Although yesterday I did a little short show about the three team trade that happened. It's still eating me because at the end of the show, I was going through Dallas's roster for next season. I said, olivia Maxon Prosper is on the Mavericks roster because I was looking through their roster and he's still being paid by the Mavs because he was waived by them last year. And I said he was going to be on the roster next year, but he's a grizzly and it's still eating at me. So I had to get that off my chest. It's off my chest.

His mane was trimmed so nicely. But he's disgusting is what he said. Then his spit turned green after a while. But great horse.

That's fun. Like if you can get on a horse like on a like more advanced rides where they take you like trotting. Trotting is tough because it's like a up and down.

And, but like, portions of it were like the, we were on a full on gallop, like through the forest kind of thing. Yeah, it was awesome, man.

We weren't flying around. No, it was slow. But yeah, the whole thing was premeditated. We know what we're doing. The horse knows what it's doing. Goes through water, takes a sip of water, it trots on rocks. I was kind of worried looking down at the water. It's all rocks, but their hooves are no problem. They know how to ride through that. Yeah, I don't want to fall on rocks anyway.

All right, so getting back here into the studio, it was fun, obviously, to be back here in the studio. I was debating, what kind of show are we doing? Are we talking about summer league and the Golden State warriors winning the thing?

No, no. Although it was a fun ending because I. There aren't many memorable summer league moments where you say, I remember 2014. This one is kind of cool where the warriors won Yaxel Lindenborg 1 MVP. And he was interviewed after, he said, we came back on the Grizzlies because their butts were too tight. It's a good, that's a good quote. It's a good quote for summer league. It's a really good quote. So I debated that, I debated as LeBron still making his decision, should we just go over his career, the best moments of his career? I said, nah, nah, not, let's take it off the court with LeBron. Wanted to look at everything, you know, the whole breadth of it, just to consider everything that he has done off the court because it's been a long time that he's been playing and sometimes you lose some things with a player here in the NBA where the guy's been around for 23 years. So I decided, let's look at the 20 most iconic off court moments for LeBron through these last 23 years. Whether it's holding the US flag at the Olympics or Taco Tuesday or becoming a billionaire, we'll get to all of that. But I want to start with him becoming a villain in 2010. It's sort of chronological that we'll go through here and we'll start in 2010 when the decision happened. I don't know if you remember this, Judy, but was an hour.

And not only long, the broadcast itself, but just the excruciating weight to find out what he was doing, especially for the people of Cleveland, and then for it to be announced that it. He was going to make his announcement on this TV show.

In 2026. It seems impossible that someone would do that, especially somebody who's so media savvy.

And you know, we'll get to more media savviness as the years go on. But to spend that much time sitting in front of the Boys and Girls Club as they had to sit awkwardly there for so long and you've got the fridge of vitamin water sitting there and obvious sponsorship. I, I went back and watched a chunk of was so cringy. It was just so difficult to watch. I wonder what the mentality was back then. Was it to soften the blow that I'm leaving Cleveland and this allows me to kind of elaborate and, and just speak on everything. I mean, it kind of feels like,

I don't know, it felt like he was going to try to explain himself, but it ended up making it way worse for people. It did raise money for charity though.

This is true. This is a good point.

But also it's a small consolation for the Cleveland fans who are literally getting dumped on live television.

Yeah. And now it's sort of the absolute reference for players how to not announce what they're doing in free agency. You just absolutely cannot do this. And any corrected himself years later. But that's what this is. I, I think now it's just a reference point how not to do it. Yeah, you just rip the band aid off. That's what it comes down to.

Yeah, we're done talking about that moment. But we, you know, stay chronologically. The villain at number two of these 20 moments remains because later that year, he announced. Well, he, He. He was part of the Heat press conference where the whole thing happened with him and Wade and Bosch, where they introduced themselves and how many titles they were going to win. Not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven. And obviously they didn't do that. And I wonder if he didn't do the decision months earlier, if this still keeps him as a villain, if this event is. Is strictly an indicator of how much of a villain he was. You know, it become less of a villain if he didn't have that whole right decision. Part of. In part. I, I would assume.

It did not. But this is memorable in terms of. Yeah, just this was a time in. In LeBron's career where, again, it's 2010 before any titles happened. This is, this is the villain era of LeBron.

Anyways, those are. Those are more memorable moments than riding a horse. But. But anyway, I needed to reference that because is. You gotta go, J.D.

