Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. The death toll during anti government protests in Iran now tops 2,500 people, according to the US based Human Rights activist news agency Social Media. Today, Trump told Iranian citizens, quote, help is on its way. NPR's Jackie Northam has more.
Jackie Northam (0:37)
Trump doesn't say what he means by help. He just told the protesters to keep going, take over their institutions and to say the names of, quote, killers and abusers and that they will pay a big price. Trump added that he has canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the killing stops. Before Trump's comments, we had been hearing that there was an effort using intermediaries to find a diplomatic solution to this increasingly heated rhetoric and threats between the US over these protests, but it seems that that's now broken down.

NPR's Jackie Northam reporting. Vice President J.D. vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet tomorrow with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland. NPR's Franco Ordonez reports. The meeting follows President Trump's most recent threats to take control of the island.
Franco Ordonez (1:22)
The Danish officials requested the meeting with the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, after President Trump renewed his push to take over Greenland by military force if necessary. President Trump and his top aides have repeatedly claimed that control of Greenland is a national security issue for the United States, citing Russian and Chinese activity in the region. He claims that if the US doesn't take control of the territory, Russia or China will, and that he can't allow that to happen. Greenland's prime minister says the island territory wants to remain with Denmark and will face a geopolitical crisis if it has to choose between the US And Denmark. The Danish prime minister says the future of NATO is at stake. Franco Ordonez, NPR News.

Minnesota's top federal fraud attorney is stepping down after the Justice Department pushed his office to investigate the widow of a woman killed by an ICE officer last week. Minnesota Public Radio's Dana Ferguson reports.

Joe Thompson, the attorney with extensive experience prosecuting social services fraud in Minnesota, resigned from the U.S. attorney's office along with several other experienced attorneys. The move comes after top Justice Department officials pushed the Minnesota U.S. attorney's office to investigate the widow of Renee Macklin Goode, the person shot and killed last week by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. The prosecutors also raised concerns about immigration enforcement efforts, diverting resources away from prosecuting major fraud cases in the state. For NPR News, I'm Dana Ferguson in St. Paul.
