Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. The death toll in the Southern California wildfires now stands at 25. That figure is expected to rise as the search continues for dozens more people who are unaccounted for. Tens of thousands of individual have been evacuated. NPR's Martin Kassi reports on the efforts to find enough housing.

The big job right now is figuring out how to shelter so many people who've lost their homes. The rental market here was already super expensive and we're hearing reports of rent increases that qualify as price gouging under state law. The city attorney is going to be on the lookout for that, she says. Mayor Karen Bass said the city is trying to make 1200 more units of housing available in the next week or so. They want to streamline permitting for faster rebuilding, but it's a massive effort looming ahead of this region.

According to the Cal Fire website, the Santa Ana winds that can fuel the fires are expected to diminish, but humidity will remain at low levels. A red flag warning remains in effect through tonight. Containment of the Eaton fires increased to 45%. The larger Palisades fire is 19% contained. Now Florida Republican U.S. senator Marco Rubio is expected to sail through his confirmation process to be the next secretary of state. He's being questioned today in the Foreign Relations Committee where he's been a longtime member. Here's NPR's Michelle Kellerman.

The Republican chairman and the top Democrat on the committee are already telling Rubio that they think he's well qualified to lead Donald Trump's State Department as they question him about Russia, Ukraine, the Middle east and China. Rubio says voters gave Trump a, quote, unmistakable mandate.

They want a strong America, a strong America engaged in the world, but guided by a clear objective to promote peace abroad and security and prosperity here at home.

If confirmed, the Florida born son of Cuban immigrants would be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat. He would also be the first to face travel restrictions in China. Michelle Kellerman, NPR News.

The State Department consumer prices rose 2.9% from a year ago in December in the U.S. marking a third consecutive monthly increase in annual inflation. NPR's Rafael Nam reports.

Inflation is proving to be pretty stubborn. Yes, it has eased a lot from the very high level of 9.1% over a couple years ago, but in the past few months, it has been moving higher, not lower. A big reason for the uptick last month was gas prices, but there was some good news. Factoring out gas and food prices, inflation came below expectations. Overall, though, it means the Federal Reserve may have to keep interest rates higher for a little longer after cutting them by a full percentage point last year. And the outlook for inflation is very uncertain. President Elect Donald Trump says he wants tariffs and mass deportations, which economists say could make inflation worse. Rafael Nam, NPR News.

It's NPR. The U.S. supreme Court is weighing today's arguments that pit free speech rights against the Texas law mandating restrictions on porn websites. A trade group representing adult entertainment, performers and companies is challenging a law that requires pornographic sites to verify the age of users. The World Monuments Fund has released its list of Most Endangered Places. NPR's Neta Ulaby reports. This year, it includes a Ukrainian museum damaged by Russian missiles and an ancient Turkish city shaken by earthquakes.

The list comes out every two years. The point is to raise awareness and money for fragile cultural sites under threat, says World Monuments Fund President Benedict de Multlar.

Conflict and natural disaster is a very important category.

That's why all of Gaza was included. The organization said massive destruction of markets, mosques, churches and other buildings affects hearts and minds. Sites endangered by climate change include historic lighthouses in Maine and Africa's Swahili Coast. Also on the list, the moon under threat by what the World Monuments Fund describes as exploitative visitation in a space race involving multiple countries and corporations. Nneda Ulibi, NPR News.

Lakshmi Singh [00:14]:
The death toll in the Southern California wildfires has tragically risen to 25, with expectations of further increases as search efforts continue for dozens of individuals still unaccounted for. Tens of thousands have been evacuated amid the devastating fires.
Martin Kassi [00:37]:
"The big job right now is figuring out how to shelter so many people who've lost their homes." The rental market in the region is already strained, with reports of rent hikes that may constitute price gouging under state law. Mayor Karen Bass announced plans to make an additional 1,200 housing units available within the next week, aiming to streamline permitting processes for faster rebuilding. This massive effort underscores the looming challenges the region faces in the aftermath of the fires.
Lakshmi Singh [01:02]:
Florida Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio is poised to advance through his confirmation process to become the next Secretary of State. Michelle Kellerman [01:35]:
Rubio emphasized the mandate given by voters to Trump, stating they "want a strong America, a strong America engaged in the world, but guided by a clear objective to promote peace abroad and security and prosperity here at home."
Michelle Kellerman [02:03]:

Consumer prices in the United States increased by 2.9% from the previous year in December, marking the third consecutive monthly rise in annual inflation, according to the State Department.
Rafael Nam [02:27]:
"Inflation is proving to be pretty stubborn." While inflation has decreased from a peak of 9.1% a couple of years ago, recent months have seen an uptick, primarily driven by rising gas prices. Despite some positive signs—excluding gas and food, inflation fell below expectations—the Federal Reserve may need to maintain higher interest rates for a longer period following last year's significant rate cuts. The future outlook remains uncertain, especially with proposed policies like tariffs and mass deportations from President Elect Donald Trump, which economists warn could exacerbate inflation.
Lakshmi Singh [03:11]:
The U.S. Supreme Court is currently examining arguments that balance free speech rights against a Texas law imposing restrictions on pornographic websites. The law requires these sites to verify the age of their users, a move contested by a trade group representing adult entertainment professionals and companies.
Lakshmi Singh [03:11]:
The World Monuments Fund has released its latest list of Most Endangered Places, aiming to raise awareness and secure funding for vulnerable cultural sites worldwide.
Neta Ulaby [03:53]:

This year's list includes a Ukrainian museum damaged by Russian missiles and an ancient Turkish city devastated by earthquakes.
Michelle Kellerman [04:04]:
"Conflict and natural disaster is a very important category," highlighting the diverse threats faced by these sites.
Neta Ulaby [04:08]:
Additional entries include historic lighthouses in Maine and Africa's Swahili Coast threatened by climate change. Notably, the Moon is also listed, reflecting concerns over "exploitative visitation in a space race involving multiple countries and corporations."
Lakshmi Singh [04:39]:
