He has provided little additional information on that new tariff, but NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben reports. It comes as as the president is trying to ramp up pressure on Iran, where deadly protests are ongoing, Trump posted.

On social media that he plans to impose a 25% tariff on goods from any country doing business with Iran. However, the White House has not yet released an executive order imposing this tariff. In addition, much remains unclear. Trump did not reveal what law would authorize this tariff, nor whether it will stack on top of existing tariffs. According to World bank data, Iran's biggest trading partners as of 2022 included China, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates. Trump has threatened military action against Iran as the government attacks protesters there. According to a U S based monitoring group, nearly 500 protesters have died. Former treasury secretaries, economists and central bankers are warning that the Justice Department's investigation of the Federal Reserve could backfire. NPR's Scott Horsley reports. They say it could bring higher inflation and a weaker economy.

The group is speaking out after word the Justice Department served subpoenas on the Fed last week seeking information about its costly headquarters renovation and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's testimony about it. Powell says the probe is part of a long running pressure campaign by the Trump administration designed to intimidate the central bank and force it to adopt much lower interest rates. The bipartisan group of economic officials warns that's how monetary policy is typically made in much less developed countries with weak institutions. They argue such tactics have no place in the United States where the rule of law is a great source of strength and economic success. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

A federal judge scheduled a hearing Thursday on Democratic Senator Mark Kelly's request for a temporary restraining order against the Defense Department. Kelly is suing the Pentagon, saying the Trump administration is trampling on his constitutional rights to free speech. Kelly is seeking to block his censure from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over that video that called on troops to resist unlawful orders. The state of Minnesota and the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul suing the federal government seeking to block the Trump administration's surge of immigration enforcement officers following the fatal shooting of a 37 year old Minneapolis woman here's NPR's Meg Anderson in Minneapolis.

The lawsuit alleges that the surge is, quote, driven by nothing more than the Trump administration's desire to punish political opponents and to sow fear in the community here. They also allege that the tactics, tactics of federal officers here have been unlawful and are creating dangerous and chaotic circumstances and making people afraid to leave their homes.

Illinois and the city of Chicago also filed a similar lawsuit. This is npr. Apple will use Google's AI technology to power its personal assistant Siri and other AI related products. And Pierce, John Ruich reports. This comes amid pressure on Apple by critics who think it's been slow to hop on the AI bandwagon.

Apple has been promising AI enabled features in its products for months, but those plans have been hobbled by delays. Now the company is poised to team up with Google to use its Gemini AI technology, which is already among the world's most popular. In a joint statement, the companies say Google's technology provides, quote, the most capable foundation for Apple's underlying AI models. Critics have blasted Apple for being slow to develop and adopt. AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google have poured billions of dollars into developing A models and chatbots, leaving Apple in the dust. Apple and Google say the tie up is a multi year collaboration, though the announcement did not disclose the terms. John Ruich, NPR News.

Malaysia and Indonesia are now the first countries to block Elon Musk's AI chatbot known as grok. Authorities in both countries cite concerns about its misuse in generating explicit images, and both are demanding stronger safeguards. A British media regulator says it has launched an investigation. The parent company of Facebook has named a former former Trump administration official as its new president and vice chair. Meta announced Monday that Dina Powell McCormick will help guide the company's overall strategy. Her appointment is the latest in a series of changes at Meta after President Trump regained the White House. I'm Giles Snyder, NPR News.
