's just uniquely suited to, to, to marry together. And I, you know, I would, I'm not just saying this is, I'm on the pod, but I think his. I think the only person that I can remember in my scouting career who's had as much power as a rusher as him is you.
Joe Hayden
Hey, I like that. I like that.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
It's true.

We go become best friends and so,
Andrew Berry
and so we have really high hopes for, for Jared. You know, he's obviously accomplished a lot his first two years in the league. We think there's, there's more meat on the bone and we think that particularly how we play our defensive line, where they're the engine of the defense. It's, it's all about generating negative plays and rushing the passer and just his style of play and how he produces. You know, we think that he's, he's, he's really going to create a big impact for us.
Joe Hayden
That's good. So look, long story, A.B. you've been doing great. We've been talking about, I've been talking about how you've been cooking in these drafts lately. So let's talk about some of these draft picks that we got with Spencer, with Casey Concepcion and David Boston. How do you think that they've been performing doing since they, since they came to the Browns?
Andrew Berry
Really, really pleased with all three of those guys. Obviously, they're rookies, they have a long way to go, but, you know, knock on wood, I think I'll start with Spencer, you know, transitioning in at left tackle. That's one of the harder positions to, to work in as a rookie. And, you know, I think Spencer kind of had his ups and downs like in spring and early in camp would expect, but I think really, honestly, the past two and a half weeks, he's really settled into a nice rhythm. And we were really pleased, particularly with, you know, his play during the, the preseason game this past Saturday, you know, against Chicago. He's, he's really settled into that left tackle role. Well, he's very athletic. He's physical. And then the other thing is he's a, he's a sponge when it comes to learning, you know, work ethic, things of, you know, things of that nature. The two receivers, you know, Casey and Denzel, that's, that's a position where they acclimate a little bit more quickly. And we've been really, really pleased with the return so far. Casey he's high level separator, really good with the ball in his hands. We saw what he could do as a punt returner this past weekend. He is, he's the queen on the chessboard. You can move them all around and create matchup advantages because he's such a versatile player who has playmaking both before and after the catch. And then Denzel, you know, Denzel, you know, he really has played like he's a, you know, seven or eight year veteran since he's, you know, since he's been here. He's your classic X body type, bigger frame, you know, elite hands and elite in the contested spaces. But the thing that Denzel probably doesn't get enough credit for is, you know, he can really run and he's a good separator, especially for a bigger body. Usually those bigger guys, they have to make all their plays, somebody on them, you know, in traffic. Yeah, exactly. Where Denzel can, can really do both, which, which really opens up your, your playbook down the field. So look, we're only one preseason game in and a couple weeks in camp, so there's, there's a long way to go. But the early returns have been promising and we're looking to see them grow together.
Joe Hayden
Sure.
Hyundai Hope on Wheels Spokesperson
Yeah, for sure.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Yeah. So I got, I gotta, I gotta jump on elephant in the room. Yep. Y' all got a little bit of quarterback battle over there.
ChatGPT Work Advertiser
Public.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Little public battle over there between Shador and, and desean. I think a lot of fans or people in general are conspiracy theorists to some degree. And I want to just cut the BS and put it out there and ask you the question because it's easier just coming straight from the horse's mouth. And it's a lot of people I know. If you heard that said, you know what, they're paying Watson too much money to not start it. Okay. And that is. That is bs. I know it's going to be based on performance, but I'm gonna let him hear it straight from the horse's mouth. How much of the pressure is on you to start the Watson because of what you're paying?
Andrew Berry
Yeah, it's a great question. I know that's, that can be a common narrative in professional sports, but you're 100, right, that it doesn't matter what they're paid when they're on the field. Like, you know, what we want are our wins and performance and production. Look, there are going to be guys that. There are going to be high salary players that get outperformed by lower salary players. They're Going to be some. That like that really hit the mark. It just, I mean, shoot, if, if teams in general operated with, hey, we've just got to play the money, so to speak. You know, James Harrison would never have a career, right?
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Like never. He never touched.
Andrew Berry
Yeah, you never have a career. And, and, and so, and that's particularly important, most important position in sports, which is, you know, which is quarterback. So it's a performance based, you know, decision. The contract, you know, does not matter. We're pleased with both guys. Like, I think they both had a nice preseason and they did some good things in the game this weekend. But you know, ultimately it's. It's performance and production that's going to drive the decision for coach.
