Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. On Capitol Hill today, a tense Senate confirmation hearing for defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth. NPR's Elena Moore reports. The military veteran and former Fox host faces questions about his qualifications for the role, along with accusations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking.
Elena Moore
Hegseth has denied accusations of past abuse of women and alcohol, but Democratic senators like Virginia's Tim Kaine focused on it.
Tim Kaine
We have seen records with names attached to all of these, including the name of your own mother. So don't make this into some anonymous press thing.
Elena Moore
Republicans on the committee, like Oklahoma Senator Mark Wayne Mullen, defended Hegseth.
Tim Kaine
It is so ridiculous that you guys hold yourself as this higher standard and you forget you got a big plank in your eye. We've all made mistakes.
Elena Moore
Committee divisions aside, Republicans control the Senate. Pete Hegseth only needs a simple majority to get confirmed. Elena Moore, NPR News, Washington.

Firefighters battling the two biggest wildfires in Los Angeles, the Palisades and the Eaton fires, are increasing containment ahead of dangerous Santa Ana winds that are forecast to get much stronger through tomorrow. At least 24 people are dead. More than 100,000 are displaced, and many don't know if their homes are still standing. A disaster recovery center opened today in Los Angeles for fire victims to be able to apply for federal grants and housing assistance. FEMA administrator Bob Fenton.

One of the things that we've already done is had over 40,000 applications. We provide over $8 million. But there's a lot of work yet to do.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass says she has an open mind about working with the incoming Trump administration.
Karen Bass
This is a crisis that impacts the nation. The nation's second largest city has got to succeed.
Jeanine Herbst
This after President elect Trump accused her of incompetence over how she's handling the wildfires. Israel and Hamas are very close to reaching a ceasefire agreement that would stop the fighting in Gaza. That's according to several officials involved in the talk talks. NPR's Cat Lonsdorf reports.

It's been weeks of talks in Doha negotiated through mediators, including both the incoming and outgoing US Administrations. Similar talks have fallen apart several times over the past year. But one Israeli official with knowledge of the talks told NPR that they have, quote, never been in such detailed negotiations. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks. A spokesperson for the Qatari prime minister echoed that same sentiment, saying the two parties have overcome major obstacles in recent days. Even if a deal is reached, it won't be implemented immediately. It will still need approval from the Israeli cabinet and could head to the Israeli Supreme Court. Kat Lansdorf, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Wall street in mixed territory by the close the Dow up 221 points. You're listening to NPR News. Google is facing more scrutiny from a UK Watchdog over its search ad business. The Competition and Markets Authority says it will look at whether Google is weakening competition by stifling innovation, giving preference to its own services or exploding exploiting user data, using new powers to investigate competition in digital markets. The UK Watchdog says it will decide whether Google should be required to change its behavior. The regulator is looking into Google's role in shaping the development of new artificial intelligence services and interfaces such as answer engines, and whether that limits competition. Little red dots are mysterious cosmic objects first spotted by the James Webb Space Telescope. NPR's Nell Greenfield Boyce reports researchers have new clues about what these things might be.
Nell Greenfield Boyce
Little red dots are small and reddish, but their light has a lot of unusual features. Dale Kosevsky is an astrophysicist at Colby College. He and some colleagues have just studied over 300 little red dots, and he shared the results at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. He says these seem to be a common of the early universe.
Karen Bass
All of them exist back when the universe was a billion years old or younger.
Nell Greenfield Boyce
As the universe ages, they disappear. He says a large fraction shows signs that they contain supermassive black holes, making him think these little red dots may be the seeds of today's large galaxies. Nell Greenfield Boyce, NPR News.
