So you don't do that pack, you just sitting there and boom. You know what I'm saying? Like he's giving him things. I think that as he said, like, it's going to get him to be able to get the ball out faster, you know, recognize things. He's not changing like, like a Tim Tebow where they like, oh, we about to change his whole throwing motion to make him a better player. He gonna be great. No, you can't do that, man. Been throwing the ball like that since he was knee high to a grasshopper. You ain't gonna be able to change that now. I think, I think this is some things, you know, and I'm not, you know me, I'm not really that much of Mike Daniels fan, but I feel like these are things that can actually help him because they're, they're, they're smaller things that you've had other quarterbacks be able to do and change and be, you know, be more effective. So I think that this, you know, is something that will, you know, could actually help him. You know what I'm saying?

I would say this, Mike McDaniel, love you to death. But when you got a quarterback, I would say more just give it as an option. Not telling the man, you gotta change your footwork. Do you know what I'm saying? I'm like, dude, he's been in the league for now, eight, nine years. New quarterback like some Rich Gannon, seven years.

He said he didn't even know how he was playing quarterback until he met Mike McCarthy.

But Rich Gannon, when he was first and he wasn't Justin Herbert. Justin Herbert's been balling, he's been making some pro bowls, been throwing the ball really, really well. I don't think it's been him all the time. Like he's been having some injuries to his hand, but the way that he throws him, being able to get it out there, like, that's kind of, that's kind of what he does. So, I mean, obviously telling somebody like giving them options. Like, you know what? Maybe try this, you know what I'm saying? Seeing if it works so they can do some stuff. But like, no, what you're going to do is switch your right foot and forward and be your left foot. I'm like, if it doesn't feel right, then you've been playing a certain way his whole life, you know what I'm saying? So I'm like, I like the fact of just trying to give him an inch or just trying to give him a, a little something that could help him out. But if that thing really, if it doesn't, you know what I'm saying? Being comfortable to be like, okay, like, you just can't. I don't want like a force change. Put your other foot forward because your ass is out there throwing it crazy. I'm like, hold on now. What if it doesn't make him feel good? Like when I had to press, you're saying they would tell you, Joe, like, put your foot up here or something. Like, okay, I like if I have an option as a change up, but like, maybe that shit doesn't feel right, you know what I'm saying? I still, I know how I can get there. Do you know what I'm saying? So.

Okay, I understand. I understand what you're saying. But if his throwing mechanism or his throwing mechanisms is always. That his whatever foot is back, why not start you in that position so as soon as you catch, it's gone. I ain't got to flip.

Okay, okay, okay. No, I feel, I feel you. I feel you. It just I. The quarterbacks being in the spots for long, I'm like, yeah, if it's a millisecond of him being able to get the ball out faster and he's not making a big deal about it, then it's not a big group.

And you got Justin. He's saying, you know what? It's not really that big a difference. You know, he's saying it's not much of a change. It's not, you know, it's not too much of a, of a difference, you know what I'm saying? And now if that works and he's able to get that ball out a little faster, like you said, every, every second counts. Every, every inch counts, every. Every millisecond counts. It don't matter. You know, every. Like it's the difference between having the ball tipped or picked or even getting it through and having a touchdown or, you know, so on and so forth.

No, no, for sure, like, milliseconds. You want to gain as much as you can. So if that ends up having this foot back so he can get that, the. The three step, the one step, you know what I'm saying? Quick game, out, faster, solid.

Yeah, yeah, I understand that. So, I mean, I don't. You know, as long as Justin is saying, it's not that big of a difference. Now, if he goes to where he's like, yo, you. You might be going a little bit too much where you. You trying to, like, you trying to change mechanics and. And all that other stuff. That's. That's. That. That's different. You can't. You can't go in because, oh, I want him to, you know, throw it with his hands at a certain level, because that's going to. No, no. You can't have a dude running around like this all day. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's just.

He's been throwing that thing for 4,000 yards, brother.

