Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. Former Congressman Matt Gaetz is facing intense scrutiny over his fitness to become U.S. attorney General. That includes scrutiny over renewed Alleg allegations that are central to a House Ethics Committee probe into Gates. NPR's Ryan Lucas has the story.
Ryan Lucas
The House Ethics Committee was investigating Gates over allegations including sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Joel Leopard, an attorney who represents two women who testified before the committee, says one of his clients told the panel that she saw Gates have sex with a minor at a party in July 2017. He also says his clients told the committee that Gates paid them for sex. Leopard is calling on the committee to release its report on the investigation. Gates has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, and a spokesman for the Trump transition called the allegations baseless and said they are intended to derail the second Trump administration. The spokesman said Gates is the right man for the job and that he will be the next attorney general. Ryan Lucas, NPR News, Washington.

President Biden says the United States is pledging over $4 billion to the world Bank's National Development association, the money aimed at replenishing a fund that's used to help the world's poorest countries. At a summit for the world's 20 richest nations in Brazil, Biden promised that the US will continue pushing for an agreement to end the war in Gaza.

Biden told leaders at the G20 gathering that the US remains committed to Ukraine's sovereignty, that they should be as well. The Kremlin is warning against allowing Ukraine to use US Supplied missiles to strike targets inside of Russia. President Biden announced on Sunday that he had authorized Ukraine's use of army tactical missile systems to defend its forces in the Kurst region. Lebanon's Health Ministry says Israeli airstrikes hit Beirut on Monday, killing at least five people. The attacks were followed by a Hezbollah strike on Tel Aviv. NPR's Gina Raff has more from Beirut.

The airstrikes hit central Beirut, including a densely populated neighborhood near a major route to the airport, not far from a main headquarters of the un. The US has been working to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon to end what has escalated into all out war since September. Lebanon's caretaker, Prime Minister Najib Makati told Lebanese media that US Envoy Amos Hochstein was expected in Beirut for talks on an agreement. An Israeli airstrike Sunday killed Hezbollah's media chief Mohammed Hafeef, in the latest assassination of the group's leadership since it killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in September. You're listening to NPR News. A Georgia appeals court has cancelled oral arguments in the election interference case against President elect Donald Trump. The ruling came in an appeal by Trump and co defendants who were accused of trying to overturn the 2020 presidential vote results in Georgia. Four of the defendants have entered into plea agreements with prosecutors. Many Americans are struggling with how to speak to each other in these bitterly divided times. As NPR's Frank Langfitt reports from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. One pastor has answered that question by preaching the Golden Rule.

Pastor Chris Morgan leads Christ United Methodist Church, a politically divided congregation. Leading up to Election Day, he preached kindness, encouraging his flock to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

If we hold to that, then we can actually hopefully become an example for society instead of mirroring society.

Some parishioners said the sermon series helped them talk to people they disagree with and remain calm doing so. Another parishioner, though, thought it brought election politics into the church, which he sees as a sanctuary from all that. Frank Langfitt, NPR News, Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