Very much so for LeBron go from villain to returning with an essay that he wrote in 2014 titled, I'm Coming Home Telling Cleveland, yeah, I messed up, but I shall rectify everything that I did. Total reversal in tone and format from the decision. Obviously, it was. It was quiet. It was a first person essay, and it was his redemption arc. The line that stands out is, quote, in Northeast Ohio, nothing is given, everything is earned. I'm ready to accept the challenge. I'm coming home. And that's the extent of it. Him and Lee Jenkins wrote this thing.

So moving on from there, it's two Building the Empire events for LeBron that stand out. And let me know what I missed here. We'll get to more of the fun off the court stuff, but I had to include some financial and money decisions that he made first. I had totally forgotten about this, but it is monumental in 2014, the Beats by Dre payout that he received. Because when Apple acquired Beats by Dre in 2014 for 3 billion, LeBron famously had made an estimated $30 million in cash in 2014. It's a lot of money. 1314, his salary was $19,067,500. So he received $30 million. But it's not just that. He had a 1% equity stake in Beats Co. Years earlier in exchange for promoting the headphones. And so that kind of set a new standard for athlete business ventures. You invest in. In things rather than just, you know, make money off of it. It's kind of what our former colleague Shaquille o' Neal did as well. Always making sure he had equity in the general or. Yeah, so that's similar here. He made $30 million in cash plus whatever equity stake he had. According to Kendrick Perkins in an interview in 2020, he said LeBron made $700 million in. In this whole Beats by Dre purchased by Apple promotion deal. Now, 700 million sounds absolutely nuts. I can't really quantify how many dollars or dollars, you know, as a non billionaire, as a non millionaire, you know, but. But still, this is just important for him and other athletes who, yeah, aren't going to make as much as LeBron, but have a guide here in LeBron James.

Yeah, I mean, Apple bought Beats for 3 billion, I think. So whatever he ended up. So he. He. You're saying he made 700 million off of that deal?

Yeah, well, he. He was. He had a 1% equity stake, so he made 30 million according in cash. But yes, according to Kendrick Perkins because of the promotional side of things and how much he had in equity stake. It's really just a very generic number that he threw out there. It sure feels like it doesn't feel. Doesn't feel real. But all in all, as. Yeah, Dre was paid. Paid $3 billion or the business was paid $3 billion. Apparently LeBron received at the. It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for him to receive that much money.

The math isn't mathing in my mind. But also, I mean, it's possible and Right. You know, he. He didn't invest any money in Beats. Right. It was simply his endorsement, which is. It's crazy that, that amount of money for wearing a. A pair of decent headphones. I'm not going to say they're top of the line, but they're decent and they look. They looked cool at the time.

Yeah, that's fine. All right, moving on. LeBron signed a lifetime deal with Nike in 2015. It's as simple as that. It's just that glorious for him. It is such an achievement, a lifetime deal. I mean, what it does mean that Nike bet on him as an institution, not just a player. Over a decade before this Nike era, conversation was happening in earnest, apparently, and it peaked in 2015. I guess winning does everything because he had won two titles recently before that, or maybe it's just because he was LeBron, but a lifetime deal is a lifetime deal. So that achievement that he always said he had an aspiration and this love, a desire to be involved with Nike and admired it. So simple as that. Just a quick one there because there's a, you know, a couple of those building the empire moments for LeBron that were important.

What do you think the contract actually says? Like, this expires when you die. Because now with like, holograms and stuff, you could. And AI and whatever else, just. Just CGI in general. He could be endorsing Nikes after he passes, right?

all right, moving on to media production Now I'm going to start this with a more funny thing that we always remember with Lebron James before getting into his TV and production empire. I. I love. Actually recently heard Channing Fry, his former teammate, say, lebron stole that from me. The athlete mold form that he wanted to and that any athlete kind of wants to. You know, we're just talking sports here. Draymond's been on everybody. A lot of people have been on it.

In 2018, after LeBron and Durant, they had a sit down interview with Kerry Champion where they were critical of President Trump. Fox's Laura Ingram told him to shut up and dribble. And LeBron turned it into a title for a nine episode doc he executive produced on Showtime. So that that kind of full circle response from an athlete is again, similar to what I said. It's, it's a leader. I say, I hear you giggling over there.