Joe Hayden
There it is.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Deo, listen to them, bro. No one listen. I don't give them about no money.
Joe Hayden
I don't care about from that last game. Coach, how would you say AB. How would you. How would you rate the performances though from the, from the quarterbacks?
Andrew Berry
Yeah, I think we saw good things from both guys.
Tony Ayo
Obviously.
Andrew Berry
Look, it's preseason, preseason. So you know, guys. Guys aren't going to be perfect. I'd say with, you know, desean, we were really pleased with, you know, how we. How he operated the offense. You know, he navigated the pocket well. He was accurate. He was really good with his progressions. And then when we had either miscues or a look that, you know, we weren't necessarily expecting down the field in coverage, he did a really nice job. You know, he didn't break off like a huge scramble, but he did a good job of turning a play that really should have been a negative into a no gain or a short game with his, you know, with his legs. Obviously would like to have the, the fumble on fourth down back and the delay of game penalty. But really, really pleased.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
He's.
Andrew Berry
He's put in a lot of hard work over the past, you know, really over the last year plus and I think that really showed. And then Shador, I think we continue to see major growth in Chador's game both in terms of his processing speed. We know he's. He's got a really natural touch with the deep ball. We know he's naturally accurate. I think you watch him in terms of how he navigates the pocket that's greatly improved from his rookie year. And then really, you know, the operation as well because, because you know, this offense put lot on the quarterbacks at the line of scrimmage. I think both of those guys really handled it well. Obviously don't like to see the turnover. I think Shador said after the game, you know, eyes in the right place, good decision, didn't execute the, didn't execute the throw and that's accurate. Like, you know, guys are going to have bad throws. In his case, you know, I think, you know, obviously the inside of the pocket kind of got pushed into his lap a little bit, which probably caused a little bit of a higher trajectory on the throw. But on the whole, a lot of good to take and then some good moments where we're going to be able to coach off of them and then really improve as we go into the Buffalo League.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Yeah, yeah, definitely. I don't think a lot of people understand how hard it is to get you a franchise quarterback in this league. And when I say a franchise quarterback, I'm talking about somebody that's there for, you know, eight years plus. That is the face of your, you know, the face of your, your offense, the face of your, you know, your team. And it's so many quarterbacks out here that aren't first round picks that have had successful, great, long held the goat of all of them is Tom Brady and he was drafted in the six, you know, so I think, you know, that's something that's, you know, that's a GM thing. That's, that's a, that's a, that's an owner thing. That's, you know, that's something that you guys have to go through. So, you know, in your experience, do you find it easier or better, I would say, to bring in a proven player through a trade or free agency or would you just target, you know, that, that, that one guy in the draft and develop that quarterback?
Andrew Berry
That's a great question. I think you have to be open to both avenues, to be honest. And you know, quarterback, such a difficult position just because of all that's on the plate mentally, physically, how much you, you, you grow over the course of your career. But the other part of it is the environment around the player and the development process, I think, is equally as important as the talent. And I think we've, you know, we've seen that time and time again, you know, across the league as guys have kind of risen and fallen, you know, over the course of their career. And that's something that, you know, organizationally, you know, we have to be conscious of when we're evaluating these guys and then, and then ultimately, if, you know, we're selecting a starter, you select a guy in the draft or you sign or trade for a veteran, being very Deliberate in terms of how you structure the environment. Because, yes, quarterback's the most important position. It has the, you know, the biggest driving towards winning, but it's also very, very interdependent on the scheme and what you're asking the player to do. You know, the protection with the O line, hey, do you have a complimentary run game? What, what are the, what are the perimeter weapons?
CarMax Advertiser
Like?
Andrew Berry
All of that plays into the effectiveness at the position. So, you know, I guess, long winded way of saying James, like, I think both avenues are, are, are, are good ones. I think it maybe creates different challenges, right, with the, with a young player, you're probably going to have longer startup costs, but, you know, they kind of grow up in your environment. They learn, you know, a certain way of doing things with your coaching staff. With a veteran, you know, there's probably maybe a little bit more adjustment in terms of their custom way of playing if they've had a level of success. But, you know, they're, they're so hard to find in such a hard position to play that I think you just have to be open to all the avenues.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Well, yeah, definitely. I mean, I mean, that's why you guys take all the heat. You know what I'm saying? Hell, the GM, something go wrong. It's, it's GM's fault. They trying, they trying, they trying to get rid of him. Hell, y' all got to be stressed to death. Hey, how do you say, manage or, or, or, or how do you manage to not let it affect you, you know, the criticism and all that? What do you do to decompress, you know, from the stress of the job?