Right, right, right. I understand foot placement because if you're, like I said, if you're going and you're switching your feet, and that's like me, like, like lining up on the outside, I always lined up with a little bit of a tilt, and I have my foot to where it's. My outside foot a little wider. Why do I do that? Because if I got back and forth, I don't want to have to go ahead. And the first thing I need to do is lift up my outside foot and move it out. If I got to do that right, I'm starting in the hole if I already got that foot sitting there. Now when he goes to step to me, I don't have to rush to try and read it. I could take my time. Now I see him stepping to me, now I can take that foot and jam him. Instead of me stepping out, I'm stepping 45 at him. And now I'm cutting down that edge. And now I'm making it tighter so it gives me a better chance of actually making the play and making it tighter for the other guys to be able to get there. Where if you're a guy that's just. You just lining up there, you just going by the book. My outside foot on they foot, and there's no. You ain't got. You ain't got nothing there. And now you sitting there and you got guys that are just. They trying to play it so tight because they want to read and hurry up and step and then the tight End give you one of these right here. His head in, but he step out, and now they jump in. You know what I'm saying? So I'm like, yo, you ain't got. Why are you rushing to. To. To jump down inside? You got. You got backer anyway. It ain't like you in a six where you got to read him. If you in a six and you head up. Yeah, now I got to read him. And then I tell him that. I say, hey, listen, don't crowd him. Why you want to crowd him? Well, I want to get on him fast. No, he knows where he's going. You don't. Give you some space so that you can see where he's stepping. Now you can go and get to him and use your power to push him back. Because once he goes, that's all he has is the advantage of knowing where he's going. Once you get there, you give him the power. You push into him and lock his ass out and push him back like they want to sit up. I'm trying to leave that outside reading. No, no, no. You got. You. You reading him.

Anyway.

Your job is to play a six. So that means if he steps out, you go and you jam him and you push him back. You try and shorten the edge. If he step in, you going. The read means you're tight. Your corner right here, he coming down. So if he goes and try and cut you off, you stay into that C gap, your corner coming down, and he got. He got that outside, like, you just can't get reached and cut off so fucking fast that now you shorten the edge, and now it allows the tackle to circle around you and get to your corner. Now we stuck like Chuck.

Oh, now I'm. Now I'm mad.

You on fire. I'm like, dang, bro, you got.

Deebo, the thing that you're saying is, when we had the tight end, nub, tight end, like, I would try to be right on his outside. I'm like, no, Jody, you need to be 2 yards wide and 4 yards back so you can have a little bit more angle to come down and give him some force instead of you trying to come down so close. And they just knocking me right off to the side.

They just pushing you out because you ain't had no force. To get them to even stop that momentum.

That's what I'm saying. So I was instantly. When I did that, I knew you gotta widen up a little bit. And then now you're reading them. Coming down on his outside shoulder 10. When I'm too close, I don't have no power. I need to be able to be back a little bit with the angle so I can see. I need to come down to that and be able to keep my outside arm free. Boom. So I can be able to set the edge. If I'm too close, he could just push me out and there's no edge. I'm just widening it up. If I can come down and really stamp, Boom. Now I know I'm outside on free. Nobody's getting outside here. They have to go inside. So just like that, legit, widen up a little bit. I was always trying to be tight because I was worried about covering the Titan. He's trying to run an overrun. I'm like, bump that, dude.

You got speed. You got all that.

[Joe Haden]

You. No, no, no. For sure, for sure. But that's what I'm saying. It just. Just knowing, like, we're all make sure

that if he crawling down there to block you, you hold that edge. I need you to come down there with that 45, 4 yards. Yes, I need you.

Yes.

And if he's going to run a route, he's not gonna come like he's going to block you because he's trying to get the hell away from you. Because you already know he's at a disadvantage.

Yes. I'm sitting there and now you got to go deep. I'm five yards off you. You're running. I'm faster than you. So now I'm a slip. Anything you try to run.

Yes. Listen, man, now. Now that's coaching. Your coach goes. Your coach go tell you that he gonna give you that feedback because with the book gonna tell you, hey, outside, right here, lined up. You can't do that. You. You victim weight. You need to be able to come down. You got speed that he don't have. You can.

