In Washington, I'm Jack Speier. President elect Donald Trump lost an attempt to delay his criminal sentencing in New York city today. As NPR's Jimena Bastille reports, the date is set for later this week.
Jimena Bastille
Judge Juan Merchand denied a request from Trump lawyer Todd Blanche to delay the sentencing. In his hush money trial in May, a jury found Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, and Merchan later confirmed Trump did not have presidential immunity in the case. Blanche argued in a filing on Sunday that the court should pause all proceedings while Trump's legal team appeals the immunity decision. But Merchan said Trump's lawyers repeated past claims he had already rejected. Trump's sentencing is set for January 10, just 10 days before he's sworn in to the Oval Office. Canada's Liberal prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced he's retiring after almost a decade in office. NPR's Jackie Northam says Trudeau faced mounting pressure to step down over his handling of Canada's economy and immigration.
Jackie Northam
In his resignation speech, Trudeau spoke about his deep love of Canada, but acknowledged a lack of support from voters and many members of his own Liberal Party. This is a far cry from 2015, when he was first elected prime minister and Trudeaumania swept through Canada. He had a progressive agenda, including gender equity, more taxes on the wealthy, and more action to protect the environment. But the honeymoon lasted only a few years. Inflation, housing shortages and immigration issues plagued Trudeau's agenda. His resignation comes as President elect Donald Trump is threatening 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. Trudeau will stay on as PM until the Liberal Party chooses a new leader in the next few months. Jackie Northam, NPR News.

With winter weather hitting the east, the southern tip of New Jersey saw the state's largest snowfall totals, with at least 5 inches of snow falling there. That's according to the National Weather Service. Kenneth Burns of member station WHYY reports. Other areas of the state still had to contend with slick roads and schlossy sidewalks.
Kenneth Burns
There was still enough snow to shovel and make commutes treacherous in parts of central New Jersey. Don Trower commuted to his job as a gas station attendant by E. Bicycle.
Don Trower
So, yeah, it was a little tricky. Like I said, just trying to, you know, be stable on the bike and all that stuff and not slip and fall.
Kenneth Burns
Nick Albani, a middle school history teacher in southern New Jersey, was surprised at the amount of snow which prompted his district to close for the day.
Nick Albani
I was expecting less. I was fully expecting to go in today.
Kenneth Burns
Though most roads in this part of the state are clear, officials are warning that roads could refreeze overnight as the temperatures fall. For NPR News, I'm Kenneth Burns in Hamilton, New Jersey.

A mix close on Wall street today. The dow was down 25 points. However, the NASDAQ jumped 243 points. The S&P 500 was up 32 points today. You're listening to NPR. WeGovy and Zepbound are the biggest names in obesity drugs right now, but they are not the only game in town. New research looks at a range of studies about them to draw some big picture conclusions. More from NPR's Sydney Lupkin.
Arisha Moyes
Researchers at McGill University in Montreal conducted a review of 26 randomized controlled trials of 12 different obesity drugs. These included Wegovy and Zepbound, as well as several new not yet approved drugs. The review published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found all the drugs worked, though their potency varied. Lead author Arisha Moyes says common side effects across the board tended to be nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation.
Sydney Lupkin
They occurred when they were escalating the dose of the drug and they were mild to moderate. And very few of these side effects actually required treatment discontinuation by the patient, and they seem to diminish over time.
Arisha Moyes
There were no head to head studies of the drugs included in the review, which limited its findings. Sidney Lupkin, NPR News.

In the St. Louis area, there was a brief APB out this past weekend for a small monkey wearing a pink tutu. But fortunately, before the worst of a major winter storm could hit the area, the monkey was brought to safety. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says the small monkey had been staying at a home when it managed to open a door and make a break for it. Photos on the sheriff's Department's Facebook page show a deputy kneeling on the ground where the tutu clad monkey approaches and grabs his hands. Crude oil futures prices eased a bit in volatile trading oil down 40 cents a barrel today to end the session at $73.56 a barrel. In New York, I'm Jack Speier, NPR News, in Washington.

President-elect Donald Trump faces significant legal challenges as his attempt to delay criminal sentencing in New York City has been denied.
Reporter: Jimena Bastille
Judge Juan Merchand rejected a motion from Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, seeking to postpone the sentencing related to Trump’s hush money trial. In May, a jury convicted Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Judge Merchand confirmed that Trump does not possess presidential immunity in this case. Blanche's filing aimed to halt proceedings pending an appeal of the immunity decision, but Merchand noted that Trump's legal team was reiterating arguments that had previously been dismissed.
Notable Quote:

After nearly a decade in office, Canada's Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his retirement.
Reporter: Jackie Northam
Trudeau’s resignation comes amidst growing dissatisfaction regarding his handling of key issues such as the economy and immigration. In his farewell address, Trudeau expressed his profound love for Canada but acknowledged dwindling support both from the electorate and within his own Liberal Party. This contrasts sharply with the enthusiastic reception he received upon his initial election in 2015, a period marked by the phenomenon known as "Trudeaumania."
Notable Quote:
"I had a progressive agenda, including gender equity, more taxes on the wealthy, and more action to protect the environment," Jackie Northam reports at [01:20].
Trudeau's tenure saw ambitious initiatives; however, persistent challenges like inflation, housing shortages, and contentious immigration policies eroded his support. His departure coincides with escalating trade tensions, including President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. Trudeau will remain as Prime Minister until a new leader is elected by the Liberal Party in the coming months.

The spotlight shifts to the pharmaceutical sector, focusing on obesity medications.
Reporter: Sydney Lupkin
NPR delves into recent research conducted by McGill University in Montreal, which reviewed 26 randomized controlled trials encompassing 12 different obesity drugs, including prominent names like Wegovy and Zepbound, as well as several emerging, unapproved drugs.
Key Findings:
Notable Quote:
"There were no head-to-head studies of the drugs included in the review, which limited its findings," Arisha Moyes remarked at [04:08].
The absence of comparative studies between the different medications restrains the ability to draw definitive conclusions about the superiority of any single drug. Nonetheless, the research underscores the potential of these treatments in managing obesity, albeit with manageable side effects.