Andrew Berry
Look, I would say that, I mean, you guys lived it throughout your careers as well. It's, it's probably any, any profession that's in the public, whether it's. You're an athlete, you're an entertainer, you're a gm, you're a head coach, you're a politician. It comes with the territory. So there's certainly a factor where you just kind of get used to it just because, you know, it's, it's part of the job. I think the second part of it from my perspective, is you can't control what people write or say about you, but you can control your inputs. And so for me, I usually just like, you know, I focus on work, you know, focus on, you know, family, things like that. And then, you know, all the. Look, we work in the entertainment business, and so everybody loves talking about. Everybody has, you know, strong opinions. It's what makes it's part of what makes the NFL great. That doesn't mean you have to consume all of that. You know, you generally want to try and keep your. Your eye on the ball in terms of what you can control and. And ultimately what matters. And then the other part of it is, I think. And I think I would. I would guess that probably the two of you may agree with this, especially as you guys have gotten older, the balance that family and particularly like, kids have, like, in. In your life and the. The perspective that they bring. I think that's, like, that's really important because, you know, if you're grinding, really, the only thing that you have to worry about is, like, your career in your. Your. Your early 20s, your mid-20s, then, you know, maybe that some of that stuff wears on you a little bit more. But, you know, when you have, you know, other responsibilities at home, it really does balance it out and brings it in perspective and can keep you a little bit calmer and cooler in those. In those tougher.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
You ain't got a man cave or nothing like that. Somewhere you go, you fish, do something to what you do to decompress.
Ice Cube Big Three Co-Announcer
You have.
Andrew Berry
I do have the man ca.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Basement.
Andrew Berry
I do have the man cave in the basement. Do have a man cave in the basement. Love. I love, you know, your kind of Netflix streaming stuff like that. Big, big crossfitter.
Joe Hayden
Okay.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Okay.
Ice Cube Big Three Announcer
There you go.
Andrew Berry
That's. That. That's huge for me. It's. It's a great. I love working out. It's a great, you know, stress reliever as well.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Yes, it is.
Andrew Berry
You know, the other. The other thing is I just love spending time out time, whether it's like, hike a run, you know, whatever, you know, maybe play hoops, something like that.
Ice Cube Big Three Announcer
There you go.
Andrew Berry
Yes, it's. It's really. Yeah, it's. It's stuff like that, that. That really. That really balances it out.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Okay. Okay. I'm just making sure. I'm like, you got to do something.
Andrew Berry
That's right. That's right.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Working family, you got to have something where you get like, you know what? Hey, I'm gonna love y', all, chef, but you know what I'm saying? Let me get a little bit over here.
Andrew Berry
This is why I say I love chocolate. I've got a huge sweet tooth. I love chocolate. Right. I can't have chocolate for every single meal, otherwise I'm going to get. Otherwise going to say, it's same thing with football. I love football. I love my job. I love it. You know, but there are some Times that you got to get away a little bit to be the best version of yourself.
Joe Hayden
So, question with the Browns going into this season, how far do you think, or if not, how far do you think we are away from being able to win this division?
Andrew Berry
Yeah, it's a great question, Joe. And I know it's like the question that's on every, every fan's mind. For me, I don't ever put a ceiling on a given team. And, and, you know, I think we just see it time and time again. Like, if you think about a year ago, you know, Kansas City was going to super bowl, they end up picking
Bank of America Advertiser
in the top 10.
