Live from NPR News in New York City, I'm Dwahali Sai Kautao. Officials in Minnesota continue to push the Justice Department to include state police in the investigation of the killing of a Minneapolis mother by an immigration agent. Matt Sepik of Minnesota Public radio reports.

Democratic U.S. senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar say in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi that excluding state authorities from the investigation raises serious questions about its objectivity. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty is asking the public for any evidence that they may have of the killing of 37 year old Renee Good. But Moriarty concedes that the FBI controls key evidence that she'd need to make a charging decision.
The FBI currently has, for example, Ms. Good Car, the shell casing and witness interviews.
Vice President J.D. vance says, quote, a bunch of radicals in Minneapolis should have no part in the investigation. For NPR News, I'm Matt Sepik in Minneapolis.

Despite officials in the US And Venezuela announcing that a significant number of political prisoners would be released from jails, so far only 10 have been freed. President Trump said the US had requested the release and that Venezuelan officials were complying. As NPR's Kerry Khan reports, relatives and.

Friends of political prisoners continue waiting in front of the infamous prison known as El Ecoide, waiting the promised releases. The mountainous multi level building was designed to be a shopping center but is known as the most feared detention facility in the country. In announcing the release on Thursday, Venezuela's congressional leader, Jorge Rodriguez, the brother of the interim president, said the move should be considered a gesture seeking peace. Those released so far include members of the political party led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado and five Spanish citizens. Human rights groups decry the paltry number of releases and say more than 800 political opponents remain imprisoned. Carrie Kahn, NPR News, Bogota, Colombia.

Protests in Iran are in its second week. The government has cut the Internet and phone lines, making it difficult to gauge the reality on the ground. The U S Based human rights Activist news agency reports at least 65 people have been killed and more than 2,300 detained. The BBC's Khazra Naji reports from Tehran.
Khazra Naji
There are reports of violent confrontations between protesters and the security forces. The Iranian Police say some 26 buildings were set on fire and the damage to property has been very extensive. The Iranian authorities have been publishing the names of dozens of members of the security forces who they say have been killed in locations which indicate the unrest has spread much wider than previously thought.

That is the BBC's Khazra Nazi reporting. And you are listening to NPR News from New York. Russia continued its attacks overnight, according to Ukraine's air force, which reported intercepting nearly 100 drones in the Dnipro region. Tens of thousands of families continue to be without power during near freezing temperatures. The fresh attacks came as Moscow used a seldom used hypersonic missile against Kyiv on Friday Friday, killing at least four people. The Associated Press also reports that a Ukrainian drone hit an oil depot, sparking a fire in Russia's Volgograd region. The Washington National Opera announced it is leaving the John F. Kennedy center for the Performing Arts, which has been its home since 1971. As NPR's Chloe Veltman reports, the opera's departure comes in response to new policies which put a strain on the opera's financial model.

In a statement to npr, the Washington National Opera stressed the amicability of its decision to end its longtime residency at the Kennedy Centre. But it said the centre's new business model, which requires productions to be fully funded in advance, is incompatible with the usual mix of ticket sales, grants and donations that cannot all be secured. Ahead, artistic director Francesca Zambelo shared her regrets in a recorded statement with npr.
Francesca Zambello
I am deeply saddened to leave the Kennedy Center.

In a post on social media, the center's executive director, Richard Grinnell, said was the centre's decision to sever ties with the opera company in order to, quote, have the flexibility and funds to bring in operas from around the world. Chloe Veltman, NPR News.