Kevin Green came in and taught me that, and it changed the whole trajectory of my career from him coming in and doing that. Like, dude, he was giving us the bull. Like, we watched his tape, dude, of how he would bull rush dudes. And you seeing you like, he's bull, he's bull rushing. Like the big giant tackles, you know, dude, that was a 360, man. Boom, boom. Some people just get into a habit of maybe lowering their head. And then sometimes it's not about you having bad tackling habits. You may just hit somebody the wrong way. You. You come in and, you know, that was a timing thing. He's not looking to actually hit that guy with his Head. He was looking to get his head across. But, you know, when you obviously lower your head, then you. You put yourself in a position that it's going to, you know, that's going to go. Go down through. Go down through your spine. So it's not that he was. I don't think he was taught bad tackling. I think it was just a situation where, you know, it. The timing of what. What happened and all that. And then some guys, you know, you go in there and you're trying to protect yourself, and that's really what it comes down to. And some guys, the where, as we say, I tell, I tell, I tell, guys, put your face in the fan. Like, you got to put your face in the fan. What that mean? I want you to see what you hit. So when I tell my sons, I say, hey, this right here, put this on them. Why put this on him? Because if you put this on him, you're seeing what you're hitting. I don't want you putting this. Because now you're lowering your head, you still protect yourself. You put your neck at that 45, which means now when you hit, you bow back like this instead of dropping your head like this. And now it's jams down where you hit. Here, the brow, it bows back. So that's something that I'm real like, hey, see what you hit? Put that brow on them. Put your face in the fan.

And, you know, nobody is taught to, you know, lower their head. Nothing like that. It just, it, it. Some guys lower their head lower than they should because of just. It's just out of habit. And you're able to get away with it for so long that it now becomes how you tackle. And it's hard to. To, you know, to change up after you've been doing it so long. So here's the issue is that, you know, you're being taught as a child by somebody who is probably trying to live their dream through you because they want to coach at the level where, like our best coaches should be, at the. At the level of kids. Why? Because I want to teach you the proper way. That's the whole reason I never let my kids play context until I was able to see what they were being taught, you know, and, and I ain't gonna lie, they were teaching some things that was just out of control. Like, get your head out the way and grab and tackle and let him know. No, no, put your head across. Why? Because it's harder for them to run through all of this, get up across than it is for them to run through this. And now you're taking a chance of. Now you got guys that's getting shoulder issues, all that. You're tearing up shoulders.

Because you're trying to tackle his whole body and stop him here and getting your head out of the way. It doesn't. You know, it.

It's not. It's not conducive to having a long career, dude. It's just not. I mean, I know they long. Heads up. Get your head out the way. Head out the way. Nah, that's tackling the bag behind. You know how you do. They roll the donut and now you're tackling behind. No, that's head across. I'm like, go ahead and do your drill so you can do your heads up. You know, certification that they gotta get to be able to do what they want to do. But when it comes time for the actual real stuff, they got to do so much of that throughout the course of the year and then really teach them how to tackle to protect themselves, you know what I'm saying? So that they don't go out there and get hurt.

Yep. Because that, I mean, even from a jit when we were playing Little League when you were and coaches would never want you to. When you. You got to see what you hit. And it will be. It happens fast, like when you're playing. And then, boom, when you're a kid, like, you instantly with your head down, you would hear your coach, whoa, whoa, whoa. Head up, head up. Get your head out of there. Like, that's just something. But when you're playing sometimes then when your head hits that, you're. The helmet is messing people up. Like when we were Little League, like, dudes are the smaller dudes. They coming down there and they know if you get hit with your helmet, the crown, you're going to fold the other person. So it is like, it's a safety thing big time. But coaches definitely don't. I've never heard a coach really like pushing that. They always want to tell you, whoa, whoa, whoa, because it can't. You'll get away with it until you don't. You know what I'm saying?

Right. And that's the problem as a kid. You can get away with it because your bones aren't. And your power, the speed that you come with isn't as significant as it is as you get older and you get faster and you get stronger. Now you done gotten to a thing where you done got through it through pee wees. You done got through it, through high school, and now you get into college, and now these dudes is fast, they strong, and you can't. You can't get away with that stuff, you know, all the time. Sometimes you get that, right? Sometimes you get that stinger. You know what I'm saying? And now? Yeah, now. Okay, cool. You got the stinger or whatever. But at what point do you actually like, like be taught the correct way? And sometimes guys don't. Don't get that teaching and get it reinforced with being like, hey, get your head up, get your head up, get your head up. I don't want you see. If I see you out there dropping your head again, I'm gonna pull your ass up out there.