Andrew Berry
Since I was one of the favorites, they end up picking them in the top, you know, the, the, you know, the top 10. You know, Chicago was coming off a 512 season. They win and, you know, the Lions were supposed to go to the Super Bowl. Lions out of the playoffs, Chicago wins the division. Jacksonville, you know, pick it in the top five. They go in 13 games. And then probably the best example, you know, the Patriots were picking four, right. And, you know, had one and done coach. And, you know, there was, there was no shot that they were going to do anything. And they're the AFC champions. And so I say that because. And I think that's particularly the case for a young team that there's. There usually ends up being a wide range of outcomes that can happen. Which is. Which is both. Well, I guess depending on if you're glass half full, that's empty, it could be. It could be really exciting or really terrifying. Right. Because it could go. But we're really excited about the, particularly the young core that we have on both sides of the ball, and we've got to continue to grow them and develop them. Obviously, we've got to see how our, you know, our quarterback position shakes out. But we really like the group of players that we've brought in, particularly the past two off seasons, and we like the progress that we've made. I can't sit here and say I have a crystal ball and can predict, you know, what, you know, what that's going to mean in terms of wins. And truth be told, there's also a little bit of luck for sure. Right. Whether it's with injuries or something along those lines. But, you know, we expect to be a competitive team and we expect to be playing our best football later in the year, you know, as this group continues to grow and play together.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Okay, look here, I'm telling you, listen, I might, I might actually root for
Ice Cube Big Three Announcer
you
James 'Deebo' Harrison
for Two, you know, you know, maybe three, you know, you know, you know what those games go be okay.
Andrew Berry
I, I, I can take that, James. I got, I'm good with that.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
I'm good with that. Hey, A.B. you've been around since, what is it, 2009, right?
Andrew Berry
Yes.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Okay, so you've been around since 2009. Is it anything that, you know, I would say in the league as far as maybe rule changes, whatever it may be that you may, that you would want to see be implemented, either brought back or taken away?
Andrew Berry
Oh, that is a great question. Boy, put me on the spot right there, James.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
I was just, yeah, I'm thinking I
Andrew Berry
gotta think about that.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
I know me, I know me. I know what you want back Debo. You know what I hate? I want back them four man wedges. I want to see who really wanted.
Andrew Berry
I, I've got to be honest, I'll say. I, I admittedly was maybe a little bit skeptical with the new kickoff rule. I was curious of how it was going to play out. I actually think it's very much been a net positive in terms of the plays that we get and then even just the, the safety component as well. I think, I think that's been, I think that's been very, very well done.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Yeah,
Andrew Berry
you know, I, I think James is going to appreciate this one. I think maybe some of the quarterback protection rules are a little bit extreme.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Please. Thank you. Just a little, just a little, just
Andrew Berry
like, just, just a little bit.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
At least call it like forcible hit.
Joe Hayden
Yeah, yeah.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Instead of just touching him like, let me get at least a swing, something 350.
Joe Hayden
Trying to get their body weight on, off. It's crazy, right?
James 'Deebo' Harrison
I'm landing on him, I'm dropping my hands. Where you ain't drop off enough. I put my hands down
Joe Hayden
and then
Andrew Berry
what I'd like to see, I'd actually like to see the incorporation of more replay and technology. So to point to your point with the, with the qb, you know, hit, hit, you know, hit that. I think that's a call that we should be right 100% of the time.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Right?
Andrew Berry
Like we can, we can. The sum where it looks like, okay, he really hits him on the shoulder pad, but you know, his head drops and we, and we get those calls right?
Amazon Health AI Advertiser
Wrong.
Andrew Berry
I think that that's something that we should be able to, you know, replay assist and, and, and, and, and get right. And then I know, you know, we're doing a lot of, you know, chip in the ball type technology. I, I like to see us continue to advance there just because you see the impact that could have in some of the other sports, whether it's you know, Euro soccer and everything like that. And like even like camera angles at the boundary lines like right at the end zone that you get in the prime time games, but you don't necessarily get in the one o' clock game to see if a guy scored or dropped the ball before the goal like or first down marker. I think all of those things would would be positive additions to the game.

That's right. Right, that's right.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Yeah, yeah. I mean like you know them bang bang play. It's something else too. Like we got to find a way to get like that. Like I understand the hit to the helmet, but like the incidental where he actually makes a tackle in the bottom of the helmet like touches and now it's, come on, we get like, I mean how much do you want these guys to do? You got the defense just adjusting to everything and the offense points like they're not responsible for anything.
Andrew Berry
Yeah, it's, it's, it's it's, it's, it's tough. It's, it's, it's. It's tough on the players. It's tough on the refs. Yeah, those are tough. And, and the, the penalties, they're so punitive. Right. Because they're 15 yard penalties.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
15.

