In an era where radio and MTV was still relevant and Bandcamp and Spotify were right around the corner, Guster's Keep It Together proved the group had much more to say beyond their typical 2 guitarists and a percussionist gimmick. From banjos to flugelhorns to the "frightening double-necked string instrument" played by none other than Ben Kweller this album truly runs the gamut from folk to psychedelic rock. For a band that talked a lot about getting "their break" on the radio, Keep It Together proved their music had something much more profound to say than the dime a dozen pop singles of the era. On this episode we dive into The Guest, the 2002 breakout record from Phantom Planet that proved they were far more than just “the band from The O.C.” While “California” would eventually become unavoidable thanks to television fame, the deeper cuts reveal a band operating at a much higher level than most people realized, blending sun-soaked power pop with vulnerable, emotionally charged songwriting and flashes of restless garage rock energy. In lieu of our latest episode on Phantom Planet's "The Guest" from 2002, we're dropping a Rewind on an episode that was released way back in July of 2020, where we cover their self-titled album that came just two years later. Phantom Planet was once most notably known as the group that sings that song from The O.C. (you know, the one that goes "California, here we come!"). But on their 2004 self-titled record, they traded in those melodic, poppy song structures for a more frenetic, fuzz-driven garage sound. We argue in this episode that this is perhaps one of the greatest garage rock records to come out of the early 2000s (certainly one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated), with its impassioned vocal performances, pummeling drums and bass, and guitar riffs that could punch through a wall. On this episode we dive into the raw, cathartic beginnings of Foo Fighters' self-titled debut. Written and recorded almost entirely by Dave Grohl, the record feels like a personal reset button. It’s loose, loud, and surprisingly melodic, packed with the kind of deep cuts that hint at everything the band would eventually become once fully realized.
