Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. The nominee for secretary of defense is defending himself against a range of serious allegations being raised at his Senate confirmation hearing today. Pete Hegseth has been accused of financial mismanagement, of sexual misconduct and of excessive drinking, a point that evoked a contentious exchange between Democratic Senator Tim Kaine and Hecseth.
Senator Tim Kaine
One of your colleagues said that you got drunk at an event at a bar and chanted, kill all Muslims. Another colleague, not anonymous, we have this said that you took coworkers to a strip club, you were drunk, you tried to dance with strippers, you had to be held off the stage, and one of your employees in that event filed a sexual harassment charge as a result of it. Now, I know you denied these things, but isn't that the kind of behavior that, if true, would be disqualifying for somebody to be secretary of defense? Senator Anonymous false charges they're not anonymous.

Hegseth has said that as defense secretary, he would not drink alcohol. The ferocious wildfires in Southern California are projected to be one of the most financially costly disasters in U.S. history, according to experts. Experts from AccuWeather. NPR's Natalie Escobar reports that insurance payouts will come at a difficult time for home insurance markets in California and other parts of the US in part because.

Of climate change, insurance rates have been going up in California. Climate change has made temperatures rise and vegetation dry out. It's fueled wildfire seasons that have become even more destructive and expensive. Some companies have stopped writing new policies or left the state altogether. Policyholders across the country are also losing coverage and getting rate increases. According to Carolinkowski of the Environmental Defense.

Fund, continually increasing risk and uncertainty about how that risk is changing really breaks our traditional model of insurance.

Drug prices are going up. NPR's Sidney Lupkin reports, as according to new data on price hikes in January.
Sidney Lupkin
Prices went up for 575 name brand drugs. And that's just in the first two days of 2025. Those included drugs for diabetes, HIV, cancer, rare diseases and more. The drug price research firm 46 Brooklyn did the analysis and shared it with NPR. It found that the median price increase was 4%. If that holds the rest of the year, it would make it the lowest in more than a decade. Any price increases still exceed inflation for people without insurance coverage for their drugs. That means they'll wind up paying more for those with covered drugs. Whether they pay more or less depends on their individual health insurance plan. Sidney Lupkin, NPR News.

Construction of the nuclear powered aircraft carriers is set to begin in the coming years, and when they're done, they'll be named the USS William J. Clinton and USS George W. Bush. Biden said in a statement that when he personally delivered the news to the former presidents, quote, they were deeply humbled. Biden added that both men know firsthand the weight of the responsibilities that come with being commander in chief.