Go ahead.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Because. Because he said. He said, you know, both quarterbacks, preseason. You know, it's preseason for sacks, Joe. Facts. It's preseason, though. Hey, hey, hey, Joe. Browns defense, the first quarter was cool.
Joe Hayden
First quarter, cool.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Yeah. Ah, maybe. Maybe. Oh, maybe a little bit into the second quarter, too. And then them boys crumbled a set for. What was it? They got an interception in the second quarter. And then after that. Yeah, hey, I'm gonna go to the offense, bro. It's. It's a lot. It's a lot of holes on that offensive line right now, brother. You got. You got. You got. You guys, you got some. You got some. You got some. Some shining spots. Yeah, but if you cannot block and you can't run the ball, you can't block to run the ball or pass the ball, that's a problem.
Joe Hayden
That's gonna be a problem for anybody out there playing.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
That's a problem. But your guy. Your guy, Casey Concepcion, hey, he did his thing. Listen, the first pump return. That first pump return, he got.

Ice Cube Big Three Co-Announcer
Yo.
Joe Hayden
I see. I want. You know, I just want to see some. Okay, so, Debo, what was your. What was your assessment of the game? Okay, so first. Are we gonna go quarterback? We Talking to some good. We had some quarterback.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
I tell you this. Tell me something, I'll start watching.
Joe Hayden
Okay. Start with the show.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
I thought he did. He did a whole lot better than I thought he was going to.
Joe Hayden
Ditto.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Did I tell you that, like, you know, he had, he had some, some, some. Some errant throws or, or whatever it was, but going off of what. Excuse me, Going off of what I was seeing in practice, like from, you know, what we had saw in practice and all that. I didn't, I didn't think he was going, you know, be able to do what he did. Like, he had, I think it was like, oh, he had one pass that was really sideways. But other than that, dude, it was a couple that dudes dropped. Actually, the first, I think was the first drive they did or was the second. It was the second drive they. He was in the pocket. He sat there, he delivered the ball 44. He dropped.
Joe Hayden
Yes. That would have been the conversion.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
That one could have. That one, yeah, that one could have continued. But they did get a filth goal from that one. What was it? I mean, I think for, for me, like, he just. I didn't expect much from him. I think that's what it was. I didn't expect him to be able to move like he did. Like, he showed, like he said he showed. He showed. He showed he could get up out of the pocket. Like, you know, he did almost have a pick, but I mean, that. Horseshoes and hand grenades is the only thing that counting almost. Right. But I'm just saying. So, I mean, what do you see from Watson?
Joe Hayden
This is what I'm gonna see. He did better than I expected, Debo, like you said. I didn't know what to expect coming off the injuries, you know what I'm saying? Like, athleticism. He looked smooth. He didn't look bad at all. He didn't look great. He didn't look bad. He looked like he was like, comfortable a little bit, throwing on time. The offensive line wasn't that good, so he was still kind of like pressure. He was a lot of pressure on him. So that was what it was. He didn't throw the ball too far down the field, but he was getting it out of his hands. He took the sack and then when you. The strip sack, it's just that you just can't. You gotta protect the ball. So it wasn't, it wasn't like, oh, man, desean did so good, but he didn't, he didn't do bad. It was okay.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Right. And that's the Thing like, I go and I look the door.
Joe Hayden
So that's when I was proud. I was looking at it because Deebo, I wasn't expecting nothing. I didn't know what to expect. So with that, I'm like, okay, that's good ball. And I'm not going to hate and be like, no, no, you did terrible or you did. No, that was okay. You got to protect the ball a little bit more. Took a sack, threw a little bit of Aaron passes, but you didn't throw it too far downfield. But you were efficient. We were moving around like it didn't look bad. Now when Shador comes in, the line is still not as that good. You can't fumble, bobble to snap the ball. When you throw it, they keep batting the balls down. And when you throw that pick, I hear this slipping and all that. But, like, we're in a quarterback competition right now. We're going versus the Twos. He's wide open. We have to make that throw. When I'm talking, like, when we want to be the starting quarterback for the NFL team and you're trying to take the position from DeSean Watson, we need all of that. Do you know what I'm saying? So when I'm looking at the game, it's like, Shador, you did not do that. You fumbled the snap. You were getting your balls batted down, and you threw an errant pick. Some of the deep balls that you did, you did do well. You threw some passes on time, and it looked. Look nice when that ball is jumping out of your hand.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
You know what I'm gonna say?
