Traveling on Air Force One back to Washington. Trump said Iranian leaders called Saturday to negotiate and said a meeting would be set up, though he didn't specify when that would take place. Trump added that the US Might still take action on Iran before a meeting takes place. The president also didn't specify what kind of action he would take on Iran, but says the military is looking into options and he's getting hourly reports on the protests. In recent weeks, protests have escalated in Iran with reports of hundreds of protesters dead and Internet blackouts. On that, Trump says he's considering calling Elon Musk to assist in providing Internet connectivity in Iran. Deepa Shivaram, NPR News, traveling with the president.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says the Justice Department has served the central bank with subpoenas and threatened the central bank with a criminal indictment. At issue is Powell's testimony about building renovations at the Fed. But in a video statement released on Sunday, Powell said as the real issue is Trump's efforts to control the nation's interest rates.
Jerome Powell
The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president. This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions, or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.

The Fed is an independent agency Trump has repeatedly attacked for not lowering key interest rates more quickly. President Trump has not yet been able to convince oil company executives that they should return to Venezuela to tap into that country's massive oil reserves. NPR's Maya Eliasson has more on our story.

President Trump has claimed that US oil companies are ready to spend $100 billion or more to rebuild Venezuela's oil industry. But on Friday, when the president met with US Oil executives at the White House, not all of them were as enthusiastic as Trump. The CEO of Exxon told the president that at this time, Venezuela is, quote, uninvestable. Venezuela has the world's largest crude oil reserves, but its infrastructure has deteriorated since it nationalized its oil industry 20 years ago and expelled most American oil companies operating there at the time. Extremely low temperatures in northern Finland stranded thousands of tourists on Sunday. The thermometer there reached -34 Fahrenheit. That made it difficult for crews to de ice the planes. And weather officials say the cold will linger on into Monday. In Germany, meanwhile, trains were delayed because of snow and high winds. And icy roads have disrupted travel in other parts of Europe this weekend. You're listening to NPR News. President Trump is once again threatening Cuba. The island nation has been a major benefactor of Venezuelan oil, but as the US has seized tankers, Cuba has lost its oil supply. In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said Cuba should make a deal before it's too late. But he didn't explain what sort of deal he had in mind. Ice hockey is well known for the fights on the ice. But Saturday at the TD arena in Boston, attention was on a fight in the stands during a Boston Bruins New York Rangers game. Witness Kerry Blythe.

We noticed that the section kind of emptied out, which was weird because the game was fully packed. And then when we looked ahead, there were a lot of Boston police officers, the detectives, they started bagging up some evidence.

A man who fell out of the balcony was hospitalized and one man was arrested. Brock Purdy threw a four yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey, leading San Francisco to a 2319 victory over defending super bowl champion Philadelphia Sunday in a wild card game. The 49ers next faced top seed at Seattle next weekend for an NFC divisional playoff game. Purdy threw for 262 yards and had two interceptions. The 49ers might be without star tight end George Kittle, who was injured in the first half. Andrea Bocelli will headline the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony that's taking place on February 6th. He will join Mariah Carey, whose performance had already been announced. A crowd of 60,000 people is expected for the event at Milan's San Siro Stadium. Millions more are expected to be watching on television. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