Yes, absolutely. Yeah, he, he did that. And what I was surprised was here moving to the, the, the 10th of our 20 moments where he feuded publicly with Donald Trump. It was an infamous tweet. It was back in 2017. It was about the warriors not going to the White House. I was surprised that he still has this up. Kudos to him for keeping it up, you bum. Yes, yes. LeBron tweeted, quote, you bum. Stephen Curry already said he ain't going, so therefore ain't no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up. And he kept that up. And then he turned that public feud into organized action. He founded more than a vote in 2020, again responding the way he wanted to respond and creating a clapback for himself. Simple as that. Those two things there, as far as activism goes, even though there will be more and there is one here with more, more of a legacy activism in 2018 or 11th of 20 things that LeBron did off the court. He opened the I Promise school in Akron in 2018, which was same time he was leaving Cleveland to go to la. But he had already planned to open this. It's designed specifically to help at risk students by providing specialized STEM curriculums, extended school years and comprehensive family wraparound support. And as LeBron said, he started it with 240 kids, 120 in third grade and 120 in fourth grade. And as he said, quote, I believe that's where it all kind of starts. And that's where it started for me, you know, fourth grade, I missed 80 days of school, end quote. So he made sure that this I Promise school was there in Akron to support kids. So that will live on forever, I'm sure, for a very, very long time. So good for LeBron to do that. And there's is the activism portion of the the 20 list. But he's done so much, as you said, even during the decision, J.D. i mean, it's not activism, but yeah, the charity Giving Back.

Thanking his family and, and thanking everybody who contributed to it. And also said, quote, man, thank you guys. You know, another swear. Always got to appreciate that when he was just himself. And you can see, I could see as, as he said, man, a member, a person who works with the NBA immediately smiled as he swore right behind him because he was just being himself. So, yeah, it's a sneaky basketball one in there, but to me it was more about the moment, the moment, the whole thing. We are talking about a basketball player. You got the record. And then during the ESPYs that year he was awarded because he became the all time leading scorer. And then he was on the mic there. That's something I trimmed out all the time when he, he spoke at the ESPYs. But yeah, there's that one great moment. Yeah. Moving on to a few here as we end it, a couple surrounding the Olympics and his family because in 2024, he carried the US flag at the opening ceremonies. The first basketball player as far as males go to do that, which was a very nice moment. Of course, you were watching the, the opening ceremony, J.D. on that, on that rainy boat, LeBron holding that flag. And yeah, it's kind of a full circle from the 08 Redeem Team era that he was a part of as well. So him bringing the USA back from the O4 Olympics and of course losing to Greece in the 06 world championship fever Cup. Now it's called. Yeah, I'm sure we'll talk about that later. It's a 20 year anniversary in, wow, six weeks wow. Yes. But, yeah, LeBron got to be the first male US basketball player to do it. Don Staley did it for the women in 2004 in Greece. So, yeah, simple as that. You get to hold the flag.

I'm like, this is. The Paris Olympics were so perfect. It felt like other than the. In the scent, it was. It kind of went off without a hitch. And the backdrop of Paris was so spectacular. And I was like, how's LA gonna be after Paris? But after the World Cup, I'm pumped. But like the. Just the way US Mexico. But there were games in la. I think it's going to be awesome. I can't wait. Yeah, it's allowed. At the same time, he didn't play with him a ton. So you could say this is more just about him being out there together. But at the same time, they did play. They did chant Ronnie Brownie whenever LA went to go play in Cleveland, he ended up passing an alley oop to Bronnie in the playoffs in 26. Here it's two full seasons start in 24. And Bronny was able to finish that alley oop, which he could have missed because it was an up and under sort of finish. It wasn't a dunk, it was a finish on the other side that he was able to finish with his off hand. So it was a sweet, sweet moment for those two. Simple as that. Two seasons of Bronnie playing with Bronnie, LeBron playing with his son.

What is going to happen these next couple years? And will there be a farewell tour in that final year? Will he come out and say at the beginning of the season, this is it? Yeah, that's a great, really good. And it's a good debate because everyone thinks, oh, LeBron loves the ceremony and all that, that whole aspect. But I wonder if he will. I sure do think, you know, as we sit here on Monday, July 20, that it's going to be more than one season that he plays. He ain't done after the next season, I don't think, you know, physically, if he can't, then he'll decide it'll be over. But it feels like he's, he's going Tom Brady style and going till whenever he can. So that's, that's how. Just me wrapping it up, wondering, where do we go from here? Yeah, simple as that.