Joe Hayden
That looks good. You look like a real quarterback. Like, I'm like, okay, that's an arm. I like that. But now when I'm looking at, like, I'm just not gonna. That was still the other bull, the interception that you can't do that the fumble and the snap, your balls keep getting batted down and that it didn't look like you would like you took the job. So now you obviously, you're going to go play versus the Bills. You're going to be able to start the next game. You're going to get you to go with the.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
With the.
Joe Hayden
With the ones. But when you're looking at it from outside and with coach, how. Coach is talking about how he was just impressed with how desean is out there, how he's kind of just, you know, coach, for me, he's like, oh, it wouldn't be fair if Shador didn't get to start the second game.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
I'm like, right. Because you're going to get those same players.
Joe Hayden
That basically sounds like he kind of basically already you have to steal the job. Shador, it's kind of like Deshaun steal the job.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
It's his job to win.
Joe Hayden
So right now for me, I'm like fight.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
You gotta take it.
Joe Hayden
From what I seen in the game, I can agree like deshawn Watson didn't look terrible. He didn't look.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
And sure, when you came in there,
Joe Hayden
mind it be with the second team. Mind it be with. When you were out there.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Well, that's why we getting a chance next week. We'll get a chance to see next week. Him with the ones now. He'll get Casey Concepcion, he'll get that same old line. He'll, he'll, he'll. He'll get, you know, he'll get fan. He'll get, he'll get the, the weapons that, that, you know, Watson had and we'll see how, how it looks. But I'm, I'm with you, bro. Like the thing I saw that I thought Shador did better. Like Shador really ropes that ball, man.
Joe Hayden
He gets, he throws, he throws it down the field of 30 yard joints
James 'Deebo' Harrison
and it's hitting go. It don't, it don't matter where he going to. It's just, it's like, it's like a.it's like there. Wow. It may be off, but it's there. You know what I'm saying? Like it's getting there now. That was something that I noticed. And then when you go and you look at. With Watson, with Watson. Sorry. With Watson, dude, he still got it. He could still move. I thought that he was more athletic in his scramble than Shadora was.
Joe Hayden
I think he is. He is more athletic. Like Shador never was a guy that could run fast and his dad, Deion Sanders. But you know, that don't mean that Shador is four two. He's not fast. He's a legitimate pocket passer. Stand up in the pocket, throw the ball. DeSean, when I'm looking at it too, Debo is. DeSean was moving around smooth. But like that he still, I'm still
James 'Deebo' Harrison
thinking if he starts, I mean I've seen some places where he was still a little fidgety, shaky, all that.
Joe Hayden
But if you're running like that, you could still be getting almost two years, you're gonna be getting hit.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
What is it how long he ain't played? Two, three years.
Joe Hayden
This is first action since like 630. 630 some days.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Okay. So over two years. Well, a little over close to two years. And this is what I get. I see. And then, you know, comparatively to what Shador did, I see why we are where we're at now. Like, he's good. Shador is going to have to come out there and take this.
Joe Hayden
Yeah.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Like, if you come out and it's any, you know, any closeness of this competition, I just don't even.
Joe Hayden
It's looking like they're leaning because we just hearing from top monkeys where the head coach, he's telling it's a competition. He's saying he's feeling more comfortable with the way that Deshaun Watson is kind of running it. So for my. I was always, I'm Shador. I won't want Shador to go out there and start. But when I'm looking at now, okay, this is our first game. It's still the first preseason game. I'm gonna be honest. It didn't look like obviously he didn't have the ones he wasn't starting. But to. You gotta outplay. You want to see him out there looking like he's outplaying, you know what I'm saying? Like, from there next game, hopefully he's gonna go against the Bills, go out there and spaz. You gotta go crazy. But it's looking like Todd is kind of leaning there. But for me, Shador still. When you get out there, though, we need balling.
Hyundai Hope on Wheels Spokesperson
We do.
Joe Hayden
We know. We know what time it is. You know what I'm saying? We can't just be having, like, batted balls all the time, just having stuff. It got to be looking smooth, bro. Gotta look smooth.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Yeah. I think you. Like you said, you get him out there, he gets. He gets the same. Excuse me. The same personnel is. Watson had this game, and I'm thinking he's going to have to go out there and he's going to have to put in a nice performance if he's going to have an opportunity to take this away performance. And I hate to say it, but Watson would have to come in behind him and not have as nice.
