In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. President Trump says Iran called the US over the weekend to negotiate. He told reporters yesterday Tehran sought to set up a meeting after he threatened military action against Iran. The that threat is worrying some Republican lawmakers. That includes Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.
Senator Rand Paul
Bombing's not the answer. Plus, there is this sticking point of the Constitution that we don't really let presidents bomb countries just when they feel like it. They're supposed to ask the people through the Congress for permission.

He spoke to ABC's this Week. Senator Paul has also supported a Senate resolution to block President Trump from taking military action in Venezuela without congressional authorization. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says the Justice Department has served the nation's central bank with a subpoena and threatened it with a criminal indictment. He says it's over renovations to the central bank's buildings. Powell says the Trump administration is trying to pressure the Fed to cave to President Trump's will on interest rates. The federal government is still beefing up immigration efforts in Minnesota. And Pierre Serrier Martinez Beltran reports federal authorities will send hundreds more agents to the state this week.
Sergio Martinez Beltran
Right now, there are more than 2,000 federal immigration agents in Minnesota. That's three times the size of the Minneapolis Police Department. This week, more Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agents are expected to come to the state to help carry out President Trump's crackdown on immigration. Multiple residents in Minneapolis neighborhoods told NPR they've seen ICE agents going door to door. Vice President J.D. vance in a recent news conference said agents were doing this to find, quote, criminal illegal aliens. ICE in the past has focused on targeted arrests. So all of this is highly unusual. But this is all part of the Trump administration's effort to deport millions from the U.S. sergio Martinez Beltran, NPR News, Minneapolis.

The trial resumes today for a former school police officer in the Uvalde school shooting in 2022. Prosecutors allege he was one of the first officers on the scene and did not go into the school to try to stop the shooting. Texas Public Radio's Dan Katz has more.
Dan Katz
Former Uvalde School police officer Adrian Gonzalez faces 29 counts of abandoning or endangering a child, one count for each child who was inside the classrooms. Nine year old Eliana Garcia was one of the children killed that day. Her mother Jennifer Garcia testified that she drove to the school after hearing about the shooting and described a chaotic scene followed by a long wait.
Jennifer Garcia
I want to say we were the second, third to last parents at the end of the day, about 9ish, 10, to find out that one of our children was one of the deceased.
Dan Katz
Prosecutors contend that Gonzalez's inaction costs lives. The defense maintains that Gonzalez was not close enough to stop, delay or distract the shooter. More parents, teachers and officers are set to testify this week. For NPR News, I'm Dan Katz.

You're listening to NPR News from Washington. Authorities in Jackson, Mississippi, say they've arrested a suspect in connection with a fire at a local synagogue, and the person has been charged with arson. No one was hurt in the fire. The blaze began Saturday in the synagogue's library, and two Torahs were burned. In 1967, the same synagogue, the only one in Jackson, was firebombed by the Ku Klux Klan. Thousands of unionized nurses at New York City hospitals are poised to go on strike this morning. The union is demanding more manageable workloads for nurses and significant increases for their security. Dozens of awards were handed out at the 83rd Golden Globes in Beverly Hills, California. One big winner last evening was the film One battle after another. NPR's Bob Mondello has more.

The Globes are widely thought to be the splashiest party of Hollywood's awards season, but they haven't always been known for seriousness. This year felt different. Paul Thomas Anderson's ferociously political satire One Battle After Another took home four Globes in the comedy or musical category, including best picture, screenplay, director and supporting actress for Tiana Taylor. Taylor Hamnet, about the death of Shakespeare's son, took best drama and best dramatic actress. Jesse Buckley. Brazil's the Secret Agent, a fiercely political film set during that country's dictatorship, took best feature not in English, and best actor drama for Walter Mora. The best actor and actress in the comedy or musical categories went to Timothee Chalamet for Marty supreme and Rose Byrne for if I had Legs, I'd kick you. Bob Mondello, NPR News.