Joe Hayden
We're going to see this.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
He goes in and they both do the same thing. I see Watson getting the starting position.
Joe Hayden
Yeah. From.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
From me.
Joe Hayden
I wanted what I was expecting to have what I thought was going to happen with Shador being able to go out there and just perform at a very high level. But now just hearing the information, seeing what we saw. Well, he only.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Listen, he only got a quarter.
Ice Cube Big Three Announcer
One quarter.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
No, no, that's not the whole set. Course so that's why we got.
Joe Hayden
I'm just trying to go get.
Bank of America Advertiser
He.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Go get a whole half a play. I'm hoping against the. Against the bill.
Joe Hayden
I'm just saying, though, if we're looking at it from the perspective of just everything that we've been seeing from the coach saying that he's going to go out there and play, start at practice, and he doesn't start, then Deshaun Watson goes out there and he starts the first preseason game. Coach is speaking very, very highly of him and says it wouldn't be fair to give Shador the second game start. I'm like, damn, you kind of almost handed it to him, you know, not handed it to him, but it's like you going like, it wouldn't be fair if he didn't.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Hold on, hold on, hold on. What you said he. It wouldn't be fair to give him, brother.
Joe Hayden
They saying, like, oh, like is.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
When did. Hold up, hold up, hold on. I thought you said it wouldn't be fair for him to not.
Joe Hayden
It wouldn't be fair for him not. Not to get the start. Yes. So he's. He's starting the second game. He said it wouldn't be fair for him not to get.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Okay, all right.
Joe Hayden
I'm like this. That's. That's. I mean, that. That's obvious with my just listening to it. It's kind of like he kind of already knows a little where he wants to go like that. When you hearing it from that perspective, do you see what I'm saying?
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Like, listen, Joe, you've been around me too long. You reading in between.
Joe Hayden
I'm tell you this, Debo. I'm just realizing, though.
CarMax Advertiser
For real.
Ice Cube Big Three Announcer
For real.
Joe Hayden
Sometimes if you listen hard enough, they gonna. They telling you what. What they want, what they want. You know what I'm saying?
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Like, it ain't always about what they say, what they do. It's about what they don't say and what they do, what they do say and what they.
Joe Hayden
You got to take in everything. You gotta take in everything.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
You gotta take in everything, Joe. And I think. And listen, Joe, you starting to. You're starting to wise up a little bit, and you know what I'm saying? You getting there, man. Cause keep watching, Joe.
Joe Hayden
Then the boy, Dylan Gabriel went in there. You seen Dylan went in there, too.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Hey, listen, man, Dylan ain't in the conversation.
Joe Hayden
I'm just saying. Look, I'm. I'm.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Now, what are we talking about, brother? Dylan went 5 or 8 for 22 yards, one interception. I understand he was sacked twice because he was in with the. But he ain't got a chance.
Joe Hayden
Yeah, yeah, we gotta get. Yeah, I just had to put it. I just, you know, because, look, this all I'm saying. This.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
This what?
Joe Hayden
This all what? This all I'm saying.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
What happened to the other boy.
Joe Hayden
Hopefully he gets a shot. But this all I'm saying, though, Debo, when I'm watching this and I'm looking at our quarterbacks and the line and everything that's going on and then.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
Hold on. Who's our quarterback?
Joe Hayden
Our quarterbacks. We just got off the phone just now with our boy Andrew Berry, right now. We talking about our. I was talking. We were talking about the Browns. Talking about deshawn Shedeur and Dylan. And then, then I'm like, just it. Just when I was watching it, I'm like, yo, why couldn't it just be a little bit, like, smoother? Like, like the Steelers was like, like, like, like Mason. Like, like, like, like aller. Like Howard. That looks smooth.
Ice Cube Big Three Announcer
My quarterback.
Joe Hayden
Three quarterbacks. No, my quarterbacks. No.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
My quarterback.
Joe Hayden
No. No fogginess. No finag.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
You're talking about my quarterback.
Joe Hayden
And they're like, they weren't. They weren't Drew out. Wasn't Drew playing with the tools.
James 'Deebo' Harrison
You talking about my quarterback? Talking about my quarterbacks.
